The Specials
The SpecialsSka baby! Debut album produced by Declan. As good as it gets. And what it begat…the opening of the door for other great ska acts. Rudy didn’t fail.

Classic. The Who was my first Rock concert shortly after Keith Moon passed and they’re in my pantheon. Ox’s “My Wife” hit home and always brings a smile.
Just all sounds the same…I do like Sabotage though.
No you don’t. Wish I hadn’t heard you.
There was one song I liked on this album and after listening to the entire album, I can’t remember it…
Liked it enough to possibly explore other Mekons music…couldn’t put my finger on who the singer(s) voice reminded me of…
Enjoyed this a lot…Bossa Nova’s kick off in the states…this is great music to end a night or listen to at a brunch spot…I’m pretty sure I’ve heard some of these tracks in restaurants. Getz’s sax & Byrd’s guitar were great together…and it hinted at one of my favorites, “The Girl from Ipanema”, which would hit 2 years later.
Did not disappoint. Been a fan for only about 15 years or so. Wish I had got on board before. Album started with my kinda banger. Closer is one that will continue to grow on me. And everything in between, Mr. Cage & Seeds put on a good show. Love his voice. And he’s one of the good guys.
Another band that’s been hanging on my periphery…besides “Do You Realize”, hadn’t heard any of their music. If the rest of their catalog is like this I could pay more attention. Evolved Psychedelic sound makes it work.
I’ve listened to this album too many times to count…and mostly against my will. It’s a good album, I just do not need to hear it ever again.
Recording almost makes me think I’m in the audience. Classic Blues, guitar, horns and B.B. vocals rate this 5. Blues but joyful!
Always liked everything thing I’ve ever heard by her. She recorded this album when she was 45. Living made this a good album.
This album brings back great memories. Was a big part of my high school sound track. Every party, car and radio had one of these songs playing at some point. Great combo Meat & Jim.
Another favorite from the past! Elvis & the boys go into a different gear with this one. Smooth and mature.
Whoa…could’ve been one really long song. Picture a 90s movie with the hero/killer riding the subway at night kind of music.
Like this better now than when I heard it all those years ago. Still it seems a bit repetitive. It did inspire many though so that’s a good thing…
Mingus was always just a name to me…now I know more about him after listening. I appreciate the effort and can understand why he’s a big jazzy deal but…maybe.
“Alone Again Or” has been a an earliest memory favorite song. Way back with that song. Album makes me think of So Cal in the sixties. An album for its time.
In a decade of great live albums, Budokan is one of the greatest. Screaming Japanese fans who finally let it out after sitting on their hands during Beatlemania, Bun E.’s great drumming, Robin’s voice, Rick’s guitar and Tom’s seventies bass made me a big big fan. Part of the soundtrack of my existence. And one of the greatest Fats covers ever.
It took me a long time to become a Zeppelin fan. Between the allegations of outright theft of early bluesmans’ songs to the creation of the English 70s heavy metal full of themselves prototype, they were tough to like. And after all these years IV still remains the same, a greatest hits album.
Jeff, Ron & Rod (and a drummer & bass player) making a great noise. Blues that became hard. Beck was already a legend and it showed. Rod too. Got to see Beck a few times towards the end it he was in great form.
Not much has changed since this album debuted years ago. Urgency of the lyrics still resonate today. Deserves the accolades from yesterday & today.
Punk history made with this album…and I had never heard of it. Early New Wave…” New Wave” is actually part of the lyrics in a few of the songs. I like it for the history. It’s a bit repetitive but so was a lot of early Punk. Punk could only got better after this album. And I mean that in a good way. Gaye Advert should be more well known. There’s a couple of good bangers on this albums. And like most albums, the more I listen, the more I like..
I enjoyed listening to this album for all the right reasons…the most important being Dolly. Her favorite song she ever wrote was the title song. A great example of real life's inspiration. Lots of “Momma” in this album. She is a living legend.
This album is the beginning of Lou Reed the solo artist. A departure from the NY Velvet sound of the first 2 albums, it’s a completely different direction. Lou Fucking Reed.
Album from the Church of The Rolling Stones. No band better when it comes to using blues, gospel and rock & roll to make great music. The positives and negatives of making this album are legendary. A top 5 Stones album with Richard’s best Stones (solo) song. This album makes me Happy.
The beginning of the King. One can imagine listening to this album in 1956 and having one’s 1950’s mind blown. I know my Mother did…lots of memories for me of her fandom for the King. So I became a fan too.
I had forgotten this album existed…listened, and will forget.
Bollywood at its best? Some catchy tunes but what do I know?
Wish I had known about this band when they hit the scene. Got a So. Cal 70’s sound…Pete Best referenced in the lyrics! Most of the songs gave me a…thrill.
Which One’s Pink? Good stuff…Part of the Canon.
Walk This Way & Sweet Emotion are 70s anthems. Rest of the album can stay in the attic
Heard of the band but never the music. Wish it could’ve stayed that way. Band is named for the town in England that one of band is from…too bad it wasn’t the town of Shitterton. An album that gives and sounds like a headache. Where’s the aspirin?
Impressive music from someone I was only aware of in name only…glad this one popped up. King of the Afrobeat! If not for reading background on Fela, I wouldn’t have realized this was a protest album while listening. And a good one at that…He paid a terrible price for this album…and it didn’t stop him from making important music.
Except for this site I usually stay clear of Electronica & then this popped up. Not a big fan but I get it…get it…get it…over & over & over. Setting Sun had a Beatles / Lennon Tomorrow Never Knows vibe, so it’s got that going for it.
Loved the song when it came out, my innocent self didn’t really know what it was all about until a few years after. Still grooving to it today along with most of the rest of the album. Curtis was genius.
Not enough Stars to rate this album…the songs from this movie Boomed my young little mind 5 years or so after it came out.…then I started buying albums as I got older & Boom all over again. It’s Fab.
Another 90s Band I knew only for the name. Apologies, I was busy. It only took about 30 years to listen for the first time and way better late than never. I recently became aware that Jarvis was a big deal in Britain but I didn’t connect him to Pulp. Again I apologize. This is a very good album. Lyrics, music & voice make it so for me. Just about every song I can easily listen to again …and again.
Yea baby! This guy doesn’t give a #%$&. Never disappoints and a true original.
This was a tough one…pass.
Title track saves the day…rest is ok. A couple more classics on the horizon for the Temps but they were nearing the end. Big part of music history.
I’d like my hour and change back please. I was not going to rate any album less than a 2, but for this I’ll make an exception. This album did make me want to dance…out of da club and into traffic.
There was one song I liked on this album and after listening to the entire album, I can’t remember it…
No idea this band ever existed…not overly impressed but glad I had a listen. Turns out my kids like this band. I’m sure if I listened again the songs might sound a bit more distinctive but who’s got time for that? I’m busy…got 900 plus more albums to hear, here.
If a big fan of duos that may be or may not be married and or brother and sister this is the album for you. Juvenile but catchy songs… the kind that a comedian might use as a theme song for a podcast.
Skepta doing his thing. And I could care less.
Suddenly have the urge to buy some crystals and incense. Then pop a video cassette of Risky Business into the Betamax.
Kanye had a hand in this before he lost his mind. Had some other heavy hitters on this album…I’ve got nothing in common with his music. Ok actor though.
Scratch… scratch…scratch this.
Top 40 Soft Rock 70s…memories of the 2 hits playing throughout the decade. Definitely talented & a tragedy years later. Lots of covers including Help. It’s a shame Karen couldn’t get enough…help.
I’m about to be MIA from this site. I know I’m not going to like everything but this has been some run…ouch.
And I’ll accept the charges. Game changers.
Not
Almost a Tonk…liked the covers.
Radio Free Europe was the first song that made me take real notice all those years ago. This album was the first of a great progression. Been a fan ever since.
Neil & Crazy Horse…I hadn’t listened in years to this album…My My & Hey Hey never disappoint…hadn’t listened to the in between in years…good ol’ Neil!
Royalty…
…If XMAS was a horror show featuring congested elves on a boat that overstayed it's welcome…
Maybe my favorite Bowie persona…and there’s a lot to choose from…his music never disappointed. His music was ever-changing. This & all his albums rate a 5 plus. Roy Bittan on piano was something I missed first time around. TWD knew how to pick’em!
Liked the hits on this album when I first heard 'em and always thought I’ll give a deeper listen one of these days…20 years later…
Started out promising…then it didn’t. Is this an album of 12 tracks of the same song and maybe 2 others that are different? Disappointed.
Definitely a record that sounds like 30 plus years ago. That’s not a bad thing or a good thing, just not my thing. Lyric sampling Beatle George was unexpected & appreciated. Great name for a band.
This album and especially Sultans made a big impression when it came out in 78. Made me a fan for life. The sound to me was unique and Knopfler still amazes to this day.
Had to dig a bit to find the actual album. Definitely not something I would listen to by choice…but for a once in a lifetime listen, it was ok.
2 albums in a row now that I had to go into the weeds to find & listen. Never heard of Orbit. Now I have…beep beep boop bleep. Catchy stuff.
Dre hitting it out of the park with Snoop. Quite the sing along album. I know more about his success than I should. Saw the specials and movies etc. Dr. knows how to operate.
This is an album that matters. Love me some Pogues.
A-ha! Now I know two Norwegian bands…it only took 40 years. This one is not my cup of nype-te.
If it’s from the late 90s, the music put me to sleep. For an album with 8 singles released, I recognized 1. Must’ve been a deep sleep.
No you don’t. Wish I hadn’t heard you.
I like Irish Punk(s) music. I had forgotten this band, glad it popped up today I’m going to enjoy them all over again and hopefully not forget them all over again.
Saw Green Day 3 times while they were supporting this album. Great shows. Good album. So good nothing they’ve done since has come close…or they just made enough $ from this and everything it spawned not to have to… they’re no Idiots.
I couldn’t name or recognize a Linkin Park song, even if I was told “this is a Linkin Park, song.” It all sounds the same…But I appreciate the effort. They’re another band with a departed soul. And that’s very sad.
Hmmm…The Darkness. Rang a distant bell. Gave this a listen, wasn’t bad, wasn’t great. These funny guys were just too late. This is a solid 2.5…I’ll round up to 3 for their nostalgia.
I’m hearing Roxy…Eno…and others through out this album. I could listen to this album as the last music of the day.
The album that launched a thousand bands. A good start…this band should’ve been BIG.
This is a new one for me. First song sounds like a country song done by a talented hipster. The rest of ‘em, modern funeral dirges. Apt title for this album.
Wu Tang & Staten Island, a lot going on…at the least, I now know how to get to Heart Street. For a first & probably last listen, it could’ve been worse.
Never heard any of this band, album or saw this film. I’m halfway now and that’s where I’m going to stay.
Second Straits album to pop up on this list. No complaints here. Still a great album.
Electric guitars go a long way. Made it an ok listen for this record. Was not aware of the Rod Stewart connection / controversy…bit of a stretch methinks…Wish I hadn’t read the Wiki summary while listening to see if I would have picked up on my own. Still, Play that funky music Brazilian Garoto!
Going back in time with the Duke! A very good live album.
Great album…first time listening to the entire album. I knew the hits but the rest was fresh. This is what all music should make one feel.
Familiar with a few songs, none of which are from this album. There’s quite a pedigree behind this album. Groovy Psychedelic stuff.
Another psychedelic groovy album. Would’ve loved to be an age in the sixties to appreciate it in real time. Would’ve been an amazing trip if Syd kept it together
Heavy Metal…it has its moment(s) for me as does this album…but I’m not going to add it to my playlists any time soon. Much respect to Halford.
Yes…No. I’ve lived my life without having to listen to one of their albums in it’s entirety. And now I have. Was Roundabout always 8 minutes? I never could listen to that entire thing. Long songs, short songs, it’s like riding a roller coaster in a crappy amusement park. Getting older may have mellowed my opinion of YES though…I still dislike them, but not as much.
This is a never heard of her before album. Liked the beats and her accent made the lyrics go down a bit smoother.
Only knew “Family Affair” off of this album and always liked it along with his other hits. Cool album which snapshots the era it was produced.
Another Hip Hop Rap album interspersed with skits etc that sounds repetitive and been way overdone. “My Name is”…I’d like to forget.
I really started enjoying the late great John Prine about 5 years ago. Wish I had paid attention much earlier. A great debut album. Songwriter excellence. Love his lyrics from the first album all the way through to his last one. Great music. He is missed. $&@% Covid!
Bouncy stuff.
I blame my beautiful boy being born for missing this band & album back in ‘89…but that’s ok. This album would have been a big part of my musical life.so now it will be. Great stuff.
My favorite Icelandic singer. Human Behaviour is an obvious hit. Didn’t Madonna go through a Bjork phase?
First time listening to this in its entirety. Always been a Byrds fan. Rightfully a psychedelic kickoff to another period of time & music that I was born too late to experience firsthand. Bummer man.
Nearly 10% into this “project” and approx 15% of the albums/bands I’ve never heard of..and here’s another one. I’ve only liked 2 or 3 of them so far. So in theory, I may listen to 150-175 albums/bands I’ve never heard and only like around 30. And this one ain’t one of them
This album was one of the first cassettes I ever owned…I wonder if it is still around here somewhere? Great groove…an album that can play in front or in the back ground. One of those that take me back. Grandy & Rockfish.
A welcome return from one of the best bands out there. Kicked off a great run of albums after this and the tours to support them. Have a great trip…U2
Another never heard of album / band. The Apple Music version seems to be missing a few tracks, no complaints here. Still, for a genre I’m not a fan of, this wasn’t a bad once in a lifetime listen.
Finally…An album that represents the mid 90s Welsh movement! Whatever that is. Screw this deluxe version…I only listened to what I hope was the originally released first disc. More of this deluxe version and I’ll go down into a welsh coal mine and never come back.
First listen to this First Album. Drips with lots of Talent. Was familiar with her as her flame was burning at its hottest, and then burnt out. A terrible end and addition to the tragic 27 year old and done club.
Another new one for me. I like it but not enough to listen to the whole deluxe album version. Someday maybe? I noticed some vague Joy Division similarities, both bands formed in ‘76, so maybe?
Scoobie scoobie do…cuckoo doobie…. Chairman of the bored…the cat's a legend.
This is a helluva debut album. Three solid hits. I’ve come to appreciate Steely more as I was reelin’ in the years.
I knew this album was a big deal when it came out, didn’t care to listen. She’s definitely talented & I enjoyed this listen…I doubt I’ll ever listen again unless it’s by someone else’s doing.
This is one of those albums that I gave a chance to it because a girlfriend loved it. Glad I did. Lyrics and music bring back some great memories.
Is Sade a solo act? A Group? Whatever, she’s one smooth mechanic.
Other than the name, I didn’t know if she was a he or a group or a clothing store. I knew zero about PJ Harvey. Sounds a tiny bit like a female Lou Reed on this album.
This was an interesting listen. Another band I never heard of and probably should have. Fan of the era and would have probably followed for awhile.
Couldn’t find the entire album and could only listen to the title track & bottle. Smooth Cat with a conscious.
Title song is probably my favorite Fleetwood Mac song. I’m a fan of Lindsey Buckingham which is probably why I like this album a tad more than their others. Band’s music has been in the soundtrack of my life since the 70s. RIP Christine.
Great Album. Ian Hunter is underrated. One of the best, most identifiable voices in Rock. Big fan of his solo work. Saw the “reunion” show a few years ago and it was fantastic. These songs remind me of what it could of been if I was a few years older when this was released. Mandolin on “ I Wish I Was Your Mother”…now that’s Glam!
A toe tappin’ sing along! A reminder of gentler days! I hope all the evangelicals get a chance to listen to this…they will be reborn again!
Heard of ‘em but that was it. Now I’ve listened. Hearing lots of different influences. I wouldn’t turn this off.
Straight to whatever the point was…these guys and this album is muy importante. Gabba Gabba Great
Love his Southern accent he acquired being born in Hollywood CA. He’s one talented faux redneck. Lots of heavy hitters on this album. And it sounds like it. Good stuff.
This was exhausting. Lyrics are revelatory. Music made it one long dirge. Categorizing as industrial rock is dead on because this is a tough job to listen to… Johnny Cash’s later cover of “Hurt” has always been a favorite.
Classic. The Who was my first Rock concert shortly after Keith Moon passed and they’re in my pantheon. Ox’s “My Wife” hit home and always brings a smile.
This was a tough listen. The less said about it the better.
The second collaboration of these two Giants…“Everything That Happens Will Happen Today” is one of my favorite albums. And without this one it could not have been. Interestingly listening to it in the background does make sense. And one of the better titled albums.
Once & Done. Guy got Rich.
Another one totally off my radar. I must've been busy in the nineties. Album certainly was…I should possibly maybe listen to more from these guys.
My history for this exercise shows I’ve listened to 37 different albums across the hip hop genre and its different permutations…and I’m not a fan. After listening to this album, I’m still not a fan.
Brazilian Heavy Thrash Death Metal…didn’t see this coming. If one was a fan this might be a good one. Nope.
Just about a perfect record. The title song being a great song and aptly named for what was their last album. Simon carried on, breaking new ground making fantastic music. Garfunkel not so much. The occasional reunion concerts were much appreciated.
I knew the name of this band from hearing the name years ago and thought, cool naming after a literary character. I knew nothing about their music. And now I know what shoe gazing means. Not a bad listen.
Back in the mid 90’s my brother in-law recommended this album to me thinking I would dig it. I did, just not enough. The Beatle wannabes had something, just not enough of it. After a fresh listen & knowing all about the Gallagher bros fussing & fighting, I like this album a bit more than I did way back when.
Wondering if there’s some sort of glitch with this exercise and albums from the 3003 albums are popping up. Not a big fan of the San Diego music scene but everyone needs to start somewhere. Album sounds a bit like one loooong repetitive song.
Took me a long time to appreciate Zeppelin. That’s all I’m going to say…
This was a tough one to review…
Chef’s second album on this list! The title song is one of the coolest movie theme songs ever made. Playing over the opening credits, it’s iconic & unforgettable. The rest of the album ain’t bad either.
Ya Mon! It was lit and should’ve burned longer. Classic sound.
All I knew about this band, the Icelandic B-52s, was that it launched Bjork…this was a fun listen.
I’ve appreciated Steely Dan more with each passing year. A good middle of the road effort.
15 songs, in 35 minutes. Made this listen tolerable. All I ever knew about Black Flag was Henry Rollins had something to do with them. I knew him more as an actor & now know why he likes to chew the scenery. On the plus side, all I’ve go left to do is have a brew .
Starting with the cover shot of a swinging joyful Fred Flintstone look alike, I enjoyed this album. I knew quite a few of these songs and it was fun to hear them again.
Listening to this record one can hear what’s to come next in rock & roll…the brothers were an obvious influences to the many…
I’m going to have to up my percentage of albums / artists I’ve never heard of before…this was painful. Listening to this might be what it feels like to drown. There was not even one song that could’ve been thrown as a lifesaver to make this worthwhile.
Another Great Founding Father of Rock & Roll…and another hard to find album. So hard to find I did the next best thing and bounced around his catalog. All great songs that seemed somewhat interchangeable… “Blue Monday I’m Walking on Blueberry Hill”…
Always liked the Hits from this record…and now I know which came 1st, the Killers or the Strokes? Easy to remember now, a stroke can kill you. I like this album, if I was younger when this came out I’d be a hardcore fan. Is this it? Could’ve been.
RIP Steve…Without him way back the music landscape would’ve been a bit boring.
Familiar with the name and other than the car advert, didn’t know much more…this is a fantastic album. Bittersweet after learning the story of his tragic short existence. Again, this is a fantastic album.
Hip Hop is always going to be a tough listen for me. But…I stuck it out & appreciate this effort. Wu Tang is a lot & this guy is a lot of it, at least 1/9. As close to a mellow Rap album I’ve ever listened to, not the stereotypical hardcore Hip Hop…maybe if I turned it up. Out the top 5 favorite Hip Hop albums I like, which are none, this might make the list.
This is the album that made me a fan all those years ago. A sound all their own. Vocals & lyrics hit just about perfectly. Great live band as well. Entertaining.
Now known as Sir Rod, this album goes way back to the Rooster days. A distinctive voice surrounded with excellent musicians performing originals and covers, this album was a harbinger of a massive career to come.
My topper most of the popper most favorite band. One of my top 3 Beatles albums, containing my topper most of the popper most favorite Beatle song. The title of which I’m going to keep to myself so you’ll have to guess…
Again I was busy in the 90’s. Missed and never heard, or forgotten some arguably great music. To be great or at the least good, I’ve got to want to listen again & again. This does sound like an album made by kids. So from the 1st track to the next to last track it felt like the same song over & over again. And then finishing with what I guess is a recorded monotonous rain/storm to break the mood of the previous monotonous song(s)…I’m done & don’t have to ever listen again.
Great version of “Summertime Blues”. Considered possibly the 1st Heavy Metal Band? Cool. Heavy and Bluesy. I’d even write it was educational.
Another aware of the name but not the music album…lots going on which in this case is ok. Just once I’d like my preconceived notions to be right…but not today. I liked this album, I could listen again with it in the background.
Good album. Signature sound. Great guitar. Biggest hit. Solid. Another Tortured Soul.
A good debut album. Mellow, Moody, Cold…Play
Juicy Noise. Like it
“Brender’s” favorite album. Big album for a big talent. Another album for it’s time.
These blokes don’t get the credit they deserve. Saw them this year on a double bill with Squeeze and a good time was had by all. This album sounds as good today as it did when it popped.
It only took 6 albums for Prince to get a # 1 album. Game changing. Nothing like it then and now. An original artist a with sound all his own. And it kept pouring…
Other than recognizing the name I knew nothing about her or her music until listening to this album. I like it. She sings and writes Hippy Country Music.
Was wondering when the Doors would show up…can’t overrate this band. A singular voice that is deeply missed. Another club 27 member.
A Scottish Synth 2013 Synth album…first reaction was this could be an 80’s album. Definitely influenced by the years between 1970 & 1990. Liked what I heard but I’m not going to this church anytime soon.
Another knew the name but none of the music…and not even 1/3 through the first song & I wish that were still true. I would think I would’ve liked this but…a bit too ethereal for my tastes.
The fussin’ & fighting Robinson brothers carry on the tradition of Southern rock & blues born from the Allman Brothers etc. A great debut album with a shared sound & a uniquely original sound.
The algorithm that whirs these daily selections is cuckoo. Another Yes album. No. Trying to write something positive about a Yes album is very tough to do for this listener. This band has always been near the top of the bands I can’t stand. But after years of changing the station or just flat turning them off, they’re not as horrible as I remember. Still near the top of the list but not so fast that I’ll ignore right away.
Leonard Cohen is one of the greats. The Future from a future recording turned me on to him and his entire catalog 30 plus years ago. An original. This album is a joy to listen to in its entirety. A joy in the sense of the wonder of how such a stark album could be so good.
Not a big fan of the boutique.
Beatlemania kicking off. This second album is just joyful. The first penned George song! Love this like I love all of ‘em!
Hey all you hep cats…dig this! You’re now…hip! Good stuff.
Only her 7th studio album and it might be her Pepper! A good listen. I’ve always liked the title song Ray of Light and wasn’t familiar with the rest of the album. Solid effort to reinvent the genre.
Jimi Jimi Jimi! As original as it gets.
Couldn’t name an Anthrax song or album to save my life. Not going to search any of this out but it was a good listen and be able to say “I’ve listened to some of their stuff”. Speedy.
These guys were big…a friend lives by one of them in Nashville & says “great neighbor”. That’s all.
This & Blonde on Blonde are my favorite Dylan albums. And I like a lot of Dylan albums. He’s our Wordsmith Laureate and then some. Every time I listen it could be like I’m listening for the first time. Excellent.
Love this album. Named for the low profile picture but I feel high listening to this album!
Truly an original band. Been diving deep lately and this one always worth it. Yay Ray
I liked the Hit from this album, “Take Me Out” when I heard it 20 years ago. And then I forgot this band. My mistake.
If I were a hip hop rap fan I’d probably really like this…so nope.
Other than Creep from the first album and High and Dry from this album I’m not very familiar with the band musically. I knew Thom as a kook but I’ve changed my mind. Good album and looking forward to paying more attention going forward.
This album reminds me of another band that I can’t recall. This is going to bother me. Oh well. Worth the listen.
I recognize there is talent in Rap…but it’s not for me. I dug Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rappers Delight” way back when it was a new sound but then what followed for rap just sounded the same, repetitive.
A first time listen to the entire album. Knew and always dug the hits man but had no idea how good the rest of this album turned out. Great listen into a time I was too young to really appreciate
One of my favorite band’s album that was just ok. But they’re great.
An original. Lyrics and music that last. The muse of the late 60s, 70s. Not even her best album. Very good. Great backing musicians from Robbie to Cheech & Chong. Tom Scott paints a colorful musical accompaniment. Joni deserves all the accolades.
If I can name 3 of the 4 members of a band it’s a good chance I like ‘em. And I can and I do. Album has a cool vibe to it and despite’s the obvious innuendos the lyrics work.
Add this to the never heard of this album / artist list. Talented enough to get an album deal. Good for her.
A real toe tapper. First time…last time.
If one has to listen to an alt country rock band, one could do worse. Good pedigree.
Heard bits & pieces of this album over the years and liked it. Been a fan since Boys are Back. Another rock & roll star casualty gone too soon. Great voice. Dueling guitars.
One of the greats. A voice that just sings that stereotypical country music sound. Now I just need to find my jug, sit on a log and listen to songs about women being wronged. And forget she was a Trumper.
Happy Birthday James! Thrash metal’s answer to Floyd…A nod to the Wicked Witch’s storm troopers…this is a good listen. A band with probably one of the best Junior tennis playing drummers out there.
Just all sounds the same…I do like Sabotage though.
Trip Hop…not much of a fan for any genre with hop in the name.
Another never heard of this guy / album. Meh…
Second Depeche Mode Album to pop in on this list…and it’s worthy. Six albums in and they were coming into their own. Love their sound.
Only knew the hits for Big Brother because of Joplin’s talent. First time listening to this album and it did not disappoint. A great history lesson of a time that was romanticized but had, like anything & everything, some darkness to come…Joplin’s OD at 27 years old and entry into the 27 Club. Great albeit dated, problematic Crumb cover.
Stiff.
Second Love album to pop up…it works.
Nothing Pretend about this album. From the first time I heard Brass in Pocket & Precious all those years ago I was hooked. Saw Chrissy again with her latest revolving lineup in July ‘24 and they’re not faking it.
Another Pulpy album. Like it, just not as much as Different Class…at least for the time being.
I’m told I’m’ supposed to dig this band. I don’t. I like Alex Chilton as a song by The Replacements. And I like The Replacements. So thanks Big Star for that.
First listen, likey. Fusion…cool. Recorded in one day. That’s one way to make a good album. Think I would like to read his Autobiography.
Late to the Smiths party, I’m glad I finally got there in the late nineties. Lyrics & music that’s instantly recognizable. Stevie & Johnny burned bright, moody & all.
First song has my attention. I’m not sure if I had ever heard any of their music. Not hat I was expecting. All I knew was the band’s name. And Ry Cooder is one of the guitar players! A Zappa buddy! Almost a perfect album for its time. This band could’ve made at least Major.
Perfect debut album by a close to perfect original band. The songs, the personalities, the music and the guitar…Boom!
Not too shabby. I liked it in terms of never heard the entire album so it was a pleasant turn. Kinda like living in a suburb
This was a fun listen. Anytime Ry Cooder is involved with a World Music project is a blast. Ali Farka Toure is one talented musician.
Only familiar with the earlier career hits, I liked listening to this album. Usually can tell it’s the Pet Shop Boys by Tennant’s Voice. Always liked the band name.
No argument here, the man was a genius. Two records here, bombastic big band for the first half and swirling strings for the second half all topped off with his distinctive voice. Great.
What a concept. Symphony & Metallica. Live. 25 years ago. It works very well.
Having owned the greatest hits album I was always a fan of the hits. Never dove really deep into the albums and shame on me. What a good debut album. Too bad the radio edits I listened to way back when lopped off some great intros. But I can hear why, there anre some looong songs on this album. Enjoyed listening to after a long period of not listening.
Know the name but that was about it. Listened and it’s ok.
Again…Jimi, Jimi, Jimi!
"King of Soul", "the Hardest-Working Man in Show Business", "Minister of New Super Heavy Funk", "Godfather of Soul", "Mr. Dynamite", & "Soul Brother No. 1”…yep!
This does not move the needle one bit. One of the “I can’t wait for this to be over so I don’t have to ever listen again” albums.
Never will I ever like this album. My lifelong wish to never have to listen to a Carey album has been ripped away by this $&@#%+€ exercise. Her life certainly has had it’s ups and downs, now in a good place, that bumps this up to a 2.
Right about now…from the first song to the last song I’m in. Goes to show one that repetition can be a good thing when mixed with talent. And the sampling throughout the album makes for a fun guessing / listening game. This could be a 5. I had just recently made the Housemartins connection and that’s cool.
A listening for the historical relevance. Probably would’ve liked this album more when I was younger. But like it I do.
This is one of those albums that I know the band’s name and nothing else before listening. Now that I’ve listened I’m happy to report I haven’t missed a thing. A lot of this sounded the same…annoying.
Interesting record released post JFK, pre-Beatlemania. What that has to do with this I have no idea. Wasn’t familiar at all except the name slightly ringing a bell…Singer’s name or a comic book villain’s name? I don’t know, but I like this album.
Another album where I’ve heard of the band but not familiar with the music. I’m extremely happy to note that I really liked this album. Figures it was their last studio album all those years ago.
A surprisingly good listen. Expected more of a mess but this held my attention. Ms. Love is rock star. Been quiet lately, hoping she’s at peace.
Another Band I’ve never heard of…have I been living under a rock? This is a good, catchy, simple album.
This is a bittersweet heartbreaking album…I believe it was his next to last release. My favorite song “Dancing Out In Space” is so Bowie to me. Sounds new but it’s so his formula. Was so happy for a new release after some years of silence. “Where Are We Now” floors me, making me consider where I am now.
Another one never heard of before. Who are these guys? Droning melodies that sort of sound ok…but can you dance to them?
End credits movie music is what I’m reminded of while listening to most of this album. Which means I stayed to watch the entire movie. That’s usually a good thing. And so’s this album. A couple of clunkers mixed in but that’s ok. Again, another musician I’ve have never heard of…
The Purple Rain one. Musical Genius. I actually had this album in my hands today looking through what’s left of my albums. First 3 songs take one back and still forward. Miss this guy.
Saw R.E.M. early, in a bar, seats away & was hooked for life. Throughout their career there were a few missteps but this album wasn’t one of them. I’m a sucker for a band that includes at least one song an album accompanied by a mandolin. Songs on this album, all polished and unmistakably R.E.M.
I did not like these guys until later in life. There was no way I’d listen to an entire album. I knew the hits but not anything else. I’m finally a fan. And I enjoy the deep cuts because I’m hearing for the first time.
Never have I ever heard of this album / band. This exercise is exposing my experience in listening to music isn’t as worldly as I thought. Never would’ve I listened to this without this popping up. Glad it did. It was a good way to kill about an hour. A Beatles cover is always appreciated. Granted it wasn’t sung in English (Punjabi?) but I still knew the words.
For a quickly put together debut album, this is a good one. Familiar with 3-4 songs from this album, knowing where they were headed, this history lesson was well worth it. Nicky Hopkins! What a great start to a band that loomed large…My first concert was the Who way back in ‘79 after Moon’s death. “Pop-art-meets-maximum-R&B”
First thought was movie music & it turns out this guy has scored a few flicks. And reworked the Bond theme…okay.
Good stuff. New but familiar when first listened years ago.
Very close to a perfect album. No faking’ it on this record.
Great album. One of a kind artist. Bit of a prick but who isn’t? Lou Effin’ Reed!
Not going to listen to this a-hole. Alrighty I listened to some of this album and I still feel the same…he’s an a-hole. Can I give this zero stars?
Grooving Funk. Songs that make you want to move…stellar Sly.
When I first heard this album I was hooked. Uniquely different…true poetry set to music. A renaissance troubadour of his time. Suzanne and Marianne loom large in music’s pantheon of inspirational women in song. This is dopey review but I dig this album
Good debut album. Other than her hits I know none of her other music. That’s all folks.
There’s a reason why I’ve never heard of this album…not good.
Americana Rock & Roll. A sound all their own. Majestic vocals. Great title for an album and a house.
Enjoyed this album…not sure why but I did.
Another album from the time of procreation where I wasn’t paying any attention to anything new. I’d probably like this album a lot if I’d listen again. But until then…meh.
Who needs David? Not Tina & Chris. Good album for a side piece. “Genius of Love” is Genius, love.
New sound of an old sound. Another Star that burned so hot and faded away at 27. Misadventure took away a tremendous talent. Cool album.
Again another album / band first time hearing. I don’t hate it. Don’t love it either. It’s got a sound that was at the time new and interesting. And one of the band members married Keira Knightley. One of the reasons most guys get into music is to get girls and this guy aced it. I might add an extra Star for that. I did.
Nothing to rave about here except this could put me to sleep. Need to remember that.
1962! Always thought it was made in the late fifties or mid sixties. This is a cool album. Their fingerprints are all over music. A very influential record.
This album was released 36 years ago. It took me that long to finally listen. I never had any reason to listen until now. It’s a good album. Obviously it’s the guitar(s) but I can’t help but think most of the songs eventually sound like someone trying hard and then just banging away on the guitars.
First time listening, is the same as last time listening. I’d have to really stretch to lie this album.
A debut album with a sound never heard before…not quite. Original if one doesn’t listen very hard. Years ago I’d trash this album but time bashes on and repetition wins. I finally like this album.
Ska baby! Debut album produced by Declan. As good as it gets. And what it begat…the opening of the door for other great ska acts. Rudy didn’t fail.
Classic beginnings of the band firing on all cylinders. Music that hits one quick. And it would only get better. Not a bad song on this album.
“Turn On Your Love Light” & drop out. Dead live is a perfect recorded example of the times. Groovy.
Very good music for moody kooky silent movies. Just kidding. Jarret is one of the best (so I’ve read) and so is this album (so I’ve heard).
Repetition makes the heart grow fonder…never realized I was a fan until listening to this album. The original bangers.
Every song is close to perfection. And done with flute on some. Winwood’s singular voice is one of the best. I’ve seem Stevie live many times and songs from this album are some of the most popular played. Classic, deserves to be on this list.
Good not great. Never listened to the entire album. And now I have.
Fantastic album. Always delivers on this album. David Byrne can’t do any wrong in my opinion. This music is infectious.
Great title for an album. Original sound but not for this guy. Another album/band never heard before. Oh well.
This album could be a Beastie Boys album if they were from LA & had a bit of talent.
Ambivalent would be the way I feel about this album & band. Didn’t want to like it but some of it I do. Just like their more successful “Breakfast in America”. And for some reason I confuse this band with REO Speedwagon.
Spacerock…who knew? Sad too.
Perfect band name and first album name. And it helps that it’s a great album. Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman and the rest of ‘em spawned a musical genre. Often imitated.
Kickoff for the Foo. With hindsight you can hear how this album lead to all the other Foo albums. Reminders of Nirvana with a sound headed to the future. Dave definitely living the rock & roll life.
What a wonderful voice! Never really listened to Ms. Vaughn until now and this live album blows me away. Wow.
First song is great kick to start this album. And the rest of ‘em are pretty good also. One of the greatest band names out there.
If I had ever heard the Joke I don’t remember. I won’t forget it this time.
First Queen appearance on this list. Aural hints of what’s to come for one of the most original bands. RIP Freddy.
Listened to their first album. “Roxy Music” coincidentally last night and this is definitely a companion album. Saw this past weekend the annual “Rocky Horror Show” stage show which could be some other type of companion piece if any participants had anything to do with either…which they don’t as far as I know. Eno & original play and movie Riff Raff do look alike. Big Roxy Fan.
Can safely write that I’ll never listen to this album again. At least knowingly. Two stars for effort, musically all over the continent.
Another album & band I’ve never heard of…one & done. It was totally forgotten after my first & last listen.
One look at that album cover and you know it’s going to be good. “That Lady” started and the funky seventies came flooding back. And that’s a good kind of flood. Rest of the album makes me wonder why can’t there be more of this funk today. And covers! There may be out there but I’m probably too lazy to find it..
Heard of ‘em but never heard ‘em. So far so good.
Happy? Sad? Boring.
An American album with a World sound. Was hooked years ago on the original familiarity of the music. The South African musicians elevated what already were fantastic songs.
Wish Gram Parsons lasted longer with the Byrds. This album kicked off “Country Rock”, so thank y’all.
Not a big Dead fan, this is probably the album I like the most. Americana like music, an American band. RIP Phil.
Possibly the best Doors album. And the last with the Lizard King still alive.
For some reason I’m going to buy a VW today.
Top 10 album. Always knew & loved the hits but when I first really listened in the 90s I was blown away by the entire album. Revolver, Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper & Smile. Nothing like some healthy competition between legends.
Interesting choice. Interesting lyrics. Another tragic story. But another meh.
Deja Vu…I think I’ve heard this before. Harmony is where it’s at by some of the best.
Here’s hoping they made a lot of money.
This album got worn out by playing so often back in ‘91. Actually it was a CD. A great example of a band reinventing its sound. Not a bad song on the album, I mean CD.
That was much better than what I expected. I expected it to be good but it was great.
Bowie being Bowie. “Heroes”the album and especially the song are masterpieces. Entire album is a revelation. He kept evolving up until his end. Miss him.
Big Richard Thompson fan here. A good rainy day album this is. Thompson still getting it done all these years.
Like ‘em but couldn’t name a single song. Good Dirge like songs.
Another album with some tracks just being short bursts of a minute or less sounds / songs? Alrighty. Songs with a bit more length were ok…
Hearing Alice’s influences throughout the album as well as the influences this album had on others. Good listenable album for “Hard” rock.
From the beginning to “The “End” this is one the greatest debut albums that came out of the sixties. Actually one of the greatest albums overall. Sets the mood for a time that I wish I could have experienced more. The four of them were one on this Album.
Started out sounding a bit like Green Day, then the rest of the album headed towards some originality. Obviously never heard of this band before. I’m a sucker for anything Irish, still…
Simplistically original album.
This was a 16 year old’s perfect album in 1978. It covered all the bases musically and stylishly for that year. Listening now, only the hits still resonate. Rest of the album feels like a bit like filler. I’d go 4 on this now but will give it a 5 because of the strength of the hits and of course Debbie.
My least favorite and least listened to album by Lou ‘effin’ Reed. But I still like it. Always inventive and throwing a lot at the wall kind of music.
An album like this should come out every couple of weeks.
From what I’ve listened to so far and know about this guy’s missteps…no thanks.
A good listen, guy is talented. That’s all folks.
