fav songs: it’s over starlight mr. blue sky birmingham blues space opera, orchestral, symphonic pop 70/100
Dédicace au Did à Rennes
Turn To Stone is such a great creative opener. Imagine hearing this for the first time in the 70's? This was a great album from start to finish. Sweet Talkin’ Woman and Mr. Blue Sky were my standouts.
Amazing album. One of the most prominent reasons why this isn't a 5 is that Mr. Blue Sky is one of my least favourite songs ever. God, I hate that stupid song. "It's Over" is an incredible song, though, I wish it wasn't ever over.
Great record, the music lives up to the name of the band. Reminded me of Queen, but I believe it's a bit softer and more gentle.
I’ve heard this before but I don’t own it and it’s not in my dad’s collection. I’ve always liked ELO whenever they show up on the radio and ran through all their albums a few years ago, but nothing jumped out beyond the big radio hits. I dig the production on this with the 70s version of wall of sound. The coke budget must have been astronomical but it affected the production in a 70s manner (complementary) rather than 80s style (derogatory). Listening to this by itself rather than cramming and entire discography into a few evenings gives a new perspective; there aren’t any of the real big radio hits in here, but a few recognizable singles mixed in with some deep cuts shows their range, however limited it is. Altogether it’s a well crafted album, the songs are dense but purposeful; and I feel like going rollerskating.
Enjoyed the vibes. Wasnt keen on the same vibe for one hour tho :')
A very good and fun prog-pop album. I do feel it's unfortunately too long and drags a bit in places. There is absolutely a 5/5 album here, but this did not need to be a double LP. Removing the extras from sides 1 & 2 and cutting side 4 would streamline the album and make for an all-timer in my opinion. No bad songs, but the album does suffer from bloat. Top tracks: Starlight, Steppin' Out, Big Wheels, Mr. Blue Sky
Incredible album by an incredible group. Of course, "Mr. Blue Sky" has been etched into the collective conscious thanks to Guardians of the Gakaxy, but this entire ELO album is magical and endearing pop music. I can't help but love its genuine enthusiasm. If I am to criticize, I will admit this album drags on too long. Cut at least 10 minutes for brevity, and it would be better.
One of my very favorite albums
Is there a band that’s more accurately named than Electric Light Orchestra? You hear them, and they sound like an electric light orchestra. Anyway, I’m an ELO fan, and this has some great songs. Probably doesn’t need to be a double album, hence the four stars.
Delightful in a lot of ways, so many genres covered
yea
Sweet talkin woman and Mr Blue Sky are fantastic. The whole album obviously has the distinctive sound of ELO - well worth multiple listens.
So great
a 4 on the merits of Mr. Blue Sky along. The rest of the album is a 3.
There are some delightful, if overcooked, pop songs. This is an album that sounds like its cover art, in a way; futuristic and floaty but also elegant and of its time. If John Lennon and Stevie Wonder made a collab record with a sci-fi concept, this might be what it sounds like. Jeff Lynne could have done less but then it wouldn’t be ELO.
I've never listened to ELO before apart from their radio hits, but was actually really impressed. I enjoyed the wide variety of instrumentation and also enjoyed the unconventional song structures they used. 4/5
If you enjoy ELO's style of rock and roll, this is one of their classics. If you don't, you'll find this as overdone overly produced wankery. Luckily, I enjoy what ELO does. The Beatles influence is always prominent in Jeff Lynne's work. But this album also seems to take quite a bit of influence from the BeeGees. A lot of Gibb-style harmonies. Jeff Lynne looked at disco and said, "Yeah, I'll have a bit of that too." The album should have ended with side 3's "Concerto for a Rainy Day', but they had to fill side 4 anyways,
great fun album
8/10
its coool
A little bloated but Jeff Lynne is a genius, gorgeous sound
Really enjoyed this
Top 3: It’s Over, The Whale, Starlight
With obvious Dylan and Beatles influences. Enjoyable album all the same, tough to give less than a 4 to an album that includes Mr Blue Sky 4*
Mr Blue Sky on this album? What an album!
awesome space rock tunes
It's very atmospheric album with the 1970s vibes. And actually I found a lot of familiar motifs in the songs but the songs also contain the harmonies which are not my cup of tea.
This album surprised me, in part because I'm just not a big Mr. Blue Sky fan. But I found several of the other sections intriguing; the sound gave me a mix of David Bowie and Pink Floyd. It was a little prog rock and a healthy mix of pop. Individual track highlights for me include Jungle, and then the run of songs from Standin' in the Rain up to Mr. Blue Sky. Again, Mr. Blue Sky might be one of least favorite tracks on the album...but the rest of the album made me appreciate it a little bit more.
This was such a fun album and outside of what I would usually put on. I loved all of Spotify's suggestions when it was done, too.
Pleasantly surprised with this. Very listenable and unique sounding. Listened repeatedly and the first album I will plan to return to that I didn’t already know.
Outstanding album
Majestic album. The Beatles combined with theatrics of Queen makes up for a very pleasant and great album. Of course, "Mr. Blue Sky" is a stand-out song, but so are the first three tracks of the album. Will definitely be revisiting this one. 9 / 10
hä jo epic
eu estou OBCECADA nesse!!!! é quase como se o PAUL MCCARTNEY fosse compositor do QUEEN e chamasse o DAFT PUNK pra produzir uma faixa ou outra. belo e moral!!!!
Really liked it. Listened to it twice. Almost five stars but some of the songs didn’t really connect for me.
Peak. Such a fun album. No notes really. It's very repeatable. The 1st half is good, but the second half is a whole other vibe.
A bit too long. Would have been better with a few songs cut out
Que bonito, nunca lo había escuchado completo. Pero que bonito.
Album muito gostozinho de ouvir de fundo fazendo alguma coisa, gostei, mas nada de tão especial.
An excellent demonstration of phasers
Amazin' At first I instantly just gave this 5 stars for the album is and will be amazing. I decided to reduce it to 4 though. Highlights were summer and lightning and mr. blue sky
Classic prog rock! I enjoy that most of the songs are like small bursts of inspiration, sometimes drawing from classsical motifs like Gershwin‘s „Rhapsody in Blue.“
hell yeah. i forget this band
This is pretty good. I added “Starlight” to my library.
Perfectly serviceable. Never listened to ELO intentionally before. Fun, easy, polished. Certainly a little Beatles-y at times.
Erg goed album, geweldige hits, maar helaas toch een paar skips
potentially the most accurate band name ever obviously i love it, it’s cheesy and extra in the best way 4.5/5
A few weaker songs, but overall this was pretty fun and exceeded my expectations
Great album. Definitely can pick up on the Beatles influence. A little too long.
Great upbeat album to have on while doing whatever and very nice transitions between songs
Jeff Lynne tha god
This is such a fun and well produced pop album. It’s so grand and glossy that it gives it this cinematic sense which I always enjoy. The use of strings, vocoders, and layered vocals really amp up the energy and shows how committed the band was to making the album as big as be, they committed fully. Yeah this was great.
I bought a copy of this on vinyl in 2006 for 98 cents. The second side of the second record was all warped. So I still get nervous when I hear "Sweet is the Night".
I wasn’t a big fan but it was fun to reminisce. Nice to listen to.
Album No. 0131 on my list. I've been waiting for quite some time to listen to this. Electric Light Orchestra's "Out Of The Blue" was one of these albums that I assumed to be good, but just had never listened to in its entirety. I'm glad that changed actually, because it is indeed a pretty good album! I like the "orchestral" sound of this (for a lack of better words). It's really well produced and the instrumentation is on spot. A great pop album sound that certainly stood the test of time. Besides, there are many cool, catchy pop-rock songs on this album. A lot of Beatles vibes, but I mean - that's not a bad thing, right? I can't deny that the album does have its lengths and a somewhat more well-designed song selection would have even improved it, but the many good songs do make up for that in my opinion. I will add "Turn To Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Mr. Blue Sky" (obviously), and "Sweet Is The Night" to my playlist, but I'm quite sure that I'll listen to many of the songs on this again. With time, this could really become a staple for me. Good stuff overall! 4/5 stars!
Stunning! Nearly 5 stars
por lo menos 2 me gustan
me gusta pero hay alguna cosa rara así que no le doy 5 estrellas
YES YES YES
ELO's "Out of the Blue" is a monumental album. Not just in terms of its over an hour length, but in its dramatic, orchestral flourishes, and through its centrepiece the famed 'Concerto for a Rainy Day'. Yet above all it is a triumph of thematic fusion, melding rock and orchestra through falsettos, prominent synths, and strings to create the band's iconic sound. This album encapsulates it best.
This was a bit whimsical, but fun to listen to. I would honestly give it a 3.5 if possible, but I'm okay with a 4.
Snazzy
It's long, think it is interesting enough though throughout, production is excellent, songs are packed with lots of different things going on, and then you have some huge hits in there.
Actually a solid album top to bottom
Fun beats and unique sounds.
7.5/10
Good stuff 4/5
Lynne is the spiritual successor to Brian Wilson as the maestro of progressive pop. Lush arrangements with a solid rock backbeat. Some 70s cliches like vocoder effects but overall solid.
For mr. blue sky alone this album slaps. But each song is great and I have saved many songs. I am very glad to have listened to the rest of the album, which I normally wouldn't have done, but they knocked it out of the park.
4/5 Each song is a delight. Literally each. I had some expectations for this album and they were met. I loved feeling like an astronaut while listening to this. Definitely loved this experience and would willingly go through it again.
fiquei com sono
3.5
Très bon! Grosses influ beatles, floyd etc… mais singulier à la fois. 3.5+/5
"Turn to Stone" and "Sweet Talkin' Woman" are two of my favorite ELO songs. "Big Wheels" and "Birmingham Blues" were a nice discovery. The rest is good if unremarkable.
Feels like Queen and the Beatles had a baby.
Listening to this was enough for me to realize I haven't listened to enough ELO.
If I had listened to this in one go through I bet I’d comfortably give it a three. But I knew going in that I’d being doing myself a service to break this into like three different chunks. Would be irritating if it was an hour of this very same-y wall of sound
I’ll give the run time a break since it’s a double album. Good stuff, shame this is the only ELO album on the list.
loved the more powerful songs very much, found the less funky ones a bit boring
This was the first album I listened to on this journey and I enjoyed it. I do not know much about music but I liked the vibes. Would listen again and get more into it.
Prachtig. Klinkt typisch ELO. Hele herkenbare sound, helemaal in thema. Mr. Blue Sky is natuurlijk wel een pareltje dat erop staat
plenty of iconic songs - thank you guardians vol 1 🙌 probably only a handful of weaker songs, otherwise one my of my favourite entries so far of this album a day journey :D
Unique and recognisable production
"Out of the Blue" by Electric Light Orchestra explores themes of love and perseverance, emphasizing the importance of truly finding yourself and your place in the world. The Space-y nature of the instrumentation in the album contrasts with the very grounded and real lyrics, providing harmony between the Earth and the Sky in the simplest of ways. Repeated motifs in the choral voices, mentions of the sky, and the robot voice give this album its signature charm, which listeners can expect from the biggest song on the album, “Mr. Blue Sky.” I find the back half of the album to be especially amazing, and it is the main portion that carries the entire album. Highly recommend this album, especially if you love “Mr. Blue Sky” and if you want to hear the song in the context of the album.
iconic album for a reason! many good songs
if the bee gees were good
good shit
Nice. Amazing.
Knowing Turn to Stone and Mr. Blue Sky prior to this full listen through definitely altered how I processed this project (as I find the former excellent and the latter more annoying as the years go on). It is a very eclectic and strange project that has some incredible highs and legendary track runs, but also sadly some points where I feel it drags and delivers what is not ELO’s magnificence and creativity they are so often regarded with.
Hell. I remember this being released. ELO have been virtually forgotten about, but "Out Of The Blue" is a cracking good album.
Joyful rock with a bunch of falsetto harmonies. I have never listened to a full ELO-album before, but I should propably do that more. I enjoyed this a lot. The album could maybe be a little bit shorter, though. 17 songs and 1m10mins is a little over the top. Favourite songs: Turn To Stone, Mr Blue Sky and It’s Over.
I feel like if you don’t immediately start tapping your feet or humming the melody to “Mr. Blue Sky” you need to be checked for a pulse. An endlessly catchy song. Lots of other great tracks on the album. Just a great pop/rock album from the 70’s. 7/10 Favorite Tracks- “Jungle” “Summer and Lightning” “Mr. Blue Sky”
Orchestral, 70's Beatlesque goodness from Jeff Lynne and company. I had really only heard the greatest hits from these guys, had never heard this whole album before. Beyond "Turn to Stone" and "Sweet Talking Woman," there are some really good songs here. It has my favorite ELO song, "Mr. Blue Sky," and the whole thing is cinematic and reminiscent of McCartney in the best ways. We probably didn't need "The Whale" and there's an argument to be made that it didn't have to be a double album. But it was super fun to listen to this one.
Love me some ELO. For some white guys from England who are famous for blending classical music and classic rock, they could be funky as hell - the way they use strings sometimes is closer to disco than classical. I could see a lot of the stuff on here making great hip hop samples even. This one is so long that it's bound to have a couple duds, but it's still so good. Some fantastic deep cuts too, I especially loved Sweet Is the Night. Jeff Lynne deserves more credit than I think he gets for his innovation and his vocal skills. Not quite the five stars I'd give A New World Record, but not far off
4?
First real listen to ELO. Really enjoyed this. Could release it today and still do well. Bit of a Queen sound. Very fun and easy.
MEU DEUS 1H10MIN FAVS(top 3): turn to stone, steppin' out, standin' in the rain mençoes honrosas: it's over, jungle, big wheels, mr. blue sky, sweet is the night, thw whale, wild west hero compraria o vinil: NAO aiiiiiiii é o album com aquela musica classica de video com varios takes ao som da batida KKKKKKKKK, n reconheci até começar a ouvir... q tudo. enfim, album bem legal, musicas bem divertidinhas; outro album daqui q o final ficou mais legal q o começo (dnv nao q o começo seja ruim) nota final: 4/5
A perfect Christmas Day listen. If not on Christmas Day it would be a very different rating
Maybe weirdly, I think of ELO as British Van Halen. Both are very talented musicians producing very palatable sub-genres of rock, and both are fun. If you don't believe me, ask Dr. Who. This is something original, quality, and fun. Influence 4. Hits 4. Intangibles 4. I like fun 4.
Intro fire.
Everyone loves a bit of ELO, and surely their best known and greatest song Mr Blue Sky is here on this 70 minute epic. The production is stunning, with piano, strings and Jeff Lynn's falsetto giving you a whirlwind experience. It's not at all punk or new-wave or anything like that, which is probably why they were quite coolly received around this time. If anything there's more of a nod to disco at times. And whereas a lot of British 70s multi-instrumentalists were sounding like the Beatles, it would usually be in the McCartney mould, whilst elements of this are much more Lennonesque. Turn to Stone and Steppin' Out are highlights and the variety here is quite something. It's an ambitious album and they pull it off but to me not quite the full 5 stars. Giving it a 4 for now, but will listen again and if 3 or 4 more songs penetrate me then I'll upgrade it. Oh, and did I mention it's got Mr Blue Sky on it, one of the best songs ever written.
have not listened before this was gaggy and i wasn’t rlly expecting to like it as much as i did fav - the whale

ELO is one of my favorites to listen to and this album was great. Harmonies are phenomenal and you get two 10/10 tracks with Turn To Stone and Mr. Blue Sky. Overall, great ELO album with awesome synths, percussion, and guitars. Prob a 8/10.
Lots going on with this one but overall enjoyable
Pop rock gold
Very fun and very Beatles-esque, I liked it a lot but it was probably like 30 minutes too long for me to listen all in one sitting. I'd steal the songs on it for playlists most likely. I also own this on vinyl so it's neat finally listening to it for real.
I enjoyed most of this album. There were really no surprises as the songs were what I've heard on the radio and come to expect from this group. One thing I really liked was that the songs were different enough to not get bored with this album but definitely held together by the vocals and the sound which identified this group. Best song: "Mr. Blue Sky" and the worst song: "The Whale".
Loved that one. It was very funky fresh and the beats and just the overall structure of the song kept me on my feet.
Iconic and a terrific album. Maybe a bit bloated with filler tracks, but it's hard to cut any of them. The hits are fantastic and the rest of the album has that classic ELO sound.
Classic album with some of the best classic rock tunes ever. This album is what made ELO coined as “The Future Beatles”.
One of dad's favourites, incredibly familiar with this one, and for good reason. it's a great album! I've even got this one on CD already. Happy to be reminded of it and give it a full listen through.
Live album not my favorite but still a very nice album!
First album I had heard before. Mr blue sky just gets stuck in my head. But i think the album is too long.
I want to say its a groovy album. That really places a time stamp of the 70's
I had listened to previous songs on this album before hand. Overall i really liked the album, definitely going to listen again. 4/5
Beaucoup plus sympa que la veille, Appel pour emprunt plus premières visites. Emprunt relativement gros possible, bonne nouvelle. Electric light orchestra sympa.
This was a pleasant surprise. Most tracks provided some sort of element that was new and fun to listen to (mostly instrumental). You can hear Queen and The Beatles everywhere. Honorable mention to Jungle, it was definitely an outlier but very cool. Fav Tracks: Mr. Blue Sky > Sweet is the Night > Turn To Stone Current Fav Album: Out of the Blue - Electric Light Orchestra (#9/1089)
Fun fun fun! Breezed through this
Pleasantly surprised. Never really rated ELO. Now I do.
This was a discovery. I had never had the chance to listen to ELO (not even Mr Blue Sky!) and I actually enjoyed it a lot. Most of the songs are a lot of fun and arrangements and orchestration are awesome. Sweet Talkin' Woman and Across the Border (with its mariachi trumpets) are the highlights in my opinion. Certainly a bit too baroque for my taste and quite long but surprisingly never boring!
Really good album, interesting combination of electric music and rock. Mr. Blue Sky and Sweet Talkin' Woman are such good songs.
All a bit samey, but decent.
Not my usual thing but great tunes - class album
This album contains one of the best songs ever created, Mr Blue Sky. The rest is also fab but not of the same calibre.
Many well known bangers and all the others were great too 8/10
Love a bit of ELO. Heard this before and expected to love it. But, while it’s very good and has some absolute bangers, it’s weaker than the sum of its parts.
Too long but enjoyed a lot of it
Eclécticos. Visionarios.
Classic
Definitely have heard of this band before and I can see why. The music is a joyous blend of rock and classical impulses, which they used to produce a series of both fun but nuanced songs. Great for a drive. Also, these songs are just so good you've heard them playing in all sorts of movies. That's how much personality is contained within this album.
I have enjoyed every ELO single I’ve ever heard but had never listened to any of the albums. I was excited when this one came up, but then felt disappointed the first time through. I had actually expected it to go much harder in the weird prog rock outer space direction than it does. Folks expressed so much adulation for Jeff Lynne’s songwriting, though, that I decided to go back and listen a few times over the weekend. I think that this time through, I got the gist. I buy everything about ELO being a kind of continuation of the Beatles and especially McCartney style songwriting. I ended up humming bit of “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” and “Starlight.” Cool, okay, glad I tried it again. Yet it’s still a four for me because as much as I love the tunes, I just don’t believe enough in the idea that every rock song would be better with strings attached. There’s no question that the sound Lynne created works on ELO’s biggest hits… I had to warn my wife in advance that I’d be singing “Mr. Blue Sky” all weekend. But to me it limits my overall enjoyment. There’s a specific mood in which I turn to “Mr. Blue Sky” or “Living Thing” and sure, now I might turn to this album instead. Yet it doesn’t feel like it re-programmed my brain in the same way some of the other five star albums have done. I’m glad it’s there, it makes me smile, but that’s about it. “Hey you with the pretty face…”
Very cinematic soundscapes, interesting mixes & production, very evocative. True to their mission statement, very beholden to continuing in the vein of ‘60s/‘70s Beatles. (Plus: Mr. Blue Sky!)
Gostei muito desse álbum. Muito rico musicalmente e divertido. QoA Cloudscape.
The ambitious double-album was entirely written in just three and a half weeks, which is insane to think about considering the musical complexity & orchestration on many of the tracks. The most well-known songs like "Turn to Stone" and "Mr. Blue Sky" are standouts of course, but this album is honestly packed with quality.
This album is of a rather underappreciated genre—pop rock but actually fun. I avoid saying that something sounds like The Beatles since it’s usually a nothing-statement considering how wide their influence is, but here I’ll make an exception—some songs here sound WAY too much like The Beatles. But although there are a lot of similarities (mainly in the vocals), it’s the stuff that is different that makes me enjoy this album quite a bit more than anything I’ve heard from The Beatles and their imitators. Primarily this big, incredibly satisfying orchestral sound. This album, for the most part, is pretty consistent despite its length. The songs are melodic and catchy, and this epic, uplifting atmosphere is maintained throughout the record. There’s nothing truly groundbreaking here since it’s still pop rock and had to sound accessible, but this album is still very fun.
I know ELO. But I’ve never ever listened to them. What a sound, like some kind of rock and roll ABBA, mixed with I don’t know what else, The Who? It’s upbeat it’s fun, there’s cowbell and all sorts of other sounds. ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ checks all the boxes. Quite the experience. I think I like it?
How could you not love orchestral rock. Such a great album.
Very enjoyable to listen to.
I surprisingly didn't know a lot of songs from this album, though the sound feels very familiar and cozy to me. Known songs going in: 1 Rating: 4.5 Favourite song(s): Turn to Stone
I enjoyed the album and kept me in a good mood. Such a fun time 😀
Quite like this one tbh. Heard Mr Bluesky before, but are lot of the other songs are good too.
Loved this whole album! I had a blast with every track. The hits are popular for a reason, but every song feels like it could be an iconic track. I will be picking this up on vinyl on day!
Das Album isch literally out of the blue cho - null erwartet, grosse fan psi und grad paar mal dureglost.
catchy melodies, reminds me of queen with its harmonies, futuristic blend with classic rock band feel and beautiful strings. pretty cool album cover too. had the classic fade outs. super fun beginnings that immersed you in the world of whichever song it is. what a wonderful album to listen to with headphones new favs: it's over, sweet talkin' woman, summer and lightning, birmingham blues

1001 Albums Vol. 0011: Out Of The Blue ============================================================ Introduction: Well, I'm pretty sure this is going to break the streak of 9 and 10's I've been giving for the past five to six albums. I don't think this album will be bad by any means. I, in fact, believe that I will probably give it around a 7 or 8, yet I've already heard quite a bit of this album due to a specific person in my life. They're a huge fan of rock and its subgenres. They especially love rock that feels and sounds ambitious and big. I listened to the first few seconds of Turn to Stone and immediately knew that I had heard it before. Some other notable melodies came flowing back to me after those first few seconds. From my memory, most of what I heard was pretty decent to pretty good. There are some examples of songs that I remember as being great. I think that everyone should know at least one song that I find great. Anyway, bias and history aside, this album was released in 1977 by ELO or Electric Light Orchestra. I'm honestly kinda glad I know what to expect from this album, as the Wikipedia rip this website decided to use literally says nothing about the album other than it was extremely successful. Now, this success is for pretty understandable reasons. Firstly, this album is pop rock at its core. Audiences love pop. Secondly and more importantly, this album has a very unique tone to it. If I'm remembering correctly, this album contains an oddly futuristic tone that almost makes each song sound as if you would hear them while on a high-tech space-station. There's just a lot of sonic experimentation, altering production, and unique instrumentation that provide this feeling of a high-tech futuristic world akin to what you would see on Star Wars. Kinda funny that we went from a bleak and depressing future in our previous album to the exact opposite. I guess an optimistic future might have just been a product of the 70's. The time before it seemed like AI was going to take over. Anyway, I'm getting very off topic, the point is, this album has a futuristic tone to it that sounds very distinct to ELO. Other than that, I don't really have anything else to say about this album. Let's just get into it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 1: Turn to Stone Score: 10/10 Track 2: It's Over Score: 7/10 Track 3: Sweet Talkin' Woman Score: 9/10 Track 4: Across the Border Score: 7/10 Track 5: Night in the City Score: 8/10 Track 6: Starlight Score: 7/10 Track 7: Jungle Score: 5/10 Track 8: Believe Me Now Score: 6/10 Track 9: Steppin' Out Score: 8/10 Track 10: Standin' in the Rain Score: 9/10 Track 11: Big Wheels Score: 9/10 Track 12: Summer and Lightning Score: 9/10 Track 13: Mr. Blue Sky Score: 11/10 Track 14: Sweet Is the Night Score: 8/10 Track 15: The Whale Score: 9/10 Track 16: Birmingham Blues Score: 6/10 Track 17: Wild West Hero Score: 6/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Conclusion: Some of what I remember of this album was correct, yet a lot of what I imagined was completely incorrect. There wasn't as much of a futuristic vibe as I thought there would be. I would even call some songs...Jungle...as sounding pretty damn primitive. There were certainly some songs that fit my prediction of this album pretty well, yet the majority were completely different from what I was expecting. There were a lot of songs that I could swear I never heard before as well. I guess I may have just heard a compilation release by the band before or something as I know I've heard a few songs before. That aside, this album has its ups and downs. I will not be the first person to say that Side C of this album is absolutely incredible. It's some of the best pop rock songs I've ever heard, yet the rest of the album is pretty mixed. Musically, this album has a very, very distinct vibe from what you would hear from most other artists. The instrumentation, the odd vocals, the distinct quick violin, the orchestral and progressive structure of many songs, and so much more make ELO have such a distinct and easily recognizable sound. Speaking of progressive, almost every song on this album is progressive in some form. I'm a big fan of progressive tracks when done right, yet many songs on this album sometimes feel a bit too overbearing for their own good. There is a clear chorus and clear verses in most songs, yet the amount of instrumentation introduced creates songs that sound almost completely different when at their end then at their beginning. It almost feels as if I'm listening to songs that completely break typical song structure. The best comparison I can make is comparing many of these songs to Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) or Long Hot Summer Night both by Jimi Hendrix. It will almost certainly require multiple listens for one to simply grasp the basic structure of a singular song off this album. What is the chorus, what is a verse, that kinda thing. Nevertheless, there are many, many moments of musical genius on this album. I could list an endless amount of moments, yet I'll point to the most popular song on this album: Mr. Blue Sky. This song has such an overwhelmingly happy tone to it. It maintains the progressive, orchestral, grand, and alien-like feeling of the album all the while. I mean, the songwriting, instrumentation, vocals, are all perfectly executed on the song to create something that honestly couldn't be reorganized to create anything any better. Listening to this album in its entirety gave me a completely new perspective on this song as well. I knew the song was about happiness, yet a lot of the lyrics didn't make sense while out of context of the three previous tracks. Like I briefly mentioned above, I consider Side C of this album to be a masterpiece. This one side of the album decided to do something completely unique from the other three. It decided to have a general concept. This is a bit of a weird inclusion in an album in which three other sides are unconnected tracks, yet this is the best part of the album so I'm not complaining. This side of the album touches on the theme of depression and the escape from it. It begins with Standin' in the Rain, a track that describes someone in a deep state of sadness, and ultimately concludes with their escape into happiness with Mr. Blue Sky. This side uses weather as a metaphor for their depression as well. Like I said, this side of the album is a masterpiece. It's some of the best pop rock I have ever heard. With that out of the way, I guess I'll touch on the album's vocals. The lead singer is alright. He's not too distinct in his voice. He sounds great, yet I wouldn't call him my favorite singer of all time by a lot. Now, the backup singer's voices are something completely different. I don't know if any effects were used on their voices, but they sound amazing and distinct. Their high-pitched and almost slurred tone is simply iconic. The robotic voice that occasionally shows up throughout the album is incredible as well. The way it alternates in pitch so rapidly combined with its slight echo create yet another iconic element of ELO's music. It's great for the most part. Lyrically, this album is pretty good as well. I wouldn't go so far as to call every line incredible. It's just barely above average for the most part. With all that said, despite having many ups and downs, I find this album to be overall pretty enjoyable. It's certainly far from my favorites of all time, yet it's an album that I guess I might come back to from time to time...probably not....Anyway, it's still good. It's one of the only pop rock albums from this era of music that I could honestly even label as good. ============================================================ Out Of The Blue Score: 8/10 Song Average: 7.9/10
Album that makes you feel good. Felt like a sassy and spectacular journey through space — at times a little Bowie, a little Pink Floyd, and a touch Bob Dylan..? Some of the somber tracks in the center lost me, but then you hit Mr Blue Sky and Sweet Is The Night and forget any problems you had! Also The Whale is an incredibly cool song. Overall this is a vibes rating for a good vibes album.
It sounds like the period it was recorded, but I would not call it dated. After all, it defined an era more than it was defined by it. It reminds me of progressive rock with lyrics. It feels fun and energizing, and the songs roll nicely, just as you want them to when you listen to an album in order.
I enjoyed this album way more than I expected. No notes. Favorite Song: Mr. Blue Sky Least Favorite Song: Jungle
I like it
Just lovely. Great vibes, nice songs, cool effects and experimentation. High 4 stars
The mixture of classical music and 70s Beatlesque soft rock sounds so dated on paper, but this is actually a great album.
Classic
Big, bright, and fun
Great band. Nice harmonization and musical arrangements. Great album.
3.8/5 great songs and compositions too bloated for me tho
An hour plus of theatrical power pop. Great singles and the rest of the album holds up.
Even the album tracks are immaculate. I get that some people might just not like this music, but for post-Beatles power pop this is just about as good as it gets.
Great album
Does anyone remember the magic roundabout
But lightweight in places and overlong/samey but I did enjoy it. Electro prog pop
Yeah this is a banger
Favourite Track: Sweet Talkin’ Woman
pa u stvari dosta dobro. ugodno iznenađen
A relic of its time. Every song is so 70's, which isn't necessarily bad, but I don't think this album holds up as well as some other ones. A solid 3.5/5
Beatles inspired but enough of its own thing to make it enjoyable.
enjoyed the nostalgia kick. Carries a lot of memories. Still dont like Mr Blue Sky but rest is classic.
не понимаю почему ело мне настолько незнаком, но звучит очень приятно. к этому наверно надо будет вернуться ещё
Enjoyed some of it. Really liked Night in the City.
Lang og god
Nice album, but some of the songs just seemed really messy and none of them were very novel or catchy.
I love this 70s disco groove sound mixed with prog rock and pop. Of course I already heard some of ELO’s songs before, including Mr. Blue Sky from this album, but hearing it as a whole gives the band a new context. I also love the cover art it perfectly captures the feeling and atmosphere of the album. I enjoy the overproduction here, the experimental mix of orchestral sounds, synths, strings, and harmonies felt very fitting. Everything about this album is colourful. The band here really does feel like disco Beatles, but in a way that still keeps ELO distinct. It’s definitely a long album I mean its over an hour which I usually don’t like, but this one justifies it, still feels like quality over quantity in my opinion. This feels homogenous, however each track still feels distinct from one another. Overall, I’ll definitely be exploring more of ELO after this. Favourite tracks: Turn to Stone, Sweet Talkin' Woman, Across the Border, Night in the City, Jungle, Standing in the Rain, Summer and Lightning, Mr. Blue Sky, The Whale, Birmingham Blues
This was pretty good.
ELO...just fun music. Used to be a guilty pleasure, but who really cares anymore? Just a pleasure now. 4/5
Excellent but maybe just a little too long.
Good but odd
Good
My first real ELO listen was about what I expected: bright, bubbly, orchestral, almost cinematic post-disco grooves. A lot of influence from that other big gay English prog rock band, Queen. It's got the layers, it's got the grandiosity, but doesn't quite reach those highs. There aren't any big anthems, and the vocals don't really distinguish themselves in the mix like Freddy's. So lacking a Freddy, it's the sweeping instrumentals that are the star of the show, a kalaidoscope of strings, synths, guitar, piano, and percussion of all kinds. I can imagine the lights and stage production that must have gone into the live shows, and the slackjawed teen boomers frying balls on a few 1970s tabs in a field in Birmingham to Turn to Stone and Standin' in the Rain. No doubt I'd have been right there with them.
They are British. But these songs make me feel so happy. Jungle is kind of racist, but in a very innocent, they had no idea kind of way. It reminds me of a time when i was young and the world was still beautiful
Tons of classics
Honestly, loved the hits and the songs between. ELO is a band where I wouldn't know what hits are theirs.
Loved it! Listened a couple times. Good vibes, steady beats, generally a highlight of the 70’s music scene.
8.2, really catchy pop, clear Beatles vibes
I’ll give Jeff Lynne some bonus points right off the bat for being pals with George Harrison. That alone makes him cooler in my book. Luckily, the music here backs it up. Out of the Blue is full of the big, orchestral rock sound that ELO was known for, and it still sounds impressive today. “It’s Over,” “Jungle,” and “Mr. Blue Sky” were the standouts for me. “Mr. Blue Sky” especially is one of those feel-good tracks that never gets old. You can hear how much work went into the arrangements, from the layered harmonies to the strings and quirky sound effects that make the songs pop. Even though it runs a little long in places, the quality stays consistent. Out of the Blue shows just how ambitious and creative Jeff Lynne was at his peak. It is fun, colorful, and packed with hooks that hold up decades later. Favorite song: Mr. Blue Sky
i don't know why, but i liked the album way more than i expected. easily stood out from the one sided, unbearable albums i've listened to on this recent journey i started
had some popular tracks i didn't know the name of
Niceee
loved it
this is a solid 4. almost a 5 for me but too long
на удивление, мне понравилось. концепт выдержан. но все равно долговато.
Very familiar, and very enjoyable. 4.
Lush and otherworldly as always. ELO is one of my faves.
Great album. Two double albums in a row and happily loved both.
Mr Blue Sky into Sweet is the Night was probably best part over some decent prog-pop if that's a thing
You can say whaterver you'd like about ELO but there's at least one song you know and like of them
I definitely thought this band was an instrumental band - isn't it the group that plays the instrumental christmas shows? Anyway, this was way better than I was expecting and sorta did the Queen-type sound but better... and then I realized I was only half way finished with the album. But the best song on the album was Birmingham Blues which was right at the end, and in classic Alex fashion, that song is the least scrobbled song on Spotify which tells me that I'm not getting from this album what other people get. Nevertheless, this was a surprise enjoyment, so 3.5 rounded up even though I won't probs listen all the way through again
Sometimes music is just an emotion screamed at 11, and this one seems to be screaming "HAPPY" at 11. And you know what, sometimes you just have to let the music do its thing and boost your mood.
Sometimes big dumb chamber synth rock is the exact right vibe. Because ELO is always a goddamn delight, even when it’s overlong and overblown. Sure, this has no reason being a double album, and there’s a bunch of filler. But damn can Jeff Lynne write a song, and when he does it’s almost always pop perfection. Good times with some classic tunes.
"Please turn me over" 🤖 ELO's most popular record thanks to the inclusion of their biggest hit. Personally I prefer "Time" and "A New World Record", but this is still a fantastic album. Very consistent despite its longer length. Favorite track: Turn to Stone
Hmm mm, there are certainly some decent tracks on this - blue sky, turn to stone...But, there is far too much uninteresting filler. For me this reduces over all score to 3/4
Never really listened to the Beatles, but this felt very derivative. That being said, I guess I need to listen to the Beatles bc I really enjoyed this especially the latter half. Steppin out was a highlight, so was The Whale
Wasn't expecting much, but I really enjoyed this album. I've always loved Fire On High (different album) and thought the other ELO radio releases were decent enough. But with headphones on, this album proved to be damn good. Complex arrangements, deep sound and excellent vocals all came together very well. Could see myself increasing the rating on this after repeat listens. Also, interested to see what other ELO I've been missing.
Ничего так запись, слушается нормально (особенно в наушниках, когда слышно отчётливо все оттенки звуков). Главный недостаток - однообразие музыкального фона. 6,5 из 10.
7/10 I like ELO, but this is too long and there is a fair amount of meandering. Why not finish sh on Mr Blue Sky?
Long, but a good listen. Electric, pop, unique.
ELO. Always a hit.
Cool album matinal, mais un peu long. Un classique
so good! This was a big point of inspo for Djo's album, which makes a lot of sense. Glad I listened!
4.0
The moment Turn to Stone comes on you can’t help but feel invigorated. It sets the tone for the rest of the album, which is full of vibrant, uplifting melodies and arrangements. The album does feel a bit front loaded, with some less memorable songs until Mr Blue Sky hits. Definitely one of ELO’s defining albums and a major release in the pop/prog genre.
It’s good stuff. Probably a bit long and all sounds a bit samey, so no fiver. Simpsons: Jeff Lyne referenced a couple of times. So I’m counting that.
Some good solid tunes on here, it's a little bit long, but overall it's good.
Sprawling fun and fantastic
Jeez, this is long. That's the main thing to say right off the bat. While I was listening to the second side, I had a feeling that the rest of this album was going to be a drag, but then Side 3 came up and most every song for the rest of the duration hit. The Concerto For A Rainy Day segment is perfect and of course ends with one of the greatest songs ever composed in Mr. Blue Sky. Everyone knows that song rightfully so, but for the rest of the 16 songs on this album, more than half of them are worthy of being heard. I will say that the overall sound of the record feels a bit same-y at times while also being too extra. But when it finds its emotional center in the core of the spaceship heart, I can't help but float and shed a tear. In other words: We get it, Jeff! You like The Beatles! (7/10, 4/5 on this scale)
I don’t hate it, just have to be in the mood for this.
Delightfully strange and close to magnificent. If I needed to turn to someone to make five to ten seconds of perfect music Jeff Lynne would probably be one of my first calls, there are moments on Turn to Stone and Sweet Talkin' Woman that just go places few people in popular music can take us. The album drags a bit in other places but when it's on holy mother of god does it hit.
ELO might has mastered the mash-up of orchestral strings and rock n roll; they also are the perfect musical companion to the 60's/70's retro space aesthetic. I think I always smile listening to them, regardless of the tone of the song (4.5)
Didn't get through it all. Easy to listen to with some absolute bangers
Great album. A lot of wild instruments and cool orchestration
86/100. A classic, and to be frank, an album that’s not talked about enough. Might be ELO’s best, it’s at least up for debate. For me, this is extremely consistent, everything sounds fantastic. The melodies are rich, the production is sharp and it nails that symphonic rock sound with style.
In the 8th grade my science fair project was something with music wavelengths and I used ELO as an example. I didn’t do very well because I procrastinated. My teacher probably knew I didn’t actually listen to the music when I talked about them being an orchestra…boy was I wrong!!!!!
Fantastic!
Conhecia uma das musicas a principio, trazem um som caracterisco e as vezes evolutivo com rock+orquestra que é mt bem aproveitado nos sons algumas musicas trazem um tom mais psicodelico
Some great songs
Symphonic pop rock, what's not to love?? Favorite track: mr. blue sky other picks: turn to stone, sweet talkin' woman, starlight, standin' in the rain
Enjoyed this a lot. Great depth of music. Mr Blue Sky is a classic and didn’t even realise they were a Birmingham band until the Birmingham Blues came on
Love this album. Way more fun than I thought as I definitely expect ELO to be a bit like Monty Python/ABBA in that you know the hits but the duds are big misses. But! Pleasantly surprised!
This album is really good. It really feels like a space trip, sometimes with the Beatles. But the music is so funny and enjoyable, and interesting too. It is such a great listening. So great, yeah.
A lot of energy in the beginning, which was fun. But then it is a bit more nice and mellow, with the bangers making it a very good ending.
Un classique (je rigole) Très bon album je kiffe bien la vibe, on nous amène quelque part dans une autre dimension. Bonne utilisation du vocoder etc. Bonne production en général. Musique pref : "Turn to stone" (bonne découverte) 4/5
Une aventure auditive...
Album très cohérent, pas de musique qui ne semble pas à sa place, et même un peu de storyline. Le style est sympa et ambiance bien, bonne expérience au global
4 estrelas
Really enjoyed this, great road trip album
another classic... definitly the 80s vibe that was great background party music.
Favorites: Turn To Stone It's Over Sweet Talkin' Woman Across The Border Starlight Jungle Believe Me Now Big Wheels Mr. Blue Sky Sweet Is the Night The Whale Birmingham Blues Wild West Hero Latitude 88 North Wonderfully western, electronic and melodious. Easy listening.
Super, vibe, wykonanie; chociaz po czasi troche malo roznorodny i sie nudzi pod koniec sluchania
Madre di dios this album is too long. That said...it's pretty great
not my favourite ELO album, but definitely a classic.
Yeah
The hits on this album are hits for a reason, but just because this album has some awesome bangers doesn't make the album that good overall. Just can't give it a 5 despite me wanting to.
Another album on the longer side. The famous song Mr Blue Sky stands out and the rest felt very similar so going for a generous four which could stick or go down with subsequent listens.
helllll yeah
Catchy songs
ELO is classic fun. I Turn To Stone and Mr. Blue Sky are two of my favorite songs of all time. I don't know if I've ever listened to this album all the way through. It got weird, but I held on, and it was worth it!
Epic, fun, lots of layers
I like what they’re doing
Belle surprise
Wow. I have sort of avoided ELO my whole life and now I know what I was missing. No idea what I expected, but it wasn't what I got. This was a very enjoyable listen with music, lyrics and arrangements that exude energy.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
Phenomenal album. This was a repeat listen for me. ELO is always worth it
Very 70s and reminds me of Queen. I like “Sweet Talkin Woman”. Really nice ending to the album with “Wild West Hero”. Very interesting album, didn’t know they made “Mr. Blue Sky” which is super recognizable.
yeah nice
A very interesting if not totally enthralling record. Kinda Beatles with a synth twist and a singular vision it feels like. I could be totally wrong but it feels less collaborative than the beatles were in some regards. I saved a handful of tracks. Everyone knows Mr blue sky. That's a certified classic. Some others are also pretty good. Some have classical DNA. Thats fun. That's it though. Its fun. Not exactly the beatles but very enjoyable. Some songs are kinda crap to me but its more than an hour long so its not that big of a deal. Pretty enjoyable stuff and woth a listen for sure
I am Groot
So many happy 70's songs on this album. I realize that I prefer ELO in smaller doses, interspersed with other music. Collectively this album is a 3, songs individually a 4. I'll round up, it's Friday.
Interesting experience: do I just think some songs are better than other because I've heard. Good album
I had heard Sweet Talkin' Woman before! Night in the city sounded like Starfox SNES. Lots of tracks sounds familiar...because MR BLUE SKY is on here. Good tracks, all very like Mr Blue SKy. A good piece. Would have to be in the mood for it.
Out of the Blue is a dazzling double album that effortlessly blends rock, pop, and progressive elements into one ambitious, theatrical package. The album’s diversity and cohesion make it a standout in ELO’s discography and a landmark of 70s music.
Very nice instrumentals, you feel the age, but still enjoy it
Out of the Blue is the album that transitioned ELO from a cool band, especially amongst college students, into a mainstream blockbuster. Sweet Talkin' Woman and Turn to Stone were both massive hits in the US and the album cover was incredibly cool for it's day. The big turn off was that it was so long. While the music is great, it's not as densely packed with great songs as A New World Record from a year earlier. Even so, it's pretty spectacular and made ELO a household name in popular music.
This album had me from the jump and held my attention the whole way through, which is surprising as I expected it to sounds the same after a while, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Some great pop songs but overlong
Very fun, too long to make me consider a 5* though
Very positive surprise!! Liked a couple of songs and added them to a playlist. Always love Mr. Blue Sky!! Very vibey when listened to while in bed at night talking about math being discovered or invented 👍
Känns som det här bandet lyckas med bedriften att vara överskattat och underskattat på samma gång. Unikt sound och även om det är lite långtråkigt ibland så finns det faktiskt tillräckligt med bangers.
di ganze zitat i dem album sind so geil!! ich ghör beatles, tina turner und gershwin‘s rhapsody in blue. s album gaht mega ab! am afang ischs mer chli zu heiter feel good und i dem sinne chli eintönig. aber s wird mega vielfältig und d musig macht eif gueti luune.
I love them!!! They have such a unique sound! I dont think it hit quite as much as all over the world i have such a soft spot but i think in the right mood the songs would hit even more i would listen again!
Enjoyable
songs that i’ve loved: night in the city standing in the rain to mr blue sky suite is absolutely amazing! also i have always loved the vocoder sound so it’s pretty fun to hear it this early in commercial music.
Fun listen
Had to get acclimatises to the whole production sound, with everything thrown at you, every effect available in the later 70s. Initially was struggling and didn’t think I was going to make it to the end, anyone mentioned that this is a long long album? Had a couple points, one being jungle that almost just quit. But to be fair by the end was into it and enjoying, that Lynn guys a bit of a Beatles fan ain’t he?? If had been listening to this since it came out may have had a long enough time to get to know and would probably love this, but I didn’t and just don’t have the time. Going to have to be 1 I missed out on 3.5 Stars
This album is pure ELO perfection. ELO has such a unique rock sound with classical and futuristic elements infused in that makes their music so exciting to listen to. Their music makes me feel like I’m in a spaceship flying through time and space because of how immersive and transportive it is. This album was full of bops and I would definitely listen to it again!
Musica para escuchar si sos un guardian de la galaxia Muy lindo la verdad, aunque algunos temas en el medio no me llamaban tanto
Electric Light Orchestra, has an unique voice in seventies rock music. They dared to make more complex structures and were so good at it that the songs remained catchy as fuck. Joy is pouring out the speakers when they pkay. Having said that, Out of the Blue is not their best, most cohesive project. Still a lot of bangers on it. Mr. blue sky is still an encredibly well know hit and it's well deserved. I'm secretly hoping their real masterpiece 'Discovery' made it to the list.
I'm gonna admit something that I feel like my family only knows: I really like ELO. I've listened to their biggest songs, some featured on this album, way more than plenty of times. I dunno what I like about them so much, I just think they're good, but I think I've only listened to one album on my own. Maybe it's because I love their biggest songs and I'm afraid that if I listen to any full album of theirs I'll realize their bad, that's something that's happened and heard opinions on other people of them finding a song from someone/some band and they look at their other stuff and it's bad. I just didn't want that to happen if I listen to ELO fully. Fortunately, listening to this 70 minute album, I did not feel that way. When the album starts with Turn To Stone, few songs late Sweet Talkin' Woman, and then the end of the third side is Mr. Blue Sky, one of my all time favorite songs, and listening to 60 more minutes of ELO, I can definitely say they aren't bad at all. So in conclusion, and as mentioned before, I really don't know why I like ELO so much, I just think they're a one of a kind band and Jeff Lynne is an underrated genius.
very familiar with the hits but never listened to the album. What a fun ride! Every song is worth listening to and several of them could’ve been additional singles. Fun, energetic, well produced and unique.
Is the difference between art rock and progressive rock just the sexual orientation of the artist?
This album feels like a train chugging, but specifically like a steam engine and each song feels like you're getting closer to some destination. A very happy feeling album.
This was a very enjoyable album, but much too long for no reason. It felt like they were padding for time with some of these tracks. "Night in the City", "The Whale", and "Birmingham Blues" were all unnecessary and could have been cut to make for a more concise and cohesive project. Otherwise, all of the songs were fantastic. The songwriting is good. The vocals, mixed with the production and instrumentation are iconic. Overall, liked it a lot. 4/5
I don’t really like the electric vibe in voices but I love electric light orchestra and will allow it!
Wow! really enjoyed this. Haven't listened to much stuff by ELO, other than Mr Blue Sky - certainly are overshadowed by that hit, as there are a lot of gems on this album. Birmingham Blues, Turn to Stone, and Wild West Hero were some good ones.
Producción excesiva, pero buenas canciones pegadizas.
Turn To Stone, Sweet Talkin Woman, Mr Blue Sky, Birmingham Blues
Well that definitely wasn’t boring. A lot going on. Made me feel like I was in a movie. I like the theatrical vibes and dreamy harmonies. Reminds me of The Beatles and Elton John.
Super fun
All hail the genius that is Jeff Lynn! I love this album, it's a bunch of bops with a really creative approach to recording.
Lindo e mirabolante! 4.5/5
Great album. I was surprised by how many of the songs I knew. Mr. Blue Sky is probably the most famous of the songs, but it’s a solid listen and I want to get this on vinyl now
i've been loving my fair share of ELO singles so i think it's a bit late to get around to an album. but whateva man im doing it now. could this have been condensed into a single album? probably yea. does Electric Light Orchestra's sound tickle my ears better than any other late 70s pop? also probably yea. still only my second favorite progressive pop album from the late 70s with this album title. Blue Gene Tyranny takes precedence. deserves to be one of the 1001? yes. maybe another album of theirs could be on here too but i haven't explored their catalogue enough to say
I have never listened to an EOL album only the hits on the radio. What a great album!
Pretty darn good album.
