Pretty good. Just can’t get into rem as much as people say I should.

Some really good music that holds up. Love the instrumentation. Lyrics still stick with me. Orange Crush and Inside out.

Green is a fabulous album. Stand is probably the truly standout track, but the whole album is full of bops. Just an awesome straight up rock album.

This was a very popular album when I was in college. Almost everyone I knew had it and played it. While I definitely was aware of their hit songs before this album, this was really when I started to be more aware and be a fan of R.E.M. as a band. I'm quite fond of this one.

Wait, stop me if you have heard this before…I’m not really an R.E.M fan in the sense that I have no familiarity with their albums as a whole. This one was a good one.

This is perhaps the only R.E.M. album I knew when it was current. I had it on a cassette tape with The Smithereens' Green Thoughts on the other side. I listened to it a lot on my walkman. Still love Pop Song 89 and Orange Crush. Great to hear it again today.

Document was my first R.E.M. love, but this was the album that solidified our relationship. Fantastic album that hit me right in the sweet spot and just the right time of my life. This sort of became the pivotal R.E.M. album for me, but I happily enjoyed their offerings before and after this.

It's not bad by any means but I'm starting to think you're not supposed to listen to these many REM songs back to back. Orange crush is a banger for sure but most songs sound like all the band members played their parts in separate rooms then put them together in post. Meh 4/10

I like R.E.M. It sounds like R.E.M. I really wanted to like this more than I did. It’s not that it’s not good, it’s kind of just ok. Some songs like “The Wrong Child” felt unorganized and crowded. “Orange Crush” is the best song on the album. The others are not even really close, no not “Stand” STFU. The majority of the songs really are just cluttered with overlapping singing and unnecessary extra sounds. Not the worst but there are better R.E.M. albums that could have been picked. 5/10

I adored this album in 1989. I haven't payed it much attention in the last 20 years. This was good to listen again with perspective. There is only one track I couldn't stand to listen to again. It's the song that got this album noticed. I think this is the transition album between classic REM and modern REM. Elements of the band's past and future are present. Still after all this time I believe this is a solid album throughout. Definitely putting it back in rotation.

I always thought REM were a one-hit-wonder band so I was surprised to see this isn't the Losing My Religion album. I had a good time listening to this!

I literally just listened to this album yesterday. It's probably my favorite by R.E.M. It's sort of their transition album, from less polished, murkier material to the more pop-sounding later years. It's a perfect blend. I think of this as their Revolver. I love the use of the mandolin. 5 stars.

Lighter more "pop" and catchy than earlier albums. Pretty good and not too long. Grows on you positively as a transition from low-key US indie band towards their commercial wonder years.

Only one I’d heard off of here was ‘Stand’ (one of my favorite R.E.M. songs) so I was elated to find an LP full of other great tracks. Appreciate that this album never dips into the dour or sappy tendencies the band has when the tempo slows down, things moved along quickly and the album flowed quite well.

good ol fashioned fun

Ya know R.E.M. feel heavily carried by their one massive hit per album. Orange Crush might be their worst massive hit and the rest of the album does nothing for me either

This came out when I was in high school. This was circulating around with my friends while my playlist was experimenting with hip hop, rap, and hard rock and metal. It was a nice visit down memory lane during my Junior year. Orange Crush and Stand are the two stars in this album.

One of my better liked REM albums. But I just can’t get them up over 3 stars. Good band almost great at times , but in the end. Solid 3 stars

It's more of an iteration on Document than the giant leap forward on the previous album, but remains a great poppy indie album that has at least three of four songs that would be career best for other bands.

I've enjoyed a few REM albums from here, so I was disappointed to be disappointed in this. Felt like they had ran out of ideas a bit, which is strange as some of their later album were then pretty good again.

8/10. I think this was my favorite REM album so far, always like to think about Orange Crush

I think this album is where I finally understood how to interpret REM’s music. They’re not some alt rock band that randomly got popular, they’re just a pop group for Gen X. 5/10

It was REM’s first mainstream album and damn - what a banger. If the second half had been all that the first half was, this would clearly be a 5 star disc. I feel like I’m splitting hairs but I’m docking a star for REM selling out. Fair? No. Who cares? You?!

Honestly, i’m such a big fan of every REM album but this one. I felt i kinda had to push my way through it. I honestly don’t know if i could even choose a favorite from this album. was not the vibe. Any other album i would have absolutely loved.

This is the R.E.M. album I own, bought years back to try to shift my dial from apathy and academic admiration on them, which failed then and today. I suspect the big ‘90s records, when they come to us, may boot me out of this. These songs are fine, well-wrought and personal, just not on my frequency, Kenneth.

Don't listen to this as much as some other REM albums, perhaps because I have to be on alert to skip "Stand". Has a few of my favorites esp. "You Are The Everything" and "Orange Crush". A bit more mainstream than earlier ones, as is well-documented, but Green is really quite inventive for the late '80s. Good arrangements, indeed. Not enough for full marks, but solid.

Good, not the best REM album though

I discovered REM back in early 1983 when Murmur was fresh and new. And exciting and different. I saw them live in October 1983, one of the top 5 shows I’ve seen. And I was a huge fan of their first 4.5 albums (including the Chronic Town EP). But I never really latched on to Document and the subsequent albums, perhaps because I became a father and refocused. And perhaps because they shifted their style, and got really popular. I know (and own) the “hits” from this album, and they’re certainly worthy, so I was happy when this came up on the generator. Overall it’s a good album, though I still prefer the earlier sound when the vocals were unintelligible (and often incomprehensible) and the band seemed less political. The fact that they planned the album release for the same day as the US presidential election doesn’t impress me. Stick to music guys. The 4x singles are really good, the rest of it is just OK. I went into this expecting at least 3.5, probably rounding to 4. But I just can’t get that high, this is below all the other REM albums I own. A kind of disappointing 3/5

A few standout tracks but somewhat uneven as they explore new sounds. Odd how Stone Temple Pilots chose Orange Crush as the track to call out selling out on Big Bang Bang given this album includes Stand which eventually gave us Shiny Happy People. Not their best, the mandolin doesn't do it for me.

Great album. Acoustic guitar is very well recorded. Lots of great political songs. 4 stars.

I really enjoy REM's sound. Just great to listen to.

This album feels like it is what rock and roll is supposed to be. Drums, lead/bass guitar, and solid vocals to lead the way. There are a million and one variations on rock and roll but R.E.M. really feels authentic to the way it is supposed to sound like. I found myself really liking some of the bigger hits from this record in Orange Crush and even moreso, Stand. That being said there were times listening to Green where the music seemed to kind of fade to the background. As if it's almost too cookie cutter, too plain. As a whole it was a solid listen.

This is my 9th or 10th favorite REM album, which speaks more to the greatness of REM than it does Green. If I were to list essential REM albums to new blood, I probably wouldn't even include this one. It sounds like I'm shitting on this album, but frankly I love it. There may be better REM, but Green is still a great album. It would serve as many other artists best album. No one did "Side 1, Track 1" better than REM, and Pop Song 89 continues that streak. This is clearly a band looking for a way to grow beyond Murmur and Reckoning. They'd finally find that on "Automatic For The People". But Green has some bangers, mainly the songs you may not be familiar with. Plus this album gave Chris Elliott the theme song for his short lived television series "Get A Life". That's a benefit in anyone's book, so much so I'm almost ashamed to rate this anything less than a 5.

A lot of this is not pleasant to my ears. Sometimes I find R.E.M. to be a bit monotonous with Stipe’s unwavering voice and pretty unimpressive instrumentals. Orange Crush stands out.

R.E.M.'s weakest album so far. At this point, R.E.M. has long left behind the moody post-punk of methodical jangle guitar and kudzu-thick mumbled lyrics in favour of clean, anthemic alt-pop. After their previous record "Document" had already given us two great pop classics in "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" and "The One I Love", R.E.M. seemed poised to lead the alternative revolution into the mainstream, to become the American Smiths. And thus, Green is... fine. Just fine. In opener 'Pop Song 89', Michael Stipe suddenly finds himselves in the rung of the famous, asking around for help on how he should be a pop star: should he sing about frivolous stuff, or should he use fame as a platform to speak up, only getting tepid 'ayes' in response. Unfortunately, it's the unintended thesis of the album: you're getting both politically engaged songs and frivolous pop, but neither is executed in a passionate and memorable way. Stand is the sell-outy, child friendly pop single of the album, and it doesn't work as Michael Stipe is bad at sounding like he cares about kids stuff, sounding more like he is distant. Say what you will about 'Shiny Happy People', but at least his tone works for that songs. He certainly doesn't sound happy in 'Stand' 'Orange Crush' is the anti-war song and while it sounds good and my favourite cut from this album, it feels like there is something missing. The chorus and verse neatly follow to each other without modulating too much in the process, and without Mike Mills' dependable backing 'oooohhhs' in the chorus, it would probably be as forgettable as all the other songs on the album. It's just weird that, despite having two albums before that sound just like this one, "R.E.M. puts on the big anthemic pants without losing that thick Southern mood and queer/left-wing ethos" this one is downright forgettable. Perhaps it is forgettable because it is too much like those previous albums. R.E.M. may have become more popular with this formula, but it was apparant some change was needed in order to stay sustainable. And luckily, it would come; R.E.M. hasn't even reached 'Losing My Religion' yet. But for this album, it's unfortunately too late.

Another one I loved as a teenager. I still like most of the songs - they are kind of strange and corny, like the best REM. Doesn't hit as hard today.

An overall great sound and album. I have always enjoyed R.E.M. This was a good experience to hear some of their other songs and reconnect with ones I had forgotten about. There are some very strange ones on this album that make it a lower 4/higher 3. Just some random lyrics.

Green flies or dies on its nasality. That part of R.E.M.'s foregrounded as melodies tease the better-known work and lyrics call back to 90s politics (which to be fair were in the future on release, but I own the mistakenness). It very much works for me, but with the retreat of rock and roll the band's sound is, for better or worse, rather naked.

When they're good, they're very good. The rest of the time they sound as flat as Stipe's voice. I like them better now that I did when they were all over the airwaves. "Stand" and "Pop Song" are the standouts. "Get Up" had a nice hook to it. I never liked "Orange Crush", and never will. And so it goes....

I love R.E.M but this isn't their best.

i like REM a lot, but this is not my favorite album by them. it's not bad by any stretch, I just think it doesn't quite get there for me. the quality of the songwriting is there, the instrumentation is as good as ever, it's just that for some reason, the total is slightly less than the sum of the parts.

It's a solid album but, having listened to two REM albums as a part of this 1001 Albums malarky, I'd say they are very easy listening, somehwat unremarkable. Michael Stype's voice is certainly unique and I enjoy it, but the overall dynamic is somewhat limited. I prefer what I've heard form their mid-90s material (Automatic for the People(?).. whatever that mega popular album was with Night Swimming on it.

Stand will always make me think of Ben Wyatt's claymation in Parks and Rec, and for that reason alone, this album is brilliant. As it goes, it's really pretty good anyway. Stipe is one of those people who has effectively got two great voices - one for the fast numbers and one for the slow ones. That's impressive.

A very poppy album for R.E.M. with hits like Stand and Pop Song 89. I've definitely heard a lot of the songs on this album before, but none have stuck. Personally, I prefer their earlier less poppy work, but if a pop rock album was what they were going for they nailed it.

It’s good! Each song sounds pretty similar in my opinion. Stand sounds different! I also know it though. The song, The Wrong Child, sounds like it is being sung by Trump. I like the guitar in Orange Crush. Hairshirt is also sung by Trump. Ditto for I Remember California. Same for Untitled.

This was an amazing blast from the past! I don’t think it’s their best album, as I’m partial to their later work, but it’s definitely a classic and an important album for the music we were to hear in the 90s.

This was my first REM album. And for a long time, my favorite. Had it on cassette, of course. Got it from the BMG music group (11 for the price of 1! Plus shipping of course).

Decent album, I may warm up to it on further listenings but not many songs beyond the singles (Pop Song 89, Stand, and Orange Crush) stand out for me.

Meh. I liked some of the songs that changed up the instrumentation with mandolin or lap steel a little more than the rest, but overall this album kind of fell flat. I remember liking the song "Stand" as a kid, but hearing it for the first time in maybe decades it's just the blandest song ever. Nothing on here I actively disliked necessarily, so I guess it's a 2.5/5.

Quite good, although I never felt that this was one of most essential R.E.M. albums for whatever reason. That still kind of rings true but it’s a classic. B+

Pretty great album with some really strong singles. I felt it was brought down by equally boring songs that I couldn't get into. They were definitely ahead of their time, but it falls flat by modern standards.

This annoyed me and I don't know why. Maybe I was expecting too much, maybe it's the blandness of this album. For me, R.E.M. works with dark and sad themes and atmosphere. I really like "Losing My Religion", "Fire", and their album "Automatic for the People". "Green" on the other hand tries hard to be "green". To be a feel-good alt-rock piece. It's mostly major key, instead of minor. It didn't work for me, but again, maybe it's just me and my irrational disgust against feel-good alt rock stuff. They feel like corporate rock; "live, laugh, love" in the form of guitar riffs and upbeat lyrics.

I was genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed this album. It's difficult to appreciate music that inspired so many other artists you enjoy, because it feels like you've heard their sound already. This wasn't the case for this album, since sonically it is so well put-together.

REM are an odd group but good.

3.5 - “Your feet are going to be on the ground/ Your head is there to move you around.” Such a wonderfully quirky, life-affirming line. It’s the only one I’d keep of this 45 minutes of music.

Pretty standard rock music. They definitely picked the right song from the album to be a hit, Stand is a bop. Can’t imagine picking to listen to this in 1988 over all the other stuff coming out.

An enjoyable listen! While I only recognized Stand, the album had this sense of nostalgia about it that reminded me of bands of this style I used to listen to when I was younger like Fastball (so underrated). Pop Song 89 was the standout for me, and the first save I've had for a number of albums now.

Honestly, overall, this album is meh. I think automatic for the people is a lot better. Maybe, this was more relevant for people when it came out. Who knows? The wrong child was a moving/haunting song but the rest of them are either boring and the lyrics hidden behind obscurity. I won't be listening to this album again. I guess orange crush was okay but again, not going out of my way to listen to this album

Eclectic poppy REM. Pretty solid overall. Led me to do some research, I didn't really realize that REM was basically the first alternative rock band that inspired others like Nirvana.

It sure is R.E.M. Not bad, but not amazing or anything. There's good parts, but sometimes it's boring. My favourite song was Orange Crush.

Great instrumentals especially on the drums and guitars. Overall, great feel-good music with self-reflective vocals/lyrics. The album suffers from a few songs that seem out of place with slower instrumentals.

Weird in an interesting way, but I couldn't get into the singers voice/ range

REM signed with Warner. This marked the turning point of the darling of the indie scene, the poster children for IRS Records, going mainstream. It's a bold album, far more political than I thought they could have gotten away with on their major label debut. It's strange and moving in places, straight ahead rock in others. An excellent example of REM's talent, but Green isn't their strongest work. IRS REM has far better work, as does post-Warner. They survived their growing pains, however. REM was full of talent. They were constantly moving forward. A good album, but for me, it falls short of greatness.

I listened to this during high school. I don't think many my age did. A few classic memories on this one for me.

There's some fabulous tracks on here, not all of them, but plenty.

It was a good album. I know several songs. The album was a good length and I did not feel that any of the songs carried on for too long. The album is better than a 3 but not really a 4 but I will round up.

Probably my second-favorite REM album. 4 stars.

R.E.M was never my thing outside of the most popular songs (Orange Crush included which is on this album and it’s a great song). I don’t particularly care for the sound or vocals much, so this is miss in my personal opinion.

I did not appreciate how much Interpol sounds like REM until this listen. Good album but it's a very specific mood.

As soon as this started I was like: “Good, R.E.M, they’re decent aren’t they? Sounds like an easy 4”. And it just couldn’t quite live up to this modest expectation. By the end I was bored and everything felt a little “down” somehow. I’d like to like them but I’m just not a fan.

Man this album is a total time capsule. REM is such an odd band sonically, so its just lodged in my brain that their sound has this time period stuck to it. Nothing really got out of second gear for me, sorry REM.

Every time I hit an R.E.M. album I end up spending the entire day listening to them. Such an amazing band. This record only produced 1 or 2 hits but the whole thing is great.

Riding off the success of Document, this is their most experimental release, with songs instead toward a more accessible form of alt rock that's happier but just as janglier. Just like Document, the production is phenomenal and the vocals are clear, making for some really catchy tunes. It's an entertaining listen. The songs are pretty good, and a few could be ranked among the best in their discography, but most of them just gave me the impression of "wow that sounds pretty cool / pleasant" and not much more, especially the second half.

This is a favourite of mine from the early 90s. I like it more than Out of Time. Weird themes and great sounds.

The vocals dominate in a way that makes me feel like most songs are similar, his voice is just so powerful. But it's a really chill listen that I enjoyed still.

Again some surprisingly good songs! R.E.M. has a lot to offer!

A blast from late high school early college! The sound is so unique and distinctive and transportive to a particular time and place. Stipe’s nasal tonality is best in small doses so I will continue to enjoy this band that way!

There’s some really good stuff on here - the singles are all fun and I Remember California is a great deeper cut, but on the whole it is a dip in quality from the fantastic five album run that precedes it

"Green" finds R.E.M. in a transitional period, between the slightly more pop/folk direction they'd pursue, and the college rock past they had just come from. As a fan, it's not my favorite records, but there are some worse. I'm also just a sucker for Michael Stipe's lyrics and deadpan delivery. Call it a 3.5, bumped due to prior bias. Favorite tracks: "Pop Song 89", "You Are The Everything", "Orange Crush"

Should we talk about the weather? Should we talk about the government? No, I think we should talk about this album by R.E.M. Green was my introduction to this band so I'm not going to lie, I'm flat out biased. Over time it doesn't always hold the number one spot in my heart when it comes to their records, but it does occasionally claim the throne. As an aside, we are all, always, allowed to change our minds when it comes to matters of taste; and music is certainly within the domain of taste-based conversation. Mike Mills, the not-so-secret weapon of the band, is a revelation on this record. When I hear him sing his backing lines like "Get up, Get up" or "Freedom" the hair on the back of my neck and arms stands up as I get the feels. His contributions always bring an additional emotional layer as well as rounding out the sound. Songs like You Are Everything are necessary precursors to later hits a la Losing My Religion, and yet they are themselves affecting touchstones of a time in our lives when we held someone as absolutely essential to our being and being in the world. Let's not forget that this album moves effortlessly between such emotional songs and uptempo pop. We get a dose of the pop as the opener does what it says on the tin. Later we shift into it with Stand, which, pardon the pun, Stands out in that category. Hey, just another aside, as we're free-associating on this record: It was R.E.M.'s Stand and the Pixies Here Comes Your Man that were in serious rotation on MTV together and both secretly sneaking in more twangy guitar than I would've otherwise consented to. In retrospect it makes sense that we'd see a rise in indie-country sounds in the wake of that much play. World Leader Pretend, Orange Crush, Turn You Inside Out, I Remember California...I mean c'mon, every song deserves its own exegesis uncovering the influences, drawing connections and otherwise celebrating the craft of songwriting. But I only have a few minutes to write this review and I'd rather be listening to this great record than typing.

Inching towards 5 stars - the first half of the album is sublime, and the run of songs from You Are The Everything through to World Leader Pretend is god tier. But the second half of the album never quite holds my attention. Still an all time classic.

Classic REM album I already knew. Pretty much what I expected.

"Stand" and "Orange Crush" are personal favorites, but the rest of the album doesn't clear the bar they set. Still, R.E.M. is pretty solid background music.

It turns out I like R.E.M. more than I thought. Solid album, although Stand has to be one of the most annoying songs. My favorite song, Orange Crush, still has that special something after all these years. I don't think I could listen to hours of this band, but I could certainly listen here & there when the mood strikes.

Transition album, from “I can’t understand what he’s saying” to “I can understand him but I don’t know what he means.” Great album though, with a few of my favorites from them, especially Orange Crush and the beautifully dreamy You Are the Everything.

I get why it’s here but it’s just sort of boring and I find the vocals flat. Given how huge they were, I probably would’ve killed myself by 1994

REM is a band it always seems like I should like more than I do. Something about Michael stripes voice just doesn’t do it for me, makes all their songs sound so dad-rocky to me

The first half of this album has a playful sense of humor. I really like the opening track “Pop Song 89.” The second half rocks a little more. “Orange Crush” is excellent. And the closing track, “Untitled,” is beautiful. I love the layered backing vocals. R.E.M. are great at writing pop songs but they do it with their own distinct style. Lyrics are excellent too.

I can't seriously listen to "Stand" without thinking of the great Parks and Recreation episode where they play it over and over through a malfunctioning PA system. It's a good R.E.M. record. I can't help but compare it to "Automatic For the People" and "Out Of Time" which I think are better albums. I noticed that the latter hasn't popped up yet even though it has their most popular song, "Losing My Religion". If this is on this list then I can't imagine that album not being on this list. I like the band but it feels like just a little bit of a lot of R.E.M. I hate that one idea of "ok, is every record by this band going to be on this list? Is that maybe a little too much?" is pervading my review, but I can't help it. Besides that, the record is good and solid. Nice 3/5.

3/5. Solid album with a few good tunes. Heard some deep tracks I had never heard that I liked. I thought the singer was really on his game during this record.

I think I said on a prior albums on this list, REM for me peaked around Life's Rich Pageant, and though I listened to this and Document a lot when they came out, they wore out for me. REM doing its REM thing that it pretty much did for the duration, until it stopped.

So to begging with, the first track: pop song 89, look way too much like hello i love by the Doors. there is good songs but nothing really impress me, like not at the same level as other alt band of the times, but its a very impression like its not a bad album

I always feel like I should listen to and be more familiar with R.E.M. than I am, which is currently very very little, but whenever I do I just kind of feel "meh" about them. This is my second album of theirs that has come up on this list, and I assume not the last, and I still just kind of feel that way about it. Not bad by any means but just kind of "meh" for sure.

Today's album is a golden one! R.E.M. are an alt rock/post punk band from the United States. In the 80's, these guys were trailblazers for the genre of alt rock. Interestingly, I reviewed a Husker Du album last week, and they were another trendsetter for the genre. R.E.M. made it big, Husker Du remained a cult favourite. Michael Stipe's strange cryptic lyrics blend seamlessly into the folkish musical accompaniment. Apparently this album was the first to include mandolin, making this one closer to folk rock than its predecessors. Stand, Orange Crush, and Pop Song 89 were all radio favourites, and are phenomenal songs. These alone are enough to warrant a 5 star rating. There isn't a dud on this record at all. Overall, an amazing rock record. I've listened to it many times before, and will continue to. I've had R.E.M. on shuffle all day now! R.E.M. has long been one of my favorite bands. I had this album along with all of their first decade or so of releases. This album is fantastic. They are always such interesting and thought-provoking writers, composers, and performers. And they have that rare wonderful quality that I happen to personally admire and value: they have their own signature sound and style. I can always tell when it's an R.E.M. song even when I haven't heard it before. I always appreciated and admired Peter Buck's guitar style, and now as an amateur beginner guitarist, I hear even more clearly his artistry. I love that he isn't one for big screaming solos. Nothing against those, they can be a lot of fun, but I have always loved how he composes and performs in such a way that his work is beautifully interwoven into their music, supports it seamlessly and brilliantly, and is definitely "his" work, yet it never overpowers the rest of the group. Rare and very, very cool. Michael Stipe's lyricism and vocal work is always great to my ears. And I think Mike Mills is superb. To me, he and Peter Buck should be mentioned more often in the discussions of rock "greats" but I get that because of they and their group's general approach to their craft, they don't really get the attention they deserve. Bill Berry always played great, too, and I was really sad when he had to leave the group for health reasons. Look at his contributions to the band as a writer, too. As with the others, there is more to him than meets the eye. So nice to hear this album once again -- thanks, 1001 Albums project!

This is clearly a pretty important transition point from early R.E.M. to 90s radio friendly R.E.M. Good for what it is, but it's no "Murmur."

I read that R.E.M. were learning about bubble gum pop songs from the 60s when they wrote some of these tracks, and it shows. A weird transition from their usual impenetrable lyrics to very simple and seemingly meaningless songs like "Stand". "Orange Crush" is still a top tune, though, so can't completely slam it.

Pretty perfect. The end of their second three-album cycle, moving from the janglemumble sound of the first three, to world-conquering titans. The first time I can really hear the mandolin in their work - crucial to the track that made them global megastars. There's another list song (I remember california), a dry run for a more straightforward acoustic ballad (Hairshirt) and a fistful of ironic powerpop songs (Stand, Orange Crush, Pop song). So, excellence as usual.

When I was a kid in 1990, a mere nine year old little shit, REM was one my favorite bands. I mean, I had never heard one of their albums and didn’t know their name, but I loved one of their songs. Truthfully, I didn’t even know that the song was theirs or that they were even an actual rock band. (If you’re over 40, you might know where I’m going with this…) The song was “Stand” and I only knew it because it was the theme song for my favorite television show, “Get a Life”. I don’t think I even knew REM was an actual, legitimate rock band until a few years later: I just figured the network just hired some random musicians to write a theme song for their brilliant sitcom starring Chris Elliot. For the uninitiated, Get a Life was a sitcom that aired on the burgeoning Fox network from 1990-1992. It starred Chris Elliot as 30 year old man-child who lived above his parent’s garage and was a paperboy (bicycle and all) for a living. The episodes were always off-beat and surreal with several of them ending with Chris Elliot’s character, Chris Peterson, dying. It was unlike anything on television at the time and for 9 year old me it was the perfect comedy: A live action slapstick cartoon. It’s still one of my favorite television shows ever and is at least partially responsible shaping my sense of humor through childhood and as an adult…a truly formative piece of art in my life. Here’s a brief synopsis of one of my favorite episodes, “Neptune 2000”, lifted from the internet: “When Chris was 12 he got a job as a paperboy so he could buy a submarine from the back of a comic book. Four to six hundred weeks later, when the kit arrives, Chris and his father put it together; however when they embark on the sub's maiden voyage (in Chris's bathtub) they become trapped.” Every time I’ve heard the opening organ riff from “Stand” over the last 33 years, I’ve thought about that episode or visualized the opening credits of the show where Chris gets distracted by an attractive lady in lingerie picking up her newspaper from her front lawn (it was Fox in the early 90’s, a scantily clad lady was practically a prerequisite) and crashes his bike into a parked car. Because of their association with “Get a Life”, REM will always get respect from me, even if I don’t like a lot of the music they released after this record. Green, clearly, is more than just “Stand”. It is a fantastic record and I’ve never really given it an in-depth, thorough listen until day. What a great record, it makes me realize that maybe I’ve been a little too harsh on REM over the years. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to watch some “Get a Life”. You should do the same…and while you’re at it, make sure you check out the TV show. Zing!

My least favorite songs were still listenable, which is more than I can say for some of the other albums I've heard through the 1000 albums generator. In general, I enjoy the type of pop-rock that R.E.M. does, so while this album wasn't the strongest I've heard from them, it's still pretty good.

alright alt rock album, with some grunge undercurrents

You can't really go wrong with any of the albums REM put out in the 80s. Green is probably my least favorite of that era, although it's still better than most albums that came out in '88. It's one of their most accessible of their earlier albums, and the band is solid as always. Graded on the curve of their own work though, this is a bit of a mixed bag. Most of the singles I can take or leave, but there are some excellent deep tracks worth listening to. High 3, rounded to a 4. Has anyone ever noticed that Fall On Me (I know, it's not on this album) sounds like he's saying "Banh Mi"? This is a fine album, but Life's Rich Pageant is more reflective of the band.

R.E.M. is one of my favorite bands though these my commercial aimed songs like Pop Song 89 and Stand push me away a bit. World Leader Pretend, Orange Crush, Turn You Inside-Out and You are the Everything are the strong songs on this album that i think fondly about. Much more introspective, with either the thoughtful tone of World Leader or the more aggressive energy of Orange Crush... both are done so well. Thoroughly enjoy this album, but the pop market aimed songs here don't age so well.
