Reviews (page 9 of 14)
Well it was definitely what it proclaimed it was - Funkadelic 😍
So much better than I expected and made a really good station.
I love this album and have listened to it a couple of times before. The mix of funk and psychedelia is heaven.
If just for Maggot Brain itself..
Classic funk! Just love all of it, but it's before the "classic" P-Funk sound I think of
Great stuff, there's a stark difference between the first track and the rest of the album but I don't mind it, I think it still sounds cohesive. Both parts are so good, the sparse guitary first track, and the funky second half. Almost a five, but I wasn't feeling the last couple of tracks as much
Maggot Brain is gorgeously sludgy, even if it is a glorified guitar solo, it has enough weirdness going on that it doesn't offend me. Always loved Can You Get To That. Summer essential that one! Hit It and Quit It is good, but not up to the first two tracks. The rest of the album remains very funky and fun, but never quite hits the sublime heights of the start. Still great though!
Love this album, maybe being harsh but just misses out on a 5 because of the two 10 minute songs dragging on a little.
OMG the solo on track 1 is awesome. Solid album until it starts to fall off at the end.
Groovy and crazy instrumental shredding
Great music for studying
Opening track is a bold move. I don't care much for extended guitar solos that don't seem to serve a song, but gotta respect kicking off an album 10 minutes of sad Hendrix. Plus it's not too masterbatory here. Plus plus it serves the album - I think the point might be to work all the dark and heavy stuff out of your maggot brain from the jump so you can be free to enjoy the remaining 25 booty shaking minutes. The group vocal funk stuff is pretty dope - high voice, mid voice, low low booty rumble voice. The riff rock funk stuff is pretty good - still moves the booty. The fart sounds are fart sounds. It's all a booty shaker. Into it. A-
I wish I had been cool enough back in the day to listen to funk. I had zero expectations for an album titled Maggot Brain. Now I have it on my will-relisten-to list
Decent. Not something I'd normally listen to and the name of the album is off putting but I'd listen again as background music.
Super cool. Really interesting take on funk music. Very eclectic.
Opening song is 🥵
Actually really good. Reminded me of Awaken My Love from Childish Gambino. Can tell he pulled from this genre and maybe even this album a lot. First instrumental guitar riff song was cool, but even better once you got to the rest of the album.
Liked the instrumentals particularly in the opening half of the album. Very good energy but gets quite hectic towards the end.
Great Album
Just a super cool album with a bunch of moods. It's a shame it wasn't more well-received at the time. It would have been really interesting to see this album have a larger effect on the direction of music in the 70s
No idea what to expect, but the album title and artist name seemed like a major deterrent. However, this album is just amazing. The title track actually reminds me of a heavy guitar pink floyd jam. The rhythm/groove on the remaining tracks is infectious without being overdone. The vocals fit, but the music is what soars. Wars of Armageddon is the only one i probably don't need to listen to again. Surprising!
On the whole I did enjoy this album, it was so funky! But I did start to get bored towards the end unfortunately. 4/5 stars.
Funky!
Pretty solid funk album that has the right mix of funk r&b and experimental stuff going on. The first song is a bit slow but after that it’s significantly better. 7.7/10
raunchy grungy jam band vibes. music for smoking copious amounts of marijuana in your garage with the lights turned down
This was not what I was expecting from an album called maggot brain. Fun, weird, funky and soulful! Good stuff.
yes!
Hendrix meets funk, pretty cool. Hard to pick a favorite track because there's a lot of variety, but the title track has one hell of a guitar solo.
First track had me a bit nervous, but funkadelic it truly was. A fun listen (and new discovery, don't think I'd heard anything from the album before).
Decent album and would definitely listen again
Maggot Brain is the third studio album by the American funk band Funkadelic The album charted in the R&B Top 20.[3] Today, it is perhaps best known for its 10-minute title track, performed by guitarist Eddie Hazel.[4] Pitchfork named it the 17th best album of the 1970s.[5] In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked Maggot Brain the 136th greatest album of all time in its updated list. The album opens with a spoken word monologue by band leader George Clinton, which refers to "the maggots in the mind of the universe".[7] According to legend, the 10-minute title track was recorded in one take when Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if he had been told his mother was dead:[8] Clinton instructed him "to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him and let it out through his guitar". The subsequent five tracks have been described as "sour harmony-group meditations heavy with bass, keyboard and class consciousness,"[10] with the band exploring a "psychedelic/funk fusion." The track "Super Stupid" was described by Pitchfork as a "tale of a dumbass junkie set to a tune Black Sabbath would have been proud of."[2] The 9-minute closing track "Wars of Armageddon" has been described as a "freak-out" jam,[4] and makes use of "paranoid, psychedelic sound effects and crowd sounds."[2] Popular music scholar Yuval Taylor described it as "a burning hot prefiguring" of the music that Miles Davis would perform on his 1975 live album Agharta. The album's liner notes are a polemic on fear provided by the Process Church of the Final Judgement, an obscure Satanist religious cult. According to author Rickey Vincent, the organization's presumed association with mass-murderer Charles Manson, along with the album's foreboding themes and striking artwork, lent Funkadelic the image of a "death-worshipping black rock band." After the album was released, the band effectively disbanded:[3] drummer Tiki Fulwood was fired due to drug use; guitarist Tawl Ross reportedly got into an "acid eating contest, then snorting some raw speed, before completely flipping out" and has not performed since; bassist Billy Nelson quit over a money dispute with Clinton.
Great stuff, but -1 star for Wars of Armageddon and a slightly indulgent opening track.
So cool! It's funk/rock/metal mush. You can just tell that this album breaks boundaries.
This album was a nice spectrum of 70's Rock, a prog-rock track of Wars of Armageddon, or a Jimi Hendrix-esque Solo of Maggot brain. (7/10) Favourite Track: Maggot Brain, Can You Get to That
This album is truly fucking wild and great
my brain was pregnant with the funk!
Good album flow, pleasant background listening. Nothing mind-blowing present, but the cohesion I think makes up and pulls it up to 4 stars.
So good. More guitar than funk actually!
So so good. I love how it starts really dark with that epic title track jam, then hits some upbeat funky grooves on subsequent tracks. Monster musicians on show here!
Stand out: Super Stupid and Maggot Brain
Really diverse sound for just seven tracks (with two of them taking up almost a third of the runtime), and the one I don't really care for is the shortest. Key tracks: Maggot Brain, Super Stupid, Can You Get to That
3.5, for a band called Funkadelic, I didn't expect the opening song. The first half definitely stands out, but there was a lot to love about the experimental second half barring the closing flatulence
though not a funk fan, i enjoyed this!
kind of crazy instrumentals ngl
Funky and psych rocky. Opens with a crazy 10 minute long atmospheric, emotional guitar riff. Followed by much more upbeat funk
Pretty funky, not my thing but I can understand why people would enjoy it.
Funkay
This one is a new to me. I have heard of it in passing for sure, but never actually sat down to listen to it myself. Back in our minds absolutely made my brain go nuts. The ringing switching from ear to ear making my whole body tingle. Solid piece of art.
Less funky than I expected from the name, but some really nice classic rock and soul. Reminded me of Hair
Had alot of fun with this one, some great riffs
Rich and varied. This album puts funk, rock, soul and jazz genres in a blender, and turns them into a post-apocalyptic breakfast smoothie.
Als Ganzes nicht mein Ding, aber der 1. Song, Wahnsinn! Daher 4!
talking at the beginning then instrumental; a vibe. not as spooky as the title might lead one to believe.
Strong 4, it is not something, which I will probably remember for long time, but some songs were especially great. Mainly Maggot brain.
Sue Perb
Ooooh yeah. I certainly like to funk all night and funk all day. They call me the funky monkey
pretty sweet jams
Funky stuff.
starts off strong - some of it is really out there (War of Armageddeon) or what sounds like filler (Whole lot of BS) and then an amazing soul song (I miss my baby)... i do like it though - great stuff. Bootsy is so cool.
I liked this one, it was funky and new
All the songs sound very good but one or two of them are a bit odd but can still be good songs.
Really enjoyed this, will listen again! Hearing Hendrix, Andre 3000, Rick James, Marvin Gaye? (last track) and others!
i always enjoy me some funk!
I enjoyed this - some nice riffs and rhythm in there. A little too weird at times. I could have done without the farts and the excessively long tracks. Rounding up to a 4.
Great listen!
Yeah this is really good. I’ll definitely come back to it. 8+/10
Funky. A lot of songs about poo.
This was a surprise! bloody loved it- sounds like it was recorded yesterday rather than 50 years ago! Guess I haven't heard it before as Bjorno said they self destructed not long after putting this out. Seems to have influenced so much of the music I love. Prince, Primal Scream and Alabama 3 have borrowed a fair bit of this. A great record in in own right and will be getting plenty of future listens from me. 4/5
The first track is really good with awesome guitar parts. I was not sure, if I was listening to funk or rock?
Ballsy move having 10 minute opener but a brilliant album made by total individuals.
Funky soul, black feels
this group definitely lives up to its name. Was really getting into some of these beats
Deslumbrante puesta en escena de Can you get To that.
Amazed that this is from 1971. Childish Gambino was clearly inspired by this album for ‘Awaken, My Love’ a few years ago. Gonna play this loud in my car quite often in future. Really loved the solo on the title track, the vocals in general, and the Hendrix-inspired guitar on ‘Super Stupid’. And the energy rules.
Could jam to it!!
Pretty fun for me, you guys were right when you said more psych then funk, but that still works for me
Funkay very good for summer
Funky, Not entirely my taste. but some bangers.
Great album, my first listen and low key loved it.
Good stuff.
A couple of good funky jam bad songs
Not a fan of funk but was pleasantly surprised by songs 1 and 2
Blir genast mer melodiskt i låt 2.
I remember not liking this for some reason the first time I heard it but I was all about it this time around. Loved the big wailing guitar, especially all over Super Stupid and the title track. Also the weird little triangle-on-acid thing on Back in Our Mind is sick. Definitely better than what I've heard from Parliament so far but still a 4.
Very unique with great performances.
Never judge a book by its cover or an album by its title. Not something I would have picked up or even stumbled across if it hadn't been for the wonders of the Internet but a wonderful listen.
Fav Song: Can You Get to That
Really enjoyed this. Loved the ebb and flow between blasts of funk and long jam sessions.
Quite enjoyed it. Got a bit manic in parts, but good overall.
Pretty good actually. Very jazzy instrumentals.
Unexpected rock guitar solos! This is good.
Nice rock and funky time
I listened to it back in high school, highlights You and Your Folks, Super Stupid
Clearly see this was a big inspiration for Gambino's 'Awaken My Love!'. Good album
Banger after banger. I had to deduct from the final score because of the copious fart drops in Wars of Armageddon. Best track: Super Stupid
Pretty sick.
Ok, this wasn't what I was expecting... the first 10min is literally just a big, bluesy guitar solo. The only "funky" thing about it is the wah. Either way, fuckin cool for early 70s. Rest of the album is complete songs, I wouldn't really say funk so much as rock with a funk edge. Catchy and fun with spooky vibes in the keyboards/samples/FX. Kinda feels like Jimi Hendrix meets Santana with a bit of b-movie silliness thrown in. 4/5, probably in reality a 3 but it gets an extra point for being a fun surprise. This morning the site first recommended Transformer by Lou Reed, but shat itself when I tried to add my savage thoughts on that turd. Then it reloaded to this album.... weird bug. Fuck I hope I don't get that Lou Reed album tomorrow :(
Short but powerful. Definitely not what I would have thought when Funk comes to mind, it it’s artful expression and a think piece through music
I get what they are doing here. However, some of the tracks are too long. The idea is explored over and over again. Too much! Good for 1971.
Is that cowbell? I appreciate the work here, even if the style isn't my thing. There are a lot of things I would have expected to annoy me about this, but I never felt that, except for the flatulence sounds towards the end of the wars of armegeddon. I also never grooved to it like I'm sure they and their audience do. I do feel impressed by the sheer number of different instruments involved in the sound.
Started out like a groovy interstellar jazz trip. Ended with a strange song of echoing flatulence noises.
Siis ihan kivaa proge/psykedeelimusaa, tuli vahvat jimi hendrix/the doors - vibat.
No le presté mucha atención, pasó volando. Creo que va bien de fondo
its nice a lilwierd but nice
I never understood the difference between Parliament and Funkadelic until now. Pretty cool history. Also parts of this album have been heavily sampled by hip hop, which makes it familiar and cool.
I understand that this record is on the list; however, I did not really like it. 3/5
Only knew the title track, love that long ass solo. The rest of the album was decent.
Classic and catchy funk music. Not a genre that I listen to all that much but its really fun and enjoyable.
Jimmy Hendrix Vibe.
Wasn't in the best mood for it. Definitely compotent, but i didn't personally connect with it.
You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks
Pretty strong start and definitely good for the most part. Final track kinda ruined the overall vibe.
Pre Funk Funk! Good stuff! 915/1001
Overall: 6/10 I'm not entirely sure what to make of this album. On the one hand, I love the funky sounds and vocals. On the other hand, it almost feels incomplete to me. There's something about it that just makes me think it's unfinished. It sucks because this was an album that got a lot of praise and I was looking forward to, but I just didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Fav Song: Super Stupid
Kinda weird and just weird. Great guitar opener
starts great but doest perform well and gets a bit boring.
favs: can you get to that, hit it and quit it, super stupid

Wild looking cover, kind of just okay funk.
Way more psychedelic rock than one might expect.
Not bad. I’d say 2.75-ish. Maggot brain is nice. However, my tiktok brain isn’t ready for 10 minute tracks
Not their best work, but still pretty decent.
Funky fun album. A little odd, but tolerable.
Actually quite disappointed with how mundane this was. It was funky in parts but not as funky as Isaac Hayes’ music from around this time etc. OK to have on in the background but I doubt I’ll be coming back to it again.
This was not what I was expecting from the titles.
I thought this nearly hour long album was going to drag but it was over in no time. High energy! Mostly instrumental, to my surprise.
I like George Clinton but this wasn’t the best in my opinion. It seems like one long jam without enough variety to add structure.
I mean it starts off phenomenal, and then just loses track half way through. It becomes meandering and surprisingly uninteresting.
I can see this going hard in the 70's More pussy to the people! More power to the pussy! Fave track: Super Stupid
Pretty solid but WTF is with the fart noises in the closing track LOL
It's alright.
This is my second Funkadelic album and it was a little different than I expected. A bit more of a rock sound, but I did like it.
Interesting at times, extremely strange at others.
A pretty good album, I liked Can You Get To That the most.
Funky, a lot of different Moods
Experimental and funky. Would listen while excavating a gothic church in the 60s. Perchance a 5.54/10. Tis a banana pineapple smoothie but not enough orange juice and a little thin for my taste. Also missing a touch of honey
Like #5
It was aight 🕊️🌱. I recognized that it was great musically, but I just wasn’t into it 🫷😐🫸. Overall, I would give it a 3.5/5! 🍃🫡🫠
opening track is super different than the rest of album, good grooves though overall
i don't really get this the way i do the other Parliament Funkadelic albums on the list. the funkiness is deep, that much is certain, but it's so spaced out and psychedelic too. idk i should love that! i love drugs and sex! but it doesn't quite work for me. deserves to be one of the 1001? yeah
the name genuinely made me almost skip this but i’m glad i stuck around
Funky goodness.
it's alright
I liked this more than I expected
for a first album, its a g00d try
👍
better than expected
I never much cared for Parliament so it never occurred to me to give Funkadelic more of a chance. I enjoyed this a lot. Much weirder than I was expecting, refreshingly so. Added to my library.
Blijft funky, hoge 3
Dig the live feel, the energy, the cascading guitar work, and tight AF rhythm section. Can see why it’s a classic album.
first song was sick asf
I enjoyed it
I liked this one!! Pretty fun listening experience.
Was ok
This is fine.
Weird but not unpleasant. Until the last two minutes of the album when they apparently felt that the perfect way to end things would be a series of fart noises. Other than that, though, it’s ok.
Buen album, un poco psicodélico pero divertido
Stand Out Songs: Can You Get To That Back In Our Minds
This album was stellar right up until the last song when it lost me. That's okay, still a funky fresh album, would recommend and enjoy in the future. A solid 3.5 but rounding down to 3 for the last song.
Starts and ends with interesting tracks, but both drag on for too long. Still a good album 3/5
First listen
Not my type of music, but that doesn't mean its bad
No. 395/1001 Maggot Brain 3/5 (3x) Can You Get To That 4/5 Hit It and Quit It 3/5 You And Your Folks 3/5 Super Stupid 3/5 Back In Our Minds 3/5 Wars Of Armageddon 3/5 (3x) Average: 3,09 Was alright, but not among my favorites.
Il funk é strano, però simpatico
Groupe inconnu. =>3/5
Not what I expected. There was a lot of good in this album. Loved the guitar playing. Way more bluesy than what I was expecting. This album takes a left turn a few times and goes into interesting places. Overall, I liked the album, cool writing, but too many left turns... Even for Funkadelic.
I think "Maggot Brain" is one of the greatest guitar solos, so it kinda pains to me to say this, but every other track is mid. 2.5 stars.
Interesting album, great opener and good vibe all the way through, though I don’t really understand that satirical elements of fart noises and spoken word stuff I’ll have to read more about it
Okay, this will make my second Funkadelic album I’ve listened to from the 1,001 must-listen list. The first was the band’s debut, Funkadelic. I liked it alright, but didn’t love it. Hopefully, Maggot Brain, the group’s third album, will be even better. I already know the title song is one of their biggest songs, though I don’t know if it’s a hit, per se. The album was recorded in 1970 and 1971, in Detroit, right after all the riots and crazyness of late 60’s. This was the last album from the original Funkadelic lineup, as three members left the band after the album was recorded. George Clinton is still at the helm, the leader of the band. According to our good friends at Wikipedia, the album hit the top 20 on Billboard’s R&B chart and Maggot Brain, while not a single, is the best known song off the album. Probably because it’s a 10 minute improvised guitar solo by guitarist Eddie Hazel. I'm pretty sure I’ve listened to this album one time in my life, and heard a live version of Maggot Brain as an extra on the reissue of Funkadelic’s debut album. So, let’s go. Track 1 is Maggot Brain, okay, rip the band-aid off right away. I’m just four minutes in and this is an amazing build. Hazel is an incredible guitarist. He plays with a lot of feel and passion. There are certain guitarists for whom it seems like the guitar is an extra limb. Hazel feels like one of those guitarists. Supposedly, Clinton was under the influence of LSD during the recording of thise song and told Hazel to play as if he were just told his mother had died. That’s heavy stuff. Supposedly, other band members and instruments are playing on the track, but Clinton turned them down in the mix, allowing Hazel’s guitar to be the main focus. I know when you hear a 10-minute-long guitar solo, you kind of roll your eyes, but by the end of it, I wanted another five minutes. Just a song you can feel down into your soul. Track 2 is Can You Get To That and it was the second single off the album. I have heard this song before. I clearly remember the low bass voice in the chorus. This definitely reminds me of a Sly & the Family Stone song. It’s sung by the whole group as well as Isaac Hayes female backing group, Hot Buttered Soul. The song is fun, but coming after Maggot Brain, I think it was a bit doomed. Nothing could match its epicness Track 3 is Hit It and Quit It and it starts out funky as hell. Clinton seems to have perfectly taken Sly Stone and James Brown, added LSD, and created a combo rock and funk band. This song has a funky riff that pulls you into the pocket and holds you down. Now we get a nice organ solo. Uh-oh! I just heard it, more cowbell. And now Hazel comes in to end the track with a blazing solo. This song rules. Track 4 is You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks and it starts out like Hit It and Quit It, funky. The bass line is really grooving. Besides being funky, the song has a message. “Ha, but if in our fears, we don't learn to trust each other And if in our tears, we don't learn to share with your brother You know that hate is gonna keep on multiplying And you know that man is gonna keep right on dying.” The song asks the folks to stop fighting each other and come together to combat the injustice and hate in the world. It’s a nice message, but it's rang out for decades and it’ll continue to ring out for decades, sadly. Track 5 is Super Stupid, and this is amazing. This song is a bit more hard-rocking, almost punk funk. I really love the guitar sound in this song. Hazel is a vastly underrated rock guitarist. This album has been really good so far. The main riff of SuperStupid wouldn’t be out of place in an Aerosmith song, like 70’s Aerosmith, not the ballad machine they became in the 90s. That song was just fire in your face. Hazel is still rocking out during the fade. Track 6 is Back In Our Minds and I can tell this one is going to be weird. The song features what sounds like a triangle with a whammy bar. It's another we need to come together to take on the man type song. “We don't fight no more We done closed that door This time for sure We can't stand no more Fussin' and a-cussin' each other When we're supposed to be brothers Livin' in this world we all live in” Oooh, we have some horns chiming in at the end and a nice gospel piano. Not my favorite song on the album, but not too bad. Track 7 and the final track is Wars of Armageddon. This song is all about the drums. Tiki Fulwood is putting on a clinic. Even when Hazel comes in with another hot solo, you can’t help but focus on the drums. The song is almost 10 minutes long, but the drums keep you locked in as Clinton keeps throwing these psychedelic sounds and voices at you. I’m reading that this song was looked at as a freak-out. Holy crapballs….is that farting I hear? I’m seeing where some reveiwers look at this album as dark and sonically reflecting one of the country’s lowest moments in its history. There is darkness, but there’s a lot of humor and fun as well. Though at the end of Wars of Armageddon, we all blow up in nuclear war. But, at the end of the song, there remains a heartbeat of funk in the universe to carry on forever. So there’s that. I must admit, I didn’t love the album. Maybe because over 50 years is separating it from today. Maybe I just don’t get Clinton and what he was trying to accomplish during the recording. Maybe I’m too uptight as someone in the 60s might say. But, I do believe this album is important, if for nothing else than to show the world that Black folks can rock, man. I think a lot of people just think funk when they think of Funkadfelic, but they’re a rock band as much as they are a funk band. For sure, check out the song Maggot Brain, it’s brilliant. The album is just 38 minutes long, so while I didn't love it, it's a fun time. Broaden your mind without the LSD and just listen to Funkadelic.
Its on okey ablum don't think its for me though could get some great samples from it
I love the singing and a lot of the music but it definitely gets too weird for me in places, especially the final song. Fav song: Can You Get To That Least fav: Wars Of Armageddon
The whispering at the end of the first track gave me goosebumps. Not a huge fan of starting and ending the album with 10 minute long songs. Can You Get To That is gorgeous, such an incredibly well made and performed song that contrasts so much with the chaos of the rest of the album. Favourite song: Can You Get To That Least: Wars of Armageddon
bardzo przyjemne
Pretty good, very funky (duh). I liked their voices. Super Stupid was my favorite. 5.3/10.
Me costó conectar. Es un álbum tranquilo para comenzar
Who doesn’t love an album that starts with a 10 minute guitar solo? Not bad but a little disjointed.
Pretty good in the middle but too much about this is gross
Catchy
Not really my thing but good either way
I had no idea that hook from Can You Get To That was them. Cool
Hit it and quit it 🆒
Totally different from what I usually listen to and this album is reasons why I love this project.
Really liked this one, its not too hard on you The songs are quite long tho
Good and weird
The title song is of much more interest than the rest (which are fine/good pale in comparison nonetheless).
Soul rock?
First time listening to Funkadelic album. Surprised and not what I was expecting. Hear the influence this had on Lenny K.
I was liking this album until the second half of Wars of Armageddon. Other than that, I liked it.
I liked this more than the other Funkadelic project but not by much.
I always thought this album was popular just because of its amazing album cover. The bands name is fitting. The guitar work on the first song is impressive. Overall though it was just ok for me.
I enjoyed this even though it was outside of the norm for me. Amazing guitar throughout. This is the kind of album you throw on headphones and enjoy the ride (and smoke em if you got em).
Earl besser
fun, instrumental, upbeat
Hoping I don't get crucified for this but a bit average
Interesting, not really my jam but very cool. Funky, obviously!
found and know their sound, too bad it's not my preference highlights: Can You Get To That
Not really for me, a bit too strange. I can see the genius, but it wasn't fun to listen to.
Maggot Brain the song 5/5. Maggot Brain the album....unfortunately, I don't think the rest of it lives up to that amazing first track and the rest of it is fairly forgettable to me.
such an interesting mix, the riffs gave me chills
lekker !
Not my type
Good album, some good guitar work and interesting production. Likely groundbreaking back in its day but not something I enjoyed overwhelmingly.
A strange album where some songs are a blend of almost heavy rock and funk that groove and others are too long. Over all I find this album has a strange sense of humor, at least I found it quite funny at times … I mean it starts with "Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time and you all knocked it up" after all. Favorite Songs: Can you Get to That ; Hit it and Quit it
very interesting. not inclined to listen again but obviously very beautiful nonetheless.
Maggot Brain - 3/5 Can You Get To That - 4/5 Hit It And Quit It - 3.5/5 You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks - 4.5/5 Super Stupid - 4/5 Back In Our Minds - 3.5/5 Wars Of Armageddon - 3/5
Short, albums, ok to zone out to
1st time I’ve listened to this early Funk album. Lots of things happening, it’s a fun mix.
Favorite songs: Can You Get to That, Hit It and Quit It, Super Stupid
Non l'ho finito. È strano ma ci sta. La prima meravigliosa
First song starts good but is a bit to long. Couple after are good then if falls off during the end Can’t give it a 5 just because it’s funkadelic and don’t think it is a 4 either high end 3 teetering on a 4 Will upset a few people I know, deal with it
237/1089 a pretty nice funky record faves: can you get to that, wars of armageddon 54/100
I like funk and I also like various psychedelic styles. What Funkadelic presents on “Maggot Brain” is actually very special, and it doesn't just seem in places as if the right substances were essential for an unclouded listening experience. However, since these were not supplied and were not clearly recommended, I am judging my sober experiences here. These can be described as mixed: really cool moments alternate with those that simply leave you perplexed.
Favorite Track: Maggot Brain
great fun album, love the instrumental.
Bizarre but I kinda liked it
6.0/10
Fun listen. Call it a 3.5 rounded down.

There's some really good guitar on this. Favorite Track: You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks
Top Songs: Can You Get To That
I dug this but just wasn’t really drawn in even though I listened to it twice in a row.

Cool, but intense
Nice listen. Really loved the first track with the soulful intro and the long melodic Hendrix-styled solo, and enjoyed a good chunk of the rest of the tracks. Surprisingly for "Funkadelic" it didn't sound all that funky to me, or at least my white ass impression of what funk is. Still, an enjoyable listen. 3.5 stars.
That was a weird album. I was not expecting all the guitar shredding on the first track, but the follow up had some good funk, maybe not commercial and fun like other funk albuns I listened to it here, but good funk as well. I can see why it is on the list and agree with it, but it will be not in my holy grail of funk albuns 3/5
Way less funky than the artist would suggest, still fun!
3.5
I've always seen the iconic album cover, but never gave this a listen. I was pleasantly surprised and the soundscape they were able to create here. Although a couple moments dragged, that was not widespread on this. I can't wait to give this some more listens.
Nice and easy, but not of my type tbh
Tick tock tick tock 10 minute songs can work but 2 of then is pushing it
This would've gotten a 4 if it hadn't fallen off so hard after the first couple tracks. The last track really cemented the 3 star rating. Otherwise this was great, love the sound and feel to it.
quite enjoyed the guitar on this. lyrics were meh. and then the weird animal/fart sounds on the last track..... shame since it started so strong.
I know this is classic, but the gigantic farts in the last song dropped this from 4 to 3.
Creative but often juvenile jamming. Sets the stage for other Afro-Pop rock crossovers. Influential & sometimes, but not often, great. A 3.
Out of the ordinary. Good rhythm
Cow bells & organ track fav.
En del kult, flink folk, men ingen bangers
An incredible opening that the rest of the album didn't live up to. I've listened to Maggot Head four times through now, it reminds me of the Mars Volta. Really great song, ok album.
Well this album had certainly many styles and in that sense didn't get boring. Can't say I liked a lot of the songs but then the ones I did were interesting. Solid 3
more power to the pussy. more pussy to the people
Off to a bit of a rough start with a 10 minute meandering instrumental song. The rest of the album was alright, but a bit too unfocused and jam-like for my taste. Low-point was definitely the fart sounds in 'Wars of Armageddon', which also turned out to be a 10 minute meandering journey. Not a big fan, but wasn't terrible. Weak 3.
Fun. Jammy. Little Hendrixy.
Cool
Funky and a bit psychodelic. I didn’t really understand the first 10min track although I understand how it can be seen as cool
It starts off very promising with a long beautiful improvisation, the harmony is straightforward but the guitar work makes up for it. The rest, i could barely remember since it sounded like run of the mill funk to me. Not a bad listen but definitely a letdown after that first song.
Started off as a boring album, mellowed out into an OK album, ended on annoying. I'll go with 3 stars since overall is was meh.
I dunno if I can get quite this funky on a regular basis
Songs I saved: Can you get to that Hit it and quit it You and your folks, me and my folks
Experimental in a fun way, but a little too far out at times.
cool I did like the funk of the first one but not really my vibe
Not really songs for me, mostly instrumentals. But its vibey
Favourite Track: Maggot Brain
1. Definitely an introduction. Guitar is so good. Love intros like this, that set up a concept. Definitely kept your attention for 10mins. 2. Good song, not as interesting. 3. Good beat, and guitar riffs are nice. 4. Liked the instrumental, very funky. Definitely better than the other two albums I have listened to. I appreciate the concept and the guitar solos are amazing. The first track is definitely the best. Last track has another great guitar solo. Top song: Maggot Brain.
Maggot Brain is the third studio album by the American funk rock band Funkadelic, released by Westbound Records in July 1971. The album charted on the Billboard R&B Top 20. It is perhaps best known for its ten-minute title track, largely consisting of an improvised solo by guitarist Eddie Hazel. In 2009, Pitchfork named it the 17th best album of the 1970s. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked Maggot Brain the 136th greatest album of all time in its updated list.
ha sit monm
Sort of fun, sort of annoying
Maggot Brain leads with ten minutes of rock riffs that give way to some real soul. "You and your folks, me and my folks" probably still as resonant today. Favourite track: hit it and quit it.
Hard not to think of black mass over highway 90
I kind of liked some of their music, it was fun and funky. But I did not like the voices, the singing. And it’s a bit dated.
The review that says “ Guitar goes whéeeeerreeaaaarrrgh” is pretty much a perfect description - the title track absolutely rips. My personal enjoyment of this album does reflect the quality of the music itself. While I likely wouldn’t return to this, I absolutely appreciate this album for what it is.
Interesting!
Liked it
No real strong stand outs for me, but the guitars were good. It would be good on for background sound, but probably won’t revisit it.
I enjoyed the Rick aspect of this.
funky
First song was amazing, after that it was meh
Extremely funky and a bit psychadelic, gestalt mind, Mother Nature kind of vibe.
It was kinda funky and pretty experimental, I think it would've benefited from being much more funky and a little less experimental
*1971. American funk. *This is a pretty cool album - classic funk. RATING - 6.5/10
I feel like the idea of a ten-minute song built around one long guitar solo, was more exciting in a 70s studio with a load of drugs and cool funk musicians that its actual execution. It’s a decent album but just not massively my thing.
I liked this album. It would have been a 4 star album if not for the excessively long instrumental tracks that opened and closed it.
It was okay, I could hear the levels of the guitar "crying" in a sense. This album needed an intro about it. Didn't gravitate to it right away, nor change the music right away. It just played in the background.
it was synth synth
I love black talent. The main instrument was just a cowbell, yet they were able to make Wars Of Armageddon sound good (besides the random diarrhea part near the end). Very funky
Was pretty groovy and actually liked some of the songs.
At little bit uneven yet fun listen.
Best Song: Can you Get to That I call a little false advertising here. When you call your album Funkadelic, you expect some serious funk. I did not receive the the dosage of funk said title would respect. It was ok, nothing I would go out of my way for or listen to again. 3/5.
It's alright. Groovy for sure but not much else going on, at least for me to enjoy it.
a REALLY great listen. worth a second listen
Cool psychedelic stuff but would totally flop in today's day and age.
One nation was such a cracker expects big things. Was a bit average
Decent Record, nice grooves, and shredding guitars. Super Stupid is great, fucking great riffs...
