Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Yeah not was a plain old rock and roll album with nothing to add from a new sound perspective but it wasn’t bad.
They have mastered the catchy intro: so many songs sound fresh for the first 60 seconds, with the promise of a chorus that you’ll want to sing over and over again, but then it doesn’t materialize. The mix of folk and garage rock is eclectic and the 3-note saxophone is a nice touch, if a bit simplistic. I’m surprised critics didn’t give this LP more love. Too bad these guys didn’t come out in the mid-seventies, I would have been a fan.
Might have to listen to again and I'll end up rating it with 4 stars. Started with energy and put me in the mood, felt like something new for me, which grabbed me. But ended up fizzling out by the end, maybe I didn't pay enough attention. Like the concept, though. + Zuton Fever + Pressure Point + Havana Gang Brawl
The quicker paced songs (don’t ever think, zuton fever, long time coming) are fantastic but the more ballady type tracks are blandly inoffensive.
A good time. So good that the use of a saxophone is pleasant. Parts are quite quirky without veering off into annoying territory. Nothing that'll change your life, but it feels like repeat listens will offer rewards.
I heard songs I think I recognize on a plenty-lively debut. The width of the record doesn't convince me of virtuosity or worthy confrontation, but it does keep each song fresh enough.
Started really strong and I thought I had Zuton fever but by track four I realized it was a false alarm. Overall a decent enough 2000’s indie album but I don’t see how it’s a necessary listen, there’s nothing exceptional going on here but it’s a fun enough listen. 3 stars
Trallvänligt men saknar låtar som sticker ut.
What his album is is standard 2000’s indie garage rock with a British, almost Brit-pop twist. Doesn’t reinvent the wheel even if the single in it is hands down a CLASSIC.
They were a one hit wonder, but then Amy Winehouse blew shit out of the water with her cover of Valerie (or was it the other way around? Did they do a decent cover of her song? Just Googled it: no). They headlined the Godney Gathering festival last summer, but I couldn't be arsed to stay to see them live. I was tired, it was muddy and I had one tired teenage child moping about and one who wanted to party until dawn. This was the right kind of contemporary upbeat to suit my mood yesterday and I did enjoy listening to it even if it was a bit like Travis with a horn section.
Ok album but not my thing
The inclusion of (I think) a saxophone is a nice touch to stand out, but it doesn't help the Zutons from sounding like every other band of this era any way. Certainly not a bad sound, but I feel had I heard this in passerby nothing would've stood out to me. The more country-like influenced tracks here are weird too, just feel off. Light three.
Enjoyable ! 3*
Bit of fun. Those first four or so songs were like going back in a time machine.
Never heard of the zutins, music was interesting may return to see what else they have to offer
I quite enjoyed this. I had never heard to The Zutons, but they surprised me. A few weaker tracks in the middle, but over all enjoyable. 3.5/5
I usually like Brit Pop. This album was just ok for me. It would probably grow in me if I listened a few more times.
Quite a bit filler but very fond memories
Pressure point Remember me Railroad
Enjoyable at times but not special
Aardige rockmuziek.
It's not bad! For an indie guitar record in this period it manages to not be either incredibly annoying or snoresome, vanishingly rare around this time. Obviously it's derivative, but it's not bad. Like The Black Keys except with half decent tunes. I did more or less tune out long before the end though. Suspect this will get an aggregated 3 rating due to collecting lots of 3s, rather than lots of 5s and 1s like many far better albums in this list do.
1001 album serieusement ? 3.10
Pretty simple, but quite enjoyable.
Skeptical of anything from the mid 00's that I haven't heard of. Have people heard of this band, and remember them? The songs vacillate between pretty good and catchy, to simple and boring, to schticky and annoying in a way that it's hard to tell if it's a joke or not. The singer has a strong voice, and the instrumentation sounds good, and in the end I came out liking it. But still skeptical - sounds like their second album made more impact, maybe if we're convinced this band deserves a place on the list that one should be it? I found the second half of the album to be much stronger, starting with "Nightmare Part II."
More mid 2000s UK brit-rock. Mid being the keyword.
you know I can’t hate it!
Strong start, mid finish.
Enjoyable.
Fun listen, but I don't really care Who Killed... The Zutons. Another indie rock Brit album from the naughties that doesn't belong on this list.
Another useless british album. 2004 with the sound of 1984. The voice is not bad, but it's not good either. The music at the very least is not obnoxious. It's not good, it has some good ideas, but it's just "too much" most of the time, with a low production quality, voices that get mixed up with music and percussions. Nah, this is not me. They sound like the Liverpool Red Hot Chilli Peppers-inspired 50 pence shop band, and I mean it with all the due lack of respect for both bands. Is this one of the top 1000 albums in the world? Nah, not even closely. But at the very least this is not bad. If I get two meaningless british indie rock albums in a row I'll probably drop the 1001 albums generator thingy. It´s such meaningless music - but at least this time around it sounds at the very least bearable.
sombody said it was scooby doo music. it is.
I don't know but I'd like to shake their hand! 😂😂😂
i can always count on this list to ruin my day.
A familiar comment, near lament, why this one? The album neither begins, nor starts anything. Seems part of a trend. Offers anything radical, even in a bad way. I had never heard of the band prior to this listing, so at least no preconceived notions. The album opens in a more off center fashion with some skronking sax on “Zuton Fever.” “Pressure Point” also included some similar sax work in the background, but it like the next song “You Will, You Won’t” seem like trying for an arena rock size hit. “Havana Gang Brawl” and “Nightmare Part Two” have some interesting guitar and percussion work. Not sure if this is an accurate comparison, the harmony vocals started to veer into Vampire Weekend territory. This comment fits most the music as it sounds decent and enticing in fits and starts. It ultimately did not register with me on any deeper level in any fashion.
This must have been one that a finisher voted in. I can’t see any other reason why it was here. Not that it was bad it just wasn’t anything.
This is…fine? I guess? It’s music, but did I *have* to listen to it? No.
I think this may be the first 'english rock band' entry (that was previously unknown to me) that I've actually enjoyed. Direct, middle of the road, not bad but not great but kinda enjoyable music. I wish I could give it 2.5 stars. I'll go two because I don't see myself ever picking these guys again
I didn’t like this album at the time. My opinion hasn’t changed. Another example of a turd being less whiffy than all other turds in the British music industry at the time.
This album kinds feels unfocused. one song has an alternative rock sound, the one goes into blues rock, then one goes into indie rock and next another one sounds more like garage rock. There are a couple of good songs here but that's about it
I didn't know they were killed? Never knew them, but not to speak ill of the dead, it's no loss to music. Odd mix of tunes and styles.
A first time listen, but this is one I struggled to connect with. It feels very firmly planted in a specific era of early-2000s throwback rock I tend to find generic and unexciting. Standout moment: The slightly countrified jangle of Remember Me.
About as lightweight an album as I've ever heard. It passed me by with virtually no impact, just regurgitation of older bands' music in a music-by-numbers style. Two stars.
I did not care about this record, why is it even on the list?
I didn't hate it.
Meh
Who cares man
One of thousands upon thousands of acts who are adept at aping cool sounds, but appear to have no ability to create emotionally moving or interesting MUSIC. The saddest part is that they don't seem to understand the difference.
Bro I tried but I survived the early 2000s in real time I don’t need to be reminded of all these fucking bands
While this album does go down easy, I found it to be an entirely forgettable experience. Upon finishing my listen, no songs or hooks have really stuck with me. It's not terrible by any means, but I really can't fathom how it makes this list, it doesn't seem particularly bold or influential. Surely there are more deserving indie rock albums from the early 2000s.
Early noughties indie-landfill. Nowhere near as interesting or quirky as it thinks it is. If this album was a person they'd walk around wearing bowling shoes and carrying a biscuit tin and listening to The Zutons. In other words: an affectatious wanker. Absolutely no reason whatsoever for this to be on the list. 'Who Killed The Zutons' Career?' would be a better title. And the answer is them, obviously. Best Tracks: Pressure Point; You Will You Won't; Dirty Dancehall
I liked some songs but didn't really care for others. The music was mostly good though. Somewhere between a 2 and a 3 but I'll give it a 2 cause I will prolly never listen to it again.
Same song over and over
Not a sound I vibe with
Vem dödade The Zutons? Lite i stil med The Coral, The Thrills, The Vue och The Hal - men vem minns dem i dag.
Har aldrig hört talas om det här. Småtrevlig indiepop med punkiga inslag. Emellertid inget som sticker ut. En stabil tvåa. Varken mer eller mindre.
Wish there was 2.5 rating option cause this is just the definition of mid
I find this record offensive in ways I can't really put my finger on.
Enjoyable but nothing stood out strong. High 2/low 3
Zutons was actually fine, properly fine, high 2/5 fine, drifted off in the second half but well put together songs fine
Good but too long
Its fine but i also have been struggling to get through it for 2 weeks.
Not sure how this made the list. Also not sure how a band can sound like they have so much energy and personality but be so borning and bland.
Groupe inconnu. =>2/5
literally never heard of these guys, I have no expectations or anything eh, overall it's fine? I guess. I just really dont care for it at all
What is this? I wouldn’t be surprised if it were AI generated.
Very bland, feels like a million other albums should’ve been in the list first. I can sort of see how this might’ve led to inspiring bands like Arctic Monkeys or whoever later on maybe. Certainly did take me back to being a child in 2004, can say that about it.
2 sterne
Helt ointressant
I should like this but I find it irritating.
Couldn't listen entirely
Interesting but something I would not listen to again.
Ganske kjedelig
not on spotify
The album is fine enough, but it seems to be designed to impress the person who says "They don't make any good music these days," and has forgotten that 2004 was 22 years ago. Listenable, well played, but not particularly inventive, memorable, or meaningful. A pastiche of bygone styles. I have trouble seeing how it made the list, so it's getting rounded down on that basis. I certainly could have missed this one before I die.
Unfortunately, this obscure post-2000s alt rock ska album was not super impressive, other than a few moments early on that sounded like Jack White. 2/5
Eh
Pressure Point is a bop the rest was pretty mediocre
Who Killed The Zutons? I don't care, what I want to know is who included them on this list? I mean its not bad but it certainly doesn't do anything interesting enough to be one of the 1001+ on this list
Strange ... this made it on the list, so it's the arguably one of the best albums the release year had to offer, and yet, I don't recall 2004 being such a boring affair.... 2/5
The boggest of bog-average. If only the songs on the album were as memorable as the actual cover
Removed Album #26 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) Cool. Another ex-list album. I've noticed this album while flicking through the book simply because it has an eye-catching cover, though I have very little idea as to what genre this album could belong to. It's either indie rock or something jazzy, though given the year release I'm confident in hedging my bets on indie rock. May as well get into it. Heyo, on the money. This was a somewhat disappointing listen, especially since the first track was pretty cool. Great vocal melody, and I like the twisted, surf rock instrumental. The rest of the album has some degree of variety, but for the most part it felt like the album was trying to re-capture that lighting in a bottle and falling flat on its face. The instrumentals from track two and onwards sound pretty flat, featuring only a handful of instruments and a prominent dead air which lingers in the background. The result is a two-dimensional sound and instrumentals/vocals that don't really mesh with one another. Overall, I was pretty bored by this, though I hold "Zuton Fever" in high regard. Book time. Added to the 2005 edition. Removed from the 2008 revision. Diverse musical influences. "...one of the year's finest debuts". Wikipedia says this album sold well and garnered a modest reaction from critics, though it only had chart success in the UK. So, why was this album removed? Lack of notability, I'm guessing. This is pretty identical to many of the other 2000s indie picks on this list, which is to say that it's pretty unremarkable and pretty British. I can agree with the removal, frankly. In place of this album, I humbly submit "Oranges & Lemons" by XTC for inclusion on the list.
Bäst är Pressure point, Remember me.
Fun, I don't know if this is something I will throw on but myself, but I'm glad to know it exists. This is a 2.5 for me, but I can't give half scores...
Sounded much like a second-rate White Stripes at times. Sounded ok on track seven. Almost fell asleep towards the end
Never heard of this band. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Not worth another listen.
3/10
Not one I'd listen to again
Album #32: Who Killed…… The Zutons? Genre (W): Folk, garage rock, indie pop Singles: Pressure Point, You Will You Won’t, Remember Me, Don’t Ever Think (Too Much), Confusion I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts: I don’t know what to make of this music yet, it sounds kind of like a more reserved Franz Ferdinand or The Killers. However, the lyrics remind me of a different kind of album, a more radio-friendly version of Flight of the Knife. This album isn’t doing anything for me. Favorite songs: You Will You Won’t, Long Time Coming, Not a Lot to Do
Yawn. I guess there's a reason these guys are most famous for a Mark Ronson/Amy Winehouse song
This was so boring. Very unrequired. listening. Good name for a band though
I don't think I hadn't heard the Zutons before, but I see their big thing is that they wrote "Valerie," which is more famous as the Mark Ronson/Amy Winehouse cover (and also is not on this album). So thanks for giving some of our friends a Karaoke go-to songs, Zutons. Zutons are sort of a retro sounding act, but not in a bad way. Is this what British people meant when they talked about "Landfill Indie"? I like this album ok, but I don't think I am going to come back to it much. Edit: Originally gave this a 3. But I have edited this to a 2. 3 is too generous for an album that I thought was fine, but made no real impact on music overall and I don't plan on coming back to.
Their debut album was so good, that whatever came next had a lot to live up to. Unfortunately for me this does not match up.
The first song scared my cat.
Another incredibly unremarkable album. So very bland. I didn’t hate it, it just didn’t stand out at all. There was no special little something that made it catchy or memorable. The lead singer had a nice voice though. Don’t think I’ll ever listen again and even if I did I’d probably think it was my first time hearing it 🤷♀️
Hmm not my kind of thing
This was boooooooooring
this album isn’t bad but for me just didn’t have any standouts. i tried to actively listen to it but ended up just having it in the background while I did other stuff. no song really made me sit up and get back into it. like I said not bad tho… -favourite track: YOU WILL YOU WON’T
There's a lot of good stuff here, and maybe I'm biased for having come up around this time, but this is a particular type of indie that will always feel forgettable to me. Play Valerie from the second album if you must and move on, 2.5*
Ordinary, I couldn’t get halfway through
I really didn’t care for this too much. I found the vocals a bit grating, didn’t care for the ska type of instrumentation (were the horns necessary?) and I was pretty over this album 3 songs in. Not the worst album I’ve heard, but I could have died without listening to it.
Kjedelog ville ikke hørt på det igjen
It was ok? Really liked the songs but just aren't my type of song.
Gjorde ikke stort inntrykk denne.
Fun but didn’t do much for me.
This felt like a gwar without as much fun?
Meh, it's ok, not something I would put in rotation.
Not sure how/why this ended up on the list as I can’t really see this as being influencial, there’s no hit songs/singles. It’s better than Mylo’s Destroy Rock and Roll though, so spared from a 1 star.
Not rallye outstanding
This is one of those albums that just has no business being here. It's very average, but not average in a particularly cool or interesting way. Let me clarify: there are some albums that I don't particularly enjoy but I respect their influence and how they tried to push boundaries (Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum). There is also albums that I technically don't enjoy much, but are still fun to listen to because they're kinda absurd (GnR - Chinese Democracy). This one is neither. It's just watered down radio friendly indie rock without much bite.
Dirty Dancehall was neat, and the rest wasn't bad, but it didn't strike me as particularly noteworthy. I feel no desire to return to this album.
Haven't heard of them and listening to them changed nothing in my life. Deeply unremarkable, there must be 50 other similar albums from the same era. I've learned that they wrote Valerie but it's not even on this album so what's the point 2/5
Album ok. Entre country i rock, no m'ha encantant.
Maso
I should like this (Scouse Liverpool Indie fan), but I do not. Better tracks; 1. Havana Gang Brawl 2. Railroad 3. You will you won’t
Inoffensive rock music from the UK. I liked some of the songs, but the album's overall blandness made me kinda bored. 5/10
More Jack White sounding than I imagined. Some nice bluesy rock tracks but nothing hugely memorable.
Simply crap
I've never heard of The Zutons before, but these reviews making fun of the album's name are pretty great. I have no idea what this album is going to sound like, but one the reviews says "This is like if the Black Keys wrote interesting songs," and as someone who owns seven or eight Black Keys albums, I take offense to that. Regardless, I'm interested to see what my last album from 2004 has in store for me. Well, I don't think I'll be checking out any more albums by The Zutons anytime soon, because I was pretty underwhelmed by this album. There were a few fun moments on this album, but I thought this album was pretty forgettable. The saxophone was a nice touch on some songs, but other than that, I didn't think there was anything particularly unique about The Zutons' sound. I don't understand why you have someone in your band dedicated to the saxophone if you're not going to utilize them that often. The other aspects of The Zutons' music was pretty bland in my opinon. The vocals were pretty middle of the road, the guitar playing wasn't that interesting, and the bass and percussion rarely made their presence felt. I really don't get how this album made an impact when other rock bands like The Killers, The White Stripes, Arcade Fire, and Green Day were all putting out some great work at the same time. Even though this album wasn't my jam, there were a few decent songs on here: "Pressure Point" was fine overall, but the bridge was particularly excellent. The cowbell percussion was excellent, and it really sucked me into the groove of the song. "You Will You Won't" was really fun, and easily the best song on the album. The vocals were really catchy, and the main guitar riff was infectious. The a capella bridge was really fun too. "Confusion" was pretty good, and like the other two songs I've already mentioned, this song also had a great bridge, punctuated by some good saxophone playing. I think my biggest problem with this album is that The Zutons don't really establish any sort of identity on this debut album of theirs. They tried to do a lot on this album, but they didn't do anything particularly well.
Interesting sound but a bit too 60s/70s for me
Fine
Garbage
This does not seem to belong on this list. It's fine, I just don't hear anything unique or groundbreaking at all. Unlike UK only artists like Suede, Blur, etc, these guys just don't seem like they're doing anything meaningful enough to warrant their inclusion. Still... it's not bad, but kind of meh.
It's fine, but it doesn't belong on this list. 2/5, it doesn't belong on the list of shame either.
There's no excuse for putting this out in 2004. Confusion is the only song I remotely cared for.
Rating: 5/10 The only thing I knew about the Zutons before this is that Pressure Point is one of the banger songs on the soundtrack of the GOAT sports game, MVP Baseball 2005. Otherwise, the rest of the album just started to get pretty boring for me as it went on. I think the album is another example of a clear recency bias the author of the book has for new albums released in Britain, as if he’s predicting these artists’ legacy rather than fitting in a deserving and proven essential album. Basically I’m asking this list to stop making me listen to 2000’s albums that no one has heard of or remembers just cause the author was completely wrong about them being fundamental or important
Confused by this albums inclusion at all. Pretty forgettable. 2/5
did they die? because I'm still a bit annoyed. This album is all over the place. I've listened to it probably 12 times and I keep forgetting it's on. There's a weird cadre of different music styles from like....ska? to rockabilly? it all sounds a bit much.
Intriguing. Liked parts of it.. 2.5
I ended up enjoying parts of it.
Meh.
Didn't really like this much. The writing all feels a bit insouciant and goofy with a few exceptions.
Very unremarkable. I assume what killed the Zutons was giving Dimery all their money in exchange for a place in the book.
This should be in Scooby Doo, or any ghost/monster hunting cartoon. It was pretty generic but it would fit in that context.
A nothingburger of an album if there ever was one.
A perfectly 2.5 star album.
Apple Music will just automatically start playing songs when an album is over. I knew the album was over when I got some songs I’d never heard but liked more than the album I just listened to. Is the editor of this book British? This is such a nothing band and a nothing album.
Not my cup of tea.
Who cares?
I just found this unexceptional. Some quirkiness, but not enough to keep it afloat.
I liked the retro vibe, especially in the first song. Unfortunately, the whole album relies on the same gimmick, so it quickly become repetitive. It's fun and unpretentious, but it's also so tame and conventional that it fails to really grow a personality. I enjoyed listening, but I know I won't remember anything in a few days. I considered giving it a 3*, but ultimately it feels more like a weird attempt at resurrecting Britpop than something that was truly relevant in 2004. Or like ironic music for mustache-twirling hipsters. Not sure why it needed to be on this list. 4/10
Listening to it, I thought, "Oh, another pop-rock album"... It's well-produced without being good, but I didn't remember anything about it because it lacks any particular flavor.
It feels both messy and unfocused, yet also too familiar compared to other early 2000s indie rock bands. The saxophone gimmick adds some color, but it can’t hide the weak songwriting and repetitive tunes. It’s an album full of energy but lacking in substance.
Meh, didn’t stop me in my tracks. Not terrible but just didn’t pull me in at all.
Not horrible, but pretty boring. There were a couple songs I liked like Pressure. There were some cheesy numbers. The leader singer's voice was grating at times. Another review mentioned that this sounded like Dad Rock, and I wholeheartedly agree. 2.5 out of 5.
no recuerdo
This album is another of those you see a lot in charity shops when scouring for CD’s. To me that means it was either bought in great quantities or the owners have quickly tired of it. Can understand the latter as this album could have been made by a number of similar indie bands around at the same time producing the same old bland Muzak. 2/5 25/10/25
Unimpressive
It annoys me when 2000’s British indie rock appears. It’s here cause of 1: recency bias - this album was 2004 and the first edition of the book was released in 2005! And 2: the main editor is British. This album *was* in fact removed in later editions of the book
A poor imitation of The Coral
I wasn’t familiar with The Zutons outside of “Valerie,” which I really enjoyed, but unfortunately I didn’t really like this. It was far from the worst thing I’ve heard on this list, but somehow I just found it to be so annoying. More annoying than actually bad, which then made it worse. It’s hard to describe my listening experience as anything other than “unpleasant.” I’m really not sure in what world I needed to hear this before I die. Musically this is a 3 but in terms of vibes and ambiance it’s a 1. Splitting the difference.
5,5/10 Highlights: Zuton Fever
Notingh memorable...
Definitely dropped me into an early 2000s time warp. I would’ve probably be really into them if I knew them at the time. But, as it is, I’m enjoying it more as a novelty than anything else.
Didn't listen to this in time and mixed it up with another album from a few days ago because the band names sounded similar. Why you giving me two similar sounding bands within a few days of each other? I even ended up listening to the album a second time without realizing I just listened to it. I did not think this was that special, so there you go. Making up the 2000s album quota.
Much better than I expected, funny how I bought it on CD when it came out but never got round to actually listening to the bloody thing. Why I wonder - yes why did I buy it on the first place? Good question. I am not a huge fan of Saxophones but the little farty noises are a highlight. Competent but a bit boring, only American mainstream can pull off.
Who killed them? No sé ni me importa.
It has it moments, but I generally really dislike this era of British indie, having lived through it.
Crisp, inoffensive and poppy but not particularly memorable.
Not my fav genre to begin with but it had a song that i liked a little bit “Not a lot to do” but even this is not close to be put into my fav songs.
This is fine, but it's another album where I'm not sure why it's novel enough to warrant a place on this list. It really just shows the English bias of the author. The album is basically a hodgepodge of classic rock and pop ripoffs and references, and my brain goes crazy going "oh that sounds like this and it's almost the same as this and oh that's just like this". There's just so much stuffed in and gets tiring. It's not especially enjoyable to me but I can see this band having a cult following and live shows being fun. There was a resurgence of old school rock in 2004, and I can see this sound kind of being an antithesis to that, the nerdier version of bands like the White Stripes or Strokes, more akin to Frank Zappa but without the generational talent.
Not sure who killed them, but I’m glad they did.
There were some spots that reminded me of other artists that I enjoy like The La's but this just isn't for me.
Who…… cares?
Not my thing.
Nothing special
The Zutons are really into being Zutons with the album and a song named after the band's namesake. Lead singer indie boy vocal stylings are incredibly annoying and unlistenable.
Recognisable. Liverpool, early millennium. There was a lot of it about - see The Coral etc. This is a bit more interesting than most, but still a long way from being anything close to great. I've zero interest in listening to this again in my life. 2.5
IT was only OK
Why could this possibly be here
meh. I appreciate the attempt to melt classic rock into pop/alternative sounds but I feel that at the end of the day it is unsuccessful.
Longhaired Landfill From Liverpool!
Mid album but they wrote Valerie so they get at least a 2
Pretty forgettable pop-rock album, nothing really interesting about it. It coule have been a good album from the 80s but it’s two decades late… Favorites : - Zuton fever (nice riff) - Havana gang brawl
Honestly a bit of a bland album in all, it’s not that memorable and instantly in the auto queue afterwards there was a cover of Valerie by them which was like… way better then anything in that album. Made me a lil disappointed
Not really my type of rock, so this album felt a bit bland,
EVERY BRITISH POP/ROCK BAND DOES NOT NEED TO BE ON THIS LIST. This is all over the place, some songs are punk-ish some are folk, some are jazzy. But in the end it sounds like every other early 2000s hipster band.
I like Pressure Point. That's it.
Okay album I guess? Listened to it yesterday and once again cannot remember it.
Not to my taste.
Not terrible but also not really something that's worthy of this list.
Just sort of noise more than music, a bunch of atoms bouncing around off each other. Or are they sound waves? Either way, it's just some random wiggly air, nothing to get excited about.
Forgettable
Well, I started listening to this and thought, not bad! Will it be one I save to come back to? No. but at least it was an easy listen, and didn't make my ears bleed!
idk just feels derivative of like the beatles and the doors. don’t really do anything new/groundbreaking and just was an album i made it through
Another English band that I’ve never heard of. Awesome! Too many of these on this list, so maybe I went into this with some inherent bias based on the last 5+ I’ve listened to that weren’t that good. Let’s start at the beginning. Calling your band The Zutons, naming your album Who Killed The Zutons?, and then starting that record with a song called Zuton Fever? Trying to be cheeky? Making a statement? Whatever the intent, it failed. Bad song, and it barely got marginally better from there. At least I can say this, unlike the last few of these bands I listened to, the lead singer has an interesting/good voice. The band is pretty good too. Unfortunately, the song construction is terrible. Too many songs about nothing, that are aimless, with bad choruses, or all three. Havana Gang Brawl is a perfect example. When this started, I thought “finally something I can get into” only for the chorus to come up and deliver…nothing but repetition. So, Who Killed The Zutons? Sadly, no one fast enough. Anyone with a (much) quicker trigger would have sufficed. Instead, no one did the job and we ended up being stuck listening to this album. I will give a second star to this though, solely because they managed to hurdle the very low bar that is the other no-name English bands I’ve already listened to, and lumping them in with those others seems wrong.
Pretty poor. Uninventive indie rock
Another album who’s sole legacy seems to be soundtracking channel 4 mid 2000s cooking documentaries
I wanted this to be so good but it just… wasn’t
Gave it a shot
I might be underrating this one as it seems like there would be more things to pick up on with repeat listens. At times jazzy, funky, blusey. It was all over the place, which should have worked for me, but somehow didn’t.
Pretty mid indie rock.Good guitars. Pretty melodies on some tracks. But overall, nothing exciting.Liked the songs Pressure Point and Not a Lot to Do.
I prefer The Coral
Both this band name and album art work seemed vaguely familiar to me and I see it was released while I was at university, so I was curious to see if I recognized any of it at all. I did not at all, and this is entirely not what I was expecting. I have no idea what this is supposed to be. Was there some period of time where the Brits were super in to weird jangly pop dance music? This sounds like someone doing their best Jack White impression trying to make jangly dance revival music. It's not bad, it's just more "What?"
Whatever
-idk it’s definitely not bad. just doesn’t really… go anywhere or do anything? the sound is a bit hard to categorize and so is the overall purpose and direction of the album -had some decent songs at the beginning but honestly after that idk what to say -Favorites are Zuton Fever and You Will You Won’t
it wasnt me
There’s nothing bad about this, but it has no ambition at all so that’s not really impressive.
I forgot about this record WHILE IT WAS PLAYING. That's how unmemorable it is.
Couple of goodies.
This was fine. I don’t really understand Britains obsession with ska/ska-adjacent music tbh. I didn’t dislike this album, but it struck me as something I’d put on once when it first released and then never listen to again. Fun band name/album artwork though. Don’t really understand why it’s on the list.
Has some nice moments, but extremely forgettable overall.
I have no idea how to describe this album. It's weird.
I might have liked this album for about a month in 2004. But someone would have had to burn it for me. I wouldn't have spent money on it. There's no great, or even better than good, song on here to hook you. It also lacks cohesion.
This was fine, but I don't really understand why it made the list? I have to say, I'd never listen to this one again...
I will be honest, I came to this ready to slate it. And I was right to. I have just come off listening to Elton John's Madman Across the Water and the Zutons are comparatively a baffling inclusion on this list. I remember this album being released and being certain that they would sink without trace. Certainly they deserve to. As it is, they are not quite the indie soft rock I was expecting, a couple of interesting instruments, like the mouth harp and saxophone, and You Will You Won't was a bit of an earworm. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with this, but overall it's the very example of forgettable and a dud choice for the list, although I will concede that it's a very good example of the landfill indie which was so popular in the early 2000s.
This was astonishingly unmemorable. Never heard of them before and will likely never hear of them again but this bears a whiff off DEI for white guys playing guitar-based music in the 21st Century.
Surprised it made list. Seems like better albums in this genre. Not bad per se, but nothing special. Don’t see myself revisiting
Who ate the croutons? Who has the coupons? Where's my Gray Poupon?
Couldn’t quite crack if this was earnest or ironic. Not that it ultimately mattered but it seemed to veer from rock to novelty at the drop of a hat. 2.5/5
Not bad, not something I plan to ever listen to again
Perfectly fine but I could have died never hearing this and I won't remember that I've listened to it this time next week
the zzzutons really aren't doing it for me. total snoozzzefest. who killed them? i'm starting to think they did it to themselves... favorites: zuton fever, you will you won't
The Zutons? This album just about did me in.
Sad Saxophone Honks 😔
I think the best the Zutons gave us will always be the original Valerie. And even then it's better when Amy sings it.
Matig garage album. Hoort hier echt wel niet thuis. 2.4
(If) I Did It
This is dumb
It’s radio-bothering noughties indie dross really. The sort of thing you’d grab at the supermarket while buying the proverbial meat and potatoes, but I confess a soft spot for scouse bands with psychedelia running through their veins and influences up and down their sleeves. Two.
Quite forgettable
Fine. Not a lot to say about it. Is this the band Amy Winehouse sampled? Either way, her version is better.
Killed but not dead enough
Who?
The Zutons?
This reminds me a lot of the White Stripes in some ways, especially in the first few songs. It is also much different, what with use of horns and such--stuff that departs from your average rock trio. It's pretty good, from an era that I don't know much about and mostly hate the rock I do know about, at least for the first half. It gets a little on the cheesy side on the B-side of the album. Not sure how well the country crooner elements work, for example, in the last track.
Pretty generic… not sure why this is one of the albums I must listen to before I die
Nothing much to say really.
Some OK moments, but the whole thing doesn’t really cut the mustard.
They probably think they were born in the wrong generation, but they would have been mediocre then too. They need a hit to drive this to a 3 for me.
light, insubstantial, inessential
5/10 Aggressively boring
Not something that I would run to buy, but it has one or two moments.
I have never heard The Zutons and I knew exactly what this would sound like. 1.85
MID
Mæhhh
This album is fine. I don't think it's bad, but it also doesn't do anything for me, personally. I hate to give it less than 3 stars, because there is a lot of talent in the songwriting, but I feel it would be disingenuous to give it more than 2 stars, since I really didn't personally connect with it, and I don't think it doesn't anything terribly special. It just feels okay.
Man what a snooze fest
Utter rubbish….pressure was the only song I mildly enjoyed. The rest was a bunch of blaaaaa
Some reasonable tunes but they don't resonate with me.
Ich habe nichts gegen wilde Mischungen. Da kann ein neuer Geschmack entstehen. Der hier ist für mich eher ungenießbar.
Uk rock, allerede glemt igen
Who Killed The Zutons? Probably me, for having to listen to such a sinfully boring album, it's every possible shade of bland, grey, dull, nothingness. Escapes the 1/5 I reserve for actually bad music but scarcely. Can only imagine the author of the book had a teenage hard-on for scandalously unoriginal British indie crap, and it's not even indie.
Bog standard 00s indie, doesn't compete particularly well with its peers let alone the best albums of all time. No idea why this is on here vs. Foo Fighters of that era, Bloc Party etc. etc. 2/5, nothing particularly wrong with it but nothing interesting at all.
Apple Store indie (derogatory).
altern. Rock, 2004 -> 2
Meh, unremarkable, don't really care about this at all
- Favs while listening to the album: Confusion, Railroad, Not a Lot to Do - Pressure Point is really catchy and has simple call and response vocals; love how chaotic it gets in the end - I like the guitar licks they’re pretty tasty - Confusion very much reminds me (mostly the drum part) of the Beatles - it has sort of a Ringo-Feel to it - but i think its cool how unpredictable lots of the songs are as well as mixing different genres - the sax usually really stands out but in Not A Lot To Do it blends in and is in such a good balance with the other instruments - I’ve come to the conclusion that its not really my cup of tea - a few elements i like but there’s just nothing that would bring me back to this i guess; its not a bad album though just not my taste; also I don’t like this type of rock, it reminds me of Arctic Monkeys (despise their music) - i hate to say this but their songs start off good most of the time but during the middle and end, they somehow annoy me a little :/ - i feel like either you like it or you don’t, there’s no in between OVERALL: 2/5
Who picked...... this album? It's a weird one, and not the kind of weird that I seek out. It's got a bit of a theatrical edge, like Tom Waits or Panic at the Disco or something, other than that it's just some alt-rock stuff. Have we had multiple Zuton albums? If so, someone should stand trial. Favorite tracks: Zuton Fever, Nightmare Part II. Album art: It's got that vintage Vaudeville feeling, the guy with the mustache about sums it up. Not a bad cover honestly, but the desaturation is frustrating. 2/5
Garage Rock being messy throughout generes Feeling Like ITS falling apartt with some fun parts (alternative riffs like a spring sound, some lines being catchy).
This album was fine but I just don't understand how it made the list. It's only my second "modern" album I've gotten, and it's just sortof a fun college radio listen. Not a big fan of the singer, but the instrumentation is good (love all the sax). I generally liked it but I just don't understand how I'm supposed to compare it to Rolling Stones and Ray Charles... 2.4/5 Listening notes: Fun opening track Oh hmm "Pressure Point" ok I think I've heard this on the radio - pretty good meh Confusion - nice, like the sax The instrumentation on this album is quite good, unfortunately the singer's voice annoys me just a bit
Not in my edition of the book! 2004. 2 stars. Well done but average band produces well done but average music. Why is this on the list?
Pretty Boring
I'd only heard Valerie before this. It started off strongly but it seems like they ran out of ideas.
Fun. A little forgettable but nothing wrong with it. Coral-light?
Why? I have a feeling that even fans of this band wouldn't think that it belongs on this list.
Not sure why it's on the list
Sadly they couldn’t save themselves from middling rock (2.5/5)
Not special enough for this list. Adequate guitar pop-rock but unexceptional.
Entertaining aughts indie that occasionally touches on a few unique genres for flavor. It's neat but doesn't really feel essential enough to justify its inclusion here, especially with its clear heavy influence from The Coral.
Not my thing, wasn't terrible but didn't enjoy it at all really.
nah
o som é bem estranho, guitarra legal, voz muitas vezes rasgada.
Very campy. Not really something I would listen to on a regular basis.
Completely forgettable middle of the road indie
Who killed the Futons? Those bloody saxophones. So annoying. Ruined the record.
Meh
🤷🏻♂️
Very mid - level. Just bored me a bit to be honest.
Ok
Its better than a lot of scouse rock as it snot too scouse. But its still mediocre enough to wonder why its on the list
This started off okay, and bits of it sounded like CAN (but with Bono singing). This album is a mess and I have no idea who The Zutons are, as it changes style from one song to the next. Too much of a mixed bag for me to enjoy or focus on for very long.
This did my nut in, tbh. The screeching guitars were matched by a bloody screeching voice. It picks up with a Scally twang. But I'd rather listen to The Coral.
Best known for “Valerie,” if you know them for anything at all (a song that these days definitively belongs to Amy Winehouse), the Zutons were part of a glut of British alt rock bands in the early 2000s—and not a very memorable one. Too concerned with being clever at the expense of Melody and meter.
Forgettable dad rock
Pretty skippable.
Generic unoriginal indie-pop that doesn't strike a chord or do anything totally original to merit inclusion on this list. "Who Killed...... The Zutons? is the debut studio album by the English rock band…" Oh, say no more. 2.5/5
Not much to distinguish the Zutons above the other bands in a similar vein.
Love the cover, not so much the music.
Meh
Could've dropped this album in the 70s and it would be right at home. Quite boring, nothing new introduced. Not quite sure why it was on this list tbh with you there are much better british indie albums around this time that deserved a spot more.
