Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Most songs on here have something to really love, an enjoyable bass line, good drumming or a funky moment with the sax. That being said, most songs also have something I actively dislike, a weird chorus or strange word choices. In the end an oddly enjoyable but middling experience, I really feel like this could have been amazing but falls just short time and time again.
I had this on CD. It was a different time. A lot of this album is 2000s TV advert music. Songs like Pressure Point and You Will You Won't which were definitely radio played singles are incredibly annoying. Confusion is similar but feels more respectable as a song. I don't remember getting much replay value out of most of the other tracks in the middle of the album, but they're definitely less annoying - Railroad is pretty good. Remember Me feels like the standout track to me. This was definitely also an indie radio hit. I like it still I think, but I can't really imagine actively choosing to listen to it now. I don't really know how I feel about this overall. It's not good, but there's some substance, there's different ideas, there's catchy songs. Fave Tracks: Zuton Fever, Railroad, Remember Me 2.8/5
Quite good. I’d really love to give this a 3.5. Never heard of this band, but it’s very unique and really listenable. I’m really kind of struggling with my rating system at the moment, because 3 is “fine” and 4 is “really good,” but there are loads of albums that are just good, you know? So if 3 is a baseline rating of albums I merely don’t dislike, and 4 is the rating for albums that I *really* like, then where do I go with albums like this, where I’d be more than happy to listen to it again, but I more than likely won’t seek it out?
I went into this one expecting the worst, but it turned out just fine. It’s inoffensive and sometimes pretty fun to listen to. I doubt I’ll ever go back to it, but no complaints on hearing this at least once.
A great debut from a fun live band … I liked it, but not sure it’s stood the time test. A solid 3 from me.
Fine but forgettable
Very fun sounding and some great production on the first half but it also feels thematically and lyrically pretty shallow.
I like this more than I expected. There's nothing innovative in it but it has a real charm in how it's done.
Stray Cats vibe
Rock-a-Billy vibe
Day476 - didn’t think i would like it but i did. probably will forget it soon
Could the Zutons have been killed… if they never lived in the first place?
This is objectively solid with some catchy melodies and tight compositions, but the band sounds like they were brewed in a vat to make songs for car commercials and that kinda bothers me. Best song: Pressure Point
Reminds me of the Violent Femmes, just not as good.
Pretty good. Lyrics were a bit too boring/predictable.
sec gespielter, einfacher rock der zum mitwippen anregt. nichts besonderes, aber auch nichts falsch!
2.5
Quite upbeat indie vibe. English band but with more of an American vibe to it.. maybe English indie tends to be more depressing
Listens: 1.5 Standout tracks: Zuton Fever Musically, this album is all over the place. Sometimes it sounds like the Strokes or Arctic Monkeys, sometimes it sounds slightly country. The trumpets or.horn instruments remind me of Cake. After listening to Zuton Fever I was kind of excited that the rest of the album would have that same level of energy but it doesn't quite land for some of the songs. The album is ok. I might listen to it again in the future.
Pressure Point is a great song (mvp baseball '05 anyone?) but I don't understand why this album needs to be on the list
I liked this album quite a bit, especially how varied it is in styles. It's a good early 00s folk/garage rock album, one of the more interesting ones from the early years of the decade. It works good as an album, though no songs really stands out and it is not particularly great album either. It is close to 4 stars but I will stick to 3.
Correct et honnête rock indie, rien à redire et rien à rajouter
It's alright, I guess
3.5
i found this kind of annoying and unimportant
Standard early 2000s indie Rock. Not bad but also not very interesting.
How this album has escaped me is beyond me. Garage/Psych rock. Their influences are worn on their sleeve and done to great effect. The record is well done, I feel like The Zutons would be amazing to see live. I don't really get the comparisons to The Coral, but I was not a fan of them back in the day so I am biased.
Not bad, kind of cool; I liked the first track and was optimistic for the rest, but it got repetitive and a little annoying. Favorite: Zuton Fever
Better than expected, pop-rock, a tight band, accessible, if not catchy music, and ironic humor.
3.5/5
This sounds like almost every Rock band circa 2002-2006. The songs are varied and relatively interesting, but there is nothing super special going on here.
I really liked this back in the day but I don’t know anymore. I’m going to give it a 3.
Une pop multi-instrumentiste qui prend des accents rétro sans pécher par excès.
Very of its time
Another UK-centric entry. Bands like Franz Ferdinand did it better in that era. Enjoyable enough, but not outstanding, 3*
Quite nice! For me nota a 4 to good for a 3. Difficult to decide but at the end I give it a 3.
A little smug and cheeky for me, but I know a lot of people like that.
Could have been worse
Some well crafted songs. I don't consider this essential, but I have no beef with The Zutons.
Zuton Fever 3.4 Pressure Point 3.5 You Will You Won't 3.4 Confusion 3 Havana Gang Brawl 3.2 Railroad 3.4 Long Time Coming 3.2 Nightmare Part II 3.3 Not a Lot to Do 3.3 Remember Me 3.4 Dirty Dancehall 3.5 Moons and Horror Shows 3.3 Score: 3.325
This was entertaining. I enjoyed the saxophone parts throughout.
One of the survivors from the great indie landfill binfire, this is a cut above the Kooks et al. You'll recognise at least a couple of the songs if you're British and around in the early noughties. Classic three stars. But probs not one of the 1001 best albums.
I quite liked it, but didn't feel part of it, if ya get me. I think if I'd seen them live, I'd have had a great time, but listening in my headphones I felt slightly detached and like I wasn't in the gang. Objectively, it's very good.
2.75
I don't know how to describe - it was almost good? I think the sound was promising but the concept and lyrics felt somewhat gimmicky. It didn't really grab me but it didn't offend me either.
This was a nice little throwback! I wasn't that into the Zutons but this was fun enough to listen to.
I remember the first 3 tracks quite well but simultaneously I remember these songs being better. Especially the first two songs. Nightmare part II is pretty cool though, but generally they lack the ‘wow’ factor needed 3/5
Parts of the sound reminded me of The Flobots. A bit of a peppy album, a fun but otherwise kinda of generic album to me. 3.5
Very average
Weirdly it sounds really nostalgic, you can definitely hear like a 70s vibe with this album considering its a naughties record. I actually didn't hate it! A few stand outs for me: - You Will You Won't - Havana Gang Brawl (this track crescendo so good ugh!!) - Nightmare Pt II I might listen to it again as background noise for it is a cohesive album - it sounds good. Put together. Interesting!
Of course this is not per se a bad album. And it is a pleasant, listenable album for sure. But an essential one in the history of pop music? I don't really think so. If you have been of a certain age in 2004 when it came out, you might have a Zutons-formed dent in your musical socialisation. But since they offer nothing that hasn't done been before, while and after they did it, this record would have to be full of exceptional songs or musical performances to merit it anything than a general "ok" rating. Sadly neither the songs nor their performance offer such outstanding qualities and we have a classic example of mid-quality that should not be part of this list in the first place. A record for the private playlist/collection of anyone who likes to entertain this type of indie rock comfort sound but nowhere near a record for the history books.
ekki leiðinlegt og skemmtilegar melódíur hér og þar. svipar til coral sem mér finnst reyndar skemmtilegra. veit ekki hvort ég þurfi meira, held ekki og fær því...
Not terrible. Not great. Another 3. Prob says as much about my mindset as it does this album. It was ok. I didn’t hate listening to it. That is all.
A good album. I like most songs. But I also had a feeling that some singles sound a bit too familiar? Confusion ~= sitting on the dock of the bay? But still a nice album.
I first came across this band by means of the song Valerie as covered by Amy Winehouse (which is fantastic btw). The Zutons performed the original and I listened to another album of their’s which I remember enjoying a fair bit. This album has a lot of components I like, and definitely a few songs but it also felt like they were still trying to find their sound. I also disliked a lot of components and songs. Miss me entirely with “Zuton Fever”. Unless there is some double meaning I am missing I think that’s an unfortunate and misguided way to start an album. Had I not already known this band a little bit that would’ve soured me going in pretty heavily. Mixed bag for sure with this one. Ups and downs even out at a 3. Intrigued, but a little disappointed. Felt like it was missing some direction.
in the wikipedia excerpt, it talks about this album being a form of 'dad-rock'. I didn't really get that sense, it struck me as a more indie-esque album than like old school rock n roll. overall, pleasant to listen to, but wouldn't seek it out again.
A solid album that was pleasant to listen to. Not a whole lot to say about it though. I'm not entirely sure why it's on this list. Maybe if it came out in the 70's or was more influential, but for 2004, it feels like standard dad rock.
I respect whoever's still doing blues rock in the year of our lord 2004. This album is very alternative rock as well though, got some fancy guitar sounds. I t goes straight grab my attention so I'd like to say it is at least not bad. Better than many of their predecessor even. I think this is how blues rock should progress in my mind, it's a fun experience listening to this album. Some melody lines sure sounds familiar but the overall arrangements and instrumental tones and effects are fresh, I think they managed to find the balence between old and new, I very much appreciate this. a solid 3.5/5 but no higher. The late half is surly not as enjoyable as the first part.
Was alright
This was a fun album. I'm not sure how significant it is, but it's pleasant dad rock for us dads that refuse to admit we're not cool and while away our days telling everyone how great Steeley Dan is 3/5
First reaction to seeing this album come up was it shouldn't be on the list. I remember it having its brief moment, but doubt I ever listened to it past 2004 and the Zutons are probably better remembered for Any Winehouse's cover of Valerie than their own releases. However, this was an enjoyable listen with some great singles and not much filler. Still not sure it's a "must hear", but pretty decent nonetheless.
Solid. Nothing stood out but didn't dislike any of it
Seems like Jack White might have been influenced by these guys
The zutons are not dead. The zutons are fun. Everyone like the zutons.
3.5/5
Fine? Pressure point was good and I didn’t know they made the original Valerie that’s cool
3.0 What an absolute mid album. I have zero feelings either way to this. One of those bands/albums that I purposefully ignored and have zero regrets in doing so. Bland 00's garage/folk indie - see the Coral, the Subways, etc.
Mid-2000s British indie rock that seems to merge into one vaguely upbeat, uninteresting sound after the clear stand-out in Pressure Point. There’s a general nice guitar sound, but coupled with uninteresting vocals, lyrics and instrumentation, this doesn’t (and I hate saying this) go anywhere, other than into one ear and out the other. I think I can do without the vast majority of mid-2000s British indie rock, then. America was doing it far, far, better at the same time, anyway.
I thought I had Zuton Fever during the Falklands War. It wasn’t. It was just a bad cold! Still, got me out of there and back in the studio where our real battles were! 3.0
I enjoyed this album.
For what it's worth, the official list this site is based off has expunged this album from your required listening. So, yes, you can die without having listened to this album, but give it a spin anyway because it has some fun tracks that offer a good look at what the modern alternative landscape was in the early 00s. The biggest surprise I had after pulling up this album was finding out these guys are still active! Not just that, but only last year did they return the gesture of covering one of Amy Winehouse's songs ("Back to Black") after she had a huge hit with the Mark Ronson produced "Valerie" nearly 20 years prior. Overall, Who Killed The Zutons is a fun bouncy record that came in the early days of the garage rock revival, but decidedly more polished than a lot of the lofi recordings of other bands you'd find on the same radio lists. Listen to: Pressure Point, Nightmare Part II, Not A Lot To Do, You Will You Won't
February 1, 2025 HL: "Don't Ever Think (Too Much)", "Railroad", "Confusion", "You Will You Won't" Oh, to be a "The" band in the early 2000s... Chalk it up to burnout (this is album 1035/1089), but I was a little cold on this album despite it objectively being solid- and containing much of what I like in rock music (loads of energy, 70s throwbacks, tasteful sax). For some reason the slower songs (e.g. "Railroad") clicked with me easier today
I enjoyed this one a lot actually! I was no all ears to be honest but i will give this album another listens for sure! would go with a (3.5/5.0)
Intelligent Rock
Solid mid range indie album
Kinda interesting, another one i didn't finish but i would go back to it to finish the whole thing
The selection of records chosen because of the UK bias has yet to really yield anything surprisingly good for me. It’s either been offensively bad or bland in some cases, or rather average in others. This album fits better in that latter group. It seems The Zutons are best known for their song Valerie. Famously because it was covered by Amy Winehouse. The term indie rock is actually quite fitting for this. Because I can’t think of anything more unique to describe this. As bland as the genre “indie rock” really is, this record isn’t anything special. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The worst bits of this are probably the more alternative rock based stuff. They are trying to do their best impression of the White Stripes or The Strokes. And compared to most of the revivalist garage rock I’ve heard, it’s not nearly as good. The best cuts are actually the softer, more acoustic ones. They are the ones where the singer’s voice really gets to flourish. I was sort of flipping back and forth throughout the whole listen as to whether I actually enjoyed this. And in the end, I think it’s just alright. There really isn’t anything here I would come back, or that blew me away. But I don’t think it’s a terrible record. Rating: 6/10
It’s a nice enough album but the songs are quite vapid and forgettable. It was like an album of The Coral b-sides
Pretty good
Refreshingly catchy and delightful. Sure a bit derivative and annoying at times but all in all a great time
Somehow these guys made a saxophone out of place the whole album. It had the makings of something pretty solid but kinda felt like it fell flat. Poor drumming, too, though I did like the singing. Who killed the Zutons? Well... themselves. 5/10.
A technically well engineered and produced album. I enjoyed the track "You Will You Won't". While it is a respectable album, I am not convinced that its impact is such that anyone truly needs to hear this album before they die. Feels sort of like a favor for someone they know.
NICE BASS, I like confusion the most so far, especially the bass in the intro. The ending of Havana gang brawl is pretty cool. Railroad has cool bass. Overall, a fun listen.
Hmm... I don't know quite how to feel about this. There were some parts that was quite interesting, like the three four songs, along with 'Not A Lot To Do'. And the overall sound was definitely had something at times. On the other hand I found that overall it sounded a bit weak somehow, like it lacked some instruments like pads or something to make it sound a bit more full. Sometimes it just sounded a bit amateur somehow, not sure how to put it. I also got a bit annoyed with the singer quite quickly. It just sounded a bit pretentious somehow... and I always got the feeling that this sounded just like some other famous band I've heard, but can't remember the name of. I think in the end it's going to have to be a 3 for me. It had some ups and downs, so that's what feels most suitable. Plus points for stumbling into something I have never heard of before!
A pleasant surprise! Never heard of the Zutons before. Realised that they were the original creators to "Valerie" which I of course know. Anyway the album starts really strong with "Zuton Fever" which was probably my favourite track of the album. Such a good and catchy riff! The first few tracks were all good but I lost interested a bit towards the middle-end. I can't put my finger on what is. When I'm listening to tracks while writing this it all sounds quite good. The main parts I didn't like were the acoustic tracks which just didn't do it for me. I think I need to come back to this one and see if the whole thing grows on me. It is possible i just lost interest for no reason of the album but external circumstances. Going for a very strong 3 for now.
This was up and down for me. Sometimes the voice was rather monotone than I would have preferred, but sometimes I really liked the diverse songs and stuff. I think I recognize a lot of creativity, nothing particularly WOWed me but it was definitely interesting.
6/10. I was hoping that I would like this album much more than I actually did like it. It has some nice rock 'n' roll vibes. I was reminded of The Cramps. However, over time, the album started feeling boring. I don't remember what the middle of the album sounds like, and I only listened to the album a few hours ago.
Nice enough album 3/5
A album I think that would have benefitted fromsome re-writes and editing, the crumb of a great album was here 3.5*
Never heard of these guys, but their name sounded fun. I really enjoyed this album, has a pretty unique sound. Definitely one I'll be saving for the future. Favorite songs were Remember Me and Not A Lot To Do.
What do I say about this? "Inoffensive", I think sums it up best. 3/5.
Meh.
The Zutons are cool. I was a big fan of a few of their tracks (not on this album), but this was also pretty great. Almost a 4.
Good album.
This album was a lot of fun. I wasn't ready for it but it got my attention right away. Thanks!
Really unique and cool sound. Very new age post-punk with a good mixture of instruments like horns and keys. Fun melodies and all that. If anything it gets a little one-sided and fails to flesh out, but overall enjoyable!
Never heard of them. Interesting
It was fine. It was just... fine.
It's a pleasant album - but somehow every time I try to get into this band I feel something's missing. The songwriting's good, the pacing of the album is good but something grates with my brain and all these years I have not been able to pinpoint what. Well, sometimes that's how it goes.
Kind of reminded me of Black Keys at the beginning
The musical equivalent of vanilla flavour... not bad but a bit boring
"Who Killed......The Zutons" is the debut studio album by English rock band the Zutons. Their music is described as folk, garage rock and indie pop rooted in blues rock. Thanks...that covers just about every band I know. The album was produced by Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds and the band members included Dave McCabe (vocals, guitarist), Bryan Chowdhury (guitar), Russell Pritchard (bass), Sean Payne (drums) and Abi Harding (sax). The album had generally favorable reviews and hit #6 on the UK charts. A spaghetti western guitar riff opens "Zuton Fever." A bass and clicking drums are added. There's sax and guitar interludes. The music has a sense of mystery or even comedy. It sounds somewhat like the Arctic Monkeys. McCabe going on about bones, epidemics and having a fever. "Pressure Point" starts out with shakers and "Ahh Oooohh Ooooohh" doo-wop harmony vocals. McCabe in his high tenor can't get the pressure point out of his head. A rock-out guitar outro. The band goes all harmonization and chanting in "You Will You Won't." More in the blues rock arena with some funk thrown in. Another interesting guitar outro sounding a lot like Jimi's "Crosstown Traffic." "Confusion" is softer, gentler more a ballad. Acoustic guitar, drums, a bicycle horn and romantic sax solo. He just can't stay in the relationship. "Remember Me" takes it a little faster. There's an alt-country guitar and it's catchy pop. Someone referenced merseybeat to describe this...I guess so...I'd have it to look that up...isn't that the Beatles?...OK merseybeat it is. It's an eulogy to his best mate who's lost a romance. The album closes with "Don't Ever Think (Too Much)." People are singing and clapping. McCabe singing fast and with high tension. A catchy, short song. This album had a nice variety of styles in it: pop, rock, ballads, lounge, baroque, alt-country and oh, OK, merseybeat. At times, they reminded me of the Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Mokeys and White Strpes. That's all good. McCabe is a decent lead singer. The band does a good job building songs. I liked mostly all the songs. This is a good album. Most people should enjoy this.
Favourite tracks: you will you won't; pressure point; remember being; dirty dancehall
An occasionally fun record. And then not, in equal measures. Also absofuckinlutely not important.
A good listen, but this is just a budget version of everything Jack White does
where was this album when i was 17 and dead into uk indie from the 2000s best song: confusion worst song: nightmare 2
Banda inglesa indie...até q legalzinho
Who Killed… The Zutons? Boredom, I think.
Out of all of the semi-obscure 2000's UK indie rock bands on this list, I think this one is my favorite so far, it's not great, but it isn't generic. I kind of get White Stripes vibes from them, just not as good. High 3.
Was never overly impressed with The Zutons, appreciated what they did and respect them for the singles but this as an album didn’t do much for me, I get why they are liked as a band though
Mir unbekannte Rockband. Klingt ok, Highlights waren für mich keine dabei. 3/5
Brit version of the Black Keys.. 2000s indie/garage rock. Nothing bad, nothing original.
Kind of interesting, they have a sound. Haven’t heard them before and maybe worth another listen at some point. They certainly understand how to construct a song and are clearly musicians.
Ok. Nothing really stood out for me.
I enjoyed listening to this quite a bit. It would probably be a 4 star album, except at some point they decided that they had to use every instrument in the studio. I didn't think that worked and it pulled me out of the listening experience at times. So it's an okay record, I'll probably listen to it again. But I don't know if I'll actively seek to put it on.
Not bad.
Kinda cool.
Sounded okay, but not sure why it is on the list.
Ok. Nothing special though. Unsure why this made the cut. Sax does add a slightly different element.
Uh-oh, here comes a one-time band who were briefly big in the 2000’s (around the time they were added to the 1001 list) and have since disappeared (from this list, and pretty much all public consciousness). The Zutons are most widely known for being the original writers behind “Valerie”, later given a brassy R&B makeover (read: “improved immeasurably”) by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson. “Valerie” isn’t on this debut album of theirs; instead, it’s 40 minutes of music I didn’t know and 30 seconds I recognised from treasured UK sitcom “Gavin and Stacey” (opening of “Nightmare Part II”). I hate to be prejudiced, but from where I’m standing, the Zutons smell suspiciously of indie landfill. …so, is “Who Killed… The Zutons” bad? Nah, not really. Is it good? Sure. Then… is it GREAT? Meh, hardly. “Who Killed… the Zutons” is the very definition of a middle-of-the-road, three star album. There’s some good stuff going on here, particularly the range of instrumentation (got to love a jaw harp in “Nightmare Part II”, and mandolin or saxophone breaks in “Not A Lot To Do”.) The clean, choppy guitar riffs by Boyan Chowdhury are solid, too: “Zuton Fever” and “Long Time Coming” consciously hark back to 60’s surf rock, along with the 70’s new wave bands who’d done the same. Thirty years later, the Zutons were part of the army of bands here to convince us that actually, guitars could be cool and fun. I’m all for that. I’m all for the simmering tension of “Pressure Point”, the slight and sprightly “Remember Me”, or the stand-out homespun folk of “Moons and Horror Shows”. And if I stumbled on The Zutons playing a daytime slot at a festival, I’d spend a happy hour there. It’s just that, after repeated listens to this album, I’m still struggling to discern any… pizazz? Spark? Flair? Passion? Something’s missing, and that’s the je ne sais quoi which makes music special. Whether they’re playing at being railroad workers, Havana brawlers, surf rockers or indie darlings, there’s a nagging suspicion the band are trying so hard to play it cool that they’ve lost track of carving out a real identity. It may seem an unfair criticism, but I’m struggling to expand on why this album just hasn’t connected with me. Maybe I’m burning out on auto-generated albums, or maybe The Zutons were burning out on songwriting, or maybe the early 2000’s were burning out on music. Either way, my ultimate takeaway is that “Who Killed… The Zutons” is fine, but fairly forgettable.
Good! Not amazing, would maybe listen to again? maybe also file it under 2000s british boring rock music too.
Nekakav prosjek nulte retra
Meh. This is fine. Ordinary .Nothing special and totally not worth of a spot on this list.
Nice, I liked it. Good background music.
Early 2000s UK rock. Pleasant. A bit tongue in cheek. Also a bit blah. Nothing stands out.
Quite samey,
Every time I hear one of these albums and wonder why it’s on here I somehow forget to think it being British. Kind of a hipster sound and not bad, but just another waste of a spot.
This was interesting. I recognized the first track although I’d not heard of the band. “Dirty Dancehall” was a nice surprise near the end.
I found this to be an overall enjoyable listen. Maybe better than their label mates the Coral. With vocals strikingly similar to Eric Burdon and Ray Davies, I kinda felt like they are a modern day version of The Animals and The Kinks with an edge. There’s a variety of styles going on here, but it still works.
This was…good. I enjoyed listening but honestly don’t really remember much.
This album is totally fine. Admittedly my first reaction was WTF are these guys? But I did recognize the song Pressure Point. I think the most interesting tidbit is they originated the song, Valerie, which was covered by Amy Winehouse a year later. I think that only could justify putting these guys on the list...but Valerie isn't on this album! 3/5
Didn't know these guys at all, but enjoyed the album just fine. Lots of funky instruments and harmonies.
Great album name and artwork, besides that the music itself was pretty middle of the road.
Good uk rock, started off strong... became mediocre by the end
Not sure how I feel about this one. I liked it! But it was strangely repetitive and... uninteresting? I enjoyed the sounds, not the songs.
Better than I expected
This is fine. Very 2004-ey. I’m sure that whatever song was in a Gap commercial made for a very compelling Gap commercial. But I think you could pretty easily put together a list of 1001 albums to hear before you die that didn’t include this one if you weren’t a dumbfuck.
It’s alright. Wouldn’t listen to it again
не запомнилось, скучноватое, не Валери
The first 5 songs of the album are really good. At one point, I even found myself questioning ‘No, all the songs can't be good’. Unfortunately, I was right. The second half of the album is like a copy of the first half. I think it can get a score between 3.5-4.0.
Favorite Track: Pressure Point
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Some interesting beats; I could see these fitting in nicely to an overall playlist.
Lovely.
To me this sounds like a combo of British Invasion music and 2000s alternative rock like Franz Ferdinand or something...maybe I'm talking out of my ass but it reminded me of both (and I liked it!) I don't know if I get why this would be on a list of albums you need to hear before you die because it just feels like a very good iteration of the style I just described, rather than anything really revolutionary or shapeshifting or innovative. I still enjoyed listening to it, however the last song was so bad that it kind of spoiled it for me so I'm trying to channel how I felt during the rest of it up until that point in order to write this review.
Almost a 4 :D
This album felt bi-polar. Wow. That was certainly a change part way through.
"Who Killed...... The Zutons?" Probably themselves after they finished the album.
Jangly, seemingly earnest. Rooted in blues, but has touches of psychedelia and old-fashioned rock'n'roll. Pleasant enough with sticky melodies. Favorite tracks: "Dirty Dancehall", "Pressure Point"
It’s music.
I’d written The Zutons off as indie also-rans but this album suggests they were/are probably a little better than that. It’s not groundbreaking - in fact, it reminds me *a lot* of The Coral’s debut of 2 years previous (which itself wasn’t groundbreaking, magpie-ing as it did from various well-established styles). BUT I enjoyed The Coral and I enjoyed this almost as much. Every song is perfectly agreeable, and there are some definite earworms among them, although none are truly top-tier if I’m being honest. 3.5
There's a lot of these albums by reasonably good Indy bands with a couple of hits. They are ok to listen to (well the hits are anyway) but really only middling really.
Not awful, pretty decent. Favorite Track: Remember Me.
Never heard of this band before. It was OK. There are some songs that I added to one of my playlists.
It’s ok
Pressure Point is a good time. The music video for it was on the UMD that came with the first run of the Sony PSP. The rest of this was pretty unremarkable
🎧Decent. Eclectic in sound. There’s nothing particularly great here. I liked Pressure Point as a kid. Enjoyed Railroad and Dirty Dancehall this time round. Probably not an album I’ll be revisiting.
Pretty good
Fun listen! Nothing super memorable, but I’m not mad at it. Could be a good road trip album.
I've never heard of the zutons, but I liked it, real solid album.
A mixed bag this one. Liked: production, sounded great with beautiful bass and drum. Good tunes, generally a nice mix of genres. Nice upbeat vibes Don’t like so much: vocals, their style and tone. Music built on a foundation of the sort of bluesy swampy rock that I don’t love Best: Nightmare, Pt. II
Nope! I'm sure it's fine. But still, nope.
Delightful. A vibrant, spirited mix of old school rock n roll, 60s British pop and more modern indie. They’ve got grit and swagger and plenty of personality. Fun songs with big energy and bright hooks.
I know this band as being the original songwriters of one of my favorite songs, "Valerie". OH MAN. INSTANT NOSTALGIA HIT WITH "PRESSURE POINT". This was a song on MVP Baseball 2005's soundtrack, the greatest baseball videogame of all time. For a year or two of my life I probably heard this song thousands of times and then never listened again. This happens sometimes with baseball videogames for me, where the soundtracks are generally good and filled with music I actually like, so I would put in crazy amounts of hours into the games while listening to the songs but then I would forget about the random one-off tracks. It's always funny to me how this happens because it's such a unique experience and one that I don't have with anything else in my life; it's literally only specifically dated baseball videogames I played at important seminal teenage years. This song I recognized immediately, or I did and then had to take a second and figure out exactly what baseball game it was from lol. This band kind of has "it", don't they? It's a great sound that is confident and cool and hits on a lot of cool ideas. I don't know why they weren't bigger; or maybe they were and I just missed the boat on them.
Pretty good
I have heard the name before but never listened to their music. It was quite an experience. There are so many different styles and some extraordinary instrumentation. Production is a bit flat, so there's room for improvement.
It was alright. Kind of hard to place a genre on these guys. Strikes me as yet another "the editors are British" pick but whatever.
Some groovy songs in there, the first one being, perhaps, the grooviest.
I was enjoying the album just fine when Confusion popped on. My liking increased 10 fold with that one. It was a good album. Some winners and some tracks were more middling. They should branch away from the well trodden structures more often because I think those were the better tracks.
66 = 3,3 = 3 stars A generic early indie album with clear Beatles inspirations, has some very confused instruments added to some songs but overall diverse enough and quite alright
I've definitely heard Pressure Point before. Oddly the part I remember the most is the vocal harmony intro. Fine enough song. Dirty Dancehall is a late album standout. Otherwise, I found this album to be pretty forgettable. Certain elements of the production and vocals reminded me of White Stripes -- those were the best points. Outside of that, I didn't find much to sink my teeth into. Somewhere in the space between a high 2 and low 3.
Pretty good music, but ultimately pretty bland and inoffensive. Picturesque 3 stars.
ZOLTAN! This was at best mediocre and at worst mediocre. I rate it a 3.
Totally new to me. Refreshingly off-centered. Threatens to be pop but backs off whenever that threatens. Tight musicianship. What did you expect? Those expectations will be unfulfilled.
Fabulous cover! Good (enough) songs! Remember me is a blinder!!!
I feel like this is a band that would be fantastic live but most of the recordings on the album fell flat to me.
Enjoyable album. At times I was catching a Wilco vibe. I can't stretch it to 4 b/c nothing exactly stayed with me from the listen. It's a solid 3.5
It's like post-ska pop band. If that's your thing, you'll dig this album.
These guys like their flat 5ths Good, nothing too crazy
Entertaining and upbeat…
I liked Remember Me and a couple of others almost enough to give this a 4.
It was fine. Not the best work in the Skinny Jeans genre. Simpsons: No
I can see why someone would like this
This was enjoyable but somehow I didn't like as much as I felt I ought to. The genre isn't something I'd generally dislike but nothing really stood out to me
Ágætis rokk með alls konar áhrifum.
That was a trip
So I'd never heard of these kooky cats, I did enjoy a lot of this and will come back for a bit more at some stage.
Imma slut for a good sax Fun instrumentals and vocals are alright Lyrics haven’t been interesting at all They like doing the loud to quiet to loud Gets old kinda quick
2004 respectful edistystä tehty tsäsä genressä vuonna 2004, sanoinko 2004?
Another indie garage record that doesn’t seem to have survived past the 2000s. Pretty good, though
I’m not sure why this album of theirs was picked. It’s not bad, and it shows potential, but it feels rough around the edges. I accidentally listened to some of their later work, and that sounded much more refined, but as is, this was just okay
Not bad. Not bad at all. Railroad is cute tho.
Starts of brilliantly, then trails off
Really good, easy to listen to chilled out vibe. Never heard of them before today. It's really good and I've added it to my favorites to listen to again.
3.75
Still don’t know
Enjoyable. Of the garage rock revival of the 00's, I would place this high on the list. I don't know if it stands out as much as it could, but I thought it was good. Reminds me of SpongeBob for some reason which doesn't count as a negative.
A nice surprise. Saw this on the list and honestly thought I would hate it.
This one was ok. I enjoyed some of the songs but for the most part wasn’t blown away by anything.
I bought this when it came out, and thought it was ... OK. I listened it today for the first time in around 20 years and thought it was ... OK. It's OK.
Fun album. I enjoyed it, but it also didn't do anything super interesting. I didn't mind it though 3/5
I’m gonna be honest, I was expecting something different from this album by its art and title, something a little more camp than the Wilcoy indie stuff, but it’s not bad. I like the almost hoedown-ish turn the last couple of tracks took and would have preferred if the whole thing was more like that, but it’s not bad. C-
Solid!
solid record. I saved some songs to listen to again!
Was looking forward to some Zutes today and 1001 albums generator.com delivered. We get a full album with a variety of sounds. Never heard it. Not bad
These mediocre Brit albums are wearing me out.
Pretty fine, mostly enjoyable album. Not sure that it belongs in the list, but it was a good listen. Favorite track: Zuton Fever
Home cooking again.
This is the very essence of “landfill indie”, a term I really enjoy because it describes that mid-late 2000’s British sing song rock revival that all sounds like this perfectly. It’s entirely forgettable but not offensively bad. The instruments are played well enough, the songs are 90% 4/4 at a moderate tempo. The lyrics might as well be a bunch of phone numbers. The definition of average. 3 stars because I like the goofy saxophone and some of the one string riffs are good. Really it’s a 2.5.
i was pretty into this at the time. Is it actually good or do i just residually like it? Who cares
B Zuton Fever... 3 Pressure Point... 3 You Will You Won't... 3 Confusion... 3 Havana Gang Brawl... 4 Railroad... 4 Long Time Coming... 3 Nightmare Part II... 4 Not A Lot To Do... 4 Remember Me... 3 Dirty Dancehall... 3 Moons And Horror Shows... 3 Pretty good
Aika kiva!
Biiseissä on yritystä - jopa yllätyksellisyyttä.
Fun
Pretty decent but slightly generic for 2000s rock
It was alright, I think I enjoyed it because I remember it being around when I was a teenager. My mum must have had the album or it was on the radio or something. It’s not mind blowing though.
I didn't much care for this album. It was OK just not great.
3/5 - not my thing but a good album
The early 2000s were a really good time for music, as it turns out. I don’t know much about this band and assume they were bigger in Britain, but it’s pretty good. Likely to revisit.
I’ve heard this kind of music be done better before.
I had never heard of these guys, but this was a surprisingly delightful album.
It was enjoyable. But not sure I see 1001 material here.
Not bad.
I liked this. Not brilliant, but reasonably enjoyable music. Shame 'Valerie' isn't on this album, that would definitely have been worth an extra star.
Never heard of this band before but it wasn't bad. I'd listen to it again.
Started strongly and tailed off
The question is if anyone cares who did. This is a rather generic indie rock album with a start and an end and some ok songs. I would not listen to it a third time, there is so much better music around.
Ну... ещё один инди-рок. Как-то плосковато для меня звучал. Я посмотрел, пишут, что у них какие-то супер-крутые лайвы. В записи эта энергетика не до конца передана. На саксофоне чувак хорош!
This is funny. A lot of different styles. It's not too bad.
Best Song: Zuton Fever. A catchy, Arctic Monkeys-esque riff with some nice indie-rock vocals. Worst Song: Long Time Coming. It wasn't outright bad, but it just felt really ordinary, which landed as a disappointment after a relatively interesting opening half. Overall: A decent indie rock album that felt like it used up all of its interesting ideas in the first half. Falls off pretty dramatically in the second half.
Another fun album - enjoyed it
That's not my taste in musik. But ok
Favorites: Nightmare Part II, Remember Me, Dirty Dancehall. Different sound from my taste but I dig the mood.
Starts much stronger than it ends. Very punchy and catchy pop-punk/rock. Unfortunately it seems the band just ran out of steam towards the end.. 6/10
It’s fine but nothing too incredible. Also, I had no idea that the song Valerie is originally by this band (not on this album) and was later covered by Winehouse. [0139/1001]
Actually enjoyed this as background music while cooking. I couldn’t sit and listen to it though..
Not bad but did not finish.
I'm glad I listened. I wouldn't pick it, but it was interesting
Pop-rock de un grupo totalmente desconocido. Buenos acordes y melodías. Escuchable, sin más. Recuerdos de muchos otros grupos
Nice but unremarkable
Damn good fun
Albums like this are why I like 1001 albums generator: it helps me discover bands I never knew about that put out pretty good records.
I thought this was the perfect amount of weird, funky choices to pique my interest. These songs never got very exciting, but there isn’t anything wrong with them either. The album sounds like an alien planet’s (Zuton?) second most popular band. I really enjoyed it. 3/5
Uhh.... yeah? It's fine. Perfectly middle of the road schlock.
The Zutons. Never heard of them and what an interesting name. Of course this band is British. Explains why they went under the radar and why it’s on the list. But this album was pretty good. It’s like if you had blues and dad rock meet and they were like we’ll just take it slow. Nothing crazy on here just casual zutonian stuff. 6.5/10
It was okay, I liked almost every other song and didn't hate the bad ones
I remember this band from my college days! This debut from The Zutons offers a well-rounded blend of pop-garage rock songs that you can't help but get stuck in your noggin. Hearing a variety of 60s/70s influences across the album as a whole as I listen now. The front half of Who Killed..... is stronger than its back, but this was an enjoyable first-time-listen-through for me. And, made me recall fun times with friends back in college so many years ago (We Are, Penn State!).
3.5/5 Songs are catchy and kinda match the old movie poster vibe, but don't seem super original. Derivative but still fun. Highlights: Pressure Point, Havana Gang Brawl, enjoyed the solo in You Will You Won't, Remember Me. Fun but not sure it's a must listen.
3.5 good all around. Nothing great but nothing bad
3+
An eclectic garage revival record that blends countess styles. Their influences are clear, mostly Merseybeat, glam rock, Britpop, folk pop, and garage contemporaries, but they do make some infectious songs. For example, I hear White Stripes in "Pressure Point" and Pavement in "Movies and Horror Shows". Catchy stuff, and production is tight too. The songs don't hit that hard, and they lack originality and consistency, but it's an upbeat time for a diverse experience. This is one of those records where you sorta like a lot of the tracks, but you don't love any of them, and several of them are just straight skippable. Favorites: Zuton Fever, You Will You Won't, Havana Gang Brawl, Not A Lot to Do, Dirty Dancehall
Interesting and eclectic mux if songs. Enjoyed listening to them. 3
This will always be freshman year of high school. Kicked me into deeper musical rabbit holes and knowledge. Riffs huts and great Britpop songs. It may be basic but damn it gets the feeling across.
3.7 - As far as Britpop acts that have mostly ended up in history’s dustheap (see also Super Furry Animals, Travis, Suede) despite Dimery’s inflated estimations, this record at least has the virtue of being catchy and hook-filled.
I like this. Its fun but not world stopping. Breezy Scorsese rock/pop/blues. Its like the Coral with sax. Fresh and honest.
3.0 00s UK indie
I don’t know what this is. It’s fun. It’s interesting. I don’t know if I’d ever search it out.
“The Killers” killed The Zuttons, wore their skin as a suit and the world moved on.
Not bad, didn't hate it. Prolly wouldn't listen again, but enjoyed the first time around.
Pleasant enough listen. Stylistically a little all over the map and though this could be intended as a feature, I felt like it tended to lack cohesion and as a result it faded into a kind of radio background music.
It’s quite fun in places but struggles more in the slower songs as well as the jangly tracks like Remember Me - there’s just nothing that really makes it stick out from the rest of the mid 2000s indie scene Edit: I typed this during Remember Me and was going to rate it a 2, but fortunately the last three songs brought back the charm of a couple of the earlier ones. The album definitely dragged in the middle but it started and finished strongly so fair play
A thoroughly enjoyable album, but (and it's a big but) I can't help wondering if this album actually deserves to be on this list. It sounds like it belongs in a bygone era and really doesn't offer anything new. I expect a lot more from an album this recent on this list.
Lekker swampy.
Best ok. Aantal heel catchy nummers, maar ook wel meerdere best suffe niet heel boeiende opvullers.
I like it but I don’t remember a lick of it.
When this first popped up I thought it was gonna be some Little Steven's Underground Garage stuff , like the Fleshtones or something. This is fine. It's possible if I listened to more by them or saw them live my appreciation for them might grow but this feels like a three star situation right now.
The most retro album I've listened to, and this list includes records from the 1950s. A mystery as to why it is considered an essential album to hear in one's lifetime, but nonetheless it's: immediate, fun, likeable and sing-along-able. I really enjoyed it. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Remember Me Date listened: 02/12/23
Overall some pretty fun and catchy rock and pop (and, I don't know, indie? alt? something a little extra) and I can hear they are very skilled musicians. I enjoyed it.
some okay songs
Inclou algun tema interessant com 'Confusion' o 'Remember Me'
My favorite songs on the album are Confusion, Not a Lot to Do and Railroad...some of the more mellow songs on the album. Standouts: Confusion, Railroad, Zuton Fever, You Will You Won't, Not a Lot to Do Others: Pressure Point, Remember Me, Dirty Dancehall, Moons and Horror Shows 3.5
Alors, c'était sympa à écouter, mais ce genre de rock fait en 2004 par un groupe qui a eu une activité de 2002 à 2006, je vois pas du tout ce que ça fait dans les albums tructrucs.
Monipuolista rallattelua
Aika hauska. Mukaansatempaavia kipaleita, vaikkei huippuja ollut
I remember this album from when I came out. I seem to like it less now.
Ok
Now, this is a good album full of very, very good pop tunes. So why do I find it so grating? I’ve recently chucked this out of my collection during a purge of CD’s so there’s obviously something holding me back on it, what it is though, I have no idea. I’ll give 3 stars though because it is a good album, I just can’t dig it enough to do more.
this album is cool, some fine alternative rock songs or whatever i can tag it as. not all songs are great but the ones that are can be very catchy.
Fun. The first two songs are very good.
I really liked many parts of this album, and I was very aggressively blasé about the rest. Hard to rate an album like that. 3.5 stars I guess
One of the best indie albums of the 2000's. It wasn't a strong decade! It's very good, an easy 3.5, but it's never going to be enough to tick up to a 4.
3.5
It was nice but it felt longer than it was. The sound is great for the era and I don't know why they did not make it to fame lol
The best album I have listened to all week! Which is not saying much to be honest. It's good to take a listen to some alt-rock again. The Zutons bring what I would term a more typical sound for the first part of the album, yet the last few songs transform their sound into folk/country, of which was unexpected, on the fence about whether it was a good or bad change in style. Best: You Will You Won't Worst: Moons and Horror Shows
Really an interesting album! I had never heard of this and found it pretty likeable! This music has its own vibe and is unique among other British bands of the time. Great vocals and instrumentation throughout. Mostly, it was just an album that was consistent and listenable across all the tracks. I bet this was an awesome live show.
Who Killed...... The Zutons? Well... The Zutons killed The Zutons. It's a weird question to ask on the cover of your debut album. Almost asking for an untimely demise. It wouldn't come right away, and it apparently wouldn't be an exciting mystery either. The Zutons quietly disbanded after eight years and three albums. A fairly boring story. But "Who Killed...... The Zutons?" wasn't boring. British indie rock from the 00s is so much better than British indie rock from the 80s, and it's a shame the representation isn't flipped on the 1001. I vaguely recall "Pressure Point" making a splash across the pond when this came out, but The Zutons didn't make much of an impression beyond that. It's too bad though - this debut album shows a lot of potential. "Pressure Point" is infectious, but it was the stretch from "Havana Gang Brawl" to "Not A Lot To Do" that really stood out. Unlike much of the previously alluded to 80s music, The Zutons actually incorporate a saxophone into rock music in a way I don't hate. Also, I'll take the Liverpool scouse accent over London accents from a singer any day. A Beatles-based bias? I'd also never previously listened to The Zutons Liverpudlian contemporaries The Coral before the 1001, but The Coral did not make a good first impression. I'm happy to say The Zutons were much more welcome.
No
Muito divertido, é um álbum gostoso de se ouvir mas infelizmente tem muita música que é bem qualquer coisa
Flashback
10/25/23. I only know the one song Valerie but never listened to the rest of this band’s music. Pretty standard 2000s garage rock sound: has some standouts but also forgettable tracks.
yeah i mean this was fine. pretty mid. not particularly mindblowing mid-00s indie. not bad, alright to listen to. not something i think is particularly interesting. it's actually so not particularly interesting that i am wondering why it's even on here to begin with. like i said, not awful, but i can't imagine anyone listening to this and thinking this is one of the top 1001 albums of all time.
First Listen: The Zutons From England Genre: Folk, Garage Rock, Indie Pop 2004 Singles: ------------------------------------- Pressure Point (#29 US Alt) You Will You Won't (#22, UK) Remember Me (#39, UK) Don't Ever Think (Too Much) (#15, UK) Confusion (#37, UK) Never heard of the Zutons before and never heard any of the songs before. I can definitely get into this one. I'll surely be listening to it again. Favorite track: Confusion. Standouts: Confusion, You Will You Won't, Remember Me, Others: Pressure Point, Railroad, Dirty Dancehall, Moons and Horror Shows,
I enjoyed this much more then I thought I would. I liked the slight Australian blues and dessert rock vibes. Solid 3.5 from me!
Strong start - good throwback sound with touches of Gong. Quickly settled into another ho-hum British indie sound with daft lyrics.
6/10. Started out strong, trailed off a little by the end
well gosh, this album took me by surprise! especially for an unknown artist, i wasn't expecting the zutons to create actual music that was listenable and refreshing. for the most part, this album does not sound like it was released in 2004. there's mostly a sixties pop sound, but somehow combined with garage and folk music. there's even a sound i don't know how to describe--some sort of bluesy, ska sound. "dirty dancehall" is an instance of that unusual, catchy sound. regardless, this was a delightful surprise to my ears. the zutons created an album with a sound i haven't quite heard before in my personal listening or on this project before. i'm glad they're here and i experienced them! 3.5
I mean, this album was fine. It didn't really do anything for me one way or the other. It was fun to hear something a little different in the form of garage rock mixed with modern indie rock and indie folk. Ultimately, though, not really sure what makes this worthy of a spot on the project. "Okay" and "fine" are basically the main words that come to mind when I reflect on this album.
