Too heavy for me
I didn’t like Nirvana when they came out in high school, and I still don’t like them now. I know, I don’t know what’s wrong with me either, but I hated listening to this. I’m not gonna go as far as to say it’s BAD, but man. I just don’t get it.
I felt I couldn't appreciate the messages of the album fully due to the rock feeling overly hard and the lyrics difficult to understand. Favorite Track: All Apologies

my first repeat album from my other group, and it's a doozy. The songs get a little too repetitive for me, but bonus points because sonically it has that signature Nirvana excitement. Also how does Nirvana have only like 2 albums yet they still repeat guitar riffs? 2.5/5 down to 2

I have been depressed, I have lived in Washington state most of my life and boy do I sure not like Grunge. Much love and respect Kurt but not my jam.

I can see what they were doing by moving away from the “commercialism” of Nevermind but a step too far for me!
All the screaming
Maybe if if was 12 in 1991 I'd have got really into Nirvana. But by the time I was getting seriously interested in music in 1999/2000, it was hard to separate the actual songs from the cultural phenomenon. In the early 00s those lyrics of alienation, anger and pain seemed to clash with a fanbase of popular kids, rugby boys and bullies, with the very worst twats at school wearing that fucking hoodie. Tried a lot of times to get into this album and others and it's never really happened.
Music overall has an experimental feel mostly uses minor scales and relies on the percussion instruments to drive the music forward. There were sporadic synthetic notes / sounds that perhaps reference psychedelic experiences. Vocals are coarse and sometimes quite repelling; screams are frequently featured again with repelling effects. Lyrics convey strongly of angst and dread and despair, often simple and of little literary merit. The narratives conveyed in the lyrics are incomplete or tangential. The repeated lines however conveys very relatable sentiments .
Heart shaped box is iconic but not good enough to be saved. All the other songs are just really not my style. Didn’t even finish the album.

I know. My rating is probably blasphemy. Nirvana created modern rock but...for so much effort that they put into these tracks, some of these songs are just....terrible? Like unlistenable? I think that's why the unplugged session was so popular. Great lyrics, great music, but...I'm really...Tourette's? Radio Friendly Unit Shifter? Apparently Cobain wasn't happy with the success of Nevermind. Well, fuck man, then don't write listenable music.
I still stand by the fact that Nirvana would be a forgotten band in the 21st Century if Kurt Cobain was still alive. Other than three songs, the album consists of moaning, depression, depressive-moans, more moans, and grunts(which pretty much consists of the entire history of Nirvana). One of the most overrated bands of all time. Favorite Song: "All Apologies"
this one is tough because obviously this album is very famous and considered iconic to 90s music history but at the same time i can't help but wonder how much of that is as a result of Kurt Cobain's death and if we would view the album differently if he hadn't killed himself. obviously he was going through a lot and felt that it was important to use this album as a kind of exorcism or outlet, and you can definitely hear that in the songs, but that doesn't automatically mean that i like them or think he was doing anything unique or profound in the way he chose to express his pain. i didn't like when John Lennon screamed on Plastic Ono Band, and i don't like the screaming here either! there are some nice songs on the album, and i have a feeling that if i went more into Nirvana's back catalog i think there would be things i would like a lot more, but unfortunately for the most part this just wasn't for me
Kurt Cobain's delivery is brutal. There are a couple of interesting musical moments outside of that, but overall just not my style. Favorites - All Apologies
I'd have given this a 1, but there were worse albums. Also, I'm biased and hate this band.
A couple of good songs and a lot of noise.
The video for Heart-shaped Box messed me up as a religious kid. I appreciate them now, but I'm not clamoring to listen.
I’m not really a fan of Nirvana I guess.
I know I'm supposed to like Nirvana and all... but I just never have... Some would assert they should be respected, if not merely for their importance in music history... OK, but I'd argue the Huns were pretty important in European history - does that mean they deserve respect for it? Still, I'll give it a 2 since Eric Clapton didn't have anything to do with its production.

This is why I hated Nirvana. It's a bit of a mess. Seems he was trying for two albums one was a single friendly album in the vein of nevermind and the other album was a "sticking it to corporate greed" album and it just makes anything good in this just unlistenable as an album. I think by the MTV unplugged he had sort of resolved those two impulses. So it would have been interesting to see what the next album could have been. But this is just awful.

Hot take/unpopular opinion warning! You've been warned. I get what Nirvana are doing with this, it is a response to the commercial success of Nevermind (which I really enjoyed) so they went much less "radio-friendly" with this one. It's not for me though, I know it's considered their best but I don't resonate with it. I do appreciate the instrumentation and all albums on here are objectively good but not feeling it personally.
4/10…grunge / 90er rock
Nirvana's sound is something I usually appreciate a lot. That being said, I think this last album just didn't hit like Nevermind. Scentless Apprentice was SO difficult to listen to, it just sounded terrible. Heart-Shaped Box was the strongest track, which comes as no surprise -- it's the most listened to track on the album on Spotify. Overall, it's just not something that resonates with me and none of the tracks made it to my liked songs. 2/5.
Am I a Nirvana was a Greatest Hits Band™️ girl?? Or, at least, they’re a One Album Hit Band™️ for me. On the surface, In Utero should be a record for me. I like noise punk, I like “Heart-Shaped Box,” I even know this is a purposefully ✨uncommercial✨ album. I know who Steve Albini is! But listening to it, In Utero feels…forced. It doesn’t feel organically punk, or naturally abrasive. It feels like Kurt took some pretty good bones for some decent songs and actively sought out ways to muck ‘em up. And that’s….kinda lame. Kinda not punk. Kinda antithetical, isn’t it? Like, it’s pretentious to have the skillset of a genius songwriter and then add sloppy guitar solos and overblown effects. If those elements were added *during* the songwriting process, it would feel natural, but they sound tacked on throughout this album. What’s more, the majority of the “good” songs here sound closer to country-rock than anything I would normally gravitate toward. So even a song like “Frances Farmer,” which I like in context, is not a song I’m gonna revisit. Obviously, some of that Nevermind magic is still here. I do love “Heart-Shaped Box,” “Rape Me,” and this version of “All Apologies,” but like….that’s a greatest hits band??? If I had bought In Utero on release based off the singles, I would have traded it in. And I know that’s kinda the joke about In Utero in retrospect, but for me, it’s not because I don’t like this sound, but rather because I don’t like Nirvana doing this sound. And, frankly, maybe I don’t like Nirvana.
90s rock. Head nodding worthy riffing, but never been a fan of the vocal and the lyrics sucks. And fuck, that screaming on Scentless Apprentice is terrible. Terribly performed and the recording sounds like shit - it makes my ears bleed.
Wow, this was really bad. It was like subpar high school garage band music with either mumbling or screaming on top of it.
Its Nirvana. Heart Shaped Box is the quintessential Nirvana sound and Rape Me was enjoyable although the actual lyrics are a bit too much for a Tuesday afternoon trying to get work done. It's good but I don't know that I need to come back to this.

I am exactly the right age for Nirvana - in high school when Nevermind came out, in college when In Utero came out. Their music permeated everything and was impossible to escape. I must have been one of the very few who couldn't stand it. Years later, I wouldn't say I hate their music. But it also hasn't grown on me.
Didn't know what to make of this. Was tempted to not carry on after the first two tracks which I thought were just a wall of incomprehensible noise. Then a much more melodic track came on so i carried on. Hit and miss for me , certainly not their best album

I almost like Heart-Shaped Box, Dumb
There's some good stuff on this album, but it's just a real shame because there's also some absurdly low low points on it. I've listened to it cover to cover quite a few times before, know most of the songs, and at times I found myself singing along to the chorus of "Pennyroyal Tea" or "Heart-Shaped Box". But also found myself covering my ears or getting really close to hitting skip on a bunch of songs. Songs like "Milk It", "Scentless Apprentice" and "Tourettes" are, no other way to say it, they're trash, they should've been cut. I'm gonna lay a lot of the blame at the feet of Steve Albini. This isn't the first CD Albini has fucked up, although it might be the one with the highest potential had he not been involved. It's telling that the best songs are the ones where he had the least involvement.
So…we can now say that this was pants, can’t we (RFUS aside. That’s just funny.)
I thought I would like this a lot more than I did. The singles were good, but seemed a lot softer and more melodic than most of the other tracks, which seemed obnoxious and loud and discordant. Two stars.
Consider myself a Nirvana fan but this album sucks. Some good songs but some horrific ones too.

ughhhh. While I can respect the impact Nirvana have had on music, they're the first band I've come across on this that I really wanted to turn off halfway through. However, "Heart-Shaped Box", "Pennyroyal Tea", and "All Apologies" were all decent listens. Deciding between 2 and 3 stars presented quite the dilemma. Go with my gut, basing it solely off the music I heard and give them two? Or try to claim that "I understood them" and give them three for street cred? Ultimately decided on the former. Nevermind is the only Nirvana album I can struggle through.
Definitely not into it like the other albums, but it has a cool album cover.

Not a big fan of this style of music. I like their song with less crazy guitar. I did like hearing Dave Grohl on drums. I prefer the Foo Fightere
This was just ok. Didn’t care for the murkier songs.
I know Nirvana ‘s hit singles, like anybody else alive in the 90’s. And much as I enjoy a few of them, had never bothered to listen to this full album. Frankly, I’m disappointed. Heart Shaped Box is a great song, but I really didn’t enjoy most of this album. The mythology of Curt Cobain isn’t a reason for me to give it extra stars.

Not as good as Nevermind, but er- well- hmm- oh never mind. Fun head banging music for people in dire need of a good therapist. Scary cool album cover. Probably wouldn't listen again, one or two catchy songs.

I really like some Nirvana songs but I don’t think I enjoyed any of this. I’ll say it - not the drummer’s best work.
I don't like Kurt's voice, and other than a few songs, I find this quite boring to the point I'd rather listen to something else. I don't know if this is a case of an influential band spawning other bands that improved on the style, but it feels like it.

The screaming in Scentless Apprentice made me want to DNF. Heart-Shaped Box & All Apologies was pretty good. Honestly, the whole thing made me a little anxious. Not for me!

I thought Nirvana was supposed to be good but this is kind of poo poo and I was happy when the album ended.
Minor heresy: I've never really understood what the level of fuss around Nirvana was about. I like the slower ones and the unplugged record which I guess that marks me as some sort of softie. Some of the harsher tracks I find quite formulaic, albeit with extra abrasive delivery and lyrical content. Don't get me wrong, I can see that this is a good album from a strong band, it's just not one I'll voluntarily sit through for pleasure.

I rate it a 2/5 because a lot of the songs sounded similar and it wasn't an album I could bop my head to, however I did like that he was brave enough to include such a controversial song and was not afraid to use the words rape me in a defiant way. J am a huge fan of the album cover, the art is fantastic, however as much as I wanted to enjoy the music, I did not.
You know what? I didn’t know this album and I was really hoping to be wowed by it. I wasn’t. Grunge dirge.

This is a Brutal listening experience which I used to like. Again, I have heard it Too Many Times already. 1001 seems like it is a project for someone who either Missed the past few decades or has recently woken up from a coma. Please, suggest some obscure stuff that has escaped my attention SOON or I will have to abandon this exercise.

I like some of Nirvana's songs, but this album only had 2 songs I would ever want to hear again in my life (Heary Shaped Box, All Apologies). There were no stories told, only 45 minutes spent inside the tormented brain of Kurt Cobain.
I liked 2 of the songs. Not really my first choice to listen to. Heavy metal.

Although there are a few tried and true classics on this album, the majority of it made me feel old as I felt it was just messy noise making.
grunge rock isn't really my genre, nor is nirvana a band that i enjoy. meaning never is something i seek in a song (and i assume in utero is one of those albums), generally it just needs to please my ears, and this album hasn't really done it for me. dropped the album halfway through, couldn't bother 4/10

Liked the intros to most of the songs but many transitioned I to scream sining which was a little to intense for my taste.
You know, as much as I love Nevermind this really wasn't my jam. I mean, I get it, and I love the artistic courage of following up the best grudge album with a more punk-focused release. But it just didn't work for me.

After already listening to an hour and ten minutes of grunge for the previous listing, it was interesting to compare the two. The droning melodic choruses on many of the songs actually helped me feel grounded and focused, something I didn't notice in Superunknown. The more busy, screaming tracks were more hit or miss for me, with none as enjoyable as the hits from the album. This is the most I've listened to Nirvana at once, and I look forward to when I reach Nevermind. 5/10

Nevermind is so much better it's crazy. Of course it would have been a gargantuan feat to match Nevermind's brilliance, but the drop-off in quality is glaring. In Utero's songs are as tasteless, confused, and laughable as its album cover.

Angsty screaming with decent grunge rock behind it.

Definitely some nostalgic songs on here but a little too much grunge and distortion for me. I'd say I'm an average Nirvana fan but some of the songs I was tempted to skip because I wasn't into it at all. Heart Shaped Box and Rape Me are two memorable songs on here for me. 2/5
If I thought I had trouble understanding the lyrics of the average song, whoa boy, if I sing to this, it'll be Na-Na-Nas. For some reason I assumed that Nirvana was a lot more noise than music, but I'm happy that there is a lot more interesting music here that I thought. The instruments are relatively easy to distinguish from one another, and there are melodies and chords to listen to. There is still noise on this album and I think it's more than I prefer. It's not really my vibe. Like the music is good, and I think the lyrics are good, but it's not for me. It's a little too hard or a little too much distortion. Seems like everyone is talented on their instruments and together they make something notable, but it's not the type of music I prefer listening to.

This is a much harder-rocking, angsty Nirvana than the Nirvana of Nevermind and I frankly wasn’t a fan. I debated between a 2 or a 3 here just because there are 3 tracks on this album I really like and “All Apologies” might be my favorite of all Nirvana songs. But still, it’s not enough for me to save this album from the screaming, dissonant noise that makes up the majority of the album. I’ve always felt pretty meh on Nirvana and this album proves why.

Wow so so angsty and abrasive. Not my favourite sound but I can clearly clearly hear how this music has influenced a lot of music which I do love (maybe it's slightly softer and more melodical sounding and therefore more appealing to me). I was a bit triggered by the track named Rape Me and then when I tried to read into it a bit more before establishing an opinion, I found that KurtCobain said the album was not personal at all... so it was a bit of a dead end. I dno I can see what people love about this but it don't impress me much.

It's interesting to me that the modern equivalent of angst-fueled teenage garage punk music would be bedroom pop. Cannot say I enjoyed the 90's version of self-loathing music. Heart-shaped Box is a classic, but I think I actually prefer covers to the original.
90s kids hype this album wayyy to much. After listening to this shit I want to grab a shotgun too. Giving two stars because heart-shaped box is a 5 but the rest was so bad I couldn't finish the album.

Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint: I liked this album a lot more before I listened to the whole thing through. Sure, it has a couple of classics. “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” are among Nirvana’s best work, and while the band certainly has a spot on the grunge Mount Rushmore, let us not forget why. Nevermind graced us with not only the most famous phallus in history, but with a slew of bangers to boot. In Utero, on the other hand, disappoints. I thought “Scentless Apprentice” was going to give me an aneurysm. From the Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday” to the Beatles’ “Mean Mr. Mustard” to the Peppers’ “Rain Dance Maggie” and more there are a number of great rock songs named for their quirky protagonists, but “Frances Farmer” just doesn’t do it for me. “Milk It?” Fuck It. I anticipated “Tourette’s” would be tough to deal with, and my God, was I right. I have my doubts about the “Helter Skelter” story, but had Charles Manson waited another 25 years to do his worst and then pinned it on this album instead, I would have believed him. All this being said, I’ll give In Utero two stars for its two classics. But if being in utero included listening to this album for nine months straight, I’d probably just pray for an abortion.
Few Nirvana songs age well in my opinion. In Utero is no different.
This is the first album of my 1001 album journey. honestly couldn’t have started off worse as I’m not a fan of Grunge or hard rock. I’ve not listened to In Utero before, so I was only aware of Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies. These ended up being the only songs I didn’t mind plus Serve The Servants. For me the rest of the album was just noise.

Obviously I've heard "Heartshaped Box", "Rape Me" and "All Apologies" which I don't mind. But otherwise this is not my favourite album of Nirvana's. I much prefer Nevermind. This one just started to grate on me.

Had a couple of very recognizable tunes! It's a bit screechy for me for some of the tracks and some of the themes are a bit dated.
Ik heb dit in m'n jeugd ook altijd gemeden en blijf dat doen. Aantrekkelijk vent, die Kurt. En het akoestische optreden voor MTV was mooi, verder vind ik het geschreeuw.

All Apologies and Heart-Shaped Box are great, but they are the singles. I didn't relate to this as an album and found it kind of difficult to listen to overall so I guess it's just not my taste.

In the spectrum of grunge ranging from pop grunge to pure grunge, this is pretty much at the latter end. Not being a grunge aficionado, I can't appreciate it like others probably do. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
I hoped that listening to this again would make me finally "get" why people like Nirvana so much. I still don't.
Appreciate Cobain for what he's done for the genre but really disliked the album, could not get into it.

(4/10) initial review Sound is extremely raw, intentionally disorganized and abrasive. Almost as if Kurt want the album to be hard to listen to for the audience. Lyrics are interesting. Seems like most songs are both inward admittance of flaw and and outward damnation of something/someone else. Would be very interested to dive into if this “damned” entity is consistent over the full album or a mixture of specific(his wife, record label, family) or vague (general human nature, institutions) entities. Overall the lyricism is fascinating, even more so because of death soon after release, but the sound of the album is unpleasant. Struggle to think of a mindset that this would be enjoyable in, would not be a common album to return to. All Apologies was a great ending to the album, leads me to believe that the abrasive nature of the album was done in spite of or as an attack on another entity and Kobain is apologizing to the listener for being a casualty of it.

If you didn’t know it was Nirvana, would you really love this? I mean, I like the overall vibe and soundscape but nothing sticks out as melodically interesting.

Serve the servants was somewhat listenable. Scentless Apprentice was just senseless noise. Heart-Shaped Box could be enjoyed, wouldn’t skip if it came on the radio. Rape Me’s intro was enjoyable, the rest of the song is pretty meh. FFWHHROS was again somewhat enjoyable, I liked the instrumental side of the song, remind me of GH3. Dumb is one of the better songs on the album, Kurt’s clean vocals were much more enjoyable here, and the overall song was decent. Very Ape was enjoyable, it wasn’t overly “ugh” and dull, it was fairly frantic and was quite punk which was fun. Milk It is another song that was just noise, it was a mix of Kurt just screaming and clean, dreary vocals. Pennyroyal Tea was listenable and somewhat enjoyable, probably wouldn’t skip it if it came on the radio. RFUS was actually just noise, didn’t enjoy at all. Tourette’s again was unlistenable. All Apologies was another song that I probably wouldn’t skip, it was calmer, which was a good ending to the album. Overall, Kurt Cobain’s vocals stop me from enjoying this album, it had some high moments but were overpowered by the lows. 2/5

Not really jamming with any of it. The best songs were All Apologies and Heart-Shaped Box, which to my mind were the most unique. The others just weren’t for me.
I don't think I had listened to all of In Utero before. I have listened to at least 2 other Nirvana albums before, and I know 5 of the 12 tracks from this album. From the beginning, I've felt at best ambivalant towards Nirvana. "Dumb" and "All Apologies" are interesting, and have kind of wormed there way in to where I like those tracks. But there are tracks on the album that I do not like. Sometimes it's the screaming and noise of the tracks, other times it's the content of the lyrics. The video for "Heart-Shaped Box" just makes me feel gross. As an album, I did not like In Utero.

Very grungy, high distortion guitar and vocals. Scentless Apprentice being one of the most egregious offenders, being particularly warped near the end. The song 'Rape Me' was particularly uncomfortable and I didn't feel as though it was sonically unique or profound enough to illicit such gross lyrics. I liked 'All Apologies' though.

Surprising, but I don't have much to say about this record. Steve Albini's production is big, Kurt Cobain wears his heart on his sleeve and the sound went on to inspire countless copycats. But almost nothing on this record stood out to me, which was a strange experience, as I was expecting a lot more from a recorded that was lauded by many of my music friends in university. I've been a Nirvana skeptic for as long as I've known them. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to approach their music with an open mind and try to take it on its on merits. And I did try. Unfortunately, this record did almost nothing for me. Sure, the band sounds *huge* in a way that became inescapable for most alt-rock bands to follow. And Kurt may have the soul of a poet, but the musical translation of his painful disaffection is a dreary slog that I find almost impossible to appreciate or relate to. These songs seem to mostly bleed and blend together to my ear. Maybe it's a generational issue. Then again, there's tons of other 90s bands I love. For now, I remain unmoved. But maybe the additional Nirvana records on this list will make a deeper impression. It has always been a strange one for me regarding Nirvana. I do like a few tracks but generally, I'm not the biggest fan. It's a similar story with this album. 'Heart-Shaped Box' is a tune that I have liked for a while but it doesn't blow my socks off. The controversial 4th track 'Rape Me' actually has a good instrumental to it but I find myself struggling to enjoy it for obvious reasons. I've seen that it is supposed to be an anthem that defies rape from the point of view of the victim; however, as much as this song seems to have good intentions, I could imagine it being an extremely difficult listen for an actual victim regardless of the context, especially with the pretty barbaric ending. Anyway, for a few notable tracks such as 'Heart-Shaped Box', I'll give this one a 2/5 overall.
I hoped I might like like this as I didn't mind the Nirvana Unplugged album and 'In Utero' is often compared to 'The Holy Bible'. However, it is nothing like either of those and is back to Nirvana's usual humourless, tuneless dirge.
By the time grunge hit the scene, I had been listening to metal, punk & post-punk for nearly two decades, so I dismissed it as a louder, raunchier version. Of course, some of the anthems cranked out by Nirvana caught my attention, but their riffs and choruses get recycled a lot on this later album. I like some of this album’s more melodic tracks like “Heart Shaped Box”, but I find the overall sound too limited and familiar.

Not a fan of grunge this album was one of my least favorite, but I thought it would be a little more exciting to listen to since I heard such great things, but it was confirmation that I really do not like grunge.
I had Nirvana's live album already, and that was a total banger. This was....not. I much prefer their more polished songs than this noise. First half of the album is ok, except for Scentless Apprentice which is horrid and Rape Me which is decent. Then it just devolves into junk. The ending comes a little back up with the mediocre All Apologies. Can't wait until I get Nevermind. Best song: Rape Me

Na een 5 sterren album mogen we wat verwachten. Maar blijkbaar moest de band zich even afzetten tegen het eerdere 'commerciële' geluid. Dat heet een punk-album. Ze laten ons tussendoor en vooral aan het eind horen, dat ze nog best wel goede muziek konden maken. Maar bepaalde teksten verraden toch de wens om zich af te zetten... Het laatste nummer zou wellicht een extra ster waard zijn, maar daar tegenover staat het verspilde talent. In de tijd van cd's voel je je toch echt bekocht als je deze schijf in huis haalde op basis van ervaringen uit het verleden.
I found the experience rather unpleasant, and it’s poetic that there’s a song titled Rape Me as that’s exactly what I felt this album did to my ears, at times. It’s really hard to take an album with such a song seriously, and I found very little in any other component of the music that could redeem that, nor could I discern any deeper meaning. Perhaps if I spent time reading the lyrics and background, sure, but that’s not exactly how music is supposed to be communicated and experienced, is it? I wouldn’t say it was bad, or completely unenjoyable, just very close. I wanted to enjoy it, truly, I went in very keen and even optimistic, but it was beaten out of me one track at a time. A few lyrics were good, like “I tried hard to have a father but instead I got a dad” in the opening track, but those few moments were lost in the sea of largely nonsensical screaming. I just plainly couldn’t understand what I was being subjected to and I fear its magic may have been a “you had to be there” moment, lost to time.
Never again, nearly gave me headache.
Please for the love of God don't make me listen to milk it ever again. 1/5 stars
The lows on this album are SO LOW. Trash. There's a stretch between Heart-Shaped Box and Dumb that's decent, and then All Apologies is good. Nirvana are overrated.

I guess heart-shaped box is pretty good, but if it's the hit meant to redeem this album, it's woefully insufficient (All Apologies is also good, but better when covered by others). But in "rape me" (a dubious song to begin with) they quote the "smells like teen spirit" riff--which they already stole from Pixies U-Mass! Makes me wonder if Nirvana really just put everything they had into Nevermind, with no ideas left for the rest of the work
Grunge was a particular time in the American music scene. It should stay that way.
There are those who criticised some of the albums on here for being too polished. Well that isn't the case here. I base this opinion on the fact that you can't polish a turd. For that it what this album definitely is. With the one exception of Heart Shaped Box, this album is the biggest load of crap I have listened to in a really long time. Compered to yesterday's offering, well it's a case of from the sublime to the ridiculous. Can only be a 1, because there is no zero. Apparently this was a statement against producing music purely for commercial purposes. Fair play you're allowed to do that. But if you're not bothering to play the instruments to your talents, and you are just screaming at the microphone instead of using your sining ability I'm still going to say it's a steaming great turd.
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I simply do not connect with Nirvana. It sounds amateur with production, you can't understand a single lyric due to the mix and Cobain's complete lack of enunciation and the guitar sounds like a tin can full of wasps and doesn't work to be in a way that works for me. I think Cobain was an okay to good writer but never found the way he delivered them to resonante with me, I tried to listen to the entirety of this album but just couldn't.

This is the second Nirvana album I've encountered on this list and I'm beginning to think that I just do not like Nirvana. I don't like Kurt Cobain's voice, which sounds like it has three modes: bored, growling, or straight up screaming. They are all grating and annoying. The guitars and drums are noisy and unpleasant. It's loud for the sake of being loud. I'm not a fan of abrasive, brash music, and it's looking like I'm not a fan of grunge as a genre either.
Thought this was going to be my type of thing, but shit was I wrong Nirvana are for sure overhyped. This was terrible with maybe 2 good songs sprinkled in 1 ⭐️

Maybe you have to be a teenager to like this. I found the whole album, outside of all apologies, which is a good song, to be a depressing slog. For the most part Kurt just seems to want us to know that he’s having a really bad time, not enjoying himself at all. Point taken.
