Orange is the new green.

R.E.M. is one of those bands that I constantly underestimate because they weren’t that “cool” when I was really getting into music as a kid in the early 90’s. But this album was a pleasant surprise. I’ve always known the hits, but there are some real gems on here.

Liked it better than their later one. Rating: 4.3

Of the four R.E.M. albums I've had, I think this is the weakest entry of the bunch. Still a really really good listen! R.E.M. is legendary and I couldn't give this any less than a 4 though.

A really bright and bouncy moment as the band tried to hurdle the gap between college rock radio and mainstream success. At times, that makes the work a bit shallow. Stand is an exercise in the simplicity of songwriting that wanders in and out of annoying. However, the power pop really shine and the balance of the acoustic instruments Peter Buck introduced (like the mandolin) really works for me. Green is ripe, to my ears.

As someone who has even liked REM in the past!: tbh I don't know why it made the list. Lousy poetry, not sold on the politics (in fairness, politics are fucking hard to write about cleverly and convincingly), musically meh, and the interplay between lyrics/vocals and music meh.

this wasn’t anything special, but it wasn’t anything bad, i think it was just very run of the mill, there was a song or two that i found fun and a bit nostalgic even though i’ve never heard them before, there was a familiarity to the album which i enjoyed, i wouldn’t be mad if i heard the album again, but i wouldn’t go out of my way to.

Hmm, this is a band just starting to get into their stride...but the brilliance of Out of Time and Automatic for the People is a way off yet. Favourite track: Orange Crush

Michael Stipe's voice is fantastic. I forget how much I love R.E.M.'s melodic tones. Love this album. Love the instrumental experimentation. That being said, it leaves a lot of excitement on the table.

One of those albums that saved my life. R.E.M. made me realise there was music outside the confines of what the commercial stations played us. Ironically they were on the cusp of commercial success. My forever big regret is not lying to my parents that I was working and going to see them at the Horden Pavilion in 1989 on their Australian Tour.

A well-loved album from one of my favorite bands. There are better R.E.M. albums, but this is the first one I owned and it has a special place in my heart.

This album starts off quite strong but then Stand and Orange Crush just steal the show so much so that I listened to the album a third time and skipped those two tracks and yeah it's not too bad overall. Faves the two aformentioned, Pop Song 89, and I Remember California.

Great stuff - the mandolin really does unlock the magic! This is in a kind of sweet spot for me, in that I recognize some of the singles, for sure, but wasn't subject to having them overplayed. Fave tracks - "Pop Song '89" is a great opener, "Orange Crush" for the upbeat poppier numbers, and, hmmm, lemme see, "Hairshirt" for the more slowed down esoteric ones....

Honestly never gave them much of a chance, but I’m familiar with (and enjoy) many of their hits. They have their own sound, for sure. This almost makes me nostalgic for the time riiiiight before I was born.

Nothing offensive about this. R.E.M. has always been a "greatest hits" band for me generally speaking. Maybe it was groundbreaking or very innovative in indie rock for it's time and michale stipe is a very iconic voice in both lyrics and general tone but nothing outside of Orange Crush really hits for me.

i listened to it while falling asleep yesterday so no big review. but i liked it. rem is weird like they might be giants. Orange Crush & Stand were very good in particular

I’ve listened to one REM album on Ashley’s recommendation and really liked it, so I’m excited. Pop song 89 - catchy and vibey Stand - I am bopping my head at my desk to this one The wrong child - I really like the folksy sound of the mandolin with the lead singer’s voice Orange crush - sad boi hours. A good pace change Hairshirt - least fav song so far I remember California - baller drums Untitled - also eh. Solid album, I like it a lot!

This was the first CD I ever owned. Not my favorite R.E.M. album, but certainly a trip down memory lane. Ah to be walking in a denim jacket, bright yellow Sony Diskman in the pocket, skipping more than it was playing... Solid album. A transitional from their young college rock days to the adult contemporary soft rock band they became. It would be a 3 but for the nostalgia.

Solid REM pop album. Older stuff is better.

I have tried to get into REM a few times before with little success, so I am surprised how much I like this album. There are a few songs that I'm not super crazy about so this is probably closer to a 4, but I am feeling generous and I can see this growing to a 5 on future listens.

Apparently R.E.M has a lot of hidden gems albums that I have never heard of. Radio and tv definitely overplayed a lot of their songs like "Shiny Happy People" or "Losing My Religion", whereas any song from this record would do wonders. Very solid album, full of good songs that I like. Maybe I do have to look into this band more carefully.

REM is the ultimate indie/college band. Very experimental within their own style. Green isn't their best album, but it's still got some bangers.

They're inoffensive but I just find them quite bland.

Orange Crush is great and the rest isn't. Probably a high 2 but not a 3.

Auf diesem Album kann man schon den musikalischen Richtungswechsel zum Mainstream erkennen und die Richtung des zukünftigen Stils wird ab hier eingeschlagen. "We are the Everything" und "Hairshirt" sind im typischen Mandolinenstil. "Orange Crush", "Stand" und "Pop Song 89" sind herausragende Songs im rauheren Stil. Insgesamt ein gutes Album, ein Zeichen für die ganz großen Alben, die noch folgen.

A collection of catchy rock tunes, not the worst thing I’ve heard. At worst it just sounds generic. Maybe I’ll come back to a few songs. This was good.

Ligt het aan mij, of klinkt elk nummer van REM hetzelfde? Het ligt prettig in het gehoor, daar niet van, een mooie combinatie van melancholiek en poppy, en je herkent het uit duizenden. Ze wekken de suggestie dat de teksten ergens over gaan, maar eerlijk gezegd heb ik er nog nooit naar geluisterd en het schijnt (zie Losing my religion) dat er toch geen chocola van te maken valt. Weinig afwisseling kortom, veel sfeer.

R.E.M. biedt altijd kwaliteit. Alles klopt. Maar daardoor is het allemaal te gelikt. Wellicht mag je daar in de jaren 80 blij mee zijn. Het kan ook prima voor een nummer. Maar een heel album wordt snel saai. Wat meer afwisseling had vast geholpen. Nu belandt het in de bak 'continue kwaliteit zonder uitschieters'.

Wikipedia omschrijft dit album met 2 stijlen: bubblegum en experimental rock. Beide dekken de lading absoluut niet en slaan de plank ook tegelijk compleet mis. Onder welk genre je het dan wel zou moeten plaatsen, zou ik ook even over na moeten denken. Indie misschien, maar dat is natuurlijk ook een nietszeggend catch-all genre. REM is een genre op zich. Als je REM hoort, en zeker uit deze periode, is het overduidelijk REM. De karakteristieke stem van Michael Stipe is voor mij als muziek in de oren, het is als het ware een apart instrument. Voor sommigen zal het ook iets teveel van het goede zijn allemaal, al die albums van REM in de lijst. Ik zou denk ik Document en Automatic for the People hoger inschalen, en ik wil op zich best wel een rangorde aangeven in de albums onderling, maar dit is gewoon een steengoed album. Hier wil ik ook een 5 voor kunnen geven. Dus dat doe ik dan ook gewoon lekker.

This certainly was a standout album and artist at the time. The hits were milestones of the time for sure, but they also have been played so frequently that this didn’t seem to hit me as much on the nostalgia level. The rest was ok. I’m middle of the road on this one. 3/5

As a fierce REM fan, I remember the day this major label debut dropped. We were all mortified that they had left the cool indie world of IRS Records to jump the shark into corporate rock of Warner Bros. These wounds were softened a bit when I learned that they did not choose the highest bidder, but instead chose WB due to maintaining 100% creative control. Still, with this move I had to accept the fact that the whole world would now know about this little band from Athens, GA. One of my favorite bands would no longer be an underground hidden kept secret. Seeing them from the front row on this tour made me like the album more and even today Green probably sits just outside my top 5 REM albums. It’s a really eclectic album that was known to be the result of the band trying to write some “dumb pop songs.” And on tour Stipe was adamant about introducing “Stand” every night as “the dumbest song ever written.” An irony lost on a lot of folks. “World Leader Pretend” was always my favorite song and was interestingly used a lot during the ‘88 Bush/Dukakis presidential run. A song that is probably even more relevant today.

REM knows how to live in the sweet spot. Stipe and Co tee it up on track one, hit the fairway and stay there for the majority of the album. They don’t take many chances, so I could see people getting bored with some of their stuff. I really enjoy this album, found it super listenable.

It was good. Nice musically. Sounds distinct. Still holds up today which is tough to say about a lot of 80s music. Orange Crush is a most enjoyable song.

I have this odd REM-block where I generally like their well-known songs, but can't get into the rest of their stuff. This albums clearly has some great and popular songs like "Stand" and "Orange Crush" but the rest of the album didn't speak to me. I was only able to listen to it once, so my rating may change with additional listening, but at the moment this isn't higher than a 3* for me. Now please excuse me while I put on Everybody Hurts and have a good day-long cry. Bye. 3.5/5

3.5 Second R.E.M. album this week and second time in this project that I've gotten two albums from the same artist very close together. More pop/commercial than Document, which isn't a negative for me, but it feels less impressive so I am going with the same rating.

Was ok to listen to, but nothing that I really could connect to. Nothing really bad, but nothing outstanding either.

Solid album

I don't think I would buy this album, but I enjoyed it. Maybe if I heard it again I might want to buy it.

I've always hated REM, and I just realized that may have been unfounded.

The sheers audacity to ironically name one of the songs Pop Song 89 and then have the rest of the album be completely middle of the road pop deserves praise. But other than that, I didn't find much here worth coming back to, very inoffensive. 2/5. The Fleet Foxes of the 80s.

Pretty good. Everything that is a clear influence on Oasis is much better than Oasis. This is not the first time, nor will it be the last time, that I complain about Oasis on an album that is nothing to do with them.

This has a clear sound and I enjoy parts but I wasn’t a fan of it song to song. So much of it sounded the same and I kept losing focus. Maybe I’m just not into R.E.M. but that’s part of the fun of doing this project. Orange Crush was definitely in a Guitar Hero or something and that brought me back, and Stand is featured in one of the funniest moments in Parks and Rec, so there’s definitely ways this album has endured haha

"Orange Crush" is clearly one of the best REM songs, but the rest of this album can do one.

I liked maybe one or two songs but I was quite bored listening to this..

This is the best R.E.M. album I’ve loved it since it came out. I listened to it 5 times yesterday

I can’t say that I love everything REM puts out, (and my gateway to the band was Out of Time instead of Green) but… it’s very hard not to like this album if you are a 90’s kid. It’s a solid, approachable rock album that influenced so much of what I later came to listen and love; in this one particular case the list got it right.

Is there a more 'self-aware' rock group than R.E.M.? Occasionally interesting music here. In my opinion. :)

Nostalgia

Listened while doing chores on a Sunday. Really nice. Recognized more songs than I thought I would

Unfortunate that I randomly got two REM albums back to back. For me, this one pales next to AFTP. Some good songs, but doesn’t quite hang together as an organic whole. Just OK in the end.

Well, this was better than I expected. Not ALL pop songs from FM radio overplay. Michael Stipes voice has some curious range and inflections. Lyrics are thoughtful too. I could listen to more of this!

I enjoyed this a lot. The vocal layering was interesting and it was cool to hear hits like Orange Crush in the context of the album.

I'm generally here for R.E.M.'s albums but this one didn't quite hit for me. Which is strange since it comes between "Document" and "Automatic for the People" - two of my favorite R.E.M. albums. Compared to those two, this one is just kinda... meh. Don't get me wrong, the musicianship is still great and the lyrics are still pure Stipe. It just feels kind of fuzzy. Like the guys weren't sure what they wanted this one to sound like so they just fumbled around until songs happened. Which is a little disappointing. I guess every band has their low points and when you have as many great albums as R.E.M., it's inevitable that at least one of them will be just okay. This is that album.

When it all came together for R.E.M. Just a great disc from front to back. Fabulous harmonies, great addled songwriting, and just musically solid. Nothing unexpected, but Turn You Inside-Out still rips.

Not a huge REM fan

Ripe with unique folk influence, and the underlying melodies sounds very traditional. Outstanding example of genre blending, but. Its an album not best suited for my taste, that being said I can appreciate this album and REM much more thanks to this 1001 albo challenge.

REM has never been one of my favorite bands, but I'm very familiar with them and always enjoy their music when it comes on. From this album, I think that Hairshirt is particularly touching.

I love R.E.M. and this is one amazing album. Many, many favorites here like World Leader Pretend, Untitled, You Are The Everything, The Wrong Child, etc. It’s only a 4 to me (it would be a 4.5) here when compared to other albums in the R.E.M. catalog that are flawless from beginning to end, but when compared to albums generally this could even be a 5. This album, like other R.E.M. albums, has a deep emotional imprint on me like only music that accompanied you in your formative years can have.

R.E.M.'s sixth album continues their political lyrics but departs musically from their previous material. Unlike their minor key college rock sounds, this album leaned into a major key more pop sounding music. This gives way to a highly melodic sound that is more upbeat. The songs are catchy and the album is well sequenced and is the perfect length.

Just couldn't get into it.

I knew the hits off this album but had never heard it in its totality. Overall, it seems like a much less self-serious version of the band - not better or worse, just different. I enjoyed it.

One of my favorite bands, this album ranks in my top 5 of their albums but probably in the 5th spot.

I think this album is great, and I actually like it more than any of their previous albums. Maybe I like sell-out sounds? After all, I think American Idiot is Green Day's best album. There's so much I love about the atmosphere of Green, and "Orange Crush" is as good as R.E.M. gets.

Ok, rem sound is just meh

I know this album is perfect, you know this album is perfect, so instead of wasting your time I want to give a shoutout to the user that wrote a cover article length treatise on why you should watch the Chris Elliot sitcom Get A Life for their review instead. Five stars.

Better things to come

I like a lot of REM songs and I'm familiar with a few songs here, but I have never listened to this album before. "Orange Crush" is one of my favorite REM singles and "Stand" is one of my least favorite, and this album kind of follows that trend. There are beautiful slow mandolin songs like "Hairshirt" and then too maudlin for me "The Wrong Child". There is the awesome political rocker "World Leader Pretend" and the less good "I Remember California". I listened to the Scotts and Lance Bangs talk about this album, it was cool to hear some of the background of the release (first album for Warner Bros and trying out lots of new sounds).

Some great songs on here, just not quite enough of them for five stars.

Ahhhh I can see why REM are so well loved now compared to after hearing previous records! This is a lot better than Out of Time imo, and probably better than Automatic for the People for me. It’s still undeinably REM but they sound a bit more agitated, a bit dirtier and less polished which suits them. I cant really describe it, this is just more interesting than other REM Ive heard. The melodies work better, and the guitars dont sound so perfect and plastic. Maybe authentic is a better word. I’m still not massive of Snipe’s vocals but that’s not a jip on his ability. He’s clearly unique and great I just cant quite warm to it. Regardless, I’ll be back to this

Enjoyed this more than the last REM album, prefer the slightly rocky/indier sound and orange crush and stand are top notch. Mad that this is their sixth album and was released in 1988, they've been around bloody ages. Maybe their debut is hardcore punk and they've progressively mellowed over time. REM will never be my favourite band but their best stuff is always welcome on a playlist and this album is a lot of their best.

I'm still an Out of Time man (not yet listened to Automatic for the People from a few weeks ago). I think it is decent enough but so forgettable. None of the arrangements stood out in the same way Man on the Moon does, for example. I am a little disappointed.

Thought this was okay, had some catchy songs and but most I found fairly dull. Stand is the best track on the album and I'll be adding that to some of my playlists. Highlights: Pop Song 89 Stand Orange Crush

Not heard this album before, but know the hits..... Similar sound to automatic here, which I like! Hard to say that it's not just as good as automatic, perhaps even more of a complete album, just lacking some real big hitters imo. Stand is the best track. Orange crush is good too. I'm a bit puzzled what to write about this. I *want* to like R.E.M. I didn't really like them at the time but Pavement were influenced by them and... I like mandolins and they seem to have some good tunes. I really like "stand" on this album. But I find Michael Stipe's voice a bit annoying and all the songs are a bit maudlin. I don't know. I just can't gel with them and I don't know why.

Think this is the album just before they got really big with Out of Time…. Enjoyed.

In short, this album is amazing. Some songs will definitely grow on me if I listen to the album more, and it’s a nice display of alternative music that isn’t afraid to show its true colors. It’s political, as seen with “Orange Crush”, heartbreaking, as seen with “The Wrong Child”, and creepy, as seen with “Stand”. There’s a lot more to it, but it is genuinely one of the best alt rock albums out there, and it deserves a 4.36/5. Fav: “The Wrong Child”, “You Are The Everything” Least Fav: “Orange Crush”

Side A show cased much of what I like about 80s REM. Energetic, intricate creative pop. Side B showcased much of what i don’t like about 90s REM overdramatic and irritating. Hairshirt may have single handedly moved this from a 4 to a 3

Yay, REM. I can just chill. I used to think this was the best REM album, until I realised it was Life's Rich Pageant / Murmur / Reckoning depending on what day it is. It's definitely 2nd/3rd/4th best though. I think it was pitched perfectly for young me, mostly pop but complex enough, and the odd 'difficult' song I could initially dislike but grow to love with the force of a thousand suns (the wrong child) Get Up, Untitled, World Leader Pretend, You Are the Everything, Hairshirt, these are perfect songs.

I appreciate how this album is still listenable.

Pretty smooth

Upon first listen, it’s a solid pop rock album, it’s just not completely my cup of tea. A few songs made it to my liked songs on Spotify such as Orange Crush and I Remember California. But it’s your typical R.E.M. album. With that being said, probably not an album I’ll ever listen to all the way through again. But I did enjoy a few of the tracks!

Not bad

Absolute classic. I don’t think there is value comparing Document, life’s rich patent and automatic for the people, each are classics. It often just depends on at what point you discovered REM. For me I’d heard document and saw them live. But the album I bought was Green. Truly transformative. Love everything they’ve ever done. Right up to the end they produced classic contemporary and challenging music. Green is a proper album. Nothing out of place and every track worth another listen. Head and shoulders above most of this 1001 journey. All topped off with an iconic cover.

8/10 yeah R.E.M. is one of those bands that never really surprises me with anything super special, but still deliver pretty nice, consistently enjoyable stuff

Possibly R.E.M.'s best album

By the time Green was released in 1988, I was already starting to lose interest in R.E.M. The previous record, Document wasn't up to the standard of the earlier records and with Green, the band signed to a major label (Warner Bros.) and their sound was evolving into a mid-tempo, commercial sounding, MTV pandering machine. I didn't like the album, nor it's following two, which I found close to "sell-out" territory. Listening now, I acknowledge the album has it's moments, it's a solid collection of songs that are recognizable and not bad, but still doesn't have the originality and impact (to me) of the early "indie" albums. The record is good, but definitely not one of my favourite's from the band, who I consider myself a big fan..

Meh. I can do one or two REM songs, but not a whole album

I'm pretty familiar with other REM albums, but this one not so much. I liked a few of the songs: Pop Song 89, Orange Crush, and Hairshirt. Stand is a good song but overplayed. The rest is meh. This leaves me between a 3 and a 4, but I'll round up.

REM was always one of those bands that I generally enjoyed when they made it to the radio & later MTV (Stand, Losing My Religion....tho Shiny Happy People is best forgotten) but somehow never made an effort to, in the era of tapes then CDs, actually own & listen to. Glad to be exposed to this, baby alternative before alternative was really a thing. Stipe's voice is great, and the songs are that genre blend that came to define most of the 90s & beyond - twangy rocking folky melodic. Very few misses & the gems (Pop Song 89, Orange Crush) really shine.

I mean, I get how influential this was, and props for its “different” sound back in the dreadful 80’s but, like, do people who claims this is the best they’ve ever heard stop listening to music in 88? Is this another “you had to be there” kind of record on the list? Well sorry, I had just turned 2 when this came out and I just don’t get the hype.

I don't listen to REM enough. Stand and Orange Crush are two of my all time favorite songs. I truly appreciate Stipe, but at times his vocals are a little to whiny.

Omg STAND hahaha i didnt know anything about REM but i recognize this song for sure. Theres like some fun stuff and some interesting stuff but i think the lead singer's voice is a little annoying actually.

This will be a grower. It seems to be the way with this band. The singles have an immediate connection. There are none that standout but it is solid fayre throughout.

Compared to Automatic for the People, the highs aren't as high, but the lows aren't as low. Orange Crush is the best song if you make it that far. Props for the environmentalist message too. 🌱🌱

R.E.M. just churned out classic albums. Which one is the best is certainly up for debate, but this one is right there. "Orange Crush," "Stand," "Pop Song 89" ... what more do you want?

This album reminded me of why I'm not much of an REM fan. I think it's just personal preference. I liked "Automatic for the People" much more.

Not sure if this is quite up to a 4 star rating but it’s def more than a 3 star. The problem is other than Pop Song, Stand and Orange Crush, most of these songs are mediocre. There’s a trend with REM, especially on earlier albums where Michael Stipe’s vocal melodies don’t quite fit the song melodies. He always seems to throw in an extra syllable or two. That happens a lot on this album. Ultimately I’m giving it a 3 because it’s not as good as other REM albums. I would give it 3.5 if half stars were possible.

I listened to murmur about a month ago through 1001 and loved it (I gave it a 4, but I would have changed it to a 5 long ago if I could) so I have high expectations. Pop song 89 is very good. This kind of music is one of my favorites, and it is executed brilliantly here. Get up is very good but not as good as the previous track. This one sounds a little more like murmur to me. You are the everything is also very good. I love accordions in music (probably because of my love of They Might be Giants) so I welcomed them here with open arms. Stand! Oh my goodness! I know this song! I had no idea this was an R.E.M song. It’s very good as well. World leader pretend is another excellent song. Not much to say about this song other than the fact that it’s really good. The wrong child is really good. Orange crush is also really good. Turn you inside out is one of my favorites so far. Very good. I think I might be an R.E.M fan… Hairshirt is really good. I have so little to say about this album, even though I’m absolutely loving it. I will say that the lead singer has a great voice which is shown off very well here. I remember California is another excellent song. This album has the perfect amount of diversity where no two songs sound too much alike but it’s similar enough that the album doesn’t sound disconnected. Lastly, untitled. I always thought not naming songs is kind of dumb, but I’ll excuse it because of just how good this song is. This is another absolutely incredible song. Overall very very good. It’s around the same quality as murmur I think.

Eclectic mix of rock & acoustic elements. Evokes a strong sense of nostalgia. Pacing can feel a bit monotonous.

Another great album

Listening to this album prompted me to do something I’d not done before—listen to their first eight albums in the order they were released. Glad I did. While Green wasn’t my fav album, it gave me a better understanding of their intentions to keep changing and staying creative and challenged by their music. (Loved how they swapped instruments. Thanks for the Wiki link btw, it always helps.) They had great staying power and really tried hard to keep their music fresh. Didn’t realize they’d been around since 1980. Impressive volume of work. Gotta love this band and the artistry behind their music.

Really enjoyed that trip down memory lane. This album always felt like the start of REM chapter 2 for me. There’s some gems that remind me of chapter 1, but then there’s Pop Song 89, Stand and Orange Crush that definitely lead the way into the new phase, which wasn’t my favorite.

A classic 80s/90s band. Personally, the lead singers voice has just been a bit nasally and whiny for my taste, but the tunes are catchy. I couldn't listen to this very often. 6/10

Some albums are slow growers. For me, this is one of those. I bought this album shortly after release, but it was never an instant favourite. However it has grown on me over the years.

I’ve never really given REM a fair listen. I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Some solid indie rock. I was very shocked to see that it was from the 80s. They obviously had a big influence on many alternative and indie bands that would come in the 90s

I'm not a fan of REM, bar one or two of their more catchy hits, I found this album to be completely 'on brand' for them i.e. a couple of toe-tapping hits and the remainder a load of fairly indistinguishable, up-your-own-arse, tosh.

Couple of Classics on this Album.

A great alt-rock record that which laid a lot of groundwork for the 90s. Michael Stipes sounds super confident, and the band overall is self-assured. The political elements land in the lyrics, with hooky rock music. Not my favorite R.E.M. record, but a big breakout and important album.

I love this album; this was the tour I saw R.E.M. on. Superb song-writing and interplay between the four members of the band. Possibly my favourite album by the band.

I wish I could like REM more but I cannot get past Michael Stipe's voice. It grates. It's uni-tonal. It's atonal. "Stand" is a fun song. "Orange Crush" has moments. But almost everything else seems like whiny college navel-gazing.

Stand is one of REMs best songs. I didn't enjoy this as much as the other albums, but it's still some great music.

I havent really like any REM album I've heard yet, but this is fine. I can at least appreciate the sound they are producing given the era it came out, much better than a lot of popular music in the mid to late 80s, I'm guessing they are so well regarded because they were early pioneers/influences for 90s alternative. 3.2.

R.E.M. is a classic for me forever. Several songs on Green take me to very specific memories.

This is a good album. Considering a 5, though that may be unfair to my other fives that hit deeper into my music oblongata. I've underrated this album in my collection, leaning toward Document, Eponymous, and Life's Rich Pageant.

I love R.E.M. but am not a big fan of this album. With this effort the band moved further away from the innovative sound that made their reputation and inspired a whole new generation of alternative bands. This record is largely mainstream pop and, while it was much more commercially successful, to me it represents a step backwards. Go listen to Reckoning or Fables Of The Reconstruction.

This REM album didn’t seem that bad. I’m not the biggest fan of their music but this one was somewhat enjoyable. They had a good mix of styles on this album compared to the previous ones I’ve heard where it was much more melodic. This felt more alternative which is what I prefer. Not sure how much I’d revisit this but it’s alright. 6.1/10

Certainly remember 2 cuts from this album, Stand & Orange Crust. They were among a few I liked of the entire list of songs. I would likely be more objective if the music videos weren’t rolling while listening. Will see about avoiding them in the future. Did appreciate their ability to vocalize clearly.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed listening to this album. Made me see that R.E.M goes beyond "Shiny happy people". It is a deep album with some great songs. It is still not my favorite kind of music, but I enjoyed a lot. 4/5

I had this when it came out and fell in love with the sound - one of the gateway albums into the indie/alternative scene for me. Discovered their back catalog, saw them on the Green tour (30+ songs on the set, support from Hoodoo Gurus and Go Betweens), and then saw them transform from an Indie darling to stadium filler. As for this actual album - it certainly sounds 90s not 80s, and I suppose that indicates how much influence REM had on the shape of 90s alternative rock. Michael Stipe is a big part in this - vocal stylings as well as his public persona were like nothing else at the time. But it's not just about him - as a band they had changed their sound from simplistic guitar noodlings to a garage band that knew their chops. Mandolin was a strange addition but it works here. The way the bass and the guitar work together on all-time banger Orange Crush is fantastic, and the drums just drive everything along. Great to listen to this one again.

It's ok. Mostly only the hits are good on here plus a couple of songs. Not my jam.

Nothing stands out very much with this album, and while I can appreciate it probably was potentially inspirational to the future of alt-rock music, it seems so bland and non-provoking that I would not listen to it again, and will likely not think of it again. 1/5 or 21/100.

Overall I didnt find it too much of a chore to listen to this album. I expected nothing more or nothing else and that’s exactly what I received. Didn’t find the mandolin on a few of the tracks was needed whatsoever. It’s a little like ordering an orange juice with bits of pulp. The little added extra bits won’t make the taste anymore refreshing with or without them. A little pointless. Highlights:- Stand Orange Crush

Listened to this while playing ISS Vanguard. I completed all my missions successfully! I never listened to R.E.M. growing up, but of course I had heard Stand before. My partner was singing along to a lot of the album. Another album that just oozes the 90s vibes. Nothing super remarkable.

Surprise of an album, I was expecting this to be much more lackluster, but it actually was pretty potent.

Love REM! Green has some great tunes but still like the older stuff even better

Not my favorite REM album, but some of the songs beyond the singles were better than I remembered.

Owned this on CD when it came out. One of the first ones I bought. Still like it.

Had a 9/10 listening experience bc I was sat down w an absolutely gorgeous view of a lake w a bunch of cows infront of me and I did absolutely nothing else so I felt very in tune w nature. -1 because my brother and dad slightly disturbed me. Idk if any of yall seen a cow get up from sleeping and do a lil stretch but it’s SUPER cute. Esp baby cows. Kinda crazy how long they are able to sit still and stand still. Feel like i don’t see cows not eating very often so it was cool to see them chilling.

7/10 - I liked some of the songs but they felt repetitive after a bit.

Interesting to hear that the band viewed this as an R.E.M album "without any R.E.M." songs. I'll need to listen to another to compare, but I can see how this was so influential to the alt rock movement with ease. Favorite Track: Turn You Inside-Out

I have to admit, R.E.M. is one of the more popular bands I find to be pretty dull. But this album was a bit more hit than miss, I enjoyed it a bit more than listens of other albums. Maybe I'm growing more fond of them, or maybe this record is a nit more concise, but I was pretty impressed! Standouts: Get Up, Stand, World Leader Pretend, Orange Crush, Turn You Inside-Out, Hairshirt, I Remember California, 7,5 out of 10

Initially was reluctant to listen to this one bc “I know what REM sounds like”. Glad I chose to ignore that thought and make myself listen to it. What a treat it was. A little cheesy at some parts, it makes up for it in just plain fucking heart. I love the singer’s vocals on the last track especially. This is another album that’s giving me winter SAD and anti-sad vibes (like the song standing). It gave me some energy and some light on this dreary day so I’ll give it a solid 6.5/10

This was a new sound for REM. I like the old sound but also like this one. There are enough monster songs to get to a 4.

A solid album. Well written power pop songs with the occasional mandolin or accordian thrown in. There is very little filler here and, although I'm not an aficionado, I would say the band is at their peak.
