19 years old when she released this, but 1989 hip hop doesn't age well.

I like the versatility and vulnerability of her voice, but I don't understand her music.

English Indie Rock that reminds me of Muse with driving rhythms and suspended chords and cool keyboards and heavy bass. Vocals is reminiscent of Brandon Flowers (The Killers).
The band only released three albums.

Four big hits on an eight track album.
'Highway Star', 'Smoke On The Water' (cool story), and 'Space Truckin''.
'Lazy' is a cool 12 bar blues with an awesome Hammond Organ intro.
The Flaming Lips
2/5
Indifferent;
Cool drum sounds;
"In the Morning of the Magicians" sounds like Neil Young's vocals.
De La Soul

The Go-Betweens

Most recognizable song is 'Strawberry Letter 23', which was later made famous with the Brothers Johnson release; this later version was used in two different Tarantino movies.

Three big radio hits: Enter Sandman and The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters.
Green Day

Uninspired follow-up to 'Rumors'.
20 tracks is too much, especially with so many underdeveloped tracks.
They sound like a garage band at times!
Heaven 17
2/5
This is the band that was created from 'Human League'.
Funky bass lines for a synth band.
3 of the 9 tracks are not available on Spotify.
2 good tracks: Penthouse and Pavement
Play to Win (sounds like Devo)
ABBA
4/5
Big hits:
Dancing Queen
Knowing Me, Knowing You
Money, Money, Money
Fernando,
and lesser known 'That's Me'.
All very well crafted songs, with great instrumentation, vocal arrangements, and chord changes.
John Martyn
3/5
You'll need the lyrics to understand his slurred singing.
Good songs!
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
I love Elvis' voice!
He writes unconventional songs, and this album grew on me for the 2nd listen.
No big radio hits from this album, but some good songs are:
Beyond Belief
The Long Honeymoon
Man Out of Time
The Loved Ones
Human Hands
Kid About It
The Cars
4/5
Debut album recorded in 1978!
First 3 tracks were big radio hits:
Good Times Roll
My Best Friend's Girl
Just What I Needed (by far the most listened to according to Spotify, June 2023, over 200 million plays)
Another decent hit:
You're All I've Got Tonight
Metallica
2/5
Not sure if a live album should be included in a top 1001 albums.
Neat concept: Heavy Metal meets Classical Orchestra, but not a big enough Metalicca fan to appreciate their songs as an arrangement.
Eminem
4/5
Uncomfortable listen at times, but some really good raps.
One skit and the last track "The Kids" not available on Spotify, and Spotify does not publish Eminem's lyrics!
Big hits:
Kill You
Stan
Who Knew
The Way I Am
The Real Slim Shady
R.E.M.
2/5
2 radio hits;
Stand
Orange Crush
Other decent song is .Hairshirt

Radiohead
4/5

Fred Neil
2/5
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
3/5
Inspired by Woody Guthrie, traditional folk country, good story telling. Simple music with just guitar and voice and the occasional harmonica.
Donovan
1/5
A 20 year old from Scotland, but only the title track is worthwhile. Trippy lyrics.
Miles Davis
5/5
Great balance; it wasn't all about Miles, which was refreshing. There were long sections where there was no trumpet at all, and other times when an instrument kicked in and you couldn't tell right away if it was Shorter on Soprano Sax or Davie on a high muted trumpet. Very cool effect.
Pearl Jam
4/5
Five big hits:
Once
Even Flow
Alive
Black
Jeremy.
This album came out after my first year of university.
Lauryn Hill
4/5
Favourite Tracks:
Doo Wop (That Thing)
I Used To Love Him (with Mary J. Blige)
Forgive Them Father
Everything Is Everything
Can't Take My Eyes of You (I Love You Baby)
Brian Eno
2/5
Effective studying music, and pretty cool that Eno coined the term 'ambient music'.
Skepta
2/5
British crime rap ain't my bag.
Don McLean
3/5
Seeing the album cover art, I started listening with a negative mindset, but I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It's pensive and thoughtful folk music for the most part. He dedicated the album to Buddy Holly, and the title track includes the line "the day the music died" which is how that 1959 tragedy is now known as.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
2/5
A Serbian playing Brazilian music!
Zzh zzh
Tom Waits
3/5
8th album from the prolific poet.
3/5
Big hits from 1995:
Wonderwall
Don't Look Back in Anger
Morning Glory
Champagne Supernova
Kanye West
2/5
Talented rapper, just not my jam.
Runaway is a hood song.
Megadeth
1/5
Hell no!
Queens of the Stone Age
2/5
Forgettable
3/5
Good vocal harmonies and excellent interplay of harmonica and saxophone in City, Country, City.
Throwing Muses
2/5
29 songs is too many for one album, but I wouldn't know because Spotify blocks 28 of those songs, leaving the listener to decide on a ranking based on one song "Hate My Way".
LL Cool J
3/5
Second half of this old school rap album is better than the first.
Good songs:
Farmers Blvd (outro "You don't stop" used in Beastie Boys' Sabotage)
Mama Said Knock You Out
Jingling Baby
To Da Break of Dawn
The Power of God
Stevie Wonder
3/5
Sleepy album for the most part, but good songs are:
Boogie On Reggae Woman,
You Haven't Done Nothing (pointing accusations at President Nixon), and
They Won't Go When I Go (sad gospel feel).
The Doors
3/5
Big hits:
Break On Through (to the other side);
Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar) (circus feel);
Light My Fire;
The End (featured in the intro of Apocalypse Now)
Waylon Jennings
3/5
Great voice
Rod Stewart
3/5
That's All Right (Arthur Crudup 1946, then Elvis Presley 1954), but Rod Stewart's version is barely recognizable, but very good rocking blues version. The last 2 minutes of this 6 minute recording us a beautiful version of Amazing Grace featuring the slide guitar.
Tomorrow is a Long Time is a Bob Dylan song, but Rod Stewart's version brings it to life, especially by adding the fiddle. This is the second song on this album that was previously recorded by Elvis Presley.
The 32 second classical guitar intro at the start of Maggie May is called "Henry". Maggie May features the mandolin.
I Know I'm Losing You is the first rocking song on this mostly folk album, but it is a remake of the 1966 Motown hit by the Temptations, which was turned into a funk rock song by Rare Earth in 1970.
Reason To Believe is another cover song, so other than Maggie May, all of my favourite songs on this album are covers.
Yes

Suede
3/5
Still Life is a cool song.
The album probably deserves a second listen.
Leonard Cohen
2/5
Everybody Knows
Take This Waltz (backup vocalist Jennifer Warnes).
Otherwise, synthesizer based album would sound better with real instruments.
AC/DC
2/5
All sounds the same after the title track.
Last album by Bon Scot
Thelonious Monk
3/5
Monk & Rollins 1957 - Hard Bop
Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are

3/5
Guitar Town has a recognizeable guitar melody
My Old Friend The Blues is a lovely ballad.
Overall a regular country twang album.
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
Dreams;
Never Going Back Again (great acoustic guitar sound, vocals and guitar all by Lindsey Buckingham
Don't Stop (Christine McVie)
Go Your Own Way
The Chain (great guitar sounds, including a Dobro, and has a fretless bass solo )
Gold Dust Woman (another great guitar sound - Dobro, and is about Stevie Nicks' cocaine addiction)
6 of the 11 tracks are very famous
Pixies
2/5
Fairport Convention
1/5
Do NOT like her voice.
Folk
Beck
4/5
Dreary album (after a breakup with his long term girlfriend), but it deserves a couple of listens to let or sink in.
Wiki: "the album features themes of heartbreak and desolation, solitude, and loneliness. For the album, much of Beck's trademark cryptic and ironic lyrics were replaced by simpler, more sincere lyrical content."
"Little One" has a Nirvana feel
Bert Jansch
2/5
Scottish folk singer and gifted guitar picker.
Running From Home
Angie (guitar only)
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Scarborough Fair / Canticle
Homeward Bound
The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy)
7 O'Clock News / Silent Night
Jack White
4/5
I didn't expect to like this album very much, but the whole album is keyboard heavy which adds a tone and texture I didn't know that Jack White used. Worth extra listenings.
Missing Pieces (cool keyboards)
Weep Themselves To Sleep
I'm Shakin'
Trash Tongue Talker
Hip Poor Boy
Guess I Should Go To Sleep
On and On and On
The Isley Brothers
2/5
Not fond of 18 track albums which includes alternate versions of the same songs, especially with the 3 biggest hits being covers!
That Lady (funk cover of their own 1964 song)
Listen To The Music (Doobie Brothers cover)
Summer Breeze (Seals & Crofts cover)
Def Leppard
2/5
Lots of radio hits, but other than "Pour Some Sugar On Me", I was never a fan of Def Leppard.
Dennis Wilson
4/5
Never heard of him, but quite a good album. Worth a 2nd listen
The Who
1/5
Ugh, why are live albums on this list?
Koffi Olomide
1/5
Nope
The Young Rascals
3/5
Sounds like happy go lucky band like the monkees, but with better musicians.
Groovin' is a classic.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
Normally not a fan of live albums, but this one makes sense since they needed an actual concert hall organ for part of it. Three incredible musicians!!!
Elliott Smith
3/5
Interesting chord changes throughout.
The Byrds
2/5
"Wild Mountain Thyme"
"Eight Miles High"
ZZ Top
3/5
Four big songs:

Got Me Under Pressure
Sharp Dressed Man
Legs.
I was 11 years old when this album came out, and I remember drawing that car in my art book.
Duke Ellington
3/5

The Chemical Brothers
2/5
Block Rockin' Beats
Dig Your Own Hole (workout music)
Setting Sun
Bill Evans Trio
3/5
Don't normally approve of live albums, but the audience is virtually nonexistent other than intro and outro clapping. Nice laid back piano jazz.

2/5
Artsy! Not radio friendly though.
The Strokes
2/5
Hard to listen to an entire album with the same processed vocals.
Last Night is the big hit.
Basic rock with a hint of punk.
The Kinks
1/5
Waterloo Sunset is decent.
Happy go lucky album.
UB40
3/5
Ska, i like the sax.
5/5
Take a Bow: cool chord progression, fast arpeggiated synths sounds futuristic with big power chords on the guitar;
Starlight: poppy happy synth melody, but gets grungier and angrier before quietly sings the album title in the lyrics;
Supermassive Black Hole: heavy sound at first, but with falsetto voice and some harmony, industrial sounds near end a la Nine Inch Nails;
Soldier's Poem: slow 6-8 in the style of Elvis' Can't Help Falling In Love With You; nice chords and interesting chromatic vocal harmonies in the style of the Beatles and Queen, but a dark story;
Invincible: starts with slow military marching drum with sad organ playing a pretty chord progression, but builds up with a synth sounding like a theramin, sounds inspired by U2 after two minutes mark, after 3:30 it gets grungier and angrier with histrionic fast arpeggiated chords on the lead guitar
Assassin: best (angry) song on the album, driving, thrashing, angry, cool rhythm guitar;
Exo-Politics: theramin synth again, vocal harmony;
City of Delusion: very dramatic song starts with acoustic guitar quick strumming then driving bass line, then a middle eastern synth feel before turning to harder rock followed by quick synth bass line that sounds like it's under water. Acoustic guitar followed by rumpet line in spanish feel starting at 3:30. Great song to pound along with on guitar, piano, or drums;
Knights of Cydonia: dramatic sound in the spaghetti western feel of Ennio Morricone's movie music, then surfer guitar with simple melody on distorted electric guitar with a bit of trumpet followed by a vocal harmony section.
Donald Fagen

Famous tracks:
What's Love Got To Do With It (but not a great song);

Interesting covers:
I Can't Stand The Rain
Let's Stay Together (Al Green)
Help! (Beatles, but in a motown / gospel feel, with Jeff Beck on guitar)
Primal Scream
3/5
Scottish band with a dreamier, gentler sound than you'd expect with 'Primal Scream' as the band name. Even some song titles imply that they'd be a hard rock angry band.
Movin' On Up is my favourite track.
Tricky
2/5
Hell is Round the Corner is a remake of a Potroishead remake.
Deep Purple
