Enjoyed this in the background, but too jazzy for active listening for me.

Cool to vibe to but gets very samey after a while

I think I would need to see this live to enjoy it. I imagine a lot is happening on stage that I'm missing by just listening. It's so long. Parts of it are funky, parts of it are dull. Mostly dull. The drum solo is the biggest anticlimax ever. How do two drummers considered to be the best of their kind manage to come together and sound so bloody boring?

More interesting to listen to than I expected since this is definitely not a genre that I listen to; however, I will probably not listen to it again. Also, in a personal vein, I am not a fan of Ginger Baker as a drummer.

First listen. Man, I don't know. I wanted to like this, but it just kind of bored me. There doesn't seem to be a lot going on here; or maybe I'm just not hearing it. It sounds far too basic, and far too repetitive to keep my interest, and while neither of those things are bad on their own, it's difficult to pull them both off at the same time. The last track in particular was extremely tedious; I don't know if sixteen minutes of straight percussion is quite my thing. It certainly has its moments, though. The end of Egbe Mi O in particular was fantastic; partly because I tend to gravitate towards more melodic passages, but also because the crowd joining in felt quite magical. It's hardly a bad album, but not quite my thing, I guess. Fav. Track: Egbe Mi O (Carry Me)

Cool sound but just way too long and repetitive. If you’re not experiencing live jazz live then it loses a lot of luster.

No m'encanta, quasi tot instrumental. Musica molt semblant entre si. Es musica africa que segurament jo no acab d'entendre.

It’s something I could definitely put on while working on a project or cleaning and not get sick of it. If I wanted to be engaged by the music, which is what I usually want from music, I couldn’t see this keeping my attention all the way through. It’s not something I’d put on in the car. It’s perfectly good for background music though.

Yikes, that was rough. It’s true that my ears aren’t trained for this kind of music, but I prefer my music to have a bit more direction.

I have little patience for live albums, and while "Live!" by Fela Kuti wasn’t bad, I just can’t enjoy them the way I wish I could. You really had to be there to fully appreciate the energy and vibe I guess...

I know 1001 is a lot, but did I really need to hear this? Afrobeat is cool and all, but I don't even think this is the best representation of Fela. There's also a 16 minute drum solo as a bonus track. Whatever.

Ingen tvekan om att det svänger. Men det saknas ändå någon form av dynamik. Energin är genomgående hög men för att ta till sig den fullt ut hade jag önskat större kontraster. Fela å grabbarna maler på med fullt ös från början till slut. Låtarna går in i varandra och griper inte riktigt tag i en. 16 minuter trumsolo blir i ärlighetens namn rätt tråkigt. Säkerligen mycket roligare om man var med på plats.

This style of music doesn’t move me especially, but I can sometimes key into the groove. I probably prefer Zombie, which we heard earlier on the list. At the very least it was nice to see what Ginger got up to after Cream. ⭐️⭐️

2.3 1x not my thing

I went into this knowing it wasn't for me. 5 songs at over an hour, 1971, Fela Kuti, Afrobeat music. A 16 minute drum solo?! It's African Jazz, and I'm not into Jazz and freeform jazzy jamming. This sound is lost on me and I'm not afraid to admit it. I prefer my songs stay under 11 minutes long, not possible on this album. I have no idea why this is a T1001 album - I found it to be quite the opposite. 2 stars as I'm sure they're good Afrobeat musicians and there were moments that shined. Knocked it for no hits, no influence on popular music that I'm aware of, a small listen count on Spotify (after 50 yrs) and just the fact that it includes a 16 minute drum solo (pure agony live at any show!).

If Ginger Baker wasn't on this, I don't think this gets the recognition on this list. Fela sounds a bit brash and too loud. The guitars are mixed in really muddy while the horn section is crystal clear. The rhythm section isn't even that special with Cream graduate Ginger Baker. After sitting through this, I checked out Flea Kuti's other work and his other work is quite good. Zombie is a standout album. I'd recommend that as a jumping off point than this. Really unsure why this live album is supposedly a "crown jewel."

Fela Kuti has a live one here (so free pass.) With the add of Ginger and the jazzy world music card make it 1001 Must Hear List worthy. The 16 minute drum battle runs long. Enjoyed it overall. (2.35*s)

The Fela and his band can sure bring the rhythms of Africa. I got in the zone with this album but it also dragged on with much of the same. Ginger must have had ye ye de smell after those drums solos though c'mon. 2 stars for jungle jammin' live.

Didn't expect much from a live version of a foreign album. Was actually pretty satisfied with what I got. It's mostly just some afrobeat jams but it was relatively satisfying. Not sure what the connection is but kinda cool that they got Ginger Baker involved. Pretty redundant after a while but I guess I enjoyed the album enough to stick around for the drum battle as opposed to immediately bailing out. 2.08 stars

Nice bit of world music. not doing anyone any harm, cant imagine listening to it again, but didnt mind listening to it at all.

My heart sank when I saw the albumator had thrown this one up. I’ve heard it before and I wasn’t all that impressed. I don’t connect with funk music, and I find jazz funk that doesn’t let up for over an hour even less relatable. The musicianship of Fela Kuti and the band is undeniable, but I didn’t find anything to savour. There is also really good energy on all the tracks. It’s not that anything on here is bad, because the album is a brilliant fusion of jazz, funk and soul with Afrobeat. It’s just not the album for me.

Really interesting, but not for me

Well, I am sorry. I loved the way it starts and I can see the virtuosity and all. However, I got tired after the two first songs. I can appreciate its magic, but I am not made for listening to this kind of music

I know he’s a legend but I found this album boring and repetitive (apart from the second half of Egbe Mi O).

Compared to every other similar album I have encountered on the list so far (jazz / roots / blues / world / excessive noodling), this one is a breath of fresh air in many ways. Much more exciting, energetic, funky and fresh sounding from the get-go. A palatable blend of instruments and sounds with the focus on snappy rhythms - even the sax overload is not too off-putting in this context. It is, however, still a predominantly instrumental record full of reaaaaaaally long tracks which descend into improvisational hell. All fantastically performed, of course, but overall I would describe the experience as... well, imagine you dropped the needle on a copy of the first Doors LP, and it lands right at the start of the instrumental break to Light My Fire, then imagine you are anticipating that glorious moment where it all resolves and reverts back to the intro riff, the final verse and chorus. Then imagine that moment NEVER COMES, but the instrumental break just continues on for another hour. Yeah, it's kind of like that. Don't think that means I didn't enjoy this though, but it's only ever going to be background music fodder, and would surely provide a good source of some sampled breaks and beats if nothing else.

Live album. Funk / Soul. Only five tracks for sixty one minutes of run time. An album of jamming and very long solos. The drumming is, of course, fantastic and crazy from Ginger Baker. Great musicianship from a very random collaboration here. It's okay, just not my kind of thing. I prefer Ginger Baker with Cream. Felt Kuti is someone I'll have to look into more.

I’m sure plenty of tools feel enlightened by giving this 4-5 stars, but it’s just not that good. Fine to have on in the background once, but nothing groundbreaking or all that catchy, even for quasi-jazz.

Some random worldwide live album from the 70s featuring the drummer of Cream that’s over an hour long and only 5 tracks? Yeah you already know I was ready to hate this album experience. Quite surprisingly, however, it wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating. Still nothing I’m looking to ever listen to and I wasn’t happy about having to add a song from this to my 1001 albums playlist, but I digress. Not something I regret listening to but not something I’d be happy to listen to again either. Sick 15 minute drum solo to end though.

The Ugly: The scratches on my head while I am trying to figure out why I’ve had to listen to 2 albums from this fella… Seriously… Zombie, or whatever the other album was called, already made me wonder why I had to listen to this… and now I get served a Live! album to boot? Seriously? I better get to listen to 3 Oscar Peterson albums, just to cleanse my pallet… This album is getting 2*, only because I am not going by me mood, which would turn it into a 1* album and seriously make me re-think spending another 2 years on this daily journey...

Definitely not my cup of Cream! Reminds me of a raw James Brown, but definitely not my taste. The songs just seemed to ramble on like they were just having a jam session without a real finish in mind. I can imagine they were having a good time while doing it. Music wasn’t terrible, just not my thing.

An incredibly tight, long jam session. Felt like I was outside at the festival with them. After a bit though, It was repetitive- essentially one long song.

got boring fast, 5 track album lasting over an hour is not for me

what i’ve learned from this process so far is that songs from the pre-streaming era are all either 90 seconds long, or 23 minutes, with absolutely no other options in between. although i do enjoy the change of pace with this one, i do feel like this would be more enjoyable to listen to live, in a musty dancefloor somewhere and probably under the influence. sitting in the concrete prison listening to afrobeats makes me more depressed than i was initially, as it reminds me of how i could be spending my young fun years out somewhere warm, instead of on burnaby mountain where it is currently 9 degrees and raining, and there is homework to be done. every tippy tap of the drum solo was tippy tapping directly onto my sad tired skull.

It was good but 16 minute songs are not compatible with my attention span.

Im going to relisten to this when i need to lock in with my dissertation. Because the drums do hit but they also hit a little random when your on the train home from london after a pint.

This would not be an album or music that would ever be on my radar if it weren’t for this project. I enjoyed listening to the album for something new but would not return to it for listening pleasure. That said it wasn’t bad but I would have liked it more if the songs were shorter.

So, if you like concerts that have long drawn out songs that are mostly instrumental riffs, you’ll like this album. Also, I think there’s a special place in heaven for those who appreciate and even more so, like drum solos. Me, I just kept asking myself, when will this song be over? Needless to say, this one just isn’t for me. Two stars.

Not really for me

I literally just had a different fela kuti album and it sounded exactky the same. Which means neither of them can be all that important. 2 stars. I gave the other one 3. The albums can split the extra point to make it a tie if they want.

Conflicted with this one. There's a great energy on this live album, and it's scatterd throughout with some interesting melodies and rhythms. But every track descends into a monotonous 10+ minute jam on a single chord. I like a drum solo just as much as the next guy, but 16 minutes is excessive.

I know this is blasphemy, but I’m not a Ginger Baker fan. So far the opening track is great. Ok. Track is good, but it feels like 30 seconds looped for 6 minutes. This would be great at a dance club. It got repetitive listening to it. Well, I’m more of a Ginger Baker fan now. But this album is still repetitive.

A 2 song album makes it on this list? 24 minutes long? That’s it? I’ve heard better drum solos and better jam out performances than this. I don’t feel the urge to move and get into it like I know I should. This album leaves me scratching my head that’s for sure.

I get that Fela Kuti is a legend, but this live album was a chore. The jams just drag on and on, with every song blending into the next. The band is tight, sure, but the endless repetition and lack of real variety made it hard to stay interested. It’s supposed to be energetic and electric, but most of the time it felt like background noise that refused to end. If you’re not already a diehard Fela fan, this album feels more exhausting than exciting. I honestly just got bored.

another live album that sounds like a rollicking good time for the people who were there, but doesn't quite translate to recorded media for me. the first song was pretty good, but after that I was just mired in long tracks and lost in them musically without knowing how to escape. the final challenge was surviving the 15-minute drum solo, which (as someone who considers himself an amateur drummer) was not terribly exciting overall. this is like a 2.5 for me. favorites: let's start

I'm sure there is a story behind how Ginger Baker ended up making this record but its alright, progressive jazz with African roots.

I’m well aware of Ginger Baker but had never heard of the other fel(l)a! or this album before. When I think of Ginger Baker I immediately think of Cream and long drum solo’s. Never saw Cream live but have listened to their music which includes quite a few long drum solos. The trouble with long drum solos I find is that whilst they may be technically brilliant they are something which must be seen live because the drumming is also a visual experience which is obviously lost when recorded. As I say I’ve never seen Ginger Baker but witnessed quite a few live. Carl Palmer of ELP springs to mind. An example of the visual bit is how he would take off his t-shirt in the middle of the solo whilst still drumming furiously. Or as the solo climaxed his transformation to an Octopus as he banged everything in front, side, behind and even above. Always well worth a round of applause similar to one you hear on this album during Ginger Baker’s solo but you’ve no idea what feat he has just performed. Whilst it was interesting to hear Ginger’s involvement in this album the rest of it did nothing for me at all. Thanks to Peter Gabriel I have become aware of African music and do like some but very little on this album. 2/5 3/6/24

A fun vibe that was free flowing and would definitely get you into a good groove in the right setting. This wouldn't be in my personal rotation but could see it coming up at the right bar or club. Best: Black Man's Cry Worst: Egbe Mi O (Carry Me) 2.5 Stars

Funky fresh but the repetition drove me insane

Good energy throughout. Songs are repetitive and probably something that is better experienced live.

Hört mal a den Trommelmann, wie er mit der Trommel trommeln kann. Ich mir das erste Werk komplett angehört mich anschließend mit der Skip-Taste gerettet. Neben den Schlagzeug gab es auch Trillerpfeifen. Vielleicht ein musthear für alle Hobbyschlagzeuger aber definitiv nichts für mich.

Too funky for me.

I'm sure there were probably loaded Volkswagen vans full of people following around these guys in the 70s but it's not for me. It's repetitive and lowkey enough that it could find a home during the heist montage in an Ocean's 11 movie.

Not my thing. The language/topics don't speak to me, and the music was a little too drum-heavy to work as background music.

I’m sure being there when it was recorded would have been a mindblowing experience, but recorded, it feels tedious, relegated to ambience at a hipster cafe that insists on playing vinyl slightly too loud.

This is like a big-band jazz thing with an African twist. The singer is Nigerian and there's a bunch of context about his life that I'm sure I'm missing, and then Ginger Baker is a British drummer from the band Cream. I guess Kuti is known as the king of afrobeat, which is a mix of West African music with American funk and jazz. It's ok, but not really my thing. I got pretty bored pretty quickly. It's also a "live" album, but it's really an "in-studio live" album which barely counts to me. Just not a bunch that's memorable on here to me. Favorite song: Let's Start 4/5/24

I can live without drum solos

I appreciate the musicianship here but it's more jazz fusion and I just don't really click with it. Some very long tracks of (albeit impressive) just drumming. And drumming. I appreciate that Tony Allen is a legend but can we give him a band to stick an actual melody over that?

Too jazzy

It's not my typical type of music. The beats and instrumentals were ok, but I probably wouldn't listen to this again.

So the first song this live album was absolutely awesome - as "Let's Start" was incredibly well done, as the sound was crisp, and the players were definitely comfortable with each other, and all on the same page... My brain immediately thought - "...wow - this sounds like the African version of "The Buena Vista Social Club..." - which was an awesome album which should be on the 1,001, recorded by a number of amazing Cuban musicians in the 90's... Anyways, with my hopes up, the next song "Black Man's Cry" wasn't as good as the first, but the 3rd song "Ye Ye De Smell" steps it back up, and was better than the 2nd - but then the rest of the songs went downhill from there... The quality of the recording was very good for its age, and there is no arguing with the outstanding musicianship - but nothing can save a less-than-stellar song... Ginger Baker from Cream plays drums on the final 4 songs of the album, and always liked Ginger - and he seemed to enjoy playing with these guys... Final thought is that the last track on the album is 16+ minute drum solo with Ginger and some of the other drummers playing on this album... Now I'm a drummer, and I really dislike drum solos - especially long, bloated, and self-indulgent ones... I would rather see drummers incorporate their chops "into" each of the songs that they are playing - like Ginger does on "Ye Ye De Smell" - where the percussion is truly "integrated" into the song, as opposed to the drummer "just keeping time".... Unfortunately, the album ends with this long, meandering, and quite frankly - an incredibly boring drum solo that is about 12-minutes too long... The solo finally ends, and that's the end of the record - no applause, no "...thank you Cleveland, good night..." - it just ends suddenly... Can't remember the last time an album started out with such promise for me, only to end in complete and utter oblivion... There is definitely some excellent playing on this one, and the 2 songs that I've referenced alone made it worth listening to... Would probably give it a 2.50 - based mainly on musicianship, quality of the recording for a live album, but there's no way I can get this to a 3...

This is good in terms of musicianship, groove, quite funky, enjoyable to a certain extent. Some of the sax and trumpet stuff is great, understated funky guitar etc. I don't like Live albums being on the list. And the songs are VERY long. The shortest is 7 minutes and 45 seconds. Which is fine, but at the same time, it does feel some go on for the sake of going on. If i was there live, i'd probably be loving it, which adds to the disconnect of it being a live album and on a list like this. I am not sure that after today I would ever listen to the album again, not to say that i didn't enjoy it, but there are so many albums on the list I'd love to revisit, I'm not sure this one makes that list.

I just get really tired of songs that are over 10 minutes long and mostly drum and organ solos. I get it, you smoke pot.

I struggle to understand the appeal of anything I've heard by Fela Kuti and friends. It tries too hard to be dun, dance-y music and instead becomes repetitive down to the "one more time" being said far more than once. Is the musicianship quality? Sure, and I can recognize some good little moments in there, but when you're rocking four tracks that almost all exceed ten minutes, you need more than a solid lick or two to get me invested. Perhaps this was a party-and-a-half in the moment, but on wax it just feels like a man yelling at you for not enjoying his music enough.

Ok, not really my style, but can understand the important influence for roots / jam bands.

This was alright. My biggest problem with it is the backing instruments play the same 4 second loop while the main instrument solos. It isnt bad but it feels really repetitive. All in all 2 stars

Meh. If there was 2.5 stars, this would get it. It’s bang average - didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Cool drums (drummer here) but nothing really stands out.

It was great music to listen to while cleaning the house. It wasn’t too stimulating so I was able to really focus on my tasks. Its the kind of music you can just chill out too and slowly drift off to sleep. The music is mostly instrumental which is generally not my cup of tea since I’m a singer. I also found it hard to dance to so despite it sounding very impressive I’m gonna have to give a rating based on my own enjoyment.

I love the concept of Afrobeat music, but can't endure Fela Kuti for very long. The songs are repetitive and go on forever. ...And then there's a sixteen-minute drum solo.

This is an enjyoable - and typical - offering from Fela Kuti. I guess Ginger Baker is one of the drummers on this one. It's funky, upbet and relentlessly danceable throughout. I did find it - much like a lot of Fela Kuti's output - somewhat one dimensional, lacking any particular dynamics beyond 'breaking down' and building back up again, which, even that, is somewhat rare on this album. Enjoyable, listenable, not particulary mind blowing.

I'll start of by saying that a lot of the live versions are not going to be as good as studio versions. That being said I don't think I would want to listen to the studio versions either. It's not terrible but it's certainly very hard to listen to. Black Man's cry is very goofy sounding, and I can't tell if he is speaking a language or gibberish. The random screams are kind of good though, I feel like these songs would be great for sampling. The drum solo is not doing anything for me. I don't actually like drum solos unless they're like aphex twin flim.

Just started this album and I don't think Afrobeat is going to resonate with me. Very repetitive at times. Yeah, not doing much. The Drum Solo song is just that. Too long, not even that interesting. This album may have had some cultural importance 50 years ago but it's nothing special, maybe not even good. This does nothing for me as a casual first-time listener and might even push me away from the genre.

Fairly repetitive but I have never listened to music like this. The tracks with Ginger Baker sound different from the others in a good way. Possibly my first experience with music from the early 70's and was probably a banger back then. Very long songs almost like a jam band style. Losing interest around the 30 minute mark. I really lost interest but did manage to finish. Just not an album I would play ever again. Will give this a 2.

Good musicians, just not for me

I always struggle with live albums. I find them a little distracting. Did not enjoy this as much as the Fela Kuti studio record I heard earlier in the experience

Noted psychopath Ginger Baker’s appearance on this album doesn’t really mean anything. It’s just as good, or not good, as any other African jazz/jam project. Most of these tracks could’ve had any drummer playing on them and sounded just the same. That said, it’s pretty par for the course in this genre. I felt the musicians on stage had a good time, and that’s fun. Not the most mind expanding thing you could listen to. This is the 3rd of 4th live album I’ve run into from this list, and I’m starting to question each one that’s been here. I have no problem with live albums, but with the quantity of good music out there, are these the records that we need to hear before we die?

I just don't understand the music. Great musicians but lots of repetition and it's really had to engage throughout the whole album.

Eh, I wasn't super impressed with this album. It had a lot of repetition, without being super interesting. I wasn't a big fan of the vocals. For me the best thing on this was the recording quality, which is pretty good. All in all probably wouldn't listen to this again.

I enjoyed previous Fela Kuti releases, but this one is just for real drum lovers. It's nice to have a so specific kind of album in the 1001 list, but it's not for me.

Interesting to hear Fela Kuti interact with the crowd. The first 4 songs are enjoyable, nots of jazz with a terrific rhythm section backing them up. Ginger Baker drum solo on the final track drags, I seen many drum solo's in my time and never have I wanted a drum solo to not end.

Yeah ok, interesting at a number of levels. The rhythms are great, he's bowerbirded a range of influences to very good effect, including listening to a lot of JB. It's sounds like a great night out, if a bit samey. I didn't get to listen to the Ginger 16 minute drum solo bonus track, but I can just imagine... It was worth a listen.

All instruments. Very weird. I know it’s live but… not my thing.

There's obviously talent here, but this was kinda long and kinda boring to listen to for me. I mean, the average song length is, like, ten minutes and the shortest song on here is seven minutes long. There is a 16 minute song on here that is just a drum solo, which I think is a bonus track, but I listened to it, so I'm gonna complain about it. Not really my thing, but I respect it. Kind of shocking that I didn't like it that much, considering it's funk and soul, but there wasn't much energy in this music, so I guess it didn't connect with me. My favourite song was Ye Ye De Smell.

As much as I like Fela Kuti, this isn't an essential record of his. Just like with his other records, you get just a handful long jazzy afrobeat compositions which are all good and I'd kill to see live, but nothing here is extraordinary. We have yet to see from Kuti could pull off in the likes of Zombie, Confusion, or Expensive Shit. "Zombie" for example was an excellent pop track inviting the audience to dance and sing with memorable hooks, and I'm not seeing much of that here. I will admit that Ginger Baker, the drummer of Cream, is an incredible addition and blew me away a few times. These pieces feel more jammy and improvised with a raw live sound. My favorite track here is the groovy and funky "Black Man's Cry."

Wow! Amazing rhythms. The energy! Not something I'd listen to every day, but wow.

If you had me choose between jazz and afro beats, I'd pick this vibe over jazz. I like the danceability. Fela is a complicated dude for me to really like because of his 27 wives. This is getting a lower rating because while I really like the vibe, it sounds like one long song.

Jam bands are just not my jam. Maybe these guys aren’t a jam band, but this is definitely a jam bandy album. I like songs to have a something to say and get to the point…in and out, which can be drawn out so long as there is continually something more to say. I must distinguish my feelings about this album and other albums with very long songs because I’m sure it will come up down the line. A song can be quite long and continue adding to its point view throughout. For instance, Dylan’s Visions of Johanna is a master piece of poetic storytelling that feels far too short at 7:30. Also, I just listened to Jimi Hendrix’s 15 minute long Voodoo Chile (studio version) and it was engaging throughout. The difference for this album is that the jamming sounds like directionless noise generated just because they could. A good life lesson: just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I get that this is a live album so there is likely some detriment to not being in the audience. But still, there are other live albums I love listening to at home. I swear I can hear Ginger and Tony loosing interest in what’s going on several times throughout Ginger Baker And Tony Allen Drum Solo. Listen again to around the 7:15-7:45 mark…they don’t want any part of this. No one needs a 16 minute drum solo unless your name is Bonzo (Bonham) or Neil (Peart), and even then I hesitate to claim they could keep it interesting for that long. I do like some of the music, especially the big horn parts. Some of the bass and keyboard parts are worthwhile. Way too much jamming for me.

This album just really went on forever.....if I had to choose one song I really couldn't as they were pretty much all the same to my mind. The ones with the voice talking, undulating, screaming etc just made it all worse and it was pretty bad in the first place.
