Reviews (page 14 of 15)

I would class myself as a classic rock listener but I never really got this album. For all it's pioneering of that area rock sound and the massive amount of airplay on American FM rock radio, More Than A Feeling is the only really memorable song. Maybe the polished production sort of polished the soul out of this album, probably why I never bought it back in '76.

I expected easy going ‘yacht rock’, so the proggy elements of Long Gone… were interesting, but overall, it didn’t do much for me. It kind of reminded me of Manic Street Preachers and I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. It probably sounds less dated today than it did twenty years ago - maybe I’ll listen again in twenty years’ time to see how it’s faring. Maybe I won’t.

Boring! There’s like two interesting tracks on here and they’re the first two. Sounds like the soundtrack to a shitty outdoor market in the north side of Chicago where they try and scam you into paying 10 dollars to enter. The story about how this album was made is very cool and Scholz is clearly a talented musician but the music is BORING!

Boston is kind of a fascinating case study to me. They are a band who was led, in part, by Tom Scholz, who was an absolute studio wizard who invented all sorts of pioneering recording techniques and home studio devices, however, what they used all this innovation for just doesn't feel like especially interesting music. Boston just kind of sounds like the cleanest, catchiest, most accessible arena rock possible, like this really feels like archetypal "dad rock" to me. And honestly, that audio engineering skill clearly went somewhere, this album does sound really good. Making an album sound this immaculately, spotlessly clean is no small feat, and even though I don't really like Boston, it's hard to argue that the work didn't pay off. Just about every song here was a hit on some level. A lot of them still get airplay on local classic rock stations across America (and beyond) to this day. And the songs are also there, like yeah, everything here kinda, sorta sounds the same, but every song does hit real arena rock highs. Depending on where you live, you would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't heard More Than A Feeling, it's just unbelievably catchy. Honestly, if you're into this, more power to you, because you are probably having more fun than me, just in general.

I can see how it influences a lot of modern music. Its not my vibe but its not bad.

I think there's a finite amount of Boston a person can listen to. I reached my limit in 1988.

Some class some ass

Boring.

I was willing to hear this out because it’s not immediately disgusting to me but then I realized that I was only two and a half songs into the album even though I felt like I’d been listening to it for at least half an hour. So actually maybe not.

Other than the first song this just isn't my vibe.

Classic rock, reminds me of listening to Petra. I like solos in general (although a bit cheesy) and the solos in Hitch a Ride, Foreplay/Long Time, and More Than a Feeling were amazing... a guilty pleasure. More Than a Feeling had iconic riffs, and definitely heard parts of this song before not realizing where they were from. Loved the intro to Foreplay/Long Time as well.

Ay, I'm reviewing here, pal. Get this shit out of my earholes. Okay, okay. A little harsh given that I've listened to a minute of this album. I just have no idea how to introduce my reviews when I have no familiarity with the subject matter in question. I'm sorry, municipality of Boston. That being said, I get the impression that Boston are a band who don't demand much research into their background or craft as musicians. Rather, they're more focused on delivering some feel-good, rockin' hard rock tunes of a hard variety, which I can respect. There are some good moments in here. "More Than a Feeling" is competent on the whole, with some very good performances and vocals - the growling guitar hook during the chorus is especially good. "Foreplay / Long Time" is another good tune with some more great guitar hooks. The song is way longer than it ever needed to be, though I'd be lying if I said that the length didn't give the music an epic component. The organ on "Smokin'" and a few of the other tracks is also quite good. A notable victory considering that I usually have very little interest in the instrument. Yet, many of the songs on this album fail to go the full mile for me - especially during the latter half of the album. I think many of the songs on this album are much longer than they needed to be. I'm undecided on the place that arena/hard rock albums have on this list. On one hand they're immensely popular and are representative of the time that they came from, but on the other hand I feel like the influence of this genre is minimal, with the sound being much more commercial than creative. I also don't think that hard rock bands are "iconic" in the same respect that other popular musicians are, which I think is largely owed to the lack of an image or persona that these acts have. Still, as an archetypical (and an admittedly competent) hard rock album, I still think that there's merit to the inclusion of this album. It was massively successful, after all.

Thought this would be a lock for a 1 for me. Expected to hate every song and ended up hating 1 or 2, being indifferent to 3 or 4, and slightly enjoying Hitch a Ride, Something About You, and Let Me Take You Home Tonight. It's almost like their sincerity and theater kid-ness won me over in the end. If they kept going and were even more kitsch they would probably end up in Thin Lizzy territory which is my favorite of these kinds of bands. Fav song: Hitch a Ride

Track 1 is a classic. The rest doesn't come close. Listening on phone speakers as we're away so probably not giving it the best platform.

Classic rock cliché monstrosity. Mostly, it’s pleasant and occasionally fun to listen to but the lyrics just fall so flat. Obviously there are guitar solos galore. Sometimes they even make up a centre motive of a song - see Hitch a Ride’s simultaneous lead guitar solo. Foreplay has got to be one of the most annoying intros ever. The one thing that is actually charming to the record is its proto power pop character in some of the songs (cf. Peace of Mind). Hitch a Ride is a song where the genres (classic rock and power pop elements) come together quite well. Overall, better to stomp your feet than to pay close attention to the tunes. Sometimes (of course, that’s my retrospective impression) the songs are just so boilerplate, it hurts (esp. rock’n’Roll Band). I feel like that the band didn’t have much to say at all. With 38 minutes, the record is still too long - it could have been trimmed and it would have probably ended up being a more concise and enjoyable experience - that holds especially true for the B-side.

Blah. I respect this album but it’s not my jam.

Perfectly fine 70s cheesy rock.

I'm not a big 80s rock guy. Or classic in general

More Than A Feeling is a true soaring classic but the rest of the album seemed samey FM rock.

OK, but showing its age

In the end…meh. Hilary got it: it’s aggressively fine

Dismayed that I know almost every song here. I guess my people do come from Boston

It was alright. Quite generic but fine enough for the era.

I knew 6 of the 8 songs on this album just from driving around for years with classic rock radio. Couldn't tell you song titles or that they were all by Boston though. It's fine? Just because I know these songs doesn't really make me want to listen to it all the time. The making of the album was an interesting story, but it's still just mid to late '70s arena rock and that's mostly a meh for me.

This album is by a band named Boston.

Sounded like an albun of terrible advert songs!

Hot like a cup of Malted Milk on a Sunday evening. Sexy like big pants and support stockings. Groovy like guttering.

Middle of the road dad rock. 2.5

Uninspired rock with lengthy 70's like solos.

Not for me.

Not a big fan, bit dad rock

Infuriatingly shallow and pretentious classic rock. I feel like the genre is too broad: Bands like The Beatles and Pink Floyd should not be categorized w/ this irritating bullshit.

Started of well then felt like every rock song that people ever tried to publish in the earth. For its time peehaps it was good but feels more or less outdated

As per usual with me and hard rock/AOR type things, I'm not exactly keen on this but it's not the worst I've heard in the genre, if anything it's carried by genuinely good performances and a fun sound, but I think I prefer it as a random song I hear when I go to the store than I do as a full album.

Hat mich bis auf den Klassiker nur wenig abgeholt

less than a feeling. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

I like that this was recorded in a home studio, but that’s about it. Not for me!!!

Wimp rock.

sounds like generic 80s rock, which I guess makes this ahead of its time because it released in 1976

More than a feeling is notable mostly for familiarity. On the whole the album is just full of wanky 70s rock which is arguably one of my my worst genres. Its close to being unbearable. 2.5 stars but not worthy to be upgraded to 3

Classic 70’s rock.

Incredible opening track but otherwise loud and boring. Would be a killer 45 of More Than A Feeling/Rock & Roll band.

I like more than a feeling, but found the rest too cheesy.

Generic as fuck but fine

i do not care for guitar solos

I feel more or less the same about this band as I do about the city of Boston.

Highlights Include: "Smokin'" Kind of boring unfortunately.

Painfully tedious listening. Some nice keyboards but god, this is the definition of soft rock in its most vanilla form.

La única canción memorable es la primera. La banda alcanzó su cima en la primera canción de su primer disco.

Boring.

- classicrock/ arena rock 70s vibes - catchty vocal melodies on "Rock & Roll band" - dont like the high screamy vocals too much - nice driving guitar riffs on "Smoking" - lot of close reverb on the vocals - gitarren solo manchmal ertränkt in vibrato in den bends - bisschen southern vibe auch ist irgendwie nicht so meins -

All the cheese and none of the fun of ELO

Better than expected...but expectations were low.

All a bit samey unfortunately.....

King of the dad records.

2.5 i get y people like it. People are lame

Kinda meh

Surely an album for lovers of hard rock. But me? I'm picky with my hard rock. I didn't care for this album

Meh not the biggest fan except for that one song

ah was sölli da sege isch das albumd alinghi? wells absolu ah mir verbigsleglet isch, so schnell dasis gar nöd fest bemerkt han abgseh vones paar wassersprützer wo vo windgushes ah mich anetreit worde sind ich weiss gar nöd was das für es genre isch, aber wemmer en ganze song drüber schribt wommer am bettle isch dasmer eh person zu sich hei neh chan (für was au immer) muesi leider sege: hey nei

Something is missing?

What makes this album an album that I need to listen to before I die is beyond me. It is neither good nor bad. It was just popular at its time I guess.

2 sterne

In one ear, out the other. It's just so boring.

Middle of the road.

Kann 'more than a feeling' nicht mehr hören. Ansonsten auch nichts besonderes.

Too much rock in this list

Clearly influential, but sounds cliche for it...

First time listening. Highlights: nah

Aw man I mean this just isn't music that aged well, at least not for me. There's some fun to be had, but really it just isn't anything special. Reminds me of old rock radio, and I think that's where it belongs.

Pretty interesting how I knew pretty much every single song from this album despite I've never sought it out - show's how popular and huge Boston was. Still, nothing remarkable for me - it's a good example of music that if it was on the radio, I wouldn't change the station. But I wouldn't really ever choose to listen to it

Surprised how many of these songs I knew just from radio play. It's fun stuff, nothing crazy.

Iron clad proof that I can appreciate the hell out of something without really liking it. Must have been a wild rode when this came out. All incredible songs and back to back to back is wild. Must have changed the game when it came out. BUT! not really my vibe. Just can't get down in a satisfying way to this stuff. Too soft.

Vanskelig å finne et album mer 2.5/5 enn dette

very fun glam rock, but not my thing

So this is what Bon Jovi sounds like to non-Bon Jovi fans, huh?

I thought it was very Hezzy music but I do like some of them. Wouldn’t listen myself

I will never be like “man, I want to listen to Boston today.”

Can’t do it

i understand it is both technically and commercially enormously successful but there is really not a single interesting thing about this album

Populist rock; empty energy.

Feels like a mean rating as I did like this album but I don’t see myself coming back to it. More Than A Feeling is a banger though obvs - was hoping for more forgotten big hitters on the album but didn’t get that.

I was feeling like it could be a 3 for the first couple of songs. But by the end, I was just ready to listen to something else. Nothing specific that I didn't like. I just didn't find much to enjoy after the first song.

When I was a kid first looking at records (but without the money to buy any), the the covers that caught my eye were Meatloafs's Bat Out of Hell and Boston S/T. Both cool covers on pretty average (but massively successful) albums. 40 years (and lots of record collecting later), I still don't own a copy of either, with no strong desire to do so. Once I actually heard them, I was like "meh". More Than A Feeling is a terrific single which I don't mind listening to when it comes on the radio. Big crunchy riffs, good hooks, soaring vocals and my favourite bit; the OTT pick slide leading into the chorus But the album overall is overproduced pap with nonsense lyrics and little to recommend. It's like flavour less Queen. And probably led to the fashion to over polish rock in the late 70s and 80s. A malignant influence but not hateful.

An all right album but I don't see much great stuff.

I get why people love this but I hate it. Points for banging keys 🎹

Fine. After the three singles, it's all bland rock. Sounds like Uncles Strong 4 to a light 4 Album cover 9/10 You went to your 9 class, went to the film production festival and hung out with Trent. You had him guess the top ten elephants

Shite but ‘More than feeling’ is a rasper

Wasn’t sure if I had listened to any of the songs on this album besides More Than a Feeling. They all sort of sound the same to me. Your typical classic rock album. I feel meh about it.

It's very mediocre and I'M SICK OF HEARING MORE THAN A FEELING!

it is there. it is not bad but it doesn’t have quite enough could i write poetry to this? n

Technically good, but not enough variety.

20240903 Boston – Boston 2/5 This album is the definition of Dad/Uncle Rock. A very 70’s sound, self-produced album, with an interesting story behind its creation, but nothing too memorable apart from the opener “More Than a Feeling”. It sounds kind of generic, like something created for the soundtrack of a coming-of-age or road trip movie at the time, and most of the songs are forgettable. One of the positives of the album are the guitars, very melodic and with interesting riffs and solos; and also, the atmospheric and epic landscapes created in some points on the, for the rest, very generic rock songs. An attempt was made in “Foreplay/Long Time” to create something more interesting, but on its 7:48 minutes it lacks depth, novelty. Again, very easy listening but plain album. Music perfect for a commercial. Favourite songs: More Than a Feeling, Foreplay/Long Time. Least favourite songs: Peace of Mind, Smokin’.

Nicht schlecht aber halt aus den 70er

No tan mal dad rock, aunque algo plano

Very dad rock. Nothing wrong with that it’s just not my thing. Except for the first song, their big hit, I found this pretty bland. 2/5

Listening to this makes me fe like I should be speeding down a road in a Camaro, hanging out the window and smoking a doobie. That is possibly neither good nor bad, but it is certainly not me.

Very samey

more than a feeling is great, the rest are okay

Once again, there's one stand out track, everything else is a bit less memorable

Un buen primer intento

Cheese

Good. Not stunning. Bored by middle.

I listened to this yesterday. Don’t remember a single thing.

The playing is quality, the production is great and the songs are basically all hits. That said, it all just sounds like stuff I don't like. Even the aforementioned great production doesn't fit my tastes at all. When I used to turn on the OG classic rock stations, I was looking for Zep, Floyd, Stones etc. I'd always turn the dial when shit like this came on. Hard to believe that so many of those "turn the dial" songs are from this record. P. S. "More Than a Feeling" cost this album a whole star on its own.

Nice classic rock album, still new to the era so find it a bit too crowded for my personal listening but will give it more listens in the future.

Eka biisu jees ja sit meh

Ah the cheese that is Boston. I have more than a feeling this gets no more than 2 stars from me.

eh, nothing really special besides the very famous single

Other than the one song, most everything on this album is pretty ho-hum.

Oh, this sounds like a band named after a place!

This just does not touch anything I want touched.

Listening to this turns me into a middle-aged American dad pumping his fists into the air to this and screaming "hell yeah, man" to every single guitar solo on this.

Ihan kovia melodioita, mutta tää ei oo kyllä mun juttu. More than a feeling, Smokin' ja Rock & Roll band kovia ralleja

generic 70s rock

Way overproduced.

Only know one song, maybe because I was 10 years old in 1976. More than a feeling. And some lovely covers of it. But it is a typical representative of its time. 👍🏻

Лучшая песня - More Than a Feeling.

Meh.. didn’t connect with this

1 good song, rest crap

More Than A Feeling bumps this to two stars, but this era of arena rock is so sanitary and boring.

Boring.

Boston is one of those weird bands where one guy is sorta the whole band, even though people associate bands with the lead singer — who in this case is just really a guy who can carry a tune better than the MIT nerd who wrote all the music and created all the tracks in his basement. Man, this stuff is slicker than cat shit on linoleum. There’s no real nutritional value … it’s basically the Hostess Twinkie of 70s anthem rock — just designed for mass consumption in some factory (in Boston) and then shipped out to fatten up a bunch of American teens. It’s a formula that’s been streamlined and repeated over and over. That doesn’t mean that Twinkies don’t taste good …

Still don't like rock

Appreciate the skill, but didn't land for me as an album.

The epitome of MOR, there's nothing inherently bad about this album. It's just dreadfully dull, I'm afraid.

some bangers, the B-side tracks have alot of similar motifs to the hits but aren't as good which make the m feel watered-down, lightweight 70s rock paved the way for hair metal. fav tracks: more than a feeling, peace of mind

I got bored. But I promise you that if any of these songs came on in the corner bar where I was knocking back beers with friends of a similar age to myself, three things would happen: 1. More than a few of us would end up singing along without realizing it. 2. All of us would make fun of each other for that. 3. Someone would snort beer through their nose. File under “music to accompany scenes of 70’s kids washing their car on the street or driveway, preferably an orange car. “ Alternately I could see it as a wide shot of 70’s American high school kids walking through doors at school. I imagine those kids got bored with this as well.

Other than the one song it was just a bit average. I felt like I was listening to a musical theatre soundtrack or something.

Love the album art. The music sounds nothing like it.

Not my cup of team, but some iconic songs for sure.

Sikke noget pik-rock. Ikke helt min vibe

Is it terrible? No. No songs made me actively want to skip them, but no songs made me want to listen to them either.

Very overplayed classic Rock station band. As a kid it was fun to jam to it on Guitar Hero, but now it's just old-guy rock n' roll.

You can't mistake Boston for anyone else, although the keyboard parts hint of an ELP influence. I appreciate the DIY effort of Tom Scholz, but the music itself is obnoxious, with throwaway lyrics. By the end of the eight tracks here, it all sounds the same.

I'll start with the positive: this album is an amazing technical achievement. Even with today's more sophisticated digital recording equipment, a producer would find it a challenge to match the quality and precision that Tom Schulz captured in his basement studio. That said, the music here is too smoothed out, too polished, and every song is in a happy major key. It's Lite Rock, and, after listening to "Boston", I long for the rough edges, the distorted guitars and screaming vocals, that I associate with Rock music.

Anthemic for sure, not sure it's particularly exciting. Look I didn't pay a lot of attention. Sorry Boston. Two and a half. Fave track: More than a Feeling

"gastropub" background music

OK - kinda like every song sounds similar though

This is pretty horrible. So bad it doesn't even become good. I did appreciate the church organs on Smokin' but would generally rather eat my foot than listen again.

This is one of those records where I knew every song off of it - simply through Classic Rock radio osmosis- without knowing they were all Boston songs. They all sound basically the same. No edge. Saccharine.

soulless americana although i guess some of it is kinda catchy

More than a feeling and a bunch of bullshit

“More Than a Feeling” is a banger but the rest of the album fell flat for me. Not my fave era of classic rock either.

Not my cup of tea in terms of genre, but interesting to hear other tracks by the band that I was unaware of.

Classic rock, really nothing special

All I can think off when I hear this type of music is ensembles of teenagers standing on stages, à la Glee or Pitch Perfect. It’s just a bit too MOR for me. I’m not sure that they were.as big in the UK or maybe flew outside my peripherary. Although ‘that obvious track’ has turned up on so many ads and soundtracks it’s now impossible to hear without it turning into an ear worm and overstaying its welcome. I am sorry for their tortured history though. I’m not sure the longevity or legacy of this record could ever make up for that.

More than a feeling - lovely stuff

Decent sounding arena rock but does little to shake up what I feel like has always been a fairly boring genre

Dad rock

Not bad at all, but unlike U2 the other day, I don’t think enough time has elapsed between the seventy zillion times I’ve heard these songs. Impressive that pretty much all of these are (over) played on the radio and they are incredibly catchy.

I knew the hits off this and knew about the album. I wasn’t excited to listen. Mostly unremarkable/bad, but some cool guitar playing. Not my type of music, and by the end of it, I was ready for it to be over.

Este ejercicio me ayudó a darme cuenta de que no me gusta tanto el rock.

Ahhhh Boston... Looking at the tracklist, this song is more radio hits than not. I mean, hell, the first 5 songs make up a considerably portion of the rotation at any classic rock station. I'm mixed on Boston. Growing up my dad used to use it to torture my mom on long car rides. Objectively, I don't think they made great music, but they made some decent sounds and I understand the widespread appeal. For me they get lumped into a category with Foreigner as sort of generic dad classic rock that is made for blasting in your garage while you work on restoring your 70's muscle car and recount stories of former glory. More Than a Feeling is an okay song. I don't love it... its just kind of meh and doesn't go anywhere. Peace of Mind I like a bit more just because the guitar work is a bit more dynamic. This seems like a good one to roll a doobie to. Foreplay / Long Time is the quintessential Boston jam. I won't take anything from this one. I used to get hyped to this song and still enjoy it. I think Smokin' might be my favorite of the hits on this album after Foreplay / Long Time. This album almost captures a particular era in rock n' roll in a nutshell. This is about as inoffensive of rock music as there can be. Lump this into a mixtape with Foreigner and Journey, and go to town. I am about as unexcited coming out as I expected to be going in. This is a 2 / 5 from me.

2-2.5 started with a bang but the rest doesn’t compare. Foreplay/longtime also deserves a mention

I primarily know this as the arena-rock radio hegemon against which the amazing music of the late 70s defined itself. I certainly didn't need to hear these songs 8000 times and ambiently absorb 40% of the lyrics and its hard not to hold that against them. Not an album of subtle pleasures, this is the corniest rock imaginable. But, Boston, "there is something about you," and somehow I find myself begrudingly enjoying this fun anthemic and melodic album. The guitar tone is the star here - overdriven, over-dubbed, and over the top. And yet, I really am in no rush for the 8002nd time hearing this. Favorite: Hitch a Ride

Album starts at a 5 and then loses its stars quickly. Never thought of Boston as the bridge between classic rock and new wave but I heard that here, which was cool. Really I never thought much of Boston other than that band with those songs from commercials. Don't think much more of them now. The hoo-rah classic rock moments like singing about being in a band and dubbing an annoyingly "epic" organ solo as "Foreplay" in the year 1976 when such stylings should have very much already been on the been-there-done-that out and out is just annoying. I skipped a lot of songs near the end.

milquetoast boomer music

First track is a banger, but the rest is so cheesy

Kai tää oli jotenkin merkittävä, mutta nyt haisee vaan rahankiilto silmissä tuotettu bulkki.

I could have played More Than a Feeling and left it at that. 'Cos that's Boston's career, right? Boston sound like a band from the fag end of the 60's that didn't quite grasp the new. This limps along after the opener. One extra star for More Than a Feeling.

Es todo igual el disco. Es del rock tipo 'one hit wonder' de los 80's. Sobre explota el recurso del sólo de guitarra. No me gustó.

Ok symphonyrock but not my cup of te

As expected. All sounds like how I imagined Boston.

Smashy and Nicey ruined this genre for me.

Hated this, apart from more than a feeling.

More than a feeling is a classic of the genre The rest is very much of the genre

Solid classic rock album

I like the story behind this: the MIT graduate working for Polaroid while be plays bars at night and shops around his future platinum-selling songs to record companies, who all reject him; his pursuit of writing the prefect song; auditioning many singers until he found one who could deliver the goods. And More Than a Feeling could be the perfect pop-metal song. I remember when I first hear it thinking 1) how much I hated it and 2) how big a hit it would probably become with its cliched riffs and vocals. Side 1 is interesting for historical reasons. Side 2 is pretty bad.

How good is More Than a Feeling? It’s almost one of those rare breed of songs that transcend time. I also like how the album cover always reminded me of the cover art for the Atari 2600 version of Space Invaders. Alas, the rest of the album is rather mundane and not worth listening to, especially these days.

2 decent tracks

There's a reason most people have never heard, or heard of, any track on this album apart from 'More Than a Feeling'. Any album that leads with a 'signature track' which showcases everything that's bad about 1970's American stadium rock & goes downhill from there is likely to be a tough old listen, & so it was.

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ hadn’t softened me up to ‘More Than A Feeling’ and Girl Talk hadn’t softened me up to ‘Foreplay / Long Time’ by overlaying a Southern rapper (Ludacris, I believe) over a portion of it. But dammit this is still clinically constructed bullshit. I’ll take The Cars as my power pop innovators of choice, they never had the dissonance of claiming to be wild while sounding precise.

Bara inledningsspåret som är något att ha.

One good track and then 32+ minutes of AOR nonsense

generic dad rock, but the first song does it well

I've heard all these songs before. They're fine.

Great opening track, down hill after that

Crap period in music. The prog is alright

A bit too MOR yawn

Too radio-y for me

Ihan ok faijarokkia, en varmaan kuuntele uudestaan. Hyvän mielen taustamusaa jota Dean varmaan luukuttais Impalassa

The backstory behind the album is a lot more interesting than the music within. 2 cut-off arm sleeves turned into headbands out of 5.

I'll never forget that random YouTube comment I once read about the man whose wife was dying in hospital. Her name was Marianne, and he would sit by her bedside every day and hold her hand. One day he was just too tired to stay awake, so he closed his eyes for a nap, and during that time, Marianne slipped away. Fiction or no, that's a beautiful, heartbreaking story. The rest of the album is pedestrian get-down rock-out af. Looks like they accidentally criticalled on their songwriting check with the first track. I went and took a dump in the middle of the last song. Not sure if it was just coincidence or if the song filled me with the urge to defecate.

Music for overweight truck drivers in the 1970s and no one else.

first track good but the rest felt generic

This is certainly a 70s album

Vocal styling makes it seem so dated. Decent grooves on a couple tracks.

Listened to one song

More than a feeling erg fijn nummer. Rest is echte ponyrock, zoals wij dat vroeger plachten te noemen.

Eh. Not into dueling guitars in harmony.

They are all super recognizable songs. Just not my favorite.

Some recognizable songs but this album as a whole is so one-note. It's only 8 songs long and it reuses melodies constantly. Kind of a dud to me

The major hit More Than A Feeling and two songs after (Peace Of Mind and Foreplay / Long Time) are really quite good. Everything after that is decidedly mediocre. The production on this album is really quite good, especially for the time. They seem to have been able to get this full bodied sound, where a lot of their contemporaries struggled.

Horribly cheesy 70s American rock. Doesn't do a whole lot for me.

If this album is on this list, why not include Journey or Europe in it while you're at it? I mean... "Don't Stop Believin'" and "The Final Countdown" are catchier than anything on Boston's first LP, aren't they? Oh, no, cheesy dad rock fans might argue, no, no, noooooooo, Boston wrote and performed better songs. Well, did they? Let's break this mothership down track by track : More Than A Feeling: yep, OK, it's got a nice chorus, cool T-Rex-like handclappings and great guitar parts (rhythm and solo) going for it. I can't help feeling that what's good in the song was already a little dated in 1976, but who cares about that now? A convincing opener overall. 4/5 Peace Of Mind : I like the lyrics on this one, something about a dude stuck in a company on a lowlevel position knowing there's more to life than corporate competition (Tom Scholz worked for Polaroid on such a job before his rock dream came true). Yet harmonically speaking the whole thing's a little bland. Only the end is really worth it, with that guitar riff followed by those fifth (or third?) harmony overdubbed solos. But that moment is way too short. 2.5/5 Foreplay / Long Time : Maybe I was too hard when I gave that Genesis album a 2. That baroque, annoying rococo organ solo on the introduction of this song might have required some technical chops, yet it's still *very* embarrassing to listen to today. Not every prog-rock flourish from the 70s has aged gracefully, and here's a good example. What's also a bit daft is that when the song proper starts, it's a little too pedestrian melody and rhythm-wise to justify such delusions of grandeur before. By this point, the albums starts to feel very performative. "Takin' your time" doesn't mean *we* have to get lulled into sleep. The impressive vocal harmonies keep us awake, fortunately, and so do another instance of those T-Rex-like handclaps. Besides, the guitar solo at the end shreds hard, once again. But apart from that... 2, maybe 2.5/5 Rock and Roll: Excruciatingly boring song. As unoriginal as its title. Well, let me correct that: with a similar topic and title, Led Zeppelin knew how to create a visceral atmosphere, at least. Boston just can't: it's all very performative and there's nothing else to it. Fittingly, lyrics are uninteresting clichés, too. A dud. 0/5 Smokin': copy and paste the text up above and replace "rock'n'roll" with "rhythm'n blues" (quoted in the lyrics). 0/5 Hitch a Ride : Some Kinks-like flavours (circa Village Green Society) at the start of this one had raised my hopes a little... but no, false alarm, the same performative stuff occurs again and again after. And then, it becomes even worse than that! While I found them charming on the first side of this record, the T-Rex-like handclappings are now grating my ears as a cheap trick, I want to smash that organ into a thousand pieces (organ solos should be banned by the Geneva convention as weapons of mass destruction) and even the guitar solos make me want to roll my eyes right to the back of my head now. Jesus, this is SO cheesy!!!! 1/5 Something About You: A *very* "power pop" track. Which would be fine if the chords were just way more original. But maybe I'm too worn out by the barrage of bad taste before to care now... 1/5 Let Me Take You Home Tonight: Eagles territory. *yawn* 1/5 I can hear some folks going at me now: "but... but look at the technical wizardry! Scholz actually recorded most of this stuff in his basement!". Yeah, and? If it's to sound like something that was *not* recorded in a basement, why should I care if it was? "Lo-fi" recordings made decades later proved that they could have a charm on their own, far from any big studios artificial shenanigans. Maybe Scholz just missed the opportunity to be creative and fully ahead of the curve here, as good as he was technically speaking. In the end, imitating a big studio sound from a basement is nothing but this, a technical feat. It's not necessarily an *artistic* one. But look guys, the *real* problem here is not the sound, it's the songs: *all of them* on side 2 are just freaking AWFUL. And you *know it*, for chrissake! Some of those five-stars reviews up there even sneakily admit it. Well, why did you give this album five stars, then??? An album is not an E.P. It's not a single either. And a good one might have weaker spots here and there, yet it still needs to be cohesively good overall. I'm amazed at how many "perfect" reviews this record got on this app. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the nostalgia factor came into play. Here's the thing, however: sometimes oldies are NOT goldies. So, c'mon, guys, get a grip on yourself. I can understand and even respect 3 or 4-star assessments. But 5 is way too high! Maybe it's time for some dad rock fans to let go of their bad faith. Music is subjective and all, I know that. But it's no reason for some to be in denial. At least to this point. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 962 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 16 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 8 Albums from the list I will *not* include in mine (as I think many others are more important): 13 (including this one) Albums I might not be able to judge (some might end up on my final list but it's because I recognize how culturally important they are): 2

J'aime bien le côté prog et ça rock. (Foreplay / Longtime est cool) Mais pas mon genre de mood/feel, ni de voix. À noter que mes ratings (étoiles) sont basé sur mon appréciation et non d'une critique objective.

Oh, good. Irrelevant, overplayed 70s arena rock, one of the most tepid, unnecessary dalliances in the history of rock music. This album fails the "must hear before you die" test.

2.5. I find this slow and boring

Just not my style

Mwah, afgezien van het openingsnummer doet het me weinig

More than a feeling is certainly a banging tune!! I find the back-story so interesting on this album and I do love the glittery guitar solos, this guy is clearly a bit of a genius but he's too much of a perfectionist, the songs are so tight but I reckon it holds it back creatively. Parts of the album are boring towards the end.

Not sure if classic rock is based on Boston or vice versa, but seems pretty standard.

It took me over a year to finally convince myself to listen to this album because I knew what to expect from this album. I love rock, but Boston is definitely one of my least favorites from the genre. Fundamentally it's good music but for some reason it just dosen't click for me. Although I didn't like this album too much there were some good moments, like the solos. It was the only parts I really enjoyed and was pleasantly surprised how good they were. Apart from that, not my cup of tea

Knackige 37 Minuten und ein glücklicherweise nicht komplett aber leidlichvon Autowerbung ramponierter Opener („More than a feeling“) gestalten das Gesamtwerk eines Stretchlimousinen Pop-Rocks, das manchen gefallen mag, mir aber nicht. Dem Können gönnende 1.5

Ach Gottchen (1.7)

While I don't mind the twin guitar solos, this is not really my thing. Seems to me a heavy 60s & 70s US bias in this list so far

5,5/10 Medíocre/chato, repetitivo

Onko tämä nyt sellaista aikuisrockia? Soft Rockia? Kevytmetallia? Varmasti toimii hyvin Kotkan Meripäivillä. Ei herätä suuria tuntia suuntaan tai toiseen. Rahkeet ei ihan riitä peruskolmoseen, eli mennään kolmosen kevytversiolla.

Like a joke in a bonbon to toss at Christmas, this starts off well, but gets old quick

I've actually not listened to this before (aside from the really famous songs everyone has heard obviously). It's very commercial sounding. The wikipedia article says it marks the point where rock shifted from blues-rock to power pop - totally agree with this. This album is probably one of the reasons why punk rock exists. It feels kind of generic to me actually - but that's probably more a reflection on me than the record. Overall, I can see why it's a popular record and can appreciate parts of that - but not for me.

Jackson said it sounded like I was listening to his mom’s playlist. An okay album for me. Nothing really stood out.

Dad vibes

Alright. Couple good singles

“More than a feeling” is nostalgic bop but the other tracks kinda blended together. Too much noise for me :-/ felt similar to T-Rex

Sometimes I hear the James Gang, sometimes Steve Miller, even a touch of the Eagles with a Thin Lizzy guitar riff. Cant make my mind up on this album.

Easy listening but nothing I’ll come back to

Generic like Chris Gunter

A couple of interesting tracks, but no duds or shiners. What I think of as stereotypical classic rock, not much substance.

Sunday late 70s chart rock

They are fine, it is just hard to tell if I am listening to Journey, Foreigner, or Boston.

It's Boston. It all sounded very much like Boston, in a very Boston kind of way.

God this shit sucks so bad. Annoying, pompous, generic, dorky, pretentious corporate arena rock slop. One of my least favorite bands ever.

I quite enjoyed the opening two tracks- ‘More than a feeling’ and ‘piece of mind’ I felt like I was American, had big hair, a massive moustache and lived in the early 80s… Unfortunately part way through track 3 I realised I have and am none of those things! Disappointed Best track- ‘peace of mind’ Worst track- ‘let me take you home tonight’ 3/10

Boston Awful. Simply awful. Every rock cliche in the book but these go up to 11. Best Track - that godawful Shrek song Worst Track - all of them but especially the misogynistic crap of Let Me Take You Home Tonight 1/10

Music is tragic and the sleeve a horror, designed by the much-respected Paula Scher and illustrated by Roger Huyssen for Epic Records, Scher, who once designed covers and worked as an art director for major artists such as The Rolling Stones, admits she's “mystified” by the continued interest in this album package. “The Boston cover was designed in 1976 and is now 39 years old,” she says. “It was, and still is, in my opinion, a mediocre piece of work.” The Atlantic 2015 (edited) A space-shaped guitar destroying Earth - what were they thinking?

i am not into arena rock

Meh. A little too heavy rock for me.

#371/1001. Coprolites are fossilized feces (from dinosaurs, mammals, etc.). When cut and polished they can show internal textures and sometimes mineralization that produces attractive patterns and a glossy finish. What else is this Boston album?

Could not even finish this one

Epic rock 70's, no mi onda. Para final de peli yankee de la época.

I’ve never liked their famous song lol.

It might be a Canadian thing but when I hear “More Than A Feeling” the first thing I think of is how that song was used in commercials for the mediocre and bizarrely-named pizza chain Boston Pizza in the 90s. I’m not mad about it though, because this is music that seems like it was always destined for the suburban strip mall. There’s no sense of rebellion here, it’s rehearsing the motions but there’s nothing behind the slick production. It sold millions of copies, but of course it did.

Cant stand them

This album feels so generic.. every song seems the same.

Music for people who think goatees are cool.

More than a feeling: pretty okay but it sounds like 30 other songs Peace of mind: same as the first one Foreplay/Long time: same issue again.. i dont know if i wanna finish listening to this cuz i legit just sounds like the same thing over and over and i dont like that Rock & roll band: meh Smokin': a little better but still not good.. Hitch a ride: im genuienly just waiting for this album to be over this one actually started out decent and went bad halfway thru Something about you: it literally sounds the same as the other songs Let me take you home tonight: mid as fuck Overall rating 1/10. it isnt my type of album but i understand if people like it. i just find it boring how similar the songs are to eachother

- I don't find that this music has any soul... it's dad rock at its most dad rock. It's bland and overproduced. Just boring long guitar and keyboard riffs/solos that don't leave any emotional impact and lyrics and melodies that don't stick. Yeah, dude can play the guitar well, but it just isn't fun to listen to - it feels like he's showing off that he knows his scales and runs. - More than a Feeling is good, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the (boring) songs. Case in point - this album is from a well-known band made in 1976, and I'd only heard one song off of it (and wish it had stayed that way). - I'm not into the lead singer's voice, either - it feels strained and whiny/yelling. - This gets a 1 for leaving 0 impression except being bored and wanting it to be over. - Tom Scholz sounds like a controlling narcissist.

Only because zero is not an option

Boston Cream Pie.

I do not like Boston every radio station in America plays their songs incessantly; pure unadulterated yeech.

I don't think anyone from Massachusetts identifies Boston as a true local band. Aerosmith, Cars, Modern Lovers - absolutely. Boston (the band) is a soulless, placeless disgrace.

Seriously???

Nah not for me

Not my kind of music

Does anyone like Boston? I know they’re big in America but I’ve never met a fan. Better than I expected, but I had very low expectations based on the hit. Which is clearly their only salvageable song. Every song overstays its welcome and has hideous unnecessary keyboard swoops and a braindead guitar sound. The singer is shrill. Two songs are especially egregious (Rock n Roll Band and Smokin) chugging ratatatat pub band blues rock with an expensive surface studio sheen. If I could give zero I would every day and twice on Sundays.

Boston is boring

okay, i honestly gave this a good try. made it like 3 tracks in. but being the gen z'er that i am, it's quite difficult to listen to "dad rock" with an unbiased ear. i can't divorce it from the corniness i associate it with. boston was no exception -- nauseating late 70s bullshit. i would have committed to listening to the whole thing if i felt any confidence that my opinion would change even a little. sorry

formulaic 70s rock

MOR AOR. As if I'd f asked AI to create a generic 1970s rock album.

Perfectly Smooth Rock Music. Very bland. No idea why this is on the list. This is my 2nd album and if this is the caliber of recommendation (already extremely widely known AND not very good) I doubt I'm making it through 1001.

Off the cuff remark: every rock cliché in the book. Unfortunately not even funny. It gets a star for More Than A Feeling Revisit?: Hell no

"Rock and roll band, everybody's waitin' / Getting' crazy, anticipatin' / Love and music, play, play, play, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" And that's the lyrical depth you get with this album. I did not enjoy this. 37 minutes of tedious 70s American rock with beer breath and unwashed jeans. Utterly charmless and I'm not sure why this was included on this list of essential albums.

is it a masshole xp to know every song in this album without having ever listened to it

Not for me.

No me gusta

This is everything I hate about rock and roll.

wow its both brassy And tinny!

I know this was big back when I was 8. I thought it was hot garbage then and I still do now.

As a massively popular and big selling AOR rock debut, this deserves to be on this list. But I really don't like it at all. It's the kind of music that made punk so necessary. I have dutifully played this album through.

Not my cup of tea.

there’s something really gross about this record and i can see why cobain was embarrassed by his association with it

Garbage. Always hated this. 1 Star

Not a fan

Joyless pap. Micromanaged to within an inch of its life with all the rock, life and joy sucked out of it. Even steely Dan has joy. This is middle class, no culture white boy rock writ large.if the bland suburbs of middle America or Australia had a soundtrack to wallow in their mediocrity it’s this. If beige was music, it’s this. This is like going to a party where some bore is intent on telling you all about his obsession to the nth degree. Give me something I can dance to. Give me something that moves me. No wonder Maryanne walked away. I’m surprised she didn’t run and then get a restraining order. Give me the who, zeppelin, Springsteen, Tom petty, the kinks, Queen, or even Aerosmith. No wonder punk hit so hard. This is 1976, punk is 1977. Can we really be surprised? The pistols or The clash pee all over this. Let alone the ramones or Television. This album angers me. Tasteless White boys and music. Pah.

Bland rock

Bit dated and boring

God damn it. STOP FEEDING ME DAD ROCK.

Something about Boston. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed them.

Not my vibe

No! I listened and I get how it would’ve been great music in the 70’s, but too cheesy for me. I had hope for the song ‘smokin’ until the keyboard solo, then I lost interest

Yea! Rock music! I can throw a football over a mountain!

All sound the same to me One hit band

Snooze

Svakalega leiðinleg plata, verra en ég bjóst við. Líklega það lélegasta sem við höfum fengið og toppað með ljótasta coveri sem sögur fara af.

Ubiquitous in the ‘70s. Impressive for its sonic advancement at the hands of Tom Scholtz. But ultimately a vapid piece of work with no relevance to the times in which it was created, nor today.

Not a fan

This album was pretty hard to get through.

It was the same sound for every song. I didn't finish listening.

没听完

I prefer music where «rock n’ roll» is never mentioned in lyrics. The best thing about this album is the relatively short playtime.
