That was almost too good to be believed.
I hit it, but I could not quit it. Two plus listens, and I want more. They bring the psychedelic, then the funk, and then the psychedelic again - and it’s brilliant!
Funky, trippy, cool from start to finish.
Good stuff! I've seen this album listed on a LOT of artist's "influential albums" lists. I think this is the first time I've gotten around to listening to it, though. The variety is the standout for me. Not one of those albums where all the songs sound similar. Title track is some pretty damn amazing guitar, too. Could see this one getting ranked higher with additional listenings.

Want to listen again but this is great - heavier and more rocky than I'd expected. Title track is obviously phenomenal. Quite a unique structure of starting and ending with long tracks and having short punchy ones in between.

Absolutely essential. Guitar solos both weeping and blistering. Folk jams, funk jams, farts. A little bit of something for everybody here. 9.5/10
'Maggot Brain', the song, is amazing and an absolute masterpiece. The album is not worth 5 stars (that voice?), but it's close.

Discazo, lo re disfrute. Todas las canciones tienen mucho groove. No sé cómo, pero logran que siempre quiera moverme a la par del ritmo. Y en general suenan súper bien juntos, muy integrados cada uno por su parte. Hay dos cosas que no me convencieron: la calidad del sonido (que bueno igual por la época no tengo de qué quejarme) y que siento que todos los temas están muy cargados de cosas. Ya me pasó con otro album, uno de Stevie que no recuerdo el nombre. Pero personalmente siento que esa como pared sonora es demasiado y a veces me agobia. Pero en general fue muy bueno y lo disfrute. Tengo que escuchar más suyo. 7/10
Couldn't get through it. Have up after a few songs.
Starting this project on a whim, how long will I stick with it? First time intentionally listening to Funkadelic without Parliament. Not what I expected but cool. Oh yeah, I do know "Can You Get To That" and not only bc of the Sleigh Bells song that samples it. Groovy lol Other than that and maybe one other track, this is an album I probably won't come back to.
Opening track is awesome!
Decent, but doesn't really stand out with anything in particular.
An attractive, interesting album with a great start and good finish. Throughout it, there's plenty of attractive riffs, and it's easy to listen. However, given the length of the beginning and the end, the album feels ultimately short, and it feels like it's just a tiny bit from sticking the landing. As you consider whether you like the middle part, it's over, and as an effect it is not half as memorable as the start of the album. Very solid 4/5, and maybe a pretty hesitant 5.
I knew about this album but had never listened to anything more than the title track. Loved it. Every second. Yes, even the one with the fart sounds. It was just a great album all around and at 36 minutes it never feels like it overstays its welcome even with two songs at about 10 minutes a piece.

What do you get when you cross James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and Miles Davis? I present to you, Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain".
Starts off sounding promising with the strange spoken word bit at the beginning, followed by that great long instrumental opener. But I wasn’t into much of the album after that first 10 minutes. The final track sounds like they’d just bought a sound effects pack and had to try all the clips out.
Showed promise at the beginning but devolved into a bit of a jam session later on.
Wow, Wars of Armageddon is an incredibly annoying piece of cacophony. Other than that, it's grand, but not necessarily something I'll come back to very often.

With a title like Maggot Brain I thought this would be dumb but wow this was fantastic. Huge influences on fantastic bands. Would be great live.

Day 0002/1001 of One Album a Day Was not moved by the opening track unfortunately. Maybe if I was either tripping or played the guitar (or both) I would have appreciated it more. Apparently its one of the greatest bits of guitar work of all time so a shame to not have enjoyed it. The rest of the album was great however, phenomenal production quality and some very catchy guitar riffs and drumming and whatnot. One of my favorite songs/guitar playing of all time on the title track. Incredible stuff. Can you get to that and hit it and quit it are also awesome. War of armaggedon is too much, I don't know what's going on there and it's a little too weird for me even though I love funkadelic. Almost a 5 if not for the 10 minute closing track with fart noises

I'd seen this album cover crop up a lot, so I'm glad to have finally given it a listen. I think this is broadly pretty good. It's quite funky, with some driving beats and uplifting moments. 3.5 rounded down.
Not enough drugs in the world...
So yes, there is one song on this album that is vaguely familiar. But does that song really hold so much weight that album is worth listening to? No. This was mediocre at best. Didn’t hate it enough to give it a 1. So it will get a 2 for not resonating with me at all. Which is almost worse than a 1. At least a 1 can produce negative feelings from me.
Pretty interesting compared to their later work. A lot more guitar than I expected. Pretty cool.
I feel like this album is a little - a smidgen - overrated. Based off? The fact that I own a copy and don't listen all that much. That's my entire evidential basis. For what it's worth, I still consider it a 'high end of four stars' album, but if I want to truly enjoy a George Clinton creation, it's a Parliament platter every time.
I love rock albums that start slowly, quietly and strangely, and it doesn't get any slower, quieter (initially at least) and strangely than the title track of this album. Eddie Hazel's guitar on this track is worth a close listen - at least as close as George Clinton's interstellar mixing permits - a real musical masterpiece. This album has its shortcomings but the other thing I love about it is the social consciousness. What's Going On came out roughly at the same time, and songs like You and your folks, me and my folks make Marvin Gaye sound like a social tourist.
It's so impressive how different this Funkadelic album is from the other one in this collection ("One Nation Under A Groove"), or from the lone Parliament album too. I can definitely see why people have raved about Eddie Hazel's epic solo in the title track; I don't think I've ever heard his work before, and this is quite showcase for his endless riff. There are shades of Hendrix and also Jeff Beck in "Maggot brain", but nothing derivative, and a pleasure to listen to (especially with headphones). The rest of the album is somewhat more traditionally George Clinton oriented, albeit a lot darker than a lot of other George Clinton albums have been, and more rock-oriented too than other albums (I don't think I would have known "Super stupid" was by Funkadelic if it came on the radio). Despite the shadows, though, it's largely entertaining (although disappointing that "Wars of armageddon" wasn't an adequate bookend to the title track), and fun too to get Hot Buttered Soul providing backing vocals on "Can you get to that".
Holy F S--mind blown. I'm only two songs in and I'm completely in love with what I've heard so far. Awesomely dated and also just awesome. TIL the power of album covers--I'd always hated that cover and never listened. The only inferior track is Wars of Armageddon, but my favorites are Maggot Brain and Super Stupid.
Last song goes a bit off the rails but great album!
The first half of this album is impeccable, and the second half ain't too bad either. The title/opening track is killer, despite consisting essentially of an extended guitar solo with a two-chord muted bass arpeggio underneath. It's soulful, full of expression, and it sounds great. Any ten-plus-minute song that keeps you mesmerised the entire time is impressive in its own right, and the fact that it makes up almost a third of this album has to be acknowledged. (The first third of a (relatively) mainstream album being flawless psychedelic guitar noodling? Insanity!) The album closer, Wars Of Armageddon, is essentially a brasher and more texturally crowded version of the first track. The remaining five songs are chock-full of harmonised 60s-esque vocals, a solid funk rhythm section (including some great basslines), and elements of rock and jazz. In this middle part of the album, the atmosphere is almost party-esque, particularly in the songs Can You Get To That and Hit It and Quit It. Although I found that some of the later tracks were compositionally and tonally weaker than the opening trio, it's pretty dang tough to keep up that quality. And I daresay that this album would not have its legendary status without the mixture of "hook" tracks and "boys, do whatever you want" tracks. These guys are jamming, and you've got to hand it to them: they really pull it off. Note: Listen to this with headphones. I love this album, but I always wished it was longer. Can You Get To That is an all-time favorite song. Maggot Brain and Wars of Armageddon are both great songs, but since they are more like jams or solo-driven songs, they just don’t carry the same weight as the other songs, they aren’t songs I would typically put on alone. Take away those two tracks and you’re left with five remaining, just too short. Still love it though!

Fun little groovy album.
If there's one thing this album is, it is completely ITSELF. George Clinton was not afraid to make the album that HE wanted, not what he thought would sell the best or be the easiest to listen to. He was lashing out, in his own unique way. A 10-minute electric guitar solo to start the album, and a 10-minute chaotic jam to end it, with five slabs of funk perfection sandwiched in between, is not everyone's cup of tea. Although Eddie Hazel's (mostly) unaccompanied guitar heroics in the opening track are stellar, it's not the kind of track you want to put on repeat. Those middle 5 songs, though... damn!
I dislike this for the same reason I dislike The Doors...masturbatory solos that go on forever. I actually got a little angry listening to this, but maybe I just woke up on the wrong side of bed. Looking at the other ratings I'm way outside the norm on this. So be it

I've seen this album cover around and always imagined it would sound like Wu-Tang Clan or a funkier Beastie Boys. I was not expecting the psychedelic blues metl your face guitar solo to start off. I love the first track, I am a sucker for Clapton type guitar wails, and this had it. I think the tracks on the interior of this album are all very solid with a nice variety of styles and sounds. The closing track strays towards noise rock but stays firmly psychedelic and interesting. I was prepared for this to be a classic and it met my expectations. Super out there and the checks that it writes are cashed. I'll need to listen to this more before I really get a sense for it. This album took what Hendrix and co were doing and fused it with modern urban RnB and funk and made something boundary pushing that to my ear has really stood the test of time. Nice Job Mr. Funkadelic.
Fucking hell, the title track is so sick lol.
Not what I expected out of a Funkadelic album but I guess this is before the “Parliament” bit. This is still pretty funky but it’s a rock album for sure rather than a funk one. The ten minute opener is good for your joint and realizing you’re stoned before getting in to the rest of it. It’s a good solo, not the best, but I did like it. Like a less impressive Jimi. Out of the more traditional songs I liked “hit and quit it” and “super stupid” the most. The first is more of the funkadelic that I know of and the second really comes in to itself toward the end as an excellent 70s rock jam. Could really do without the second half of the last track. I feel like I wasn’t fucked up enough to appreciate it.

I mean, it's fucking Maggot Brain. A drug induced whirlwind of absurdly tight playing and some of the most absorbing soundscapes you'll ever hear. The way this group uses the inherent fun and groove of funk to underscore the cutting, biting anger present in this record is both unnerving and cathartic.
Fuck yea. Funkadelic is great and Maggot Brain is an all time psychedelic-funk adventure. The title track is effectively a 10 minute free-form guitar solo built on top of a clean back and forth guitar progression. Mixing on it reminds of early Sabbath in the way that there is a ton of dusty depth to it, while the guitar work calls to Hendrix in its delicious use of fuzz. If this were another 10 minutes I wouldn't complain -- the guitar work is so passionate and lyrical it gets me every time. Quick pivot into structured funk with Can You Get To That. Such a great goddamned song. Love the vocal harmonization and layering through the chorus. Hit It and Quit It is also one of my favorites here -- opens on a single groovy guitar riff that the whole band wraps around. Makes for an incredibly catchy and jumping number on which the organ gets room to explore in a solid solo. Super Stupid almost could be mistaken for a Lenny Kravits song in its structure. Fun little bopper that is almost completely propelled by the guitar work. But as with most songs on here, its the tightness of the whole package that makes this great -- the drums are satisfying, bass and organs play solid support, and the vocals are powerful. Interesting that this album has at least 5 different lead/co-lead vocalists across 7 tracks. If a song dedicated to hitting and quitting wasn't enough indication that Funkadelic didn't take themselves too seriously, Wars Of Armageddon removes all doubt. This sprawling jammy outro is a foil to the passionate, serious tone that Maggot Brain set. I don't think that "dancey" is quite the right way to characterize this, but it certainly evokes motion. Similar to the title track this is a free form jam over which Hazel solos come in and out of focus along with incoherent babble, fart sounds, and other various elements. End result is a damn good time. I love this album more every time I listen to it. While it is certainly a bit chaotic, I think that is part of the point. Funkadelic shows they can transcend the space of pschedelia and funk while still churning out some tunes that could have pop appeal and garner radio play. George Clinton is the man, but Eddie Hazel burns this one down. 5 / 5
Another good funk album. Comparing it to Superfly and 3 + 3 as those are all very recent. I like that they all had distinctly different styles. This one was definitely a lot jammier which lead to being more of a background noise album, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. No real standouts, but very solid stuff.
I said it before on their last album for some reason, but I will say it again Maggot Brain SHREDS! I think this album was slower than their other one if I can remember correctly but it was still pretty awesome. Can't really remember individual songs but ah who cares the whole album was put together very nicely. Here for the funk fo sho
Title track absolutely SLAPS. John Frusciante's song Before the Beginning is a direct take on this and I love it. Some serious emotion behind that guitar. What a psychedelic ROMP that was. Pretty much every song had a serious groove to it with different instruments sticking out on each. I was bumping along to the whole thing. Idk if I've ever done two 5's in a row but today is the day! Go music!

Me estaba gustando y pensaba ponerle 4 estrellas, pero luego llegó el track final experimental de 10 minutos en donde escuchamos muchos ruidos, entre ellos mugidos y pedos, y pues nadie quiere escuchar pedos. Así que le bajo una estrella, por pesaos.

Oh man, this hit the spot on a cloudy Monday. This is my second Funkadelic album, and my third George Clinton album. All of them are 5 stars albums. My younger self was missing out big time. This one in particular starts off so strong, Brain Maggot's shredding guitar pulls you in, and then they hit you with Can You Get To That. It's not the most cohesive album I've ever heard but it all the tracks are great.
This was an unexpected treat. Definitely more of a rock album than a funk album, but that first track is incredible. It spins a little out of control towards the end, but I am here for it.
Fine P-funk stripped of its ridiculousness and gimmicks.
Really cool album. Never heard them before but it was great to hear the song Maggot Brain as it is the song which inspired John Frusciante's Before The Beginning.
Not funky enough
This album was pretty fun! I am not sure how often I will return to it, but it was a good time! The solo song of "Maggot Brain" was fun, although it did go a little long in my opinion. However, what the fuck was "Wars of Armageddon"....the burping throughout it was so weird. Overall though, I did enjoy most of this album. Probably more of a 3.5 Liked songs: "Can You Get To That" , "Hit It and Quit It" , "You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks" , "Super Stupid"

Pre-listening thoughts: my brain feels like maggots rn Post/during listening thoughts: not the opening song being nine minutes… I was sorely mistaken expecting just a funk album I suppose. Sue me for seeing the name Funkadelic and expecting funk. Instead it’s a psychedelic rock fusion album. I think I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did. The genre blend just isn’t quite working for me today because I really did just want a pure funk album sorry 😭. It’s really unique and I’ll give it credit and maybe on another day I’d enjoy this more. But today I’m kinda meh on it. 5.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: I dont think so? This album has a real 2112 thing about it. Which, what I mean by that is that while the whole package is a great, 5/5 time, it's kinda hard for me to not place all my focus on the title track. "2112" and "Maggot Brain" are both the first tracks on and centerpieces of their respective albums; are both one of, if not **the** most famous things these groups ever did; and are, in their own ways, absolute tour de forces. In the presence of these songs, the others just can't help but fall under the "and also" category. Like, "Maggot Brain" is just... Soul-rending. The most emotional guitar solo I've ever heard since Frank Zappa's "Watermelon In Easter Hay". Even if you don't know the famous story where Eddie Hazel was told to play like he was just told his mom had died, you can still feel what this song is about in every note, tone, flange and wah. It sounds like the world's ending. Seriously, if this song caught me at just the right or wrong time... As for the rest of the album... Well, I'm not sure if it's as consistently strong as 2112's "rest of the album," but all the same, there's nothing here that'd make me dock the album a point. Not even "Wars Of Armageddon" and the actual fart sound effects it has over halfway through. The grooves and guitar playing are just that strong throughout. Especially "Super Stupid", which I'm picking as my "deep cut favorite." Pitchfork's absolutely right in their analysis; it really **does** sound like a tune Black Sabbath would be proud of. And with this kind of guitar playing, too — oof, my goodness. It's absolutely the hardest yet I've ever heard Funkadelic go. And, like, I kind of don't like to place so much focus on the guitar playing over everything else. The vocals, the lyrics, the grooves — y'know, all the other members of the band... They're all doing great work, too; I don't wanna undersell them. But, knowing about how George Clinton deliberately de-emphasized the other members on "Maggot Brain"... Like, they're there, and they're important to keeping the beat and melody. Eddie Hazel's guitar playing would be incredible even if it was just screaming all by itself, completely freeform. With that steady beat and melody underneath it, though... Well, it's just even better. But again: the other members were deliberately de-emphasized on that song. And it can be hard for me to not apply that to the rest of the album. But regardless, MAGGOT BRAIN as a complete package is a 5. The title track alone grants it that, and thankfully the rest of the album supports that. Y'know, I'm just thinking back to the first review I ever did with my group, which was also of a Funkadelic album, ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE. Even as far back as that album, I was praising MAGGOT BRAIN's title track... And it's also really a contrast in how I've grown in regards to talking about music. That review was only just one above 30 words, versus here, where I'm already at 524. And in under 11 months, too — goodness. I'll say as well, I think I like this album better than ONE NATION. ONE NATION was more about, well, the grooves and vibes, whereas this had more focused songs. I can dig a good vibe, but at the same time, hey, y'know, gimme some good focus So, yeah, as a homecoming to the group where this whole journey started for me... Well, I don't think there woulda been any other options, but regardless, I'm happy it's with an album as great as this one. Big R.I.P. to Eddie Hazel: April 10, 1950 to December 23, 1992.

I’m at a 5. Well, that felt a lot less like Funkadelic and more like… I dunno, Led Zeppelin meets Hendrix meets Eno, or something like that. That was an eclectic blend of every type of rock & ambience & funk there was. I've seen the album cover plenty of times, but I've never heard anything from this album. I enjoyed all 37 minutes of that, save for a few minor things: the mix in Hit It and Quit It wasn’t as friendly as the rest of the album felt, Back in Our Minds felt a little too short and perhaps a little empty, and Wars of Armageddon goes on just a little too long – could’ve trimmed down some of those final 2 minutes where it started to feel endless and directionless at the same time. Regardless of any minor complaints I have, this is just good fucking music. It’s not as funky as some of their other stuff, and I think my ear is still slightly more attuned to the Parliament side of the George Clinton coin, but… damn, this stands up pretty well to a lot of its rock contemporaries of the time. The guitar solo on Super Stupid blew me away, and I think everyone deserves to hear that at least once. There’s smaller moments like that throughout the album, where the soundscape just overwhelms in the same hypnotic way that “One Nation Under A Groove” did some 326 days ago, but with a higher success rate; sometimes, that album knocked me out of the zone, but I was in it for almost the entire way through here. I really liked this, and it’s a pretty easy 5.
Much more rock oriented than I was expecting. Very Hendrixesque. First song is incredible. Also Rill Rill sample! Pretty good but lots of the middle got lost in the shuffle.

This album has a lot more than just funk, despite the name of the artist. A phenomenal listen with impressive instrumentals, especially the guitar.
5/10…funkadelic soul
I can see why this was very influential at the time, very experimental. But most of it sounds very repetitive to me.
1. 3/5 Chill, veel gitaar goede intro maar moet erbij neerzitten niet voor op playlist wanneer je willekeurig liedjs speelt. Panning links guitar rechts is heel cool. Van deze intro lijkt het of het een art album zal zijn. Zeer mooie intro. 2. 3.5/5 Mooie groove, mooie bas, wel raar met de harmonieën maar maakt het net goed. Absolutely not what I was expecting in a fantastic way. The first track was perfect - it's like Hendrix and Zeppelin and Pink Floyd all got together and made a song. "I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe. I was not offended, for I knew I had to rise above it all, or drown in my own shit" is just *chef's kiss*.

Agh! This album was INCREDIBLE. Do you ever get the feeling, listening to a record, of… delight and sadness at the same time? Delight, in discovering yet another sweet, wonderful new flavor. An album that proposes a whole new genre, a new way of thinking of music. And sadness when you realize, as the album nears its end… this is all you’re probably gonna get! The feeling that, with 20 minutes remaining, we’re probably never gonna get a record that sounds quite like this, works in the same way this one does. You could search far and wide for influences, contemporaries, b-sides. But… this really is it, isn’t it? Nothing’s gonna sound like these 40 minutes. That’s how I felt with Maggot Brain. I don’t have to have a doctorate in this blend of funk/soul/psychedelic music to know that this is one of a kind. Creatively explosive, high energy, yet strangely paced. Experimental but lovably homey. You get the sense that all the backup singers are cousins of cousins, and they’re all having a blast doing this. No idea censored. Just feels un-replicable. Shades of Hendrix, of course, maybe (later) de la soul? And that guy who did “it’s a family affair” and did all the vocals lying down in bed. Too lazy to look up his name. But… way more fun! That perfect blend of weird, experimental, funny, and somehow kind of important! I would give this record as homework to anyone trying to understand everything from soul to funk to the encouraged weirdness of the early 70’s, all the way up to Bootsy Collins and Thundercat and Kendrick Lamar. It’s all there! What a fucking cool, cool record. 5/5

This album is phenomenal from front to back. The song Maggot Brain itself is a perfect song and intro to the album, taking you through a well sequenced rest of the project ending in another experimental and instrumental track. 5/5
The way this fantastic funk album ends with a chorus of flatulence has got me at a loss for words. Truly iconic. Sub 1 hour total ripper of an album.

First time listen for me. I like Funkadelic, but man, 10 min of guitar noodling on the opening track was a weird choice. The quality of the rest of the album didn't make up for having to endure that, in my book.
This is #day92 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... I finally get to dive into the album I've known for its enigmatic, eye-catching cover, but never actually listened to. Well, now I have, and? The title track is an absolute revelation. It's one of the most mind-blowing pieces of music I've ever heard. Actually, “mind-blowing” might be too strong a word; it's more like a sonic avalanche, crashing on you from a distance, in slow motion. As if Have A Nice Life resurrected Jimi Hendrix and decided to record a soundtrack for the apocalypse. This track alone justifies the album's "must-listen" status. As for the rest of the record, it's funky, psychedelic, and undeniably acidic. Other standout tracks include "Hit It And Quit It" and "Wars of Armageddon." On the other hand, "Can You Get To That" and "Back In Our Minds" feel a bit more drawn out and less engaging. I'm giving it a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day93.

That was much better than what I expected. I expected it to be good but it was great.
Another pleasant surprise! I was expecting over the top kitsch funk, which I associate with later Parliament Funkadelic stuff. However, this album is a much more eclectic mix witch echoes of Jimi Hendrix (lots), Led Zeppelin, and the use of sounds à la Pink Floyd. It all works together really well. I'd give it a 3 because it's not something I'd play often, but it gets an extra point for creativity and musicianship.
So I haven't ever listened to this album but I know of its fame and how it probably is one of the best album covers, but we'll see how this funk and soul album goes. Maggot Brain Super Stupid Super groovy, funk ya!!

Great fusion of funk and rock. "Maggot Brain" remains one of the greatest guitar tracks of all time and the rest of the album is strong too. "Super Stupid" reminded me of "Voodoo Child" and the Hendrix influence makes a lot of sense.

The middle of this album is merely, for good or ill, very good funk. But those framing tracks? Genuinely transcendent, the opener is one of my favourite guitar tracks basically ever.
Wasn’t so keen on the title track but I liked some of these songs. Some are reminiscent of early Talking Heads.
Undeniably funky, but very all over the place tonally - loved the title track, but the rest just feels a bit rough and unfinished in places. Can You Get To That has some great vocal work too, but it all just felt a bit... There? Nothing too amazing, sorry Funkadelic but I don't tee hink I'll be back to this one.

This is really good music and for me it's very situational a to when id like to listen to it. The song Maggot Brain has parts that sounded like Pink Floyd, specifically Wish You Were Here (which came 4 years later).
A bit underwhelming. Some funky rhythms here and there but never really got into it. It’s funny, I see this album art in lots of places but yeah didn’t live up to the hype
10 minute instrumental track to start? let's see if this is a vibe. It's okay, just a little boring? Good for easy listening. Second track is good. Third and fourth pretty good too. Back In Our Minds sounds like wine glasses. Final track a bit of an ear-sore, guess that's part of the funk genre? Didn't realise this was Jimi Hendrix, and that he founded Electric Lady Studios. I like the album cover.

And with this, the "listening to the Parliament-Funkadelic albums on the album list" chapter of my life has come to a close. I started with Funkadelic's One Nation Under a Groove way back in January, then listened to Parliament's Mothership Connection in June. Now, I'm going back to Funkadelic for their acclaimed 1971 album, Maggot Brain. I've gotta say, this is my favorite of the three albums. On first listen, I was kind of thrown for a loop. This album isn't really a traditional funk album. There's a much stronger psychedelic influence on here, with the tone even being somewhat somber at times. But you know what? Once I knew what the album was going for, I went back to some of the earlier songs and it clicked for me. This album's amazing. The sound is excellent. As stated earlier, there is a significant psychedelic sound, especially in the album's earlier songs. Of course, there are still funk elements. Songs like "Hit It and Quit It" and "Super Stupid" definitely feel like funk. And yet, there's still something special there that makes the sound stand out. The instrumentation is just phenomenal. The highlight for me is Eddie Hazel's guitar work. It's great all throughout, but it peaks with the guitar solo at the beginning of the album. I can see why people have called it one of the best guitar solos ever, because it probably is. And I've listened to the one from Megadeth's "Tornado of Souls," so that's saying something. The writing is pretty good, as is the singing. The general tone is all over the place in the best way. This might be one of the most unique, inspired albums I've heard. It's great. Light 5/5.

This album is a classic must-listen and a few tracks get repeat play at my place. It's a great fusion of rock, funk, soul, and psychedelics. It pushes genres about as far as they can go. I've seen them live several times (w/ G. Clinton and Parliament of course) and the live shows are absolutely mind blowing but I did miss the P-Funk combo so knocking it down a smidge. They're stronger together so 3.85.
We all know George is a funky dude and this album brings some old school to the turn-table. The tunes are pretty good for background but I can't stay I grooved that much. The guitar jams are not that engaging. Final track was best but long. The album cover shows is best thing about the album and shows up as an icon of the era consistently. Overall not a bad listen but I look forward to some later George with the Parliament to make the list...2.
Pretty slick entry. Maybe not the best album but I can appreciate the long jams that bookend a pretty fun 35 minute album. Hard not to get behind a band called Funkadelic that seems to just want to get together and have fun making music. Love seeing Bernie Worrell of Talking Heads (and elsewhere) pop up as a band member. 2.89 stars

There are some stellar tracks on here, like the title track and the fart noise song. Not every track on here is as consistent or memorable. Still a great Funk classic.

Looks and album titles can be deceptive. As illustrated here. One look at this album and I wasn’t looking forward to it. But what a great guitar solo to start it all off. Not what I’d expect on a funk album and it wouldn’t have sounded out of place on one or two of my prized harder sounding prog rock albums. Well produced sound as well. Guitar echos bouncing from my speakers to every corner of my lounge. This was 10 in the morning so what it’ll sound like at night after a few beers?? That first track was perhaps the highlight (so much so that I bookmarked it as a favourite) as it soon reverted to what I expected and a funk sound which does not do it for me. But then Super Stupid came along and I could have been listening to Hendrix. Wiki dares to state that at times tracks on the album bettered Hendrix. Wouldn’t go that far but a great effort as regards that one track. The long last track, Wars of Armageddon I was expecting another great guitar solo but it turned out to be an overlong jam. But that great first track really made this album and worth the entrance price alone. Cover art was intriguing. Was that a head of someone buried whose brain had been infested with maggots or just a carelessly discarded head? Either way not worth pondering too long at 10am. 3/5 18/10/24

You know what, my expectations were genuinely on the floor when I saw a nine minute track titled Maggot Brain up first. I wanted to hate it and give it 1/5; but, and I can’t pinpoint when, I actually started to really enjoy it
I have been aware of funkadelic because I am a fan on Parliament but I have not actually heard this album before. As a sort of forerunner to Parliament this was a lot rockier than I expected. The title track is superb and something I could quite easily imagine someone like Gary Moore playing. Although not exactly what I was expecting it was a very good album and definitely something I would consider buying i don't think it warrants a 5, but is definitely worth a solid 4.

Getting an album you know and love is like a little Christmas Day treat. It’s a bit out there, but in the best possible way. I loved it and would always return to this album.

This album has one of THE classic guitar solos in the title track. Hit and Quit It and Can You Get To That are also solid 5s, can't keep from bouncing in my seat while listening. I used to dislike the other four songs, but they've grown on me in recent years and with repeated listens. Either way, Maggot Brain on its own gets this album a 5

Phenomenal album which manages to alchemise an entire spectrum of genres without ever failing to be anything but a cohesive statement. Clinton is an absolute powerhouse at the mixing desk, and a visionary to boot. Everything from funk and blues to heavy metal sounds totally original under his aegis. The band’s name tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the sound (with emphasis on the “-elic”), and in the process you get a totally unique (and often uneasy) fusion record that hasn’t aged a millisecond. Completely undercut the stereotypical boxes black groups were supposed to be ticking. Love, love, love.
Love this album. The title track alone is worth a five star. Great guitarist, great funk great rock. Plus the album cover is just so iconic.

The opener is a real masterpiece, but the rest of this album is great. A little dated since everything's been plumbed a million times, and a little dated since some of the sounds are just so associated with the time, but still packed to the gills with good stuff. I think it's a victim of that datedness, so it \"only\" gets a four.
The maggot brain guitar solo is one of the greats. The groove and funk is really thorough, but maybe a little looser than I prefer. I like the tight concentration of Parliament, and Funkadelic always feels a little looser and more shambolic.

Malo me šokiralo sad kako je snimljen album zapravo jer prvi put slušam na slušalice pa nije toliko došlo do izražaja dosad - šumovi i čudna L-R ravnoteža, zanimljivo. Lude 70-te! Uvijek su mi zapravo bili više Psychedelic nego Funkadelic 😁 Vrh mi je isto što album traje 36min, a Maggot Brain i Wars of Armageddon same po 10min. Psihodeliji uvijek treba vremena 😂 Klasično Can you get to that prva pjesma njihova koju sam čula ikad, i dalje mi je baš posebna, uvijek ju volim ponovno čuti, iako je isilovana. Tako mi dobro zvuči to sve skupa, svašta se događa, ali nije zamorno ni overwhelming. Iako baca na funk, mene zapravo puno više asocira na acid rock i GD djir - da nema tih tipičnih vokala, nisam sigurna bi li mi išta zapravo u toj pjesmi bilo funk. Ali kužim da su to sami začeci žanra, tako da jako uzbudljivo! Hit it and Quit it mi je mrvicu dosadnjikava, ali zato iduće dvije ubijaju 🔥 ova rokačina na Super Stupid diže iz mrtvih. I onda nešto sasvim drugačije sa Back in our Minds. Odlična mi je stvar i izuzetno čudna, što ju čini zanimljivom. Zadnja stvar mamma mia ♥️ ovaj ritam, predivni bubanj, orguljice, ma sve, njam. Ona mi, pak, više gura u neki jazz djir koji se pretapa u psihodeliju, a da ne komentiram uopće prelude zvukove krava, sirena i bogznačega. Dobro da slušam na slušalice jer da mi je Jazz čuo ovo skvičanje mačke sad, brijem da bi me raskasapio. 7/10 Kad sam prvi put otisao na ovu stranicu i testirao kako funkcionira, ovo je bio prvi album koji mi je izbacilo tako da mi je drago da se opet vidimo! :) Pred nekih desetak godina sam bio dosta opsjednut sa Maggot Brain stvari, i sjecam se da sam vise puta dao priliku ovom albumu, ali ostatak mi nikad nazalost nije dosao ni blizu njoj. Zadnja, Wars Of Armageddon mi je isto dosta oke ajde. To ne znaci da mi je ovo sveskupa lose, pogotovo kad je George Clinton u pitanju i svi super gruvaju, ali jasno mi je da mi ipak vise pase pop/disco funk tako da razina erekcije nije ista. Skroz solidno ali nazalost jedna stvar ne moze nositi na ledjima cijeli album. Njoj dajem devetku a ostatku albuma tek sesticu pa nek bude 7/10 na kraju. Kad stavljas tako opaku stvar u album, znas da ce ostatak patiti.

One of the best albums, mixing soul, funk and jazz all together
First song made me text my dad. You get LOST on that track, you zone the fuck OUT. I described it to dad as being taken out of your body, being given a power wash, and being put back in. That's powerful music. Now there were a few songs after that that did nothing like that for me but the talent never left the building so yes.
Interesting. I've heard Maggot Brain the song many times, but never bothered to listen to the whole album. This is great stuff. I've been lucky enough to see Clinton in a venue small enough to reach out and touch him. Profoundly interesting human.
The last 15 mins. of this album is psych-jam band stuff that I'd rather just ignore, but the first half of the album is on point. Sure, all the internet sleuths identified Rill, Rill's shameless sample of Can You Get to That which really diminishes Sleigh Bells artistry if you think about how much of that song is really just this song with different lyrics. The truth is that Funkadelic is sampled everywhere from De La Soul to EPMD to Kelis, The Ramones and Celine Dion. I grew up listening to Living Colour after Cult of Personality hit the radio. I think I bought pretty much every album of theirs and most of it was because of Vernon Reid's guitar who was inspired by this album and specifically Eddie Hazel. So, I'm making an excuse for that last 10 mins., and quite frankly ranking this so I get to look at that album artwork every time I see my page. Pretentious. Yep, I know! I can get to that!
The opening psychedelic rock instrumental was unexpected, as was the origin for the sample in Sleigh Bells “Rill Rill” on the second track. Then Funkadelic moved into a funkier and more anticipated direction.There is some good mix of funk and psychedelic rock, but things fall off the rails with “Back In Our Minds.” Maybe not quite as bad as “One Nation Under A Groove’s” "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)," but still bad enough to kill the vibe.

Not totally legal here, but I’m ignoring the last 12 minutes, or 1/3 of this album. The opening track is not the type of thing I usually like, but this one hit home…an acid trip long guitar solo imagining your mom died. The first side of this album is great.

This was an interesting album from Funkadelic -- very much more hard rock edged than previous albums I've heard from them and Parliament. Funky but very loud and guitaristic. I enjoyed listening to it. Four stars.

"Maggot Brain" was a great track. Very ethereal and a bit Hendrix-like. "Hit It And Quit It" had a really nice hook to it. This album was a fun romp. It wasn't as funky as I was expecting, but was a bluesy-soulful album. Definitely worth a listen.

Hell yes. I love Maggot Brain. Such an incredible eponymous track and album as a whole. Aside from the emotional turmoil in the first song, the rest of the album is fun and funky. Some songs borrow from others in a way that makes the album feel like one whole work.

Hit It and Quit It - I like the energy of this one, but the music really doesn't do much for me. But it's a decent groove. You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks - Similar thoughts to the last song. The energy is pretty fun, but the melodies, vocals, etc, really don't do anything for me. Super Stupid - Starting off strong, I like the opening riffs and melodies. But the vocals aren't my cup of tea. Guitar solo is pretty sick though. Probably my favorite song so far, but most likely won't save it on Spotify. Back In Our Minds - Yeah the vocals here are not for me. This one is not great. Wars Of Armageddon - Is that a baby crying? Yeah it actually is. Maybe it's the Gen Z/Millenial in me, but long ass songs don't hold my attention very well. Guitars are pretty cool but I can tell the song isn't for me and I'm only 2.5 minutes in. It didn't get any better after 2.5 minutes. There are literal fart noises at 7:30 Overall - I respect the album for what it's doing, it's just not my personal taste. Would not revisit.
The first song (Maggot Brain) was an instant add. The whole album was an incredible listen and was so different than anything else I normally listen too but it fit so well into my music taste that made want to find other funk stylings from the 70s. The last song (Wars of Armageddon) was really good until the last like minute. I cant believe that a funk song from 1971 would have too many sound effects but that really was the my issues with that song. I don't think this album was perfect but I was really into and that last minute sort of soured it just because I personally loved the riffs and jamming of the first songs versus sound effects. There could be very good artistic reasons for those but they just didn't hit with me. Regardless I would still highly recommend this album.

Hearing the opening, I was worried this album would be too cool for me. And I was right. But the first song was enough to hook me after the initial intro because 10 minutes of really stick guitar is all that I ever need to get behind a cause.

The opening track is fire; the rest of the album holds up pretty well too, although it did lose me a bit closer to the end. Still, it was a fantastic listen. 4 stars
The good songs are very good but some of the songs are a bit long winded. Can you get to that and hit it and quit it are too good though.
I’ve been vacillating between liking this album and not liking this album. Can You Get to That and Back in Our Minds were pretty good. But otherwise, eh.

The discomforting cover by Joel Brodsky is as famous as Eddie Hazel’s incredible 10 minute opening guitar solo and foreshadows to the neophyte the dirty gritty funk guitar rock contained within.
Classic album for "Can You Get to That" alone.

I like Parliament ordinarily but this album by Funkadelic left me cold. I was waiting big bold and brassy, and got dark, brooding and weird.

I have never heard this before today, it's very good. A nice variety of sounds/styles that are very fun to listen to. Has a really nice chill groove that I like. I'm going to be listening to it again for sure.

Funky
This is a weird record. It's funky. But it's also quite a bit maudlin at times. I'm used to my funk being up up up all the time and no slowing down. Power to the pussy, that's a sentiment I can appreciate. There's so much exploration here, and I don't think all of it landed. Was a cool ride, but not one I'm gunna take again.

Never heard this album before. The first song is a great instrumental which sounds ahead of its time. Pretty much everything on this album works. I bet they were amazing to see live. Strong 3 stars. "Power to the pussy"
I rather liked some of this. I've listened to the cover of Can You Get To That by Balancing Act so I rather enjoyed the original.
I've never heard this album or any of the songs before, but I really liked it! Maggot Brain starts off strong, a little bit like Mars Volta meets Jimmy Hendrix. Definitely took the guitar to the edges there. I smiled at the 90 degree shift to the shorter funkier songs. The thing that is keeping me from giving this five stars is the last song Wars of Armageddon. Too much of too much going on. Cows mooing, screaming cats, whoopee cushions... The groove was nice, but the noises felt like a kid scribbled over a work of art. Maybe that's what they intended.
Fun and different. It's a fat funky album. Surprised not to see Frank Zappa in the credits for the last track (Wars of Armageddon).
