Nice first pick, obviously an awesome album.
Tricky, I get it, I like it, 3, no… wait, I love it, wait again, do I? Yes. 4. Can’t seem to give it a 5… could it be possible that I’m not cool enough?!
Ha ha
Wait again again, way better LOUD, at volume 11, or on the swanky headphones.
Possibly 4.5 if I could.
Before listening, nostalgia was telling me 4 or 5 star album.
With fresh ears I struggled to get through it in one sitting.
Some good songs, not a strong album.
Hasn’t aged well.
Original 1970(!) LP track listing is great - 5 star, love the live sound, play it LOUD
Side one
"Young Man Blues" (Mose Allison) – 4:52
"Substitute" – 2:23
"Summertime Blues" (Jerry Capehart, Eddie Cochran) – 3:27
"Shakin' All Over" (Johnny Kidd) – 4:24
Side two
"My Generation" – 14:47
"Magic Bus" – 7:50
Later expanded, then deluxe reissues get overwhelming, too much of a good thing, don’t bite off more than you can chew - 4/3 star
Not sure which album we are meant to be rating, I’m going with the original.
Possibly a 4, if I listened more.
You want to hate it, but you can’t.
So crap it’s good.
Feels like a trip to the theatre and a day at a theme park at the same time. Unique, fast moving fun, surprisingly easy album to get through in one sitting.
It’ll soon be gone, gone, gone… and you had a great time.
Why did the bongo player go to jail?
Because he couldn’t stop beating one out.
I like it… for a bit, but that is a very hard album to get through. Incredible amount of bongo.
A couple of 4 or possibly 5 star tracks on their own, but as an album as a whole, not great.
If I hear any more bongo this week, I think I’ll vomit.
Hmmm, tricky.
Meagre 3 or generous 4?
3.5 really, very much depends if I feel like listening to it…
A reminder that 1001 albums is a LOT of albums and it would be impossible to like all of them.
Still confused by Zappa.
Am I wasting his time or is he wasting mine?!
Would he have been a court jester in another era?
I still manage to listen to his albums all the way through though.
Same for all Zappa albums for me.
Zappa, in another life choose great musician, not mediocre comedian/musician!
I suppose somebody had to inspire Weird Al, I hope that isn’t on this list.
OK with a Sunday morning hangover.
mY bLEEDING vESTIBULAR
At first, I thought my hifi was broken, then after checking, I realised it must be their instruments or the recording studio.
Resonates all wrong with me, uncomfortable listening, almost like bad ASMR… is that a thing? Is that the point?
Heart says more but, sorry Elvis, head says 3.
Apart from the 2 obvious great tracks, the rest is big production average country.
A 1 to 2 star album with a very long 5 star song in it = a generous 2 stars
4.2
…F* it. First edit. After listening to it (possibly more than) 6 times in the last 24 hours, and non-stop reminiscing and recommending to everyone I have spoken to, it’s got to be a 5.
Some great tracks, I struggle with the whole album though
Definitely a desert island disc 🏝️
Solid album and Guy Garvey seems like a lovely chap.
Better than The Pixies?… 😬
Would possibly make it to a 4 if it wasn’t over an hour long.
3.5 in my other app
A 35 minute long perfect storm of live fun.
The King is on it, the backing band is sharp, the crowd are having a great time.
I need THIS blues on my island.
April 1989!
No Coldcut… no Paul’s Boutique? Could that be a thing? 🤔 Start of a genre? Sampling Pioneers?
4.5
Imagine if the Black Keys were from Africa, and better.
There’s a few bangers, there’s more not-bangers
Note to self:
1 star = Rated, but shouldn’t exist, a waste of studio time, imo
2 star = Not good
3 star = Ok/Good
4 star = Great
5 star = Desert island disc, there shouldn’t be too many of these!
Perfect album length for me around 40mins, if over an hour long it has to be a truly awesome album for me not to subtract a star.
Tricky. Why do I feel conflicted?!
As an album listening experience, not quite a 3 I’m afraid.
Sounds lovely, content ok/good-ish
3.5 really I suppose
I tried extremely hard to listen to this album without nostalgia creeping in, but difficult.
Truly is a great original album though, one that I seem able to listen to in its entirety any time it’s on barely skipping any tracks.
If you have hatred for Bono/U2 (…?), forget about that, and just listen.
Not quite a 5 though.
I think it will be 4.5 in my main app.
Good… want to like it more, but it exhausts me a bit. Shame.
3.5ish?
…it made me come back for more… 4
Hit me on the right day.
Couldn’t stop listening.
Loved it.
Country from way back, before country went proper shit.
Original gangsta rap?
4.75
Overrated with a couple of ok songs.
2.5
Easy 5, obvs… even taking into account that ‘Yellow Submarine’ doesn’t quite fit this album. I’ve always thought it was an odd addition to the track list.
‘Here, There and Everywhere’ was our wedding song 😍
🏝️
Weird, I like it, I don’t like it, I want to like it more.
Probably too many oooOOOooos for 58 minutes
Hmmm… want to like it more, but not convinced.
Sounds nice, really well produced, but is it missing IT?
Have listened before, but have never rushed back.
3.5? Yes, 3.5 in Roon, don’t want to risk losing it forever.
Generous 4?
Probably 3.5 on another day.
29mins long is good though.
Could be a 4.5, I reserve the right to take it to the island. 🏝️
Brit answer to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot?
3.5
Some good songs, some ok songs, some shit songs.
Impossible for me to listen to as an album without skipping tracks.
Probably some 3 star, possibly 4 star parts to this, but, as an album, I will never, ever be able to listen to 1hr16mins of this without skipping or taking a break.
Obviously a couple of decent tunes, though I may have dropped off, could be useful for future nap times.
2.5, her other album with the extremely long title is better, a couple of good original tunes here though.
Quite a few bangers on here
For me, a 3 star means OK/Good.
Not offensive, but as an album to session in one sitting, not quite a 3.
Have listened twice now, no need to listen again.
At least four 4 star songs, but to listen to as an album… nope
I probably would’ve loved this when it came out, why didn’t I hear it?!
It’s a solid 3 now though.
I tried to mark down to 4 (or 4.5) to differentiate from other Beatles albums and also to not look like a complete fan boy.
But, I can’t, I know it inside out… 30 minutes of pure classic early Beatles bliss.
4.5. Not as good as LZ IV
A >4 star album with at least three 5 star songs.
A bit better than the other one, but still a 3
<3 and i don’t mean I love it. A couple of OK songs that I could happily live without
Some good musical moments, but on most tracks there is not enough and too much going on at the same time(?).
Am I likely to listen to this album all the way through again? Probably not, but 2 stars feels too harsh.
I’m obviously not cool enough, soz.
Gonna rate as 2 separate albums.
Abattoir Blues: 4
The Lyre of Orpheus: 3.5
I think this is a grower, will hopefully develop from a 3 to a 4
Not bad, some interesting stuff on there.
Too long though.
3.5
Always had a love/hate with this one, some good tunes, but I think I would prefer to listen to the War of the Worlds audiobook.
Tricky, would probably score higher as an instrumental, and I’m not particularly fond of instrumentals. Contains the real Real Slim Shady?
I dunno… 3.5?
Tricky, some great bits, a lot of silly bits.
3.5
1 banger, a couple of good songs, the rest for me is filler.
3.5
Some good songs. Whole album is an effort.
4+ but rating it 5 to drag the average up. Average rating under 3?! Come on guys.
Some reviewers must be dead behind the ears.
3.5ish.
This album is so samey that it sounds like one long track, sung by Kermit the Frog.
