Reviews (page 14 of 14)
Could only accommodate Dumb on this album and I would be so very if I were to revisit.
ok
Bit too shouty for me
At the risk of sounding like my Dad, this is mostly just a racket.
Ngl I’m just not into Nirvana music for the most part. I do like Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies but I already heard these songs before.
It was novel and interesting, but not entirely to our liking
90s stuff. Meh
Bleh. Nirvana is another one of those bands that probably deserves more credit than I give them. I just never really got into their particular flavor of grunge, similar to Pearl Jam. As such, this album only scores 2 stars for me.
Some songs have meh screamo segments.
It’s the same as any other 90s grunge album.
2.75
Not their best...
Very grungy, high distortion guitar and vocals. Scentless Apprentice being one of the most egregious offenders, being particularly warped near the end. The song 'Rape Me' was particularly uncomfortable and I didn't feel as though it was sonically unique or profound enough to illicit such gross lyrics. I liked 'All Apologies' though.
One or two good songs - Heart-shaped Box and Dumb were good, but found a lot of the album very screechy
- Seemed unfinished and unpolished - Nice lyricism on Kurt's part
Grunge/hårdrock. Inget för mig.
Det bästa som kommit ur denna grupp är ett jävligt based självmord
I did my time with Nirvana and never really completely understood the love. This continues to this day.
I never listened to Nirvana with the exception of the songs that were on the radio. I could not make it thru the screaming in the 2nd song. Why does almost every album on this list have a lead singer that is always SCREAMING?! Ugh. I'm starting to doubt the validity of this list...
I'm not much of a fan of grunge music. I didn't like this album much but there were a few good songs. 2/5 stars for this one.
Surprising, but I don't have much to say about this record. Steve Albini's production is big, Kurt Cobain wears his heart on his sleeve and the sound went on to inspire countless copycats. But almost nothing on this record stood out to me, which was a strange experience, as I was expecting a lot more from a recorded that was lauded by many of my music friends in university. Rating: 1.5/5 Fav track: All Apologies
I've been a Nirvana skeptic for as long as I've known them. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to approach their music with an open mind and try to take it on its on merits. And I did try. Unfortunately, this record did almost nothing for me. Sure, the band sounds *huge* in a way that became inescapable for most alt-rock bands to follow. And Kurt may have the soul of a poet, but the musical translation of his painful disaffection is a dreary slog that I find almost impossible to appreciate or relate to. These songs seem to mostly bleed and blend together to my ear. Maybe it's a generational issue. Then again, there's tons of other 90s bands I love. For now, I remain unmoved. But maybe the additional Nirvana records on this list will make a deeper impression. Hot take #1: In Utero (and perhaps Nirvana itself) is less than the sum of its parts Hot take #2: Hole is (so far into this journey) a better band Rating: 2.5/5 Favourite songs: Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies
Lots of screaming. I like "Heart-Shaped Box"...other than the songs I know as singles, way too much screaming...awful
Move along, nothing to see here. Boring, angsty grunge shite. Kurt's voice is boring and samey. Best song "Heart Shaped Box". Worst song " Rape Me". Sad bastards.
It has always been a strange one for me regarding Nirvana. I do like a few tracks but generally, I'm not the biggest fan. It's a similar story with this album. 'Heart-Shaped Box' is a tune that I have liked for a while but it doesn't blow my socks off. The controversial 4th track 'Rape Me' actually has a good instrumental to it but I find myself struggling to enjoy it for obvious reasons. I've seen that it is supposed to be an anthem that defies rape from the point of view of the victim; however, as much as this song seems to have good intentions, I could imagine it being an extremely difficult listen for an actual victim regardless of the context, especially with the pretty barbaric ending. Anyway, for a few notable tracks such as 'Heart-Shaped Box', I'll give this one a 2/5 overall.
I hoped I might like like this as I didn't mind the Nirvana Unplugged album and 'In Utero' is often compared to 'The Holy Bible'. However, it is nothing like either of those and is back to Nirvana's usual humourless, tuneless dirge.
By the time grunge hit the scene, I had been listening to metal, punk & post-punk for nearly two decades, so I dismissed it as a louder, raunchier version. Of course, some of the anthems cranked out by Nirvana caught my attention, but their riffs and choruses get recycled a lot on this later album. I like some of this album’s more melodic tracks like “Heart Shaped Box”, but I find the overall sound too limited and familiar.
Probably 2.5 perfectly fine
Noisy and angry
Contains 2 classics but I didn't like any of the rest
Some pretty bad songs but some good ones too
It's nowhere near as good as Nevermind IMO, but still has a few good tracks here and there. A lot of stuff on this album isn't really my cup of Pennyroyal Tea ;)
Oof
A few good songs but if this is their best I don't get the hype
I see Dave Ghrol's influence now more than in the past. Not a grunge fan that hasn't changed. And this is not Never mind.
It was a hard time
Noise-complaint "music"
C'est un non pour moi
I tried. I just can't. Lost me at the screaming "rape me" over and over.
Pretty shit album. Bad. No, terrible
I literally said thank god that's over at the end of it.
Yet more shite. Absolutely abysmal.
My ears hurt and I’m bored
Unfamiliar with Nirvana, yeah I'm old, I looked forward to a chance to check them out. Sorry to say, this eas a big disappointment.
First nirvana album ever!! First exposure to nirvana in general I think. Other than the obvious. Oh. Why does it sound like that. This shit is not nirvana. Oh ok. Yeah ok so I don't like this. I've never been a big grunge kinda gal so idk. This feels a little bit like there's a cheese grater through my ear on my brain. Not for me. I'm glad they've resonated with so many people but I just don't think I'm the target demographic. And I'm ok with that. This is just music to listen to when you wanna kill yourself. What? I don't really wanna do this. It feels like the "art" an edgy kid would create to make their refusing to seek help valid in the face of their suffering. I really don't like this. It feels like a cry for help he knows will go unanswered. Idk. Not for me. Favourite: I guess Pennyroyal Tea Least favourite: Rape Me
not my style at all
no me gustó, el inicio de la primer canción te da expectativas, pero despues, malaso, definitivamente no es el rock que me gusta, no hay ninguna canción pasable
Meh
I don’t like it
Cool, muy "metalero" para mi, Heart-Shaped Box mi favorita, Tourette's la que menos me gustó. Escucharía de nuevo Dumb y Frances Farmer.
I feel guilty for not liking nirvana but I will never actually enjoy grunge and I don’t think there’s anything that will change that unfortunately.
I think its not my type of music, the lyrics are really harsh in terms of content and the story it tells and i rely on that alot.
i don't like grunge
Didn't like most songs. But if Rock Music is what it is Today, then it had to start from somewhere. not here though.
I am familiar with Nirvana, but this isn’t my type of music. I just don’t enjoy it that much.
Hot take but I feel like this album is severely overrated.
sounds like drugged out rage
I have this. Was a fan of Nirvana, but not so much now.
Kut Cobain
Not my type of music at all
negative stars if i could
Nirvana wasn't that good, he just did a lot of drugs. Well me too, bitch
Hated every moment of this - least favourite genre of music (‘grunge’)
Nope. 1/5, 1/10
Not for me. Screaming vocals very irritating.
This is a biased opinion i don't like screaming thank you
Strikeout
was about to rate it a 4 until i saw the song rape me i don’t play about weird song titles
I tried. I really did, but it is literally to loud and screechy for my ears. One star
Couldn’t get through listening to this album.
Dirge
Ich wusste nicht, dass man mit gestimmten Instrumenten solch schreckliche Musik machen kann - (Keine Shotgun-Witze im Internet)
Can’t even get through a song I actually just rly don’t like Nirvana
To be fit I didn’t listen to it fully but I’m just into that type of metallurgy loud music
Not really my taste of music but I did enjoy Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies
Screaming. Headbanging
Not my vibe , I tried to listen to it but I couldn’t get into it
Two listens.
Shit
Not good. Not my genre though.
An over correction to the sound that made them famous. The problem is other bands made this type of music earlier and better.
Ääh. Sama juttu kun Metallican kanssa. En vaan voi sietää Nirvanaa. Ei ole koskaan toiminut, eikä toiminut nytkään. Urhoollisesti kuitenkin kuuntelin loppuun asti, vaikka tämä ihan sietämätöntä sekoilua olikin. All Apologies on ainoa omaan korvaan ihan hyvä kappale.
Did not enjoy at all
Scentless Apprentice - wtf was that song, how can anyone like that? Not my vibe
I do not like Nirvana anything.
boo-urns
Man, absolutely could not stand this, even worse than nevermind. I genuinely really wish I appreciated this band more but this has taught me that I do not and cannot.
I have never liked Nirvana. And now, I know it's because of the screaming. The song I liked best was Heart Shaped Box. But overall, I hated it
Wrong era for music for me. I was up to my eye balls with kids, home, trying making ends meet. A lot of the 90s passed me by.
I tried. 1
I think I would probably have been blown away by Nirvana in my 20s or 30s when grunge began; however, as a 65-year-old, this album did not do much for me.
pretvrdo za mene za sad :)
Strange
Not a fan of grunge this album was one of my least favorite, but I thought it would be a little more exciting to listen to since I heard such great things, but it was confirmation that I really do not like grunge.
I had Nirvana's live album already, and that was a total banger. This was....not. I much prefer their more polished songs than this noise. First half of the album is ok, except for Scentless Apprentice which is horrid and Rape Me which is decent. Then it just devolves into junk. The ending comes a little back up with the mediocre All Apologies. Can't wait until I get Nevermind. Best song: Rape Me
Really? Huh
I found the experience rather unpleasant, and it’s poetic that there’s a song titled Rape Me as that’s exactly what I felt this album did to my ears, at times. It’s really hard to take an album with such a song seriously, and I found very little in any other component of the music that could redeem that, nor could I discern any deeper meaning. Perhaps if I spent time reading the lyrics and background, sure, but that’s not exactly how music is supposed to be communicated and experienced, is it? I wouldn’t say it was bad, or completely unenjoyable, just very close. I wanted to enjoy it, truly, I went in very keen and even optimistic, but it was beaten out of me one track at a time. A few lyrics were good, like “I tried hard to have a father but instead I got a dad” in the opening track, but those few moments were lost in the sea of largely nonsensical screaming. I just plainly couldn’t understand what I was being subjected to and I fear its magic may have been a “you had to be there” moment, lost to time.
Never again, nearly gave me headache.
Please for the love of God don't make me listen to milk it ever again. 1/5 stars
The lows on this album are SO LOW. Trash. There's a stretch between Heart-Shaped Box and Dumb that's decent, and then All Apologies is good. Nirvana are overrated.
How did these losers get famous?
Отвратительно
I've never been a fan of Nivana or grunge music so this is a no from me dawg
Noise with occasional greatness.
This falls halfway between metal and punk, seemingly taking the less interesting bits of both. Found it all a bit sad and ploddy - punk for people who watch MTV.
Meh
No me gustó el disco
I got two songs in. It was all I needed to know.
My ears just got raped
-1 for sounding like off-brand Pixies, but without their distinctive weirdness and humor--like what if you sucked their soul out and replaced it with horny teenager energy. Not very original. I guess heart-shaped box is pretty good, but if it's the hit meant to redeem this album, it's woefully insufficient (All Apologies is also good, but better when covered by others). But in "rape me" (a dubious song to begin with) they quote the "smells like teen spirit" riff--which they already stole from Pixies U-Mass! Makes me wonder if Nirvana really just put everything they had into Nevermind, with no ideas left for the rest of the work
Grunge was a particular time in the American music scene. It should stay that way.
There are those who criticised some of the albums on here for being too polished. Well that isn't the case here. I base this opinion on the fact that you can't polish a turd. For that it what this album definitely is. With the one exception of Heart Shaped Box, this album is the biggest load of crap I have listened to in a really long time. Compered to yesterday's offering, well it's a case of from the sublime to the ridiculous. Can only be a 1, because there is no zero. Apparently this was a statement against producing music purely for commercial purposes. Fair play you're allowed to do that. But if you're not bothering to play the instruments to your talents, and you are just screaming at the microphone instead of using your sining ability I'm still going to say it's a steaming great turd.
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I simply do not connect with Nirvana. It sounds amateur with production, you can't understand a single lyric due to the mix and Cobain's complete lack of enunciation and the guitar sounds like a tin can full of wasps and doesn't work to be in a way that works for me. I think Cobain was an okay to good writer but never found the way he delivered them to resonante with me, I tried to listen to the entirety of this album but just couldn't.
Pish
Nirvana sucks. Stop mythologizing this overrated high school garage band.
Another "of their time" thing. I get the impact that Nirvana had but I don't really feel it translate to modern sensibilities. I feel like I'm listening to a high school band. Fav Track: Heart-Shaped Box
Never liked Nirvana. Funny how they cite the Pixies as inspiration and I love the Pixies. This one was really hard to get through. Really disgusting music.
Is Nirvana the most overhyped band ever? Probably not but is must be near the top 10. Utterly ghastly music and "singing".
Nope! You're wrong! Definitely did not need to hear this. Biggest load of sh 8te I've heard since I (accidentally) stood on the cat.
I didn’t love this one. Kurt Cobain’s singing was a bit pitchy, it didn’t feel the most musically interesting (I thought there were a lot of repeated riffs for example), and the lyrics didn’t grab me. I don’t think I’d listen again.
Pre-listening thoughts: oh gee nirvana! I’d act like I’m excited but I hate grunge sorry. I’ve heard heart shaped box from this album and that’s it. Post/during listening thoughts: yeah it’s exactly what I thought it would be. They’re fine musicians but I am just not a fan of this genre. This is what the average set at The Bronze in Buffy the Vampire slayer must sound like 2/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: dumb I guess Least fav tracks: senseless apprentice, rape me, milk it, Tourette’s
Not a fan, then or now.
This is the second Nirvana album I've encountered on this list and I'm beginning to think that I just do not like Nirvana. I don't like Kurt Cobain's voice, which sounds like it has three modes: bored, growling, or straight up screaming. They are all grating and annoying. The guitars and drums are noisy and unpleasant. It's loud for the sake of being loud. I'm not a fan of abrasive, brash music, and it's looking like I'm not a fan of grunge as a genre either.
Thought this was going to be my type of thing, but shit was I wrong Nirvana are for sure overhyped. This was terrible with maybe 2 good songs sprinkled in 1 ⭐️
Unlistenable dog shit
Maybe you have to be a teenager to like this. I found the whole album, outside of all apologies, which is a good song, to be a depressing slog. For the most part Kurt just seems to want us to know that he’s having a really bad time, not enjoying himself at all. Point taken.
over hyped
More noise than music
Kann ich nichts damit anfangen!
Absolutely not my vibe of music Suffering and depression vibe
Meh, hate his voice.
Utterly fucking dreadful.
Didn’t like this. It sounded too noisy and raucous. I give this 1 star.
I never gave Nirvana any real attention before (they came on the scene after my musical tastes were locked in), and this album certainly isn't going have me running to update my playlist. A song called "Rape Me?" Really?
Awful. Alternates between screaming and mumbling over background noisy distortion. Can't tell what the lyrics are so no comment on whether they were interesting
Lots of screaming.
Nirvana is loud. And I am Janna and I don’t like it
Only listened to half, this is not for me. Too heavy and rock for my liking
Not for me. I like the songs that were released as singles back in the 1990s more for nostalgia than anything else.
One of the worst things I’ve ever heard He’s just screaming
Too emo and grunge. Not something I'll listen to again.
Just not for me. Gave me a headache
Definitivamente Nirvana no es un estilo que me guste. En este disco hubo un par de temas que no me disgustaron (entre ellos Rape Me), pero nada memorable en mi opinión.
First impressions, not great. Sounds like a band in my neighbors garage. The second song screaming into a $19.99 lavalier microphone... It sounds awful. Ear rape is an expression I really want to use. Normally I’d be worried about being canceled but there is a song called “Rape Me” in this album which feels appropriate. The main signer sounds like he just had his wisdom teeth pulled and the novacaine hasn’t warn off. “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter” has some of the worst noises I’ve ever heard in a song. Crazy awful feedback that people somehow found enjoyable. This is music you listen too when you want to spite your parents while doing meth in an abandoned house. As I keep listening to this album it keeps getting worse. 1.3
There's just so much hype around nirvana and I don't get it.
no. just no.
What exactly was going on in the 90s that Nirvana got so popular? It just sounds so annoying.
Dreadful. Glorified singles band.
Nirvana fans like to claim this album is "raw" and "noisy" and less poppy than Nevermind, but while it maybe aims for that, it just falls flat. They're aiming for energy, just it all seems very carefully constructed, which boring, uninspired and recycled riffs, and it just ends up sounding boring. I'll admit that there are a few songs here that aren't as bad as the radio-friendly ones that I was familiar with (Rape Me, All Apologies and Heart-Shaped Box), but not by much, and a few of the others still lean into the sound of those three songs that I hate. I forgot every song as soon as it finished playing. The whole album is just boring and formulaic with the whole soft/loud thing. This is not really related to this album, but one thing that pisses me off the most about Nirvana is how everything about them is about pretending to be better than they are, both for the fans and the band themselves. They act like they're more raw and abrasive than they are (especially when it comes to this album), like they're more profound than they are, that they're less mainstream, less poppy, like they have more credibility than they actually deserve, like they weren't willingly part of the same music industry they pretended to hate and criticize. Fans like to claim this is the album that proves that Nirvana is more than the radio-friendly sellout pop band that made Nevermind, but that's just not true, and I don't understand why, of all bands, this is the one whose dick everyone has decided to suck for all eternity. If this album was made by another band, maybe it could have been a 2. But I'm docking a point because they're the most overrated band of all time.
The authentic rock sound they were looking for is great, if only they also had some songs to go with it.
Just not a big fan of grunge music. Dumb had some nice sounding parts but that song was the exception not the rule. Some of the songs in the middle of the album were tolerable but bookending songs like “tourettes” were hard listens. All apologies was nice and I added it to liked songs with dumb so at least the song didn’t leave the album with a bad taste in my mouth.
Dull, dreary. Might have been cutting edge at the time - but it feels sadly out of its era now. Not exciting at all (bar the one song)
Se eu quisesse ouvir alguém berrando eu ouvia as dúvidas na minha cabeça. A única estrela vai para All Apologies.
Bad and then at 'Rape Me' it got so much worse. I've looked into why the song was written but for me the song is completely unacceptable and was horrible to listen to.
kk
Kunne ønske det gikk an å gi 0. Adrenalinet koker når jeg hører Kurtern gnåle "Pennoroyal teeeeeaaaaaaaaa". Likte det når jeg var 15 da.
dame algo k me guste primer aviso
1/15/21
Could not get through a single song & the 2/3 that I did get through were a painful struggle. Perhaps I'm just not into "grunge" but this album was not appealing. With that being said, I did somewhat enjoy heart-shaped box & dumb.
Great
