Clube Da Esquina by Milton Nascimento
Aug 25 2025

One track has a dude in my right ear doing the rhythm with his mouth. Definitely listen with headphones as they make use of the different sides. I don’t speak this language so I don’t know what they’re saying except when they mention arms or now and stuff like that. Didn’t expect the electric guitar on the later track. Second to last track best guess translation is Nothing Will Be The Same As Before. The tempo on these songs was all more mellow than I expected but honestly I had no right to expect anything. Overall, I never would have listened to this otherwise and am quite glad I did. I listened while walking around a sculpture garden and park on an art walk and it meshed perfectly.

Africa Brasil by Jorge Ben Jor

So, this is only my second album on this journey and also the second Brazilian one. I was looking forward to expanding my repertoire but at first I was worried I checked the wrong setting or something. There's a very funk vibe. Another album for listening with headphones due to the use of the different channels. I think I hear an organ or electric piano in the right channel on track two. Rhythm egg/maraca or some such and a bunch of instruments I am unqualified to identify but which are not the standard guitar/drum/bass. Okay, now I finished the album and I liked it okay. It's not my cuppa but I can get behind some of it.

Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz

Okay, day three of this journey and again Brazil! No complaints, though, I am into a bossa nova and according to Wikipedia this is THE bossa nova album. Heck, it even starts with the Girl from Ipanema. Once again, listen with headphones to get the full enjoyment of the different channels. And now there's So Danço Samba, so I know two of these tracks already which is a comfort. Overall, very mellow, very groovy, and a good listen.

Aug 28 2025

My first English album on this journey. There's parenthesis in the title of the album but the title of the song is just Morning Glory, even though it could totally have the parenthesis. Also, it should be (What’s the Story), Morning Glory, no? Tracks I already knew: Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back in Anger, Champagne Supernova. Track I didn’t know but kinda dug: Hey Now! The musicality can be “simple” but I don’t mean that in a pejorative sense. This is 1995 so I don’t know if it fits in the rock revival. Thinking of the album in context I wonder if it wasn’t different enough from what was going on or distanced enough from the basic rock most of the tracks exemplify. Naturally, there are a few tracks on here that are much more complex and with higher production levels which stand out, which would have been obvious at the time.

The Doors by The Doors

They came right out of the gate with this one! I’m not the world’s biggest The Doors fan but I really dug this album and had a great time listening.

Another Green World by Brian Eno
Sep 03 2025

Experimental, and I mean that in a good way. I found there weren't enough tracks for me to hang my hat on to really be into this album but I liked some of what he was doing and respect the innovation.

Raw Like Sushi by Neneh Cherry

Late 80's rap/hip-hop and it scratches (no pun intended) a very particular itch.

Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones
Sep 06 2025

I think I've said before I've basically heard enough Rolling Stones. I'm good. This isn't painful or anything, though. Not like Oasis or Coldplay. This is another example of a band doing just a really good job at the thing they've decided to do and then where I meet them is at the juncture of what they've decided to do and whether I enjoy that thing. Also that thing is co-opting.

With my limited experience, listening to this album is like, "What if there were an alternate reality where Dire Straits sang more than just Sultans of Swing?"

I may understand jazz better if I knew the rules. And if you're going to say, "There are no rules," then I will tip my cap and say good day to jazz, perhaps. I don't think I'm qualified to listen to a 26-minute song the way I'm supposed to. Bitches Brew is a funny title, though.
