Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Meh
Labels fought over these guys? Seriously? Wow, I guess the suits and the musicians were all into Heroin back in the hippie movement in Frisco
Sounds right on par for 1967, probably couldn't recognize it if I heard it.
Ei jätä oikein muistijälkiä. Kivasti vähän raskaampi kuin ehkä heti odottaisi. Mutta miksi tämä albumi on pakko kuulla? Kuulostaa hieman omanlaiseltaan, muttei ollenkaan maata mullistavalta tai tosi taitavalta.
Pulled into the 3s by one song
This is Moby Grape's self titled debut album. Psychadelic country rock, kinda like Sgt Pepper era Beatles. Average song length is like 2 minutes, and the songs feel unfinished. Like they don't wind down, or come to any kind of conclusion, they just end. Feels like they rushed to get the album out and had 3/4 of an idea for a song and said fuck it, that's good enough Favourite songs: Ain't No Use, Mr. Blues, Fall on You, Changes Least favourite songs: Sweet Ride (Never Again), Bitter Wind 2/5
I was only able to listen to 9 out of the 18 songs, Spotify would not play the others
Asså... Ok.
Absolutely nothing special. Inoffensive.
sorry I do not like it
This album stands out in the list of the average records because of how incredibly average and ordinary it is. After listening to it, I can't say anything about any of the songs - it just came and went, almost unnoticeable. A big waste of time. I bet there is a lot of random "quirky" bands in 60s and 70s, but it's really not worth listening to it today. Just let them die with dignity.
Man, this one was a struggle to find as a whole. It's like the same 60s sound I heard yesterday, but maybe more bluesy without being 100% 12-bar blues. 2*, but more enjoyable than the Sonics. Enjoyed: Lazy me
It's the kind of album that deserves a 2.5 I guess
Not for me. A lot of very short tracks that never really go anywhere.
Well produced album with some skillful playing but ultimately a little flat
Eh
There is just no way this album deserves to be on this list. So so so much better stuff from the decade. Never heard of them, no cultural relevance. This is my biggest gripe with this challenge. So much of it is so mediocre with no hook to why it was interesting at the time.
meh. album really has a late sixties sound. So if you like that 67 sound, this is the album for you. But that's the total identity (\"1967 sound\") this album has for me. usually listen on tidal, but their Moby Grape album is messed up. only has tracks 14-18 from a bonus album, so those songs aren't even on the original album. So listened on youtube.
Nothing about this really stands out to me besides it being a 60s rock album. Also could only find it on youtube.
I liked the sound, but I didn't particularly enjoy any song.
Got what I expected: okay it didn't sound awful but it was nothing new at all. Same old 60s rock which I feel I have heard a bajillion times. Also the whole album wasn't on spotify which a lot of the time is enough said. Not sure if it is at all influential for this list.
Sadly most of this album was not available on Spotify. Only the following songs were available for streaming: Mr. Blues 8:05 Indifference Rounder Looper Bitter Wind Sweet Ride These guys were new to me. I love the west coast 60's sound also reminiscent of Gram Parson, The Flying Burrito Brothers, early Grateful Dead, etc. How have I never heard of this band before? I do like their sound and will give a favorable review given how little I've heard. I would like to hear the rest of the album.
Honestly I thought it was kind of a boring, generic white boy band.
Workmanlike late 60s psych-rock. I'm sure in its day it was groundbreaking, but here they sound like also-rans.
Never really got into it
This is terrible.
Pouah... chiant un peu nan?!
Sounds like an average 60s album.
album niet compleet
Decent enough. Rolls along nicely, but mostly forgettable.
Slow and soft, probably won't listen again
It folksy, got bored.
Had a Yardbirds feel.
Never heard of them or any of their songs. A few good melodies but uneven vocals and genre contortions.
It was okay, seemed pretty generic
4 Songs are not playable on Spotify but the rest of the album was alright but it felt really short with them missing songs
Me lleva a otra época. Maomeno.
This is a hard one to find online! About 20 minutes to find somewhere with all the songs on it! It wasn't really worth the effort. The write up said that label and legal issues tanked their career and left this album a cult item... But honestly I think this passable San Fran psych did about as well as you'd expect from it's songs?
60s San Francisco soft rock. Sounds exactly like you would expect, and also a bit like the Byrds in places. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Hey Grandma Date listened: 20/06/23
Sadly this band's history is more interesting and more rock and roll than their music
Maybe because I had to flip back and forth between Spotify and Youtube, but I didn't find this all that interesting.
Less interesting than being g-raped by Moby
Nice psych/country/garage fusion, but also pretty damn typical of the late 60s. I kinda liked it, but it didn't really need to be on this list. Just barely misses the 3 stars for me.
Just fine.
4/10
This band was not going to be the next Beatles. This is boring. And while I feel bad for what happened to them, they are not very good musically.
A majority of this album is not available on Spotify and based on the few songs that are I don't really think it's worth tracking down the rest of them. Not my vibe.
Not bad but not for me.
There are definitely some nice moments in this album, especially the acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies. The songwriting very much passes me by though.
2,5
Moby Grape has some promise but ultimately disappoints. Good energy, not enough stuff that makes me want to stick around. 2.
Had I arrived at the keg party in the woods in high school and heard this, I would have been psyched for a good night. Now…meh.
Kinda generic, it’s like all 60’s bands rolled into one. Reminds me of the Beatles at times, the who, the dead and the singer sort of reminds my of joe cocker in a couple moments. Not terrible but some of the guitar playing and drumming was a little annoying
It's not so bad, just old
Pleasant and all but very little to grasp. The general sound is good - but the record is forgotten the minute it stops playing. Maybe it needs further listens but with the same amount of attention as all other records are given - this falters.
Man this was exhausting to get through
He's a bit melodramatic? I feel like I could have lived in the 60s. Music is limited in scope. Didn't have to go too far down the dial to get the same thing.
Dated harmony heavy psychedelic rock. It doesn't hold up for me and there's little here to keep me engaged. Lazy Me is OK.
Oh wow late 60s psychedelia, fucking shock me. 2.5/5.
Þetta er allt í lagi, svo sem. Kveikir ekkert í mér.
Too happy
Dated Folk Rock.
Very much reflective of the era in which it was recorded, and very skilled writers and performers. Too psychedelic in its recording and production for my listening tastes -- my never-ending bizarre contradiction as a long-time wanna-be hippie -- but that's just my own aural bias.
It is certainly music… not too much distinct between it and many late 60s groups, though. Not bad but not standout. 4/10
Very rock & roll and nothing else, but not my cup of tea... Nothing exceptional that made me like the genre or any extra power coming from the album.... 2.5/5
Not much to say about this one. Felt like nothing special honestly. Favorite Song: Omaha
Ok, but a bit forgettable.
boy idk this is boring and fine
Just not as good as other big bands in 60s
There isn't muich to comment on here. It's a 60s rock album. It doesn't offend, but then it isn't setting my world alight either. It's fine.
Really really really average 60s rock. I didn't hear anything particularly memorable or genre-defining. The best song is 55 seconds long. Spotify doesn't even have the full album, had to scour Youtube for the rest.
Sounded like a 60s movie montage soundtrack. Ok but wont be back.
Some tracks missing from spotify
Never heard of these guys. Seems kind of like the Grateful Dead. Ok for me. 2/5
Moby Grape by Moby Grape (1967) They were supposed to be ‘the next big thing’ upon this debut album’s release, but they fizzled, and the reasons are evident on the record: five members, five lead vocalists, five front men, five songwriters, five egos. Plus, they were atrociously (over-)managed, but that’s backstory. This album could have been great. The talent was there. The opening track “Hey Grandma” shows their ability, and their ability to work together, when they applied themselves. But (except for track four, “8:05”) it really goes downhill from there. Mostly psychedelic rock, but it lacks the absorbing power of Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, or many others. A qualifier is appropriate here: I never listened to them stoned. Since they were all five vocalists, it is noteworthy that they didn’t have a smooth vocal blend. Compare with CSN (with even the later Y), and there’s no comparison. Moby Grape was less than the vocal sum of its parts. Similar observations could be made about the competing guitar arrangements and performances. This ain’t The Eagles. The laughably surreptitious flipping of the bird and the cheesy faux political dying of the American flag in commie red on the cover photo adds to the plasticity (Oooooh, they’re so revolutionary, Cindy!). Too bad. These guys could really sing. 2/5
Felt like it was gonna be a banger at the beginning but petered out pretty quickly after a few tracks. Spotify version was also missing a few songs.
Moyen toujours pareil
Rockish but not wholly unenjoyable
I thought it was going to be a moby album when I saw the name but alas this is just another inoffensive rock record from the sixties
Not really my jam. It's fine.
Alright. Doubt I’ll ever listen to it again.
album wasn't available on spotify except for two songs and a few bonus tracks. moby grape feels like an unimaginative neil young covering bob dylan.
Fint.
not bad. Wonder why this band never really achieved lasting success like a lot of the similar bands of the era. probably the name was just too stupid
Like San Fran californian hippy surf rock. The kinda stuff that people say The Beatles did really well. Not so much my bag, alright though. Also, album cover looks like it might be The Red Victorian where me Jim and Scott stayed in San Fran. Decent musicians, kinda bluesy at times, but just wasn't loving it. 2/5
Best leuk, maar niet blijven hangen
I only had maybe 35% of the songs because of Spotify, but it was...eh. Basic 60s blandness.
meh
Uninteresting [some tracks unavailable on Spotify]
For whatever reason I can only access 2 songs and the bonus tracks in Spotify. Probably just as well, hippy folk music from the 60s hasn't aged fantastically. Have you heard California Dreaming? Yeah, it's that but not as catchy.
A lot of the songs were blocked on Spotify for some odd reason. The few I heard weren't bad but wasn't my style.
generic falsetto vocals
Ehh, it was a little bit whispery and weird. I appreciated the music, but not so much the singing.
Hard to go higher when half the tracks are missing from spotify
Nope
Tracks: Omaha
Don't know at all Moby Grape. Top track: Changes
Got that sound of the psychedelic rock but just isn’t good. Maybe spotify is missing songs
Great harmonies. Otherwise boring
Nada especial o llamativo por aquí.
60s psych rock standard
Apple music doesnt have : / sounded good though lol
60s we definitely weird
Never a good start when the album is not available as a unit on Spotify. Standard sunshine and drugs psychedelic rock, there are too many of these albums on this list. This is like worse Byrds. It ends on a high note with Indifference though.
Never heard of Moby Grape before and now I know why.
Oooof i think they thought they were pretty cool…
Out of all the musical achievements that transpired in 1967 and chronicled in the book, Moby Grape's debut is one that you just had to be there to appreciate. Overall: 2/10
p106. 1967. 1 star. Insipid 60s West Coast hippy noodling with no tunes.
A forgettable album by a band to at sounds like 12 other bands from the same time
Full album not on streaming services. No Rating.
It's an album on this list.
Somewhat distinct sounding vocals, otherwise fairly common sounding run of the mill 60s music. Why is this on here?
Bored the piss out of me. Low rent version of Mamas and the Papas. In fact, it’s every 60s-70s folk rock band you’ve ever heard, but generic.
60s nonsense.
Previously unknown. Meh.
Boring, stopped listening after track two
Southern rock, rock, not sure. Music doesn’t impress, boring. Knock offs of other band sounds.
Meh
2/10 - yaaaaawwwwnnn
Kann ich leider nicht hören! ??
Two stars. A lot to like, a lot of good playing and cool ideas. There’s like two things happening here, a really good rock band and vocal harmonies. I don’t think it’s a very good mix the lyrics and vocals aren’t my thing. But that song Hoochie is really great. Oh I think this linked to the wrong album. I listened to ‘69. 805. Please change your mind before my sunshine is gone. I do not like these lyrics. On the heels of watching love actually last night I’m not in the mood for shmaltzy problematic bullshit. The guy singing this is a pathetic loser and needs to know when to let go.
#15 Yawn, I'm not impressed, less 60s please 🥱
Not for me. 1/5
Over-earnest vocals, terrible smooshy mastering, jangley echoes of 50s rock n roll - this album has all the trademarks of a 1. Took everything in my power to not skip any (all) songs on it. Pretty sure the bass on "hoochie" just played the same note the entire thing...
Nothing special thus far. It feels very similar to other albums of that ear. Changes feels like I'm watch a road trip segment from a 70's movie. It's not bad and is a mix of other musical styles from the time. I wouldn't leave the room but if I wasn't trying to listen to the whole album I would have changed it.
No. 1.4
Sounds like the Beatles. I don't like the Beatles lol
Well this sucks.
Lo saque de tanto aburrimiento
Rating: 0.5 This album commits the worst sin an old album can commit: sounding old. They don’t have ears for a hit at all, they just do the twangy boring Creedence Clearwater thing worse with a fake and more atonal Jim Morrison on vocals. I almost fell asleep and crashed my car listening to this. Stay far away.
Who?
The whole album wasn’t on Spotify so I went over to YouTube. Honestly - this wasn’t worth sitting through ads to hear. Ho-hum late 60s rock.
Contains the worst that late 60s rock had to offer: ratty guitars, earnest folky harmonies, bloozy faux-tough lead vocals, thin reverb-coated drums - all in service of songs that are strictly also-rans. Stick this one back in the time capsule.
Lame ass sounding The Beatles wannabes
Forgettable
Find these kinds of albums so difficult to listen to
Spotify didn’t have the whole album, so I listened to a couple of the tracks they did before searching out the whole thing. The 2 tracks I listened to told me enough I wasn’t going to enjoy it, so I didn’t bother.
1/5 not a fan
boring.
Not that good
Very vanilla, not terrible but nothing stands out for me.
uninteresting late 60s blues/guitar pop. The story of the band is interesting though. 1.2
1. bluez - 1 2. 8.05 - 1.5 3. indiferrence - 1 4. rounder - 1.5 5. looper - 1 6. difference - 1 7. uuind - 1 8. ride - 1

Sorry No. I understand the list is skewed to the late 60s/early 70s boomer era. It's absolutely the Golden era and I love so much from then. Maybe this was influential? But it absolutely does not stand the test of time. It's really really mediocre. I kind of liked one tune but was bored by all the rest. Kind of makes a mockery of the lists bias towards a certain milieu.
That was a lot of songs. It faded for me into the background and didn’t resonate much.
Jeebus, that was a boring ass record.
Rather generic 60s groove. No outstanding melodies or musical style here.
Me: it’s only 24 minutes. I can listen to anything for 24 minutes. Also me: [Checks watch every 2 minutes] Sounded like half the band was playing a different song from the other half.
No.
60’s
This album (or at least what was of it on Spotify) is under 30 minutes, snd it still felt like a chore to get through. Just weird, annoying, generic late 60s rock. I really am in disbelief as to how much uninteresting music has actually managed to earn a place on this list.
I can’t find this anywhere.
Garbage
Slechts enkele tracks beschikbaar op de streamingdiensten.
The authors favourite era. Feels like 501 albums are from 67-69
Terrible
Doesn't really do much for me. Very reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, both of whom I find pretty mediocre. Not sure what I'm missing here. There certainly is a lot of bad blues rock on this list.
Pretty generic 60s rock. Nothing about it does anything for me.
Unavailable on Spotify
Quintessential 60’s boy band… not for me
Eh
Ikke fundet
You what! This band is dull and just 60s wallpaper
Sigh. Not another of these.
1 star. i can pass on ever hearing this album.
trash
Mid not really my type of music kinda sounded like a mix of country and old
This is just awful. Head scratching how this even got on this list. 2/10.
They're ok. wouldn't listen again
Can't listen to an album that doesn't exist online
Didn’t like. Grape Jam is a better album
