alright alt rock album, with some grunge undercurrents

You can't really go wrong with any of the albums REM put out in the 80s. Green is probably my least favorite of that era, although it's still better than most albums that came out in '88. It's one of their most accessible of their earlier albums, and the band is solid as always. Graded on the curve of their own work though, this is a bit of a mixed bag. Most of the singles I can take or leave, but there are some excellent deep tracks worth listening to. High 3, rounded to a 4. Fave Songs: Orange Crush, World Leader Pretend, Hairshirt, I Remember California, You Are the Everything, Stand

Has anyone ever noticed that Fall On Me (I know, it's not on this album) sounds like he's saying "Banh Mi"? This is a fine album, but Life's Rich Pageant is more reflective of the band.

R.E.M. is one of my favorite bands though these my commercial aimed songs like Pop Song 89 and Stand push me away a bit. World Leader Pretend, Orange Crush, Turn You Inside-Out and You are the Everything are the strong songs on this album that i think fondly about. Much more introspective, with either the thoughtful tone of World Leader or the more aggressive energy of Orange Crush... both are done so well. Thoroughly enjoy this album, but the pop market aimed songs here don't age so well.

Existing between perhaps the band two best albums this middle child certainly has its own personality but doesn’t offer the staying power of its older or younger brothers. It’s still a SOLID late 1980s alternative album. Pieced together by superb production and Michael Stipes manic performance.

Som att bandet hittat en ok melodi, ett ok riff, sedan nöjt sig med det och kör det genom hela låten, som bara blir platt. Det finns en tonartshöjning i slutet av 'Stand' men den är bara parodisk. Papparock på det dåliga sättet. Några låtar höjer sig lite över mängden - 'You Are The Everything', 'The Wrong Child', 'I Remember California'. Bästa låt: I Remember California.

Honestly this was just fine. I was never a huge R.E.M. fan; maybe it has to do with the slightly annoying singing. Found the album to be solid from start to finish. 6/10.

I guess for influential, this is an influential album because it lead to the next one. But considering how successful "Out of Time" was, I'm surprised this one is selected.

Kinda meh. Sounds like the soundtrack to a punk-ish coming of age movie. I can see people vibing to it, but it isn't particularly interesting to me.

For the most part, it's decent. I would like R.E.M more but Michael Stipe's voice just irritates the hell out of me. That said, Orange Crush is an all time classic. On the opposite end, Stand is one of my least favourite tracks. Never liked that song even though it was a sizeable hit. Overall it's OK.

This was a nice album. Unfortunately I can't say much more, it came and went. I see that it is lauded, and I am a fan of REM, but it wasn't memorable.

Number two from R.E.M., and that's two so far that don't include "Losing My Religion." Yes, I'm going to point that out on all of them. I'd be lying if I said I made it through this album without stopping to listen to "Losing My Religion" a few times on loop. That said, this is a great one. Michael Stipe's voice is so distinct, it just gives a cool edge to this music which, otherwise, might not have been all that great. Though lyrically, these guys really know what they're doing. Great songwriting. Some undeniable bangers on here, like "Stand" and "Orange Crush." Really like these guys, they've got the sauce. Favorite tracks: Orange Crush, Stand, You are the Everything, Untitled. Album art: A yellowed-out shot of what seems to be a treeline seen from below? Not entirely sure. It's not bad. The font is nice and strong. Not terribly memorable but it's good enough. 4/5

Didn't know what I was expecting to going into a R.E.M album but I enjoyed this. Short and well balanced album.

R.E.M. are a weird band. Objectively I understand why people like them, but at the same time find it wild that people could think this is the greatest music they’ve ever heard!

I think I always thought of this album as the midway point between R.E.M being an indy band and getting huge. The one album that could keep everyone happy. Life’s Rich Pageant was always my favourite but can’t argue this one.

Sigh. I will admit that there is some R.E.M. that I get and enjoy, and other R.E.M. that I don't really get. This album has a certain sameness to a lot of the material which makes it hard to get excited about what is almost certainly great musicianship and songwriting. The lone exception is "Orange Crush" which just appears as a total breath of fresh air out of nowhere in the middle of the album. "World Leader Pretend" was a fairly big hit for them but is in the same idiom as the rest of the album. I wasn't impressed. I know there are R.E.M albums I like a lot. This isn't one of them. It's fine.

This is the first REM album I owned and listened to in repeat forever. This album is so full of nostalgia for me and that may color my rating a bit. You Are the Everything and World Leader Pretend are my two favorite non hit tracks, but honestly there isn’t a single song that doesn’t hit home for me. My advice is…Go Listen to it now!

R.E.M. is one of those bands that I heard a lot of growing up, but never really liked very much for the lead singer's voice. Always kind of imagined a Kermit the Frog like character when listening as a kid. Anyway.. Listening today, I can appreciate a lot of what this album has to offer. R.E.M. made some damned catchy pop music that inside of a 41 minute runtime hit all the highs (Pop Song 89, Orange Crush, Stand) and lows (The Wrong Child, Hairshirt, Untitled) servicably. Overall a 4/5 for a clean, very listenable album with Orange Crush, Stand, and Pop Song 89.

The singer of R.E.M. has such a distinct voice. I honestly didn't think he was American. I've never listened to R.E.M. outside of their hits. Guitar and the mandolin/ukelele are on point in "You Are The Everything" and "The Wrong Child". Reminds me of Eddie Vedder. Orange Crush rules.

Lauren was not down to listen to NIN. So we compromised with R.E.M. Doesn't do too much for me but it does blow my mind that this came out in 88. Sounds pretty ahead of its time. Some stand(outs) to me were obviously Stand, I Remember Cali, and Orange Crush. I loved playing that song on Rock Band

Jangling and nice but a bit bland for me.

R.E.M. is one of those bands that are only a few standard deviations away from me loving them. It’s a little bit of Dylan, a little bit of alt rock, but the package just never comes together for me. Not bad, just not something I really enjoyed.

this is imo the median rem album — nothing super special, and even then they’re a 2-4 band for me basically always.

I have a love-hate relationship with REM. I do know that I tend to like their earlier works. Haven’t dived into their discog in a while, but I remember not liking anything after Life’s Rich Pageant (my favorite album of theirs). Upon relistening to this, I’m pretty sure my opinion still stands. There were tracks that I actually really liked such as You are Everything, World Leader Pretend, and Untitiled. There’s one song in particular that I really can’t “Stand” that I feel has no place in the album at all. Admittedly, the instrumentation is solid throughout, and there are some catchy hooks like on Orange Crush, even though I don’t particularly like that song. Edit: couple listens in I like it a bit better now, I was gonna go for a 2, but I’ll settle with a 3

Orange crush and I remember California are the only ones that stuck out to me. Other than that it all was pretty brutal to get through….kinda torn between a 2 and a three. Gonna flip a coin rq.

I love Michael Stipe and REM. This album didn’t grab me as much as the others. A few great songs like Stand and Orange Crush of course. It’s not bad enough to give it a 3 so I’m giving it a four!

This list has really forced me to really reckon with whether I like REM or not. They’re on here like five times! Turns out I do. Orange crush rules and the rest of the album ain’t half bad

Excellent 2nd outing with Scott Litt producing. The previous album, Document, changed everything for me and REM, and this is a good next step. Nice to hear the mandolins again :-)

What an interesting sound. Every song on this album is a standout.

After the thrill of their fifth album “Document”, one year later R.E.M hone their sound in a more commercial direction… with slightly more mixed results. “Green” is certainly confident, often catchy, and definitely polished, but there’s a discernible drop in overall quality. Sure, “Pop Song 89” is a lithe and lively opener. “World Leader Pretend”’s statement packs a decent punch with chewy minor chords and lilting slide guitar. But one of the main issues here is a lack of thematic or tonal consistency. “Get Up” and “Stand” are both earworms and good fun to jump around and sing along to, but they’re also obnoxiously peppy pop songs with cloying refrains (“GET up! GET up! GET up!” “Now face north!”) and nursery rhyme-style melodies. Fun on a first listen, and still fun on a fifth…. but perhaps not much longevity beyond that. On the other end of the scale, the band suddenly veer towards whiplash-inducing dark and brooding songs (the cavernous “The Wrong Child” and “Hairshirt” are dirges to wallow in, weight without gravity). Mandolin is back with a vengeance here, edging closer towards its star turn in “Losing My Religion”. It’s best utilised on sleepy, quietly arresting “You Are The Everything”, the high point of the album as far as ballads are concerned. It might pull itself too roughly in drastically different directions, but I still enjoy much of “Green”. Arriving right in the middle, its best single song is “Orange Crush”, which deftly marries the two opposing styles described above. There’s an opaque-bordering on nonsensical lyric, gimmicky call-and-response vocal and mysterious, dark undertone, but it walks the line between all three very well. More of this would have been lovely.

It's been a while since I've listened to Green. It was good to get back to some R.E.M. I apparently have missed hearing a few songs ("Get Up", "You Are the Everything", "World Leader Pretend"). There are other favorites on this album too, but I've heard them more recently ("Stand", "Orange Crush") and they didn't sound quite as fresh as the forgotten favorites. Green is an album that you can hear hints of the following album (Out of Time) with mandolin parts, and the delivery of Michael Stipe's lyrics. I think that Green still has strong ties to early R.E.M. too. Green is definitely a pivot point between the R.E.M. of new discovery, to the band that filled arenas during the 1990s. I should visit Green more often.

I can respect the songwriting and the themes of these, but I find their sound underwhelming and Michael Stipe's voice annoying. Hard for me to understand why some people were calling them the best band in the world when this came out.

Trying to articulate what makes R.E.M. so great is as difficult as trying to deconstruct Michael Stipe's cryptic lyrics. They are hard to pin down, but their sound walks a delicate line between an uplifting and heartbreaking. In a word: beautiful. Something that rock music tends to shy away from. That beauty most likely stems from a certain vulnerability they display, particularly in Michael Stipe's voice.

Wish I liked R.E.M. more, but I just find it mostly middling. It's not quite avant-garde enough, it still has its feet planted in accessibility and familiarity of song structures that I've never vibed with them much. I do respect Michael Stipe though.

Did Michael Stipe listen to The Smiths and think to himself "Yes, I fancy being Morrissey for my next album"? Stand is the only standout track.

Really good. This is the best REM record I’ve heard but I feel like it’s not as talked about as Murmur or Automatic.

This album relies on the mandolin than any other rock record that I can think of. A good record but I’m not a big REM fan so I’m not at all blown away by it.

A good record but not one I’d really need to hear again. Stand was a highlight for me, maybe because I already knew it.

For the most part, I feel like the album was kinda bland. There are a few tracks that stand out more (Pop Song 89, Orange Crush, Turn You Inside-Out), but nothing that really captivated me.

I do like a little bit of REM tbh: sounded much like their other music but there is something I love about that. That voice is found no where else in music and it just screams america in such a cool way. Until now I had only listened to 4-5 of their most famous songs but I will definitely think about listening to others.

Never been much of a fan. I get their appeal and see/hear that they are talented, but they've just never been my bag.

Notable tracks include single "Orange Crush" and "The Wrong Child" along with "World Leader Pretend". Michael Stipe has a very unique and recognizable voice, and it works extremely well with the sound of the rest of the band and music they make. My first introduction to R.E.M. was "Orange Crush" when we had to analyze the lyrics during my one and only stint in summer school for English between 7th and 8th grade, and while it never made me outright pursue listening to more, it's a fantastic introduction to R.E.M. in general. I would later go on to hear and listen to their other widely known hits such as "It's The End of The World..." and "Losing My Religion" and enjoying them immensely. If I had to change one thing about this album I would probably remove "Stand". It's a not a bad song, but I don't think it adds much to the rest of the album. A solid album, with it being their 6th overall, Green definitely deserves to be listened to at least once, and perhaps I might come back to it someday.

Still not a fan of R.E.M.

In my opinion, this is R.E.M.’s breakthrough album: they finally produced an album that’s great to listen to from to finish and is filled with hits. Out of Time took affairs further, yes, but I’m perfectly happy with Green. Here’s for an album I had so much good time with during the nineties (mostly)!

I’ve said before that Green is in my top 5 REM albums, fighting it out with Life’s Rich Pageant for top spot, while Automatic for the People holds the door shut to keep Murmur from getting in. I divide REM into two eras, there are more but I’ll keep it simple. The two eras are Before Document and After Document. Green is the best of that latter period. It updates some styles from the earlier period and takes the rock elements that came in during Document. I was 19 when Green came out and it was in constant rotation. They’re all pretty great, but standouts for me are Pop Song 89, Orange Crush, The Wrong Child, World Leader Pretend and the Untitled cut that ends the album. Heck, even Stand, though killed by overplay at the time, is a pop gem with its Cars-like chorus. It was great to revisit this album!

This is one of those albums I was glad to be around for at its time. I have almost always been slow on the uptake of music but this was one I heard and it landed...did I kknow of Document or Life's Rich Pageant before...nope... did I care? Eventually. But with this and Automatic For The People I was a late but pretty solid fan of this band. 5 stars!

Trying very hard to ‘get’ REM beyond the master singles and the odd album - but this one - besides a few really good tracks - again kind of leaves me underwhelmed.

I always remembered not liking this band based on the singles I’d heard but this slapped. The Wrong Child is the best song on this album.

That's is is REM transitioning their sound out of the Friends coffee shop era and into their later more mature sound. It's good, but there are better in the discography to come.

actually i like green but only the color

I’m shocked to see only one 5 star review for this. All I can say is what this meant to me when it came out. As a kid who was unsure of where or how to fit in, this was a world that I could inhabit. This was a place that felt like it belonged to me and that had tremendous depths to explore. Maybe it doesn’t sound new or different because of everything that’s been influenced by it. It was just serious enough to take seriously, just fun enough to be fun, just rocking enough to be rock, and just different enough from everything else to define the alternative. For an album this weird to be as successful as it was in the monoculture times, and break through to present itself to kids like me was almost a miracle. It was a gateway to a million other things but on its own it just about saved me.

Another pleasant surprise! Never dug REM, and still don’t to a certain extent! However, this was inoffensive and pleasant to hear! Wouldn’t rush to it again, but wouldn’t switch it off either. So another solid 3 star effort.

Very good album - I missed it first time round, because I didn't start listening to them until Losing My Religion. If I'd heard this, I wonder if I'd have been hooked then.

I suspect tell REM fans will tell me I’m wrong but I rather liked everything after Green more than Green and before. Still some excellent tracks here - Orange Crush and World Leader Pretend stand out - and a highly polished, mature album.

I believe this was the 1st REM tape I ever bought. I fully came around to their greatness after hearing Automatic For The People. This was 1993 I think. They would become one of my favorite bands ever. "Pop Song 89"-Great song. Catchy and energetic and playful. 8 "Get Up"-not their best song, but decent filler, which REM is capable of, for better or worse. 4 "You Are Everything"-what a beautiful song. 7 "Stand"-Of course I've heard it a billion times. It's undeniable and annoying. Peter Buck rules this song. Great solo. It modulates. Stupid video. Get a Life. 9 "World Leader Pretend"-Forgot how good this one is. Mike Mills piano FTW 8 The Wrong Child-this one doesn't floor me at all. Filler 3 Orange Crush-Badass song. More Peter Buck brilliance. One of his most rockin performances. "The One I Love" retread. Sort of. Plus a little vietnam or something and soda? 10 Turn You Inside Out is filler. Its ok. 'Finest Worksong" with a dumb chorus of "I believe in watching you" or "what you do". Its not important. 4 Hairshirt is no Harbourcoat. This album is starting run out of steam. 4 ' I dont remember I remember California. probably a reason for that. They had already released Out of Time and Automatic by the time i heard tyhis full record. No time for bad REM. That would come later.4 Untitled. more filler. 4 I fucking love REM This is good. The highs are high enough and the filler is filler. they will make a better record next time. And an even better one after that. Green is a 6 of an album. 3 stars for a 5 star band.

R.E.M. seemed to be THE alternative band of the 80's. Originally backed by I.R.S. Records (with A&M as their distributor), R.E.M. enjoyed a successful run of albums before jumping over to Warner Bros. With better overseas distribution and maintaining creative control, R.E.M. set out to try new things on Green. Mandolin, accordion, cello, and steel guitar are broken out to bring new sonic textures to the signature R.E.M. sound. Oddly enough, it's the song Orange Crush that stands out as the best on the album, and it's without any of the new approaches to songwriting. If we're talking brass tacks, R.E.M.'s run in the 80's is great, no matter which album you choose. There's a consistent songwriting quality that gives their brand an alternative rock something to appreciate.

A bit mixed. I enjoyed the album, but not as much as I thought I would. There are a couple of pretty great songs here such as World Leader Pretend or Orange Crush. But also a couple that border on the boring and on the whole the album doesn't seem very cohesive. REM can and did do better than this, so I'm not sure why this one is so popular. Worst of the 4 REM albums we've had so far. Still rounding it up from 3.5 stars though, but just barely.

how the hell was this their 6th album? REM have this knack of having a few songs that are grungey, interesting and really good surrounded by the most dull middle of the road boring shit. In this albums case, orange crush, stand and pop song 89 are worth listening to, the rest of it is not.

One Saturday morning I was in Debenhams with my daughter. A store worker was doing a demo of some invisible ink, whereby he would write something on his arm and cover it up with the ink and it would disappear, much to the amazement of my 5 year old. I was forced to buy some and she had a wonderful afternoon being a little magician. She soon tired herself out and whilst she was asleep on my lap, I decided to have some fun. I called my wife over to watch as I wrote "twat" on my daughter's forehead. My wife told me to grow up and was not impressed by the invisibility at all. The following day I get a call from my daughter's school. They tell me that someone had written something on my daughter's head and explained that all of the other students were being questioned and not allowed to leave until one of them had owed up to writing it. Turns out the insivibilty ink wears out after several hours, so over the course of the morning, the word "twat" slowly appeared on her forehead. They never did find out who the culprit was.

i dont know what all the hype is over this band. his voice is nasally and goofy. the jangle chords over upbeat sunny pop rock is silly. i dont understand. i dont. its not compelling, it washes over you like the sound of waves (if it was beach rock that would rule), its got know spirit. white noise. boo.

I liked a lot of these songs, but for whatever reason this didn't hit as a full album for me

I got my spine I got my orange crush Also Stipe just makes a meal of the word ‘conscious’. Legend.

Some good tunes here, but it's nothing against their Automatic for The People album.

Nothing wrong with this, but it's kinda bland alternative. Some of the singles are still getting played on the radio in 2023 so that's something. Non-single tracks not worth talking about. There is a truly fantastic 6/5 REM album if you cherry pick across their whole career, but this album on its own is a 3/5.
