I hit play on Spotify but then I had to leave and I didn't come back until the recommendations were playing. Based on the recommendations I knew I wasn't going to like this. Just pretty boring overall. Maybe if it came out 70 years ago I'd feel differently. 2.5 stars

Pretty boring chamber pop. There's a LOT of stuff in the genre I prefer to this.

He has a very nice sort of jazzy voice but the music it is over is much less interesting than most jazz. This album did not really suit my tastes, I found it overlong, slow, and low key.

I have to really hate an album before I give it one star, and I didn't actually hate it , just found it totally bland and uninspiring. There must be reasons why someone would make such an album, and why so many people seem to like it or equally that somebody thought about including it in a list of top albums. I just cant understand them. 1.5/5 at best

Decent

I was previously unfamiliar with Hawley. It's a certain kind of mood for a certain kind of day. A certain kind of person would really get into it. I liked the progressions, but it all felt like shadow puppetry.

I didn't particularly like it, slow crooner, touching on twangy country. Nothing really memorable.

Fine. The soft, poetic singer-songwriter genre is really hit or miss for me, and this was a bit of a miss.

Kind of a big nothing

It's very tasteful, he sings well, and it won't offend anyone, but my word, it's boring and uneventful. Bafflingly, I actually bought this at the time. I Sleep Alone caught my ear, probably because it picks up the pace a bit, and has some more interesting guitar tones.

I went to Sheffield once. It rained the whole weekend and our mini-cab driver was involved in a rather unsavory incident with a traffic warden. In this context, Richard Hawley's music is joyous and exotic. Thankfully however, I'm not writing this review from Sheffield.

Loved the Longpigs the Sun is Often Out back in the 90s, this is very not that. Had this recommended a year or so ago from someone who seemed to love everything and anything that came out of Sheffield. Anyway. This is a nice, huggly sound. Kind of sounds like fellow Yorkshireman Chris Rea except good. But will I think to listen to it more than the two times I now have? Questionable. The archetypal 3/5 for me, nothing stands out, nothing to dislike. Actually a few tracks in, I realised the problem. It's really nice and cosy for a track or two. After that though, I'm bored rigid. This is on the list when something else more interesting isn't. 2/5

I don't like crooners. It's not that I don't like modern music that sounds like old music. I really dig lots of bands that do new tunes that sound like music from my parents and grandparents generation. But there's something about crooners that turns me off -- even if they sound a little bit like Mark Lanegan. Hotel Room stands out a decent track. Born Under a Bad Sign is a sweet tune reminiscent of Petula Clark swinging 60s pop.

Overall not great to ok. Hotel Room was the stand out for me.

Old school slow music

I bought this when it came out on a wave of critical acclaim but don’t listen to it often these days. It’s a really well polished take on a romantic crooners collection, but with hindsight I’m not sure exactly why he did so - it’s well sung and arranged, but ultimately feels like very high end karaoke.

The fact is Richard Hawley is not Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett or Bobby Darin or Tom Jones or Johnny Cash. If you sound just vaguely like the greats but are not one of them, you'll be judged harshly. This album sounds like cover songs and not interesting ones either.

Too retro for me. It plodded along nicely, but nothing to make me return.

While this old style country jazz period piece of an album may suit romantic entertainment by the fireside on a cold winter night, I found its initial charm fading away rather quickly. Half way through, I was rather bored.

Well I’ve herd his guitar in the longpigs and he’s good… The album opens with the title track a pleasant stroll compared to what I’ve heard of his work before. He’s got an amazing gentle ( Christmas singer sounding) voice which works for the music being done. Just like rain takes a folkier tone compared to the last one still quite well produced big band yet solo singer stuff, good. Hotel room is a lovely sounding song great but not my type of music to be honest. Next is Darlin’ wait for me another song of similar opinion it’s slightly worse just being slow without much substance for me. The ocean is cool again this dull feeling but this is just more epic and mysterious great stuff. Born under a bad sign has this slight bit pf acoustic guitar shuffling that really glues the song together, all in all it’s still the same big band lovey-dovey sounding stuff but not a bad implementation of it. Then is the folky track, I sleep alone it’s a good left turn that shows knowledge of good sequencing not my favourite not my least. Tonight is a gloomy acoustic song it’s good but like none of this album hits in the greatest way. The album goes folkier again with one of the best songs on the album ( wading through) the waters of my time it’s just relaxing well written and memorable something you want from any solo artist. The album’s penultimate track whose going to shoe your pretty feet lacks quite a bit in instrumentation just a poem with a more echoey version of Hawley’s usual vocals. It goes will with the piano based closer last orders a cold and gloomy track but it’s still one of the best songs somehow and it’s instrumental. I am gutted with this album to be honest I thought the guitarist in a rather underrated band whose best aspect was their guitars would make quite a fun album not one that’s all maturity and nothing else.

I mean, whatever. I feel like this album would be playing at an outdoor skating rink in NYC. It’s got an atmosphere and that’s about all it’s got for me.

The album was interesting as several of the songs had a retro feel to it. By retro feel, I mean it sounded like the song was from the '50s. Other songs had a country feel to it so I did not care for that. It wasn't a bad album and probably a little better than a 2 but I will round down.

Asked someone to guess when this album was released “1984. No, 1974. I really think it is 1950’s but I feel like it’s a trick question and the background guitar doesn’t sound like the 50’s”. 2005. Tried to understand why such an anachronistic album was including. Did not find the answer.

I enjoyed a few songs, but a lot of songs I didn't care for, especially the "shoe" song. Sounds like a knockoff of classy 50s/60s music with an old timey country touch at times. He doesn't have as remarkable of a voice as the great crooners he's LARPing as. Maybe I'm too harsh. I can see why others could like it. Favorite song was Born Under a Bad Sign. Last track was very pleasant too

Ok album, didn’t really like the singing

i thought the music was really interesting but man his voice… it just was not helping in any way…

I can absolutely appreciate the gentle melodies and craft involved - full stop. Even the singing is likely objectively nice. It's just that this crooning style doesn't resonate with me on a gut level at all, and especially on the more country-oriented songs. I feel a little bad giving this a 2; it's entirely a personal-preference thing; this could be someone's favourite album and I'd kind of get it but the generally laconic overall feel isn't hitting me. 5/10 2 stars

Day 12: Wasn't awful. I could see myself giving it a better rating if I listened to it in a different mood or time of day. I did enjoy most of the songs but felt that a lot of them fell into the background and didn't really interest me. Favourite Song: The Ocean

Sounds like a smooth soundtrack to a straight to TV Christmas movie. Well produced but not for me.

I found the album a bit boring. No songs really stood out from the others.

This sounds like my grandparents music, sad guy on a piano singing about love and loss. Very slow, voice is ok but doesn't really stand out in any way. The opening song definitely sets a really unexciting tone, some of the later songs pick up a bit but they go from like a 1 to a 3 out of 10 max. Everything about it just seems like a very generic version of what's happened long ago. Like an AI was tasked with generating an album after listening to Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and any other 50s guy that just sings slowly. This is what that AI spat out.

Wow, mys! Efter lite dåligt engagerad lyssning under gårdagen slog jag återigen igång albumet när jag skulle cykla hem från tandläkaren. Öppningsspåret "Coles Corner" passade så jävla väl in i det lummiga där jag cyklade. I de gamla Sala Backe-trakterna och det var så höstigt, så höstigt på ett drömmigt sätt. Löv på träden, i luften och till sist på marken. I den där goda orangea färgen som får en person att bli varm rakt igenom. Fortsättningsvis flyter cykelturen och musiken isär något. Musiken blir lite tråkigare i takt med att jag kommer in i centrala staden. Stressen av att agera som en bil i trafiken på min cykel går inte hand i hand med det gosiga soundet. Men det var en fin upplevelse så länge det varade. Bäst: "Coles Corner"

I thought that The Ocean was fine, but outside of that I mostly was just super bored. I caught myself nearly falling asleep at one point. Couldn't get through the whole thing, bailed near the end.

Sleepy, gentle, a little twangy (new age folk), nice instrumentals, but didn't stand out as anything special. I'd had enough by the end, though - really droned on.

I kind of had to waffle and figure out how mad I am at this. I do think this is being earnest, and I don't have anything against Richard Hawley, but "Sinatra impression over boilerplate easy listening revival" is kind of a recipe for music that I just fucking hate. And I would like to say that I *do* like Sinatra himself. But when a modern artist tries to do the same thing, it just sits wrong with me. I also think that the songs here have too little movement to be interesting, and too little innovation to be groundbreaking. I also can't really connect with any of these songs emotionally, at least to an extent that would help me get into this thing. I really can't see who this is for aside from people who listen *exclusively* to easy listening and countrypolitan. The Ocean is probably the best here, even though it ends up a little melodramatic. And I think I Sleep Alone and Tonight are also alright, but they are still kind of a slog. But everything else just has me watching the clock as it melts into an unspecific puddle of easy listening goop. I feel a little bad, because I do think Hawley is doing what he likes, but I just dont enjoy spending time listening to this.

I'm sure he is talented but I just found it a boring listen. I sometimes liked his guitar work. His voice is soft and low but stylistically there was nothing engaging in his singing. Some of the lyrics were well turned phrases but overall just too sleepy for me.

Put it on while doing some house cleaning. It was okay for that. Mostly it reminds me why I don't smoke dope and sit around in my underwear giggling at nothing for hours on end. Bailed on it way before the halfway point. This ain't my cup of tea.

Unedited Notes: I made it through FIVE whole tracks of this album before I turned it off. Do I win a prize? I don't think that they even play this kind of music in nursing homes anymore. A Michael Bublé album would be far more hip and relevant to popular culture than this. This album makes The Carpenters sound like Atari Teenage Riot.

The UK 🇬🇧 centric nature of this list rears its ugly head once again with a vanity project from a side musician in Pulp, a band who is inexplicably acclaimed. I played this for several people who agreed that it is NOT in fact on par with someone like Chris Isaak, and is a lame derivative of the source material (Roy Orbison and Elvis were sacreligiously mentioned). Once again: style before substance. The consensus was ”this sucks,” and I’m glad my squad backed me up on that opinion.

I've never heard of this chap so this would obviously be new to me. Let's GO! Hmm, is he a modern Frank Sinatra-type? A modern crooner? Track 1 suggests yes. Interesting. Track 2 picks up the pace a bit. Pretty guitar on this one. Track 3 is what they would call "romantic pop" I guess. Heartfelt to be sure. Track 4 manages to slow things down a bit. If he were American I imagine he would have leaned into that old country and western scene. Track 5 is another slow jam. His voice has dropped a register. I think I prefer his regular register. Track 6 made me wish I was listening to Albert King. Sigh Track 7 is a tad jauntier. Lots of emotion in these songs. Track 8 slows it right down. Too much of the same from this fella. Track 9 IS a straight up country song. I guess more of an Irish-type folk song but I like this one more than most so far from the album. Track 10 slows things way back down. Not my style at all. Track 11 is an atmospheric end to the album. Pretty. Overall this did not vibe with me. I'm sure its good in certain circles but I will not be listening to it again. 1/5

It is better than forcing myself to listen to a Pulp album, but this entire album lacks imagination and is derivative as hell. I'm honored that he loves America so much, but hearing someone who does not have a great singing voice try to pretend to be a great crooner from the past just makes me want to go listen to the original great crooners of the past instead. This doesn't merit all time status and inclusion on a list like this. Anyone who is not British is not going to waste a space on this list with this when they can just pick one of the classics that Richard Hawlely is borrowing all of his ideas from. To be fair 2005 was a pretty thin year for music, but it is clear to me that this album occupies a spot that belongs to Imogen Heap's SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, Goldfrapp's SUPERNATURE, or Gorillaz's DEMON DAYS.

Struggling to understand why this was considered a good album. The album isn’t better than any of its predecessors from the 50s or 60s.

It turns out getting the guitarist from Pulp to make a heartfelt tribute to the early days of rock and doo-wop sounds almost exactly like The Magnetic Fields by and for straight people, and it’s exactly as cursed and baffling of a prospect as it sounds. One star.

Sleepy. Not really for me.

Boring, flat.

I'm currently four songs in and I'm ridiculously bored. I've heard no change in just over ten minutes. It's very slow, very monotonous, and very boring. Seven tracks done now. There seems to be a slight country vibe on this one. Still bored though. I want this to be over. If I don't finish this review, send for help. Track ten now and the first half is a capella. I fear I might not make it to the end. Last track and I've made it. I feel relief that it's over. In all seriousness, a few tracks did stand out. 'The Ocean' had a nice orchestral sound and built itself up nicely before fading out. 'Tonight' was actually quite a beautiful track and Hawley's voice fits this one the best. 'Last Orders' the closing track is an ambient, atmospheric tune with a lovely piano. This is a bit of a snoozefest. It's not bad and it doesn't hurt my ears, but it's definitely boring. Three tracks out of eleven isn't good enough. I'd describe it as "forgettably pleasant'.

Fuck off. I was listening to this and the whole time, I couldn't believe it wasn't over already. It was the longest 45 minutes of my life, it just kept going. I kept waiting for a fast paced song to crop up to liven the mood and it never arrived. Waters of my Time was fucking dreadful and reminded me of Beautiful Tonight by Eric Clapton; a song I also hate. It's so boring. It's too croony. I hate his voice, it's way too dated for my liking. I will never listen to this again. I was so tempted to stop this half way through, I hated it that much. I liked the last song but only because he didn't sing over it. Never again.

Didn't have any expectations going into this one. Didn't read the wiki article either. Plain pipe rack / bog standard crooner album. Frank Sinatra, but milder. Its fine, it's just fine. Not something I love, nor something I'd follow up on. But no issue with it. My biggest disappointment? The Ocean and Born Under a Bad Sign weren't fun covers, just Hawley songs that had the same title as other songs that I'd be more interested in hearing covers of. Sigh, I guess it's just another week of mostly weird albums to suffer through.

Maybe I'm just not feeling this today, but I hated this. It's just a version of things that have been done better 100s of times before. It sounds like some average talent musician in a coffee shop or winery. It commits the worst sin in the arts... it's boring. This is the first record I've gotten where I have no clue why I would need to hear this before I die.

Ok, is dit uit 2005? Ik snap wel dat ik dit niet ken, want het is een gedateerde crooner uit vervlogen tijden. Een soort imitatie van de broer van de tante van Jan de Bakker en die zijn zus die om de hoek woont, die Frank Sinatra, Elvis en Roy Orbison probeert na te doen. Terwijl deze gast gewoon uit Sheffield komt, klinkt het eerder alsof hij uit Volendam komt en Engels probeert te zingen. Er zit ook overdreven veel galm in, echt typisch die gast die net zijn versterker uit de kofferbak heeft gehaald en dan 3 uur gaat lopen soundchecken. Wat is dit ongelooflijk saai. Een absolute aanfluiting.

I couldn't finish it. I was surprised this was recorded in 2005 and the singer isn't much older than me. Sounds like something my mother-in-law would enjoy.

Woof. Maybe if I were in a better mood, or if this was dated 50 years earlier, I'd give it a 2 and say it's simply not my jam. I started skipping on track 2, listened to a few seconds of each, found them to all basically sound the same, and got the fuck out. No thanks. I'm sure this works for some people, but it ain't me.

Oh my God this is one of the most fucking boring albums I have ever listened to. I listened to this while quite hungover so as soon as I pressed play on the first song I thought "perfect, exactly what I need right now". But little did I know that's all this album would be, all the way through. There are plenty of amazing chill albums to listen to while hungover, but what they all have in common is that while still remaining super calm, they keep the music interesting. This album fails so hard at remaining interesting that it's almost funny. Normally, albums that are boring but inoffensive would receive a 2/5, but this album stretches the meaning of the word "boring" to realms I thought were never possible. And for that it gets a 1/5 from me.

A primitive, underwhelming effort (or absence thereof), that's as rife with cliches, as it is with it's lack of ambition. This album sounds more like a phoned in contractual obligation to a record label than an output of creative expression. F

I was optimistic when I saw that Richard Hawley is the guitarist for Pulp, who I like. So, I was expecting a more interesting, upbeat album but this one just really fell flat for me. Not many standouts at all but not offensively bad either, just king of boring to me. Curious to know why the creators of this list felt that this belonged on here, considering I feel like this album is pretty derivative and there are plenty of albums that do this similar type of music better or before this album. Standout Tracks: I Sleep Alone

This album is fantastic.... at putting me to sleep.

Sometimes it sounds like classic country, sometimes like mood music for a romantic comedy. At no time does it sound interesting to me.

Not a at all for me... actually might be my least favorite kind of music after country. It's chill but not my kind of chill.

Not really into this genre of music
