Not the same impact as Nevermind and I remember a slight disappointment at the time, but still a classic.
This album did not really grab me, despite a few good moments.
This is my second favourite Nirvana album. Heart-Shaped Box and Pennyroyal Tea are timeless classics, but a few other tunes on this album just go so hard - Very Ape and Milk it in particular. Raw music
This was an amazing album, among the best of its era. Sadly, it's also one of the band's best and an indicator of where Nirvana might have been headed musically had things turned out differently. The songs are stunningly crafted and pretty perfect, but deliberately less polished than on Nevermind. Musically, the band is unforgiving in their delivery. It grinds, it burns and blisters, but also sometimes with an ear towards the melodic. Cobain's delivery flows effortlessly from insouciance to raging in a way I can't even compare to another artist. Lyrically, Cobain is brutal, clever, sarcastic, clearly in pain. I would just like to add that this is the second album I have reviewed in the past week by an extremely talented person who took his own life after the album I was reviewing came out, and it's a bummer, to put it mildly. Beautiful early-to-mid 90s memories with this one. Teenage years soundtrack. I would often swing back and forth between more extreme metal and grunge/alt-rock. I preferred this one to Nevermind as it sounds somewhat rawer, but I'd give 5-stars to both of them (and if you ask me, my actual favorite is Incesticide...).

Мастерство Грола попало здесь в надежные руки продюсера Стива Альбини, который при помощи записи на примерно тридцать микрофонов смог добиться рассеянного звучания установки. Ощущение, будто удары (особенно малый барабан) звучат как измененный стук капель дождя. Чувствуется, что альбом был создан таким, каким участники Nirvana и хотели его получить (о чем свидетельствует и то, что и лэйбл, и Альбини дали Кобейну и компании полную свободу творчества). О ЧЕМ: Лирика так же неоднородна и своевольна, как музыка, позволяющая себе затрагивать весь спектр тем и эмоций, интересующих и привлекающих музыкантов (в основном, конечно, Кобейна). Встречаются литературные отсылки к Парфюмеру и Стране теней. Все это только подчеркивает личностную ценность этих песен для Курта Кобейна. Трагичные истории в соответствии с общим концептом альбома прерываются гневными тирадами и возгласами, выражающими злобу Кобейна на СМИ. Всё здесь есть провокация, недоверие к нормам как таковым. Включая In Utero, вы оказываетесь посреди поля боя: неистовый панк ведёт безжалостную войну с поп-звучанием и псевдобитловскими мотивами. Альбом искренности. Тем печальнее наблюдать за тем, что происходит с наследием группы сейчас (шараут милому малышу с обложки Nevermind, который внезапно повзрослел). The hits are great (thus 4 stars), but the rest are meh.
I like the Albini production, and the bits where it goes a bit more weird e.g. Milk It and Scentless Apprentice.
Scentless Apprentice is really aggressive. It demonstrates the rebellion and angst of the grunge movement. Heart Shaped Box is quintessential Nirvana. Definitely an emotional and angry record overall. Lots to unpack. But All apologies as a closer - brilliant!

Simply sensational. Even after all these years. Almost every song absolutely kills it and it still feels as raw and as edgy as back then in 94.

I don't know man. Like I recognize this a really solid grunge album. But I don't really like grunge in general so I feel like my score for this will be lower than others. but I do really enjoy Heart shaped box and Dumb. All Apologies isn't too bad either. Not sure what sound they were going for when they made Tourette's but I don't care for it. But maybe that was the goal? who knows. Overall, I see it's value and worth in the genre itself. But I never fully understood the hardcore Nirvana Kurt Cobain thing. Decent music for sure though.

One of the best albums of the early 90s. All Apologies, Heart-Shaped Box, Pennyroyal Team, and Dumb are great songs. It just never gets old. Nirvana just takes you back to your youth and the music has aged really well. It was so ahead of its time, but at the same time, very much a product of the 90s.

Farmer Francis will have her revenge on Seattle. The first nirvana album i got into, so it will always be my favourite. It’s a pretty flawless album.
A couple radio friendly singles mixed by Scott Litt (REM) + that classic Albini engineered abrasiveness = a timeless classic. No apologies for giving this 5 stars babyyy!

One of the greatest albums of the '90s and possibly ever. Nirvana expanded their dynamics on this album which gives it more texture and shows that the band was not simply content to rehash Nevermind. This album hints at their Beatles and Pixies influence while incorporating elements of punk and hardcore music. Kurt Cobain was a master songwriter and an avid student of music.
For so long I was trying to determine whether to rate this 4 or 5. But then I realized I was trying to determine how whether it could match or surpass Nevermind. Nevermind is a masterpiece but is polished and poppy from start to finish. But this album is raw and punkish. Sure, the more popular songs have the sound and genius songwriting we're used to, as in "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies", but the majority is more personal to Cobain. Overall, the songs flow together as a whole better than Nevermind, but the comparisons stop there. There is a dramatic contrast between pop and punk, and you can never tell what the next song will sound like, it's that unpredictable. Take "Dumb" for instance. It sounds like it should be one of those poppy songs, and like "Heart-Shaped Box" or "Rape Me", you'd expect grungy soft sound followed by a loud and guitar-heavy chorus... but it never comes. And of course, this works perfectly with the subject matter and makes for a memorable experience. But even with these pop songs, there is a rawness found in the recording you would never find on Nevermind. This is all an attempt to sound more like the indie albums Cobain admired, like Pixies's "Doolittle." Most songs get real personal to Cobain, dealing with his partner, his daughter, his drug use, and the media. Beyond a few bands, I always found the grunge genre to be dull and uninspired, but Cobain is one of those few who can remind us what the genre is about. Not just being a social rebel, but finding a medium to express the grimy elements of our lives, both the happy and sad parts of it. I admire Cobain's determination to take total control of this album and produce something they truly want, instead of what the public expects. It doesn't end up as garbage. Instead we have an album that, despite all, holds itself up as one of the greatest albums of the decade.
Yummy needles
If this album's goal was to annoy me then it did its job well. I don't like this genre and this album solidified that fact for me. If I wanted something to make me go deaf with just straight noise, I'd pick this. Favorite track: All Apologies

Definitely the best Nirvana album. The songs are catchy and raw, and the instruments are peak 90's grunge. Kurt's anger and energy throughout the album help solidify it as the best Nirvana album for me. The worst thing about this album is that it's their last (studio album, at least). Highlights: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 12.
Not as good as i remember
What else is there to say about Nirvana's In Utero? Kurt's vocal performance is incredibly unique, the sound is raw, abrasive, and satisfying, and the lyrics are honest, edgy and epic. It was Nirvana's attempt to create a sound that is less easily understood by the mainstream public than Nevermind was, but I would argue that it makes for a much more compelling and interesting record. I do clearly prefer some tracks over others, and that mainly has do to with the vocal mixing which is perfected on Serve The Servantrs, Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, Pennyroyal Tea, and All Apologies. 4/5.
Obscure gem
I never listened to Nirvana with the exception of the songs that were on the radio. I could not make it thru the screaming in the 2nd song. Why does almost every album on this list have a lead singer that is always SCREAMING?! Ugh. I'm starting to doubt the validity of this list...
If Kurt Cobain wanted a more un-polished and un-refined record than Nevermind, I think they successfully accomplished this without a doubt. In Utero is possibly the quintessential grunge/garage rock albums of the early 90s. At times the raw sound could be a little grating, but looking past those couple of tracks, it's one to have a good head-banging sesh to. Best: Heart-Shaped Box; Pennyroyal Tea Worst: Scentless Apprentice; Radio Friendly Unit Shifter

I'm not much of a fan of grunge music. I didn't like this album much but there were a few good songs. 2/5 stars for this one.
One could call this album the epitome of grunge music or it could simply be known as alternative rock. Either way, Nirvana went out with a bang with this album and it rocks! Personally it's not my type of music, but I respect the work of the artists.

I've never listened to Nirvana before. It's really astounding how it grabbed my attention (I'm listening to this at 2am after working late) because holy shit I really savoured this like I haven't for other music in the past. Goddamn
My appreciation of Nirvana has definitely increased since the last time I went out of my way to listen to them, largely due to their support of the Riot Girl movement. I wanted to go through the lyrics but didn't end up having time. All in all, really enjoyed this album! They're a well rounded sound. Spotify's algorithm successfully erased whatever edge I gained from listening to this ablum in full by putting on Weezer's Island in the Sun directly after. Well played, Spotify. Well played.
Disappointing. Not heard a Nirvana album before, so was excited. But it was boring & the singer's voice grated with me. Forgettable

I went through a short Nirvana phase as a teenager, but I've never been a huge fan. And as a pathetic snob, the hype around Nirvana/Kurt put me off revisiting. I don't remember much about this album compared to their other two... Pleasantly surprised! I like the noise rock elements and the more distorted/discordant moments more than the "standard grunge" sound I remembered. This album has aged well for me, and I enjoy it more now than I did in the past.
Surprising, but I don't have much to say about this record. Steve Albini's production is big, Kurt Cobain wears his heart on his sleeve and the sound went on to inspire countless copycats. But almost nothing on this record stood out to me, which was a strange experience, as I was expecting a lot more from a recorded that was lauded by many of my music friends in university. I've been a Nirvana skeptic for as long as I've known them. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to approach their music with an open mind and try to take it on its on merits. And I did try. Unfortunately, this record did almost nothing for me. Sure, the band sounds *huge* in a way that became inescapable for most alt-rock bands to follow. And Kurt may have the soul of a poet, but the musical translation of his painful disaffection is a dreary slog that I find almost impossible to appreciate or relate to. These songs seem to mostly bleed and blend together to my ear. Maybe it's a generational issue. Then again, there's tons of other 90s bands I love. For now, I remain unmoved. But maybe the additional Nirvana records on this list will make a deeper impression. Nostalgic but didn't enjoy as much as I expected.
The first time I listened to this I thought I was about to listen to a live album and that Utero was the name of a city. I'm glad it wasn't.

As a massive ‘fuck you’ to the music industry the is an unapologetically brutal album and a brilliant one at that. When I’m Utero came out I struggled to love it it in the way I did their two previous albums and only really appreciated as I got a bit older. Personally I still don’t rate as highly as Nevermind nor does it hold a place in my heart in the way that Bleach does. It’s lacks a bit of the rawness of their debut and - couple of obvious exceptions aside - lacks the overall strength of songs of Nevermind- but still an amazing album

Lots of rock stars scream about how difficult it is, how they can’t be their true selves, how the system eats them up but very few deliver something this gutteral and beautiful. Make no mistake this is a real album about rock star angst. About feeling like you’ve sold your soul and trying to stay true to your craft. Just read the first line of the album “Teenage Angst has paid off well” It’s a thing of wonder that I didn’t fully appreciate until I was a bit older. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It has always been a strange one for me regarding Nirvana. I do like a few tracks but generally, I'm not the biggest fan. It's a similar story with this album. 'Heart-Shaped Box' is a tune that I have liked for a while but it doesn't blow my socks off. The controversial 4th track 'Rape Me' actually has a good instrumental to it but I find myself struggling to enjoy it for obvious reasons. I've seen that it is supposed to be an anthem that defies rape from the point of view of the victim; however, as much as this song seems to have good intentions, I could imagine it being an extremely difficult listen for an actual victim regardless of the context, especially with the pretty barbaric ending. Anyway, for a few notable tracks such as 'Heart-Shaped Box', I'll give this one a 2/5 overall.

Bad and then at 'Rape Me' it got so much worse. I've looked into why the song was written but for me the song is completely unacceptable and was horrible to listen to.

He sent an album I owned them listen to a lot. This is it. It’s interesting in that well it’s a bit of a reversal of the direction the band was going. They seem to never mind was a little more user-friendly for the General population. Definitely not pop but more user friendly. In neutral reverse the trend and got back to the grunge. They recall that a lot of stores required this CD not to be publicly displayed because the words “rape me “Ronit. Not sure if the Justin Bieber loving authorities we’re grouping the grunge guys with the skinheads and I thought that the song was endorsing glorify and rape. The words make it obvious that that wasn’t the case. I can’t think of better words to show how a victim feels than the words “I love to lick your open sore. I just can’t forget I can’t imagine ever forgetting those words. Nirvana most had the originality to continue to be listenable and.
Basically if you take Nickelback, then dip them in a vat of crack and meth you get Nirvana. While I think the guitar riffs are really cool, I don't like how they fit with Kurt's voice; as soon as his voice comes in I'm like ah shit stop singing. I love counterculture music and Nirvana do have some better songs on other albums, but just never been able to appreciate this band in particular. Knew a few of these songs but I always prefer non-singles, which weren't decent enough to save this album for me.
At one time, I played the grooves off of this album... upon re-listening, I'm not sure it stands up to the passage of time. Maybe it's because the guitars are mixed too loud, or maybe I have become a geezer.
This is the best of it's genre and an extremely important album to boot. It's style, sound, and substance was huge, managing to enjoy mainstream success while also resonating with music nerds of the day (and today). To top it all off, it managed to do this while being the follow-up to the darling Nevermind, and it still rocks. Oh, and it has Albini production. Nirvana forever.

In utero is a Latin term literally meaning "in the womb". In biology, the phrase describes the state of an embryo or fetus. In legal contexts, the phrase is used to refer to unborn children. Under common law, unborn children are still considered to exist for property transfer purposes. I give this album three properties! (just land, no structures)

Finally felt like getting back into listening to these albums but decided I'd go through the ones I've heard before and wanted to re-listen to. This one is still good!
I hoped I might like like this as I didn't mind the Nirvana Unplugged album and 'In Utero' is often compared to 'The Holy Bible'. However, it is nothing like either of those and is back to Nirvana's usual humourless, tuneless dirge.

5. Seems like a fairly good Nirvana album, but can't say I love Nirvana.
By the time grunge hit the scene, I had been listening to metal, punk & post-punk for nearly two decades, so I dismissed it as a louder, raunchier version. Of course, some of the anthems cranked out by Nirvana caught my attention, but their riffs and choruses get recycled a lot on this later album. I like some of this album’s more melodic tracks like “Heart Shaped Box”, but I find the overall sound too limited and familiar.

Deutlich krasser und wilder in Erinnerung gehabt, kommt mir der „Nevermind“ Nachfolger plötzlich so kalkuliert bieder vor. Ein Wechsel aus Pop Songs und programmatischen Noise Punkrock. Bei „Scentless Apprentice“ kann ich einfach nicht anders als am Anfang die Drums des Grohl‘schen spin off Foo Fighters‘ „My Hero“ wieder zu erkennen. Bezweifle, ob dieses Album heut für annähernd ähnliche Furore sorgen könnte. Ich trink erstmal meinen Lieblings Tee: Pennyroyal 2.9
Spät am Tag, und zu diesem erstaunlich unpolierten Abschiedsbrief turned Dreckpunk, (Fuck You All Ich Hab Kein Bock Mehr!) ist ja nun alles gesagt. Und sagt es auch selbst: Rape me, I hate myself and I want to die. I feel you, Kurt.

Three or four classic Nirvana songs. I really enjoyed this album back in the day and I still enjoy it now. Not as gritty as their first album, but great nonetheless.

I've never given Nirvana the credit other people do. I think it was just a metal kid's resentment towards grunge? Maybe it was thinking Dave Grohl made better music in Foo Fighters? But this album rules! || It might also be because I have a higher base stressed-out level these days, but the raw tones and attitude in the all of the tracks just seems to resonate and feel comforting. || Never knew it was recorded in Goodhue County, literally one over from where I grew up in Dakota County! doesn't mean much, but neat! ||

I've gone against Nirvana as a matter of principle my whole life - but I actually like this a lot. Heart Shaped Box and Rape Me are overplayed but Serve the Servants and Scentless Apprentice are kind of awesome. Looking at the lyrics while listening gives me a new appreciation for Cobain. I feel like this album has had its dick sucked for so long I didn't want to like it... but it's angsty and uncomfortable and dark. Great listen.

This album is better when played as a whole rather than as several disconnected singles. It is clear that this record was meant to evoke a visceral response in the listener. From the opener, Serve the Servants to the closer All Apologies this record is meant for movement but is at it's heart disturbing emotionally.

It's nowhere near as good as Nevermind IMO, but still has a few good tracks here and there. A lot of stuff on this album isn't really my cup of Pennyroyal Tea ;)

Well it was time for Nirvana and their 1993 album 'In Utero.' I can go back to 1993 in New Jersey, and my roommate had a monster sound system in his car. Whenever I would travel with him around the city of Glassboro - the music would be thumping. Like the many jackasses you see driving around with the stereo that makes everything on the car shake. This is where I started hearing In Utero for the first time. Nevermind had landed and Nirvana was the biggest and best band in the world at the time. It felt like at the time, In Utero was a bit of a disappointment for fans who wanted another Nevermind served up on a platter. Listening to this now, its difficult to listen without the overwhelming history associated with this band. I think honestly, I was focused more on Nirvana Unplugged in NY when it came out in 1994. The stripped down accessibility really appealed to me more than the angry noise that comes from being the biggest and most misunderstood rock star in the world. Still a pretty monumental achievement when looking backwards at this band.

Great album with many of my favourite songs from Nirvana. Unfortunatelly there are a couple duds here that make me rate it not as high as I would like to.
Definitely has nothing on Nevermind, but decent songs throughout. I'm not a huge fan but it's not bad.
Just missed 5 stars. Sadly, Nirvana's last album before Cobain died.

Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021. What a pleasant surprise! Nirvana's "In Utero" starts as I expected, Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, and all that, which I've always appreciated but never really felt on any deep level. Once we get to Very Ape, however, I think the album takes a positive turn. It's heavy with a unique energy. Prior to this I hadn't sat through a full Nirvana album, and while I do not think I'd sit through another, I very much enjoyed this B-Side and could see myself returning to a few a these tracks. It was nice hearing some tracks beyond your typical edge-lord grunge Nirvana hits and I think I gained a deeper appreciation for the band. All Apologies is a great ender, and while I've enjoyed the song before, it hits just a little bit different closing out this album. 8/10 for me. Lost points for making me hear HSB and RM again, which I could have done without. Bonus points for every single B-Side track going real hard.
Kurt Cobain's powerful vocals and guitar mark this album of the cornerstones of grunge culture
Not a big fan of this album. A little too gritty and messy for me. On re-listen it is better than I remember, but I wouldn't give it many plays
3-stars in you're not into Grunge, 5-stars if you are.

Really good album all the way through.
I see Dave Ghrol's influence now more than in the past. Not a grunge fan that hasn't changed. And this is not Never mind.
Has some of Nirvana’s great tracks on it, as well as some underrated bangers. 4/5
More shouty than I recall but less tuneful as well. Like the production/sound.
Could not get through a single song & the 2/3 that I did get through were a painful struggle. Perhaps I'm just not into "grunge" but this album was not appealing. With that being said, I did somewhat enjoy heart-shaped box & dumb.
я признаю Кобейна как культовую для общества культуру, но как музыкант он не раскрыл свой потенциал полностью. эта работа показывает Нирвану и всех ее участников с новой стороны: структуры песен стали сложнее, а вокал Курта куда агрессивнее. Также, определенно, я не могу не выделить введённые эксперименты с гитарным звуком в «Milk It», в котором не перегруженная акустическая гитара звучит будто фри-джазовая импровизация, и «Radio Friendly Unit , в котором время от времени появляющееся электро-гитара создаёт, как не странно, эффект радио. это звучит весьма интересно, особенно для группы. подводя итог, я не нахожу этот альбом шедевром, как и Nevermind или Bleach, но тут творческий запал группы на ее коротком пути смог раскрыться на полную: он полон действительно хороших и великолепных песен, но в них есть элементы, вызывающие вопросы. С критической точки зрения было бы крайне любопытно услышать продолжение развития группы, но приходится радоваться лишь этому. 8/10.

A little chaotic at times, but I suppose that was intentional. Unfortunately it did not help my headache. Kurt Cobain really is something unique, though. 3.5

9/10. no idea why this site wants me to listen to so much 90s music but im not complaining. seriously like half of these fucking albums have been 90s. what the hell! anyway this album is great. i wrote a more serious "review" on my rym top 200 list but aside from scentless apprentice this is super good and connects with me kinda hard. probably needs a relisten!
This album is a banger. I love how the first song just bursts out with dissonant shit, as if to say ha ha check this shit after our last poppy, clean, kazillion-selling album. I can't honestly say I prefer it to nevermind, but the highs are up there imo. Heart shaped box, rape me, dumb, eeaaasily among their best. 4/5.
