Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Relentlessly tedious. One song peaked my interest as it sounded a bit like Scott Walker.. but most of it was so boring
This did very little for me. I'm tempted to give it one star but the execution is competent.
"Coles Corner," released in 2005, is often celebrated as one of Richard Hawley's best works. However, upon listening to it with a critical ear, I notice some flaws that left me with a negative impression. Firstly, the production of the album, although well-crafted, sounds excessively polished, which dilutes the authenticity and rawness that many expect from folk and rock music. This overly refined approach makes the songs feel more like replicas than genuine expressions of emotion. Instead of capturing the essence of life and human experiences, the production leaves a sense of superficiality. Moreover, the album's sound, while pleasant, becomes monotonous over the course of the tracks. The repetition of certain arrangements and the lack of variety in instrumentation make me lose interest before the album concludes. But I managed to finish listening to the album, hoping that there would be some moment that would break the cycle of dated arrangements and offer something interesting, rather than just a empty and boring melodies. I was completely mistaken. Interestingly, even for an album released in 2005, it already feels dated from that time, just imagine how it sounds now. It seems like a combination of folk styles that were popular 30 to 40 years ago. Another point to consider is the lyrics of the songs. While Hawley undeniably has a knack for storytelling, some of his lyrics come across as clichéd and predictable. Instead of surprising or provoking thought, they often fall into common themes like love and loss without bringing new perspectives or depth. In conclusion, although "Coles Corner" has its admirers and is considered a landmark in Richard Hawley's career, its excessive production, monotonous sound, and clichéd lyrics make me feel that the album does not deliver the emotional depth it promises. For those seeking a more authentic and impactful musical experience, "Coles Corner" may leave something to be desired.
Sounded like a British mix of Frank Sinatra crooning and 50s country/americana/rock. I'd probably rather listen to this than the Frank Sinatra that made it into this list, but not much else I can say about it.
Look, I hate to be the guy that constantly wants this list to live up to its name, but c'mon... No offense to this guy because it's not bad, but I didn't need to hear this. It's not for me and I don't understand why it was picked.
So is this a Christmas album?
POV : You're heading back to the cheap motel after a couple of drinks you couldn't afford. You're thinking about the revolver in the glove compartment and how you almost ended it two days ago. All of a sudden, a weird looking clown walks up the road. No chance to hit the brakes, you ram him over. A man and a woman, well dressed, knocks on your window. As you roll it down, they start singing a tune you know you've heard before, but you can't quite put your finger on it. Oh no! You're in a Lynch movie!
It was a hard one to go through
I'll have to try this again sometime. I was really not in the mood for this kind of music when I heard it. For now, 2
Mellow and boring. 2/5
meh
Really generic
Not my vibe. Just ok
Boring
Elvis on Zoloft.
I have already forgotten about this
Nothing here that struck me as list worthy. He's not bad but it's just not special or great and there's so many albums and artists left off the list for something like this.
Weird
It’s a shame; I like Richard Hawley a lot - he was great supporting Pulp in Sheffield, but this album is just a bit too low and slow for me. The crooning works for a while but does begin to drag a little about halfway through. Lyricism is good. A little bit of an air of club singer about it.
Gentle album that does well at a certain, coffee shop / lounge ambiance. I Sleep Alone was a highlight for me but it’s not overly for me. 5/10
I had high hopes for this album, but it really ended up being a one-trick pony. No variation on his delivery or instrumentals for 46 mins was a pretty grating experience. 2.4/5 -> 2/5
I was confused about what genre this album is. And I think Richard was too. In general I don't believe it is in some way special. I'd rather listen to many other albums (by different artists) that are not on this list.
To me, this is an example of music that is phenomenally well made and well produced, but the end product doesn't quite add up to the sum of its parts. Some really beautiful instrumentation, yet the songs themselves feel a little boring and uninspired. A 5 from a production standpoint, but overall misses the mark for me.
This is what a coma sounds like.
too pop to get three stars
sleepy ahh
Decent album, solid songs. The Ocean stuck out to me but nothing else, really. Not bad but probably wouldn't revisit anytime soon.
Coles Corner is one of those albums that just kinda exists. The music sounds okay, the vocals work with the songs well enough, and the lyrics are there but this album simply plays it far too safe. All the songs (except for the last one) use pretty much the same formula of acoustic guitar, sad melancholy lyrics, with maybe some background ambiance here and there. That's kinda it for this album, it never tries anything interesting or all that different, it just follows an overly safe and bland formula all the way throughout. It is definitely something when i like the ambient song of an album the most simply because it sounds the most different. This album is just there. Best Song: Last Orders Worst Song: Darlin' Wait For Me (Side note: The worst song here is kinda just interchangeable since all these songs sound virtually identical)
A hit in the UK! Mid Americana in the US.
Two almost listenable songs, extremely dull
Coles Corner by Richard Hawley is a melancholic album that offers a soothing soundscape but lacks the emotional depth and energy to truly captivate listeners. While the lo-fi aesthetic and distinctive vocals may appeal to some, the songs feel repetitive and ultimately fail to deliver anything truly engaging. It's a shame, as Hawley's talent for creating atmospheric music is undeniable. If you're seeking a soundtrack to your insomnia, this album might be just what you need. However, if you're looking for something more stimulating, you might want to look elsewhere.
2.5 Too normal to be a top 1001 album.
Chill album but didn't really leave an impression. Was it nice? Sure. Will I listen to it again? Probably not. Maybe when I'm more in the mood this will stand out more. Strong 2.
Didn’t seem remarkable to me.
I think he's an amazing person, and he was in Pulp. I should be there for it. But this revivalist rock and roll is largely very boring.
This was entirely uninteresting
I'm torn about this. The opening arrangement is really beautiful, the singing isn't too shabby, the ocean is a wonderful song. But all the rest is just so.... Ughhhhh! Not going to play this again so 2/5
Album was really slow and I found it kind of boring. Never really caught my attention. 2/5 Won’t listen again
Rating: 2.4
Definition of OK. At Swim Two Birds / Montgolfier Brothers do this same thing with way more Chutzpah
brotha eughhhh
Even though this is an album with original songs, it still sounds like a long album of covers. There is no personality here.
I feel like I've heard the name before, and sounds like they were part of a bigger band at some point but that doesn't seem to be the case. Listening to this album it seems like he was born in the wrong era. That is sometimes a good thing but overall it felt dated rather than timeless. There were quite a few tracks I liked and was one of the rare albums with a skip just because it was a bit boring. Kind of a vanilla album for me Favorite track "The Ocean" 2/5
Everything about this record is just fine. Nothing is great. The songs are just fine, the instrumentation is just fine, his voice is, well he ain't no Frank Sinatra, but it's fine. I wonder how this ended up on the list. It was neither groundbreaking nor the start of a new revival. It's just fine. Favorite song: Tonight.
Music that your great grandparents will like
This didn't really do anything for me. It feels like it should have been recorded in the 70s, not the 00s. I also got big "I love to go to the local karaoke and queue 6 Elvis songs back-to-back" vibes from it
beautiful orchestration on the first track , But the rest of the album doesn’t interest me at all .
A few standouts but a few too many snoozes.
It's not bad but not what I'd listen to normally
Ikke just essentielt..
Not my thing
Everything about this is nice, but not something I can get into
My initial listen didn't impress me much.
2.5
This album is so unremarkable that I still can't tell you what the words are even though I read the lyrics.
Favorite Track: Darlin' Wait for Me This album had an abundance of slower songs. Two songs I particularly enjoyed were "Darlin' Wait for Me" & "Born Under a Bad Sign". I rate this album 2.7/5.0. I enjoyed this album for what it was, but I would not go out of my way to relisten to it.
A little bleak and dreary, didn't do much for me.
It's okay, but I don't know why it's on the list. Nothing to write home about.
Totally fine but didn't really do anything for me. I liked "I Sleep Alone" so I'll bump it up to 2.5 stars
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
This is a weird sound to come out of 2005. Not awful but not exciting either. A real bore.
I never got the need to hit the skip button or anything like that. But it's not good, it's strange to come from the time period it did, and I'll never listen to it again. Good voice, I guess?
it's nice but boy is it boring
..(.
Es ist nicht schlecht. Irgendwie anachronistisch. Vor allem aber langweilig…
The first half of the album is definitely better than the second half, but yet again, i dont know why this album is on this list. Its not great. its not bad either... its mainly just boring and bland...
Not my favorite.
Gorgeous album cover! It’s evocative of a warm-ish September night in the city. Summer is ending, fall chilliness is not quite yet nipping at our heels, but we know we need to make the most of a glorious night like this. Because there won’t be many more like it for a while. See the show, grab a beer, walk around after, get a hot dog, have deep talks outside the bar, share a first sweet kiss or have horny public make out before you race to catch the latest train possible home… oh what a night! The music however, does not meet the completely unreasonable expectations I’ve had set in my mind based on this album artwork alone. It tries, but I think I put too much pressure on it.
Just meh, feels like it belongs in another decade. Just not that impressed.
Too sad
Love Pulp. Did not care for this.
There are several albums in this list that get praise for how sad and melancholy they are but to me that seems kind of pathetic. Sometimes it’s done right and is good but an album like this just comes off as whiny and shallow. There’s nothing too redeeming on this album and it doesn’t need to be revisited. 4.6/10
Like, for real? Why is this album on this list? The music on this album made in 2005 is extremely reminiscent of the “old people” lounge music that would be sung by Steve Lawrence on variety shows in the 1970s. I’m not going to give it a 1, because it is atmospheric. I can easily imagine a 60 year old guy whose wife left him, sitting in a bar drowning his sorrows to this music. It just seems strange to find something so derivative on this list. I will now be upset if Barry Manilow isn’t included at some point. At least he was more original than this.
Not my type of music. He's a crooner. Slow, orchestral.
He's from Sheffield and has worked with Jarvis Cocker and the Arctic Monkeys, and I can hear how he inspired some of their more boring stuff. I kinda get the feeling he's going for of being lonely in a dark town in the norf but it's still not my cup of tea.
Really odd, it sounded like 1960 but it was 2010 or something? But yeah, it was okay but decidedly meh. Sorry!
dosadno
This crooner of an album would be a great one to sort of take a nap to on a rainy day. Peaceful and generally harmonious. Some of the lyrics are a little odd!
We already have a Johnny Cash and he did it better.
Ok
ok in parts, too much crooning
The definition of meh. Like, it's fine - could see it playing in a coffee shop & failing to offend anybody. But it's utterly unmemorable - a Frank Sinatra / Elvis/ shades of Leonard Cohen amalgam that doesn't do anything significant on its own.
The first part of this album vaguely reminded me of the more recent Arctic Monkeys albums and if this had been sung by the distinct vocals of Alex Turner, I would be all over it. Alas it was not. Coles Corner brought you back to the vintage-'40s pop, jazz, and even some blues, which felt authentic, just not what I'm into. Best: Hotel Room Worst: Who's Going to Shoe Your Pretty Feet 2.5 Stars
1.6 not great but didn't completely hate it
I don’t know about this one, I couldn’t get into it. Whether I wasn’t in the right mood or what but this was a bit too slow for my taste and kind of dull to be honest.
This is controversial for me, 'cause i like that it doesn't sound like the classic 2000's and that it sound more like the 60's, but at the same time it gets me bored that it's basically all the same thing over again and that it's soo calmed gets me a little bit bored and sleepy to be honesta, i would give it 1 star, but i'm giving it 2 for the thing i said first that it doesn't sound like the classic 2000's
Meh
This was playing when I learned that Usher will perform the halftime show for the Superbowl on Feb. 11th. YEAH! I wanna hear Usher! Is Usher on this cursed list? *UPDATE* None of Usher's albums are on the list, but U2 make it to the list 4 times! GAH, subjective euro-centric (specifically British) refuse. Richard Hawley, you do you. I was too distracted to listen closely.
Feels like trying to hark to country crooner hybrid but hasn't got enough oomph. All a little bit vanilla, although can't dispute that the background music is quite nice. Just overall quite a boring record. 1.5/5
Would like to give 2.5 but will give 2. I don't have nearly enough sorrow in my heart to find this enjoyable.
I liked one song
Not for me.
Not sure I'm really feeling this modern take on Sinatra/showtunes. The instrumentation was great and had some cool ideas going on, but mostly I found myself wishing I was listening to The Growlers instead. Not enough tempo variation and upbeat oomph to keep this thing going for me, even though there were some moments of beauty here and there.
Several of the songs had Johnny Cash vibes. Born Under A Bad Sign and I Sleep Alone were not bad
I can only describe this as slow and melancholy. I guess it isn't terrible, but I don't like it very much Feeling a strong 2 on this one
Wholly unnecessary album
I want to rate this higher. I didn't dislike it, it shines in a couple spots. But it can't escape sounding like the solo effort of a guy who does his best work collaborating with other artists (which it is)
I was just kind of bored the whole time. He sounded fine, just it was not my type of music. It really dragged.
1) I think I wasn't depressed enough to listen to this today 2) It's very interesting (negative/derogatory) to me that this album from 2005 is on this list when its praise seems to be for being a bluesy, countryish, retro sounding record because so far (admittedly only 31 albums in) I would think a blues or country album from the 60s would be better featured
First song made me want to go lay in the snow and be sad I feel like this would be the perfect album to play as background music to a Christmas dinner party. It sounds fine it’s just not super interesting. I skipped the second half of the ocean, because the first half was so frustrating and looking at the lyrics the second half was not better
Nice, but pretty dull towards the end
Sorry, but I just don't get it.
Having read previous reviews, I was hoping that we'd get past the oppressively vanilla, blue-eyed soul vibe... but it never went away. It just got more and more bland and boring. Overblown production, underwhelming performances, and bland songwriting. There's just... nothing of value on display. I fail to see the point of having it here other than to pad the already significant number of British blue-eyed soul albums on the list.
not for me
A bit dreary.
Meni vähä ohi, jotai kolmosta ja kakkosta
Really not my thing
Essential Tracks: Cole’s Corner (Playlist) Just Like the Rain
doesn't even have his big hit on.
Very nice, chill background music.
I typically like this kind of music but I just can’t stand the dude’s voice. Too much of a crooner.
Album started pretty decent! I was a little excited for this album and artist I had never heard of. Then I was transported into a time warp where my concept of minutes and seconds was skewed, and I felt dizzy. Just time slowing down every so slightly with every passing second — or was it a minute? I’m not sure. I’m along for the ride. I don’t fight it. Grooving alone I find myself wondering how long the first song is… kinda feels like 46 minutes and 17 seconds. Before I know it, I hear the opening of the album again. A reprise? Nay. The album had repeated, and I realized the songs were entirely indistinguishable from one another, and time had traveled as normal. Much to my dismay since I was at work, and the previous five hour long journey I thought I had taken only took… 46 minutes and 17 seconds. 2/5 because the beginning is a bit of a bop.
The only track of Richard Hawley I ever liked was Tonight The Streets Are Ours, but it's not on this album. I found this album to be disappointing, had the promise of easy listening... only to border very noticeably toward country (dangerous territory)
Boring.
Sounds older than it is. I was not convinced when the first track began, and it never really hooked me. I do like some slower, softer albums, but this just isn't for me. 2.5/5
If I was in the mood for this type of music, and I frequently am, why would I not just play Johnny Cash? Could have been so much more but missed and became nothing special.
Beautiful. Heartfelt. I’m probably not going to remember much about it.
After a run of albums that are arguably must listen, even if I didn’t like all of them, we get this trendoid crap. Released in 2005. Won awards. Completely forgotten by 2006. I’m sure there’s a coterie of people holding onto this as they try and hold on to their thinning hair, trying to live in a place where it’s always 2005 and wondering why it doesn’t have the resonance of 1968 or 1992. Not as bad as I’m making it out. But nowhere near ‘must-listen’.
Sounds like an impression of Seth MacFarlane's impression of Frank Sinatra. Like something they'd play in Family Guy for a single gag. People who listen to this in their free time are scarier to me than people who listen to harsh noise wall. Too many words. Here's my reaction summed up in three emojis: 😴😴😴
This is somebody's jam, but not mine. Bit of a snoozefest
Decent enough
The bits I skimmed through sounded flawless. I just don't find it very interesting.
Val Doonican was far too much of a feature of TV growing up for me to have any positive feelings about this type of music I'm afraid. There were, maybe, two slightly brighter moments and I think that just about - and it is just about - saves it from my first 1 star. If I hadn't given that My Bloody Valentine record 2 stars then this might have fallen - as it is it joins it as the worst thing I've listened to on this list I'm afraid. It's probably genius, but I quite actively dislike it.
This wasn't terrible, but largely forgettable.
I enjoy this style of music and there was nothing technically bad about the album but I didn’t connect with his voice and so my rating reflects my indifference.
okay, need to listen again, didn’t feel it much
I hit play on Spotify but then I had to leave and I didn't come back until the recommendations were playing. Based on the recommendations I knew I wasn't going to like this. Just pretty boring overall. Maybe if it came out 70 years ago I'd feel differently. 2.5 stars
Pretty boring chamber pop. There's a LOT of stuff in the genre I prefer to this.
He has a very nice sort of jazzy voice but the music it is over is much less interesting than most jazz. This album did not really suit my tastes, I found it overlong, slow, and low key.
It was ok
Nice…inoffensive…boring. Pick this to spice up a hotel lobby over the normal muzak. Or maybe tot fall asleep.
Boring
I have to really hate an album before I give it one star, and I didn't actually hate it , just found it totally bland and uninspiring. There must be reasons why someone would make such an album, and why so many people seem to like it or equally that somebody thought about including it in a list of top albums. I just cant understand them. 1.5/5 at best
Very standard. Very middle of the road. Can see the Alex Turner influence. Some melodic soulful tunes though. Sot Coles Corner The Ocean Born under a bad sign 2.5/5
Sad boi
Started off well enough but goes on far longer than it needed to.
kind of meh.
Very swooney and crooney, the orchestra sounds were nice 2/5
Decent
I was previously unfamiliar with Hawley. It's a certain kind of mood for a certain kind of day. A certain kind of person would really get into it. I liked the progressions, but it all felt like shadow puppetry.
Too slow
Okay, but a bit generic and boring.
I didn't particularly like it, slow crooner, touching on twangy country. Nothing really memorable.
Super quick listen and forgettable
Fine. The soft, poetic singer-songwriter genre is really hit or miss for me, and this was a bit of a miss.
Meh. Leonard Cohen without the Leonard Cohen.
Kind of a big nothing
It's very tasteful, he sings well, and it won't offend anyone, but my word, it's boring and uneventful. Bafflingly, I actually bought this at the time. I Sleep Alone caught my ear, probably because it picks up the pace a bit, and has some more interesting guitar tones.
I went to Sheffield once. It rained the whole weekend and our mini-cab driver was involved in a rather unsavory incident with a traffic warden. In this context, Richard Hawley's music is joyous and exotic. Thankfully however, I'm not writing this review from Sheffield.
Music put me to sleep and I’m not trying to sleep
Liked the last song but thats about it
Loved the Longpigs the Sun is Often Out back in the 90s, this is very not that. Had this recommended a year or so ago from someone who seemed to love everything and anything that came out of Sheffield. Anyway. This is a nice, huggly sound. Kind of sounds like fellow Yorkshireman Chris Rea except good. But will I think to listen to it more than the two times I now have? Questionable. The archetypal 3/5 for me, nothing stands out, nothing to dislike. Actually a few tracks in, I realised the problem. It's really nice and cosy for a track or two. After that though, I'm bored rigid. This is on the list when something else more interesting isn't. 2/5
I don't like crooners. It's not that I don't like modern music that sounds like old music. I really dig lots of bands that do new tunes that sound like music from my parents and grandparents generation. But there's something about crooners that turns me off -- even if they sound a little bit like Mark Lanegan. Hotel Room stands out a decent track. Born Under a Bad Sign is a sweet tune reminiscent of Petula Clark swinging 60s pop.
Overall not great to ok. Hotel Room was the stand out for me.
It wasn't horrible, but questioning why this one was on the list. I could see my mom enjoying it though no cap. Mother's vacuuming music genre.
Kind of a dud for me. I probably would have been into it in 2008
Its so, so. Quite calm.
Old school slow music
boring
I bought this when it came out on a wave of critical acclaim but don’t listen to it often these days. It’s a really well polished take on a romantic crooners collection, but with hindsight I’m not sure exactly why he did so - it’s well sung and arranged, but ultimately feels like very high end karaoke.
The fact is Richard Hawley is not Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett or Bobby Darin or Tom Jones or Johnny Cash. If you sound just vaguely like the greats but are not one of them, you'll be judged harshly. This album sounds like cover songs and not interesting ones either.
Too retro for me. It plodded along nicely, but nothing to make me return.
While this old style country jazz period piece of an album may suit romantic entertainment by the fireside on a cold winter night, I found its initial charm fading away rather quickly. Half way through, I was rather bored.
Well I’ve herd his guitar in the longpigs and he’s good… The album opens with the title track a pleasant stroll compared to what I’ve heard of his work before. He’s got an amazing gentle ( Christmas singer sounding) voice which works for the music being done. Just like rain takes a folkier tone compared to the last one still quite well produced big band yet solo singer stuff, good. Hotel room is a lovely sounding song great but not my type of music to be honest. Next is Darlin’ wait for me another song of similar opinion it’s slightly worse just being slow without much substance for me. The ocean is cool again this dull feeling but this is just more epic and mysterious great stuff. Born under a bad sign has this slight bit pf acoustic guitar shuffling that really glues the song together, all in all it’s still the same big band lovey-dovey sounding stuff but not a bad implementation of it. Then is the folky track, I sleep alone it’s a good left turn that shows knowledge of good sequencing not my favourite not my least. Tonight is a gloomy acoustic song it’s good but like none of this album hits in the greatest way. The album goes folkier again with one of the best songs on the album ( wading through) the waters of my time it’s just relaxing well written and memorable something you want from any solo artist. The album’s penultimate track whose going to shoe your pretty feet lacks quite a bit in instrumentation just a poem with a more echoey version of Hawley’s usual vocals. It goes will with the piano based closer last orders a cold and gloomy track but it’s still one of the best songs somehow and it’s instrumental. I am gutted with this album to be honest I thought the guitarist in a rather underrated band whose best aspect was their guitars would make quite a fun album not one that’s all maturity and nothing else.
I mean, whatever. I feel like this album would be playing at an outdoor skating rink in NYC. It’s got an atmosphere and that’s about all it’s got for me.
The album was interesting as several of the songs had a retro feel to it. By retro feel, I mean it sounded like the song was from the '50s. Other songs had a country feel to it so I did not care for that. It wasn't a bad album and probably a little better than a 2 but I will round down.
Asked someone to guess when this album was released “1984. No, 1974. I really think it is 1950’s but I feel like it’s a trick question and the background guitar doesn’t sound like the 50’s”. 2005. Tried to understand why such an anachronistic album was including. Did not find the answer.
I enjoyed a few songs, but a lot of songs I didn't care for, especially the "shoe" song. Sounds like a knockoff of classy 50s/60s music with an old timey country touch at times. He doesn't have as remarkable of a voice as the great crooners he's LARPing as. Maybe I'm too harsh. I can see why others could like it. Favorite song was Born Under a Bad Sign. Last track was very pleasant too
Ok album, didn’t really like the singing
i thought the music was really interesting but man his voice… it just was not helping in any way…
I can absolutely appreciate the gentle melodies and craft involved - full stop. Even the singing is likely objectively nice. It's just that this crooning style doesn't resonate with me on a gut level at all, and especially on the more country-oriented songs. I feel a little bad giving this a 2; it's entirely a personal-preference thing; this could be someone's favourite album and I'd kind of get it but the generally laconic overall feel isn't hitting me. 5/10 2 stars
Day 12: Wasn't awful. I could see myself giving it a better rating if I listened to it in a different mood or time of day. I did enjoy most of the songs but felt that a lot of them fell into the background and didn't really interest me. Favourite Song: The Ocean
Nice music. Not at all what I was expecting. 2.5/5
Not my lane, I'm sure it's OK for people who like a crooner, but simply too schmaltzy
Irgendwie unbeeindruckend.
Not my style of music.
Tja
Niet vervelend, ook niet heel leuk; liftmuziek!
Veel te glad
Total snooze fest. 4/10
It's just kinda Burt Bacharach-y schmaltz.
This is a pleasant enough album but it doesn't linger with me. Perhaps I need to be more attuned to the Americana sound by way of Sheffield to fully appreciate it.
trash tier sounds like elevator music, got a bit better towards the second half kinda proto-orville peck but trashier
This is a hard one to pin down but, ultimately, I don't particularly like it. It's like he's trying to be Roy Orbison and that, to me, isn't a winning move.
Old-timey music in the modern age. Fine.
Beetje melige muziek, sprak me weinig aan
A little twangy
Sounds like a smooth soundtrack to a straight to TV Christmas movie. Well produced but not for me.
I found the album a bit boring. No songs really stood out from the others.
This sounds like my grandparents music, sad guy on a piano singing about love and loss. Very slow, voice is ok but doesn't really stand out in any way. The opening song definitely sets a really unexciting tone, some of the later songs pick up a bit but they go from like a 1 to a 3 out of 10 max. Everything about it just seems like a very generic version of what's happened long ago. Like an AI was tasked with generating an album after listening to Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and any other 50s guy that just sings slowly. This is what that AI spat out.
Added!
2/5 sadly nope.
Wow, mys!
I GET IT!!!! YOU LIVE IN THE CITY IN AMERICAAAAA
Not bad as far as crooners go. Nothing I would crave for but my wife would enjoy 2.5 🌟
Good qualitu music, but boring. Very boring.
meh
That’s a no from me dawg
Smooth jazzy, good background music. Not great though. Vocals wanna be Sinatra but no.
I just didn’t get it.
I figured there might be a crooner album somewhere on this list, but I was not expecting it to be from 2005. He's got a nice voice, but it's not really my type of thing.
Not my bag but done well
Twee and horrible.
Nothing special, soft vocal jazz type thing.
I really like Richard Hawley. Particularly Longpigs era. But this is straight up crooning.
no, no me gustó
Lounge music. easy listening, but didn't get me excited.
A little too christmasy there for a bit.
Fine. 5/10
If I could cherry pick a few songs the score might double
Very middle of the road for me... I like the style okay, but it wasn't very distinct. Fell into the background for me. Good music to nap to.
he's no Frankie
No.
A bit Johnny Cash but not as good
A really weird album. Like something from the 70s, except from the 90s.
Not my thing.
@@. Real old-timey and a bit boring voice.
Not my style. Got a John Denver / Johnny Cash vibe... but more...Vegas.
2.5
It was fine.
not that bad but not so much my style
Did not like this
not for me.
Soi ihan kivasti taustalla, hajuton ja mauton
annoying crooner, i'm not going to finish this but i did like the title song
Feels like an album out of time, very 50s/60s pop rock/lounge sound, competent but not something I really enjoyed
I hate this nostalgic cosplay crap.
It was awful. Sounds like Vegas Lounge music. Not worth a listen.
Not for me. 1/5
Boring with a capital B. I cannot imagine a situation where any of these songs would be played. Maybe a funeral parlor? It even seems a little too boring for that.
super lame
I certainly don't need 50's style music in my catalogue. 1 star or F.
I bought this for a punt years ago and I played it once. Now I've played it again I can see why I only played it the once. Its a bit dreary, no stand out tracks, just bland from start to finish.
this is just really depressing and not in the good way
Not for me
Mind numbingly boring and derivative.
What are we doing here? I mean, sure, this guy pumped out a consistent decades worth of crap rock, but none of it, including this, offers anything worth while
Why is this on this list. Can't imagine any historical significance. Wanted to not finish it.
Utter garbage. Modern crooning at its worst. Tried to find something redeeming and just couldn’t
Lounge music.
inessential, spineless
Um, curious…why is this on the list? I did not like this at all.
album #22 this isn't a bad album but i fail to understand why it's on this list. it's dull as dishwater and isn't influential/impactful. i have a feeling it's just because it won a mercury prize. it was hard for me to actually get through the whole thing because i just wasn't interested. every song sounded the same, barring the ocean. i'm giving it a 1 because halfway through i kept checking whether it was the last song so i could end the album lol. ꩜ favourite track(s): the ocean ꩜ least favourite track(s): born under a bad sign ꩜ album rating: ★☆☆☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,067 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 10 ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 3 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 19
I kind of had to waffle and figure out how mad I am at this. I do think this is being earnest, and I don't have anything against Richard Hawley, but "Sinatra impression over boilerplate easy listening revival" is kind of a recipe for music that I just fucking hate. And I would like to say that I *do* like Sinatra himself. But when a modern artist tries to do the same thing, it just sits wrong with me. I also think that the songs here have too little movement to be interesting, and too little innovation to be groundbreaking. I also can't really connect with any of these songs emotionally, at least to an extent that would help me get into this thing. I really can't see who this is for aside from people who listen *exclusively* to easy listening and countrypolitan. The Ocean is probably the best here, even though it ends up a little melodramatic. And I think I Sleep Alone and Tonight are also alright, but they are still kind of a slog. But everything else just has me watching the clock as it melts into an unspecific puddle of easy listening goop. I feel a little bad, because I do think Hawley is doing what he likes, but I just dont enjoy spending time listening to this.
Hard pass.
Nope..not for me
Bored, bored, bored.
Boooooooringggg
Not for me…
Awful
Previously unknown. Kinda boring.
Torture
It's the 21st Century version of Frank Sinatra, except it's even more boring. God help me. Favorite Track: "New Orders".
This music isn’t bad, it’s just unremarkable and generic. Americana, I think it’s called. If someone told me this was an AI generated album I would be in no position to disagree.
I can't imagine ever being in the mood for this album
Coles Corner The Ocean
Vintage vibes, strings interesantes. Medio folk. kinda boring... muy monotono Likes: I sleep alone
couldn’t get through it
UNBELIEVABLY boring !!!!
My god this is dull.
Boring
I'm sure he is talented but I just found it a boring listen. I sometimes liked his guitar work. His voice is soft and low but stylistically there was nothing engaging in his singing. Some of the lyrics were well turned phrases but overall just too sleepy for me.
Not worth my time
Um álbum de um filme inglês broxante.
Put it on while doing some house cleaning. It was okay for that. Mostly it reminds me why I don't smoke dope and sit around in my underwear giggling at nothing for hours on end. Bailed on it way before the halfway point. This ain't my cup of tea.
Einige schöne, ruhige Songs. Aber warum nur klingt alles gleich? Je länger, desto langweiliger!
Unedited Notes: I made it through FIVE whole tracks of this album before I turned it off. Do I win a prize? I don't think that they even play this kind of music in nursing homes anymore. A Michael Bublé album would be far more hip and relevant to popular culture than this. This album makes The Carpenters sound like Atari Teenage Riot.
this might be the most boring album i’ve had so far, so dated and does not stand the test of time ZERO STARS
Oh my god this is boring. It’s annoying because there are bright spots on this album that show that the music doesn’t have to be this bad. Unfortunately, the lows are VERY low. It seems that Richard Hawley just chose to make this sappy garbage.
Got bored
too slow to my liking
This is not it.
1 star, inoffensive background music
The UK 🇬🇧 centric nature of this list rears its ugly head once again with a vanity project from a side musician in Pulp, a band who is inexplicably acclaimed. I played this for several people who agreed that it is NOT in fact on par with someone like Chris Isaak, and is a lame derivative of the source material (Roy Orbison and Elvis were sacreligiously mentioned). Once again: style before substance. The consensus was ”this sucks,” and I’m glad my squad backed me up on that opinion.
Det er langsomt og kedeligt skrald. Burde ikke være på listen.
I've never heard of this chap so this would obviously be new to me. Let's GO! Hmm, is he a modern Frank Sinatra-type? A modern crooner? Track 1 suggests yes. Interesting. Track 2 picks up the pace a bit. Pretty guitar on this one. Track 3 is what they would call "romantic pop" I guess. Heartfelt to be sure. Track 4 manages to slow things down a bit. If he were American I imagine he would have leaned into that old country and western scene. Track 5 is another slow jam. His voice has dropped a register. I think I prefer his regular register. Track 6 made me wish I was listening to Albert King. Sigh Track 7 is a tad jauntier. Lots of emotion in these songs. Track 8 slows it right down. Too much of the same from this fella. Track 9 IS a straight up country song. I guess more of an Irish-type folk song but I like this one more than most so far from the album. Track 10 slows things way back down. Not my style at all. Track 11 is an atmospheric end to the album. Pretty. Overall this did not vibe with me. I'm sure its good in certain circles but I will not be listening to it again. 1/5
It is better than forcing myself to listen to a Pulp album, but this entire album lacks imagination and is derivative as hell. I'm honored that he loves America so much, but hearing someone who does not have a great singing voice try to pretend to be a great crooner from the past just makes me want to go listen to the original great crooners of the past instead. This doesn't merit all time status and inclusion on a list like this. Anyone who is not British is not going to waste a space on this list with this when they can just pick one of the classics that Richard Hawlely is borrowing all of his ideas from. To be fair 2005 was a pretty thin year for music, but it is clear to me that this album occupies a spot that belongs to Imogen Heap's SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, Goldfrapp's SUPERNATURE, or Gorillaz's DEMON DAYS.
what were they putting in the water in the 2000s that made all these dudes want to produce the most corny, lame and unimaginative music possible? music to watch paint dry to
Boring and depressing
What even is this? At least Napalm Death, Lightning Bolt, and Slipknot had the decency to be directly offensive. This one tries to slow kill you with silky boredom.
Really? For this coming out so recently, what makes this so special to be on the list? It’s boring, and outdated.
pfffft!!
not my thing.
Struggling to understand why this was considered a good album. The album isn’t better than any of its predecessors from the 50s or 60s.
It turns out getting the guitarist from Pulp to make a heartfelt tribute to the early days of rock and doo-wop sounds almost exactly like The Magnetic Fields by and for straight people, and it’s exactly as cursed and baffling of a prospect as it sounds. One star.
👎🏻
Sleepy. Not really for me.
