Maggot Brain

I was about to give this a 4. It had so many great hits. Super Stupid seems like early Gary Clark Jr. There was some funk and some hard rock. The opening track was cool too. Then, these last two songs...weren't...great. Back in Our Minds was unsettling and Wars of Armageddon was just a bunch of noises over funk.

Good not great.

Bit of Funk never hurt anyone. Got to be in a sassy mood to really get behind this though.

I won't deny that this was a genre-defining/transforming record. Despite primarily being a funk group, there's more emphasis on the guitar here thanks to one Eddie Hazel. Definitely inspired by Jimi Hendrix with the fuzz and "wah" effects utilized throughout. I must've thought this album was better than I remembered though, as it came off as inconsistent after my most recent listen. Yes, the opening track's guitar solo and "Super Stupid" were great for the above reasons, but things just slipped into more of an eccentric mess from there.

El cierre del álbum, “Wars of Armageddon”, es una absoluta delicia y locura auditiva: psicodélico, caótico, revolucionario y grotesco, pone el foco en la libertad y el poder. Este último tema es una absoluta locura auditiva que comienza con el llanto de un bebé que causa molestia a un ciudadano y termina con el latido de un corazón y un último toque musical, representación de la demencia colectiva de la humanidad. It was okay

3.5 stars. Really liked this, especially the opening and closing tracks - the middle ones were just okay. Not necessarily my usual type of music but it was a great listen with some sounds that really tickled my ears and I'd happily give it another spin.

A bit of deja vu as I press submit on ATCQ with a comment about wishing I had known their music better when I saw them on Lollapalooza and then seeing (what was essentially) another group about which the same thing could be said. Same Lollapalooza, even. The universe is so weird. While listening to this album this morning, I am reading an article about the death of Dave Parker and it mentions his famous tee shirt that said "If you hear any noise it's just me and the boys boppin" which was inspired by lyrics from Parliament's "Mothership Connection." I don't REALLY believe we are living in a simulation, but things get really weird sometimes... And then about 15 minutes after I typed that last part, I receive a text message from the guy I went to that Lollapalooza with, first time I've heard from him in almost a year.

Dit album is gemaakt om te bewijzen dat het gemaakt kan worden. Ik schrik altijd als ik dat lees. Krijgen we weer amuzikaal snob-geluid. Maar het valt me mee. Dit album lijkt te draaien om het (lange) titelnummer. Het nummer met de minste funk nota bene. Het heeft juist een wat zwart gitaargeluid. Er volgt een hele hoop vergeetbaarheid en een sample-extravagance. Met wel weer een koekoeksklok, speciaal voor een luistermaatje.

I have tried listening to this before, and I didn't care much for it. I'll give it a second shot today, and hopefully come away with a better feeling. I definitely enjoyed it more this time around. ⭐⭐⭐

After listening to this album I have just one question. Why the fart sounds on the last track? It's so out of left field and out of place that I'm still dumbfounded. The last track really ruins the album which is a shame.

so... i have finally finished my exams and you are telling me that i need to lsiten to a super long face-melting, mind-bending guitar solo as relief? but anyway im always as rotten as a nest of maggots. so i listened it in the complete dark, with a blindfold on my eyes. and i can say that the title track is the finest ten minutes of guitar wankery i ever heard. it deserves a high score. but the rest are really mid. 3.5/5

Cool but the fart sounds ruined it a bit

Funk and Psychedelic Rock is not my thing but this album really impressed me. The opener is a really artistic and beautifully mastered guitar solo and the middle chunk of the album is full of some great funk rock. 7/10

It took me a goddamn long time to unlock and appreciate the magic of this (partly because I despise the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and John Frusciante seems to be a mean little copycat of George Clinton's ravaging guitar fury on the title track). While I do enjoy some good scattered, all-over-the-place records, the pendulum on Maggot Brain swung a little too fast for me to catch up. Still, minus a few points of the production choices, such as the ultra-heavy delay on the drums in "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks", the metallic dings on "Back in Our Minds" and, ofc, the farting noises on the closer. Sure, a good fart can make one laugh harder than the hardest-hitting joke, but a "joke" doesn't get better when told a bazillion times over. Too much "humor" tends to ruin the listening experience for me (mainly because it wears off so quickly), but there's still so much to like on Maggot Brain nevertheless.

No conocía nada sobre este género p-funk y genial haberlo conocido de esta forma, buen álbum que mezcla rock, funk, con algo psicodélico haciendo buen honor a Hendrix. No se si sería un álbum que escucharía a menudo pero como historia me gustó. Maggot brain es un tema brutal, la manera de relatar algo la guitarra espectacular. Aunque me parece extraña la manera en que está mezclada la canción por momentos la guitarra se paneaba extraña y de colaba.

Can You Get To That is etched in my brain as an all time great funk song. First two tracks are strong but the rest of the album sounds like they overindulged in LSD and it went downhill from there. 2.5/5. Raising to a 3.

I'd rather not drown in my own shit. The first song, Maggot Brain, is fantastic. Overall album is solid. Some strange stuff but some cool guitar and melody, too. Nice to get a mostly instrumental album.

Good funk

Another album I've listened to before, I like it but the only real stand outs are "Can you get to that" & "Hit it and Quit it". Over half the album is the opening and closing 10 minutes songs that are just kind of there. Great album art and name though.

It's a bold move to start your funk-soul album with a 10+ minute guitar solo. This was okay, but I think when it comes to Funkadelic I'm more of a Greatest Hits fan.

Maggot Brain is great background grooving music, Can You Get To That was pretty fun, not so much a fan of the rest but still listenable.

Great guitar work but some of the songs are long winded and rambly.

It’s all fine until the last song. Hesitating to give it a four but I don’t like screaming.. It’s a very brave to put two 8-9min tracks, and the album is just 37 minutes long. I like the first two songs.

i do love me some funk. I appreciate what Funkadelic does. and i will always appreciate this sound. however, this album leaves a lot to be desired. two very long opening/closing tracks that feature a lot of odd sounds and just sound way out there. this feels like less of an album and more of a compilation of unfinished ideas that were put on a record. i dig the middle of the album, so it gets a three but thats where it stops for me.

The first song was really chill and good for just being 10 minutes of guitar. There was a lot of intentional weirdness in the singing and sounds, which made the album really unique. But sometimes the weirdness also took away from actually good sounds, so it was pretty much a wash.

Change my mind: the urge to put a ten-minute track on an album in the 70s is the same urge dudes have to start a podcast with their buddies today, just evolved. At the very least, it’s an entertaining album. There’s definitely a lot to applaud, but I don’t quite get the funk genre enough to fully appreciate the hype. Would be great to have playing with the windows down on a road trip.

I listened to this album Sunday evening while cleaning up house after hosting Easter brunch with friends and Easter dinner with family. It was perfect for that scenario. A 10 minute long guitar solo would normally get on my nerves, but it works while you're cleaning. I was really grooving with this album and was planning on giving it a 4 up until the last song. Who decides putting cats screeching in a song was a good idea? Overall I liked the album, but it lost a star on the last song.

Definitely a classic, but not one that fully clicks with me, unfortunately. I love a few of these tracks - Can You Get To That is the cream of the crop, for sure, and not just because its sample is the backbone of a certified indie pop by Sleigh Bells - but others, like the title track and its meandering solo, don't have the same punch. Three stars is underrating this, for sure, but I think this is a round-down from 3.5 record.

Very funky but also quite strange, especially the last song. I was definitely bopping to some of the songs but the album feels a bit unbalanced, maybe even unfinished? It's quite short and I'm not sure some of the elements really make sense in some the of the songs. Still had a good time nonetheless

I don’t have much patience for the opening and closing tracks. But: Sandwiched between these two tedious 10 minutes tracks are 5 five songs that evoke the spirit and sounds of the city, that make an excellent EP. Meanwhile, I really hate the cover of this album. If they wanted to disturb me, they did. I’ll be glad when it’s not showing up all over my phone.

I love Funk, and I was looking forward to this one. Bookended by some rather lengthy tracks, the album is more accessible and enjoyable in the middle. I’m guessing I need to spend more time with this one to appreciate it more fully!

Surprisingly I really like the title track. It's a bit proggy but in a way I actually enjoy! I came across 'Can You Get That' weirdly because of Sleigh Bells who sampled it. Very very different versions but both are excellent. Probably not an album I'll listen to again.

Given that this was released in 1971, it's very cool. I actually enjoyed it a bit.

The first track was crazy with headphones and the last track was crazy with headphones but more cat sounds and fart noises.

Funky and fun to vibe to. It really starts off on a high note with some great psychedelic rock in Maggot Brain , but it slowly drops off after that (other than Super Stupid, which also had some great solos)until you get to Wars of Armageddon which ends with a screaming lady and fart sounds?

The funk was good, just too into this record.

Going from the first track to the rest of the album gives me whiplash, outside that its pretty funky as the title implies. Some great hooks and beats, its fun but a little dark, if that makes sense.

Loved every song with the exception of the first and last songs which were so awful they each knocked a star off. What a weird unbalanced album. I get what they were going for with those two tracks but man they were unpleasant to listen to

"Maggot Brain", the title track didn't resonate with me quite the way it seemed to with others. Skilled guitar player, no question, but Hazel's guitar solo did not rock my world. Favorites: "Hit it and Quit it" and "Super Stupid". I respected the creativity of "Wars of Armageddon", even if I don't think I will feel ever feel compelled to return. I am not convinced that anyone "needs" to hear this album before they die.

An album blending funk and rock helmed by top-notch musos should be something right up my alley, but honestly the result is thoroughly forgettable. I was already familiar with the title track of this album because a guitarist friend of mine raved about it back in high-school. I never told him this at the time, but I thought it sounded like incredibly run-of-the-mill bedroom noodling. Time has only intensified that opinion and I don't understand why it's so well regarded as a guitar piece. It's possible that my dislike of that track influenced my perception of the rest of the album as there are definitely some funky tracks on here. Can You Get To That is probably the best track with it's use of 12-string acoustic. However, nothing really stands out, and I don't think the rock influences really elevate any of the pieces - they simply sound like funk songs with more distortion.

The first song is incredibly bad and is over 10 mins long. I would have switched off if I wasn't committed to listening to every one of these stupid albums from start to finish. The last song also dreadful but not quite as bad. Respect for the farts around the 7.40 mark. On the positives I was already aware Can You Get To That is a brilliant song and I thought Super Stupid was the pick of the bunch. Maybe a generous 3 as I wouldn't listen from start to finish again.

Funky!!

Wild wah guitars over tense arpeggios to start off, then surprisingly acoustic back porch folksy sound (like if The Band could groove) given the astral funk journey they'd embark on shortly. The gritty guitars and organs work together nicely to pick out some funky riffs. Fun polyvocality with playful interplay between the singers and instruments, its a gospel choir having a party. The guitar keeps shredding wah over the top and the sound moves form the porch into a dirtier garage rock style.

Expected a bit more. I usually enjoy funk/psychedelic music, but this was a bit more mellow and less energetic than I presumed. Still, it was a nice listen, especially considering when it came out.

Discazo, lo re disfrute. Todas las canciones tienen mucho groove. No sé cómo, pero logran que siempre quiera moverme a la par del ritmo. Y en general suenan súper bien juntos, muy integrados cada uno por su parte. Hay dos cosas que no me convencieron: la calidad del sonido (que bueno igual por la época no tengo de qué quejarme) y que siento que todos los temas están muy cargados de cosas. Ya me pasó con otro album, uno de Stevie que no recuerdo el nombre. Pero personalmente siento que esa como pared sonora es demasiado y a veces me agobia. Pero en general fue muy bueno y lo disfrute. Tengo que escuchar más suyo. 7/10

Starting this project on a whim, how long will I stick with it? First time intentionally listening to Funkadelic without Parliament. Not what I expected but cool. Oh yeah, I do know "Can You Get To That" and not only bc of the Sleigh Bells song that samples it. Groovy lol Other than that and maybe one other track, this is an album I probably won't come back to.

Decent, but doesn't really stand out with anything in particular.

Wow, Wars of Armageddon is an incredibly annoying piece of cacophony. Other than that, it's grand, but not necessarily something I'll come back to very often.

I'd seen this album cover crop up a lot, so I'm glad to have finally given it a listen. I think this is broadly pretty good. It's quite funky, with some driving beats and uplifting moments. 3.5 rounded down.

Gotta love anything that comes out of Detroit. Its funky. Which is only applicable in about 27% of my daily life.

This album was pretty fun! I am not sure how often I will return to it, but it was a good time! The solo song of "Maggot Brain" was fun, although it did go a little long in my opinion. However, what the fuck was "Wars of Armageddon"....the burping throughout it was so weird. Overall though, I did enjoy most of this album. Probably more of a 3.5 Liked songs: "Can You Get To That" , "Hit It and Quit It" , "You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks" , "Super Stupid"

Pre-listening thoughts: my brain feels like maggots rn Post/during listening thoughts: not the opening song being nine minutes… I was sorely mistaken expecting just a funk album I suppose. Sue me for seeing the name Funkadelic and expecting funk. Instead it’s a psychedelic rock fusion album. I think I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did. The genre blend just isn’t quite working for me today because I really did just want a pure funk album sorry 😭. Much more rock oriented than I was expecting. Very Hendrixesque. First song is incredible. Also Rill Rill sample! Pretty good but lots of the middle got lost in the shuffle.

Van deze intro lijkt het of het een art album zal zijn. Zeer mooie intro. 2. 3.5/5 Mooie groove, mooie bas, wel raar met de harmonieën maar maakt het net goed. Really funky, enjoyed

Wasn’t so keen on the title track but I liked some of these songs. Some are reminiscent of early Talking Heads.

Undeniably funky, but very all over the place tonally - loved the title track, but the rest just feels a bit rough and unfinished in places. Can You Get To That has some great vocal work too, but it all just felt a bit... There? Nothing too amazing, sorry Funkadelic but I don't tee hink I'll be back to this one.

This is really good music and for me it's very situational a to when id like to listen to it. The song Maggot Brain has parts that sounded like Pink Floyd, specifically Wish You Were Here (which came 4 years later).

Reading all the raving reviews makes me think that I missed something here.. this album was fine but forgettable in my opinion. I get experimentalism but feel like this could have been better. 3/5

Pretty slick entry. Maybe not the best album but I can appreciate the long jams that bookend a pretty fun 35 minute album. Hard not to get behind a band called Funkadelic that seems to just want to get together and have fun making music. Love seeing Bernie Worrell of Talking Heads (and elsewhere) pop up as a band member. 2.89 stars

Looks and album titles can be deceptive. As illustrated here. One look at this album and I wasn’t looking forward to it. But what a great guitar solo to start it all off. Not what I’d expect on a funk album and it wouldn’t have sounded out of place on one or two of my prized harder sounding prog rock albums. Well produced sound as well. Guitar echos bouncing from my speakers to every corner of my lounge. This was 10 in the morning so what it’ll sound like at night after a few beers?? That first track was perhaps the highlight (so much so that I bookmarked it as a favourite) as it soon reverted to what I expected and a funk sound which does not do it for me. But then Super Stupid came along and I could have been listening to Hendrix. Wiki dares to state that at times tracks on the album bettered Hendrix. Wouldn’t go that far but a great effort as regards that one track. The long last track, Wars of Armageddon I was expecting another great guitar solo but it turned out to be an overlong jam. But that great first track really made this album and worth the entrance price alone. Cover art was intriguing. Was that a head of someone buried whose brain had been infested with maggots or just a carelessly discarded head? Either way not worth pondering too long at 10am. 3/5 18/10/24

You know what, my expectations were genuinely on the floor when I saw a nine minute track titled Maggot Brain up first. I wanted to hate it and give it 1/5; but, and I can’t pinpoint when, I actually started to really enjoy it

That was a nice surprise. Shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, or an album by its title! Enjoyable guitar work as I’d expect from this lot, but some really weird samples that spoilt things.

I seem to like George Clinton's sound, mellow stuff going on in the background and a fuzzed up whah whah fest of a guitar. But I don't like it enough to listen to it as a go to.

That first song set the expectations too high

First song made me text my dad. You get LOST on that track, you zone the fuck OUT. I described it to dad as being taken out of your body, being given a power wash, and being put back in. That's powerful music. Now there were a few songs after that that did nothing like that for me but the talent never left the building so yes.

Side one: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Side two: ⭐⭐ I guess I take the average? Waste of a great start.

Compared to other Funkadelic albums I think this is a bit weak. Hit it and Quit It is a stand out. I don’t get the hype around the Maggot Brain guitar solo.

I’ve been vacillating between liking this album and not liking this album. Can You Get to That and Back in Our Minds were pretty good. But otherwise, eh.

This is a weird record. It's funky. But it's also quite a bit maudlin at times. I'm used to my funk being up up up all the time and no slowing down. Power to the pussy, that's a sentiment I can appreciate. There's so much exploration here, and I don't think all of it landed. Was a cool ride, but not one I'm gunna take again.

Never heard this album before. The first song is a great instrumental which sounds ahead of its time. Pretty much everything on this album works. I bet they were amazing to see live. Strong 3 stars. "Power to the pussy"

honestly a little disappointed overall. aside from Wars Of Armageddon it fell a little flat for me with less substance than some of the other stuff i heard from them. i feel bad giving it a 3 but i don’t think it cracks 4 with only having one song with relisten ability

Not my favorite P-Funk album. It was fun hearing where some of the samples came from. Not sure if i'd listen to it again.

I think I tend towards the Parliament version of this band over the Funkadelic version. Though there is some great guitar work on this album, overall, I liked it just okay.

The contrast from the first and second song is crazy. The first one is a 10 minute guitar solo where the guitarist is shredding while the second one is a pretty normal song. This through me for a loop especially because most of the album afterwards is normal funk. Then the last song is weird as hell (some guy farts on the microphone!). This album is both pretty decent and absolutely sucks so I'll just give it a 3 and stop thinking about.

Funky Probably wouldn’t listen again

Who would have thought that band with the name Funkadelic would sound funky? Jokes aside this was a solid album that doesn't appear to take itself too seriously. I wouldn't call it my favorite, and the fart noises at the end were definitely unnecessary. Musically it focused heavily in the instruments, which were all solid.

Starts out slow- i understand the stylistic choice (especially with the message of knocking up the earth and imagery of decay / maggots) but not the sound I look for in Funk. Album then picks up and becomes much more high-energy and fun. I liked "Hit It and Quit It" a lot. Definitely a lot of strong emotion and raw sound in this album

A bit of an odd one. I really like the middle section, but it’s bookended by two, ten minute tracks, that take up 2/3 of the album. The first one is a noodling Hendrixesque guitar solo, the last track is a bit of a sloppy jam. The middle part is great funk but there’s just not an album’s worth of music here. 3 stars I guess, coz it’s really good but also pretty lame.

This is the 3rd George Clinton album I've had in a month, but it was probably my least favorite. The opener Maggot Brain is pretty good and I swear I was listening to Hendrix in it with how expressive the guitar was. But the rest of the album didn't really strike me a funk album and was pretfy different from what I expected. I knew the riff in Can You Get To That, which was cool. I like what this group will become more than I like this album.

It was pretty good, lots of instruments and some various vocals too. It’s Halloween-ish and very psychedelic. 6.5/10 overall. Would recommend to at least give it a try.

Groove and samples galore.

Five Sly-and-the-Family-Stone-style pop funk songs bookended by a ten minute guitar solo and a ten minute psychedelic freak out. Now, the five pop funk songs are solid and the guitar solo had its moments, but I think this album may be a bit overrated. I have always liked Parliament Funkadelic, but I have never loved them. This album does nothing to change that opinion.

10 min iconic guitar jam

There was a lot more rock than funk than I was expecting, at least early in the album. Which is a good thing because I'm not usually totally sold on funk and I enjoyed most of it. Solid album and lots of good stuff going on throughout and plenty to like.

I was excited to hear this one, I had it in mind that Funkadelic were in some way mindblowing, but in reality I didn't feel this way at all. Kinda dull to be honest.

Really interesting lore behind the ultimate band, Parliament-Funkadelic. The most interesting song musically was Back in Our Minds. My favorite song was the opener, Maggot Brain. Pretty good overall!

I was in a bad mood before I put this on and this album helped me feel better. I had my eyes closed and I felt like I was having a dream . I've always wanted to listen to this having seen my friends listening to it. My favourite song was 'back in our minds' The guitar was striking I'm not sure I've ever felt a guitar quite like how I did listening to this

oh man, this album...well maybe not the whole album but that first song is incredible!! I say maybe not the whole album because I haven't listened to the whole thing before. I don't even remember how or where it was that I heard the Maggot Brain track but it is so awesome!! I'm excited to hear this today. It's a 10 min track with an interesting intro. The lyrics are so strange. Well there are only 7 tracks out of 10 on that album available on Spotify. The rest were okay. Nothin like that first one. So I'll give it 3 stars.

It was fine but similar to a lot of other rock funk groups. It had a lot of Jimi Hendrix vibes, with the lead singer even sounding like him. Wars of Armageddon, I get was supposed to be sounds competing, but it was just unpleasant to listen to.

Really enjoyed. Great funk sound and can move to the rhythm the whole time.

As unattractive as the title is, the album is pretty good. The style mixed with the title really combined together to bring the word "Nasty" to the front of my mind ---and this is the good kind of Nasty. Favorite track "Maggot Brain" 3/5

Hendrix was very influential to the makers of this album. If you like Hendrix this is for you Like being in Harlem in 1972. Reminded me of a 1960/70s stage show like 'Hair' Innervisions by Stevie Wonder is more funky. This must be 'delic' then.

Was on in the background while I did the dishes. Provided a pleasant and funky atmosphere. I couldn't help myself but to wipe my dishes in accordance with the music. This piece of art is so influential, I grew an afro whilst in its embrace.

I heavily favour the Parliament side of the Parliament-Funkadelic coin, but with that being said this album is a great one if you like 10-minuts guitarsolos and instruments overlapping heavily. The 7-songs album for me was kinda hard to get through, but in the end I liked it more and more. I liked the roughness in the vocals and the edginess of the drums. Overall experience was good, and I see why it has made the list, but 10-minuts guitarsolos is a couple minuts too much for my style.

Maggot Brain is 5/5. Absolute beast of a track. I will probably be using this to benchmark new headphones/speakers in the future. The rest of the album is ok. Very forgettable. Short enough to not become annoying. Inclined to give it 4 stars, but honestly, my enjoyment of this album solely hinges on a single song, which is rather bad when considering it as a complete piece of art.

The combination of prodigious and guitar virtuosity, coupled with similarly virtuoso drumming, can be both mesmerising and annoying. I think this strays into the latter. The clunky production and addition of household sounds is more, well, clunky than pink floyd esque. At times this felt like the sound track of a blaxploitation movie from the early 70s, which makes sense I suppose.

Funkadelic is legendary in so many ways. When I saw them in concert it was probably one of the best live shows I’d ever seen. This album has some bops on it: You and Your Folks; Can You Get To That; Super Stupid. James Brown may have started funk but Funkadelic perfected it!
