Maggot Brain

The combination of prodigious and guitar virtuosity, coupled with similarly virtuoso drumming, can be both mesmerising and annoying. I think this strays into the latter. The clunky production and addition of household sounds is more, well, clunky than pink floyd esque. At times this felt like the sound track of a blaxploitation movie from the early 70s, which makes sense I suppose.

Overall didn't like this. Quite an original concept but of its time nevertheless. A couple of tracks were a little Hendrixesque, especially vocally. Overall not really my thing.

Astounding instrumentals and PERFECT sound mix. Title track is obviously legendary and every element on the rest of the album seamlessly, effortlessly fits together. Incredibly modern sound for its time. Listened to: hiking down Acatenango. Favorite tracks: Maggot Brain, Hit It and Quit It, Super Stupid

Hmmmm yum yum yummmyyy. Love how certain aspects were drumming forward without it dominating the whole albumn. Plus themes of freedom and resistance that the lyrics capture slay alongside the very decadent and hectic instrumentals. Cool synth/organ vibe solo and lics plus ofc the lovelllyyyyy guitar solos. Especially in war of Armageddon. Normally annoyed by that waaaa waaa guitar tone but here it worked so well. Loved the drums in WoA too, like super janky but really drives it. Plus you know this girl loves a cowbell

5.0 + The idea of beginning any album with a 10-minute guitar solo is generally a non-starter but Eddie Hazel plays with such devastating sadness that somehow those emotions set the stage for a raucous runaway locomotive ride to armageddon. There's no other record like "Maggot Brain", and in this age of AI, I can't imagine anything will ever come close to this bizarre, funky alchemy of moods and genres.

This one was not at all to my taste, but I did hear lots of things that I think influenced later songs and bands that I do like. If I could give it a 1.5 I would because I suspect it was a very influential record for a lot of people.

This spoke to me. Initially, I rated this 4 stars. But I keep coming back to it and it just keeps speaking. So I used the edit feature for the first time to make this 5 stars.

Some of the tracks sounded like unplanned jam sessions.

Immediately jumping off with one of the all time great guitar solos, Eddie Hazel opens the album on a somber but sprawling note on the title track. The oft-sampled Can You Get To That brings things into brighter hippy-washed grooves that carry for much of the album. Great songs and a million ideas being explored throughout the album by bandleader / producer George Clinton.

Wow, not what I was expecting! I liked all of this - except the last song, Wars of Armageddon. But starting with Maggot Brain - the guitar work, just good music. Will be coming back to hear more from this group.

If I had the talent to make music then this is the music I would make. Funky psychedelia with a sense of humour. Eddie Hazell on guitar is as blistering as Van Halen or Hendrix. Wonderful.

Funkadelic is legendary in so many ways. When I saw them in concert it was probably one of the best live shows I’d ever seen. This album has some bops on it: You and Your Folks; Can You Get To That; Super Stupid. James Brown may have started funk but Funkadelic perfected it!

Just the first 2 tracks make this a great album. Maggot Brain is Funkadelic going psychedelic. Can You Get to That has always been a song i dug a lot but then got a second wind with me when Mt Joy started covering it in the middle of Astrovan. Anyway, I like this album a lot.

That was one weird, funky album. Kind of liked it but pretty sure one listen will be all it gets from me. Would love to know what the artistic version was behind the Armageddon number. All in all, strange but in a good way.

It was ok

I didn't think farting sounds would make for required listening before I died, but you know, I've been surprised by many things. Really, this is a jam throughout with the title track being oddly satisfying.

Eddie Haze's guitar solo on the title track is the greatest recorded guitar performance of all time. It destroys me every time I hear it. The rest of this album has some of my favourite tracks by P-Funk. Fantastic album.

They really dropped the ball with Wars of Armageddon. I was about to give 4 stars until then.

I actually just discovered this album recently after writing off Funkadelic as the inferior group to Parliament for all these years. Holy shit, what an album. Worth it alone for Eddie Hazel's guitar playing, especially on the opening track. This might be my favorite "psychedelic" album of all time.

I gotta say, I listen to one nation under a groove, and gave it a three. It was OK, but I was not in the mood for this album, which I assumed would be basically the same thing. It’s funk, but it’s different. And I mean that in the best way. I really enjoyed this album. that title track is strong. The whole album is. It was really what I needed while I was working. And I mean working. Today is Project day around the house and I’m cleaning out the shed. This is some shed cleaning music! Fantastic!

Early on in my reviews, I got Parliament's Mothership Connection, and I loved it. A few weeks ago, I got Funkadelic's One Nation Under A Groove, and I didn't care for it much. I was really bummed that I didn't like ONUAG, because I knew that Maggot Brain had good reviews, and I was worried I wouldn't like it either. I'm delighted that those fears were dashed by the funky psychedelic sandwich that was Maggot Brain. The title track hooked my attention right away with its spoken word intro, and I loved the extended guitar solo that made up the rest of the song. But "Can You Get To That" absolutely blew my mind. In 2009, my brother got me a copy of MGMT's Oracular Spectacular and Vampire Weekend's self titled album. Those two albums completely changed the trajectory of the music that I listened to. In 2010, Sleigh Bell's Treats came out, and like a lot of people, I was fully on their hype train. When "Can You Get To That" kicked in, I froze. Did Sleigh Bells sample this for "Rill Rill," or was my brain just trying to connect to this album? As the song went on for a few more seconds, I realized that it had to have been sampled by Sleigh Bells, and I couldn't believe I was learning that fact almost 14 years after Treats' release. With music, I feel like I'm always chasing that high you feel when you hear a song for the first time and immediately fall in love with it. Hearing "Can You Get To That" was the closest I'll ever get to being able to hear "Rill Rill" again for the first time again, and it delighted me in a way that I don't think I can put into words. I literally teared up because I was so happy. Indie music in the early 2010's is so special to me because it's symbolic of the start of my "real adult life" after college, and it was great to have that connection with this album. Now that I've written a dissertation on my weepy sense of nostalgia, I'll try to be more succinct in discussing the rest of the album. I loved that this album had longer and more experimental songs to lead off and close the album. "Wars of Armageddon" was weird and dissonant at times, but I liked the sense of unease that it was able to build with its frantic pace and odd (see also: farting) sounds. The songs in the middle of this funky sandwich were fantastic too. The guitar arrangements were fantastic, the keyboards were groovy as hell, and the vocals rounded out the sound perfectly. Unlike One Nation Under A Groove, these songs made me want to dance. There was a really great bass and drum sound on "You and Your Folks, Me And My Folks" that I'm having a tough time describing; it sounds like an echo from those dollar store microphone toys, and I loved the way that it thumped along to the bright keyboard melody. This album was fantastic from start to finish. This is exactly what I wanted from Funkadelic, and then some. Not only was listening to this really enjoyable, it's a treat to listen to something that was so influential and groundbreaking.

Title track is epic, but the rest doesn't do much for me. Was thinking about a 3 until the fucking fart noises at the end. Definitely prefer Parliament

Whoa that’s one of the most incredible guitar solos I’ve ever heard. Tempted to give the entire album a 5 off its strength alone but not sure I’m quite that high on it. Still a strong product as a whole with a really tight band. Best song: Maggot Brain

Cool but kind of scary

Some bright bits but not my overall favourite.

A definite classic, and it holds up quite well to this day. The quality of the songs is a bit up and down, but it never dips below 'good' or 'very intriguing'

Not only does P-Funk put the funk in funk but he also puts the "fun" in funk. This album is a bit more on the weird and fringe side of things happening during the 60s, but the listener should allow themselves plenty of runway coming down from this listen. The album plays well but unlike some of the other offerings that Funkadelic (or Parliament+Funkadelic) would eventually put out, this one has a bit of ominousness to it that gives it a bitter palette. The funk and the fun are all there, but so is a little bit of weird, enough to throw it off balance a bit, and just enough to miss perfect.

Every 16 year old who has sat noodling on a guitar for hours at a time has, directly or not, been channeling the excellent title track to this excellent Funk album. I'd heard good things about the song years before ever actually checking it out, and when I first went to listen to the track itself I was trepidatious, but it really is that good. The rest of the album feels as if it should pale in comparison, but it holds it's own pretty well, managing to incoporate Funk, R&B and Hard Rock into an enjoyable and cathartic blend of protest music

I don’t see a damn thing wrong with this album and a whole lot right about it. Production brings out the incredible instrumentation and vocals the band lays down. The guitar on these tracks are so full of emotion. Vocals are infectious. Lyrics are often repeated for the effect of highlighting important lines, but it doesn’t feel forced. The album is sort of the result of a mad genius at work. There’s no doubt everyone on this project knows a hell of a lot about music and the fact that they all decided to go crazy gives it a passion that complements the intelligence very nicely. My personal opinion is this project is best enjoyed as a whole rather than listening to individual songs, but I would never mind throwing any of these tracks on at random. 5/5

Fart sounds?

Superb album front to back. Opens with an emotional guitar onslaught and the rest of the album is a funk throwdown. I've always loved 'Hit It and Quit It' and 'Can You Get to That'. 'Wars of Armageddon' is rocking groovy funked out closer. Love this album!

I feel like it would be wrong to rate it a 5 just on the incredible title track, which is so obviously a 5 that it doesn't even need saying, what an insane solo. But then again, everything else on here is super funky, easy to listen to, makes you want to dance around while listening. So I guess it is just a 5 after all.

Iconic. From the epic opening to the raw funk of wars of Armageddon, this album takes you on a journey. My only criticism is that it was only 37 mins long.

Fantastic album - filled with blues twangs and fantastic funk. So far ahead of its time.

The opener leaves me with the question why don´t switch directly to an Hendrix-album. The middle-section (tracks 2-6) is nice and groovy. The last song again quite weird... After the first look at the cover and some reviews I had high expectations on this album. Unfortunately they were not matched. Definitely not my every-day-choise. 2,5

Would have given this 100 stars if I could based on the title track alone. Maggot Brain (the title track) is a masterpiece of emotions. If you're not moved by it, you may be dead. The rest of the album is just some good funk/rock. Highly recommend this album to anyone. One of my favs.

Great funk album and musically they were really good at what they were doing, though I expected to like it more. It was perhaps a bit monotonous or perhaps a bit spontaneous? I don't know.

This album is awesome. Maggot Brain the song is a long trippy guitar solo that is just awesome. The second song may be my favorite when laid back guitar and drums turns into some cool 70s funk. I need a bigger car (like a Cadillac) when listening to this one.

I have never really liked funk. But for some reason, I always had a gut feeling that I would like this album. And I was wrong. I absolutely LOVED this album. This is just the right amount of funk without being annoying, but enough to still be funky as hell. The opening track was a huge surprise, I never expected a 10 minute long Pink Floyd type song on an album I always thought was pure funk. The rest of the album is dynamic, diverse, and remains interesting and keeps my attention all the way through. Absolutely phenomenal stuff, I'm so glad I finally got round to discovering this.

Well I’ve had an album by Parliament already, might as well have a Funkadelic album, too. This was such a different vibe. Really felt like a rock band doing funk at times, and then a funk band doing rock. Great instrumentation throughout, and some of the lower vocals were just so nice to listen to. Also, “Wars of Armageddon” is a political and social statement and I am 100% here for it. Wondering now if at some point I’ll get a Parliament-Funkadelic album. Really hoping I do. When other albums give you a side A of singles and a side B of weird, Funkadelic feeds you a singles sandwich on weird bread. The title track, a 10 minute wailing guitar dirge, and the final track, a 10 minute psychedelic second line freak out, are the weird bread that hold this meal together. The middle songs bring their own funky flavors, with "Can You Get To That" and "You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks" being my favorite cold cuts.

Too much noodling on most of these songs. When the first track is over 10 minutes long for no reason i'm already rolling my eyes. No denying great musicians etc but boring album.

Ein Lichtblick ist das Intro, Maggot Brain .. dann wirds dunkel und vergessbar.

Intro guitar solo is pretty good. Kinda odd for a funk album. "Can You Get To That" is sampled pretty heavily on the Sleigh Bells hit "Ring Ring". I enjoyed "Super Stupid". This album was a good middle ground for me. I think it has potential to grow on me.

Album 332 of 1001 Funkadelic - Maggot Brain Rating : 4 / 5 This has been a favorite for a few years now. Certainly bolstered by the awesome title track, but the whole album is a really good listen. My go-to for some awesome funk.

This album made me feel sad. I commend them for translating feelings to music but… ugh.

Did not realize how dreary a funk album can be, well I guess that’s the adelic part. I can’t say I enjoyed it, even the guitar solo which was done amazingly didn’t really have much to play off. The last song on the album, made me think I was going a little insane which I’m sure was intentional. Very creative and interesting just can’t say I enjoyed listing to it. The album cover matches the mood of the album and I thought was better than the music within.

Definitely funky. I like it. The use of random fart noises and other unusual sounds makes me reconsider my thought that anything can be used to create music.

Recording quality is great but too psychodelic, feel like I need to be on something to fully enjoy. Great technical achievement but not sold on the artistic side, some great tunes in the middle but the opening and especially the closing tracks are not my favorite.

George Clinton's opening lines on the title track here have always haunted me, in both their delivery and placement within this song. Without any context, Clinton gives you an ultimatum of sorts, either accept the filth exuded by humans or rise above it all and see through it. Clinton seems to take the latter route with Hazel's ascending piece of serene and minimalistic psychedelic guitar that goes through several different phases and facets. I don't understand "Maggot Brain", as a descriptor, song, or album (although it was supposedly the nickname of guitarist Eddie Hazel). This opening title track certainly stands out here because there's no other song like it on this album. "Can You Get to That" is an insanely catchy funk track. I love how deep the vocals get on the refrain (I assume Clinton's?). The drumming done by Tiki (who also plays them on the entire album) is superb here. "Hit It and Quit It" is equally as catchy and musically dense with more psychedelic elements mixed with typical funk organ and synth passages. I love the way the instrumentation builds and hits on the refrain to fill the sound. I don't think I can express enough how amazing the production is on this album. Entering the new decade, Funkadelic knows how to merge all the most impressive, forward-thinking sounds of the '60s and elevate them to another level. The instrumentation is so lush and just builds on so many of these tracks. "You and Your Folks..." with Billy Nelson on vocals and "Super Stupid" both show the album going in a more funk-rock direction when compared to the previous two songs. I love that subtle evolution this album has. I also love the slightly humorous, yet tragic tone the lyrics take on "Super Stupid" recounting a supposedly real story regarding Hazel's coke and heroin mixup. "Wars of Armageddon" has one of the most killer drum beats on this album, and eventually builds to this incredible groove. The organ and bass are complemented by what sounds like a diverse set of samples and eventually an incredible guitar passage. This is like an incredible plunderphonics track from the past and the mere fact that something this insanely hard, punchy, and chaotic exists in '71 is beyond me. I don't get this album. I don't know whether it takes itself seriously or not. There's always been a sort of mystique around this thing for me. It just sounds so far ahead in the future and so far above its time in so many ways it's surreal, and I love it for it. This album rests alone in a soundscape so far above and ahead of anything.

3.75 Stars. I've know this is very famous, and it took me a while to even approach this listen, as "Maggot Brain" requires a certain level of calm and focus to appreciate. I'm surprised this is their most popular song, as it's a very slow burn, atmospheric psychedelic rock track. The structure of this album is intriguing, as the book ends are really long, experimental songs that don't allow much for a passive listen. The tracks in between these, however, are really catchy, groovy and funky songs. It's nice to find where Sleigh Bells got the sample for their most popular song ("Can You Get to That" / "Rill Rill") While the album it's a casual listen as a whole, it is certainly an engaging one. Did not appreciate having fart sounds in my ears, though

Upon listening to this album a second time it definitely clicked a lot more than the first time I'd heard it. It's a pretty rocking album though it is a bit strange at times that makes it hard for me to rate it too highly.

This is one of my all-time favorite albums.

10/10, Usage of guitar was phenominal for its time the chord progression and the buildup in each track is iconic i could feel the artists hardwork and passion when making both the instrumentals and the vocals on this thing. Each track had a different feel that each gave importance to one another. The album cover although a bit sketchy to my eye, i believed the artist had compassion when putting through this album. I commend also Funkadelics who put up a masterpiece in guitar solos as it was made in the 1970's with barely almost to none technology was used and it was pure instruments

Loved this. Such a disparate mix that comes together to keep me listening, moving, smiling, and making worryingly guttural noises at some stages. If nothing else, the guitar on the title track is jaw-droppingly awesome.

Good Sunday morning funk. 1st song is 10 minutes of guitar solo. Last song is 10 minutes of experimental freestyle/weirdness with lots of drums and sound effects (lions, cows, aeroplanes and cuckoo clocks) Think I preferred the first half

More rock/funk. Starts out kind of slow, which I don't like in a funk record, and definitely is more in line with the weirder side of funk. Still cool, though. Very weird, especially at the end.

The first track is great but had me wondering if the digital files got mixed up with another album. The second track quickly verified it was correct.

Mixed bag here. I enjoyed the middle of the album more than expected--I've never really sought out funk music, but this was good. The first track was itself a mixed bag, and the last track decidedly did NOT work for me. Sometimes the experimental track on an album is transcendent, but sometimes it's just noise.

Funkadelic consistently out rock, out funk and out punk the competition and their innovative and unusual approach to songwriting makes this a unique and rightly celebrated album.

I’m tired of people thinking just because something is experimental it means that it’s good. You don’t get to put 9 minutes of disparate guitar sounds over empty noise and call it art. I know this because none of my dick head friends from high school ever went platinum. You could tell me a bulk of this album was the warmup they played before they recorded the actual album and I wouldn’t have blinked.

The title track is probably the best funk/rock instrumental ever, and then there’s some other songs which range from fine to solid. I feel like Funkadelic were at a point in their career similar to Black Sabbath at Paranoid: coming from psychedelic/blues roots, this was the album where they really began to develop their sound that made them famous. Oddly enough though, I felt like Parliament releases contain their funkier side where Funkadelic releases are more experimental rock. Definitely not my favorite Funkadelic/Parliament/George Clinton/Bootsy Collins/etc. album, there’s a handful of Parliament albums I prefer along with One Nation Under a Groove (which contains a bonus EP with a live version of “Maggot Brain”). A lot of Maggot Brain feels like a fusion of James Brown and Jimi Hendrix, with a little Miles Davis thrown in. Further on in Parliament/Funkadelic’s career, I don’t think I can rightfully compare them to anyone; they’re the ones who get imitated, not the other way around.

funky and good little too artsy around the edges

Good liked the last song, kinda like a Can album but American Aoife: I like how it opens like a slow dance. The guitar is incredible, which isn't something I normally vibe with, but they did a good job of making it feel like it's boring holes through my brain. The vocals/lyrics are kinda just 70s funk, kinda generic. I prefer the instrumental tracks by a mile. Woah, the bells moving through your ear canals feels wild. The album art is brilliant, feels like it would still be cool today. The way it's lit really makes it stand out.

This album had moments of perfection and moments of weird chaos. I think it all worked as a cohesive whole although I struggled a bit with the final track sound effects which were rather… juvenile. Opening track "Maggot Brain" is a sonic mélange of funky riffs, searing, shrill solos, overlaid on a soft, gentle piano riff. It is one of the more interesting intro tracks on an album, given the musical composition and also the ten-minute-plus runtime. The second track, "Can You Get To That" is an almost-perfect counterpoint to "Maggot Brain," with its deep, slow, grooving riffs and basslines, with harmonizing vocals and the general freneticism of a party about to explode. The remaining tracks on the album are more in the vein of 'Funk' rather than 'Experimental Funk,' yet those experimental elements persist throughout the album, especially in the percussion. Except the final track on the initial release, "Wars of Armageddon," which bookends the opening track with a funky, driving medley of madness, hypnotic in its frenzied menagerie of sounds. The final taste of a guitar lick in the waning seconds sounds, in a way, like a requiem. The death of what, specifically, is unknown to me. Perhaps the waning of a charged decade that fomented, above all, change. Staring into the unknown future as the music fades.

I have listened to this album before and honestly I thought I liked it more than I did this time. Some good guitar playing sure but goes on too long for my tastes.

It also has a fairly epic ending with a coo-coo clock, fart noises, and a nuclear explosion. It's all nicely funky, though, and that's what holds it together.

That one I come back to from time to time. I love the varied styles of each track, start with a 10 minute progressive guitar solo and switch to funk and melodic tunes in the next tracks.

I had veeeeery low hopes for this, given the name of the artist and the album and also the person speaking in the beginning of the first album haha HOWEVER... the beautiful guitar work in the first song really got me intrigued. It kind of had a slightly more expanded Jimmy Hendrix sound to it. The second song was nice but then the rest were a bit too much :D too many instruments playing over there, it was a bit overwhelming, and also the last 3 songs weren't available for my region on Spotify, so I had to look them on Youtube. Things started off well but, as the name suggests, this is more for whenever you are on drugs and want to have something to make things worse in the background. On top of everything, the Wars of Armageddon song had farts and toilet flushing sounds, which was too much, alongside the too many instruments playing at the same time. The last three tracks that were unavailable for me on Spotify are actually Bonus Tracks to the album, and they were actually very nice and normal, so that's great.

Not for me. It wasn't bad and I like the first track, but I found the rest of the album to drag. The songs were all pretty long and some of them felt repetitive.

I found the first track to be quite annoying. The guitar went on and on like a demo or jam session which I wanted to skip numerous times but my hands were wet from doing dishes. If I didn’t have filthy pots I would have skipped it. A lot of the albums rhythm section is monotonous to the point it sounds looped and uninspired. It gave me “monkey smashing symbol” anger. I don’t think the album has aged well.

Glad I get to listen to this one. I don't think I've ever intentionally heard the whole thing. I remember checking out a Parliament CD from the library when I was in college but Funkadelic, as far as I know, is its own thing. I know a couple tracks here but looking forward to hearing the whole thing. This was a really fun listen. I really liked the five sub-four-minute songs between the two jams. Feels like you can hear a lot of what was to come in rock music, especially in those five songs.

I like hw the shorter songs are sandwiched by the jams. I imagine those live went on for a good deal. I had heard a few of these before (Audioslave had covered "Super Stupid" live and I heard it on a bootleg, and "Can You Get To That" has been on commercials. Weird.) Bernie Worrell and George Clinton? I'm sold. Sure the songs range all over the place, but that's what makes it great, it's wide appeal. There's something for everyone here. This is already a 4, and with repeated listens may become a 5...

The title track is incredible. I only discovered it in the last year or so and I marvel at it every time - Eddie Hazel's guitar is just pouring out sorrow. Wow. The rest of the album is solid but not as good as that. Wars of Armageddon is another epic but it feels more spastic or less cohesive. Can You Get to That has a nice opening guitar lick and it's a solid song overall though the vocals don't hold up as well as the rest. Hit It and Quit It is funky and probably my third favorite on the album after Super Stupid, which has better vocals and lyrics and some more wicked guitar playing. I want to give it a 5 for how good Maggot Brain (the song) is but it's not close enough to perfect.

Begins and ends weird (first moments of Maggot Brain and most of Wars of Armaggedon, respectively), but most everything in between is awesome. The guitar solo in Maggot Brain is amazing. Apparently, George Clinton told the guitarist to play like his mother just died - I believe it. Can You Get to That is cool chill funk and then they turn up the dial...Hit It and Quit It is awesome funk, You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks is a very cool track, and then Super Stupid just plain rocks (my favorite on the album). Back in Our Minds sounds like drunk funk, but it's super catchy. But then Wars of Armageddon is seriously out there (screaming baby and what sounds like Cartman screaming "goddammit!", random mooing and screaming, and what sounds like a pretty terrible case of diarrhea), plus it goes on about twice as long as it should. That said, it still has some catchy funk and the band is on fire (particularly the drums). Unfortunately, I think Wars of Armageddon brings the album down to a 4. I was tempted to round up to a 5 because the rest of the album is awesome, but that final track is just way too out there and way too long.

it's pretentious and incredibly extra, but seeing what they've pulled off here in the context of 1971 it sure is very impressive. I enjoy it somewhat, but every so often the excessiveness of some musical phrases and sounds takes me completely out of the zone. Maybe it's just my untrained ears not appreciating what they're hearing, but for me, for right now, all of this is just WAY too much.

As the name suggests, Funkadelic is funk on some crazy psychedelics. The wild guitar sounds, cowbell, screams, funk - this is a highly unusual yet extremely funky album. Can you get to that?

A fun listen. But I kept waiting for it to kick into high gear. But overall a very strong groove. More instrumental then I expected. I think Hit It and Quit It, was my favorite song.
