Decent sounding arena rock but does little to shake up what I feel like has always been a fairly boring genre

Not bad at all, but unlike U2 the other day, I don’t think enough time has elapsed between the seventy zillion times I’ve heard these songs. Impressive that pretty much all of these are (over) played on the radio and they are incredibly catchy.
I knew the hits off this and knew about the album. I wasn’t excited to listen. Mostly unremarkable/bad, but some cool guitar playing. Not my type of music, and by the end of it, I was ready for it to be over.

Ahhhh Boston... Looking at the tracklist, this song is more radio hits than not. I mean, hell, the first 5 songs make up a considerably portion of the rotation at any classic rock station. I'm mixed on Boston. Growing up my dad used to use it to torture my mom on long car rides. Objectively, I don't think they made great music, but they made some decent sounds and I understand the widespread appeal. For me they get lumped into a category with Foreigner as sort of generic dad classic rock that is made for blasting in your garage while you work on restoring your 70's muscle car and recount stories of former glory. More Than a Feeling is an okay song. I don't love it... its just kind of meh and doesn't go anywhere. Peace of Mind I like a bit more just because the guitar work is a bit more dynamic. This seems like a good one to roll a doobie to. Foreplay / Long Time is the quintessential Boston jam. I won't take anything from this one. I used to get hyped to this song and still enjoy it. I think Smokin' might be my favorite of the hits on this album after Foreplay / Long Time. This album almost captures a particular era in rock n' roll in a nutshell. This is about as inoffensive of rock music as there can be. Lump this into a mixtape with Foreigner and Journey, and go to town. I am about as unexcited coming out as I expected to be going in. This is a 2 / 5 from me.
2-2.5 started with a bang but the rest doesn’t compare. Foreplay/longtime also deserves a mention

I primarily know this as the arena-rock radio hegemon against which the amazing music of the late 70s defined itself. I certainly didn't need to hear these songs 8000 times and ambiently absorb 40% of the lyrics and its hard not to hold that against them. Not an album of subtle pleasures, this is the corniest rock imaginable. But, Boston, "there is something about you," and somehow I find myself begrudingly enjoying this fun anthemic and melodic album. The guitar tone is the star here - overdriven, over-dubbed, and over the top. And yet, I really am in no rush for the 8002nd time hearing this. Favorite: Hitch a Ride
Album starts at a 5 and then loses its stars quickly. Never thought of Boston as the bridge between classic rock and new wave but I heard that here, which was cool. Really I never thought much of Boston other than that band with those songs from commercials. Don't think much more of them now. The hoo-rah classic rock moments like singing about being in a band and dubbing an annoyingly "epic" organ solo as "Foreplay" in the year 1976 when such stylings should have very much already been on the been-there-done-that out and out is just annoying. I skipped a lot of songs near the end.

I could have played More Than a Feeling and left it at that. 'Cos that's Boston's career, right? Boston sound like a band from the fag end of the 60's that didn't quite grasp the new. This limps along after the opener. One extra star for More Than a Feeling.

Solid classic rock album
I like the story behind this: the MIT graduate working for Polaroid while be plays bars at night and shops around his future platinum-selling songs to record companies, who all reject him; his pursuit of writing the prefect song; auditioning many singers until he found one who could deliver the goods. And More Than a Feeling could be the perfect pop-metal song. I remember when I first hear it thinking 1) how much I hated it and 2) how big a hit it would probably become with its cliched riffs and vocals. Side 1 is interesting for historical reasons. Side 2 is pretty bad.
How good is More Than a Feeling? It’s almost one of those rare breed of songs that transcend time. I also like how the album cover always reminded me of the cover art for the Atari 2600 version of Space Invaders. Alas, the rest of the album is rather mundane and not worth listening to, especially these days.
2 decent tracks
There's a reason most people have never heard, or heard of, any track on this album apart from 'More Than a Feeling'. Any album that leads with a 'signature track' which showcases everything that's bad about 1970's American stadium rock & goes downhill from there is likely to be a tough old listen, & so it was.
I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ hadn’t softened me up to ‘More Than A Feeling’ and Girl Talk hadn’t softened me up to ‘Foreplay / Long Time’ by overlaying a Southern rapper (Ludacris, I believe) over a portion of it. But dammit this is still clinically constructed bullshit. I’ll take The Cars as my power pop innovators of choice, they never had the dissonance of claiming to be wild while sounding precise.

The backstory behind the album is a lot more interesting than the music within. 2 cut-off arm sleeves turned into headbands out of 5.
I'll never forget that random YouTube comment I once read about the man whose wife was dying in hospital. Her name was Marianne, and he would sit by her bedside every day and hold her hand. One day he was just too tired to stay awake, so he closed his eyes for a nap, and during that time, Marianne slipped away. Fiction or no, that's a beautiful, heartbreaking story. The rest of the album is pedestrian get-down rock-out af. Looks like they accidentally criticalled on their songwriting check with the first track. I went and took a dump in the middle of the last song. Not sure if it was just coincidence or if the song filled me with the urge to defecate.

Some recognizable songs but this album as a whole is so one-note. It's only 8 songs long and it reuses melodies constantly. Kind of a dud to me
The major hit More Than A Feeling and two songs after (Peace Of Mind and Foreplay / Long Time) are really quite good. Everything after that is decidedly mediocre. The production on this album is really quite good, especially for the time. They seem to have been able to get this full bodied sound, where a lot of their contemporaries struggled.
Horribly cheesy 70s American rock. Doesn't do a whole lot for me.
If this album is on this list, why not include Journey or Europe in it while you're at it? I mean... "Don't Stop Believin'" and "The Final Countdown" are catchier than anything on Boston's first LP, aren't they? Oh, no, cheesy dad rock fans might argue, no, no, noooooooo, Boston wrote and performed better songs. Well, did they? Let's break this mothership down track by track : More Than A Feeling: yep, OK, it's got a nice chorus, cool T-Rex-like handclappings and great guitar parts (rhythm and solo) going for it. I can't help feeling that what's good in the song was already a little dated in 1976, but who cares about that now? A convincing opener overall. 4/5 Peace Of Mind : I like the lyrics on this one, something about a dude stuck in a company on a lowlevel position knowing there's more to life than corporate competition (Tom Scholz worked for Polaroid on such a job before his rock dream came true). Yet harmonically speaking the whole thing's a little bland. Only the end is really worth it, with that guitar riff followed by those fifth (or third?) harmony overdubbed solos. But that moment is way too short. 2.5/5 Foreplay / Long Time : Maybe I was too hard when I gave that Genesis album a 2. That baroque, annoying rococo organ solo on the introduction of this song might have required some technical chops, yet it's still *very* embarrassing to listen to today. Not every prog-rock flourish from the 70s has aged gracefully, and here's a good example. What's also a bit daft is that when the song proper starts, it's a little too pedestrian melody and rhythm-wise to justify such delusions of grandeur before. By this point, the albums starts to feel very performative. "Takin' your time" doesn't mean *we* have to get lulled into sleep. The impressive vocal harmonies keep us awake, fortunately, and so do another instance of those T-Rex-like handclaps. Besides, the guitar solo at the end shreds hard, once again. But apart from that... 2, maybe 2.5/5 Rock and Roll: Excruciatingly boring song. As unoriginal as its title. Well, let me correct that: with a similar topic and title, Led Zeppelin knew how to create a visceral atmosphere, at least. Boston just can't: it's all very performative and there's nothing else to it. Fittingly, lyrics are uninteresting clichés, too. A dud. 0/5 Smokin': copy and paste the text up above and replace "rock'n'roll" with "rhythm'n blues" (quoted in the lyrics). 0/5 Hitch a Ride : Some Kinks-like flavours (circa Village Green Society) at the start of this one had raised my hopes a little... but no, false alarm, the same performative stuff occurs again and again after. And then, it becomes even worse than that! While I found them charming on the first side of this record, the T-Rex-like handclappings are now grating my ears as a cheap trick, I want to smash that organ into a thousand pieces (organ solos should be banned by the Geneva convention as weapons of mass destruction) and even the guitar solos make me want to roll my eyes right to the back of my head now. Jesus, this is SO cheesy!!!! 1/5 Something About You: A *very* "power pop" track. Which would be fine if the chords were just way more original. But maybe I'm too worn out by the barrage of bad taste before to care now... 1/5 Let Me Take You Home Tonight: Eagles territory. *yawn* 1/5 I can hear some folks going at me now: "but... but look at the technical wizardry! Scholz actually recorded most of this stuff in his basement!". Yeah, and? If it's to sound like something that was *not* recorded in a basement, why should I care if it was? "Lo-fi" recordings made decades later proved that they could have a charm on their own, far from any big studios artificial shenanigans. Maybe Scholz just missed the opportunity to be creative and fully ahead of the curve here, as good as he was technically speaking. In the end, imitating a big studio sound from a basement is nothing but this, a technical feat. It's not necessarily an *artistic* one. But look guys, the *real* problem here is not the sound, it's the songs: *all of them* on side 2 are just freaking AWFUL. And you *know it*, for chrissake! Some of those five-stars reviews up there even sneakily admit it. Well, why did you give this album five stars, then??? An album is not an E.P. It's not a single either. And a good one might have weaker spots here and there, yet it still needs to be cohesively good overall. I'm amazed at how many "perfect" reviews this record got on this app. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the nostalgia factor came into play. Here's the thing, however: sometimes oldies are NOT goldies. So, c'mon, guys, get a grip on yourself. I can understand and even respect 3 or 4-star assessments. But 5 is way too high! Maybe it's time for some dad rock fans to let go of their bad faith. Music is subjective and all, I know that. But it's no reason for some to be in denial. At least to this point. Oh, good. Irrelevant, overplayed 70s arena rock, one of the most tepid, unnecessary dalliances in the history of rock music. This album fails the "must hear before you die" test.

More than a feeling is certainly a banging tune!! I find the back-story so interesting on this album and I do love the glittery guitar solos, this guy is clearly a bit of a genius but he's too much of a perfectionist, the songs are so tight but I reckon it holds it back creatively. Parts of the album are boring towards the end.
Not sure if classic rock is based on Boston or vice versa, but seems pretty standard.
It took me over a year to finally convince myself to listen to this album because I knew what to expect from this album. I love rock, but Boston is definitely one of my least favorites from the genre. Fundamentally it's good music but for some reason it just dosen't click for me. Although I didn't like this album too much there were some good moments, like the solos. It was the only parts I really enjoyed and was pleasantly surprised how good they were. Apart from that, not my cup of tea

Like a joke in a bonbon to toss at Christmas, this starts off well, but gets old quick
I've actually not listened to this before (aside from the really famous songs everyone has heard obviously). It's very commercial sounding. The wikipedia article says it marks the point where rock shifted from blues-rock to power pop - totally agree with this. This album is probably one of the reasons why punk rock exists. It feels kind of generic to me actually - but that's probably more a reflection on me than the record. Overall, I can see why it's a popular record and can appreciate parts of that - but not for me.
Jackson said it sounded like I was listening to his mom’s playlist. An okay album for me. Nothing really stood out.

I really do not like this sanitised formulaic crap. However I’m a big fan of a Hammond organ, so Smokin’ would have earned it a 2nd. star. Then I heard the last track. Atrocious!

I quite enjoyed the opening two tracks- ‘More than a feeling’ and ‘piece of mind’ I felt like I was American, had big hair, a massive moustache and lived in the early 80s… Unfortunately part way through track 3 I realised I have and am none of those things! Disappointed Best track- ‘peace of mind’ Worst track- ‘let me take you home tonight’ 3/10

#371/1001. Coprolites are fossilized feces (from dinosaurs, mammals, etc.). When cut and polished they can show internal textures and sometimes mineralization that produces attractive patterns and a glossy finish. What else is this Boston album?

It might be a Canadian thing but when I hear “More Than A Feeling” the first thing I think of is how that song was used in commercials for the mediocre and bizarrely-named pizza chain Boston Pizza in the 90s. I’m not mad about it though, because this is music that seems like it was always destined for the suburban strip mall. There’s no sense of rebellion here, it’s rehearsing the motions but there’s nothing behind the slick production. It sold millions of copies, but of course it did.

- I don't find that this music has any soul... it's dad rock at its most dad rock. It's bland and overproduced. Just boring long guitar and keyboard riffs/solos that don't leave any emotional impact and lyrics and melodies that don't stick. Yeah, dude can play the guitar well, but it just isn't fun to listen to - it feels like he's showing off that he knows his scales and runs. - More than a Feeling is good, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the (boring) songs. Case in point - this album is from a well-known band made in 1976, and I'd only heard one song off of it (and wish it had stayed that way). - I'm not into the lead singer's voice, either - it feels strained and whiny/yelling. - This gets a 1 for leaving 0 impression except being bored and wanting it to be over. - Tom Scholz sounds like a controlling narcissist.

Does anyone like Boston? I know they’re big in America but I’ve never met a fan. Better than I expected, but I had very low expectations based on the hit. Which is clearly their only salvageable song. Every song overstays its welcome and has hideous unnecessary keyboard swoops and a braindead guitar sound. The singer is shrill. Two songs are especially egregious (Rock n Roll Band and Smokin) chugging ratatatat pub band blues rock with an expensive surface studio sheen. If I could give zero I would every day and twice on Sundays.

okay, i honestly gave this a good try. made it like 3 tracks in. but being the gen z'er that i am, it's quite difficult to listen to "dad rock" with an unbiased ear. i can't divorce it from the corniness i associate it with. boston was no exception -- nauseating late 70s bullshit. i would have committed to listening to the whole thing if i felt any confidence that my opinion would change even a little. sorry

Perfectly Smooth Rock Music. Very bland. No idea why this is on the list. This is my 2nd album and if this is the caliber of recommendation (already extremely widely known AND not very good) I doubt I'm making it through 1001.

"Rock and roll band, everybody's waitin' / Getting' crazy, anticipatin' / Love and music, play, play, play, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" And that's the lyrical depth you get with this album. I did not enjoy this. 37 minutes of tedious 70s American rock with beer breath and unwashed jeans. Utterly charmless and I'm not sure why this was included on this list of essential albums.

Joyless pap. Micromanaged to within an inch of its life with all the rock, life and joy sucked out of it. Even steely Dan has joy. This is middle class, no culture white boy rock writ large.if the bland suburbs of middle America or Australia had a soundtrack to wallow in their mediocrity it’s this. If beige was music, it’s this. This is like going to a party where some bore is intent on telling you all about his obsession to the nth degree. Give me something I can dance to. Give me something that moves me. No wonder Maryanne walked away. I’m surprised she didn’t run and then get a restraining order. Give me the who, zeppelin, Springsteen, Tom petty, the kinks, Queen, or even Aerosmith. No wonder punk hit so hard. This is 1976, punk is 1977. Can we really be surprised? The pistols or The clash pee all over this. Let alone the ramones or Television. This album angers me. Tasteless White boys and music. Pah.

This is the Boston album by the band Boston. If you've heard a Boston song before, it's probably here. Full disclosure: I've never been a fan of Boston. I always associate them with being the band you would hear at local festivals rather than an actual big headliner. Re-listening to this album confirms it. I was bored with most of the songs. You'll know by the first song if you like Boston or not because all of their songs sound like it. You can safely stop after "More than a Feeling" (or skip it, because let's face it, it's the worst song on the album) and not miss anything. 'Favorite' Song: #5 Smokin' because that's what this album would be doing if I had a physical copy and tossed it into a fire. Recommend?: No.

Headbangingly dull.
Usian Bolt's entire career at the highest level can be boiled down into a little over 100 seconds - that's all it took him to win six Olympic medals. Boston's entire top-level career can be boiled down into the 205 seconds that is the radio edit of More Than A Feeling. And just like Bolt's attempts to turn pro football (training with Man United, embarrassing try-out matches with Australian teams), the rest of Boston's career is somewhat pointless and second rate. Really, the second track here makes a decent fist of retreading the formula but after that it's desperate stuff. Chugging seventies boogie with hackneyed lyrics about being in a rock and roll band, having hard times, making it big, wanting girls, absolutely nothing of note here.

It is what it is, and it's not for me.
This website sure is making me listen to the "classics" I've never had much exposure to so-called "dad rock" or "classic rock" so listening to this was like a whole new world. Unfortunately, this kind music is not to my taste whatsoever. It's not inherently bad, It's feel good music! Just not something I would play. Album cover is cool and reminded me of Parliament's "Mothership Connection" but I suppose any UFO themed cover could remind me of that. I will most likely not revisit.
