The Pixies best album. The album that inspired much of what became the grunge movement and on into the indie craze. 3.5/5.
I didn't like the beginning so much, too punky. Later on it got a bit better, but didn't really grab me. Overall not too annoyed so will give benefit of the doubt and a 3 star instead of 2.
Overall I was quite pleasantly surprised, but I'm not sure yet whether I'll really listen to this in the long run. None of the songs individually really grabbed me, however I will commit to another listen.

Fun album from start to finish. Had a blast listening to it and plan on revisiting these Pixies fellas many more times in the future.
Pretty good album. I loved the contrast between the more melodic stuff and the harsh loud stuff and they blended it really well. Never listened to these guys before but I can totally see their influence on 90s bands.
Overall it was good. A few songs like Wave of Mutilation and Monkey Gone to Heaven stood out.
This checks a lot of boxes for me. Rock but with some tonal variety throughout, hits spaced apart, decent non-hits that give the album room to breathe, sweet-spot track and album lengths, nostalgia. Favorite: Debaser
The video game Rock Band allowed online players the options of purchasing various albums that were available to play in the game - this album was one of them. I have lovely memories of screaming at my living room TV during Monkey Goes to Heaven as I did my best Frank Black impersonation and mashed buttons on a toy guitar. Also, Here Comes Your Man is a perfect pop ditty (that must really rankle Black Francis) and the best song ever recorded about train-hopping hobos.

A bit intense, noisy and too rock-heavy for me, as shown by tracks like 'Tame'. I do, however, like the tracks: 'Here Comes Your Man', 'Monkey Gone To Heaven', 'Hey' and 'Gouge Away'. 4 songs out of 15 I like. Standout track: 'Hey'. 3 stars.

A more electrified, unhinged Violent Femmes feel to this one. Oddly prescient of the 90s with its grungy riffs mixed on top of radio-friendly acoustic, an amalgam of all the best parts of the decade to come. My only qualm here is that a few tracks are too short to fully realize their melodic potential, but otherwise this is a great, fun listen throughout.

Interesting that I got this about a month after Surfer Rosa. I was not expecting to get this album so soon. The randomness of the algorithm continues to amuse me. As I predicted a month ago, I did like this album better. Their sound is a little more developed, a little more cohesive. I already knew three songs. I really like “Here Comes Your Man” (new to me) but has anyone else noticed that it sounds a lot like REM’s “Stand”? I’m torn about whether I’d keep this on my phone and listen to it again (the difference between 4 and 5 stars for me). I guess however I feel about it tomorrow at 5:30AM will be the answer…

My fave of their classic first 4 albums. They mastered the quiet/loud thing which Nirvana later nicked. The tunes are ace there are 4/5 classics on the this one. (Love Wave of Mutilation) Black Francis lyrics are weird and cryptic. Essential stuff. 4
Classic
One of my all-time favorite albums and band. The "Psychotic Beatles" (as David Bowie stated) have had and continue to have a massive influence on many "indie" bands. If you like this, I recommend Surfer Rosa next.
Always happy to see the Pixies show up, and wasn't expecting a 3rd album on this list so this was a very pleasant surprise. Compared to Surfer Rosa and Bossanova this is definitely a much more "accessible" album as the wiki states, and it's solid bangers front to back. Great guitar hooks, Here Comes Your Man has such an instantly recognizable riff that you can't help but get down to. Found myself recognizing a lot more songs than I expected as well, Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and Hey. Added a lot to the playlist off this listen, and would absolutely buy this album if I saw it out in the wild.
More flawed with age, but "Monkey Gone to Heaven" still gives a nostalgic chill, "Debaser" and "Here Comes Your Man" are chiming fun and "Gouge Away" a cleansing churn to finish it off.
A really foundational album. It’s everything I love about grunge especially the way it doesn’t take itself too seriously. You can totally hear their influence on much later bands like grouplove. It’s very easy to listen to & fun all the while

An excellent follow-up to an excellent debut. I might prefer “Surfer Rosa” on a gut level but they’re very close. On some songs the band sounds like they recorded the songs before perfecting and polishing them too much, so they still have an unpredictable energy. The bass is great and drives the tone towards slightly menacing territory - so distinct, very Pixies. “Here Comes Your Man” is a personal favorite that I used to listen to on repeat in college.

Really enjoyed this! This list has made me into a Pixies fan as I never really listened to them much. The vocals are so straightforward (that sounds like a dig but I swear it's not!) and approachable. I love "Here Comes Your Man" and I thought it was like a 50s cover song but it's not!
It's obvious how the band and this album influenced Nirvana and Jane's Addiction. When I first put the album on, it was like I had found the missing piece to the puzzle. Because those other albums don't just suddenly appear. There has to be some evolution, right? So, what about this album? Wikipedia said that NME writers voted it the second greatest album of all time. Now that's REALLY pushing it. I thought it was good. The songs were short and to the point. "Hey" was... um, yeah. Definitely made me want to hear more, which is a good thing.
I really took a liking to Surfer Rosa and thought I might rate this one even higher given its well known songs. But after Debaser (so grungy), Wave of Mutilation (a great, great song), Here Comes Your Man (a fun one to learn on guitar), and Monkey Gone to Heaven (never really my fave) the album is a bit uneven. Up to that point in the album it has a real edgy, grungy sound (Tame and I Bleed fit well in the first half but not sure how well they stand alone). From there I find some of the songs a little weird (Crackity Jones, La La Love You, Hey, Silver). Still even in those songs you hear some great guitar riffs and rock beats. And in others on the back half they do it almost as well as the first half (No 13 Baby, There Goes My Gun, Gouge Away), reminding you why they were so important to the transition from 80s to 90s rock.
Rocking album. One of my favorite things about it is that it came out in the 1980s but doesn’t sound like an 80s album at all except for maybe the Sonic Youth influence on it. Listening to this you can hear just how many albums have been influenced by it. The guitar on “Monkey’s Gone to Heaven” reminds me of a track on The Bends. “No 13 Baby” has some of my favorite guitar and least favorite vocals on the album. I think the dichotomy there actually makes me like the track even more. I tried to listen to this album years back and it didn’t do much for me but this time around I loved it. Looking forward to checking out more of their stuff. Pixies, you get a solid 4!
On their second album the Pixies continued to be ahead of their time - so much of grunge can be traced back to their songs. I personally preferred their debut Surfer Rosa - I felt it had stronger individual songs and also a harder edge. This album is definitely a 4 though - a really good album that I'd like to keep listening to. I haven't rated the Pixies a 5 mainly because there's always a little too much screaming and feedback, but not so much for me to dislike it. I will definitely keep listening to both these albums and plan to dig into more of their discography. Favorite tracks - Wave of Mutilation, I Bleed, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Mr. Grieves, No. 13 Baby, and Gouge Away.

The pixies at their best
Surprisingly nice album! Some of the songs felt like fillers with no emotions, but all the rest, with Hey at the top were really good. The album was a sweet mix of pop and rock, with some heavy moments in between. Catchy tunes plus some interesting vocal options. I will definitely come back to this album once again, probably sooner than later.

Unique, a lot of sounds I still hear in music today. A little chaotic at times which makes it a bit hard to listen to continually at times, but still worth the listen.

Already love this album. Pixies are right up my ally of melodic punk. Very raw yet tight at the same time. Nothing beats Black Francis screeching hand in hand with the gentle back vocals of Paz.

Solid punk sound
Just an amazingly good album. I only have 3 Pixies albums which just does not seem right because I still love all three. Surfer Rosa does seem to get the greater share of my listening time among the three, but this listen reminded me that Doolittle deserves much more of my attention than it's been getting. I think it is the stronger album over all. The production gives Kim Deal's bass the space it deserves moreso than on Surfer Rosa. A word about Kim who I think is The Pixies MVP. I absolutely love the tone of her bass and her playing is so clean and distinctive and underpins the Pixies sound perfectly. I've never really heard another bass player like her and Doolittle hilights this beautifully. Side one is nearly perfect and has the hits. Side 2 has the lesser known songs and may not get the love it deserves but by ending with Gouge Away it peaks at the end. An easy 5 star pick for me.

I'm left a little perplexed by Doolittle. There are great surf flourishes, and obviously a lot of space within the music from which to love it. The poppiness is just a clear a line to grunge as was advertised, though the Pixies lay down more musical material than your average album in that vein. But many songs feel like they could use thirty more seconds or one additional instrument, and, space or no space, that makes me hedgy.
A masterpiece. One of the albums that definitely changed my view on rock music. Definitely one of my top 10 albums of all time. If you don't like (or at least appreciate) this album, we probably don't share music tastes. 10/10
I had no idea I was a Pixies fan until embarking on this project. It's been a pleasant discovery. I was always aware of them and enjoyed ther more popular songs I had heard, but had enever delved deeper into album tracks. I'm not sure why. I'm glad it's being thrust upon me now.
Starts off with the lead singer just screaming. What an immediate turnoff. Then it's whispers to screams to whispers to screams... Until the third song, I wasn't sure if they were aware there is a section in the middle of those two extremes where better music tends to be. The album is at its best when it calms down, which isn't nearly often enough.

One of my acquaintances in high school would give me the nickname 'Pixies' because of my love of this band at the time. So you can easily imagine how close to my heart this legendary record is. Probably in my top five list of all-time favorites... But reading the reviews from this group, it seems I'm far from being the only one to find this album so frigging good. Black Francis' muscled-yet-sugary pop chops, his geeky pot-pourri of surrealism conniving with references going from the bible to sci-fi, both of them mating with teenage angst--not to forget his stellar choruses and his mock-hardcore punk growls--along with Kim Deal's velvety background vocals or plucky basslines, Joey Santiago's forays into surf rock or jangle indie, and David Lovering's gated drums with a very retro (?) sound, (thanks to producer Gil Norton)--all of this makes it one for the ages, a record that's both adventurous and terrifically cohesive overall, both totally indiosyncratic and immediately catchy and hummable. A masterpiece. But what struck me the most reading all those reviews here, is the sheer number of *first-timers* telling how hard this record slapped them in the face, so to speak. Some of those first-timers already knew a few indie hits like "Wave Of Mutilation" or "Monkey Gone To Heaven" , but they couldn't anticipate how good everything else would be, from "Debaser"'s soaring introductory bassline to "Gouge Away'"s alternate use of minor and major chords to conclude the album on an ominous and surprisingly somber note. Commentators and reviewers have also rightly pointed out how important this album was for rock in general, with its quiet-loud-quiet dynamics foretelling the "alternative" explosion of the nineties of years later. But as Kurt Cobain knew himself--and this, probably at the very same time he confessed having 'ripped off' Pixies for "Smells Like Teen Spirit"--all of this wouldn't be worth a rat'a ass if the *songs* had not been so good. And personal. And hummable and weird and strange and funny and dark and twisted and light-hearted and wonderful. It takes a genius songwriter to recognize the genius of one of his peers. And this is what Doolittle is: pure genius. I am thoroughly obsessed with this album I first got into this album when I was about 17 and it felt incredibly cathartic during an absolute shitshow time in my life, so it will always be special to me for that. And it's never grown old!!! Despite the darkness and weirdness of some of the lyrics, screaming along to them will always give me a big serotonin boost Its just so bloody good and an easy 5/5 for me Fave bits: literally all of it? Okay maybe the bit in Gouge Away when he screams "I break the WAAAAAAALLS"
Great fun listening to this one, brought up lots of road trip memories with Chloe. Debaser is an epic unhinged start to the album, hooked me straight away, then the album just goes from bop to chaotic bop.

This is honestly a great album. Not something I thought I would be into but I was pleasantly surprised while listening to it. A solid album, maybe I should listen to some of Pixies’ other work.
I was ready to love this based off the singles but it’s too punk for me. I like a lot of the elements- thumping bass; surf guitar; interesting backing vocals; but the over all impression is shrill, shrieky and a bit angsty. If I was born in a different place at a different time I can imagine I’d love it.
Quiet loud quiet loud - awesome alternative rock. Weird as hell lyrics, but this was surely the future of rock, Americana, and new wave post punk back in the late 80s? Loved seeing them back together at Brixton Academy in the early 2000s before Kim left. No disappointment even if Kim and Charles weren't talking to each other! Doolittle is still a great listen.
Almost a 5. It just has 2 or 3 tracks that I don't really vibe with, but otherwise Doolittle is a killer album with some timeless classics. The lyrics are really interesting, the sound is instantly identifiable. Love this

Just wasn't into them at the time but this was justifiably popular then and now. Great sound- almost retro and great energy paving the way for many bands afterwards. They blend all kinds of sounds into a cohesive whole and all the time it's never dull or repetitive. It either works or doesn't at all. For me it's 5*****

What's not to love. Black Francis spirits and screaming out these strange stories, backed by that solid rhythm. But the thing that takes it next level is Joey Santiago's sonic wails, they just accentuate everything. Here Comes Your Man is great pop, written by Francis when he was 15.

This album did little for me at the time, as it seemed a bit of a let-down and a re-tread after their debut. Listening to it now the well-known tracks sound great. Some great tunes and I love the energy. It flagged a bit in the middle, with whatever the cost-reggae intro track was, but overall I enjoyed this a lot more than I did at the time. 3.5 stars.
A magnificent album that somehow managed to push through to the mainstream. Who knew that tales of messy sex, chopping up body parts and dead monkeys would be so popular? Everything is perfect about Doolittle; the songs, the musicianship, the production. Kim Deal's bass is an absolute beast and holds it all together. Note how the quiet, loud, quiet thing predates Nirvana by a couple of years. One of the few albums that I could play on rotation and not get bored.

At their height, this is such a great end to end listen, almost a concept album but with several stand-out tracks. Hearing it again, it’s still fantastic, such crisp production, moving between silences and wall of sound
This has all the annoying trappings of non-Seattle alternative: it rips off a random Stooges song (I hate the Stooges), adds fuzzy guitars (probably telecaster/vox combos ew), simple marching beat-style drums (awful snare sound btw), the most toothless singing possible (even the screaming is wimpy) and coats it all in shitty DIY garage band stylings. Plus the singer looks like that fat hairless creep from Little Britain. Overall it just gives off loser vibes - like the soundtrack to being bullied in high school or something. 2/5.

I really don’t like the singer which I couldn’t get passed. I found the vocals unlistenable at times, particularly in “Tame.” I liked “Here comes your man” but I already knew that one and think it sounded pretty different than everything else I heard on the album. There were a few others I liked, like “Hey” and “Mr. grieves” but overall was not a fan and wouldn’t choose to listen to this album again
Hard to revisit this one objectively. I remember purchasing this when it was first released and thinking this is the likely the best release of the year and one of the tops of the decade. Not much has dissuaded me that my initial impression was incorrect. I am a sucker for the combination of melodic pop and overlays of loud guitars. Add to it odd, cryptic lyrics and off kilter harmonies and I am sold.
I hear a direct line from this record to Cage the Elephant. Snappy post-punk rock. Melodic but rough at the same time with some slashing guitars.
Some of the rock and roll here was great but man the singers voice was sometimes insufferable. Here Comes Your Man outshines the rest of the album by far for me.

I've never actually listened to Doolittle before today and I feel like I've done myself an injustice. There is not one bad song on this album. Some great musicianship and sheer inventiveness in each song, everything sounds different and still balanced. Definitely going into the rotation!
Fucking strange, in a good way.
One of those bands, like Velvet Underground, that spurred thousands to form bands of their own. This album and the previous release Surfer Rosa were absolutely electrifying to me, as a young musician at this time.

I've listened to the Pixies before. They're just "okay" for me. I understand that they are influential but their music is dull to me. The album as a whole was good but the individual songs weren't memorable.

Seems like reluctant heroes to me. Goofy band that doesn't take themselves too seriously but it feels like they have something important to say. A lot of times the person who wants the job the most is least qualified, and the one who wants it least would be the best fit. The sarcastic class clown who actually makes a lot of rational sense when you listen and would have made a better class president than the overachiever or QB. That's the feeling I get about this album and The Pixies overall.
Love/Hate relationship with this one. So much musical potential then they start screaming and beating on their instruments. Poignant lyrically, with a lot of angst and political strife.

Hi-Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Crackity Jones Lo-Mr. Grieves Probably regarded as The Pixies most famous album (this reviewer prefers Trompe le Monde), it's wall-to-wall short and sweet bangers, packed to the gills with Frank Black and Kim Deal coolness, there really isn't a bad track in the bunch, maybe some that just aren't as good as others (Mr. Grieves), but nothing offensive and they're all short that by the time you might think of skipping a track, it's already over, with the longest cut clocking in just shy of 4 minutes. Unfortunately, that means the party is over all too quickly!
I've listened to this album a billion times and will listen to it a billion more. Don't waste your time reading this review. Listen to the music.
I have no idea how they do this. I've listened to this for a long time and love it. But if someone describes songs like Tame and Crackity Jones, you would think this is unlistenable. But the violent vocal delivery somehow fits and there is plenty of time for balance and melodies as well. It's an incredible album.

There's a fine distinction between landfill [insert genre] bands, and bands that sort through everyone else's trash to make something new and, hopefully, exciting. The Pixies are that distinction.

I didn’t expect to like this, but I really did.
I didn't think that I would be thrilled with this one and the first few tracks didn't disappoint me on that sentiment...I mean, fine, but not anything that pushes me to want to listen more. Then around track 4 I started to warm up just a bit. Then I recognized one of the tracks (La La Love You) from a mixtape I received in my younger days and got the warm fuzzies. That endeared the album to me more.
Didn't expect to like this one but I did. Probably not enough to listen often but good enough for today.
I had a group of friends in college who were really into Pixies. But at the time they never appealed to me. So I had an immediate negative reaction when I first saw this come up. Then I recalled that earlier in this project I fell in love with a Frank Black album. Maybe this won’t be so bad? I’m pleased to discover that I loved this album! The grungy/punky/surfy sound and dark themed surreal lyrics were very interesting to me. I saw it all more as paint brush strokes more than coherent stories I clearly understood. But I really like the songs painted on this album. Sometimes the cool kids are right! I have heard “Here Comes Your Man” before and really like this song. Other standouts: “Wave of Mutilation” and its crazy underwater references, “Monkey Gone To Heaven,” “Crackity Jones,” “La La Love You” (nice wolf whistle!), “No. 13 Baby,” “Hey,” and “Gouge Away.” I really enjoyed listening to this!
Debaser has me smiling this morning. This is a terrific thrash around punk album with great breakbeats, song structure, and a killer sense of song and album dynamics. Gouge Away leaves a yearning feeling in its wake.
I've never got into the Pixies. Nothing has ever grabbed my attention to make me want to. This was no different. I'll give it three though because I can't deny the huge impact they have made.

This album finds its way onto my rotation every few years. It's loud, dissonant, with some great melodies sprinkled in. It's like the band Television stopped practicing and playing long solos and the outcome was a rougher and cooler album. It sounds like a live album. Like you are watching them play on stage. No polish just raw music. It scratches a nostalgic itch really well and is fun, but I can't honestly say it holds up in today's world in any serious way. If it came out today I would not be sold. That being said it did come out in 1989 and was a real shake up, so for that reason it's an essential listen.

Doolittle is one of high water mark albums of Alternative music to have come out of the US in my lifetime. None of the songs outstay their welcome. a stoned classic
This is the first time I've listened to a Pixies album. Overall I enjoyed it. I preferred the poppier moments, so not sure I necessarily expect to love the rest of the back catalogue. When this is good, it's really good, but a little inconsistent. 3.5/5
Great album
I get it. But did very little for me.
I've still never intently listed to an entire Pixies record all the way through. Here goes... Yep, still can't stand that guys voice. Which is weird, because I'm totally cool with listening to the slacker vocals of Pavement. The music is cool ("Here comes my man" is great). In fact, when I was first starting my college band (Those Transatlantics), I remember a friend saying my guitars were like the Pixies. Huh. Had definitely never heard them at that point. Then, I joined a band (FAWNN) that arguably sounds like the Pixies in almost every way. Still didn't take the time to listen to the Pixies. Yeah yeah yeah, they're cool. And, I guess in some ways they represent a current of music that fed directly into the previous record (Hole's "Celebrity Skin"). So, for that, I'll give it a strong 3.
I always kinda hated on the Pixies, but I'm not sure why. It probably had more to do with me not really liking the people who liked the Pixies back in the day. But - they're pretty dope. The songs are "out there" enough while still being catchy in a weird way. Plus, I think their influence on a lot of the 90s-2000s bands that I dig is pretty obvious. I'm still not sure I'm a Pixies "fan" - but I respect them. And - I'm giving them a one-star bump for all the hate and shade I used to throw their way.
First time properly listening to the Pixies and I really enjoyed this.
I forgot how relatively mellow Pixies actually are compared to how I keep remembering them. I generally like them, and they clearly had some influence on later bands I like more. Doolittle dragged at parts, but overall pretty good.
Pleasantly surprised at the opening of this one. Great guitar-forward anthem style song from a band I always attributed to songs like "Here Comes Your Man," which happens to be on this album. Debaser is a solid rock song. Wave of Mutilation is a great song! After listening to "I Bleed," I think Weezer has some explaining to do about that Sweater Song. This is a surprisingly great album!

Really cool well crafted almost pop rock in parts, in other parts however its really erratic and jarring. It doesn’t linger on one musical style for long. There’s a huge contrast between light and dark, it shouldn’t work but it does. Intricate and interesting guitar work, gritty but jangly at the same time. And the combination of male/female vocal styles is also really well done. I cant quite put my finger on it but I like it. And I also don’t like it. But I also love it, It’s weird. 5/5 - A really interesting listen, way better than I thought it would be. Listened repeatedly for a few days
In yesterday's review of Jesus and Mary Chain I said they generated some excitement but not enough to get to the next level. This Pixes album has the level of excitement that JMC did not have. This album is also better than their first.
To help me decipher the lyrics to the first song, I tracked down the short film from 1929 it refers to, Un Chien Andalou, and watched it to the end, not deterred by the slitting eyeballs scene. This led me to looking for literary references in the other songs, and there are many, especially old testament references. This led me to reading the lyrics as I listened to every song and, on a few, visiting SongMeanings and reading the #1 most-liked interpretation. This, I think, would lead me to giving higher scores to most albums (excluding ACDC and the like). Musically, there's a chasm between the quasi-hardcore, less accessible songs and a handful of hits and pop-oriented tracks like La La Love You. I'm now convinced of the genius of Black Francis. Kim Deal is also talented, as is their singing drummer. And of course, the guitars are great. I deduct 1 point since I haven't done a full lyrical deep dive on the other 369 bands we've listened to.
Surfer Rosa was a fine debut album and they got even better with this their second. They released three solid singles from this album, and IMO Monkey is the best song in their canon. Unfortunately the rest of the album doesn’t live up to the same standard as the three singles so I “like” this album, which indicates a three star rating, but I don’t “love” it which would have bumped them up to four stars in my book.

Más allá de Here Comes Your Man el resto son bastante excéntricas, me llama la atención la estructura de las canciones pero a pesar de los riffs y los vocals que definitivamente son interesantes no me llega a cautivar. zum ersten mal ein pixies album ganz gehört. debaser catchy, erstaunlich voll produzierter sound, dafür dass sie die kings of alternative und indie sein sollen ein erstaunlich geschliffener sound. jetzt weiß man wo weezer abgeschaut haben, aber auch fucked up. probably nirvana irgendwie. whoa plötzlich tame - elektroschock für die gehörgänge. wave of mutilation mit dem geilsten Reim (mutilation - crustacean). kann ich glauben dass die den indie / grundge usw erfunden haben. kling auch immer bissl ironisch, sonic youth auf easy hörbar. so frühe 90er wie nur geht, obwohls aus den 80ern ist.

20th December 2021 Listened mainly while getting ready to leave Vancouver! Finished on the plane when landing in LA to come visit guy! Really great. Grungy, hardcore whilst being melodic and sensitive.
This is the album where it all came together for the Pixies; there expertise at going quiet-loud-quiet. Their expertise at churning beautiful pop melodies while maintaining their hard noisy edge. With songs like Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Here Comes Your Man and especially Gouge Away, The Pixies found the object blend of pop sensibilities and manic rock energy. A no brainer 5 star album.
Good but not great! Admittedly I was not the most focused while listening.
Hints of interesting stuff here, but the low-fi, scattered approach ends up detracting instead of adding. More focus would make this a much better album.

Two 5s in a row is a rare treat and a third this week to boot. Christmas has come early. I wonder what we'll get on Christmas day. It better be fitting for the occasion. I don't want to be sat around with my family listening to Sinead O'Connor, crying into my Christmas Pudding.
It's all the best bits of rock n' roll from 1960s surf rock to 1980s hardcore thrown together in a way that is completely and utterly unique to the Pixies. Well it was unique at the time, every man and his dog ripped off the simultaneously abrassive and catchy formula in the early 1990s (hello Kurt). Although no one, Nirvana included, got anywhere near the surrealist genius of Charles' lyrics. It's in my top 5 favourite albums of all time without a doubt.

This sounds just as amazing as when I was 15. I remember getting Doolittle and anything else on an indie label out of the library! I love Kim Deal’s backing vocals and the playing on it still sounds really exciting.
This was so fun to listen to, especially in the car on my way to work. I saw my life in the 90's run right by my eyes. I can definitely hear how this album influenced so much 90's music. Not only is my favorite song 'Hey,' but if I wrote a song, I might call it 'Hey.' ‘tame’- less kind to my ears first thing in the morning… ‘Wave of Mutilation’ on the other hand… ‘Here Comes your Man’ makes me feel nostalgic! It feels like pop- mind you, in the nineties I thought Radiohead was an appropriately jolly band to play at a party, so what do I know?! ‘monkey Gone to Heaven’- very familiar! And, one of the best songs about a monkey. ‘la la Love you’- I like the fact that there’s no ambiguity about the lyrics. I do love the noisy riffs, and tuneful melody combo.

Doolittle by Pixies (1989) One can explore these highly referential lyrics to discover their connections in literature, religion, and ecopolitics, but to what end? Lyricist Black Francis himself shook off notions of deep meaning in these references. His inspiration for the opening track “Debased” was “my stupid, pseudo-scholar, naive, enthusiast, avant-garde-ish, amateurish way” of viewing an early 20th century motion picture. And as to the chorus of the most popular song on the album. “I’m Your Man”, he says, “I don’t even know what that means”. So pardon us if we don’t care. This doesn’t rise to the level of surrealism. It is simply ham-fisted word smithery—jabberwockian without the euphony, syntax, and meter. Now the music, well, with a mix heavily dominated by inelegant bass-plucking and annoyingly intense backbeat snare, the limpid vocals and almost-tuned guitars are gratifyingly shoveled into a muddy background. The best way to listen to this record is with the volume turned down—to zero. 1/5

Not as excellent as their first two releases, from the perspective of a kid who got their first album when it came out at Newbury Comics and then hero-worshipped the graphic designers of 4AD, and who then got to see Throwing Muses opening for the Pixies at the Paradise, and felt goosebumps
2nd album is also one I'm intimately familiar with! Dunno the first time I actually listened through Doolittle, probably not that long ago actually. The big songs are all bangers and I like the less-popular tracks as well.
I've never played with the volume knob so much on one car trip, the volume differences within the same track is jarring throughout the album

This album is a little weird. I was not familiar with the Pixies before this album. Definitely does not have an 80s feel to it. This surprised me.
Let's be serious for a moment: there's a serious argument to be made that this is the best rock record of the 80s. Yes there were bigger sellers, and this isn't exactly adhering to any prominent "sound" of the decade, but for the level of influence this thing has had ON TOP of some of the best damn songs ever, you cant help but think, maybe. Probably, even!

TBH, I was probably the last to recognise this album’s greatness. At the time I used to think it paled in comparison with Guns N Roses. But it grew on me, eventually. And while not all of Doolittle is sweet, there are multiple tracks whose place in history has been cemented.

Friends much cooler than I forced the Pixies on me in high school. Hey was on a mixtape that has a very special place in my heart and I still listen to the playlist often. I love this album so much.
I've been hearing that this is almost universally beloved for a long time. Nice to finally make the time to listen. Considering how totally disappointing was Surfer Rosa, this is WAY better. A decent producer seems to make a big difference, and it sounds like someone made them rehearse everything at least a couple times. The sound of every instrument is vastly better. The subjects are weird and wonderful and make me think. It's still quite rough and grating, it's not love at first sight, but I'll definitely be able to give this a few more tries and I think it'll grow on me.
I quite like the fact that Ken Norton produced both The Pixies and Busted. (Wikipedia quite charmingly describes Busted a a punk band. O tempora, o mores...)

Heard this for the first time 15 years ago. Loved it then, love it now. Can understand why it’s an acquired taste though so 2s & 3s won’t surprise me.
Barring the couple of "hits", it's fairly weak.
Their high point, four or five classics and only the fact that it tails off a little towards the end stops it from getting five stars

Know this one well. Two Pixies albums in a row! Unlike Bossa Nova yesterday which I didn’t know well but thought had the same “vibe” but none of the tunes, this is an unequivocal start-to-finish classic that has been in permanent rotation since I first heard it 15 years ago.
So good. 9/10. Never listened to it all the way through before. Frantic, schizophrenic love songs. Unreal, loved it.
Great 1989 alternative music--a bit punk, a bit itself. From the first track I knew them. (Debaser). The hits on this album are "Here Comes Your Man" and "Hey"--I also liked Debaser, I Bleed, Monkey Gone to Heaven--and Silver. Gouge Away is good too.
Superb from start to finish.
Bossanova came up a few months ago, and even though the critics like Doolittle better, my preference is probably Bossanova. Some good songs on Doolittle, especially Here Comes Your Man and La La Love you. Otherwise, found this one to be just a little flat. 3.4/5
It was "Debaser" that instantly dragged me in. One of those songs that could wake the dead by introducing in stages its taut, hitting-every-quaver bassline, fizzing lead, frenzied tambourine, searing rhythm guitar, and the deranged vocal with its battle cry of "I am un... CHIEN Andalusia!" Perfection which I've been returning to again and again, until it became my most played song on Spotify in 2020. The rest either hooked me just as quickly (I'm a sucker for strong melodic refrains like "Here Comes Your Man" and "Wave of Mutilation"), took a while for me to warm up to (the long cascading outro of "No 13 Baby", the slow burn of "Hey") or is still something I struggle with (the abrasive screaming all over "Tame", the tuneless chaos of "Dead"). The record strikes a great run in its mid section, filling up most of the second half with great variety, before sadly ending on a fairly shrugging note with "Silver" and "Gouge Away". Honourable mention to the underrated gem "Mr Grieves", one of my favourites for the way it restlessly jumps around in tempo and rhythm. On a first listen this would have been a 3*. It's now pushing 5, but to be fairer on some of the ones I'm hearing for the first time I'm rounding out to a 4.

This was close to getting the 5th star. I remember listening to this album in 1990 at band camp. Then, maybe 6 or so years later hearing singles from it on the radio like it was something new. Such a good album.
Fresh! Better than i thought it would be
I've heard most of the songs off of here, but I don't know that I've ever listened to this album before. So much of what would happen in rock in the 90s is presaged here, and yet this album doesn't sound dated. The sound quality could be a little better, as it sounds a bit lofi at times, but overall it's a really groundbreaking album with no obvious flaws 4/5
