Ogden's Nut Gone Flake

Pretty fun album with some catchy melodies. Not heard much of these guys but I'll probably seek out more of their albums.

Didn’t do much for me.

Well, shit. This is the most aggressively British album I've heard in a while. It was all right, I guess--enjoyable catchy songs mixed with forgettable, so-so tracks. Fave track: Lazy Sunday. It has a jaunty yet cozy sound to it.

I haven't listened to this album in many years. I bought it in my late teens, during a psychedelic phase. I preferred (then) side 2, with its interstitial tale of Happiness Stan and more whimsical songs. Listening to it now, I prefer the tougher side 1, which is (I think) a more transitional piece between the Small Faces and the bands to follow (Faces, and Humble Pie). This will definitely be getting more play from me.

ambitious conceptual album, decent psychedelic sounds

Groovy right out of the gate, from literally the first note. Raw, ragged and rollicking, the Small Faces made a big sound and seem to be having a big time doing it. More garage-rocky than trippy or psychedelic, the all-out drum rolls and coruscating hooks and crunches, are nicely complemented by the keyboard flourishes and committed vocals. The music is great overall, but the spoken word story is silly and adds nothing, knocking this down to a 3.

Interesting

This is the Irish version of the 60s. Highly indifferent to it.

Muchly enjoyment made was the twisty turny razzle dazz of goodly phras-ed musics. 3.6/5

Brilliant opening track. There's strong work on the rest of the album. Many reviews here suggest Python connections with the narration and themes of the music - we should realise that this album was recorded (should one say compiled?) well over a year before Python was first broadcast. Python were Oxbridge - small faces came from East London and the language and cadence of the narration are, while clearly not being Polari, are very much Polari-esque and steeped in music halls the Pythons would absolutely not have known, except by academic interest. The album is definitely worth a listen, and whilst undeniably a concept album, has enough great music to be worth dipping into again. Not faultless, the novelty aspect of it won't reward repeat plays in full, nonetheless I'd say a solid 4/5.

Odd album but not bad overall, definitely unique

I really wanted to like thus, I do like Small Faces generally, but they keep having these narrative bits to start off every song later on thus album and it was really pretty annoying.

enjoy the first two songs. Afterglow a fun energetic vibe to it. Rene - slightly weirder. cockney accented lyrics, like more of a daft sang vibe to it, catchy, and easy to relax to, foot tap along to. Song of a Baker dull. Lazy Sunday, more cockney chat. Irritating. part 2 chatting gobshite. largely strongly disliked it.

Old shite

I think a lot of people will know Lazy Sunday, it's one of those songs my Dad would half sing around the house when I was growing up at least. I'm not really a fan of psychedelic rock (and really dislike most prog rock), though I can leave it on in the background like the radio and find it inoffensive. B side of the album is crap. Not sure I'll stretch to 2 on it even though there are a couple of good tracks.

The album starts off okay, a reasonably decent instrumental to kick us off followed by Afterglow (Of Your Love) which is great. The next track is filler, feels a lot longer than two and a half minutes (partially because it does that thing where it fades out and fades back in again). Then Rene, a song about a prostitute at the docks which if you'd told me was from a Monty Python sketch I would've 100% believed you... at least until it spends a couple of minutes at the end in a long, drawn out, instrumental finish. Song of a Baker is better, great guitar in this. Lazy Sunday is next, this is the one that is miles ahead in the Spotify listening numbers, but it's like Madness trying to do prog rock. Kinda catchy, but not great. Then we change tack completely. I had a quick google and this is the other side of the album, which I guess gives them an excuse for a stylistic change. Lots of narration, and the worst of prog rock weirdness. It's a gibberish fairy tale about someone looking for the other half of the moon, consulting a fly and a tramp. There's the odd interesting instrumental bit, but it's 50% narrative and just strange. Just about squeaks a 2 for me on the strength of the first couple of tracks.

I think I've only heard one or two songs by the Small Faces. I like them, so this could be a decent album. Here's hoping! Track one. Ok, this isn't what I was expecting. At all. This is quite progrock-esque. I mean, there are no shit lyrics to put up with I guess. Track two. This is more like what I was expecting. Bit of acoustic guitar type stuff. Is he deliberately mumbling? Ok, here we go. Yes! This is more like it! Good chorus. "I'm happy just to be with you". Yes mate, that's the stuff. Track three. Decent. Has slowed the tempo a bit, but not too much, we're still away. I mean, it's not great. It's barely a song. They've padded it out a bit with a bunch of do-waddy-waddy stuff. Oooh, it's fading back in! Have I spoken too soon? No. Track four. This makes think of the Kinks? Anyone else? "Well she's Rene, the docker's delight, and a ship's in every night" Sounds like a whore? They've written a song about a prostitute haven't they? Brilliant. The scamps. It's quite good too. Catchy. Bet she put her prices up after this came out. Plenty of double-entendres here. Track five. Oooh, we've gone electric. This is heavier. Ahhh, nonsense lyrics are here. He's not much of a baker is he? Puts some water in a jug, bakes some flour - which will do what exactly? you'll just have hot flour?? And he doesn't do anything with the salt. Just stores it. Nice one. Never gonna run out of that. Not gonna eat fuck all either. Nice enough tune though, fair play. Track six. I know this one! Excellent song. Not surprised he's not getting with his neighbours if he's blasting the tunes out. It's a Sunday lad, turn it down, have a bit of respect! "Laaaaaaazzy Sunday afternooon, I've got no mind to worry! Yes, that's gold that. This album's got better and better. Track seven. Am I sitting what on my what now? Bit of a change of direction this. What's going on? It's very theatric, I'll give it that. More chat. What? I'm with him, and then he slips into another language. Or gibberish. Not sure which. He's lost me. "Now as eaved and his deep approachy...", "What is the folly of this half disappearing of the moony most?". You what mate? You fucking what?? Track eight. This intro has hints of Foxy Lady doesn't it? I wonder which came first? This is decent enough. Yeah, I like this. Nice sound on these drums. "Rooooolling oveeer!". Excellent. Track nine. More of this chatty fucker. "After a little lapse of time, Stan became deep hungry in his tumbload". He wants to have a word with the baker, he'll warm him up some flour. "Here I am, tiny fly, can I share your shepherd's pie?". I mean, it's not great is it. And now Stan's talking to a fly. And letting him have his pie! Track ten. Christ more chat. The fly wants to say thanks for the pie. Ok. Wants to offer something in return? He's a fly, what's he gonna have to help old Stan?? Does he know where the other half of the moon is? He's a fly! This guy is reminding me of the Mandarin from Iron Man. Just goes off on his own every now and then, but he finds his way back. "Hovery, hovery, hovery, and out with the magic wordys". Easier to just go with it. Track eleven. "I must leave you here, and he pointed here.." Did he? The fly? What was it he pointed with? "with his sort of fly type fingold" course he did, course he did. Next! John sounds like he's loving life to be fair. He's happy. Leave him alone. Ahhh, he's won them over. Good. Track twelve. Here is, Mad John. Bet he's sound. Seems they speak the same language. Bit of luck. Hang on, Stan's only just realised that the moon disappears when the sun comes up? How old is he? And we're back to a song. "Life is just like a bowl of All-Bran, you wake in the morning and it's there". Not in my house mate, I have to make my breakfast manually, the old fashioned way. Here we are, the Mandarin's back. Remember the special words?? You'll have to write them down for me, sorry. And that's it? Ok. Well, it wasn't what I was expecting. But I think I enjoyed it. Maybe. Not sure I'd listen to it again. Lazy Sunday is a proper song though.

Brings Thomas Frank's book title to mind: 'The Conquest of Cool: Business Culture, Counterculture, and the Rise of Hip Consumerism'. Pleased to say the Small Faces chapter has a happy ending: these epigones didn't make it big with their mildly amusing twaddle.

Funky title, funky band. A bit special really. Bet deep down Blur would have swapped everything they ever did to have released something this original.

Never listened to this in its entirety before. I should have done. It's brilliant.

I enjoyed this album. I can see how it influenced psychedelic rock.

Beatles vibes

A new band and new music for me. I listened with headphones, and the band did a few interesting things with the stereo recording. Some of the music was odd, but not completely off-putting. In general the music seemed to fit somewhere between early Pink Floyd and the Moody Blues. The very last track, "HappyDaysToyTown" reminded me of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow". I'm still not sure what to think about this album other than that it is okay.

Really fun and heartfelt rock/spoken word stuff. The opening track was the perfect start to this album, I loved it!

it was a rather boring listen and didn't evoke any emotions, which when I listen to music is the number one thing that keeps me involved in music.

Track 1: Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake Ight so this is a 2 different sides typa track like all the 60s shit. i kinda rock w that stuff sometimes, wouldn’t listen without both headphones. kinda sounds like a symphony like all the instruments sound really unique. that synth blast around 1:35 came in hard. pretty good into. little drum part that goes thru both earphones is cool. Track 2: Afterglow of your love Acoustic intro is meh, sounds very bland so far, breakdown is tryna build something up, this feels really generic, tryna sound all deep and lovey but it seems like shit people have said a million times before. it was the 60s however so i guess for something of that time period it isn’t that bad Track 3: Long shos and worlds apart I like the quick into, bass sound plucky n nice, i like the guitar tone, interlude was ok, kid of repetitive at the end Track 4: Rene i immediately at uncomfortable by the voice but i think it might grow on me, i’m tryna focus on the music but the lyrics sound so awful that i can’t pay attention, oh my god i take it back this sounds genuinely terrible but hopefully rhis musical section sounds good, nah not a fan Track 5: Song of a baker Guitar sounds good, oh fuck why are they talking about weeds in the field, ugh the lyrics suck again i’m already sick OH WAIT THE GUITAR SOLO IS BRINGING IT BACK just stopped me from skipping ok the end wasn’t terrible Track 6: Lazy Sunday OH MY GOD I FUCKING HATE HIS VOICE if this was someone else’s voice i feel like the album wouldn’t be as terrible. he just fucking said rootidootidie kill me im done with this album ALBUM LEFT UNFINISHED

A kao slatka mi je ta priča u drugom dijelu albuma al nije sad to ne znam ja šta. Prvi dio albuma mi je BAŠ bzvz. Već sam ga zaboravila 🙅🏼‍♀️. Happiness Stan mi je bila dobra pjesma i to čak bolja u mono verziji nego stereo, et sam da se zna, možda jer mi je glazba na ovom albumu nekad iritantna pa lakše slušat mono, who knows. Pokušala sam izvuć trojku al je nestala ko polovica mjeseca. Eto dvojka.

Dobra psihodelija (prva strana albuma) u kombinaciji pozitive i spoken worda (cijela druga strana albuma) - jako simpatična priča, bajka, to mi je i presudilo za ocjenu. Volim kad u albumima ima nekakav koncept - kao ovdje u drugom dijelu albuma, ali naravno ne smijem izostaviti prvi dio jer je također isto dobar. Glas koji priča, taj govornik ima dobar glas, kao da slušam nekakvu priču iz crtića kad sam bio mali na kazeti, ali je na engleskom.

Sviđa mi se čak, al je onooo forgettable as fuck.

A concept album that if released today would pop up on some indie station. Their psychedelic sound is pretty chill and easy to listen to. Didn't really enjoy the speaking parts throughout the album - but I guess that's what you get from a concept album. Best: Long Agos And Worlds Apart Worst: Happiness Stan

I cannot believe this band has existed for 50 years and I never heard them. This belongs up there with any of the baroque pop that was being produced in the 60s.

Never heard this 60’s psychedelic album, I was missing out.

Very good and way ahead of its time, though the whole fairy tale/nonsense dialog elements of the last half just muddled the B side for me.

Such a great sound, the drums, the bass, its so cool. A psychedelic experimentation, but sonically not as polished as others of the time. 4/5 - Already have it on vinyl (mainly due to the cool cover)

I like the general vibe, the basslines are tasty. I like the concept album format. The songs that veered into psychedelia were my favorite, in particular "The Journey."

A playful and warm psychedelic journey. I really enjoy this sort of thing.

This type of Brit-rock of the era in general doesn't do much for me. It's like if the Beatles never moved past their early works.

It's such a shame that the recording of the best track on Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, its title track, really is not up to standard. For a 2018 remaster, a stereo version at that, I expected a lot better. From what I can hear between the awkward bits of narration, it like the Kinks but worse on every aspect. I see no reason to give this any other rating than a 2/5.

Parilla kuuntelukerralla mieleen jäi Afterglowin kertosäe ja Lazy Sunday. Nämä ilmeisesti olivatkin levyn hittibiisit. Peruskakkonen.

Loses a point for too many skits

Fun album from a band I've never heard before. Psychedelic Hobbiton folk rock? Why not.

It felt like two different albums. The first half was rock-ish and very 70's-like, of which I thought was fantastic. However the second half was a bit like a children's story with a narrator and child-like songs, of which I thought was weird and wasn't cohesive with the first half. Favorite track: Afterglow of Your Love

The front half (or the first side of the album) stands up as some really great psychedelia from the 60s and the second half delves into a more progressive rock format with several songs coming together to make a long "medley" and tell a story. Using a bit of backwards logic, the front half has a bit of a Tame Impala sound, only except some of the mix isn't as perfect as other contemporary artists and artists of the 60s. Personally, I think there's a lot of heart to this album, and I will be coming back to this on a regular basis. Highlights: 1, 2, 5, and 6 (and 7-12 for those who want a combination of Yes and 13th Floor Elevators). Right after I wrote this, I went into the stereo versions. I should have started with them in hindsight, but sometimes mono can be cool for older stuff. I was already going to rate this a five, but I can't wait to listen through it again.

Ok this is from 1968 and has a super goofy cover, it's gonna be psychedelic or folk rock, maybe both. Not exactly a wild prediction given that's the genre every second day here, but whatever. Baseline 2/5 and it's gonna need to rEALLY impress to get any higher, just because I'm bored to death of these bands being in this list. Ok and yep, psychedelic nonsense. I will admit it's well played; at times I'd almost say this is a precursor to stuff like Genesis a few years later, but in this case the whimsy and narration just annoys me. It annoys me in the same way the mighty boosh annoys me. The "quaint Britishness" of it just gives me vibes of rainy days, grey skies, grey streets, grey buildings, and baby poo-coloured minis driving on said grey streets. This is the soundtrack to staying in a hotel with no heating and rotting century-old wallpaper that's about the same poo colour as all the minis. The 2/5 stays, just because it has the good sense to only go half an hour, and it honestly isn't so bad it gets a 1 - it's just mildly annoying, and they probably didn't know any better at the time.

Good... It was a bit much at times though. I think the wackiness sometimes surpassed the actual quality of the music, and relied too heavily on Unwin's unintelligible narration for the second half. Enjoyable and fun - just not great

This is an extremely inconsistent album, there were too many spoken word sections with subpar lyrics. The instrumentation on some of these tracks were going crazy cant lie. Did not enjoy most of this record I'd give it a 4/10.

Was a bit weird, but near the end there were these stories that I really liked hearing! The diction and rhetoric they used were crazy and it seemed to have some flow but I didn't track it all that well. I'll have to listen again to understand!

Some classic tracks, but others have dated a bit

As soon as I saw the title for this album I knew that it wouldn’t even be a quarter as good musically as the title is, I was correct. This is like classic rock that wasn’t good enough to make it to a small town rock station to be overplayed. I had a hard time listening, it was boring and didn’t keep my interest whatsoever. Won’t recommend ever. To borrow a phrase, this isn’t Walmart uk rock, this is Biway uk rock.

I dig the goofiness of the cover art and "Lazy Sunday". The first instrumental track was pretty dope as well. Overall it's just not quite my cup of tea. 🌟🌟

I really enjoyed the album. I'm a sucker for weird psychedelic experimentation. However, this album is probably one of the weaker psychedelic albums I've heard. I got strong AiW vibes from the album, especially with the narrator coming in and out on the second side. It opened strongly with the title track. Nice transition from Afterglow to Long Agos and Worlds Apart. My favorite tracks are Long Agos and Worlds Apart, Lazy Sunday, and Journey. Would definitely trip to this.

Prog rock and then some. A step below the Pink Floyd's and Who's of the world.

There are some cool guitar sounds happening, and I like how scrappy and raw this sounds, but otherwise this is just fine.

This trippy Rock album was fun to listen to.

I could really do without the storytelling parts on Happiness Stan, but liked this way better than the Faces album.

First side: well, that's pretty interesting and proggy. Second side: What the ... ?

The album has genuine moments of grandeur and inventiveness; however, it is held back by the random asides of the story it is trying to tell. Also, every now and then the cockney accents are a bit too much to stomach. All of these issues though are overshadowed by the overshadowing of the Stereo mix and creativity of the actual songs.

Bit same-ish

There was no shortage of good psychedelic albums emerging from England in 1967-1968, but Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake is special even within their ranks. The Small Faces had already shown a surprising adaptability to psychedelia with the single "Itchycoo Park" and much of their other 1967 output, but Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake pretty much ripped the envelope.

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake seems like a rare case of an album that feels so essential and influential, but somehow never really comes together for me. Some great tracks, and the narration is original, and while I've seen it done on other records since, definitely has a purpose here. I appreciate the experimentation and a few of the stand-out tracks. Fav Tracks: Afterglow and Son of a Baker. Rating 3/5

What a deeply weird record! This was a really fun album to listen to, especially following a fairly safe outing like Urban Hymns. I have to admire an artist that goes out of their way to make something so strange with such commitment. And it wouldn't work if they didn't have the songs and musicianship to match. Lost half a point because I found the narration on side two kind of grating as it wore on. 3.5/5 Favourite tracks: "Afterglow" and "Lazy Afternoon"

The second half is not terribly listenable though because of the gobbledygook voiceovers so idk how this could be one of the best british albums of all time. Bumass brits.

I'm not really familiar with mod music outside of early Who albums. This was good listen and probably deserves a second and third closer listen while checking out the lyrics.

This is actually a very playful and lovely record. First disc is just ok 60s rock, but Big fan of Disc 2 and the Tale of Happiness Stan.

Más cercano al pop que al rock para finales de los 70. Sensación de haber escuchado ese tipo de música y ritmos en otros grupos. Los considero poco innovadores. Locuciones en medio de las canciones.

The first songs are pretty common, nothing special. The second part gave me a "Lord of the Rings" vibe that was very cool and justified a good rating for this album. I probably will not listen to it again anymore, but it was a good experience.

It’s aggressively ok. I see where modern acts have taken inspiration from this. It falls into that category of important for providing inspiration for later acts who’ve expanded and iterated on this to deliver something better. So it’s important but after hearing the better stuff based on this work you find yourself not wanting to listen to this anymore. It has a lot of flavors I should like but just find it ok. It makes me want to listen to MGMT.

Pretty trippy and not really my cup of tea. Huge volume of songs, with the second half being an unusual story. Became just background music and surprising this was so highly ranked.

Very eccentric album. There is some interesting story being told in between the songs(admittedly, I don't understand some of it but it is a neat way to portray an album) the songs themselves are pretty good. Nice light/folk-y rock/psychedelic rock. It was an enjoyable listen and the story that came in between the songs was weird but fun.

Definitely an unusual album with a bit of spoken word. Sounds like it came from the 1960s, so it sounds very period. Being unfamiliar with Small Faces, I didn’t know any of the songs, but my three favorites were Rene, Afterglow, and Song of a Baker.

Ein typisches Psychedelic-Album, wie man es in den 60'ern so gemacht hat. Wenig störendes, ein paar ganz interessante harmonische Wendungen, die man noch mal studieren könnte. Gute 3 Sterne.

This album had some really cool, psychedelic songs! The title track could be straight from a Tame Impala record. Some of the later tracks weren't quite as good, but a fun listen for a band I never heard of.

Weird and quirky, just not necessarily my thing. Decent though.

Surprisingly good. Definitely not something I would have searched out on my own.

Reminded me a lot of The Beatles in that quirky way. Very British sounding. Perfectly pleasant, if a bit odd, background music.

Pretty fun, catchy tunes. Sounds of the era. Last track (B-side) is epic.

Britisk 60’er rock, fortællende, folkeligt

Psychedelic, poppy, very whimsical. Not really a strong opinion on this one other than "it was fine". The skits in between were a little weird, but I didn't hate them. Favorite tracks: "HappyDaysToyTown", "Rollin' Over"

Quite an interesting record. The first song really captivated me, and I liked that the band decided to really tell a story throughout the album. However, towards the end, I wasn't into it sonically...as much anyway. 3.5.

2 half-albums. The first side is a stone classic; the second side is a spoken-word psych mess. Maybe there's good stuff in there, but it is hiding behind all the other fluff.
