While not everyone's cup of tea, I really enjoy the Carpenters; very talented siblings with songs that have become standards.
Close to You, Love is Surrender, We've Only Just Begun, and Crescent Noon are highlights, and the cover songs (Help, Reason to Believe) are executed with originality.
A very pleasant and relaxing album featuring one of the best - if not THE best - female vocals in pop history.
Elvis.... I don't consider him the "king of rock & roll". I grew up with the adults around me listening to him, I have family members who still obsess over him, and I'm very familiar with his work.
I've never liked his voice, and I've never understood the hype. Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly had more appeal for me, but maybe Elvis really had that raw sexuality 50's teens and 20-somethings were starved for?
that being said, the songs are so-so. I hate to rate it so low, but besides Blue Suede Shoes, nothing really stands out for me. The cover versions were done better by their original singers and/or writers; I will never, ever put this one on again.
fantastic debut album. I was a Zeppelin fan from an early age, although I started young with "Presence". I was familiar with this album, and I think the first side is rock solid. I honestly prefer Cream; and while I like other Zep albums but this is a powerhouse that has stood the test of time.

I will in no way deny Aretha's amazing vocal talent, she set standards people are still following.
however, it's so repetitive ... even with the great Memphis production and musicians, every song has to have the vocal gymnastics. can she just simply sing a song without oversinging? only one song here ("Natural Woman") does so.
It's the same feeling with the Janis Joplin featured here earlier.
It's a shame because the songs here are really good; I just can't stand the constant up down up down up down vocal runs. It's tiring.

the production is extraordinary, but it sounds like music from a porn theater. there are hundreds of albums that sound similar.

Have heard about this group, but never listened to them.
the album started off well enough; really liked the 2nd track (Paper Bag), and didn't even mind the slow descent into noir weirdness.
But by the time the singer started hocking loogies (Deer Stop), I was pretty much over it.
The album ended on a couple of high notes (Utopia, Horse Tears), but it's not something I would return to.
Mercury Prize or not, Like most of this odd 1001 list, not sure why this is "essential listening".
Woah! Knocked out by this one. I only knew "Get Together" and literally nothing else. I was very, very surprised by this. Definitely a snapshot of its time, I was impressed with this. Would go great with the Grateful Dead or the Allmans on a playlist.
Will absolutely be searching out their other material.
