Reviews (page 12 of 12)

Just not my type of music

Interesting, but guessing by the first song, it will not be for me. It sounds kind of jazz-y, not really my thing.

Fairly repetitive but I have never listened to music like this. The tracks with Ginger Baker sound different from the others in a good way. Possibly my first experience with music from the early 70's and was probably a banger back then. Very long songs almost like a jam band style. Losing interest around the 30 minute mark. I really lost interest but did manage to finish. Just not an album I would play ever again. Will give this a 2.

Good musicians, just not for me

I always struggle with live albums. I find them a little distracting. Did not enjoy this as much as the Fela Kuti studio record I heard earlier in the experience

Noted psychopath Ginger Baker’s appearance on this album doesn’t really mean anything. It’s just as good, or not good, as any other African jazz/jam project. Most of these tracks could’ve had any drummer playing on them and sounded just the same. That said, it’s pretty par for the course in this genre. I felt the musicians on stage had a good time, and that’s fun. Not the most mind expanding thing you could listen to. This is the 3rd of 4th live album I’ve run into from this list, and I’m starting to question each one that’s been here. I have no problem with live albums, but with the quantity of good music out there, are these the records that we need to hear before we die?

Pretty good. I don't like live albums

I just don't understand the music. Great musicians but lots of repetition and it's really had to engage throughout the whole album.

Eh, I wasn't super impressed with this album. It had a lot of repetition, without being super interesting. I wasn't a big fan of the vocals. For me the best thing on this was the recording quality, which is pretty good. All in all probably wouldn't listen to this again.

Jotenki meni ohi ku kuunteli kiirellä

Endless tyckiting.

not my style

interesting rhythms, but not everyday listenable

I don't think I was in the mood for this one. It's definitely funky and upbeat but I just wasn't vibing with it.

Just not for me

wasn't really for me 27 wives 2/5

I enjoyed previous Fela Kuti releases, but this one is just for real drum lovers. It's nice to have a so specific kind of album in the 1001 list, but it's not for me.

Interesting to hear Fela Kuti interact with the crowd. The first 4 songs are enjoyable, nots of jazz with a terrific rhythm section backing them up. Ginger Baker drum solo on the final track drags, I seen many drum solo's in my time and never have I wanted a drum solo to not end.

Goat ledge in the summer vibe Wouldn't choose to listen again

Very repetitive, I'm sure this would have been a great experience live. Not for me.

I believe Fela Kuti is classified as "afrobeat", this was some rambly jazz stuff with some drum solos

poum poum poum poum

bon j'ai faim de musique plaisante

Yeah ok, interesting at a number of levels. The rhythms are great, he's bowerbirded a range of influences to very good effect, including listening to a lot of JB. It's sounds like a great night out, if a bit samey. I didn't get to listen to the Ginger 16 minute drum solo bonus track, but I can just imagine... It was worth a listen.

can there be *too much* drumming, despite the quality of said percussion? the evidence presented here points to a solid "yes". another stingy 2*

Sorry, really not my thing.

Not my kind of thing. Cool that Ginger Baker makes an appearance a few times, and the wikipedia article about the album is pretty good, but I just didn't enjoy it.

Sorry to say I wasn't feeling this one.

It's fine but not for me

it's alright. 2.5/5

too jazzy

All instruments. Very weird. I know it’s live but… not my thing.

There's obviously talent here, but this was kinda long and kinda boring to listen to for me. I mean, the average song length is, like, ten minutes and the shortest song on here is seven minutes long. There is a 16 minute song on here that is just a drum solo, which I think is a bonus track, but I listened to it, so I'm gonna complain about it. Not really my thing, but I respect it. Kind of shocking that I didn't like it that much, considering it's funk and soul, but there wasn't much energy in this music, so I guess it didn't connect with me. My favourite song was Ye Ye De Smell.

No thanks

As much as I like Fela Kuti, this isn't an essential record of his. Just like with his other records, you get just a handful long jazzy afrobeat compositions which are all good and I'd kill to see live, but nothing here is extraordinary. We have yet to see from Kuti could pull off in the likes of Zombie, Confusion, or Expensive Shit. "Zombie" for example was an excellent pop track inviting the audience to dance and sing with memorable hooks, and I'm not seeing much of that here. I will admit that Ginger Baker, the drummer of Cream, is an incredible addition and blew me away a few times. These pieces feel more jammy and improvised with a raw live sound. My favorite track here is the groovy and funky "Black Man's Cry."

Wow! Amazing rhythms. The energy! Not something I'd listen to every day, but wow.

Good but just not for me

An interesting jazzy album that was a little better than expected. Weirdly enough have heard some of one song because it was sampled before. This album was ok though. 4.5/10

Didn't need the 16 minute drum solo. No ones needs a 16 minute drum solo.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: for Jazz and solo it ain’t too bad but still remains background music for me Favourite song: Track 3 - Ye Ye De Smell(but ultimately it won’t be going on any playlist of mine)

good music but live album

Just feels lacking in variety, if not energy. Bonus - it’s only 46 minutes but it is really repetitive. I was already looking at the time five minutes in.

With added ginger. But not for me.

live black folk traditional African music

Lilit zegt cavakes. Maar toch een strenge 2

varmaan ollut hieno live. odotin ehkä menevämpää tai enemmän vaihtelua, rummut meni nyt ennemmin transsitilaan. puolensa siinäkin

Every song is very long... Best song is "Egbe Mi O" Cool history of Afrobeat 2/5

Funky beat. Lots of horns.

Sounds like a funk explosion. I liked it but I doubt I’ll go back for more. That being said, THIS is how you do live drum solos.

Not my thing

If you had me choose between jazz and afro beats, I'd pick this vibe over jazz. I like the danceability. Fela is a complicated dude for me to really like because of his 27 wives. This is getting a lower rating because while I really like the vibe, it sounds like one long song.

Live! Better to be live than dead I suppose.

Too much ginger baker and not enough fela kuti for my liking. This felt like a 45min drum solo… and if there’s one thing I hate more than a drum solo, that’s an entire album of drum solo!

Jazz music with an African beat. Not for me.

Nicht so meins…

It was okay, not quite my thing.

Not bad, but I didn't care for it Great drum work from Ginger

Macron demission.

Ritmos psicodélicos y africanos bien combinados. No me ha parecido demasiado inspirador

Not my thing. I respect the musicianship but I wouldn't listen to this.

Jazz with a lot of African influences. Definitely interesting, especially the Ginger Baker solos, but not first-choice jazz.

Funky album but those songs were super long and felt more like a jam session than a coherent album

It's a live-jam album, so it doesn't all work out, but there's a lot of good stuff to hear with this one. Not something I'd keep in my rotation, though.

Was gong to be 3, until the interminable Ginger Baker drum solo kicked in.

Opens with a BANG then settles into the background. Put this on while cooking your favorite meal with your favorite person.

Something very different for me. I liked some of the pipe/wind stuff. But overall I just couldn't get into this

Probably pretty decent but it descends into a few too many drum solos for my tastes

Hmm... I like Fela Kuti but I do not like live albums.

Hmmm, not terrible but see myself listening to it again. The vocal style is kinda obnoxius. 2

izmedu 2 i 3, malo je dosadno

I like the instrumentation but that's about it.

-Not my favourite genre of music -Good to relax to -I can respect that the artist is feeling the music and it sounds like they are passionate about it -Liked the ending of Egbi Mi O (Carry Me) when everyone in the crowd started singing along -Sounds like it would be fun to see live

Was interesting enough. Some smoothing instrumentals that I heard. These are lengthy tracks, that span the time of 12 minutes. Crazy. The type of thing I'd play while studying. Really neat sounds though, Reggae man

A fun listen and cultural artifact but pales in comparison to virtually any other Fela material.

Ein wenig ohne Richtung abgefeuerte Live Salve Orientierungslose 1.6

Funky, good musicians but didn't hold my attention (live albums make good background noise)

It was alright, not for me

Jam bands are just not my jam. Maybe these guys aren’t a jam band, but this is definitely a jam bandy album. I like songs to have a something to say and get to the point…in and out, which can be drawn out so long as there is continually something more to say. I must distinguish my feelings about this album and other albums with very long songs because I’m sure it will come up down the line. A song can be quite long and continue adding to its point view throughout. For instance, Dylan’s Visions of Johanna is a master piece of poetic storytelling that feels far too short at 7:30. Also, I just listened to Jimi Hendrix’s 15 minute long Voodoo Chile (studio version) and it was engaging throughout. The difference for this album is that the jamming sounds like directionless noise generated just because they could. A good life lesson: just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I get that this is a live album so there is likely some detriment to not being in the audience. But still, there are other live albums I love listening to at home. I swear I can hear Ginger and Tony loosing interest in what’s going on several times throughout Ginger Baker And Tony Allen Drum Solo. Listen again to around the 7:15-7:45 mark…they don’t want any part of this. No one needs a 16 minute drum solo unless your name is Bonzo (Bonham) or Neil (Peart), and even then I hesitate to claim they could keep it interesting for that long. I do like some of the music, especially the big horn parts. Some of the bass and keyboard parts are worthwhile. Way too much jamming for me.

Didn't finish the album. Sorry, not my type again. :(

Usually a fan of weird funk jazz improv type stuff, but a 10 minute drum solo was a bit much 😂

Not my kinda music

I love Fela, but not a fan of this. More jazz than afrobeat? Not much fun.

2/5 too many drums and tribal sounds :(

Afrobeat. Extended jams that are funky and soulful. BT: Let's Start, Black Man's Cry

Vikkelät rytmiikat. Itse jäin takariviin ja poistuin kesken keikan oluttiskille. Havahduin vasta keikan päättäneeseen Tony Allenin rumpusooloon.

James Brown op zijn Afrikaans. Maar naast funk, ook wel een jazzy feel. En Ginger Baker is een baas op drums. Maar ik zou dit zelf niet zo snel opzetten. Het is te langdradig en ik heb een hekel aan drumsolos

Groovy and sounds African-Jazzy. Last song was great. 5/10.

All in all -> 2*

Anxiety inducing by the end

funky reggaeish

Not cool enough for it or maybe it isn’t cool enough for me. Probably the former.

Duplicate

A bit different but I didn't like it

Interesting mix of African beats and funk. Too funky for my taste

Noodling

Amazing Afrobeat artist from Nigeria … despite its small duration a descent live album . Not my taste though .

Larguísimas es poco

Det orker jeg sgu ikke høre på det her

La percusión está muy buena, pero son canciones muy largas. Se pierde el sentido

Mierdita.

Upbeat but not for me

Not my jam

Me costo terminarlo, no fue mi estilo.

Two did not finishes in a row. While vocally there was certainly some interesting sections, ultimately I’d rather be listening to something else and just couldn’t make it through some tough jazz instrumental sections.

It's pretentious

Not a massive fan of live albums.

I didn't get a chance to listen

It's kinda funky, just not my kinda funky

not my style but the music is good just isnt my tune

Bloody awful. These guys are good musicians but Christ this was hard work to get to the end. Jam after jam after jam for over an hour. I never liked ginger baker and this has made me like him even less.

Boring!

i did not like it at all, sounded very messy to be honest

Some of the tracks were an… ‚ok’? background for working, but some were really obnoxious and distracting, like Black Man’s Cry. Whoever decided it should be listened to before death should be hanged.

Not my style

Ikke fundet

Not my vibe

Not worth listening to

I thought this would be amazing, African drums and Ginger Baker, What a disappointment. It was boring from beginning to end, Drum solo could have been, and should have been awesome but it just went on and on, never varied and no great drumming.

Livealbum

Of a time and a place, but not my time and not my place.

Rating: 1.0 I have very little patience for live albums already, I just can’t do this shit anymore.

Livealbum

Boring, no vocals

Not a fan of this style of music.

Not for me

Not my vibe

No he entrado mucho en el disco, no me ha llamado la atención.

Interesting

Fela Kuti lived an amazing life that is worth knowing about. Afrobeat is unfortunately not for me though. Tracks to Track: Zombie (not from this album)

Have not listened to this album

Looked at the reviews, either 5s or 1s. Its another live album, which spells shite for me. I gave it a chance, but no chance. F#@%ing load of rubbish. I might as well listen to random albums rather than be fed this daily bilge. 1001 albums, where from.

En que momento me he comido unas setas ???

Repetitive and generally not appealing. Made me irritated and could not finish.

I can understand how this album would be influential in its genre, but it’s not my taste. I can see listening to this style of music in an outside bar in the Caribbean but other than that it’s not for me.

Repetitive and boring throughout. Not much to say, but I would have rather not listened to it. Not really sure why it's on this list.

This album’s true artistic quality has nothing to do with my rating- I personally was just not equipped with the taste to enjoy it. It reminded me of the parts of live concerts where they introduce the band but it went on for a full hour and that’s just something I do not know how to appreciate.

Long winded but fun and funky

As someone who has played drums for many years, I bizarrely found this very irritating

this album wasn't my thing

Afrobeat not really my thing tbh. But the music is quite nice and good chill music. drum solo kinda crazy Ngl. I’d give it a 1/5.

No, thank you

duran caleta las canciones

I'm less than a tenth of the way through this list, but I feel as though I can pretty confidently call this the biggest swing and a miss that I will ever encounter on this website. I think I've consolidated what I don't like about this in my other reviews, so I'm gonna lay it out real quick in bruhllet point form 🗿https://youtu.be/Oc7Cin_87H4🗿 Live albums are near-impossible to appreciate from the perspective of a non-fan and do not belong on this list. They aren't popular, don't showcase a pivotal point in music history and don't capture the experience of listening to music live. 🗿https://youtu.be/Oc7Cin_87H4🗿 Long songs are for the artistically suicidal. Unless we're talking about one of the greatest anthems of all time - a song that will reverberate in the eardrums of millions for centuries to come, trim it down. 🗿https://youtu.be/Oc7Cin_87H4🗿 Jazz is shite, especially the freeform stuff Please load up your digital audio workstation of choice and play three vine boom sound effects together in my honor

It’s a racket

The live atmosphere doesn't come across really, and I don't care about drum solo's.

музон приятный, да и со стариной я уже знаком. но хорошего должно быть понемногу !!!

не ритммчиские выкреки 0/10

This is not my thing at all but I can appreciate it. I respect the tight playing of instruments and I get why people may somewhat enjoy it. But people love this? I think people pretend to like this sort of stuff so it makes them seem cool. Whether the tracks were two minutes long, over ten minutes like they are here, or even if it was just one long track it wouldn't matter, it all sounds the same. Fela introduces each song and on 'TRACK 3' says he wrote it for Ginger Baker. He wrote these songs? I can't help but feel that you can't write stuff like this. It's as if some talented musicians all got up on stage and just played whatever they felt like. It's an overly long jazzy wank fest of the highest order with occasional decent vocals. To my ears, it's essentially a jam session. Maybe I'm more standard thinking when it comes to music. It should have a catchy melody or a memorable tune. A riff, a vocal line, something to hum or sing along to. This has none of those things, which is fine, if you're into this then great, I'm pleased for you, but I don't get it.

Not really my thing

1 song

Viel instrumental ohne Gesang. Wer das mag, ist hier gut aufgehoben, für mich irgendwie zu hektisch und zu wenig angenehmer Gesang.

Schade! Wieder nichts. Endlos lange Titel im immer gleichen Rhythmus.

couldn't find

A new worst ... Congrats!

uugghhh

I'm not a fan of purely acoustic albums- the songs in this album seemed to drag on and were highly repetitive in my opinion. I will try to finish listening, but it already feels like I've been listening for hours.

Oh geez. How is this on the list? I don't like jazz at the best of times, but this is the pits! The singer reminds me of a Nigerian James Brown without access to songwriters. So, the inclusion of Ginger Baker's name appears to be nothing but marketing. Honestly, the number of drummers worth writing about or specifically listening for can be counted on one hand. Let's see: Peter Criss for Beth and a pretty cool solo in 100,000 Years; The singer from The Romantics; Scott Travis in Painkiller and every Priest release after that; Mick Tucker for being exactly 25% of The Sweet. Even the really important drummer in ABBA generally goes unknown. Bottom line - this is rubbish, and won't grace my lovely digital record player (Vinyl Fetish by Argentinian developer, German Buela) again. Postscript - playing bass in these types of bands must be the most dissatisfying experience ever. This guy is playing the same pattern over and over and over and over again!

Rad beets, not my jam

Endless jams. Second didn’t-listen-to-the-whole-songs album in a row.

Album Nr. 52 Ne. Ich kann das nicht anhören.

Short album insofar as there are only a few tracks, but all are lengthy. Each song started out strong and interesting and vivacious but tapered off into something less intriguing as they carried on. Was a chore to not skip some of the songs at minute 5 or 6.

Songs are 12+ minutes long - it started good and if you want background jams this might work

Å nej, är det jazz... :( Avslutar med 16 minuter trumsolo, så klart. 1 / 5

I dont get it

Just not my style reference. May be good for workouts, though!

Pas mon genre de musique

I really did not like this album. The songs all sounded the same and I do not understand how any meaning is received from this music. Definitely not my style. Favorite Song(s): N/A

Not for me

not for me at all

Blocked

Nope. Too repetitive

very boring.

Cannot be listened to sober

Terrible music…

Periaatteessa erittäin kuunneltavaa, mutta jazz-soolot varmistavat, etten tule ikinä kuuntelemaan uudestaan.

Hmmm, another one where obviously it’s me that’s missing something. Im sure this is great but I don’t get it; again it’s Not For Me™️

Not on spotify

first day,, this is not my favourite genre. 6 long songs totalling 1h when i'm supposed to sleep so uh.. skipped the first song after the halfway mark, played a bit of the rest to see if there's any i generally vibe with, andd there aren't. might come back to this if i have more time, to see if it grows on me, but i highly doubt so

Not my type of thing

Jäi kesken. Ei vaan pysty. Paskaa.

16 min drum solo.... negative 100 stars

Not enough to enjoy with this one

Muy corto. No me ha gustado

Que es esto!

This does absolutely nothing for me.

Fela Kuti is regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat music, and this is an album he recorded in 1971 with Cream's former drummer - Ginger Baker. The album has 4 songs and is a total of 46 minutes long. The rhythm of the music is tantalizing, but I personally found no engaging substance other than that to vibe with. I'm sure when this album dropped in Africa, everyone was partying to it, but probably not so much in the America's or Europe.

4 decent world music jazz jams and a 16 minute long drum solo. 1 star just for that self-indulgent mush.

This album wasn't really for me, I didn't like it that much. 1/5 stars.

Ei tämä nyt oikein lähtenyt.
