MR BLUE SKY!
I cannot find any reason to give this less than a five.
Classic. Top of the line.
Turn to Stone
Best and First Album i got
The first ELO album I owned and wore out several copies. Such recognizable and solid rock
Out Of The Blue is one of the outstanding rock/pop albums of all time. Jeff Lynne delivers musical expressions of love, heartache, promise and bliss in an orchestral masterpiece acrisd vocals, music and arrangements. A defining album of the late seventies.
You already know ELO gets a five star. No notes.
Sweeping harmony
Great songs! Amazing album! Rather impressed!
used to be obsessed with this band in like october time, unfortch my favourite song by them is not on this album but that is okay!! my faves on this album were standin' in the rain and obviously mr. blue sky. i just love their sound a lot.
Grew up listening to this album . I enjoyed some of the songs. Wolf
All bangers! Oles is wrong!
10/10 For this album being made in 1977, it sounds so fresh and exciting to hear in the 2020s decade. All the instrumentation is so triumphant and pleasing to hear. After taking a long break from hearing Mr. Blue Sky, coming back to it made me recognize its timelessness. ELO killed this album and made me appreciate prog rock more as a whole.
I really wanted a clear-cut 5-star album for my first 5-star, but alas that's not quite what this is. While entertaining, surprising, and generally a very fun album, there are some low points that made me have to think really hard about giving it 5 stars. In the first two-thirds, every song has a new surprise and it doesn't miss. There wasn't a specific song that was jaw-dropping, but on aggregate the album is just such a cohesive journey. Unfortunately, the last third of the album starts to wander and the quality slips. Ultimately, it's better than Bryter Layter at 4.5 stars due to its variety in sound while maintaining cohesion, so it deserves the 5 star label in that regard. An imperfect but nearly-there 4.75-star album, meaning we have our first 5 star album! - Despite having a Beatles sound at times, they have their own contemporary twist. Even when similar, it's distinguishable from the Beatles - Even the artistic dissonant-sounding moments feel whimsical and lighthearted (not noise for the sake of noise or pretentious 'artsyness'). This band just sound like they're fun to be around - 'Standing in the Rain' is another example of an entirely new-sounding song that grabs your attention, without feeling out-of-place on the album as a whole - The last 1/3 of the album in general is a bit weaker, up-and-down - 'Mr. Blue Sky' is one of those songs you've heard a million times without even realizing it (1 billion streams)
It may have dragged a little at the end but I’m rounding up because ELO just puts me in a good mood.
I’ve always seen ELO as a really unique, standalone band. While I’m not familiar with all of their albums from front to back, I’ve heard a lot of their music over the years, and I’ve always appreciated how they have tracks that range from straightforward, pop-inspired soft rock to grand, orchestral ballads, and even some experimental, synth-driven songs. One thing that stands out to me is how ELO’s strong use of strings and orchestral elements gives them a very full, rich sound that’s incredibly colorful.
This is a fantastic album which is perhaps just a little too long. I don't believe any album needs to be over an hour. The album is split into 4 parts. Part 1 is good. Part 2 is hit and miss with Jungle being a highlight but a couple of songs could have been cut here. Part 3 is fantastic and is concluded with Mr. Blue Sky which is one of my favourite songs of all time. I did always wonder why the song sort of changes into something else for the last minute or so and now I realise it's because it's part of a larger concept. Part 4 starts with the second best song on the album, Sweet is the Night, but then goes into a 5 minute whale noise instrumental which feels like the music they play at the end of a musical when everyone is leaving. This is followed by Birmingham Blues which is good but sounds suspiciously like Rockin All Over the World (released a couple of years prior) to me. The album ends with Wild West Hero which is a good song but I don't think it works too well as the closer for an album with this scope. I think they could have moved Sweet is the Night to part 2 (cut Believe Me Now) and got rid of part 4 and it would have been both shorter and better overall as well as being able to end on Mr. Blue Sky which has a great outro. Despite the criticisms, I find it hard not to give this album a 5. You can feel the passion and genius that went into it. The production is fantastic and it just sounds good.
This would be an album I'd recommend for someone trying to find a classic rock sound.
Fantastic album, great hits that I already knew, but deep track gems abound as well
Absolute classic album. Packed with all time great songs.
nice one, Pink floyd/queen alike
very cool losers I loved it final rating 9/10
Wow, this was really great. I didn't expect much but this is pretty amazing 70s pop music, I loved the electronic parts and especially jungle
Halfway through checking in, I'm already loving this. Although im working while listening, there are moments where I have to pick myself up and just listen. Wow.
Perfect prog pop album
I knew some of the singles and j remember my parents having some ELO albums when I was a kid (those futuristic space jukebox albums covers really stuck in my mind). This was an incredible listen. I’m more familiar with Jeff Lynne’s work with the Traveling Wilburys, but I’ve really been won over by the whole ELO sound. It sounds like music from the future without being hammy. I can feel the influence this band has had over so many modern musicians, and I can’t imagine how wild this would have sounded when it released. I listened to it 3 times yesterday, an easy 5 star for me.
i haven't been able to find a good source for John Lennon saying that Electric Light Orchestra were the "sons of the Beatles", but if they were in any way Beatlesque, they clearly didn't come from any member's loins but Paul's. of course, this discounts their admiration for the Beach Boys, the Kinks, a little glam rock, and a jumble of soul references put through a symphonic filter and let loose with all the colors of the rainbow. basically, they took all the influences they could carry, glued it together, and put it on the wall. however, unlike a lot of collages, it doesn't feel piecemeal or abstract; rather, it feels like Jeff Lynne made something wholly new from chopped up reference. it's only when you get closer when you start to notice all the little bits the songs are made of -- and Lynne knows it. in "Across the Border", he's clearly biting from Heroes and Villains, but then puts a little twist in it with the second half, denying the audience the ability to call it a rip wholesale and lets us in on the joke. "Mr. Blue Sky" offers a very McCartney-like radio announcer to bring us into the song before hitting us with the piano break from A Day in the Life to start us off. and on "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Starlight", you can just make out half the Motown roster through the violins and vocoders. still, there's something brazenly original to how ELO does things. the melodies hold so much more sentimentality to me, maybe a bit corny, but also sweet and lush. maybe the back up singers are just that powerful of an instrument, a cue for your heart to put value into the interplay of the chorus and the leading man. there's a few failed experiments like "Jungle" and "Birmingham Blues", but there's more experiments that went completely right like, well, the entirety of "Concerto for a Rainy Day". that C-side feels less like any sort of musical thing and more like a substance, golden and ambrosia-like in consistency. there's something about this damn band, man. phenomenal stuff. ELO rocks.
Really liked it, made me feel nostalgic, enthusiastic, happy.
this is the type of album i needed to hear today. “turn to stone” was such a fun song. the instrumentals on this album are majestic. especially on “across the border”. every song is just SO CUTE!! “birmingham blues” def sampled rhapsody in blue (good thing). can you tell i liked the instrumentals? yeah probably a 5/5. really great.
What an epic experience. Loved it.
One of the first questions when I see a double album is would this be better if they trimmed it down to make one amazing record? In this case, I don’t think so. I don’t think you could lose a single song from the concerto for a rainy day and that’s a whole side right there. I do think we suffer a little from streaming this rather than having the physical album to help define how each side of this album fits together. The first side kicks off with like 5 bangers in a row. Turn to stone tells you everything you need to know about what you’re in for - orchestral strings mixed with rock n roll, an electric light orchestra if you will. I love the horns in across the border and the almost doo-wop sweet talking woman before it. Side two is a little more varied in sound, but still unmistakably ELO. A little disco here, little soft rock here, whatever Jungle is too. I think this side adds great variety and is where I’m going to continue to find some of my favorite deep cuts from this record. Now if we had the physical vinyl of this we’d have a short break while changing the record before we hit what might be there MO - the concerto for a rainy day. I need this on vinyl because I could wake up and just listen to these next 4 tracks and they make a great little unit within the overall record. Out this batch I have to say Mr. Blue Sky is still my favorite, and is one of the best songs from the 70s overall imo, but Summer and Lightning was new to me and is a close second. By side 4 we’ve listened to a lot of ELO but they aren’t out of ideas yet, sweet is the night is so soothing, even with its melancholic, yet hopeful lyrics. We do get what might be the only cuts from the album I’d make here with the whale and Birmingham blues but even then I don’t mind these. Wild West hero is kinda funny, wants to be a little cowboy on the prairie roaming around - I like it. Yes I felt the need to go through each side because I get the ELO fatigue that can happen on this record but it’s such a landmark of the 70s rocksphere that I think it deserves it. I haven’t even mentioned the vocoder yet, but yeah it’s there and it’s great. And look at that giant spaceship on the cover - was that just a 70s thing? I’m into it. There’s only a couple of other double albums that I think match this - London Calling being one of them, can’t wait for that one and Songs in the Key of Life as well. Anyway my review is now the length of this ELO album. 5/5
Love. Their best. Happy joyful memories come back.
No skips
Love ELO they just make you feel good
Good albumliked the groove
A+ on the inclusion of those mariachi players on Across the Border. The Whale feels like they were trying to channel some Pink Floyd from the Dark Side of the Moon era.
Back to back 1977, and back to back 10 outta 10 albums (this and Muddy Waters Hard Again). From Blues legend to Blue sky. Class.
Could not Stream it.
Might sound like it's from the 60s, but I love this. Each side has something to offer.
Easiest 5 stars for me. I have this album. It has no weak songs, in my opinion. Most of the songs are catchy as hell. I love the orchestration. The backing vocals are so charming! It even has my favourite ELO song: Wild West Hero
Fantastic!
Album #400!!!! I see why they named themselves Electric Light Orchestra because this album sounds like a score. Carefully crafted and everything was placed meticulously in the perfect place. This is what I imagine being in a good mood while on a walk during a sunny day sounds like. Which perhaps is the reason why they named this project Out of the Blue. Classic album with classic records, I love when this project gives me back to back classics!
I feel like they should have put "It's Over" first so that it could all just be over before it begins and the album can get on with it. But srsly... great album! Creative songwriting, great instrumentation, great melodies and vocals (love the harmonies). I listened to this 4 times and I like it more with every listen!
very fun! almost all of it I would listen to again
Marvellous.
This album is a work of art! All the songs are true epics, everything sounds incredibly grand! I enjoy listening to this album every time I vaguely forget how mind-blowing music can be! 5 stars of course.
Iconic album
Yes Lynn loves The Beatles very much but who can blame him?
Okay, I genuinely don’t understand why people are hating this one. Sure, it’s extra as hell and it’s a little long, but it’s SO FUN. I’m surprised ELO doesn’t have a rock opera. It feels like they’re begging for it. And I would listen to the shit out of it.
I love this album and ELO! Favorite songs are Sweet Talking Woman and Mr Blue Skym
ELO isn’t prog rock. It’s Prog Pop.
I'll call this a 4.5 rounded up. It's a bit long and I imagine several songs come across as repetitive, seeing as, dynamic as they are, ELO has a bit of a signature, consistent sound. However, the album is still jam packed with hits.
Solid, besides Mr. blue sky, I had heard of Telephone line from another album of theirs and was expecting greatness and was not disappointed, alot of variety in sounds which all sound cheery and good. Really good sounding band all round.
groovy
I loved this album. I loved the fun sound it had, how catchy most of the songs were, and of course, Mr. Blue Sky. Only reason it doesn't get a 5, is for it being a little longer then I'd prefer, but it was worth the hour and ten most of the time. 4.75 Favorite Songs: Turn to Stone, Sweet Talkin' Women, Across the Border, Starlight, Mr. Blue Sky, Birmingham Blues, Wild West Hero Least Favorite: The Whale
Amazing
Very VERY Beatlesesque, but damn does ELO do it justice. Absolutely killer and catchy tunes which make up for any slog this album has through its runtime. "The Whale" especially surprised me, that was absolutely beautiful
Honestly have a tough time deciding my favorite ELO album. This feels like the easy pick, the iconic artwork and a fair bit of their biggest hits. There is a decent amount of filler on here that are fine but I would’ve been fine with being removed. I still think I got to give a 5 in case this is the only ELO Rating: 4.6
Obsessed
So fire, trippy and lovely
Amazing
Amazing album with some catchy, popular, famous songs that will remain awesome forever.
Aww
Really great album. I love progressive pop and art rock and orchestral pop/rock and this is such a great example of the genres. An album that sounds both of its time and futuristic, this is just a stellar achievement for Jeff Lynne that still rocks to this day. I remember pumping gas once maybe 10 years ago and hearing Mr. Blue Sky blasting on the gas station speakers, with its full extended instrumental outro. Magnificent.
Great listen, front to back
Incredible spin! So many good songs and the production in on point as well. I might very well be returning to this one.
Amazing album
- The weakest songs on this release would make a great album ...... -
HELLLLL YEAH!
Love these guys so much. Their big symphonic style is unique and had to be super influential.
Out Of The Blue is a good title for this because while I'm familiar with the hits, there's some unexpected favorites on this that blew me away. Steppin Out, Standing in the Rain and Big Wheels is an incredible stretch of songs.

This would be a good soundtrack for a new Austin powers movie
truly electric
classic
There are countless standout tracks here that would easily be huge hits for any other symphonic/prog rock bands, yet here pale in comparison to the pop-single trio of Turn to Stone / Sweet Talkin' Woman / Mr. Blue Sky. It's easy to lose track and dismiss half these "filler" songs for bloating the album's runtime. But then you listen closer and realise that lesser-known tracks like Summer and Lightning, Steppin' Out, and Night in the City are pretty darn sick. The same applies to just about every song on this monster of an album. The record is incredibly diverse and yet maintains this homogeneous "soft wall of sound" feel. The vocals are a big contributor to this sound, being mixed non-overbearingly and meshing really well with the synths and strings. The whole album feels light, pillowy, hopeful. Clearly Beatles-inspired, though a little more laser-focused on their style than the Beatles (who were more experimental in terms of genres). There could be more emotional ups and downs on the album. And maybe the vocal and string melodic lines are a bit artificial and predictable. But even those are a stretch as far as criticisms go. There isn't much to criticise – Out Of The Blue is just that darn good. 5/5 Key tracks: Turn to Stone, Night in the City, Jungle, Mr. Blue Sky, Sweet Is the Night
Mr. Blue Sky is one of my all-time favorite songs. I don't care how popular it is, I absolutely love it. 5/5
I love this album. So many fantastic feel-good tracks!
An incredibly inoffensive 70 minutes of beautifully produced, over-indulgent rock that I've ever heard. ELO wants to take every nook and cranny of your aural orifices and jam them full of audio. Is this Lynne's masterpiece? I'm certain it is. Is it something I'm going to return to? Probably not. I'm torn in my rating. This is one of the most 70s things ever produced in music. It masterfully represents the crossroads of pop, rock, and the burgeoning electronic scene. And just look at Lynne! If anything screams 70s, it's that man's look.
Yah Nice!
I have loved this album since I was a kid and the magic of it has never worn off. Mr. Blue Sky, Turn To Stone and Sweet Talkin' Woman are elite tier songs that never get old to me, no matter how many time I've heard them. There are also some deep cuts on this album that I love, such as Starlight, Jungle, and Summer & Lightning. Even the few filler tracks are non-skips for me. This album rules and if you don't like it you just need to listen to Mr. Blue Sky again and cheer the fuck up, loser!
i fsr kinda bounced off this when i heard it a few years ago but idk what was happening other than maybe i was overwhelmed by the embarrassment of riches FHJFS. so monumental it kinda freaks me out...one of those double albums thats not this long for such pedestrian reasons as Wanting To Make A Big Statement That Requires A Lot Of Space but simply due to the fact that apparently jeff lynne was waking up just accidentally coughing out genius musical ideas every morning and he had to put them down somewhere. the effect is certainly inherently exhausting, ur eating a whole rich cake by urself in one sitting, but no quibbles can be had with the cake itself. all the harmonic elements make me feel like im swimming in them, all the arrangements are attuned to maximum color, half the lyrics feel like childhood daydreams treated with the gravity of the world's proggiest rock opera. something truly elemental here. i need to hear way more ELO
I had the chance to see ELO a few months ago and most of these songs live are incredible. The story behind “Concerto for a rainy day” and the move from Steppin’ Out to Mr. Blue Sky really is incredible. Great album.
Odlican
Apparently I know the opening track. I really don’t know what ELO that I knew. So far this is great. On track 4. This album is great. I love everything about this album so far.
What a fantastic album! From memory, Jeff Lyme has never actually been able to read music, but he sure can play a mighty fine assortment of instruments. Love it.
I know this one well. Gorgeous production and lovely songs, although I do think it starts off strong and falters towards the end. Still a fantastic record though and one I will come back to. 4.5
High quality
If you couldn't give this 5 stars you may have an ear infection
Can’t go wrong with ELO. Long album but an easy listen.
Gee, I really enjoyed this. I felt like I should have known it more, and that it was a special discovery. Yes the Marvel movies use of ELO flavoured that, but I always thought there was something to them even when I couldn't find them on the airwaves or in the record/tape/CD shop.
I TURN TO STONE WHEN YOU ARE GONE I TURN TO STONE Una de las mejores piezas de Pop que he oído. Me pone feliz, a bailar, a imaginar planetas lejanos.
A meticulously produced and truly epic and cohesive orchestral pop-rock masterpiece. One of the best albums of the 70s, and one of the few double albums that doesn't overstay its welcome.
Just great!
Somehow my favourite Beatles album
What a gorgeous perfect album. Was hesitant at first before I jumped into it - it had quite a few songs I knew but not that well - but it turns out to be up there with the best Beatles albums while being its own boss and also being a cohesive fun gorgeous whole. This is very criminally underrated I think
I grew up with this album. Have probably listened to it a few hundred times. At the time also special since it is a double LP (and therefore quite long). Today, I think it's ok. But still, there are sooo many songs on it which I really love. So it's a five.
Quel incroyable album, je frissonne à chaque fois que je l'écoute. L'orchestration est top notch, le groove est là et tu te rempli de bonne humeur à force à mesure que le double album progresse.
Amazing album, maybe a little too long and could be rearranged. But I don't know what I would cut.
Hype music for cardigan-wearers.
what a group!
You know that Autotune trend that was everywhere 15 years ago? That's Jeff Lynne's creation, from thirty-five years prior. But unlike that trend, Lynne knew when to rein in the autotune so it isn't so overwhelming. Electric Light Orchestra were electronic pioneers but used rock and pop to make it accessible. They sure created some catchy songs, like the electronic chorus in "Sweet Talkin' Woman"! Lynne created a beautiful album that has highs and lows--but most importantly has bangers, some of ELO's most iconic songs. But even the songs that weren't hits were great and engaging. ELO never shied away from pure instrumental songs, and this album was no exception. The instrumentals aren't throwaway songs but are engaging and impactful. I was struck by how similar to a musical Out of the Blue is. Its creation was purposeful, to the point that the position of each song was carefully determined. One motif in particular popped up multiple times, and it was a chord from "Mr. Blue Sky." This connected the album musically but ensured the listener could connect the themes, too.
ELO holds a sentimental value to me, i bought this album for my mom as a present as a child. The combination of slow pop-rock, string orchestras and vocal harmonies really hits me strong. it's easy listening music, for some it might be a bit boring. But the album also has some of their big hits like Mr. Blue Sky
I like it very much! Perfect album! It is very melodious. Vocals are brilliant! Every track is a Masterpiece.
This is like the 5th best Electric Light Orchestra album, and yet it's still getting the maximum rating. I know why this one is on here though, it obviously has the "Concerto For a Rainy Day" suite, you can't really argue with "Mr Blue Sky". I do think something like "A New World Record" or "Time" are better albums all around though, because this one is a little overlong and some songs are a bit forgettable, in comparison to the all killer, no filler albums I rank above it. You have an impure soul if you're rating this under 3 stars. I'm sorry, I don't make up the rules.
Disco with classical instruments? You son of a beautiful woman, I'm in!
Sooooo much better than the first time I listened to this. There's something just so correct about Jeff Lynne's songwriting, you put on a song and go yep, that's a song right there, it's got everything I need. About as simple as that, this album is a joy
WOW
Fun fact: This was the first album I ever bought on CD. This was my favorite album for a long time, but it's been out of my rotation for a few years now. I'm stilling giving it a 5/5 because I feel I'm obligated to do so but it's not really the kind of stuff I listen to these days. The Vibe: You are zipping through space at a zillion miles an hour to see a performance of Beethoven's 9th, which is being played on one of Saturn's moons.
Dikke dikke vijf sterren.
"Out of the Blue" by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is a landmark album showcasing a rich blend of orchestral arrangements, lush harmonies, and a sophisticated mix of rock and pop. As a producer, engineer, and writer hybrid, there are many layers of musical theory, production techniques, and compositional choices that can be both insightful and inspiring. ### 1. **Complex Harmonic Structure** - **Extended Chords and Non-Diatonic Modulation**: Jeff Lynne often uses **extended chords** (7ths, 9ths, 11ths) and **non-diatonic modulations** to create rich harmonic textures. In "Mr. Blue Sky," for example, the song moves through unexpected key changes that maintain a bright and uplifting character, often modulating through keys like F major, Bb major, and C major. - **Writing Insight**: For a writer, using extended chords can help add color and complexity to an otherwise simple progression. The clever key changes in "Mr. Blue Sky" contribute to a feeling of constant movement, making the song unpredictable and engaging. These modulations also provide contrast between sections, adding to the song's narrative and emotional arc. - **Production Note**: For a producer, ensuring these harmonic shifts are clean and coherent requires careful arrangement, especially with orchestral instrumentation. Each modulation needs orchestral voices to align properly to avoid dissonance that isn’t intended. ### 2. **Orchestral Arrangements in a Rock Context** - **Layering Strings, Brass, and Choirs**: ELO's signature style blends rock with orchestral instrumentation—strings, brass, and choirs. In songs like "Sweet Talkin' Woman," the strings are not merely in the background but actively participate in creating the harmonic rhythm and sometimes even take over melodic duties. - **Engineering Insight**: Balancing a rock band with an orchestra requires an astute understanding of frequency management. Strings and guitars often occupy similar frequency ranges, so panning decisions and EQ are critical. In "Out of the Blue," orchestral strings are frequently layered with guitars, but each instrument's part is arranged so that they complement rather than compete. Cutting low mids on the strings helps them sit well with electric guitars. - **Production Insight**: These arrangements use a combination of **counterpoint** and **layering** to provide both movement and depth. For example, each string line might serve a distinct purpose—one line playing rhythmic stabs while another plays a counter-melody. Understanding how to layer these elements to create a coherent wall of sound is crucial. ### 3. **Use of Ostinatos and Hooks** - **Repetitive Motifs and Hook-Driven Writing**: Many tracks feature **ostinatos**—repeating rhythmic or melodic motifs that drive the song forward. The opening of "Turn to Stone" is characterized by an infectious, repeating synth and guitar line that underpins the entire verse, giving a sense of urgency and excitement. - **Writing Perspective**: An ostinato can provide a hypnotic quality to a track, making it instantly recognizable. Jeff Lynne’s use of these motifs is a reminder that repetition, if done effectively, can be the foundation for memorable hooks. Writers can use ostinatos not only in melodic parts but also in rhythmic sections to build cohesion across different sections. - **Production Insight**: Producing such hook-driven tracks requires ensuring that the ostinato stands out. In "Turn to Stone," compression is likely used on the repeating motifs to keep them prominent without overpowering the vocals. Each repetition is also slightly varied with automation—changing the EQ or the level to keep the ostinato evolving. ### 4. **Layered Vocal Harmonies** - **Choir-like Harmony and Vocoder Use**: Songs like "Mr. Blue Sky" and "Jungle" utilize dense, **choir-like vocal harmonies**. Jeff Lynne employs multi-tracked vocals, often creating lush, Beatles-esque harmonies that are both uplifting and ethereal. The use of a vocoder in tracks like "Mr. Blue Sky" adds a futuristic, robotic character that contrasts with the warmth of the human voice. - **Writing and Arrangement Insight**: For a writer, these harmonies are a critical component of ELO's sound, adding emotional depth and grandeur. Harmonizing in **thirds**, **fifths**, or even more complex intervals can enhance the richness of a melody and make choruses feel more powerful and climactic. - **Production Techniques**: As a producer and engineer, capturing this kind of vocal harmony requires meticulous attention to panning and reverb. Vocals are often spread widely across the stereo field, using subtle panning variations to give the harmonies more space. The use of tape delay on individual vocal layers helps create a thick, lush texture that feels expansive without sounding cluttered. ### 5. **Contrasting Rhythms and Rhythmic Experimentation** - **Polyrhythms and Syncopation**: "Jungle" incorporates various **syncopated rhythms** that reflect its title, using percussive sounds that create a groove almost independent of the underlying 4/4 beat. This contrast in rhythms gives the song a unique feel, almost hinting at world music influences while still maintaining its pop-rock core. - **Engineering and Production Insight**: To make polyrhythms and syncopation work in a mix, it’s crucial to prioritize rhythmic clarity. This might mean using EQ to carve out space for each percussive element or panning different rhythmic components to distinct areas. The key is ensuring each rhythmic layer feels like it contributes to the overall groove, rather than creating muddiness. - **Writing Considerations**: Syncopation helps keep even repetitive sections engaging, as it plays against the listener’s expectations. This unpredictability is one of the tools Jeff Lynne uses to add forward motion to his compositions, and it keeps the listener on their toes. ### 6. **Effective Use of Dynamics** - **Soft Verses and Explosive Choruses**: ELO masterfully uses **dynamic shifts** to differentiate sections of their songs, such as in "Sweet Is the Night." Verses are often relatively sparse, with soft vocals and minimal instrumentation, building up to large, lush choruses with full orchestration and vocal harmonies. - **Engineering Insight**: Capturing this dynamic range in the studio means strategically using compression but not to the point of squashing the natural rise and fall of the performance. Often, automation plays a key role—slowly increasing gain on the strings or guitars as the chorus approaches to enhance the natural crescendo. - **Production Insight**: The shift from a soft verse to an explosive chorus is made even more effective by reducing or removing elements in the build-up—stripping back instrumentation before allowing it to flood back in during the chorus. For example, Jeff Lynne might mute backing vocals and hold off on the strings for the verse, then reintroduce them in full force for the chorus to maximize impact. ### 7. **Synths and Electronic Elements in Orchestration** - **Analog Synth Layers**: "Standing in the Rain" and other tracks use analog synthesizers to add a futuristic, almost sci-fi atmosphere. These synth parts often play in unison with the strings or brass, adding an electronic sheen that contrasts with the acoustic elements. - **Production Note**: Balancing analog synths with orchestral instruments requires careful frequency separation. Often, the synth is used to add body in the low-mid range, while orchestral strings take care of the upper harmonic content. Understanding how to blend the warmth of analog synths with acoustic elements without them clashing is key to achieving ELO's characteristic lush sound. - **Engineering Insight**: Adding modulation effects like chorus or flanger to synths can help integrate them more smoothly with orchestral strings. Additionally, reverb and delay settings can be matched between synths and orchestral elements to create a unified space where both electronic and acoustic textures coexist seamlessly. ### 8. **Concept Album Approach and Thematic Cohesion** - **Unified Motifs Across Multiple Tracks**: "Out of the Blue" is considered a semi-concept album, with many songs sharing thematic elements, such as the **weather-inspired suite** on side three (including "Mr. Blue Sky"). Motifs and themes recur, providing cohesion across different tracks. - **Writing Insight**: Recurring motifs, whether melodic, lyrical, or rhythmic, help build a sense of unity throughout an album. As a songwriter, this can be a useful tool for creating a larger narrative arc. Repeating musical themes across songs or within a suite allows you to link disparate pieces together. - **Production Consideration**: From a production standpoint, maintaining a consistent sound palette across related tracks (e.g., using the same string patches, reverb settings, or synth tones) reinforces this cohesion. It can also help listeners feel they are part of a larger journey, enhancing the album experience as a whole. ### Conclusion "Out of the Blue" is a sophisticated blend of rock, orchestral arrangements, and electronic elements, showcasing Jeff Lynne’s ambitious approach to songwriting, production, and arrangement. For a producer, the meticulous layering of instruments, creative panning, and frequency management are crucial lessons in how to make a dense mix feel expansive and balanced. For an engineer, capturing both the power of rock and the subtleties of orchestral dynamics requires precise microphone placement, EQ choices, and modulation effects. For a writer, the use of extended harmonies, dynamic shifts, and recurring motifs provides tools for crafting rich, emotionally engaging songs.
I have to say, I really liked this one, and it surprised me. I had purchased two or three ELO albums back in the 70s, and by the time this one came out I was quite tired of them. Everything kind of sounded the same to me. I didn’t hear Mr. Blue Sky until much later in life, but really did like that one. But needless to say, I had low expectations for this record, but I really did like it a lot. Probably would give it nine out of 10, so I’ll round up to a five. If I see this used in a vinyl store someday, I’ll pick up a copy unless it’s too expensive.
An absolute gem. Transports you to a different mind state. Also you have to applaud the creative risk for combining orchestral instruments with a rock band.
ELO transports you to another world with whimsical romantic orchestral rock. Rarely is pop music this interesting and catchy.
I've been listening to ELO since i was a kid, and honestly, this is not nearly my favorite album of theirs. it's their big pop album with many of their huge hits, but i just think it's a lot less interesting than a lot of their other work. it's probably also the album that introduced me to the concept of an album being too long and having too much filler. i still love it, and comparing it to the rest of this list in general, it's gotta get a 5, but if Face the Music, Eldorado, ELO 2, etc etc were on here it'd be getting a 4 just in relation to those
Some classic tracks (Turn To Stone, Mr Blue Sky, etc)... really interesting sounds, so rich and layered.
9/10…
This was a lovely start to my day. Woke up put this on made myself coffee sat on our lawn swing drank said coffee went to Costco returned our shit ass pans went to home goods got a good ass pan and then the album ended. Long but not only did I not get bored I enjoyed the whole thing. I feel like what I do during albums impacts my opinion a lot. 8.75/10
Recognised the album for Mr Blue Sky, remembered it for all of the absolute gems in the rest of it. Sweet Talking Woman and Night in the City the highlights
It's trite, but the word that kept recurring for me was "orchestral". It's all here: soaring harmonies, string sections, killer walkdowns, and unexpected chords that redirect the songs to something even more interesting. It might be overwhelming if the songs weren't so tightly written and well-paced. This is a literal rock opera. I'd recommend the mid-album oddity "Jungle" for your classic album deep cut.
Originell, krestiv, mitreißend, nahezu perfekt! Seit langem ein Favorit in meinem Regal! Volle Punktzahl!
Otherworldly masterpiece. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius who is sadly so underrated and under appreciated. This whole album is a euphoric journey of sounds and textures that delight on a cellular level. Perfection. It is a long album, which I typically don't like, but it doesn't feel nearly as long as it is because every song slaps and it's such a flawlessly arranged album. Every tracks flows wonderfully into the next. This is one of the GOATs of classic rock and a staple for any collection.
I know I’ve said this for other albums before, but this just might be one of the best albums I’ve ever heard. The music verges on prog at times with how interesting and unusual it gets, and the vocals are absolutely pristine. The harmonies are comparable with Queen - I genuinely couldn’t say who pulls it off better as the harmonies are of very similar style and both are just so pleasing to hear. In another parallel to Queen, ELO often toe the line between pop and rock to make some beautifully catchy music. I love this album.
I absolutely loved it. Braden’s in laws are onto something here. There are a lot of times where I felt like the situation I was in impacted how I felt about an album. For this album, I was sitting outside an urgent care with a sick wife and sick baby and I loved the whole album. Very familiar-seeming. I didn’t know them before, but I knew the melodies. Excited to do some digging and see all the things they’re connected to.
Very easy to listen to and cool music.
Love this double album which always seems to play shorter than its actual ~70 minutes; great songwriting, great production. And how many bands try to channel the Beatles and fail horribly. For me its an easy 5. I can certainly understand those that don't really like it. Its Prog Pop; 2 genres that can be unpopular with a lot of people. Even I can feel the sugar buzz after listening. But it works wonderfully because its unique sound and great songwriting and arrangements. But I do have another "list" complaint: why include this album and not New World Record? NWR came 1st. It solidified their unique signature sound. Their previous albums, while good, were a more raw and fragmented. NWR spawned multiple hits. It gave us the space ship. It sold 5 million copies in its 1st year. While I probably like them equally, which one was more important?
simply fantastic music
Day 34 - July 5th, 2024 I fucking love ELO. 5/5.
Great album, time melts away for me while listening to it. Somehow sounds of the time (not a bad thing) and modern at the same time. I guess that's the meaning of 'timeless'.
So good, doesn't need any historical context or preface to slap this hard. People who have only heard "Mr. Blue Sky" are missing out big time. Love the choir vocals and 12-string sounds when they're used.
Damn I just listened to this album like 3 days ago but like a thrilling rollercoaster, LET'S RIDE IT AGAIN! This madness is so wildly baroque, but NEVER at the expense of the groove, so as far as I'm concerned, Lynn can get as wacky as he wants with the ideas and production details. Anyone complaining about this album being "self-indulgent" is wrong, Jeff Lynn has indulged me on this album experience, time and time again. If you want a stripped back rock album then by all means, AC/DC & Aerosmith are in the "A" section, head right on over, you'll have a fine time. This album has a goddamn rainbow light up space station on the album cover for fucks sake. Yes, they have many strings, "Orchestra" is in the NAME OF THE BAND. What did you expect? In the tradition of Queen, Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, ect., these are insane arrangements applied to excellent songwriting. Strip these songs back to vocals and acoustic guitar and they're still excellent songs. Isn't finding the ceiling of music production applied to great songs what we want on occasion? There's a time and place for Nirvana albums and this ain't it. This encapsulates every disco-stadium rock-coked out-Star Wars-roller skate-short shorts-level excess of 1977 in one album descending on the "great blue ship" of Earth in a massive glowing UFO emblazoned with a script-written logo that says ELO. When it comes down to it, we have to judge art on it's own merits. This means I often ask myself, what is this music "attempting to accomplish", and is it effective in this pursuit? I drop the needle on this album and it's straight up BLAST OFF TIME, while feeling all the emotions of Lynn's heartbreaks, elations, & jungle soirees, complete with talking lions. Buy the ticket, take the ride, but do so with an open mind and don't expect to come back down to Earth anytime soon.
The last album I questioned why some of these albums are on here. Not this one. Easy 5 stars.
FUCKING PHENOMINAL ALBUM.
5/5
Loved it!! Reminded me of the best parts of the Whom really enjoyed the big sweeping theatricality of it all. Def listening to more Electric Light Orchestra.
I'm an ELO fan and this album has much of Jeff's best stuff. Toe tapper all the way through.
Keep it down anyone who is swinging on this album. It's a unique sound, covers a ton of ground, is creative and uses a lot of instruments well, and is fun. That album art slams and I'm biased as hell but this should completely be on the list and is great to listen to in its entirety.
This is great. It's like they took some of what the Beatles did and elevated it a bit and made it their own. Oh,okay, I know Mr. Blue Sky. This album never lost me, on more listens I'm sure each track would grow on me. It's cohesive. Cool album cover. I didn't even realize it was a double album until it was pointed out to me. Sounds great on headphones.
Brilliant. This genre is something I never listen to and have only come across through radio play and elevators. To say the genre is tepid is an understatement. So I was shocked to find myself bobbing along and surprised by the complexity of the production and aesthetics. This guy knows music.
This is a classic. They do so much with music, and for the time it must have been crazy.
This album is like a combo of everything popular in rock at that era. Very Beatles esque
## In-depth Review of "Out of the Blue" by Electric Light Orchestra ### Overview "Out of the Blue," released in October 1977, is the seventh studio album by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Produced and written almost entirely by the band's frontman Jeff Lynne, this double album is a landmark in the band's career and in the progressive pop-rock genre. It features some of ELO's most memorable tracks and showcases the band's unique blend of rock and classical music. ### Lyrics Jeff Lynne’s songwriting on "Out of the Blue" is characterized by its mix of whimsical storytelling, introspective themes, and romantic narratives. The lyrics reflect Lynne’s fascination with space, love, and time, often using metaphors that evoke a sense of wonder and nostalgia. **Key Tracks and Lyric Analysis:** - **“Turn to Stone”**: This track opens the album with lyrics that speak of loneliness and longing. Lines like "The city streets are empty now (the lights don't shine no more)" capture the essence of desolation in the absence of a loved one. - **“Sweet Talkin’ Woman”**: A tale of elusive love, the lyrics are straightforward yet catchy, embodying the frustration and excitement of chasing a romantic interest. - **“Mr. Blue Sky”**: Perhaps the album's most iconic song, it paints a vivid picture of a joyful, sunlit day. The lyrics, "Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why, you had to hide away for so long," use personification to bring the sky to life, reflecting themes of hope and renewal. ### Music The musicality of "Out of the Blue" is a testament to Jeff Lynne’s ability to blend classical elements with rock, creating a lush, symphonic sound that was revolutionary at the time. The album features complex arrangements, multi-layered harmonies, and a wide range of instruments including strings, synthesizers, and traditional rock instruments. **Key Tracks and Musical Analysis:** - **“Turn to Stone”**: The energetic opening track features rapid-fire strings and dynamic shifts in tempo, setting the tone for the album’s ambitious scope. - **“Sweet Talkin’ Woman”**: Combines pop sensibilities with a classical string section, creating a rich, melodic tapestry that is both accessible and intricate. - **“Mr. Blue Sky”**: Known for its cheerful, orchestral pop sound, the song is built around a driving rhythm and a jubilant chorus. The use of a vocoder in the bridge adds a futuristic touch. ### Production The production of "Out of the Blue" is meticulous, reflecting Jeff Lynne’s perfectionist tendencies. Recorded primarily at Musicland Studios in Munich, the album benefits from the cutting-edge technology of the time, resulting in a polished, high-fidelity sound. **Production Highlights:** - **Layered Arrangements**: Each track features dense layers of instruments and vocals, carefully balanced to ensure clarity and richness. The strings, often a hallmark of ELO’s sound, are prominent and well-integrated. - **Innovative Techniques**: Lynne’s use of the vocoder in “Mr. Blue Sky” and other tracks was innovative, adding a unique texture that complemented the futuristic themes. - **Consistency**: Despite the album’s diversity in style and tempo, the production quality remains consistently high throughout, creating a cohesive listening experience. ### Themes "Out of the Blue" explores themes of love, isolation, and the passage of time, often framed within a cosmic or fantastical context. The album’s second disc, known as the "Concerto for a Rainy Day," is a four-track suite that vividly depicts the emotional arc of a storm, from anticipation to its aftermath. **Thematic Exploration:** - **Love and Loneliness**: Songs like “Turn to Stone” and “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” delve into the emotional highs and lows of romantic relationships. - **Cosmic and Futuristic Imagery**: Tracks such as “Starlight” and “Jungle” use space and otherworldly imagery to explore themes of adventure and discovery. - **Weather and Mood**: The "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite personifies weather, using it as a metaphor for emotional states. “Mr. Blue Sky” concludes this suite with an uplifting celebration of the return of good times after a period of gloom. ### Influence "Out of the Blue" had a significant impact on both contemporary and future music. It helped cement ELO’s place in rock history and influenced numerous artists across various genres. **Influential Aspects:** - **Symphonic Rock**: The album’s successful blend of rock and classical music elements inspired other bands to explore orchestral arrangements within a rock context. - **Production Techniques**: Lynne’s production style, characterized by its clarity and innovation, has been emulated by many producers in the rock and pop industries. - **Enduring Popularity**: Tracks like “Mr. Blue Sky” have become timeless classics, frequently used in films, commercials, and television, thereby continuing to influence popular culture. ### Pros and Cons #### Pros: 1. **Innovative Sound**: The fusion of classical and rock elements creates a unique and captivating sound. 2. **Strong Songwriting**: Jeff Lynne’s ability to craft memorable melodies and lyrics is evident throughout the album. 3. **High Production Quality**: The meticulous production ensures that each track sounds polished and dynamic. 4. **Cohesive Themes**: The album’s exploration of love, loneliness, and cosmic wonder is well-executed and emotionally resonant. 5. **Enduring Appeal**: Many songs from the album, especially “Mr. Blue Sky,” remain popular and relevant decades after their release. #### Cons: 1. **Overproduction**: Some critics argue that the album’s lavish production can occasionally feel excessive, potentially overshadowing the raw emotion of the music. 2. **Length**: As a double album, it may be perceived as overly long, with some filler tracks that do not stand out as much as the hits. 3. **Homogeneity**: Despite the album’s diversity, some listeners might find the overall sound too homogeneous, lacking the variety found in other contemporary works. ### Conclusion "Out of the Blue" by Electric Light Orchestra stands as a monumental achievement in the realm of symphonic rock. Its innovative blend of classical instrumentation and rock sensibilities, combined with Jeff Lynne’s masterful songwriting and production, make it a standout album of the 1970s. While it has its criticisms, such as potential overproduction and length, the album's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. "Out of the Blue" continues to be celebrated for its musical ingenuity and emotional depth, securing its place in the annals of rock history.
I thought this album was absolutely fantastic. I've been awake of ELO for tears but have always been ignorant of their output. Wow. Was I wrong. I actually thought Mr. Blue Sky was a Wings song. Either way, excellent.
Best album of all time? Maybe. People are saying it. Who? People. This album is conceptual without hammering you over the head with CONCEPT. Lynn is a story teller and takes you on a journey without this thing being a novel. It’s pop, but it’s orchestrated and complex. Love this album. 5/5.
one of my all time favs
I just love every song on this album. The transitions were so cool- smooth and not harsh at all. The songs were so complex and original, just no complaints.
This album is absolutely fantastic. I knew Mr blue sky, but hearing it in context made it even better. A lot of genuine bops and interesting sounds getting made. On my second listen I followed along with the wiki which had a bit of track by track info.
This is so amazing. All the effects, the instruments and mixing, the vocals and everything just fits together perfectly. 10/10. Mr Blue Sky is my favourite, probably to the surprise of nobody but yeah 5 stars
Very long but I like ELO so it was good to listen to.
Wonderfully consistent in theme and sound. I am not sure why some of the tracks made the final cut (looking at you, Jungle). Nonetheless, ELO's masterfully triumphant strings are enough to yank you out of whatever shitty mood you might be in. Overall, this receives a Blue Smiley Face :)
so so sooo good, loved forever
this one is fun!
Oh yeah that album is a cool weird thing from the 70s
ELO is always a good time.
Such a great album.
This album is pure bliss. I imagine floating around space on the album cover's spaceship while neon lights glow all around. Everyone's dancing, singing, and having a great time. I wish I could've seen ELO live in their heyday - I bet everyone was high & happy. Big kudos to Jeff Lynne & the band for making some of my favorite 70s favorites. I absolutely adore the Xanadu soundtrack & totally love this album. Will revisit this when I need a good pick me up.
I dont Need to listen to this but i WILL because ELO and Out Of The Blue is one of the best albums i adore it alongside Discovery
The 70:s-est of albums. A really good vibe with influences of Beatles and Pink Floyd in The who. First third of the record are available bops. Some solid album tracks as n Mr. Blue sky
4/12/24. I believe this is as close to a perfect album as you can get!
No skips, all bops.
Man when I saw this was 70 minutes long I kind of sighed but this was so awesome. I am just such a sucker for elo. The guff that sounds like violins is awesome and along with the backing vocals it just totally defines their sound. The album had classic elo tracks like turn to stone, sweet talking woman and obviously mr. Blue sky but the other tracks carried their own weight really nicely as well. The album was broken up very well also with shorter more instrumental tracks like believe me now. Overall super strong stuff
Fun. Thats what this album was. Plain fun. I ended up listening to this three times on Friday, so thats about as much of an endorsement as I can give. The album was poppy and light, but super progressive without feeling too showy or excessive. I could also hear a lot of their contemporaries influence in there. It felt like a big mish mash of queen, late era Beatles, and Elton John, but still its own distinct thing. My favorite song was Jungle. I listened to it twice before I realized its just one riff the whole time. Its a good riff. 10/10 A- album cover
ELO is one of the few bands that tire me out from grooving too hard. I typically listen to their greatest hits compilations and haven't listened to as many of their albums as I should have. I think almost anyone would agree, the hits from this album are absolutely electric. 'Turn to Stone', 'Sweet Talkin' Woman' and 'Mr Blue Sky' are 11/10 songs and I've listened to them hundreds of times. They assume direct control of my feet and head, forcing me to tap and bob along. A lot of the quieter hits are also fantastic - 'It's Over', 'Across the Border', 'Starlight' and 'Sweet is the Night' stand out to me. Unfortunately, the album is too long. It's got a runtime of 1h10m, and there are stretches of tracks that start to blend together. I think this prevents it from reaching the highest tiers of album heaven, even if the hits are angelic. 9/10
One of the best bands and albums of the late 70’s . Love this band and its music to this day.
Really enjoyed it! Fun music! Love love Mr. Blue Sky! 5/5
utterly amazing in every single aspect. elo is yet another band that i've adored for years, blending in poppy melodic hooks and grooves with dramatic and dreamy orchestral sounds, especially strings. i love their discography and i love this album because it's like a big ray of sunlight in the darkness. it's classy, it's fun, it's so engaging in every aspect. don't let it pass you by.
Loved it. Fun album.
What a beautiful album. Impossible to listen to without a big smile on my face.
This album hits home for a lot of reasons. Definitely worth multiple play throughs.
Just a full hour of audial sunshine. This record is the logical conclusion of the "Wall of Sound" style production, just so much going on and not a single note of it could be edited out. This is as good as pop music can get.
Grand
Very iconic music
- This is one of my favorite albums of all time, so it's an easy 5 stars from me!
Starts off with three bangers and never really lets up. Fantastic album.
A masterpiece.
I was super surprised with Out Of The Blue's quality since at first, all i really knew it for was for being the album with Mr. Blue Sky and very little else. However, it turned out that all the songs on this album (including the one i just mentioned) are all very good. There were quite a bit of surprises for me with the uses of the instruments that i never would have expected. Its albums like these that show why i love doing this project so much because it allows me to see just how good some albums that i never cared all too much about at first really are. Best Song: Birmingham Blues Worst Song: Summer And Lightning
I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. It just sounded so GOOD. I'm going to have to listen to more of their music. 5/5
Just all bangers. Excellent stuff
4 me 5 stars
Long-time favorite
I can't be objective about this album. I've been singing along since I was 6.
Great album. ELO has a unique sound - you always know when one of their songs come on exactly who it is. Starlight is a new favorite I have not heard before.
My bias is showing. There’s no way I could give this anything but a 5. My aunt was a very cool lady. She loved this album. Got to listen to this while spending time outside on a warm spring day. Reminds me of her. It’s perfect.
La utilización de los violines para llevar la canción momentáneamente a otros lugares es un recurso que le da al album un toque especial y muy particular. Es maravilloso la cantidad de climas que tiene el álbum y que puede tener una misma cancion. Standing in the rain is Halloween! Una verdadera masterpiece.
70 minutes of excellent, melodic, guitar pop goodness with lovely harmonies and lush orchestration. It's bold, it's confident and it's wonderful. Side three in particular is brilliant. Titled 'Concerto for a Rainy Day', it's a mini concept album on the theme of weather affecting mood, culminating in the classic 'Mr Blue Sky'. If the lush outro to that track closed the album it would be a perfect ending. Side 4 tails off slightly, but this album is still so good that if I had seen ELO at the Birmingham NEC in 1977, I would have been shouting with everyone else “Come back on, ELO, come back and carry on playing". Rating: 4.5/5 Playlist track: Mr Blue Sky Date listened: 07/02/24
Great album
I'm a big ELO fan, so this was an easy one. Love it!
Absolutely Tremendous!
Great memories of when I bought this album as a teen
either you get it or you don’t
While everyone has heard "Mr. Blue Sky" before, realizing that it comes from this album is such a delight. It's an incredible piece of music and it might join my regular rotation of albums. 5/5. Favorite Track: Mr. Blue Sky
Great album, fun sounds
bangers
Awesome! What a tremendously talented band. 60’s music was superior to almost every other decade!
Just great fun but also a lot of musical innovation and nuance
This album stands the test of time and keeps on giving!
A wonderful album but since I know that you are not going to publish another one I am going to give it a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ because they have better albums. Time!!!
OUTSTANDING!! So groovy and eclectic. Loved it!
Classic album - not much to be said other than I could listen to this all day on repeat. I love ELO and this album in particular is hit after hit after hit.
I adore ELO and consider “Mr Blue Sky” to be favorite song. So it should come as no surprise that I give Out of the Blue the full 5 stars. Sure, the lyrics are nothing to write home about, but they’re not really the point. Jeff Lynne is an absolute genius at crafting catchy melodies and sparkling maximalist production, and that is what this album is all about. So many classic tracks: “Turned to Stone,” “Wild West Hero,” “Sweet Talkin’ Woman,” “Jungle,” (I could go on). I love it. Chooka Chooka Hoo La Ley!
Fun album. This one improves your mood with a great beat and great sounding voices. Even the electronic stuff puts a smile on my face
Love the album found some new gems on it
Love this!
How do you even start to come up with some of these beautiful songs? So many beautiful melodies in each song, Lynn is a genius, a very weird looking genius.
We are very blessed that this exists
Had me ascending by the end
Obnoxiously chipper at times, but damn if it's not infectious.
A very constant Karen O YYY sound. Not bad, but not all too unique.
Listened to this before!
Best album fr
Have been enjoying this with my teenagers. So much positive, creative energy in this album.
Good at times
Extremely good album.
вот это разъеб алкоальбом: вино с колой (причем вино дорогое прям)
Like riding in my parents car agaib
I love ELO, but this is not my favorite album by them. A lot of their best songs are here but I think the album is bloated a bit. They could remove 5-6 songs entirely and I think it would be a more cohesive album. By the end of it their iconic sound gets weary due to the sheer length of the album. Still, I love ELO. 5 stars.
surprisingly enjoyed it turn to stone sweet talkin' woman across the border night in the city jungle standin' in the rain mr. blue sky sweet is the night the whale wild west hero
Music excellent. Singing excellent. I’ll be returning to this album. 9/10
In my mind one of the best albums of all time. Is it perfect? no. But man does the sound of this album just make my brain happy through so many different songs and sounds. The hits are of course amazing and Mr. Blue Sky is arguably one of the best songs of all time. I love ELO 10/10
peak 70s inventive and fresh right the way through 5
I've always been an ELO fan and this album is one of their best. From the opening "Turn to Stone", to "Sweet Talkin' Woman", and the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" which comprises the second half of the album and includes the song which always puts a smile on my face "Mr. Blue Sky" plus "Wild West Hero", this is a brilliant album.
Ó þetta meistaraverk! Top notch!
i seriously enjoyed this album. i'd love to own this for my collection
What an album. Has stood the test of time wonderfully, save for some of the electronic voicings on a couple tracks. The use of strings on the album takes good songs and turns them great. I don't think there's a single track on the album I don't like. I usually complain when albums get to an hour+, saying they lose focus on the material, or my attention. However, this album stays true and keeps me engaged the entire time. I don't know what else I can say other than I love this album! Fav tracks: turn to stone, night in the city, sweet talking woman, stepping out, summer and lightning, Mr blue sky, Birmingham blues
Listen to this one to turn your bad days around. Listen on your good days to make them even better.
Man, this is just so so so good. Really well produced fun rock and roll with some of the tightest, most consistent harmonies of all time. It’s weird and almost silly sometimes, but that’s what I love about its ambitious versatility. One of my rare 5s.
Gran disco con algunas joyas.
Exceptional
amazing
De todo mi gusto Temones
So many classics in this album. Turn to Stone, Sweet Talkin Woman, Across the Border, Jungle, Sweet is the Night, and Mr Blue Sky of course are some of the favorites. I don't know how they do it but they manage to mix classic rock with other genres in their songs and it just works perfectly. Definitely an all time album and one of my personal favorites. Easy 5/5 for me.
Easily one of the best yet. Clear 5

Full of great songs that I love
Really upbeat, fun album
This album is so good. So good. ELO is at their best here, and so many of their iconic songs are from this album. The way this album flows from one song to the next is really unmatched. I don’t think I’ve heard many albums that are this cohesive. The production is great too. Usually I mention favorite songs, but it’s probably easier to mention least favorites. “Jungle” is a mess and “The Whale” is a bit underwhelming, but they still fit in with the story being told by the album. I really can’t say enough about how spectacular this album is. Easiest 5 stars so far.
Probably the best ELO album-and one I have had in my collection forever. Full of classic ELO, and I think it captured Jeff Lynne at his creative peak with ELO.
Jeg tror ikke jeg hadde klart å bli lei av ELO om jeg prøvde. Kaos, på best mulig måte
Haha, wtf er dette? Is it Queen? Is it Van Halen? Is it Daft Punk? Is it Hans Zimmer? No, it's Electric Light Orchestra! Dette føles ut som "Steiner Skolen THE BAND" på den beste måten. Elsket hver sang fra start til slutt. Vilt eksperimentelt og modig, men med en energi som bare holdt meg smilende hele veien. Smittsomt album, ikke forventet.
Excited to get this album. I have never taken time to listen to ELO with much intention. Turn to Stone has a Queen-esque sound to it and it kicks this album off well. Actually a lot of this has a Queen-like sound to me. They are both 70s British rock bands so I guess that may be why. This is so good! I'm really liking this upbeat, fun, sound! Across the Border has a space alien sound and also some classic Mariachi/Mexican sound. Interesting blend! Night in the City's old video game/city traffic intro is cool. I like the deep voice in the background that comes through with Starlight and Jungle. Jungle is so upbeat and fun-makes me wanna dance. Also Mr. blue Sky is on here, which is obviously great. I think this is the first album of this exercise that I've listed to over headphones and I think it made a difference in the experience. I may try to do that more often. I really enjoyed this album.
Ja das 5 sterren he Fantastische productie Veel key changes, interessante song structure De steel guitar stem wordt schaars maar op goede momenten gebruikt Gewoon de hele theme zit echt goed Steppin out, sweet is the night, Mr blue sky zijn standouts
Their strongest, most coherent album, ELO goes all out with creative ideas, creating a prog album resembling a musical-style, constantly shifting between moods and keys within songs to tell stories. Great transitions, some themes and lyrics repeat to string together ideas, and several songs are linked together in sections. This all makes for an exciting listen to follow along, helping me get through an otherwise exhausting length. Vocals are quite Beatlesesque, mostly modeled after McCartney (and sounding really close to him at times as in "Steppin Out"), but also that Lennon-spunk and energy. I also hear several Beatlesesque melodies, which are a bit difficult to describe, but can be characterized as catchy, a bit mesmerizing, with some psychedelic twist. But overall, the synths are atmospheric, based on space rock, but strongly tied to baroque influences in terms of the grand orchestral sound it portrays in both its provocative and jubilant moments. Very few weak tracks. Almost all of them stand out in some way, and tons of deep cuts are surprisingly creative. I was fully expecting the songs to blend in, and they might if you're only being swayed by the choruses (since those are the ones that grab everyone's attention). But deep cuts like "Jungle" show they really put their all into this record. And although it's a lot to take in, I guarantee if you only listen to each quarter at a time, I'm sure you'll find all the hidden gems that could be hard if you're just normally waiting for "Mr. Blue Sky." Favorite Deep Cuts: Starlight, Standin in the Rain, Summer and Lightning, The Whale
This album is very good. I played an instrument and was part of an orchestra since I was little. I always liked the conjoint feeling and sound of every instrument. This joins this feeling with rock, making something that I didn't know I was looking for until I found it. It sounds very good, the orchestra sound with the drums and the guitar bits with the singer's voice, you have to love it. I give it a five because I have not seen anyone else do this, and I think they did it perfectly.
ELO <3
Heel lekker album, met coole cover ook! Sweet Talkin' Woman heeft leuke achtergrondstemmen Standing In The Rain is heel gaaf! En Mr. Blue Sky is een klassieker natuurlijk The Whale ook cool nummer Would (probably will) buy!
Love it
LOVE this album and wish I'd run into it years ago.
I actually had such a strong urge to listen to this album a while ago that I figured it would be a bit before I got it on the generator. That was about six months ago, so I was mostly right! This album is really great, the opening track "Turn to Stone" is such a good opener, and the album gives you that same dopamine rush throughout the album with various other tunes. It's just so fantastical, and despite the whole genre of "baroque pop" I don't think any one band has mixed orchestration and pop music this well, save for perhaps Moddy Blues' Days of Future Passed. It admittedly does lose a little steam, since the long length can make the album feel a little bloated, but they pepper in so many goodies throughout that I hardly minded, and it still holds true enough for me that this is a fantastic record.
It's a bop.
2/1001 This album is like sunshine in music form. It’s so happy and upbeat I can’t help but smile. Turn to Stone and Mr. Blue Sky are my favorites.
It's a fun, very 80s álbum that puts a smile on everyone
fast alle lieder gut, ein paar sehr sehr gut. top album
Absolutely phenomenal album from the Electric Light Orchestra! This album contains their most famous song "Mr. Blue Sky". Style is a mesh of rock music combined with classical elements along with synthesizers. Favorite songs: Mr. Blue Sky, Standin in the Rain, The Whale, Turn to Stone
Listening to this album is the same thing that receiving a dopamine injection. Pure joy, fantastic album.
Awesome album, some killer studio effects for 1977, a few trippy instrumentals (The Whale is a standout), and some great hits also.
Love the sound. Classic 70s with some great songs!
ELO!!!!!!
Very good album throughout, without any of the tracks standing out; just a constant flow of very strong tracks. Reminded me occasionally of Queen and in other places of the Beatles.
This one cooks
I grew up ELO-adjacent. I never disliked their stuff, but never went looking for it. Which is amusing because I actually own this album. Haven't listened for years and it's pretty great. And as a bonus? The cover art is a space ship docking with a giant SIMON, just like we'll be doing some day in the future!
Loved this! Vocals reminded me of the Beatles and the tunes were catchy. Will listen again.
loved it
Queen med toner av Beatles
Holds up well.
Great album
Excellent
Just a seriously awesome album. Absolutely loved listening to this. ELO are really good at building through tracks without making them overwhelming. Favorite track: Mr. Blue Sky
9/10. First album in a while where I really enjoyed it on my first time hearing it.
A super fun listen. 9/10
Five stars for Starlight alone, what an incredible piece of music
I haven’t stopped listening to this album all day. Normally 3 times is my max for an album, but it’s just so fun and I will be listening to this a lot for days to come.
One of my personal favourite albums of all time Immaculate production from Jeff Lynne The “Concerto For A Rainy Day” segment is one of the most powerful runs of tracks I’ve ever heard Personally, I feel like this also a good indicator of when ELO started heading into their disco era Favourite tracks: Turn to Stone, It’s Over, Starlight, Concerto For A Rainy Day, Birmingham Blues
This would be a 5/5 for the Kinks sample alone; it helps that the songs here are great.
Beautiful pop album that brings in orchestral elements to rock and roll. The vocals with the tenor harmonizing and up tempo backbeat drums drive the record. Is it overly produced? Possibly. The pre auto-tune auto-tuning of the voices can be annoying at times but overall it makes for a pleasant listen. The masterpiece that is "Mr. Blue Sky" unfailingly puts one in a cheery mood. "Sweet Is the Night" understated track.
I have a loose policy of not pre-listening to albums I know are on this list, if I’ve not already listened in the past. However, for some reason about a month ago, I decided I wanted to hear this album asap. I loved it and looked forward to the day the generator gave it to me. I wasn’t expecting to listen to it again so soon, but it was good listening for a Monday morning commute.
Killer
Amazing composition. Generationally talented musicians. Great music.
An undiscovered gem. I was expecting some filler with an album so long, but every song earns its place in the tracklist. A masterpiece.
WOW! I was familiar exclusively with the name of the band and their song, Mr. Blue Sky. This album might be the first album I was not at all familiar with that I've had an absolute blast listening to from beginning to end. Each song is just larger than life with galactic sounds. I was consistently transported to some kind of outer space and then brought back to Earth. However, I barely listened to any lyrics at all. For me, this entire album was just sound. Wonderful, bigger than Earth, galactic sound.
This album is pretty darn great!
Fantastic
First of all, this album is absolutely amazing. Second, I'd like to take a second to appreciate the creative and unique sound of ELO. I mean they are so recognizable anywhere because they have created a sound that no other artist has replicated. Well done on this one.
Excellent album. What’s not to like about the writing, the melodies. Strong stuff and just compare it with the tripe produced today with no quality whatsoever.
One of my favorite albums of all time
A lovely album! I will admit, I had first heard of this because of gaurdians of the galaxy, but I wish I had listened to this sooner. Each track is a joy and it feels so interesting.
Né à la mauvaise époque.........
Loved it, I didn't have the album, but listened to the music though the radio!
sweet!
Objectively, this album is probably more 4 star than anything else, but holy shit this is musical comfort food. A big fat bowl of cheesy mac, a warm blanket on a cold as balls day. It's just cosy, man, and I just can't beat cosy. I just simply can't.
Classic ELO album. I had this growing up and must have worn a hole through it as I played it constantly. Happy memories

This album has Mr Blue Sky on it. The rest of the album would have to fuck up royally for this to be worth less than 5 stars, and fucking up royally is something it manages to avoid with aplomb and panache. Synths, vocoders, wide expansive sounds with stuff going on, all seemingly designed to sound uplifting. It's a classic.
Made me forget about my worries
