Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Utterly baffled by this inclusion on the list. The music is fine, but, boy, are there so many better albums that could have taken this album’s place.
Mmmm me he aburrido. Suena bien y el saxofón siempre es un extra, pero no ha terminado de brillar. Me guardo "Not a lot to do". ¿Imprescindible? no. ¿Hay que escucharlo? no pasa nada por hacerlo, pero no pasará a mi lista de favoritos.
If you told me this came out in 1978, I wouldn't have questioned it. Completely devoid of anything innovative or interesting. It's 2004, "The Glow, Pt. 2" has been out for 3 years, you have no excuse to still be making cock rock. I have no problem with "Garage Rock Revival" or whatever, it can be done right (Franz Ferdinand's debut comes to mind), but it's so obvious that the only reason boomer music critics eat this stuff up is because it makes them nostalgic for the times they didn't use to shit their pants regularly. "Havana Gang Brawl" sounds like the Spider-Man theme song. Didn't like it very much, like a 2.4/5.
really brings me back to mvp baseball 2005
I already had to listen to The Libertines a few days ago, please no more overhyped indie bands from 2004 that were just never that good to begin with. 5/10
Okay background music. Just rubbed me wrong when listening
Scouse no mark gobshites, more famous for a cover of one of their tunes than anything they ever did. I think I had this and never got to the end of listening to the CD. It's fine, it's just not great in any way
Really like it
Its close to being just a "normal" rock album but somehow it has just enough speciality to not be one.
Weird af. Not my kinda thing though.
Unique use of the sax in a non-ska setting. Unfortunately it doesn't really hold my interest all that much. I just chalk up the Zutons at the end of of a long list of anonymous early to mid aughts rock bands (Klaxons, The Bravery, etc.) 2/5
It's so generic that I already forgot it. I'll rate it with 2 stars to not be unfair; maybe it was just my memory not working well.
One of the songs ('Confusion') sounds like a bad Dr John pastiche. Some of them sound like bad John Sebastian take-offs. At its best, one could say that it sounds like the first Captain Beefheart album, were it to be shorn of all its interesting bits. The saxophone is really farty throughout. Not great.
I didn’t mind this so much when they weren’t trying to do that garage rock thing. Not something I’ll be clamoring to listen to again, but the presence of a saxophone was appreciated.
Can't see what's really so striking in this umpteenth "rock revival" band from the naughts. Maybe some off-kilter or cutesy arrangements in quite a few moments. But as of now, the barebones songs don't seem so memorable to me. Such songwriting is probably endearing to certain types of listeners, still remembering this act today. But to me, all of this was already a little self-indulgent in 2004, and time has not been kind to the "style" of a lot of those songs. Not a "bad" band by any means, yet a lot of "style" and not much exciting substance. Listen to Geese's very recent *3D Country* to see how rock revivalism can be done right--i.e. in a manner that gives the clear feeling your band can paradoxically gain a whole distinct identity through the use of past references, and with a knack for leftfield, energetic flourishes from start to finish. In comparison, The Zutons sond a bit bland, and justifying their inclusion in this list might therefore be a bit of a stretch... 2/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential albums", translating to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes. Next, please. Number of albums left to review: 333 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 300 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 161 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 215 (including this one, many other full-length releases are more important to me).
Weinig boeiends gehoord.
So disappointed in this one. Felt fresh and exciting from the get-go channeling the early-aughts rock sound I love so much, but once the tempo slows down the whole thing fell into a morass of the worst late-90s ballad schlock. Had things stayed in the uptempo range this was well on its way to a 4, but the whole thing just ended ip testing my patience by the end
Boring
It's like Jet with more pretension and less kick ass It's Ska Jet Real author age/location bias on this one I reckon
Mmmm
My housemate was a huge fan of The Zutons so I saw them loads live around this era and prior, nice guys and pleasant enough music but WHY is this on the list?
A little comedic, but just found myself getting bored. Not bad-bad, but not good either. No stand-out tracks for me. A 2
This album was rather bland. It is an inoffensive mix of 2000s British alternative with some indie rock/folk thrown in. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really excel at anything in particular and blends together more than it should in its short runtime.
This is probably going to be shit. Post britpop shite. On listening, it's a bit more upbeat and "fun" than I was expecting it to be. This does not mean I enjoyed it.
Whoever named this band and album and song titles and ok’d the art thought they were one thing, and then the songwriters thought they were a different thing. And those songwriters also disagreed on what the thing was. None of this is bad, but I don’t know why it is here and it’s all over the place
I did listen but I didn’t want to. I’ve never liked this lot. Just felt like a novelty, covers band, sticking to one era, except somehow they do that with original material. Uninspiring. But they can play their instruments so fine, I guess.
I was glad to discover that the music was better than the crappy album cover. Interesting blend of Indie folk/rock and it sounds like a mix of the Black Keys and Spoon. There were some good moments here and this band definitely has potential, but nothing bowled me over or made me look up from my work to stop to listen more carefully.
There are parts of this album that were good. Then the last couple of songs the tone of the album changed to more of an indie feel. Some of it sounded familiar but I can't be sure. No need to revisit.
When I saw the name and album cover, I assumed this was going to be some obnoxious third wave ska album. It turned out to be bland indie rock instead, so I guess that's slightly better?
Meh
nao o melhor deles
This was definitely one of the albums of all time! But seriously, it is obvious that the person who made this album has a taste (as is his right!) except it not entirely my taste at time. To me this sounded a bit too familiar without it moving me. Not bad, but boring.
Cover art and title suggested it'd be kinda wild. It was not wild. Just more bland UK indie rock. 2/5.
Hmm ok
What the hell is this. Makes sense this was only included in the 2005 edition. They go back to swing revival a couple times. One of the songs, I don't remember which, sounds like 'Zoot Suit Riot.'
If I was feeling generous, I would say the music is serviceable and it was nice to hear some sax thrown in to the compositions. But those vocals and lyrics are awful. Sorry, but I have not heard anyone mention The Zutons since the mid-2000s; why have so many great albums been omitted from your list for this?
Pressure Point
The kind of bland indie rock sound that might have one cool song to be featured on an iPod ad in the 2000s. Maybe this is why it’s on the list, there is one half decent song that got heavy rotation one summer (probably Remember Me), and the author of the list got all sentimental? I have one such song, a one hit wonder by a band called The Bees but I wouldn’t call it an album anyone must hear before they die. I was going to give this a 2 for blandness, but then I got angry that this album was included instead of some other album that might deserve a spot (more jazz perhaps?). All because the author lives in a hipster bubble. So a 1 it is. Even my Liverpudlian friend agrees.
I don't know, mate, was it your mom? But seriously, that was boring.
The person who made this list has an uncle in the band. I’m guessing, but it’s the only reason for inclusion that makes sense.
the hell
Tämligen ocharmig mish mash i typisk post-britpop anda. Stundtals låter det lite som ett dåligt The Coral stundtals som ett dåligt Mando Diao. Naturligtvis helt obefogat att det är med här
Det är var riktigt trist. När mungigan kommer fram i Nightmare part II är det god natt. Visst hopp tänds i Not a lot to do. En rätt fin låt som passar sångarens röst mycket bättre än de övriga huliganskrålandet.
Very lame. Toothless. Baffling production choices. Soulless vocals.
Definitely an album I could have gone without hearing. Why are there so many rubbish landfill indie albums on this list?
1/5 Didn’t care for this album, nothing stood out.
Lo escuché apenas me levanté
Strange music. No real hits.
Favorite track(s): I should've skipped this album out of protest against Big Indie.
Nope.
Vapid, forgettable 00s indie.
I dunno what a Zuton is, but they should’ve stayed dead.
This just sounds like “Novelty Indie” to me…. But the novelty wears off after one track and is replaced by an intense tedium. 1.4
Utterly awful album. The best songs are the ones which are mercifully just unoriginal and boring. How on earth this is considered to be an album that must be heard before dying will remain a mystery to all who have to retrospectively endure it as part of this challenge. If only someone had actually killed The Zutons before they had a chance to create this.
Who cares? More bland, generic alt British music that just isn’t that interesting
I killed the zutons
Feels like abit of the farm vibes with hay bales like im on the banjo I didnt really like maybe if I own a cow it would make me think differently also can we talk about when the put the vr on the cow crazy stuff
Snooze. Boring and pretentious
The sort of mid-00's anonymous pop-rock that was ultimately so milquetoast it allowed someone else to lift their best song and effectively make it their own.
The Zutons should have killed this album.
No
Artistically wanting. A rough album to start my journey on. Favourite track is 4. Confusion. 1/5
There were small bits of a couple of songs that I somewhat liked, but for the most part - proper shite His singing and that saxophone can fuck right off
Pretty forgettable pop rock. I can usually get into this sort of stuff for a track or two, but this just didn't do it for me. It was just really generic.
Not my style
- Don’t really remember much of it. The melodies didn’t really hit for me. Actively disliked a number of the songs, too. It also felt kind of all over the place. I’m sure I’ll never listen to it again. - For me, the lead singer’s voice is a little too thin to work with the more complex instrumentation (which is what I liked best about the music). - I want the album either to be more clean or more feral. That all said, I just can’t get into jazz, so take my review for what it is. 1.5, I guess
The Coral were on here already and they sound exactly the same, at least they had a hit on that record. Rubbish
Not in my wheelhouse.
Do you know how hard it is to get me to loathe a band that includes saxophone with rock music? Congratulations to the Zutons for accomplishing that feat. Purpose-built to make me want to punch a wall because of how utterly boring they are. Garbage music.
would not recommend
I was not looking forward to this at all. I felt like I knew what it would be just from the cover, the terrible band name, and the Wikipedia snippet clipped here. Suspicions confirmed. Got to track six.
Ok I don’t want to be a hater, but why was this included? It was a hit when it came out but I missed it and am not sorry. Strange choice.
Something about the Zutons . . . Is just annoying to me Pass
Not for me
Didn’t like anything about this
Rating: 0.4 I can’t answer the question posed in the album title but I’ll happily kill them a second time if I have to.
I bet this sucks.
Don't like it. Very sort of banjo/folk-y, not my cup of tea, maybe for someone else though.
Bad and got worse as it went on. Just uninspired.
1. zuton - 1.5 2. point - 1.5 3. uuill - 0 4. confuzion - 1.5 5. gang - 1 6. railroad - 1.5 7. time - 1.5 8. nightmare - 1 9. do - 1.5 10. remember - 1 11. dirty - 1 12. moonz - 1 13. think - 0 FUCKING ZERO
Dreadful album. Not a single good idea or a tune worth adding to any playlist in the whole record.
i kinda dislike the term "landfill indie" because i think it has the connotation that so much of 2000s indie music is garbage. but this website has given me a new interpretation. it's called that because there's enough of it to fill a landfill. and so, so goddamn much of it is represented on this list. this isn't a particularly good example at all. every interesting idea is smothered under a blanket. i didn't need to hear this before i die, and i think i would stand by that even if British 2000s indie rock was my favorite genre. also the cover art of their newest album is ai LMAO. deserves to be one of the 1001? nope.
3 songs in, not finishing. Can’t figure out for the life of me how some of these albums make this list.
We're weird!
Dreadful.
Listened to one track, that was enough.
Truly awful. Again I find myself asking why this would ever be an album you simply have to hear before you die?
This is #day222 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... the band’s name and the album title sound like a joke to me. The Zutons… who the fuck are The Zutons? How did they get here? After I brief research, I found out that The Coral, who I rated a 1 a while ago, are label mates with them. Oh well... This isn’t my cup of tea at all. In fact, I’d rather have coffee. It's a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day223.
Not really my style. I would give it an extra half star if I could though
This is about as mid as I remember them being at the time. Not terrible, but also not essential listening in any way. I think it was Amy Winehouse who killed the Zutons, when she did a much better version of their best song!
Completely forgettable
Dire
Whoever did...... Thank you for your service
Another record that should have have been produced, nevertheless on this list.
They were celebrated for "Valerie" (not on this album). I feel like I am hearing a resort, cruise or country club cover band/session musicans? versatile but nothing shines, moves or touches me. No review needed. Not to me essential, unique, compelling, influential delightful or challenging. I even went to find 'Valerie', their one hit. But their smoothness has become a grating blandness to my ear. I'd nominate this as one (of many abscure albums) to PRUGE FORM THE LIST to bring in more varied, independant, World and female artists who can introduce us to new sounds.
It was OK, but, no, I did not HAVE to hear this...
Very unremarkable album from 2004. Even though I would struggle to select albums from that year for this list (majority of 2004 album I can think of are at best 4 stars), it still does not make sense to include this album.
Kann ich nichts damit anfangen.
someone who had to listen to this dadrock bullshit, that's who
Well...I'd never heard of The Zutons before, let alone played one of their albums. Was it going to be some sparkly SciFi inspired music (given the band name). I've played this twice now. And I have to say it was pretty disappointing. As the album started, I was thinking it all sounded a bit like a spirited attempt to replicate The White Stripes, but then it descended into a bunch of derivative dull tracks. I can't for the life of me understand why this album (largely composed of pub rock knees up type songs) could be considered a great album.
Pareceu-me como The Strokes tentando fazer algo mais sério, até ficar bem enfadonho.
That was bland and pointless. Whoever killed the Zutons should have done it before this album was made.
2004 called, they said uhh they're running outta you 1/10
This feels like musical theater rock
Oh……….oh, um…….no no no no no no no no no no no no. Nope. Nah. Nope. Yeah, no. Not- I don’t think….Excuse me, waitress? Yes, um, I don’t think this was meant for our table. It’s not mine, so, um…..yes, can you send it back, please? Oh, for sure. Yes, I order the Bolognese. Not, well, whatever this is. What is it, exactly? Is that…oh, yeah, well, that’s interesting. No, no thank you. But thank you for understanding. As long as it’s not on my bill ha ha ha ha ha…….Thank you so much. Anyway, as I was saying….
WTF?!?
oh wow this was boring
STANDOUTS: Remember Me OVERALL: 1.5/5; it took me four tries to get through this. Nothing offensively bad—just bland.
Dude. Really? This is supposed to be a list of albums that you would recommend to someone as an album you must hear. Who in their right mind would believe that this is an album that anyone would recommend for any reason at all ever? 1/5
Franchement ce nom de groupe
Confusion and remember me are good, rest of the album is surprisingly weak. Thought this would be better than it was for some reason.
i killed the zutons
Not crazy about it!
We need to remove every UK music writer's contributions to this list until we figure out what is even happening over there.
one, horrible weird and no

Wasn't a fan of this when it came out (20 years ago? Wtf happened?!) - I was working at HMV at the time and it got absolutely rinsed to death. Fair play they've probably made a killing from all the royalties over the years, countless cover versions and advert music etc. But christ, their music bores the hole off me
Rock revival ala Black Crows but for the post Strokes era. They're pretty eclectic in their influences and have a wide range of sounds/styles on the album - classic rock, funk, folk, ska, balkan jazz, indie pop, and alt country - and to go with that there's very diverse instrumentation. It's an enjoyable but pretty unoriginal album though - they're like a really good local band but with a pretty defined ceiling. Boomer hegemony is when a perfectly fine but nothing remarkable band like this is included in a list of essential albums because of how well they hue to the same preconceived template of guitar-based rock that conservatively defines the cannon. Favorites: Not a Lot to Do, Remember Me
Trash
Ahh the nostalgia I have for this album. Joining the college radio station and getting excited to finally mainline groundbreaking new music. Buying this at a shop during turkey day break after hearing the energetic opening track and the big single. Realizing beyond the energetic opening track and the big single, there isn’t much here. Hearing the phrase “dipsy doodle” delivered with sincerity. Havana Gang Brawl. Havana Gang Brawl? Ha-van-a Gaaaaaaaang Brawl. This is the first album (of 650 and counting) I’ve heard before and *don’t* like. This whole thing sounds so *empty.* This album taught me 60s/70s nostalgia only gets you so far. Put The Coral on this list.
