Reviews (page 10 of 14)

I really wanted to love this but I just don’t think it’s for me. Most of the album feels more like psych rock than funk, which is a genre that’s never really appealed to me. I’ve never really understood the love for Maggot Brain either, and the end of the last song is just kinda gross. There are definitely some cool moments here though, I might need to check out some later P-Funk albums to see if that’s more my vibe. Favourite tracks: Can You Get To That, Super Stupid

High highs and low lows.

Somewhat strange listen. It’s groovy but not as funky as I expected, bass-wise. I know this is considered a classic. To my ears, it’s not as tight as it could be but maybe that was on purpose. 2.9/5.0

★★★½

enjoyed some of it but that last song really brought it down for me

Funky for sure. I loved the title track. The rest isn't too bad. Not 100% my cup of tea but enjoyable.

It is okay, not my style. I didn’t liked in a specific way any song. Is actually 2,5

I really don’t get the first song at all. It’s trippy, sure, but I really just find it boring. The rest of the album is nice and groovy, with a series of wonderful jams. It’s a pretty fun listen, but not a total standout to me. The closer makes up for the first track though…fart sounds were a nice touch LOL

May need another lizen

Nothing hit the highs of the title track, but this was very enjoyable until the end; Back in our Minds and Wars of Armageddon were near unlistenable

The title song was outstanding and I enjoyed the rest way more than I expected. 3.5 stars rounded down but would probably go to 4 with a few more listens.

Zaujímavé funky, nie celkom na každodenné počúvanie... Prvá pieseň ma nadchla, hlavne kvôli gitare, ostatné boli pre mňa priemer. V každom prípade, v čase vzniku to muselo byť veľmi silné...

Nice funk album though the ending track is odd

Ok hot takes here but I like everything but the title track, album cover, and back in our minds. The album cover and title are so disgusting I’m sorry but no, not feeling the maggot brains. Didn’t love the title track because it was a little boring for an almost like 11 minute song and back in our minds just sounds bad but everything else is super good funk and was definitely a put on can you get to that was a standout and the Armageddon song has a cool like nuke dropping part that’s unique.

This was fun. Very short album; very funky, and a bit more rock and roll-inspired sounding than I was expecting (listened to while hot tubbing with Cam)

not my taste

Favorite song: Hit It And Quit It.

It's okay; very funky. Not my fav but it's good. :p

Funky chill krautrock. Better than shit for brains.

It's pretty damn funky I guess. It was a lot less funky than I expected (in terms of, I vaguely know Parliament out of the P-Funk collective). I can respect that the opening track is a sick 10 minute guitar solo but I also don't...want...a 10 minute guitar solo....I want some funky distorted guitar in a normal song or 4. It's not bad, but it's not my thing. It's also kinda lacking in cohesion. But it is funky. Also what the hell is Wars of Armageddon. Just...really ruined the ending.

I would not personally listen to it but I liked the guitar in it. Very good!

The album cover and name made me think it would be a much darker sound. Maggot Brain gave Pink Floyd vibes was very instrumental, very different from the next two songs. Can you get to that was much more of a bop i really enjoyed this song. Hit it and quit it was also enjoyable but I didn’t like it as much as can you get to that. You and your folks, was ok not my favorite in the album the beat didn’t draw me in like the others did. Super stupid I liked it sounds like it was probably the song that would’ve made it on the radio, more similar to the popular songs in the genre I liked the little piano doot doots half way through. Back in our minds starts off especially funky I digged that but I didn’t love the vocals, loved the reggae sounding trumpet. Wars of Armageddon ended the album the way it started with the long instrumental, I liked how it did a full circle. Fave Songs: can you get with that, super stupid Least Faves: you and your folks, back in your mind

Ignore the band name, because this is a rock album through and through. The middle has some funky elements, but there are more big guitar riffs than there are juicy funk licks. The hooks are in those riffs, not in the choruses or grooves. The middle is good, not amazing, but it's the bookends that make up most of the album's runtime. Despite its reputation, I feel that the title track is the album's biggest weakness; the guitar solo goes on for too long without doing anything new, and the second half in particular is so atmospheric that it borders on noodling. I much prefer the closer and its loud, jamming rhythm (I could do without the sound effects though). There's a bold, brash energy here, but I wish the styles were blended better. A mix of rock and psychedelia with a little funk would work better than a long psych jam followed by a bunch of rockers.

Pretty cool album, enjoyed the musicianship

babado

it was good not my preferred genre but it was listenable

I kinda think the band name says it all. Its funky, and good. Maggot brain is acrazy good track

Not my usual kind of music but the guitar is amazing. Interesting

Honestly thought I was going to enjoy this album more. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it but more to the tune of a 3/5 than a 4 or 5.

Good album 2.5

not my kind of music but i liked back in our minds - good start to 1001 days!

Not for me. Well constructed, but I think this made me realise that vocals (and to a certain extent, lyricism) is a very important part of my musical listening experience. For me, there was that sense of 'lack'. The opening and closing tracks were strong for me though! That being said, probably not a re-listen.

Sooo groovy and funky

Overtones of Hendrix & Parliament - surprisingly raucous guitars, unsurprising funky beats

Sjuka gitarrer, goa röster. Men ingenting jag skulle lyssna på

A fun album that trips occasionally

not fully clicked yet, but see potential

Nice funky vibe to the melodies, interesting guitar riffs, but mediocre lyrics, at best. Overall easy to listen to and interesting enough to keep me engaged.

Super weird, kinda fun, not at all bad

hated the first/title track, but it got better from there fart noises???????? what is happening

Holy guitar - I had no idea about this band nor about this album. I felt the guitar solos deep within my core! YES.

Very strong front but the back half fell off.

Funkiest guitar this side of Jimi Hendrix

No tällaista kovaa sähkökitaran särövingutusta introssa, joka kestää kymmenisen minuuttia.

very good

Like kneeling before a crumbling monolith of sound—with saturated, downtuned guitar riffs, plodding drum patterns, and a thick, almost narcotic mix—this heavy metal album still towers with power with vocals half chant, half sigh, yet showers you in dust as it decays, its foundation long weakened by repetition and excess.

Track 1 and 5 are fire I can leave the rest

It's good but not that much what I'm into

Gonna be honest, this is one of those albums that I've kinda always judged based on its cover. I know the album art is considered classic, but I've always hated it and stayed away based on that. But listening to it, its a lot better than my misconceived notions of it were. However, being funk it's just not really in my wheelhouse. Dangerously close to getting the 2 purely based on the fart and bathroom noises at the end of the album, but it'll still get my "Good, but just not really what I'm into 3".

Funky! I like the experimental guitar

Funk, but almost in a weird way. Liked it more than a normal funk album because of that.

The first track was a bit slow for me but loved the center

The title track is basically a ten minute guitar solo by Eddie Hazel and it’s great. It’s mire rock inspired than funky. From the second track on we’re fully in the funk landscape. Notable tracks include Maggot Brain, Can You Get to That, Hit It and Quit It, Super Stupid. Solid album overall.

Did not need the farts at the end.

Better than I expected since I normally hate glam funk like Parliament. This is more rootsy. Quite nice.

Funk rock still works, and this album has its ups and downs. Overall, not bad.

Yeah, pretty fun, some real nice grooves in here. Unpopular opinion tho - the iconic titular track is not *that* great. Doesn't fit with the rest of the album, no beat and if I wanted to listen to a 10 minute long fuzzy guitar solo without breaks ... well I just wouldn't ever want to listen to that. Maybe one to relisten to. 6.5 / 10 Best track/s: Super Stupid, Can You Get To That

This was pretty funky. It didn't irritate me. I'll give it a 3

good to listen to, but largely unenthused. i think i prefer their other album, 'America Eats Its Young'. good! but not anything to write home about.

Funky, title track is giving Pink Floyd. A bit long tho and bot much else going on

Dont mind this bit of spaced out soul-funk at all! Maggot Brain, the title track, is pure 70s chillout, and the fact that it's 10 minutes plus long doesn't bother me at all - i could listen to this all day. Also loved Hit It And Quit It and the sound effects thrown in to Wars Of Armageddon. It's a total stoner album, and if i was listening to this with a big fat bifter it would be 5 stars all the way. But I wasn't, so it'll have to settle for 3.

Would not buy.

Another funk album that I can't really get into. I feel a bit sad because I've been waiting for this one to appear. Maybe the funk is just not within me. I appreciated the instrumentals (especially the rhythm section) and the guitar on the first track blew me away. But the rest of the songs just didn't do anything for me. And then it ends with baby cries and fart noises. Why

I really thought I was going to love this. I went in with high expectations, which was probably a mistake. The first songs were good, but the crying baby and diarrhoea noises really threw me off. Which is a shame, because I really liked the instrumental part of this song. I really would’ve given it 4☆ if not for that. ☀︎ Maggot Brain 4/5 ☀︎ Can You Get To That 3.5/5 ☀︎ Hit It And Quit It 4/5 ☀︎ You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks 3.5/5 ☀︎ Super Stupid 4.5/5 ☀︎ Back In Our Minds 3/5 ☀︎ Wars Of Armageddon 1.5/5

This album puts strong foot forward and then stumbles; the opening 10 minute guitar solo may be the most emotional guitar ever recorded. There's a lot of good funkiness here, but also the first time I ever thought a song needed less cowbell.

Its alright, sometimes enjoyable, would replay if im in the mood for it, but not daily.

The title track, "Maggot Brain" really starts the album off on a high note. It's an interesting, lengthy and complex guitar solo. It truly feels like you're being lifted off the ground while you listen to it. However, I don't really think that the rest of the album can keep up the momentum. I was really excited going into this, but my excitement didn't last in what I would say is a relatively short album to begin with. That said, for being 1971 this was clearly ahead of it's time. 3.5/5.

I've listened to this 3 times now but over many years. The title track is an all timer but the rest feel left behind and under developed.

I don't like funk. Was expecting to really dislike this, and while I wouldn't say I liked it, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Never knew "Rill Rill" by Sleigh Bells heavily samples "Can You Get To That". That's the thing about funk though: it's heavily sampled by other bands, but I almost always prefer the new use to the original. "Wars of Armageddon" was bad, but at least the album is only 36 minutes, so for that I'll sneak it up to a low 3/5.

This album isn’t my vibe, but that is some shit hot guitar. The first five tracks are great, but it gets way too strange at the end. I’m not a huge fan of vibratone. However, the album has a lot of funk energy, and it is ridiculously upbeat. It’s pretty Zappa, and it demands attention straight off the bat, but overall i find it a little too psychedelic prog for my tastes. Also, the cover freaks me out.

Post Hendrix guitars in the sesame street style

It was ok nothing spectacular...enjoyed the first three songs

Would listen when I feel like appreciating some good guitar rips.

Now, if we’re doing best album COVERS of all time, this is maybe top 5. Classic. I think I’m realizing I just don’t super love funk. There is nothing wrong with this, I can see why it’s many people’s favorite thing. It’s just not my tempo!

Funky 7/10

Track 4 stole the show!

Great.

2.5 if i could. Good jams

A very funky album, kicked off with a great 10 minute hendrix like guitar solo

I'm not sure how I feel about this album. I enjoyed it, but I can't seem to articulate why. I don't plan to listen again, but it was a nice listen.

It for sure is funky. Nothing immediately stands out to me honestly. I could see myself listening to any song here without paying much attention. I just don't think it would ever be my first choice. Funk music is definitely something I like, but I think I like more funk rock than just funk. Either way, still very solid and worth a listen.

Den skitiga och förvrängda basen i Me an my folk... är alldeles underbar. Hendrix-ambtionerna i avslutande Wars of Armageddon drar tyvärr ner helhetsintrycket något.

Funky shit.

J'aime beaucoup cet album. À moitié. 3.49 étoiles

This artist and album are a real suprise - not at all what I was expecting Played it a few times already, and it seems to be growing on me more each time Interesting . . .

I've heard some of these samples in more modern music, so it's really great foundational stuff. And the band lives up their name.

ya good too

I've never really been that high on Funkadelic, but this is a pretty solid album. I previously only knew the title track and "Can You Get To That" from the sample on Sleigh Bells' "Rill Rill". The last two tracks bring the album down a bit for me, but otherwise, it's good. "Super Stupid" is probably the highlight for me. 3.5 stars.

some good songs in here but mostly mid

Funk filled with rock guitar solos. Some otherworldly lyrics. Fun overall.

not goog

This to me was a great eye opener in terms of the history of funk rock and how that has filtered through time to inspire those who came after. As I always say the intro and outro songs are very important, and this intro song was fantastic in terms of preparing you for what the record has to offer. A really intriguing listen, however I don’t think it’ll be one that I’ll be having on repeat. A good listen nonetheless

Title track was best the rest was mid

Good stuf.. but a bit too soft

This album exhibits a lot of diverse music. “Can You Get to That” sounds like classic Funkadelic and is a good track. The title track basically is a lengthy guitar solo. “Super Stupid” sounds exactly like a Jimi Hendrix song to me. The final track is packed with sound effects and doesn’t have much else going for it. Overall it’s a good album but not quite four stars.

I know a lot of people like this one, because I see it in a lot of top rated lists (it has a memorable cover)! I don't know if I'll like it, though, because the first track is a 10 minute guitar solo (which wiki inexplicably classifies as "space rock"). Did I already say that this is definitely not who I thought George Clinton was?? Well, it turns out George Clinton (old white vice president) is also named George Clinton, but I didn't know there were two famous ones of them. So you can't really blame me for mixing them up, can you? In other shocking revelations, 'Can You Get to That' is where the have-a-heart music in Sleigh Bells' 'Rill Rill' comes from! I had no idea that wasn't an original. And in turn, "I once had a life / or rather life had me" must be a reference to The Beatles' 'Norwegian Wood', right? We're all connected, man. The song itself is fine; it's no 'Rill Rill' (or Norwegian Wood) but it's groovy enough. The same is pretty much true for the rest of the non-10-minute-guitar-solos. I think I liked the other Funkadelic album better, but this is fine. Lowlight: 'Maggot Brain' (the song - unpleasant title, unpleasantly long guitar time)

6.5/10 Enjoyable Highlights: Maggot Brain Can You Get to That

Pretty safe experimentation, some occasional good songs (Hit and Quit It / Super Stupid) but otherwise rly overrated

not what i expected, but good

All a bit before my time but I loved the guitar work on this - I would listen again, particularly to the title track

While I understand Maggot Brain’s appeal & I can definitely get into the title track & “You & Your Folks, Me & My Folks”. Overall, the album just doesn’t do it for me.

Was very funky.

Feared the worst from the title and album cover. But actually pretty good. Much better than their other one on here that was just puns on the word funk.

Maggot Brain is the first full album I've listened to from the world of the great George Clinton and, to be honest, I was hoping to get a bit more out of it than I did. The musicality on show is excellent, but the first & last tracks feel like they have a completely different sonic identity than the middle five tunes and I was hoping for the "funk" part of Funkadelic to come out a bit more than it did. It's an album I can appreciate and I certainly didn't have a negative experience running through it, but it's not something I can really see myself putting into heavy rotation. Highlights: Can You Get to That, Hit It and Quit It, Super Stupid

Funkadelic, _Maggot Brain_ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Solid, if not something I'd listen to tomorrow. It did awaken my mind though to _black men brought rock'n'roll to the fore, and rather than immediately concede it to Elvis and a thousand others—and rather than carve out their own niche and stay there, a la R&B + hip hop—some said "this is still ours" and staked their claim._ (Chuck Berry and Little Richard, Sheriff and the Ravels, the Drifters, Bootsy Collins and Prince and Death, Bad Brains and Living Colour after them) Kind of a shame that record producers and artists had the antagonistic relationship they did, else Parliament and Funkadelic might have powered through into the 90s and beyond, rather than be discarded because the names and rights were owned and being squeezed for profit by their studio. Anyway, there's notes of Hendrix and Sabbath in Maggot Brain, though most of it is funk-oriented and meant to make you feel the groove and/or sing along with the chant-like refrains. And if I'm gonna close my eyes and listen to cosmic American music, with bands dressed in cool costumes full of sewn-on motifs and crazy makeup and headgear: I'll probably flip on Funkadelic over KISS anytime. It's not so hard to hear the jump from this directly to Afrika Bambaataa. Like not at all. So it's easy to see this as maybe George Clinton and Black Rock's last push to stay in mainstream pop, even as the genres had already splintered.

Might have hyped this up in my mind a bit so feeling a tad disappointed. But it was still a very enjoyable album, really like the closing tracks random vocal samples. Some really nice drumming.

ok, rounding up to 3

Would have been 4 stars but there's so much weird shit in this album haha

I thought this album had decent noises throughout. I liked the song "Back in Our Minds" when they brought out the splinkaphone and the other song where they recorded a baby crying. That was pretty interesting. Very unconscious music. Perfect for talking over it.

That was a pretty nice album, I enjoyed the mix of funk and psychedelic rock. The melodies were pretty wild and fresh for me. I liked the "Wars of Armageddon" the most.

Need to be in the mood for a thorough full listen again. Kinda "spacey", as I thought, and has some interesting hooks, none that stayed in my head after. I don't think I fully understand the impact this album had, as it has been highly regarded from friends over the years. "Stoner friendly" vibe, walking the "hippie" line as well, imo.

I prefer the Parliament album.

Very good, early funkadelic, not too bootsy an early funk classic.

They've done better

Not what I was expecting. A different listen for sure. Didn’t love or hate.

I can funk my delic like the best of ‘em. And this album was a fun listen especially with the middle finger to the industry right outta the gate with a 10-minute guitar solo. The tough sounding Super Stupid could probably be renamed: Here Lenny Kravitz, hold my beer. But the last track? That’s what bowel moves this one down a notch.

I was into this. Great grooves and baselines. Solid guitar work. So I was thinking maybe I’ve been sleeping on Funkadelic and I should be a fan. But the last song kind of lost me. A bit too long and the jam wasn’t great. Then I really didn’t understand all the doo doo bathroom noises. I’m always in for a good fart joke but these didn’t really land for me.

3+ Skip the first song, 10 minutes of nothing

entretenido, pero es un 3 de 5

Improvised funk jams. I can hear some of John Frusciante's influences. Top track: Hit It And Quit It / Maggot Brain

The thread of bonkersness is characteristcally prominent as Clinton ambles through psychedelia, funk, soul and rock. At all times it retains a vintage, vinyl feel whilst never veering into psychedelic or funk naffery. The melodies and grooves are not compromised for cheap bass-funk, nor poor psychedelic-production tropes. But the album feels like a warm up for the superior 'One Nation Under a Groove', by which time they had developed and near-perfected this funk, soul, jam, blues, pop, rock sound. But having the nascent Funkadelic sound here is none too bad at all. It comes in a notch below 'One Nation'.

uneven - some songs are awesome and others.

Idk about this one

decent, was expecting a little more funk

Make sure to open ears properly.

As much rock as funk

Fantastic Solo on Title track Can you get to that is lovely, 2 stand outs are You and your folks Super Stupid 7/10

A mixed bag. The opening track is weird, boring and redundant as a mood setter, but it is promptly followed by some catchy pop hits. Not bad, but not essential listening. Lose the Hendrix style self-indulgence and it could have been better.

Guitar rifts were neat! A little strange lyrically although I assume that’s the point with the album name being what it is. Not my flavor of music but good artistically.

It was good but I just couldn't catch the vibe, sound quality not amazing

pretty funky, think i gotta be on acid for this to hit

Not as good as it should be. Only a couple of tracks have real upbeat driving grooves that I would call funk. But what do I know?

3.5 stars

I really like this album EXCEPT for the thing I'm always told I'm supposed to go crazy over, which are the two long, extended, shrill and increasingly annoying songs/guitar jams/sonic explosions that open and close the album. The stuff sandwiched in the middle is interesting and quirky and kind of fun. But it comes out to about fifteen minutes of material. Overall, it feels like another entry in the "didn't get enough attention when it came out and for that reason and others (George Clinton eventually becoming GEORGE CLINTON) wound up getting a bit TOO much love ultimately" category. I appreciate that they were branching out into uncharted waters, but 1971 was a fantastic year for soul/r&b; Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Sytlistics, Chi-Lites, Sly Stone, Al Green, Ike and Tina and more I'm sure I'm forgetting put out major albums that year. Not to mention that it was also one of the best years ever for pop/rock. It's kind of easy to see how Maggot Brain got overlooked. And I can't say I'd put it in my top 20 albums for that year. 3 1/2.

This was truly weird, mostly in good ways, though some of it did not land for me. I can see the influence on Prince and others.

Start your album with a ten-minute jazz-funk ramble to weed out the posers, then hit ‘em between the eyes with the leaded gas. Funkadelic does shit their own way.

I love the grooves and the guitar wow. The emotions are really strong in the beginning especially, I loved the dark mysterious vibes. But the last 2 songs are too goofy for me.

Over half of it ends up being instrumental, so wasn’t really expecting that from a funk record (that doesn’t end up playing too much like a funk record). 6/10

One of the most iconic guitar songs of all time followed by some pretty good funky jams. I definitely was really digging this till the literal fart noises on the last track. Wow that was lame. Dropped from at least a strong 4 to a mid 3/5

I like most of this. I don't know enough about funk to know how to talk about it but this is entertaining and I would listen to it again for sure

I mean, it's undeniably funky. The crying on the last track scared the shit out of me when it happened though. A funky beat made terrifying with that and the rest of the shit going on.

I was about to give this a 4. It had so many great hits. Super Stupid seems like early Gary Clark Jr. There was some funk and some hard rock. The opening track was cool too. Then, these last two songs...weren't...great. Back in Our Minds was unsettling and Wars of Armageddon was just a bunch of noises over funk.

Good not great.

Bit of Funk never hurt anyone. Got to be in a sassy mood to really get behind this though.

Definitely funky!

Not bad!

I won't deny that this was a genre-defining/transforming record. Despite primarily being a funk group, there's more emphasis on the guitar here thanks to one Eddie Hazel. Definitely inspired by Jimi Hendrix with the fuzz and "wah" effects utilized throughout. I must've thought this album was better than I remembered though, as it came off as inconsistent after my most recent listen. Yes, the opening track's guitar solo and "Super Stupid" were great for the above reasons, but things just slipped into more of an eccentric mess from there.

You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks”.

It was okay

3.5 stars. Really liked this, especially the opening and closing tracks - the middle ones were just okay. Not necessarily my usual type of music but it was a great listen with some sounds that really tickled my ears and I'd happily give it another spin.

Super stupid, but fun.

***An ok album

A bit of deja vu as I press submit on ATCQ with a comment about wishing I had known their music better when I saw them on Lollapalooza and then seeing (what was essentially) another group about which the same thing could be said. Same Lollapalooza, even. The universe is so weird. While listening to this album this morning, I am reading an article about the death of Dave Parker and it mentions his famous tee shirt that said "If you hear any noise it's just me and the boys boppin" which was inspired by lyrics from Parliament's "Mothership Connection." I don't REALLY believe we are living in a simulation, but things get really weird sometimes... And then about 15 minutes after I typed that last part, I receive a text message from the guy I went to that Lollapalooza with, first time I've heard from him in almost a year.

Krijgen we weer amuzikaal snob-geluid.

I have tried listening to this before, and I didn't care much for it. I'll give it a second shot today, and hopefully come away with a better feeling. I definitely enjoyed it more this time around. ⭐⭐⭐

After listening to this album I have just one question. Why the fart sounds on the last track? It's so out of left field and out of place that I'm still dumbfounded. The last track really ruins the album which is a shame.

Excellent guitar work on the first track. Unfortunateøy, the rest of the album doesn’t live up to the standard set by the title track.

One of my first real listens of funk. I liked it, but still not a huge fan of the long songs. But more tolerable here for sure. “More power to the pussy/more pussy to the people” preach

Funky and fun. Not sure how often I would put it on, but enjoyed hearing it.

met my bf down at the taco truck…

Ironically Funkadelic is the less-funky iteration of George Clinton’s collective. Fun listen.

so... i have finally finished my exams and you are telling me that i need to lsiten to a super long face-melting, mind-bending guitar solo as relief? but anyway im always as rotten as a nest of maggots. so i listened it in the complete dark, with a blindfold on my eyes. and i can say that the title track is the finest ten minutes of guitar wankery i ever heard. it deserves a high score. but the rest are really mid. 3.5/5

1971. Funk. Rock. Psychedelica. 6/10 Maggot Brain

Funky😎

Gradvis svakere for hver låt dessverre

super funky

Beginning is awesome, ending kinda sucks

Ja okay... Funk nok.. Sejt og memorabelt album art.

Spot on varebetegnelse. Det er syret funky shit

Decent album. Super stupid and Maggot Brain were good songs. Wars of Armageddon was pretty terrible. Overall decent album that holds up well today. 6/10

Cool but the fart sounds ruined it a bit

Funk and Psychedelic Rock is not my thing but this album really impressed me. The opener is a really artistic and beautifully mastered guitar solo and the middle chunk of the album is full of some great funk rock. 7/10

Foonkey

peaked at the first track - the 10 minutes psychedelic excursion was the highlight of the album. the funk side wasn't nearly as gripping.

already listened to it. thought it was good but not massively into it

Very funky, as per the name. I didn’t care for the last for first songs. Some tracks were enjoyable, and the album reminded me of a song by Vulfpeck: Rango II.

Good tunes but not my style :)

It was okay, not my genre

On the lower side of 3

Really liked this, big pink Floyd fan and they sounded similar at parts

Not a typical Greorge Clinton sound. It felt more like background music.

Good music. Liked the experimentation.

Album was okay. It really picked up around Super Stupid.

Ahh another Funkadelic album, I'm becoming quite a fan! This was a cool album not mind-blowing but it was fun

It was fine. It didn't really capture my imaginatoin.

355/1002 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Cool guitar riffs and solos. Boomers need background music too.

PRETTY FUNKY

Can You Get To That is etched in my brain as an all time great funk song. First two tracks are strong but the rest of the album sounds like they overindulged in LSD and it went downhill from there. 2.5/5. Raising to a 3.

interressant aber Ned meins fav track -

I'd rather not drown in my own shit. The first song, Maggot Brain, is fantastic. Overall album is solid. Some strange stuff but some cool guitar and melody, too. Nice to get a mostly instrumental album.

Good funk

Another album I've listened to before, I like it but the only real stand outs are "Can you get to that" & "Hit it and Quit it". Over half the album is the opening and closing 10 minutes songs that are just kind of there. Great album art and name though.

last song bizarre but loved the first song overall pretty cool but not my style

It's a bold move to start your funk-soul album with a 10+ minute guitar solo. This was okay, but I think when it comes to Funkadelic I'm more of a Greatest Hits fan.

Maggot Brain is great background grooving music, Can You Get To That was pretty fun, not so much a fan of the rest but still listenable.

Kiedyś byłoby więcej

The title track fucks. Hard. The rest of the album doesn't really live up to it. Some of the tracks in the middle I enjoyed, but others not so much. Especially whatever the fuck that was at the end. Higher side of 3

Excellent guitar work. Some of the songs are better than others. I eventually skipped ahead during "Wars of Armageddon" because it was just unpleasant to the ear with all the screaming.

Not shabby. Interesting.

p246, 1971. 3 stars. Weird, but in a good way. Suffers from the usual early 70s wankage on some of the tracks, but there's enough here to keep interest. And guitarist Eddie Hazel is a bit good.

meh 3/5

Great guitar work but some of the songs are long winded and rambly.

It’s all fine until the last song. Hesitating to give it a four but I don’t like screaming.. It’s a very brave to put two 8-9min tracks, and the album is just 37 minutes long. I like the first two songs.

i do love me some funk. I appreciate what Funkadelic does. and i will always appreciate this sound. however, this album leaves a lot to be desired. two very long opening/closing tracks that feature a lot of odd sounds and just sound way out there. this feels like less of an album and more of a compilation of unfinished ideas that were put on a record. i dig the middle of the album, so it gets a three but thats where it stops for me.

The first song was really chill and good for just being 10 minutes of guitar. There was a lot of intentional weirdness in the singing and sounds, which made the album really unique. But sometimes the weirdness also took away from actually good sounds, so it was pretty much a wash.

Change my mind: the urge to put a ten-minute track on an album in the 70s is the same urge dudes have to start a podcast with their buddies today, just evolved. At the very least, it’s an entertaining album. There’s definitely a lot to applaud, but I don’t quite get the funk genre enough to fully appreciate the hype. Would be great to have playing with the windows down on a road trip.

I listened to this album Sunday evening while cleaning up house after hosting Easter brunch with friends and Easter dinner with family. It was perfect for that scenario. A 10 minute long guitar solo would normally get on my nerves, but it works while you're cleaning. I was really grooving with this album and was planning on giving it a 4 up until the last song. Who decides putting cats screeching in a song was a good idea? Overall I liked the album, but it lost a star on the last song.

Pretty decent. More psychedelic and less groovy than i might expect

First listen to this album - feel I missed a trick not being stoned

Some good moments.

Definitely a classic, but not one that fully clicks with me, unfortunately. I love a few of these tracks - Can You Get To That is the cream of the crop, for sure, and not just because its sample is the backbone of a certified indie pop by Sleigh Bells - but others, like the title track and its meandering solo, don't have the same punch. Three stars is underrating this, for sure, but I think this is a round-down from 3.5 record.

Groovy, funky and sometimes rocking. Very interesting combination.

nice riffs, bit too psychedelic for my taste.

Good album

Very good, dog meget lang i starten og meget eksperimentelle sange.

Destaques - Hit It and Quit It - You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks - Wars Of Armageddon

Very funky but also quite strange, especially the last song. I was definitely bopping to some of the songs but the album feels a bit unbalanced, maybe even unfinished? It's quite short and I'm not sure some of the elements really make sense in some the of the songs. Still had a good time nonetheless

Either really liked the song or hated it. Ended up saving 4 songs but not the album in Spotify

2.5 rounded up to 3

This absolutely belongs on this list. But for me it's just OK.

Same as the last Funkadelic album - mostly enjoyable if a tad overindulgent

It was OK, wasn't my vibe

Loooove Can You Get to That? and have for a long time, but the rest of the album isn't as good unfortunately

Not great

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. A few great songs I'll listen to again but also a couple that weren't my style. Opened me up to a different style of music which is great.

A freak out.

Holy shit that opening guitar solo... what a sound.

Excellent stoner album.

Great moments but slightly overjerked. Can You Get To That bangs

I don’t have much patience for the opening and closing tracks. But: Sandwiched between these two tedious 10 minutes tracks are 5 five songs that evoke the spirit and sounds of the city, that make an excellent EP. Meanwhile, I really hate the cover of this album. If they wanted to disturb me, they did. I’ll be glad when it’s not showing up all over my phone.

I love Funk, and I was looking forward to this one. Bookended by some rather lengthy tracks, the album is more accessible and enjoyable in the middle. I’m guessing I need to spend more time with this one to appreciate it more fully!

Rock, Jazz, 1971 -> 3

Except for the first track, the music is not clear to me. 6 out of 10.

Correcto

Wasn't sure at first but found myself getting absorbed. Feels like one I might go back to and get more from it on repeat listening

Surprisingly I really like the title track. It's a bit proggy but in a way I actually enjoy! I came across 'Can You Get That' weirdly because of Sleigh Bells who sampled it. Very very different versions but both are excellent. Probably not an album I'll listen to again.

Good stuff, jam band esque

Made me want to go out and listen to a heap of Frank Zappa.

Great tribute to Hendrix. How come I’ve never heard this before?

Given that this was released in 1971, it's very cool. I actually enjoyed it a bit.

The first track was crazy with headphones and the last track was crazy with headphones but more cat sounds and fart noises.

Funky and fun to vibe to. It really starts off on a high note with some great psychedelic rock in Maggot Brain , but it slowly drops off after that (other than Super Stupid, which also had some great solos)until you get to Wars of Armageddon which ends with a screaming lady and fart sounds?

The funk was good, just too into this record.

60’s-70’s funk sound

Weird, outlandish lyrics

Good album

Loved the first track but everything after wasn’t really all that exciting for me (except “Back In Our Minds”)

Going from the first track to the rest of the album gives me whiplash, outside that its pretty funky as the title implies. Some great hooks and beats, its fun but a little dark, if that makes sense.

Loved every song with the exception of the first and last songs which were so awful they each knocked a star off. What a weird unbalanced album. I get what they were going for with those two tracks but man they were unpleasant to listen to

"Maggot Brain", the title track didn't resonate with me quite the way it seemed to with others. Skilled guitar player, no question, but Hazel's guitar solo did not rock my world. Favorites: "Hit it and Quit it" and "Super Stupid". I respected the creativity of "Wars of Armageddon", even if I don't think I will feel ever feel compelled to return. I am not convinced that anyone "needs" to hear this album before they die.

An album blending funk and rock helmed by top-notch musos should be something right up my alley, but honestly the result is thoroughly forgettable. I was already familiar with the title track of this album because a guitarist friend of mine raved about it back in high-school. I never told him this at the time, but I thought it sounded like incredibly run-of-the-mill bedroom noodling. Time has only intensified that opinion and I don't understand why it's so well regarded as a guitar piece. It's possible that my dislike of that track influenced my perception of the rest of the album as there are definitely some funky tracks on here. Can You Get To That is probably the best track with it's use of 12-string acoustic. However, nothing really stands out, and I don't think the rock influences really elevate any of the pieces - they simply sound like funk songs with more distortion.

The first song is incredibly bad and is over 10 mins long. I would have switched off if I wasn't committed to listening to every one of these stupid albums from start to finish. The last song also dreadful but not quite as bad. Respect for the farts around the 7.40 mark. On the positives I was already aware Can You Get To That is a brilliant song and I thought Super Stupid was the pick of the bunch. Maybe a generous 3 as I wouldn't listen from start to finish again.

Funky!!

Wild wah guitars over tense arpeggios to start off, then surprisingly acoustic back porch folksy sound (like if The Band could groove) given the astral funk journey they'd embark on shortly. The gritty guitars and organs work together nicely to pick out some funky riffs. Fun polyvocality with playful interplay between the singers and instruments, its a gospel choir having a party. The guitar keeps shredding wah over the top and the sound moves form the porch into a dirtier garage rock style.

Expected a bit more. I usually enjoy funk/psychedelic music, but this was a bit more mellow and less energetic than I presumed. Still, it was a nice listen, especially considering when it came out.

This was a cool album, but the 2 ten minute songs that bookend it get kind of boring.

Some great tracks but the two 10 minute songs that bookend the album get kind of boring

It's not my type of music definitely but it isn't bad for me as well. I'd say I'm neutral about this music. The one thing that I enjoy is guitar parts!

Again Maggot Brain is great!......what was the rest of that?

Starting this project on a whim, how long will I stick with it? First time intentionally listening to Funkadelic without Parliament. Not what I expected but cool. Oh yeah, I do know "Can You Get To That" and not only bc of the Sleigh Bells song that samples it. Groovy lol Other than that and maybe one other track, this is an album I probably won't come back to.

Decent, but doesn't really stand out with anything in particular.

Wow, Wars of Armageddon is an incredibly annoying piece of cacophony. Other than that, it's grand, but not necessarily something I'll come back to very often.

3.5, in a cosmic way

Pretty funky. 3/5

One mind melting guitar solo does not a great album make - but what a guitar solo in the title track! Feeling kind so we'll go 3 just based on that alone even though the rest I could give or take

These people are sickenly funny. Maggot Brain song dind't have the right to be that smooth!

I'd seen this album cover crop up a lot, so I'm glad to have finally given it a listen. I think this is broadly pretty good. It's quite funky, with some driving beats and uplifting moments. 3.5 rounded down.

Gotta love anything that comes out of Detroit. Its funky. Which is only applicable in about 27% of my daily life.
