1001 Albums Summary

He wrote some great songs and the arrangements on this album are good. But man who did he have around him for vocals input? Why did anyone think he should lay these tracks down with his vocals?

So good. Zero skips. Perhaps his best album. I only own Space Oddity on vinyl so I don’t listen to this one as much. Did he invent punk rock with Hang on to Yourself?!

Very good. Tempted to give it 5 stars after the first track. But a solid 4 stars overall.

I don’t know if any Black Keys albums are less than 4 stars. Solid album.

Not their best. Maybe their worst but still better by miles than anything by The Beach Boys so.

One of the best rock bands ever. And this album is one of their best.

Would be at least 3 stars if he didn’t come across so phony on just about every track. 1-2 stars. Some are listenable but most make me cringe.

Best from them? Probably. Sounds like gen x. Rock on. Probably 5 stars - very good.

Oh wow I thought this was Clapton before realizing it actually was lol maybe I remember this subconsciously from long ago or his voice and guitar is that recognizable. I like it.

I actually kinda like this. My head was bobbin. Raw, punky and fun. An influence on Jack White perhaps? I don’t know but sounds like him a little bit and some Black Keys too. Not bad.

1969 was an impressive year for these guys. An Ok album here. Short but that’s not a bed thing per se. But if this is the best of 1969 then 1970 (Cosmos Factory) is better.

I’m not a huge fan of the lo-fi thing AND they suck. I don’t know how revolutionary they were - they sound like Primus only way worse. Not quite a 1 since I didn’t hate some tracks. 2 stars.

Solid album

Love this one. One of the best of the 90s - better than anything from Nirvana (sorry not sorry).

This one was not bad. I enjoyed many of the tracks but wasn't totally taken by the album. Some of them sounded like the grateful dead which was interesting. Between 3 and 4 stars - so a soft 4.

Much too long. If it was only the originals and didn’t include all the remixes and other versions it might get more stars.

Prior to today’s listen I thought that this one is their weakest album but after another re-listen damn this is good. If this is indeed their weakest album then damn they are the greatest band ever.

I never like Kanye but I had never listened to this one. It’s good. Minus the strange, non-sensical lil Jimmy skit track, this is not pretty pretty pretty good. Pretty creative album. But maybe he shouldn’t have hated college so much and tried to learn something back then and he might not have ended up with a brain of mush today. 4 stars.

K who said the vocals were great? Cuz they aren’t. Except for the backup female vocals which are not prevalent enough to save this. The vocals alone drop this to a 2 minimum. Not good. Actually the more I listen the worse it gets.

Some good background music for a haunted house on here. This doesn’t deserve a lower rating than that Scottish folk psychedelic collective BS album I heard the other day. Don’t get me wrong, this is shite, but I didn’t skip 1 track. This has actually got some hilarious stuff on it.

An ok Jazz album. Not into it as much as others though. I like the piano parts and solos a lot though.

Angryman (track 2) was good. But track 3? WTF? Track 4 too - odd. Track 5 instrumental good. Track 6 meh. Maybe a few others were ok. 3 stars.

This is peak 80 (which means it’s not good). 80s pop is so dated and this album is no different.

Love her voice but this way too long and the songs are pretty boring. Decent background music though. Not sure how to rate this or if I can finish it by tomorrow. If you condensed it down to a normal album length selecting the best tracks it would easily be a 4 star album.

Meh. Probably one of the most overrated bands ever. Everything from 90s Radiohead and 90s Smashing Pumpkins is better than this. 🤷‍♂️ . I really don’t like the extra grungy vocals on many of the tracks. Is loving Nirvana a cult? I don’t get it. As the album progressed my rating got lower and lower. During Frances Farmer it got to maybe a 2 I dislike his vocals and the song that much. Definitely not a 4-5 star album for me. More like 2-3. Best part: drums. Worst part: vocals.

Pretty nostalgic. Growing up in a house with Gen X siblings I heard this on repeat from a pretty young age (like 5-7). That opening definitely has the feels. First 3 tracks are excellent. The remaining are mid mostly.

First track sounds like the musical child of Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, and the Allman Brothers Band. I dig the guitar on the first track. Wild West End sounds a lot like one of their other songs. I wanted so bad for this to be a 5 that I’ve never heard before. Then a 4. But I don’t know. There’s only like 2 or 3 here that I really like. Is that enough for a 4?

Baba is a 5 star song. And I will always think of Jamie Thomas’s part from Mislead Youth when Baba plays. But what about the rest of the album? The next two are fine. The song is over is 😬 though. Same with Getting in Tune. Not consistently good. Hard to justify a 4 overall for only one great song 🤷‍♂️

One of the OGs (technically Patton, House, and Johnson are but Muddy is nearly there). Just for what he gave us and who he influenced he gets 4 stars. Plus this sounds damn good for being a live recording from 1960. That would have been amazing to see live.

Very good vocals here. Overall kind of boring with a few enjoyable songs. A lot of covers so not really an album IMO but credit for bringing genuine African music to a western audience and bonus for great vocals.

Bombs over Baghdad is a 5 star track … not sure about the rest of the album though 🤷‍♂️. Also love that Chappelle quotes it in his black Bush skit 😂.

Much better than expected. The talking voice actually works here unlike his earlier albums.

I know that I’m supposed to like Neal Young and all, but oh my god his voice is so aaawwwwwful. Barney Stinson was right, he does sound like an old lady with vocal paralysis.

I’m pretty tired of these guys these days but I think the blame lies with Apple Music’s algo that keeps recommending them. I think it’s his voice. I’ll try not to hold that against this albums listen. There are songs and some riffs that make this a 4 star album. But it gets docked a star for the vocals.

This is a solid 3 maybe a 4 if I gave more time to it.

I was surprised to learn that these are all originals - no covers. There are better singers singing her songs - making them better. But good songs none the less. Don’t love her voice - but mostly great songs here with few exceptions (cough cough Tapestry cough).

Surprised by this. I have heard maybe half these elsewhere but this album was actually good. Sounds like the Beatles, some Queen in there, and others.

Groovy and strong start. But then never goes anywhere. Mid since it did have some decent sounds on the front end.

I was 12 and I rode my bike to media play to buy my first album on CD with my paper route money. This album has aged like fine wine. Still excellent.

Pretty solid debut. Not too bad considering the year and time and all that. A lot of what feels like covers of Mississippi delta OGs.

Strong start. But all downhill from there mostly. The pairing of the music and the vocals just doesn’t work for me on every track except the first.

Solid rock album with a few classics. I’m judging the music and not the people behind the music guys. It’s like hating on Wagner (who wrote some of the most amazing western music ever) cuz he was an anti-semite and was Hitlers favorite composer. It is possible to separate that from the music. 🙄

I have no idea what koolaid everyone is drinkin. This is one of the worst, most over rated albums of all time. From the first awful sounding note to the terrible, off key vocals and harmonies. It’s like a 10 year old wrote this (not a Mozart). Way too much falsetto (not good either). The lyrics are childish and not deep at all. And arrangements are like nails on a chalk board. I seriously do not get this. The only song that I can listen to all the way through is Sloop. But there’s like 7 boring songs before it. And the album cover is terrible too!

What a pallet cleanser from yesterday's album! (Pet Sounds). My favorite Beatles album (easily). And Side B (Come Together to Her Majesty) is 20+ minutes of probably the best continuous Rock ever recorded. And THAT's and album cover.

Fuckin great. Iron Maiden has become my favorite classic metal group lately. This one does not disappoint and what a debut.
