Reviews (page 15 of 15)

Once again, the Pixies do not disappoint. Doolittle is such an influential album that there's not much more I can say about it. It is a wonderful blend of punk, surf rock, and new wave that would go on to influence bands like Radiohead and Nirvana. This album is more accessible than their debut, Surfer Rosa, but without compromising what made them great.

I liked this album better than "Surfer Rosa", which has my favorite track from the Pixies. I knew three tracks from Doolittle, which were my favorites from this review: "Wave of Mutilation", "Here Comes Your Man" & "Monkey Gone to Heaven". The album had a level of noise that you'd expect from the Pixies, but a couple tracks ("Tame", "Crackity Jones") were noisy and chaotic enough to dip down into the "no thanks" category. I liked the album, but probably won't come back for a full re-listen.

Easily one of my favorite albums of all time. Such a cohesive album, it's innovative and creative and inspires me to be my creative best. Nearly perfect album. Favorite Tracks: "Debaser" "I Bleed" "Monkey Gone to Heaven" "Hey" "Gouge Away" "Wave of Mutilation"

Finally some good fucking music

i love the pixies, they were basically the gateway to my punk phase this album is full of bangers

I enjoyed a couple of tracks, but most of it didn't do much for me

Excellent album, definitely on the forefront of the grunge/alternative rock movement. Funny, I always thought the song "Here Comes Your Man" was a remake of a classic 50s or 60s song. It just has that feel to it, but today I learned it's a Black Francis original. I don't love his voice but otherwise this is a very good album. 4 stars.

How is this so good?

Shaggy and cool

its fine. I guess its alt rock? not totally sure 2.5

It's a classic and every track is a standout quite frankly

Gave this a good couple of listens as I've been looking forward to landing on a pixies album in this little adventure. Have always wanted to do a deep dive on them but never got around to it. This is a solid album with a few 5 star songs. Overall 4 but keen to hear more from them.

The last great Pixies album.

Never knew this album came out in the 80s. Love it.

Every single song on this album is killer. A true masterpiece beginning to end.

Well, my actual review got deleted when the page refreshed. So anywayyys...5 stars for this album of all killers 'n no fillers. Great job by a talented bunch of Mass-holes! They're probably Patriots fans too ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

At times visceral (Tame, Gouge Away) and at times pure pop (Here Comes Your Man, Debaser), Doolittle is an indie guitar masterpiece with hooks galore. Their loud quiet loud aesthetic has often been copied and maybe dulls the impact of listening to this album today but no band has done it better and on this album the Pixies nailed it.

Fine in places but I struggle in others. Fine album but unlikely to listen in a sitting.

SLICING UP EYEBALLS AH HA HA HA Favourite band of all time. Dark, Furious, Surreal, Funny, Melodic, Noisy And probably their most well known album (though I prefer Surfer Rosa as an album) Debaser is possibly my favourite pixies song, single at least. Wave of Mutilation also amazing. and Gouge Away. Ugh all of it! But some other less known absolute favourites are also here - La La Love You, Hey, Tame

Brilliant little album with more than a handful of great tunes.

One of my favorites of all time!

Weird as fuck, but a decent enough listen.

Best Pixies album. Timeless... Required listening. That is all.

A little repetitive, but good, liked it a lot!

Know it well. Fantastic tunes

head banger for a rager . probably fun to see live.

I like this album :) already heard it.

Some great tracks that I hadn't heard before. Can definitely see the influence on grunge, metal, and punk.

-Alternative, meh -Short lyrics -A lot of quiet -> loud

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Debaser, Monkey gone to heaven, Hey

Doolittle is an album who tries to find itself with a lot of songs (15) in a little time (39mins). It does not help since I felt as no ideas were experienced completely. The first half of the album reminds The Cure's songs while the other half, the more original and exciting one, creates an Radiohead-like atmosphere. Since the style varies so much during the listening, I felt lost and couldn't fully appreciate any songs due to its premature ending. What seems like a ground-breaking album, for it being in the list, will last in my mind as a compilation of attempts to find a new style.

I adore this album. It’s as if they wanted to play music like the early Beatles but every time they tried this twisted sound came out instead. Frank Black screeching vocals, Kim Deal’s insistent bass, Joey Santiago’s intricate guitar solos and David Lovering’s sharp drumming - what a combination.

Was reading an article that said the Pixies were the most influential alt/indie rock band of all time and this album shows why.

DIS CA ZO!! 10/10 ludomatics

We saw the Pixies perform this full album on it's 25th anniversary tour at DAR Constitution Hall. A seemingly unconventional venue for the Pixies. They must be true Daughters of the American Revolution. Kate asked if we heard this for the first time today, would we feel the same way about it that we do after discovering it at a much younger age and listening to it for more than two decades. This review nailed the dynamic of the Pixies, and what makes them so great - "The tension from straddling pop’s melodies with punk’s energy, Black Francis’ anguished lead vocals with bassist Kim Deal’s harmonies, and Deal’s own juxtaposition of flatly deadpan with perky and sweet make all of these tracks jump."

It's telling that Here's Comes Your Man is the most popular song from this album. It's catchy, melodic and has a great hook. It's the only song on this album I care for. There are a few others that showed promise in the first few bars, but then the strident guitars, angry vocals and discordant noise kicked in and they lost me. It's just not my kind of music.

Love the variety and “Hey” is on just about every mixed tape I ever made.

One of my college roommates was way into The Pixies, so I’m sure I’ve heard this album before. I was very much in the infancy of my music discovery at the time, and I was firmly committed to classic rock. This time I’m actually paying attention. I definitely remember Gouge Away fondly. The biggest surprise of this album is Here Comes Your Man. The chorus, and especially the lead guitar part, sound like a 1950s radio hit by a band of dudes wearing suits on the Ed Sullivan Show projected in black and white. Other highlights are Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and Hey. I very much dislike the screaming parts of Tame, but they are only a small slice of the album. It’s nice that my friend, J, and I get to bond a bit over this album 20 years after college. He got to tell me it’s about time, dumbass.

really weird at some times but liked some songs!

-generally solid alternative rock -nothing really stood out, but very nice -will probably give it another listen

Great band and great album!

Great album that I come back to every now and again. Standouts are Debaser, Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven

Really good, nothing more to say.

Another good album, am I gonna rush out to buy it? No. Will it eventually make its way into my collection? Possibly. But nothing wrong with it, just not my absolute cup of tea.

Definitely an acquired taste, need more listens

I realize Pixies were a huge influence on the 1990s so-called "alternative" scene - the quiet/LOUD/quiet music that among others Nirvana capitalized on. So there are a lot of people that like it obviously :) - confession: I really hated this genre of music and especially when I lived in Boston around the time the Pixies were active; almost the opposite of the kind of music I was into and grew up on. I always find it good to revisit music I rejected years ago to see how I might hear it differently... I'm definitely way more open-minded about music than i was in my early 20s. I can appreciate a few of the songs as having a decent melody and I definitely tip my cap to them for being pioneers of this sound. Hearing "Here Comes Your Man" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" throws me right back to being 22 again and walking around Harvard Square, heading into Newbury Comics... that was a nice memory :) All said, beyond those songs I don't enjoy it and won't listen again - would have reflexively given it a 1 star 20 years ago :D just out of spite haha and honestly still feel that way for most of it (would be 2 or 3/10) but I'll give it a 2 on influence -> still not for me (and Black Francis' voice is just a straight up 'no').

The album started off really strong, but quickly fell off. Track 6 and beyond I didnt enjoy very much.

The first half of the album was really quite enjoyable and I really liked 'Debaser'. The second half got weirder - 'Crackity Jones' and 'No 13 Baby' were not my favourites. I think this album is a grower, but I base my rating on first listen, so it's a 3.

Great album

It’s amazing to me that a band could be this weird, loud, and catchy all at the same time.

Sounds great, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this

I really like this album. I was hooked within like the first 12 seconds of Debaser. Those jangly chords are the truth.

Debaser - yelllike no one listened, 2nd half is coo Tame - nothing but Wave of Mutilation - waaave I Bleed - same inside Here Comes Your Man - here he come Dead - sendoff Monkey Gone to Heaven - 6+7+? = ? Mr. Grieves - will talk soon Mr. Crackity Jones - crack is wack La La Love You - hard to say easy to confuse No 13 Baby - the eyes are telling There Goes My Gun - shoot first ask q later Hey - meant to be Silver - leaving for tomorrows better Gouge Away - do if you must 7/14 songs enjoyed best song* Here Comes Your Man 5.5/10

Angst truly is timeless

It’s a collection of really brief songs that are also fully formed pieces. So you get one song that does a thing, then the next song will do something else.

Who doesn't love some Pixies

норм

Typical late 80’s, early 90s music. 2.5/10

OK nothing special for me

Nota: 6/10

(Accidentally listened on shuffle) I quite liked this album. The variety of vocals across the album was cool - shouty vocals across the whole album would wear me out pretty quick. Clean simple basslines were tasty on tracks like Gouge Away. Particularly liked Monkey Gone to Heaven and Here Comes Your Man.

Hate it. I really can't enjoy punk (or is this even punk? This album generator is giving me the feeling that I don't really know what punk is - but anyway, I hate this one). Somehow it's simultaneously annoying chaotic noise and musically absolutely boring to me.

An already stressful day enhanced by the fraught screams of the pixies into my eardrums. Resting heart rate 91bpm.

Never really given Pixies much of a chance before. Only listened (and enjoyed) their bigger hits but never ventured much deeper and I’m pleasantly surprised with this album. I think they’re a little overrated by pseudo music purist twats who ping out ridiculous opinions to make themselves feel clever and inferior to others. It’s not the best album of all time or anything but it’s decent, easy listening with big bass riffs and has some great tunes on it such as HCYM and Debaser. If I could, I would give it a 3.5. Fuck this voting system.

Expected filler. Got bangers. I was a fan of the lyrics and the vibe, but unsure how quickly I'd run back to this one. Solid. Ps. Here Comes Your Man is the most out of place song on any of the albums so far.

High energy garage rock. This album has some of Pixies best tunes including my favourite and inspo for early V Men - Hey. Having said that it’s a long album with a fair few filler songs which means I’m giving it a 3.

Absolute genius!!

Good record. Gouge away <3

Believe it or not, I've never listened to Doolittle all the way through before today, and now my brain is fried. It's as disorienting as if I'd been on a half dozen rides at a carnival after getting drunk. Maybe it's the sheer number of influences Frank Black draws from on Doolittle, from country to reggae; or how the album whipsaws from pop to punk on a dime, from sweet to shrill, or it could be the highly original freakshow lyrics, but no--ultimately, it's that all of this winds up sounding not like a stylistic mishmash, but rather an astonishingly congruent and cathartic artistic statement. Some of the songs on this album burn themselves into your brain on first hearing--Debaser, This Monkey's Gone To Heaven, and Wave of Mutilation come to mind--but every last track contributes to the cosmic mindfuckery that is Doolittle. Let me see if I can explain a little how the Pixies pull this off. It's not that these are virtuoso musicians or anything. It's more about how they bring together disparate elements in violently imaginative ways. One thing that Frank Black does is he tends to cut out sections of songs that would normally be left in as part of conventional pop structure. For example, on Debaser, there are these little two or four bar sections that connect ideas--they're exactly as long as they need to be and no longer. It's as if Frank Black found a way to make ADHD an integral part of his songwriting. And then, there's the contrasts: on the same song, check out how the poppy countermelody of Joey Santiago's guitar co-exists with Frank Black's shouted vocals. Or the segue from a gentle reggae lilt to a demented hillbilly stomp on Mr. Grieves? This is twisted stuff, even before you factor in lyrics about sliced eyeballs, driving into the ocean, and interracial relationship fantasies. Doolittle is a blast from beginning to end.

Experimental and undoubtedly inspirational, theres not a lot of filler on this album. While I enjoyed it and probably wouldn't argue if someone put it on, I don't think that I would ever put it on myself. There really isn't a stand out song on this one. It's experimental and accessible, but not particularly catchy. catchy

3/5 okayish album

oh please. 5 stars.

Heard it. Great.

I’m here for the Pixies. I had heard of them but never listened to them. Weezer vibes and I dig.

Closest we have had to a 5 star album so far, some fantastic songs but a little drop in quality in the second half.

Not for me

This has got me more into the Pixies than I ever have been. Some great tracks in here

First time giving this Pixies album a listen. Glad I’ve got to know the Pixies better during all of this, well defo revisit this album more than the first one I reckon. Knew a couple of the tracks on there, and really enjoyed the ones that I didn’t already know. Here Comes Your Man is a classic.

Tämä kuulosti minun korvaan aika samalta kuin edellinen arvosteltu levy "The Strokes - Is This It".

day 1, interesting album not exactly my type but ok lol

more punkie than i thought it would be!

Marginally prefer this album to Surfer Rosa and I think it has a slightly stronger legacy probably because there are more recognisable songs like Debaser, Tame, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone To Heaven, etc. 9/10

Stone cold classic

While the other Pixies album was a solid 8, this is more of a 7.5. It had more tunes that I knew on it, but preferred the last. Still, my roundup rule keeps it at 4/5.

So many bangers. A game changer for me in formative years. Shout out to Conrad Roots for making me listen

One of my all time favorites. Hey always makes me want to pick up my bass.

In my top 3 of all time

Great tunes - I prefer Surfer Rosa but this is excellent.

Doolittle is a very loud, noise-filled album and I don't mean that in a bad way at all. I'd never heard any of this bands music before, so it's safe to say that when I pressed play and the opening track 'Debaser' started to play, I wasn't expecting what I was hit with. Tame is filled with screams and really weird noises and made me feel rather uncomfortable, to be honest. The rest of the album is filled with more of the same loud, noisy vocals and instruments. I have never really listened to anything like this before and I enjoyed it.

It's a fantastic album that I listen to fairly regularly.

"Don't know about you But I am un chien andalusia" (Debaser) "What's that floatin' in the water? Oh, Neptune's only daughter" (Mr. Grieves) El resto del disco sin más, pero Debaser es tan locurote que le voy a poner cuatro estrellas igualmente.

This albums has a few great songs and others that are just there to add play time. It is a good example of the style at that point in time but I doubt I'll listen the full album ever again.

One of my all time favourites

Awk COME ON. It's feckin' Doolittle like. It's "alternative rock" at it's finest, whatever that actually means.

I got modest mouse vibes, kinda punk guitar alt or something

its pretty good

I liked to know more about Pixies, which I already like, but this album is fine. Nothing so special that deserves too much highlight, but very nice songs.

I already liked this album. The Pixies are such a unique band IMO and in this album they show that's possible to showcase a variety of musical talents and styles and still put out a cohesive album.

Solid album - 3.5; particularly enjoyed the second half, but still prefer Surfer Rosa

One of my favorite alternative albums. Every song has a purpose, terrific pacing and just weird enough to separate it from the crowd

Better than I remember

I wish I found this in 1989

Strong guitar hero vibes

Yeah it was ok, not a huge fan

Que es este choshinero?... Pura pedazera ni debería ser un álbum

Kjærkomment gjenhør!

3 taugt schon

'Debaser' - absoluter BÄNGÄ, sondtrack von SKATE3. Außerdem liebt auch Stingo "the voice of AEV" diesen song (#Qualitätssiegel) Insgesamt ne runde Sache. A weng gschrei, bissi punkig und geht ins Ohr. Gehard Abfahrt!

Ok, interesting

One of my favorite albums! "Debaser", "Here comes your man", "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Gouge away" are classics, and most of the other tracks are bloody good too (except maybe "Tame")

Fantastic album! So, so good mirror universe indie rock. Fave track - there are maybe 2 or 3 tracks on the album that _aren't_ contenders for being a fave. I'm going to pick "No. 13 Baby" from my listens yesterday as the highlight - those guitar lines!

Liked it and it was entertaining all the way through

Pretty decent rock 3.2

Songs: Gouge away, Debaser

Love it!

Absolutely stunning album from start to finish. Very catchy yet abrasive at times. A timeless album.

not too bad

Pleasantly surprised - a lot heavier (in sound and lyrical content), more substantial, and more interesting than my perception of the Pixies, which was formed by hearing "Where Is My Mind" over and over again in various contexts over many years.

It's hard to be objective about an album whose cassette I owned and whose songs belonged on a third of all my mixed tapes. Perfect road trip album

Original 80s/90s garage sound. Not for everyone but lead the way for modern artsy/need rock/alternative

I'm quickly becoming a huge Pixies fan. Just legendary tunes and so amazingly different than anything else out there.

an awesome album

I don’t have a lot to say about this, don’t know enough about the genre or The Pixies but this album is great.

You can’t really go wrong with this album

This is the punk I was expecting, since the early 70s stuff was way too obtuse and angry for me! Or maybe this is early 70s, and I just like the Pixies a lot more? It's calmer, at least.

it was fine :)

Damn that's good

I'm not the biggest Pixies fan, but the good songs on this album are really good.

It was cool listening to an album from the year I was born. Definitely grungy, which I thought I would like. The sound lyric wise is much more free form (think talking heads) but not as great as what comes later in the 90s. It’s a cool starting point into the type of music that will follow. If nothing else it’ll be cool to recognize one of these songs if they pop up.

Amazing album, i like every song

This is really good, but should be listened to actively

Big part of my high school and college years and beyond. They laid the groundwork for so much that was to come (and which is still going). My favorite part is the unique phrasing. Everything is so infectiously memorable. The lyrics are a great combination of cryptic poetry and a down to earth, almost conversational quality. Their music too is a seductive balance of simplicity and sophistication. Very human/vulnerable. Love both Frank Black and Kim Deal. Saw Frank Black solo playing a good amount of pixies material in college for like 3+ hours. Such stamina and energy. Total force of nature. Sweat running down from his bald head into his eyes the whole time.

Really impressed with the variety here. A ton of great tracks. 4.5

Can really hear the direct line from this to MGB. Here Comes Your Man and Where Is My Mind are glorious. 3.5 rounded down, prob wouldn't re-listen.

Fuck yeah

I did not like the album

One of the most influential albums of the 80s. There would be no Nirvana, Radiohead, Strokes, etc. without this band or this record. Loud quiet loud, baby. This is a top to bottom masterpiece of noise, melody and killer production. Black Francis’ voice on this is shredded and Kim Deal is just the coolest bass player ever. Favorite track(s): Debaser, Tame, This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven Least favorite track: No 13 Baby

One of my all time favorites, so nice I listened twice. Just prototypical and great

definitely hearing the surfer blood like sounds. pixies were an influence.

so good it's not even fair. i will play every track on the jukebox until the end of time.

The vocals were pretty hard to understand. But I guess that's the style. I thought the best section of the album was Mr. Grieves, Crackity Jones.

A great mix of surf rock, danceable songs, and a twinge of instability.

Here Comes Your Man oli hyvä kappale, jonka tyylisiä olisi kuullut mielellään enemmänkin.

Everything about this album is so on the money. So loose and tight at the same time. Cmon it's the best

Nostalgia jam

It was a good album but I just personally didn't enjoy it.

I need to listen to more Pixies

I thought I was going to like it more

Needs more listening

Not for me

I was already very much a fan of the song “Debaser” thanks to my days of playing NCAA Football ‘06, so I had hear some Pixies before this listen through. The album’s sound feels very much ahead of its time for being the late 80s. All in all, it was an enjoyable listen, though I probably won’t revisit it that often.

Best songs: Here comes your man, La la love you, Hey Worst songs: I bleed nice bass tone weird vocals 7/10

Awesome Alt-rock album. A long overdue intro to the Pixies

A transformative alt-rock album; sound is very ahead of its time and the future bands that were influenced by it are so palpable.

Never really listened to a full Pixies album before. Some classics "Gouge Away" and "Here comes my man". Overall enjoyed, but probably takes a few more repeat cycles to fully click.

Had some moments where I vibed with it, but just not generally my preferred style. I can see why some love this though.

Never really like 'punk' music, or anything that was considered grunge. This was really no exception. I enjoyed the backend of the album with Hey being probably my favorite song.

Really enjoyed it. Quite varied sounds and nice funky beats. Was going to five stars but the last couple tracks were a bit meh

listened to only 2 songs not my type i could see why people like it though

Already a firm favourite. I get lost in the guitar before getting kicked by the angsty vocals. Love the backing vocals on this album. People forget the voice is another instrument. Quality

Ihan ok. Bändin tuotantoa lähinnä hittibiisin verran tuntevana odotin enemmän. Ei kuitenkaan paskakaan.

Some enjoyable parts, but all in all not my cup of tea. Will probably never listen to this album again.

I didn't like this album very much. I wasn't expecting the Pixies to be so scream-y? but especially on the second track (Tame, I think?) it was a little much for me. "Here Comes Your Man" is surf-rock-y and definitely the best song on the album

I like it better than most mainstream Pixies stuff.

Here comes your man

I've listened to a few of these songs before but never the entirety of the album. Loved it.

Have heard this one before but this time it really clicked, great stuff 👌

12/4 Love the edgy, dark content of it, I'm not too big a fan of the genre of noise-pop apparently. It's not bad per se, just I always expect the noise to be more melodic... yeah. Standout Tracks: Debaser, Tame, I Bleed

It's always interesting when you realize where an artist's influence comes from. A few songs in I was like... wait, Mitski??

closer to a 4.5

this album make me go wohoo like a cowboy

just not my taste

Obviously inspired and inspirational, and no doubt a nailed-on 5 to many. But I don't really connect to this as much as similar-ish indie bands from that era. Give me Pavement or Dinosaur Jr instead!
