8/10 - I liked it. Had me dancing in my kitchen
Occasionally a little bit too weird but really fun nonetheless.
Really good, not a huge fan of funk but it was awesome for what it was
Actually very good music.
incredibly rocking album, dark and intense and sometimes funny, sexy, sad
great cover, amazing album Maggot brain : 10/10 10 minutes songs cannot go bad, epic guitar solo 4*
I really like Parliament/Funkadelic. I just don't think this one is quite as good as One Nation Under A Groove or most of rhe Parliament discography. I don't mean to talk it down, it's a solid 4.
Wow, definitely had me groovin'. I was only really familiar with the Maggot Brain song - a shame considering the other songs are excellent too! Glad to listen to this one.
So many different sounds in one album. Psychedelic
Fantástico¿Donde estabas que no te conocía?
8/10 Incredible Listen ive never heard this Project before and it was a great way to unwind with some good weed
Shame about the fart noises.
I like hw the shorter songs are sandwiched by the jams. I imagine those live went on for a good deal. I had heard a few of these before (Audioslave had covered "Super Stupid" live and I heard it on a bootleg, and "Can You Get To That" has been on commercials. Weird.) Bernie Worrell and George Clinton? I'm sold. Sure the songs range all over the place, but that's what makes it great, it's wide appeal. There's something for everyone here. This is already a 4, and with repeated listens may become a 5...
The title track is incredible. I only discovered it in the last year or so and I marvel at it every time - Eddie Hazel's guitar is just pouring out sorrow. Wow. The rest of the album is solid but not as good as that. Wars of Armageddon is another epic but it feels more spastic or less cohesive. Can You Get to That has a nice opening guitar lick and it's a solid song overall though the vocals don't hold up as well as the rest. Hit It and Quit It is funky and probably my third favorite on the album after Super Stupid, which has better vocals and lyrics and some more wicked guitar playing. I want to give it a 5 for how good Maggot Brain (the song) is but it's not close enough to perfect.
Begins and ends weird (first moments of Maggot Brain and most of Wars of Armaggedon, respectively), but most everything in between is awesome. The guitar solo in Maggot Brain is amazing. Apparently, George Clinton told the guitarist to play like his mother just died - I believe it. Can You Get to That is cool chill funk and then they turn up the dial...Hit It and Quit It is awesome funk, You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks is a very cool track, and then Super Stupid just plain rocks (my favorite on the album). Back in Our Minds sounds like drunk funk, but it's super catchy. But then Wars of Armageddon is seriously out there (screaming baby and what sounds like Cartman screaming "goddammit!", random mooing and screaming, and what sounds like a pretty terrible case of diarrhea), plus it goes on about twice as long as it should. That said, it still has some catchy funk and the band is on fire (particularly the drums). Unfortunately, I think Wars of Armageddon brings the album down to a 4. I was tempted to round up to a 5 because the rest of the album is awesome, but that final track is just way too out there and way too long.
Very cool and different. Will definitely listen again!
Some reallly good tracks, a little filler. Not perfect but iconic for sure
Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Riesiges Solo, traurig, aggressiv usw. Auch die anderen Songs sind sehr gut.
Heard it before and that opening track always hits! Good choice for my first pic of year
On the fringe of my 70s music.
As the name suggests, Funkadelic is funk on some crazy psychedelics. The wild guitar sounds, cowbell, screams, funk - this is a highly unusual yet extremely funky album. Can you get to that?
A fun listen. But I kept waiting for it to kick into high gear. But overall a very strong groove. More instrumental then I expected. I think Hit It and Quit It, was my favorite song.
Very funky!
Already one of my favourites and part of my collection. Funky and weird as hell. Best listened to with high quality headphones.
FUNKY
Fun funky album, I thought it was a pretty good listen Top tracks: Super Stupid, Maggot Brain
This absolutely bangs. I have missed a corner of music and this quest has given me that back. This album is astounding.
After the last several albums, this was a wonderful change of pace and a great ride. I am familiar with George Clinton, some of his work with Parliament and I thought this album would be a fun ride. I was wrong. This was a fantastic voyage. A voyage I took more than a few times over the last couple days. Next times will be with a few tokes and couple beers! Not usually a fan of the guitar solo, but the opening was awesome. Reading the inspiration behind this track made the follow up listening even better. This album blew me away from the opening to the end. Well, up to the fart noises. I will be checking out a lot more of Funkadelic and reintroduce myself to Parliament as well. I originally thought 3.5, but I'm this album and this band has stayed on my mind since my first listen. Well done. 4
4 Man, what a way to start an album. It’s not often that a ten-minute instrumental wins me over, but in this case, to even refer to the title track as such almost feels like an insult. A better description would probably be an act of sheer musical brilliance bestowed upon guitarist Eddie Hazel by the psychedelic powers of LSD and the wacked-out mind of George Clinton. The fact that this was done in one take and was completely improvised is insane and was an immediate sign for me that I wasn’t in for just any album. And sure enough, I wasn’t - things completely shift gears on the second track, Can You Get To That, in the best possible way. It’s much more in line with how I anticipated the album to sound, but I didn’t expect it to be this good. Like, this is funk and rock fusion at its best, and song after song, it just never ceased to go hard as fuck. Across the first five tracks, there are really no skips, but my favorite would probably be the heavy-hitting Super Stupid - it’s noticeably Hendrix inspired, but I really think it puts a number of the legend’s own songs to shame. Unfortunately, that energy doesn’t quite keep up, and the album closes a bit weakly between the meh Back in Our Minds and finale, Wars of Armageddon. I guess that they were trying to bookend the album with long instrumentals, which I don’t hate, but Wars of Armageddon doesn’t come anywhere close to the opener. You feel the duration here - if Maggot Brains embodies an enlightening acid trip, this is definitely a bad trip, complete with screams, sirens, and… fart noises? It feels more like a Frank Zappa song, and I think it kills the momentum just a bit. Still, very, very good listen - the vast majority of the songs here are incredible, and even then, while I didn’t love how it ended, I don’t think it necessarily ruins the album by any means. I definitely need to check out more George Clinton so I can get more of this funk rock sound shot into my veins - this was great. Will be keeping this album in mind the next time I feel Like Slow Disappearing.
This is one heady and heavy album.
The music is fantastic, but the weird samples, and talking, and sound effects took me out of it. Very nearly a five for me.
Fantastic funk rock!
Mostly good, some obnoxious solos tho
- Can You Get To That - Hit It And Quit It - You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks - Super Stupid Very fun album overall, cool funk beats and would definitely listen to again.
Ese primer tema es increíble
this album had everything!! love the storytelling, the funkalicious grooves, the guitar riffs, the good energy... minus one point for the farding and shidding sounds at the end, didn't expect that, didn't enjoy that but it was interesting!!
that first song... WOW
Can You Get to That!!
I was not expecting these guitars.
I’ll have what they’re having!
This is 70's funk in its purest form. The farts near the end of Wars Of Armageddon kind of leave a bad taste and spoil what is otherwise an excellent album.
An album that I feel like I should be more familiar. Not the funk workout I was expecting. More of a journey of psych rock fused with funk and jazz. I’m not surprised to hear that copious amounts of hallucinogenics were involved. I very much enjoyed it.
I can hear shades of Hendrix and Sly and the Family Stone.
Awesome fun music. Not my normal genre, definitely going into sing rotation
Good stuff.
Un clásico imperecedero, mezcla perfecta del jazz y el hard rock.
Pretty amazing. Had heard a little in the past but didn't expect to like the full album as much as I did. 4.5/5
I really like what I'm hearing here, it's experimental and fun and so interesting to listen to, and I really wanted to give it 5 stars but it just falls short of my arbitrary expectations for a 5 star album. I haven't listened to a lot of Funk or Soul but I know that I'm really open to the genre and I'm just looking for that one album to send me to the moon. This isn't it unfortunately but it's quite close. Just more confirmation that I really like Funk. My favorite track was Maggot Brain, it is dark, moody, mysterious, yet funky, and not at all what I expecting from the album going into it.
Stellar album! This one I’ve listened plenty of times over the years and grew to loce move and more. At times they can get filthy, literally put on the stank, but that makes them unique! And the playing is sublime. 8,5 out of 10
A little odd but its good
Trippy in a good way.
Was not expecting mostly instrumental?
Gotta have that funk.
This album really makes you feel like you have maggot brain.
Pretty solid album, less heavy on funk than I was expecting but still good
Starts out as the latest reincarnation of Sly & the family Stone but ends up as a precursor for Red Hot Chili Peppers. Timeless funkrock.
banger album. 8/10
My first time listening to this album. I've never done a deep dive on Funkadelic before so this generator thing is already working for me. Cool album.
This album rocks, funks, souls and fucks Fantastic start for this journey 4,5 stars
Huge fan of George Clinton. This particular record has some great moments but there are many others I prefer.
Loved the first half, especially the title track. Back end gets a little chaotic but is still fun.
The last track overstayed its welcome, but most of the album is a pretty great. You can hear all the ways they influenced bands down the line.
Raises more questions than it answers. Funk is not typically my cup of tea but I enjoyed the skill, the creative execution of concept and the blend of humour and musicality. Song names and musical moments that I recognise from much later pop, pink and even metal. Very interesting new data point in my knowledge of modern musical history
Whew, funky spelunky
Very funky
Some great bits, especially the title track is incredible, but not loving everything.
A fun album, that has clearly been very influential on other artists!
What a diamond in the rough. Great funk music and with a 10 minute opener. Try it, it's great.
I have always loved this album. It’s a psychedelic, mind melting, face exploding, operatic journey into the mind of a man far weirder than anyone else in the funk scene, the minister George Clinton himself. Alternating bw funk masterpieces, punk death anthems, and pacifist hippy rock, this album is one of one. There are really only two songs worthy of relistening, the title track and of course Can You Get To That. The rest is a beautifully weird, powerfully performed, soup laced with about 6 tabs of acid and a pound of pcp.
Great album for sure. The main track is a 6/5 to me and I appreciate how raw „Super Stupid“ sounds. It‘s easy to sell me on long guitar solos and psychedelic music and this album is easily one of my favorite ones. I love the closing track „Wars of Armageddon“. It’s wild but not extreme, so I can listen to first class wild psychedelic jams in comfort.
Fixola
Very funky
- Just from the first song you can hear the emotion in the guitar - The first song is so good - Could take or leave the rest of it, but it has good vibes
suavissimo
Awesome opening Funky
Full on George Clinton, but Mothership remains the best one on here for me.
Nice funk sound. Standouts include Can You Get To That, and Hit It And Quit It.
Great playing on this, good amount of weirdness too without overplaying it. George Clinton for President
Dark. Biting. Brutal. Funky as hell.
Great album, rivals a lot of Parliament's other stuff on its own
Haunting intro. Funkadelic indeed. Music you can get lost in. Playfully soulfull.
Couple of good tracks, mostly music
Funk psicodélico. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Yeah not too bad.
Nice
First track is a 5, the rest is 3.5
The more you listen to it the better it gets. I really enjoyed this one. Funky! 4/5
Pretty cool. Very funky. The song Sleigh Bells sampled in “Rill Rill” is on here.
70s | R&B | Overall score: 3.93 / 78.57% 01. Maggot Brain: 4.5/5 Amazing music about the death of mother earth, the greediness of the wealthy and powerful, the indiference of lowlife population and ascending to higher grounds. What a chilly guitar solo 02. Can You Get to That: 4/5 Carefree music about karma and debts you make along the way, which you'll have to pay later in life 03. Hit It and Quit It: 3.5/5 The Doors, is that you? 04. You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks: 3/5 Basically about poorness and inequality, how one must stand united to fight it, even when dealt bad cards. Overall not one of my favourite songs in this album 05. Super Stupid: 4.5/5 Relatable story about mistaking heroin for coke and sniffing it as if it was. Super stupid but great vocals and amazing guitar solos 06.Back in Our Minds: 3.5/5 A bit trippy for my taste 07. Wars of Armageddon: 4.5/5 A whole journey from routine that kills us mentally to a protest about freedom to distortion of words and meaning until we're left with crumbles of nothing
O pé não parava de bater ao ritmo da música, primeira metade do album muito bom, resto das músicas ouvem-se
Favourite: Can You Get To That Least favourite: Wars Of Armageddon High 8
this album is top tier
1st
Too much guitar solo
Very instrumental heavy, like the vocals
Maggot Brain // Can You Get To That // Hit It and Quit It // You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks //
The guitar on the title track 😳
Fun album, the first track is highlight, but the rest is pretty fun funk.
Nice guitar stuff
Opening track is a blaze anthem
Great, albeit short, album.
Definitely solid, but this felt a little distracted and scattered. Lots of great ideas, just lacking the cohesion and directness I would have liked.
not as funky as it could have been, but still incredibly funky. if it were a true funk album rather than a funk-rock album it might be a 5, but it’s just not funky enough for that. final verdict: funky, but needs more funk.
So funky. Love it.
This is an album. kept my attention throughout since most song sounded different from each other. I would definitely re-listen to songs from this album. I love when a band sounds like their own thing. This band does it well.
Pretty good, funky guitar instrumental.
I'm not sure the diarrhea noises add much to the record but overall its great.
How about the part where they do the poos
Great album, but felt a little on the wild end at times. Thoroughly enjoyed the funk though.
Most def funky
Chaotic, weird, fun, colorful.
I was already familiar with the title track (which features some fantastic guitar), but the rest of this album was new to me. I enjoyed it, so I guess I'll round up from 3.5.
If you listen to Parliament or Parliament-Funkadelic you might, on occasion, forget that Funkadelic itself can be kind of restrained. This is a totally enjoyable, sometimes mellow funky record.
Starts off great with the title track, but kinda fizzles out in the middle. The first track is worth the 4 stars by itself though
I probably know funk as a genre without ever really paying attention to individual albums or groups. Aside from knowing who George Clinton was, I probably couldn’t have named a song by him. This is such a good album, and I’m happy this project got me listening to it.
PSYCHOLOGICAL, COOL ALBUM.
4.25
Loved the funk aspects didn’t so much like the rock influence
i can never be upset when a funk album comes up--even when the title is maggot brain. george clinton, that certainly was a choice. maggot brain was full of delightful, funky funk. it was clearly created and released in the seventies, especially considering the amount of psychedelia. and the soul sound!! what a captivating mix. the album used only instrumentals at times, and gosh the title track was some way to start off the album. that truly was a great instrumental. then on "can you get to that," raymond davis' deep voice was so alluring! even with the farting noises during "wars of armageddon," this album was such an enjoyable listen.
I ain’t ever heard anything like this but I think I liked it.
very good album 88/100
A stellar album - great chemistry between the band, a real journey bookended by two epic tracks, and some incredible playing. Maybe could have filled out a couple of the tracks a bit more for my liking, but I can see this getting regular spins. Fave track: Super Stupid
Impassioned playing, ambitious songwriting, and an undeniable groove. This one’s a classic. Four and a half. Fave track: Hit It and Quit It
Great album that I wouldn't have listened to without this site suggesting it. I need this on vinyl!
Maggot Brain is primarily defined by it's self-titled 10-minute guitar solo epic, which explores desolation in the biggest way possible. Eddie Hazel uses space to his advantage as he sparsely plays in between a subtle groove. It's a monument to stellar, thoughtful music that that properly contemplates it's position of sound throughout. It can often feel like the opening track overshadows the rest of the album, but I feel like that would be a disservice to other songs. Funkadelic expertly hones in on fun, effective funk rock that effectively riffs on a groove. This culminates in the final 9-minute jam Wars if Armageddon that throws a lot at the wall (for better or worse). It is fitting that Maggot Brain ends with annihilation. Sounds of atomic bombs, the low rumble of the explosions, followed by a heartbeat.
AJ: 🤯 🫠
Pretty psychedelic. I was not expecting this!
A great album, though undeniably upheld a lot by its opening, titular track. Thats not to say the rest isn't incredible too though, to say that would be blasphemous. Funkadlelic and Parliament manage to do Funk like no others can, and the tracks on this record are some of the best in the genre.
Funk-nomenal.
Love the Funk!
Father of mother 4/5
Very funky and psychedelic album, liked it a lot! Highlights: Maggot Brain, Can You Get to That
Fuck yes.
casu martzu
Maggot brain is so good it elevates the rest of the album
This album (while I really like it) has always creeped me out. Has to be the absurd 10 minute guitar solo to start the album; it really does set a tone that affects the more basic tracks. e.g. "Can You Get To That" is a great/classic tune with I suppose you'd call a happy/major sound to it - it reminds me of the theme song to the old freaky '70s kids show "Vegetable Soup" which captivated and terrified me (the animation). Disparate and weird thoughts but even after hearing this album for the ~75th time my mind still goes there. Anyhow - the album is of course a keeper, even if I occasionally think putting "Maggot Brain" as the lead track was a terrible move... maybe it works exactly as-intended. e.g would I hear the rest of the album in the same way without the dark/space/haunting (and too long by about 5 minutes, honestly) solo to lead it off? It all would maybe have sounded "more normal" (which it kind of is, not disparaging it tho) eh I don't know. The bookends of the title track and "Wars of Armageddon" are like the horror-bun to the album's party mix tunes on the inside; a combination of great/accessible funk-rock tracks and a proto-metal song in "Super Stupid" - anyways, even if I occasionally get annoyed by a bit of the beginning and end, it's a complete album in the truest sense - listen to the entire thing. 8/10 4 stars.
last 3 songs not avail on spotify
Incredible funk album. A little repetitive, but a banger start to finish.
The opening track, is probably one of the best songs I´ve ever heard. It continues very good along the rest of the songs. I´m happy to discover this band, definitly going to listen more from them.
The title track is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time, and the rest of the album is still pretty great to the end.
sonzao massa
Really good album that opens with possibly one of the best guitar performances ever recorded. The rest of the album is still pretty good but pales in comparison.
Great energy and an incredible "Maggot Brain" song. 4.5/5
At first I was not convinced with beginning but later parts made me enjoy this album. Mix of funk and psychedelic themes is really interesting
Funky
Loved this. Music virtuosity. Listened twice.
Ef eitthvað hefur verið tilraunakennt á sínum tíma, þá er það þetta. Drullugott stöff, mjög svalt!
Funk psicodélico. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Classic funk, sampled a lot. Ahead of its time
Pretty solid.
First track rocks.
Great
See now this, this takes the madness of Scuicide or throbbing Gristle and makes MUSIC. This was so much fun and though slightly off-putting in parts, felt worth it!
Who the hell opens an album with a 10 minute guitar solo with little to no backing band? George Clinton, the genius madman, that’s who! When that solo is Eddie Hazel’s legendary “Maggot Brain”, without a doubt one of the greatest solos ever recorded, I’ve got nothing to complain about either. The rest of the album is a weird mixture of dark, gritty funk and Clinton’s LSD-trips come to live. There’s a lot to love but it doesn’t hit a home run.
Enjoyed it
I knew of this record. In vinyl circles, it's considered a classic. But I'd never heard it. This is great. It's nasty and funky exactly how I need it to be. It's so weird. And I love it.
This is my second Funkadelic album on this generator. I found this one heavier than the other one in that it was skewed more towards psychadelic rock than it was towards funk and soul like the first album of theirs that I reviewed was. This album, obviously, featured the 10 minute epic song Maggot Brain, which was a bonus song on the first of their albums I listened to. It is a phenomenal song that features the amazing skill set of Eddie Hazel. George Clinton was apparently obsessed with shit. Taking shits, talking about shitting... It was all fair game with him. I noticed it in the first album by Funkadelic that I got (One Nation Under a Groove). There is a song on that album called Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (Doo Doo Chasers) that deals heavily with shit. Frequently throughout this album he refers to drowning in shit, and taking shits. Within the first 30 seconds of the first song on the album he talked about shit. Also, the last minute of the song Wars of Armageddon features farting/shitting noises laid over a funky beat for some reason. A passion of his apparently. Overall, another great album! This band was super talented, and I can see how they have influenced the face of music as we see it today. Favourite songs: Super Stupid, Can You Get To That, Hit It And Quit It, "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks", Maggot Brain, I Miss My Baby Least favourite songs: Back in Our Minds, Wars of Armageddon 4/5
The most BONKERS opening ten seconds for any album. Maggots and drowining in your own shit probaboy was the expected norm as album openers go back in 1971. THis is going to sound terribly, terribly wrong: Maggot Brain reminds me of a black Pink Floyd. For that reason alone I love it.
This is so 70s, but mostly in a good way. Also, love Eddie Hazel's guitar
Funking fantastic. I had no idea. The first track melted me. The second is that song I know, but never heard it before. The rest are passable on their own, but as a whole this album's got a juicy vibe. Thanks for the introduction!
Firstly I'm confused as I was so certain we had already had this one but whatever! Or another Funkadelic album. Anyway, I loved this. Loved the way the album built up and has some absolute bangerz on there I already love. Great lyrics too with wise messages
And just like that, Funkadelic gained a new fan. 4.5/5
Fantastic except I didn’t care for the last track.
I discovered this recently. Guitar focused instrumentals are great. Shorter songs are good too.
It's freaky and weird. I like freaky and weird! Parts could fit right in on a Deep Purple album which I wasn't expecting.
Very nice, short album. Loved the title track and 'Can you get to that' is my favourite. Couple of annoying songs but overall very good album.
Un clásico, no puedo decir nada que no se haya dicho antes sobre esta obra maestra. No es mi estilo de música pero es de muy fácil escucha y se disfruta mucho.
I wish I had aged as well as this album.
One of the most tasty guitar albums from the 70s. Maggot Brain is audacious and seductive at the same time. Love it
Wow, I had no idea that Funkadelic got this guitar-heavy! Should have been listening to this for years. I didn’t have a lot of time with it, but will come back for more.
Great finding. Ended too quickly.
That title track is a masterpiece. Funk, rock, and soul blending together in a beautiful package that doesn't at all feel like 10 minutes. The rest of the album did not match up which is the only reason this isn't getting five stars, but it's hard to beat that first song. Eddie Hazel probably levitated and heard the applause of God when he recorded that.
So the title track is really one of the best pieces of psychedelic music out there, and the funk aspects are also amazing, I just wish there was more maggot brain
Vreemd album.
Rather good.
This shit was good. I've always conflated Funkadelic with Parliament and didn't realize they were different. Really loved this bluesy rock
Getting old sucks! Yes there are the hairs that start to pop up on your ears but far worse is the requirement to have a colonoscopy. Yesterday was the day! 1001 decided I should spend that special day with Funkadelic. That was fun. The album that is - not the dreaded camera angle. The guitar work was quite good and the overall sound was good to have in the background while I was focussing on other things. I will definitely listen to this album more often than I revisit the cameraman. Even before I click the vote button, I can hear you saying "Thanks for sharing".
Eddie Hazel's lead guitar really makes this album. The title track is epic, as is the story behind it, and his solos take center stage in a number of the other tracks. I prefer the loose arrangements, improvisations and hard rock feel to the material they released later in the decade. Between a 4 and 5 for me.
A delightfully weird experience
Good album full of some funky riffs and grooves.
Bar none, some of the best guitar playing I've ever heard on a record. Just... shredding, incredible. Album loses a little steam near the end, but it's all fun, funky, and delightfully weird. Favorite tracks: "Maggot Brain", "Super Stupid"
Funky for sure
Good. This would be a 5 if the last song wasn't so weird (and not that good).
This album really encapsulates the essence of 1971, or at least how I imagine it. It's kind of a strange album, with two extended instrumental pieces bookcase five very different songs. It also has a fairly epic ending with a coo-coo clock, fart noises, and a nuclear explosion. It's all nicely funky, though, and that's what holds it together.
This wasn't exactly what I was expecting when I saw Funkadelic come up. The opening track had me with head tilted and brows furrowed trying to figure out what this album was. It was a nice ride though.
rva pis
Ég á mjög erfitt með þetta umslag, en tónlistin er töff.
Interessant àlbum que barreja funk, rock an roll i certa psicodèlia. El primer tema és brutal, més de 10 minuts de riffs, solos i arranjaments vibrants. Bon descobriment.
Last thing I expected was an 8 minute stoner guitar solo to open this up. Super Stupid kills it. Def an inspiration for Lenny Kravitz meets Led Zeppelin heavy riffs. Wars of Armageddon is trippy asf. Weird train bells, alarms, crazy sound effects. Could be something off the Beatles more experimental takes.
enjoyed it. dense funk. would like to regularly revisit.
Very funky very cool
This was great, not sure I've ever heard an album like this before. That opening track was almost prog rock and didn't know what to expect afterwards but i enjoyed it. Good mix of funk and rock.
Surprisingly hypnotic.
A classic, albeit not that funk.
Visceral
Love this album cover. The guitar solo in the song Maggot Brain is stupendous. Smooth and directly from outer space. It wails past Neptune and into my car stereo. Super Stupid is a funky number, much like I expect all Funkadelic songs to be. I was surprised by the diversity. A great album.
Spotify is missing the last 3 tracks, but that was FUN. Major 70s guitar vibes and funky beats.
Track one, eleven minutes of shredding. Track seven ten minutes of funk. In between five short and sharp tracks. Superbly listenable.
Pretty coool
Not your typical funk album
This album has a great vibe to it. I don't know that I had ever listened to it all the way through until this sitting. 'Can You Get To That' is an all-time great song. This album feels very cohesive and I found lots to like on it. The longer opening and closing tracks serve as good psychedelic bookends. I'll definitely continue listening to this one. Standout Tracks: Maggot Brain, Can You Get To That, Hit It and Quit It, Super Stupid, Back In Our Minds.
Love how George Clinton decided to start the album out by having Eddie Hazel pull out the greatest solo of all time. More artists should follow suit. A-
When I was like 16 or 17 years old, the title track to this album blew my mind. I was just getting serious about guitar, and I was obsessed with Edward Hazel's solo on it. I think this and All Along the Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) made me go out and buy a wah pedal. I was just as pleased with Hazel's playing on the rest of the album. I think there's some weaker spots on the album that didn't quite "hook me," but my god, revisiting that opener was something. Love the first half of this album.
The title track is worth 4 stars alone, i like the experimentation but it kinda fell off at the end
Holy shit. What an opening song. Great feel, great guitar solo. The rest of the album was decent.
All bands should open an album with an epic guitar solo. I was moved. I was prepared to give this 5 stars until we got to the watery flatulence sounds at the end of Wars of Armageddon. Why.
Highlights: Maggot Brain, Wars on Armageddon 4,5/5
it's ok
Beaucoup aimé l'expérimentation, je me suis laissé porter. Je le réécouterai certainement.
First 2 songs are great rest are forgettable
This is definitely a five-star cover! 1971, this has been a dangerous period, some really weird shit has been coming out. This was no doubt weird, especially the first and last tracks, which are apparently the highlights for the critics. I, of course, have little patience for music that is best experienced with an altered state of mind. But- In between: pounding, funky, hard, loud, rock songs very different from anything I’ve heard before. I want more. Yeah
Banger. Great band
Banger!
Funky sound
I love this album and hate this album. George Clinton and Funkadelic are a great collection of musicians. "Maggot Brain" is a ten minute self-indulgent guitar solo. Eddie Hazel is out of control. I love the emotion he presents but I hate it because its not my guitar solo. Haters are just jealous. This is psychedelic album with a funk vibe. Difficult to endure in concert format but a pleasure to listen to in a chill, listening room setting. Very dark and angry so not for everyone but I love the emotion and relevance to today even though it was recorded over 50 years ago.
Well that was funky AF! It doesn’t hold the force of the first track but it’s great overall, even if it gets weirdly sounding by the end.
This oldschool funk still breathes a lot of Gospel and Soul heritage. Some sounds are playful and experimental. Not the worst companions for gray and lazy Sunday afternoon.
Fun, consistent, you can hear their influences and who they influenced, maggot brain,
Love this. Great grooves, great guitar, great energy. 4 stars.
This funking rocks.
Some greasy cool era defining punk, groovy very nice. At times however, the album sort of disappears up its own arse and takes you somewhere angular and uncomfortable. Perhaps I'm not up to the challenge but it felt like an occasional lack of focus. I've enjoyed this album for a while though despite its scent of incoherence
Love love love this one.
Still my favourite and their definitive album
I am fortunate enough to own this on vinyl. Great record! The title track is my favorite.
Nice Funk.
This album was awesome but I was expecting something else from the title and band name so the first song dissapointed me but now I love it after relistening. Its a great album but frustratingly plays with expectations and the final song was a bit naff. A great record
Call today Funky Friday! Maggot Brain is not the name I would have gone with but the album was funkadelic regardless. Some long songs peppered with some shorter ones made this a quick listen but was great for getting my morning started. I feel like I've heard this band before, but none of these rang any bells. Great album to end the week on!
I'm not a fan of funk so I was dreading this after seeing the title but it wasn't actually all that bad. Some funk is hiding in there under quite a bit of soul, rock, and R&B. A few songs were great, and some gave me a Santana vibe.
Great sounding album.
Yum yum did not listen rip
Really enjoyed, get the hendrix vibe
77/100: I really wanted to like this album. I really did. I went in fearful it was just gonna be “Maggot Brain” (the song) and a bunch of a filler, but hopeful there were hidden gems in this album. I’m afraid my fears were realized with this one; however, the song “Maggot Brain” is such an unbelievably, indescribably amazing song that this is still a good album in my mind just because it has that one song on it. I could ramble on about Maggot Brain for hours, I could try to describe how the guitar makes me feel with my eyes closed, how I always thought it was bullshit when people said they felt like they were floating during an enjoyable experience until I listened to this song. I could try to describe the chilly feeling of the hair on my arm slowly rising up as my mind melts into the song, but I think that takes away from the ineffable beauty of this song. Just listen to it.
Sehr interessant
Pretty good. Probably very influential and revolutionary for its time.
What a ride! The title track is such a gripping and moving work of art. The funk surely spreads quickly after this song ends and begins discordant chaos. It's fun and groovy, but I feel it doesn't always land perfectly. I'd say there are some weaker spots in the second half, but Super Stupid was definitely a highlight on the side B.
This was awesome. So much personality in this album, and the range is great. More than a few songs you could jam out to, absolutely worth a re-listen. Closer to a 4.5.
That guitar solo is insane.
Its cool.
Me encanto
Fun fact: I've seen George Clinton shows more times than I've actually listened to anything he recorded. Another one of those things I just never got around to but also something that was harder to do in the times before streaming. You'd read a lot about Funkadelic and Parliament but actually getting to hear it was another thing. Missed opportunity as this is really good.
Classic
Discovered this album a few years ago based on an internet stranger's recommendation. It's admittedly the only Funkadelic album I've ever heard, so I have little context. The Hendrix-style solos, hypnotic beats, drug-fueled lyrics, and rythmic mantra-like verses all together give you this fun musical trip. Highly recommend listening to this with headphones or in front of a 2.0 setup (the left-right panning adds a another layer to the listening experience).
Didnt expect this album to be this fun after the opening track A little bit all over the place in the middle and wars of armaggedon is a little bit too playful and experimental for my taste if we are talking serious analysis It is, as already said, so funky and fun you can accept it and just vibe with it. Not a lot of cohesion and order. What a guitar in the title track, legendary stuff.
Funky, psychedelic, even progressive. The first song Maggot Brain was the charm of the album, a 10 minutes solo that remind me a lot of Hendrix's work. Favorite songs: Maggot Brain and Super Stupid
Har sett da bildet 1000 gonga men aldri høyrt albumet. Ikkje da eg forventa va egentlig ganske bra
Possibly a new band to investigate, much more in depth than I thought.
My first experience w/ Funkadelic was in the movie PCU, ya'll remember that one? Classic. Anyway I loved this album & Maggot Brain is an amazing song I needed in my life. Wars of Armageddon not so much
listened to again face melting funky
yir boi
The guitar in the first song was enough to bump this album up an extra star, even with the stranger psychedelic aspects of the last song. It was a great mix of funk and rock
Funky, with some great guitar and good bass riffs.
Maggot Brain was left on repeat for days at a time in my dorm room, but hadn't heard the other tracks in a while. Some of it crosses the line for me in terms of good taste, but hard to argue with it overall.
Iconic
Awesome opening track, cool tunes, very funky.
Some absolute bangers on here, can see why it's a classic
Really enjoyable. Definitely on the party play list now!
Absolutely amazing psychedelic Rock at its finest Will be listening to again
I recognize a few songs that have been sampled and the licks are good.
Such a strong opening for an album.
Funky, chunky, trippy, you already know
A striking, terrifying cover/album name combo. George Clinton trades in some hard hitting funk for some wild cool licks. This album is weird and wooly, and I'm hear for it (get it?)
This is pretty impressive. One of the best new albums (for me) that I got on this project, for sure. A little bit strange in the last songs, but still impressive!
Ahhh.......yes I needed this! I pity the fool who this doesn't reach in a primal orgasmafunkadelic way. I was too young to appreciate the 70's but it's now my favourite decade....
This is the third album by funk rock band Funkadelic. As the band name suggests, this album is mostly psychedelic funk music, but it also has some R&B and rock elements sprinkled in. The most popular track is the first one - title song "Maggot Brain" - which is a 10 minute long trippy and eerie journey into the stratosphere of your imagination. You may feel all types of emotions while listening to the psychedelic first song, but the next 5 songs will have you bumping to the funky tunes. The album then culminates with a wild 9 and a half minute track of the whole band jamming out with a lot of psychedelic sound effects added in. The album keeps you interested for the entire ride, which to me indicates a great album. It's a monument of psychedelic funk and a defining moment of Black rock from the 70's. It's crazy to me that I've never before heard of this album, the band, or these songs, because it was all a good jam. Better late than never I suppose. Everyone should give this insane album a listen!
Feels like I'm going to regret not giving this a 5.
the intro is a pure masterpiece, really great album
There's some great stuff in here and it's well worth a listen. On balance, the genius moments outweigh the cuckoo-clock-shrieking of the last track
I was going to give this 3 then heard the audacious sound of a fart on track 7. Bold. Brave. Inspiring.
4.5
Veel gedraaid, heel tof.
Wat een heerlijke plaat! Dat eerste nummer, met die gitaren, is prachtig. Zo, ik zit op het vliegveld en ga m’n schade van deze week inhalen :).
Mind blown! First time listening. I'm not sure how the opening track got me, it almost became transcendent. The rest of the tracks flowed rockingly, until that oddly annoying metallic pronging noise throughout the penultimate track. I was close to giving it a 5, but the metallic annoyance down-starred it. An otherwise sublime album!
Proto funk rock
Good funk album, was a fan throughout. Will need to revisit it when I'm more focused. Probably 4.5/5 on initial impressions.
Instrumental envolvente.
Great album, amazing guitar work
Specific mood but much enjoyed
What on earth did I just listen to? Great.
This is the kind of psychedelic I’m talking about. Killer guitars and that’s almost all u need. Can you get to that is really good
Incredible. The title song is one of the few 10 minutes songs that I have to listen to all the way through any time I hear it. This is really close to 5 stars but there are a couple of duds on the album. I'd listen to it any time though.
Blooming loved this until the farts.
This was fun and short.
ive listened to this one
Listened Before? N WOW! The title track just blew my face off! The rest of the album is pretty good, but the first song is a crazy face-melting classic. Didn't expect that. Added to Library? P Songs added to Playlist: Maggot Brain
Wow. My second listen through. It deserves a third listen. Is this the funk Dark Side of the Moon?
A lot of fun, the words give "Maggot Brain" give me the willies but doesn't great art need to shake you from your comfort zone?
A genre defining album that is still mind blowing today.
Fun and interesting.
Really enjoyed it, one I really wasn't familiar with but it absolutely blew me away
This entire album has been sampled, I guarantee. Great vibes and sounds.
That into guitar solo is hard to beat
Fun - excellent moody atmospheric opener and then some pretty standard funk by numbers jobs
Rating: 7/10 Best songs:Hit it and quit
I'd heard of this album but I'd never actually listened to it before. I was expecting something funk-based, but instead it's more psychedelic rock with a strong social conscience. I feel like I appreciate the craft of the album more than the album itself. I'm not sure if I'd actually listen to this again.
Nice album!
