This album rates pretty high for me because it was one of the first ones I got on CD. That first side is just so strong, back to back to back killer tracks, although "Wild Honey Pie" is a bit of a filler. The second side has "Don't Pass Me By," which isn't bad for a first track by Ringo. Little heavy on the keys, making it feel very calliope-like. The third side doesn't have a real clunker, although Sexy Sadie is probably the one I like least of those, but it's still real good. Then there's side four. First off, I like the single version of "Revolution" that was released. I think it's much better than Revolution 1. I wish they had included it as a bonus on the remaster or something. Then there's "Revolution 9." Look, I get that they were experimenting with all different styles throughout the album. Sgt. Pepper is strictly an album of its time, but it opened up everyone to the possibility of doing more than just "rock and roll." The White Album is more malleable, much looser in form because of the experimentation. Having said that, "Revolution 9" is just... boring. Boring and too long. So I usually skip it. "Good Night" closes ou tthe album, and it's a bit too mich treacle. SO since I've skipped "Revolution 9" I usually skip that too. So there you have it. I've played this album so many times since it was one of my first CDs. But even so, there are still a few tracks I tend to skip, so as much as I have a fondness for it, I can only give 4 out of 5 because of those weak tracks.

There are definitely some lowlights on this album; how could you not have any with 30 songs? But give credit to the sheer vastness of the production - a double album with many good songs. Is it great? TBD. I call BS on those who criticized the lyrics for being too simple. There are a lot of double meanings and songs that you only truly understand if you think through it a lot. Side One is pretty solid though I've never really liked Ob La Di Ob La Da and the next two tracks dip (though I love the underlying meaning of lyrics in Bungalow Bill). Back in the USSR is still fun and Dear Prudence is beautiful. While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Happiness is a Warm Gun are songs that show the musicianship the Beatles lacked when they were younger. Side Two is a bit more of the same - so good to start, including I'm So Tired and Blackbird. And then it gets a little weird with Piggies through to Why Don't We Do it In the Road, though the first has some thought-provoking lyrics and when you know the back story behind the others they're more interesting. But the last two tracks pick it up again with two sweet pieces by Paul and John in I Will and Julia. Side Three is probably my favorite for its energy. Birthday is a joke but kudos to it being mostly improvised. And it is fun! Yer Blues is a solid blues attempt. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey is a hidden gem for rock lovers or lovers of early Beatles. Helter Skelter, like Yer Blues, shows the Beatles virtuosity in being able to do something heavy, pretty damn well. If they ended after Side Three I'd say it's 5-star. Side Four makes things iffy. Revolution is a great song with the musical arrangement on the eventual single, not with the one on this album (still good because it's lyrics are awesome). Honey Pie and Savoy Truffle grow on you but both are a bit juvenile. Cry Baby Cry is pretty good, but not as good as stuff on the other sides. Revolution 9 is terrible. Good Night sounds like the end to some cute kids movie; it's actually kind of endearing. Maybe I'm overweighting Side Four or some of the other so-so tracks but after an internal struggle I landed on 4-star.

If I had to pick one word to describe The White Album, it would be UNEVEN. The White Album has some of the Beatles' best songs, a bunch of ok but generally uninspiring (and often derivative) songs, and then some songs they should have left on the cutting room floor (e.g., Wild Honey Pie, Piggies, and Revolution 9). Basically, if they were to take the best songs and a few of the ok songs they'd have a great single album. Maybe the Beatles were over-convinced of their greatness, but someone needed to tell them NO on making it a double album (sounds like George Martin tried unsuccessfully). If I were to pick which songs to turn into an amazing single album, this would be the track listing. I added Hey Jude and the single version of Revolution because they were recorded in the same sessions but only released as singles. I kept the order they used, except for adding Hey Jude. I'd probably find a different spot for Julia because it's just too mellow to have Blackbird followed by Julia. Similarly, Helter Skelter is a little stark following Mother Nature's Son: Back in the USSR Dear Prudence Glass Onion Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da (apparently a lot of people hate this, but I like it). While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Amazing song - of course, everyone should hear Prince's solo in the 2004 Rock Hall Tribute to George Harrison) Blackbird Julia (this is one of the ok ones I pulled in to fill up the single album) Birthday Mother Nature's Son (another ok one to fill the album) Helter Skelter Revolution (single version, but Revolution 1 is still good) Hey Jude (not on the album, but recorded during these sessions) Goodnight (always holds a special place for me because my son used to fall asleep listening to Jason Falkner's Bedtime with the Beatles and his version of Goodnight is magical). Total run time = slightly under 46 minutes. One great album, boys.

I've listened to this album 10 000 times and I still can't remember anything about Long, Long, Long.

This is my favorite album from one of my favorite bands. Everything you could want from the Beatles can be found there: pop songs, deeper folk ballads, psychedelic moments, their heaviest piece, experimental material, etc. I could listen to it anytime!

Another 5/5 stars album by the Beatles, I think this one might be my second or third favorite from them, i don’t really care for some of the tracks but none of them are bad, maybe Obladi lol… I really like this album, even Revolution 9 although I do remember it use to scare me when I was a child. When I saw it on the draw I went and unpacked my moon version from 2014, my god it is an excellent recording. Love it.

Probably my least listened to Fabs L.P. An extraordinary record by any standard, there is a problem with Beatles fatigue and parts of it (Revolution 9) are unlistenable.

A wonderful Beatles album with a variety of songs. This album is long but being a fan of the Beatles it’s only appreciated. This album has a little bit of everything that made their other albums great. Obviously that means this one isn’t too cohesive or flowing but it doesn’t necessarily matter if you just want to hear more Beatles. Excellent album. 8.4/10

I've heard this one recently, so I will skip listening to it this time around. I feel like it's one of their least talked about records, despite it being so heavily praised. There's some great songs on here, but it's not all good. There's almost too much material here, so unless you already like The Beatles this won't do much for you. Easily a top 5 Beatles album for me, though.

I always eagerly look forward to this album and finish it disappointed. Some songs are among my favourites (including Blackbird, Martha, Glass Onion, Dear Prudence, while my guitar), others are quite poor. George Martin was right: should have been an amazing 2-sided LP, but we know selecting songs would have broken up The Beatles way before Let it be and Abbey Road. Pick and choose your favourites into a playlist and avoid the mishmash of great, awful, good, weak.

Some great songs, most of which you've already heard a thousand times. Some filler, some stuff that doesn't work. All in all it's decent. Could have been a killer single album.

Not uniformly great but if you don't miss sometimes you aren't shooting high enough, right? Overall this album is an astonishing achievement. But you already know that.

Always an amazing album to listen to

A few songs here almost merit giving 5 stars on their own. Then some skip worthy filler. Classic gets 4.5 and rounding up.

It's tough because this is no Abbey Road, but one band having a monumental album shouldn't negatively impact their not-best-album-that-is-still-miles-above-most-music. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is the best Beatles song and lots of other great stuff here too.

Some undeniable classics on here obviously, but there’s also some incredibly weird tracks (what the hell is Revolution 9?). I appreciate The White Album and it’s place in the top whatever albums, and it has some of my favourite Beatles songs, but are the 31 songs each a great listen, would I be listening to it in full regularly? No, probably not.

The Beatles on 'The Beatles' seem to be doing what beetles do best, often working alone, solitary, and independent of the others. You can almost feel them starting to distance themselves from one another. But all species evolve, and in their case they would adapt and move on, successfully. Think of some of this as the molting phase- ‘Glass Onion,’ ‘Helter Skelter,’ and ‘Long, Long, Long’ seem like flashbacks of the LSD influenced, 'The Magical Mystery Tour.' There’s also a splash of early Beatles’ here and there with ‘Back in the U.S.S.R.’ and ‘Birthday.’ But then there’s an awful lot of solo material from both Lennon and McCartney, almost as if they’re feeling their respective ways to wherever the next place is. Between Ringo’s obligatory good-natured but corny tune, ‘Don’t Pass My By,’ and just plain weird shit like ‘Revolution 9,’ 'The Beatles' tends to wander. But its still the Beatles, so its still great. At least the great parts are great. Out of the thirty songs, Lennon scored the best with eleven good ones, McCartney in second place with seven, and Harrison a solid four. However, if you consider Harrison’s average, four of four a winner, that’s batting a thousand my friends, just edging out Lennon, by contrast, with twelve out of thirteen. McCartney, unfortunately, had the same number of songs as Lennon, but five of those stunk (as well as a couple of their shared ones), giving him not much better than a 50% average. Mind you, this is purely my judgement, and adversely affected by offerings like ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’ and ‘Honey Pie,’ McCartney numbers that Lennon referred to derisively as ‘granny music.’ So, my scores are admittedly subjective. But I’m going with that, and if you like to come along and wander with me just a bit farther down this path, I’d like to propose my own alternate LP track list, and on just one record, as opposed to the double album set on which we all grew up. Leaving the order untampered with, 'The Beatles': Side One: 1) Back in the U.S.S.R. 2) Dear Prudence 3) Glass Onion 4) While My Guitar Gently Weeps 5) Happiness Is a Warm Gun 6) Martha My Dear 7) I’m So Tired 8) Blackbird 9) Piggies 10) Rocky Raccoon 11) I Will Total Length: 28.41 Side Two: 1) Julia 2) Birthday 3) Yer Blues 4) Mother Nature’s Son 5) Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey 6) Sexy Sadie 7) Long, Long Time 8) Revolution 1 9) Savoy Truffle 10) Cry Baby Cry 11) Good Night Total Length: 32.80 And the songs we left off? Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Wild Honey Pie, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill (my only Lennon reject), Don’t Pass Me By, Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?, Helter Skelter, Honey Pie, and Revolution 9. If it were in the name of making a tighter single record LP, are there any amongst these eight that you just couldn’t live without? Finally (drum roll), awards for the best four songs, one on each side, and side one’s pick should be no surprise: George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps,’ with honorable mention for McCartney’s always unique melodic bass lines, at times playing entire chords and offering counter melodies and such. Side two goes to Sir Paul himself with ‘Rocky Raccoon.’ I remember this playing on the radio practically every time we climbed in my Dad’s big ol’ Pontiac Bonneville for a Sunday afternoon ride to Baskin r’ Robbins. Side three: the Lennon rocker, ‘Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey. Great guitars accompanying Lennon’s biting sarcasm and surreal lyrics. And my pick for side four: Another Harrison work, ‘Savoy Truffle.’ This sounds like something right off 'Revolver.' And special thanks to producer Chris Thomas for his terrific horn arrangement on this and others. I don’t know what this means exactly, but two of the best belonged to George, and along with Lennon’s one, most sound like the complete Beatles playing as a unit. Rocky Raccoon was pretty much all Paul. A shadow of things to come?

I don't know if additional listenings to this album added anything musically to what I already thought and heard with previous listenings. A great album and one of their best in my mind. I did, however, learn a lot about its history and the state of The Beatles at the time. 19 of the 30 songs were written and initially acoustically recorded in India during their Transcendental Meditation. Although lots of different musical styles/genres between songs, there were no style changes within a song (a change). There were lots of signals that this might be the beginning of the end for The Beatles as a group; George Martin left during the recordings. Ringo also left for two weeks. Yoko presence during the recording seemed to annoy everyone. And, in only 16 of the 30 songs were all four band members performing. Regardless, none of this appears to have affected the quality. The songs on this album cover many styles: Rock, Blues, Country, Reggae and Experimental. I'd have to write a book (and there is a lot written commentary already) on each song. For the album as a whole, I'm not sure it's necessary or imperative to listen to everything at once or even in its album order. I really don't find a connection between songs. Maybe, there is one. Lots of song highlights, some of mine: "Happiness is a Warm Gun" - Lennon's vocals and overall band performance, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - maybe my favorite Beatles' song, "Helter Skelter" - McCartney vocals and finding out Helter Skelter is British slang for a playground slide and "Good Night" - maybe Lennon's best singing and a lullaby for Julian. Some may say some of these songs are fillers but hard to argue with their final decision to keep everything the way they did.

So much richness in one [double] album! There's literally every genre of contemporary western (and a bit of non western) music in the mix here, as well as stuff from each individual Beatle. And, for one reason or another, it is all packaged in what I consider a very cohesive album. So much so that even the much maligned Revolution 9 feels like a logical conclusion. For these reasons, while I don't consider The White Album to be the Beatles' best (there's very tough competition there), it does happen to be the Beatles album I listen to the most.

High points are obviously very high, there's no real consistency to the album though and some of it is very forgettable.

From 1001 recommended albums this is the one that started the next thousands to come also not recommended in this list. The weird thing is that you need to listen to many of these recommended albums to realise it and appreciate this one

Rich and varied, weird and wonderful, one can make a case that this is not just the best Beatles album, but the best two. Good records make it hard to pick the best 2 or 3 songs, great records the best 4-5; for this one, the top 8 or 10 are debatable. So many underappreciated gems – both from Lennon (“Happiness Is a Warm Gun,” “I’m So Tired” “Julia,” “Sexy Sadie,” “Me & My Monkey) and McCartney (“Mother Nature’s Son” and “Helter Skelter” [one wishes we’d heard from extreme Paul down the years.]) Plus solid contributions from Ringo and George. The contrasting cuts between tracks makes for compelling texture – from “Piggies” to “Rocky Raccoon” to “Don’t Pass Me By;” from “Bungalow Bill” to “While My Guitar;” from “Do It in the Road” to “I Will” are all attention-grabbing segues. Yes, “Revolution No 9” might have been a few minutes shorter and binning “Ob-La-Di” would be addition by subtraction, but it’s the excess that makes the overall record so excellent and endearing. I can’t get enough of this record, which is saying something, considering how much of it there is. So good that “Hey Jude” failed to make the cut. 4.8/5

I mean, what is there to say except it's The Beatles' White Album. While My Guitar Gently Weeps has been among my most loved songs since the first time I heard it as a child. It still provokes emotion now, it's so beautiful. I didn't give this the full 5 because being forced to sing Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da in infant school has left scars. Not so much the singing but listening to 30 other seven year olds reguarly ruin it leaves lasting marks on a person.

I think this is my favorite Beatles album. There's just so much good content on it. John's voice sometimes gets on my nerves. I love Dear Prudence but John's voice really irritates me on that one; the Beatles discography would be improved if John was only allowed to sing one or two songs on each album. I don't see how people can hate the Beatles. The Beatles aren't even in my top 30 favorite bands but they're so quality. They've got a good balance of accessible and weird.

An exceptional album. Really displays how talented the group is. This one is in my top 3 for Beatles ablums.

I've not listened to the White Album in full for a long time. I know some people think that there are too many "novelty" songs post Sgt Pepper. But this feels like the Beatles issuing a challenge. "Give us a style and a subject and we'll write a song about it and not just any song but a fucking good one, go on we dare you. We're that good."

Wowee. I’d never sat and listened to the whole thing but this is something else. What a progressive, post modern, avant garden piece of work. The sounds of the future… what a masterpiece.

One of the greatest of all time

Yeah it was good. Liked the production. T’was odd. Rocked hard in 68’. I’m really tired. The album was good. I’ve got blisters on my fingers.

Not my favorite but there’s an intimacy and a confidence that are really nice. Feels like this is making music especially for themselves, what they had inside wanting out. And it took until this listen to realize I’ve been playing Blackbird wrong.

Plenty of songs, loads of variety. Some real oddities but enough very good songs. Overall rather sprawling but it is a double album so offers room for experimentation.

I can respect being eclectic but holy shit dude. Almost every song on this album was good in its own right but had no continuity from one to the other. Also what the fuck was revolution 9. Back in the ussr and obladi = classics. Also liked the blues songs

It undeniably has some beautiful songs on it, but it also has some jangly irritating tracks. The 90 minute runtime just isn't justified, this could be cut down to an excellent 40 minute album just by taking out the actually good songs

Some of the greatest songs ever written but this album has too much “stuff” on it. I think it’s a little overrated and needed to be trimmed down. Still love it.

Such a great and diverse album

A very patchy album with the second disk marginally better than the first. Some great tracks and some absolute dross. A strong argument against double albums in principle.

A smorgasbord of styles all with an unistakable Beatles feel, which is weird but I liked it. A concept album without a central concept, which appears to be the concept, unless it isn't. I even like the 'lesser' tracks which build the landscape. An album of 'We do this, which is showing off, and you can listen if you want' An album to Muso over.

This album is mostly great but the greatness is combined with some annoying experimental songs that left out would make this a solid five star experience. Now it is a mediocre four.

People might say this album is a bit of a creative mess, but most of the songs on here are better than almost all of the songs on any other artists' albums. This is the Beatles, plain and simple. The best, the catchiest, and the most interesting to listen to.

1. John, Paul, George and Ringo really put their whole Beatussy into this album. The combination of sex, drugs and rock and roll was at its apex. 2. So many of the songs on this album have been covered. And so many of those covers are actually better than the original. However, the Beatles' originals still hold up, especially when listening to the album as a whole. But you cannot tell me that the Breeders version of "Happiness is a Warm Gun" is not vastly superior to the original. 3. I owned this album on vinyl in the 90s. It wasn't even a good pressing and I never got much enjoyment out of listening to it, so I mostly associate it with listening on my crappy record player and all the associated garbage of the mid 90s. 4. How many albums can be a product of their era and also sound like something from 20 years later and also sound kind of modern but in a throwback way? 5. When I was 11, a deeply Christian girl in my class told us about a Satanic song where a man just said "number nine, number nine" over and over and if you played it backwards there was a Satanic message and a boy she knew listened to it and he started acting strangely. Years later I realised it was just the Beatles sound collage. I listened to it and started acting normal.

It was decent, I just felt disappointed.

The Beatles' White Album is an oft-discussed contender for greatest double album of all time, and has a runtime of roughly the same length as a feature film. This will test my patience. White Album has a strong first half, that much is for certain. Back in the USSR kicks things off with great energy, Dear Prudence is one of the best songs ever done by The Beatles, I actually enjoy Ob-La-Di for it's simple fun, the list goes on. Though there are weak spots along the way (looking at you, Wild Honey Pie), the eccentricity gives the album a sort of carefree fun quality. This serves a stark contrast from the album cover, which is nothing. Somewhere after Blackbird, I feel as though we've lost the plot. Sure, they're well-made songs, but they're songs that sort of just wash over me. One of the pitfalls of making so many great songs is that the good songs sound just okay. This is also a pitfall of double albums, in that it becomes difficult to maintain consistent quality the longer the tracklist gets. Sure, there are plenty of great songs to talk about on White Album, but there are an equal amount of songs that get lost in the mix. Piggies, I Will, Mother Nature's Son, and many others are perfectly fine songs that lose momentum due to the other tracks that are miles better. White Album is a lesson in Beatles songwriting. It showcases how they are both good musicians and fantastic songwriters. I mean, gosh, Helter Skelter did heavy metal a full year before Black Sabbath. And props to Revolution 9 for scaring the folks at home

The so-called White Album was an example of the change of mood in rock music towards a simpler and more traditional way of making music. I love this album. Complete ego trip of some of the greatest rock song writers. The richness and self mythologising and stupid pastiche songs and some of the best rock pieces ever written. while my guitar gently weeps morphing into happiness is a warm gun is some of the coolest sounding things from the 60s.

Time for my hottest take yet. I've listened to this entire album like 4 times now and every time it's the same thing: I start really enjoying it but by the time the second disc starts I'm so insanely over it. The best songs (Back in the USSR, Glass Onion, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird) are all around the beginning of the first disc and the rest just feels like bland filler. Come on, I know that nobody reading this has "Cry Baby Cry" in their "Favorites" playlist on Spotify. Revolution 9 is unironically one of my favorite disc 2 songs because at least it makes me feel something (existential dread), but still something. I like the Beatles but I genuinely believe that this is one of their worst records.

10/5. Oh, that's not possible? Then 5/5. I can't pick a favorite Beatles record, but this one is tied for first with a handful of others. I probably know this record better than any other Beatles record. It represents the band wringing the sponge of every drop of music they could muster, at the tail end of their harmonious/collaborative times. The songs are so varied. Every song on this record could have spawned an entire generation of bands that try to emulate that one 3-4 minute moment in the Beatles catalog. Eric Clapton's finest moment (by 10 miles) is on this record. I thought about listing my favorite songs, but the list basically just became the full record. People say this could have been a single album. They just haven't listened to it enough.

I might get some hate for this, but I'm not a huge fan of this album. Let me explain. Obviously, the Beatles are great - and there are enough great songs on this album (some that got plenty of radio play and other lesser-knowns) to warrant a 5-star rating. But - there are a lot of duds on this album too. It sounds like the Beatles were just like, "let's record everything and throw it on there because we're the fucking Beatles and people will go ape-shit no matter what we do." Which, to be fair, is true - but it seems like there was a little lack of quality control. Part of this is likely contextual. Were they really "the Beatles" on this album - or just a bunch of guys recording their own shit and trying to get it included in the final product? There's Paul's songs, and John's songs, and George's songs - shit, even Ringo's songs - but only a handful of "Beatles" songs. Plus - what's with all the animal references? Piggies, and birds, and monkeys, and racoons. I feel like - more than any of their other albums - this one is full of songs where the story behind the song is probably more interesting than the actual song in a lot of cases. There's something to be said for that I suppose. It's a must-hear if you're interested in Beatles history, but if you just came for the music - it's a bit of a roller coaster.

To say that White Album is experimental is like saying that grass is green and sky is blue. It's quite a mixed bag, it has some of The Beatles' best work and some of their least memorable. Regardless of inconsistency it's still an amazing achievement in their discography. Some bands can only dream to achieve the heights of this album but the Beatles have had even better ones. Truly one of the best bands of all time.

In an album of stunning rock monuments and some of the most iconic pop culture statements, you get the colossal stinker Why Don't We Do It In The Road. Wild Honey Pie is in the same vein. The thing about this album is that the Beatles still had expiraments they wanted to do. It doesn't sound like a band ready to explode and splinter. Helter Skelter kicks so much ass. Revolution 1! Goddamn the final act of a cultural juggernaut.

An excellent record. Unfortunately it's plagued by some mediocre songs, but more than 2/3rds of this record is full of masterpieces. So close to being a front-to-backer for me. Overall excellent album.

It's notable that a ninety-minute album can feel so purposely incomplete. The band is technically brilliant, but seem to be combining these songs toward an entirely different end than Sgt. Pepper's. The lynchpin of my reading is While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and my affection for that song is due in no small part to nostalgia. The first disc is killer; With the second, it seems a step down from the band's output. Still great to my ears, though this album seems extremely vulnerable to one's overall opinion of the Beatles.

I like The Beatles... but I think this album is a little too long. The singles are good though and I appreciate how many different things they tried. Favorite: Blackbird

My favourite Beatles album is "The Best of the Beatles" (from the ages of 7-11 it actually was because it was the only one we had on tape). I was excited for "The White Album," and the crescendo of "Back in the USSR" followed by the melancholy crush of "Dear Prudence" (my favourite Beatles song) is a hell of a way to open an album and set its tone. But there are some duff tracks here too: "Ob-La-Di" and "Piggies" have dated awfully, and I'm sad to say I found the whole thing more irritating than enjoyable.

Way better than I was expecting other than Wild Honey Pie, everything else was mostly enjoyable. I really like Rocky Raccoon, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, and recognized Glass Onion from an MF DOOM sample.

Soft spot

My esteem with The Beatles only grows over time. I am not sure if they are truly, objectively the *best* band of the 60s. I know for a fact they weren't the *first* band to make the choices they did or have the sound they did. However, when you listen to the White Album you cannot help but go, "oh, literally every band for the last 60 years has been trying to emulate this sound".

it's a 4 I suppose. I'm not trying to be edgy by not giving it a 5, it's just ok to me. It starts off super strong and then gets a bit forgettable. And personally I've always found that Number 9 track extremely annoying.

First Beatles album was amazing way to end Fall 2021 semester!! Time to start Spring 2022 Semester Music!!

I think there are two kinds of people: those whose families listened to the Beatles and those who didn't. I'm in the 2nd category so even though I remember reading a John Lennon bio in high school and covered Back in the USSR, I never listened to the Beatles that much. I certainly didn't get the dance hall flourishes that they use on some of their songs. I knew a lot of the songs on this album because of covers so it was nice to listen to the whole album. It is especially interesting as a document about their trip to India.

Any time I listen to the Beatles I'm never not astounded that they existed for such a short period, pulled songs out of the ether as it was nothing, released them on records year-after-year, and we're still talking about them more than 50 years after they split up. And that McCartney was still in his 20s when they split. This should probably lose points for 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' and 'Why Don't We Do It In the Road'. It's a far easier job to name the worst Beatles songs than the best songs. Worth listening to the extended version for the 'Esher Demos'

A sprawling, messy album that highlights a pop sensibility backed with vaudeville and experimentalism, as well as some kick-ass guitar. Holds up a lot better than I'd remembered, especially on headphones.

Know this album from my youth, have always been a huge Beatles fan. Definitely one of the top 3 albums by this band.

Revolution 9 😍😍😍

Funnily enough, this was the first Beatles record I listened to end-to-end. Doing so again now, it clearly has some amazing tracks like Dear Prudence, Back in the USSR, Revolution 1. But it can also feel pretty indulgent and off the rails despite the amazing production.

'The White Album' from the Beatles - as it's mostly referred to as - is the ninth album from the band and their only double album. It's technically a rock or pop album, but has songs originating from other genres including: folk, blues, reggae, and avant-garde. As a result of 30 songs and different types of music, individual listeners may like certain songs and not others from the album. However this album will in fact have something for every listener, so it's fun to find out which songs you like. The album was a critical and commercial success, going 24x platinum which technically makes it twice diamond certified! You can tell the band had fun putting this album together because it shows in the music, but behind the scenes the band was slowly imploding...

Fitting that this comes up shortly after the release of Peter Jackson's Get Back documentary. Apparently the sessions for the White Album were the start of the fractures that led to the Beatles break up. Lennon even said "the break-up of the Beatles can be heard on that album". I guess it's a double-album in part because it's basically several solo albums jammed together and only 16 of the 30 tracks have all four members contributing. This definitely contributes to the album, it's all over the map musically. I find most double-albums to be a bit boring at some point but I think this avoids it mostly because it's so diverse. Some great stuff on here for sure but it's never really been my favorite Beatles record. This also becomes the point where Paul's contributions start to get a bit too saccharine. Also, small rant. I hate when people credit the Beatles for "inventing" all sorts of genres on this record. For instance people say they invented heavy metal and/or punk rock on Helter Skelter. I like the Beatles but this is a crazy statement. Both of these things are true: They are a great band and the most overrated band in history.

An absolute stone-cold classic. An album you can listen to on repeat forever and never get sick of.

Loses a star for being far too long and loses a star for the absolutely horrific ob-la-di, ob-la-da. It was clearly ahead of its time but if I never listen to it again I won't be disappointed.

Not my favorite Beatles album. Very all over the place musically which is both its strength and weakness. The highs are very high the lows...well even the lows are pretty good. I want to give it 5 stars because it's very enjoyable, but it just isn't a 5 star album.

First ever listen to that album! It’s a doozy. I see why folks put it in the list of best ever. Epic, and such a variety of sounds. Never been much of a Beatles fan—but respect where respect is due.

Grew up with this album so no chore here. Wildly uneven, starts with a piss take, ends with a piss take. Not sure even the Beatles wanted us to take this album seriously. Lots to enjoy, lots of fast forward.

Not a huge Beatles fan- my dad drowned me with them while growing up. That said, this album is spectacular and really enjoyed it for a double album.

Well, duh. This is the best record by The Beatles. Sgt. Peppers and Abbey Road come in a close 2nd/3rd though. That being said, the White Album is amazing. So many incredible tracks and a complete effort by all four members. Revolution 9 still confuses me, but hey - Yoko and experimental this or that. Whatever. It doesn't matter. Best Beatles album hands down, and possibly #1 album on this list. 6 stars!

This is an amazing album and it was made at a time the band was incredibly dysfunctional. There are a number of gems and imo this album contains John's best songwriting.  While John’s songs are the highlight, Paul also has a couple of good songs. To be sure, he also has a lot of hot dog songs. Paul is still Paul.  Side 1 The album kicks off with a bang w Paul’s Back in the USSR.  I recall pointing out previously (I think in comparing John's and Paul's parts of A Day in The Life) that John's writing, being so much more creative,  attracts / allows his bandmates to be creative.  Dear Prudence is another example of this as Ringo lays down some killer drumming. (Same comment on Ringo's drumming applies to I’m so Tired)  It's unfortunate that Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da  made it on this album. Paul sure does write some weenie stuff. I would have preferred they left this one off and made Revolution 9 three minutes longer lol  While my Guitar . . is my favourite Harrisong. Clapton's guitar playing is top shelf. Happiness is a Warm Gun is the best song on the album. It's a beast and a strong finish to Side 1.   Side 2 Side 2 starts with another of Paul's weenie songs but wakes up with I'm So Tired.  The song makes me feel sleep deprived and I can hear the colour grey when I listen to this track. Black Bird is a powerful anti-black racism song by Paul. This message was as appropriate as ever in 1968 but the message was so subtle I never got that it was anti-racism until someone told me years later. Was it just me? Part of me thinks that Paul was camouflaging  the message since the listeners who might not approve of the anti-racism message were probably the same folks who would buy songs like Uncle Albert after the inevitable split with John.  Bob Dylan, known for having cryptic lyrics,  was far less subtle with his anti-black racism message in the opening line of Blowing in the Wind. Paul was always more of an Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da type of guy.  George's Piggies is less subtle and his anti-establishment message is loud and clear.  OK some might label Rocky Raccoon fluff but I really like that song. Ringo's singing on his composition Don’t Pass Me By really is very good and entertaining. Our Canadian brother Jack Fallon lays down some excellent fiddle on this tune.  Why Don't we do it in the Road? OK, mom always said "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all". For one song I will bite my lip and take this advice.  I Will is a hot dog song but Paul’s voice on this ballad  is at it’s best. Julia is John's  beautiful ballad about how he misses his mom. I understand Paul made the decision on ordering the songs and purposely put John’s ballad Julia after I Will since the different tempo and relative singing makes John's voice sound comparatively bad. What a weiner.  Side 3 Yer Blues is one of the best rock and roll songs ever recorded. This song might, on its own, justify a 5 for this double LP.  If you have a chance, check out the live version of this song performed by The Dirty Mac. Great song by a great band but it’s the only song the band ever recorded.  Our loss. On Sexy Sadie Lennon displays his venom to the Maharishi in the way only John could. I read that the Maharishi was trying to get some of the American women between the sheets. I know it was the sexual revolution and all but one of the things about being in the enlightenment business is you can't bang the hot Americans who visit you. I read that when the  Maharishi asked why they were leaving, Lennon responded "Your the one who is suppose to be so fucking cosmic, why don't you tell us why we are leaving." John's song hits the point so well but, unfortunately, he was still in trouble for his “We’re more popular than Jesus” comment so decided not to stir the pot and changed the word "Maharishi" to "Sexy Sadie". Too bad for everyone named Sadie since they now have a vicious song written about them.  Helter Skelter is a good rocker by  Paul. The false endings are fun and the song eventually ends with the classic line "I got blisters on my fingers" I recall years ago reading that John screamed those ending words but later saw an interview where Ringo says the words were his. This makes more sense. You get calluses rather than blisters from playing guitar too much .   Side 4 Revolution is an excellent song. I like this acoustic version more than the hard rock version released as a single. Revolution 9 is still bizarre but much less bizarre today than it must have been in 1968. I recall Revolution 9 and Helter Skelter were Charles Manson's favourite songs. I wonder if Paul was more pissed that his song was associated with a mass murderer or that somebody liked his song and Revolution 9 the same amount. (He's such a TubeSteak.) The best thing I can say about Rev 9 is that it makes the following song such a welcome change. Good Night  is the lullaby I have sung to my children forever. When I play this LP, the needle always comes off the album around 8 minutes before Good Night starts. (DUH - I wonder why?) I completely forgot what album this song was on and haven't heard anyone other than me sing it for decades. It was so nice to hear Richard Starkey's  lovely version.

On earlier Beatles albums I used to have a hard time telling John & Paul apart, but here it was much easier - even though I always thought Helter Skelter was a John song. It seems like everybody is doing their own thing, but it makes for a lot of variety, which you need for a double album. Side 4 drags a bit but it was good to hear the original Revolution. It was a smart move to make a single of the more aggressive version. I like George Harrison’s contributions and even the Ringo stuff is OK especially the lullaby for John’s son that he sings to close it out. And of course the album will always have a great historical impact because of it's influence on Charlie Manson.

I've actually never listened to the entire album because so many of the tracks from it are widely available. I found a lot of filler, but also a lot of nice gems. Revolution 1 is a nice alt version. Revolution 9 is an interesting avant garde track that is sure to raise a few eyebrows. I had to check twice that Good Night was by them because its sounded so different, Wiki informs me that the vocals are by Ringo and he can actually sing! Long, long, long and Yer Blues are good. But despite the filler there's a lot of killer. The strength of this album is the fact that its all over the map but it still hangs together quite well.

Not a big beatles fan but I enjoyed most of this album

The prototypical messy, overindulgent, late career double album. I almost always appreciate them but sometimes it's more about the ambition and cohones then it is the final result but I mean, it's the Beatles, it's perfect. I'm pretty sure this was the first Beatles album I ever owned and I've listened to it hundreds of times probably. It holds up of course, it's fun, it's weird and there's nothing else I can say that hasn't already been said by smarter people and better writers.

One of my favorite albums of all time. I could spend all day talking about each of the tracks, but I'll just focus on the overarching nature of the songs. The key aspect is the diversity in genre and styles. The Beatles had just come back from their trip in Rishikesh with nearly their entire career under their belt. Each of the Beatles had creative freedom to do whatever they wanted in their songs, despite the constant bickering in the studio. Many are acoustic written during their Rishikesh trip others like "Glass Onion" follow from their psychedelic trend since Revolver, and others are like nothing else in their catalog (most notably the ska "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" and metal "Helter Skelter"). But despite these differences, the album flows seamlessly from track to track. It's incredibly smooth and there aren't any unintended rough cuts between contrasting songs. I've always been able to tell people exactly what the next song on the album was without having memorized the track listing... only by listening to the current song. "Back in the USSR" which the airline landing calming down the mood from the energetic opening to something exactly the opposite, serene and blissful. Or the sudden "ay oh" and chords from the folk "Bungalow Bill" to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Maybe it's because the first half of each song is so distinctive that you immediately know the sudden stylistic shift from track to track. A lot of these tracks don't belong on any other album except this one. They're a lot simpler, and often very weird, but distinctively Beatles. There aren't any bad tracks. Some cases could be made. "Honey Pie" is experimental and could be forgettable by its unmelodic nature, but that trippy sound is ingrained in my mind. "Why Don't We Do It In the Road" is catchy and fun and doesn't disrupt the flow or character of the album. I always interpreted it as McCartney making fun of Lennon's rough vocals, especially since it's followed by "I Will." Yoko's vocals in "Bungalow Bill" is a little annoying, but it grows on you, and I love McCartney's vocal and lyrical refrains. "Rocky Raccoon" is one of the first songs I really paid attention to lyrics, and I recall over a decade ago watching a fan-made claymation on Youtube. I read too much into "Don't Pass Me By" with the conspiracy theories. To me, the climax of the album felt like it started with "Helter Skelter" despite there still being a half hour left. My favorite transition is from the frightening "Helter Skelter" to the peaceful "Long Long Long" that feels like the quiet following a storm. I always preferred the album "Revolution" to the single, but that's probably because I would only hear the single on the radio, while I've listened to this album hundreds of times. "Savoy Truffle" has been a personal favorite of mine. Not that it's on of my favorite tracks on the album, that would be an impossible task for me to decide on. But that no one talks about or references it nearly as much as I do. I love that midway transition so much. Then the avant-garde "Revolution 9" freaked the hell out of my 11 year old mind. I was really confused and frankly scared my first few times hearing it, and I remember recording it on my phone then back-masking it. I blame this song for me liking weird avant-garde songs. Album ends on a lovely note, another quiet after the storm, kinda like the closing track "Radio 4" on PIL's Metal Box. I always underestimate the effect that Beatles music had on my life. If not for the Beatles, I would not be here writing these reviews. I believe it was this album in particular that gave me an appreciation for all sorts of music built on rock and pop. And it may have extended to allow me to appreciate different styles of art, and in general, different people's perspectives. Maybe that's a stretch. Not bad for an album I discovered myself as an 11 year old just because I heard the word Beatles thrown around on the radio along with popular songs I liked.

There are many great songs on this album most on disc 1. However, it did not need to be two discs. Disc two suffers and only a couple of songs are noteworthy.

First of all, I just want to point out the obvious: "The Beatles" must be the worst ever name for a band. Now that that's taken care of this album is incredible. Very eclectic but just about every song is amazing.

The Beatles are so omnipresent in our culture that I don’t often go back & listen to them. Playing this entire album made me realise, once again, how amazing they were. Even the duff/joke tracks are fantastic. But then I’ve always liked Rocky Raccoon more than most 😁

I had never listened to this whole album. I owned and loved Sgt Pepper and listened to that over and over again back in the day, but I couldn't afford many albums, and so I had Beatles compilations. They threw every kind of thing in this one, didn't they? I found some old loves, and some new favorites (including, but not limited to, Glass Onion, Bungalow Bill, Savoy Truffle). I liked the blues songs the least. I didn't finish the album in my first session, so when I was able to get back and listen to the rest, the first "song" was Revolution 9. Oh. Oh. Was it a local radio station that ended broadcasting each night with "Good Night"?

There's too much to say about this album. It's just terrific. Picked up on a lot of new things listening this time: disquieting stereo effects, interesting fade-outs and transitions between songs, lyrics I've never quite caught ("trying to make a dove-tail joint"). Such diverse musical styles but nothing sounds out of place. I love it mucho.

Haven’t personally sat and listened to any Beatles album before from beginning to end. I know as a child no one in my family owned any of their albums. Very curious how the next 99 minutes will be… I recall hearing most, but not all, the songs on The White Album before (from the can't recall hearing category is "Honey Pie", one of my favorites during this listen). There were also some songs that I have heard somewhere in the past, but completely forgot about ("The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", “Rocky Racoon”). I think what surprises me most (but really shouldn’t) is how whimsical this all is. Maybe because I mostly associated this album with Revolution 9 and Helter Skelter/Charles Manson I hadn’t expected that. Glad to have cleared up a terrible overgeneralization. Very much enjoyed The White Album's wild eclecticism. Only took me 53 years to get here but I am very glad I did.

This was a chore for me to get through, to be honest, There are definitely a few good songs to enjoy, but way too many silly or boring ones. For me, Blackbird is by far the best song.

Supremely disappointing. Album is much too long and lacks any sort of cohesion to keep you interested after about 30 minutes. I understand this is a double album, but there's virtually nothing about the second half that compels me, much less had it been an album on its own. I understand and can respect the novelty of exploring a new genre in every song, but barely any of the songs that were new to me caught my attention in any profound way. Where's the magic they captured on While My Guitar Gently Weeps? Can you Imagine being in a room with both John Lennon and Eric Clapton at the same time? (derogatory) 30% skips (probably more than that), and the one song I had saved coming into this album will likely be the only one I return to. There's just soooooo much that doesn't need to be here, particularly in the second half of the album, that the album suffers as a whole. To be fair, if any band had ever earned the right to make this album it's the Beatles, and I'm glad that people really like this. But this feels so much more like a collection of outtakes than a cohesive album. That's not a comment on the quality of the songs, as some of these songs are some of my favorite Beatles songs (notably Martha My Dear), but rather that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this album. 3.5 that I'm going to round down because good lord is the second disc tedious to get through.

Can't stand the Honey Pie songs, Bungalow Bill, and especially Revolution #9, but there's a ton to like here. The most uneven album of their later years, but still has so many essential songs. Best track: Dear Prudence

He intentado que me gusten los Beatles de una manera que no he intentado, creo, con nadie más, jaja. Sin embargo, no sé, no logran cuajar en mí. Luego tanta influencia (asumo) hace que muchas cosas me suenen a los Beatles, o incluso con bandas en el momento, como Pink Floyd. Agradable este disco, con altibajos para mí o sin mucha cohesión. No logro encontrar voces distintivas, pero la instrumentación está suave. "Dear Prudence", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "The Continuing Story..." (que se parece mucho a Pink Floyd), "Rocky Raccoon" (muy divertida, todo suena bonito además) y "Savoy Truffle" (que The Kills ahora pienso homenajearon con "Bitter Fruit") fueron las que más me gustaron. El final, al menos la edición remasterizada de dos discos, con "Revolution 9" y "Good Night" se me hizo muy extraño. Más parece el inicio de otro disco y la primera pues muy buena en su experimentación, la segunda suena a canción de cuna, justo, y que pudo usarse en La Bella Durmiente de Disney. 8/10

5th August 2021 Listened in the morning and throughout the day on my phone while working. One of the most influential albums ever, I'm not sure how I feel about the more experimental aspects of this but no doubting it's place in history. Number 8

What a mixture - some mad stuff in with the greats. Difficult to rate because this is all just a part of history. It's not their best album but includes some of their best songs. Obviously I love it but I'm torn. 4.5 would be about right, really. 4 isn't eniugh but 5 is too much. oh well..

Yes it’s long and yes it suffers from that thing all double albums suffer from in that its maybe bloated in places. And yes it takes a great deal of willpower to not skip past Revolution 9. However the fact of the matter is there are simply to many brilliant tracks here to list. A staggering, unrivalled collection of songs in one place. On the White album The Beatles are having fun, and they want you to have fun too.

This album is very long! And 90% of it is my favorite music of all time. The other 10% inspired some of the most horrific murders of all time. You win some you lose some.

The Beatles experimental album. Every song has unique feeling to it. But John's and George's songs are better than Paul's. If i had to choose the the most revolutionary song I'd choose "Helter Skelter", for what a pioneer it was for metal genre.

Some dumb crap at the end, thought I left a 5 minute long youtube pest control commercial on or something. There are a lot hits on this album, more than i realized.

This album has some of my favorite Beatles songs, but I’ve often overlooked many of the other songs. Despite a couple duds, still a great album!

Had decided long ago that I did not particularly enjoy The Beatles. Guess I hadn’t listened to this in a long time because I was definitely wrong. 4.5 out of 5 for me.

Honestly, the singles that I already knew and loved were the only ones that stuck out - and of course, they're great. They tell good and sad stories and they're entertaining to listen to. The rest of the album was still good rock and roll but I tuned out.

Thoughts: I mean, it's a classic Beatles album. Some *very* high highs here, but this double album is very front loaded - I skip 7 of the last 11 songs.

I’m conflicted by this album. It was the first Beatles album I ever listened to, and it has them at their most experimental, but it also has just so many bad songs: “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” and “Revolution 1” particularly stand out (no, I did not mistype “9” there; I said “1” and I meant “1”). The Beatles’ worst songs are all on this album. At the same time, I love it; I just recognize it takes a lot of effort to love it. I will say the production on this album is phenomenal. There are so many interesting ideas in this album. I loved the parodies of the Beach Boys, and there were lots of memorable guitar licks and chord progressions. Some of the Beatles' most creative work.

No review of this is going to break any ground obviously. Seems more relevant to mention the (few) negatives rather than why this always rates among the "best albums of all-time" - first off, it's obviously a bit long, and many (most?) of the filler songs are bad or pointless (Wild Honey Pie, Why Don't We Do It In The Road good god). I do love experimental weirdness but I think The Who did this kind of thing better (Sell Out; Tommy). Maybe not a popular opinion but some of John's songs are often mediocre to me, and that holds here as well (Yer Blues and I'm So Tired for example) - I'll take Paul's "corny" and melodic songs every day (e.g. "Mother Nature's Son" and "Martha My Dear") and more George Harrison songs would have been nice as While My Guitar Gently Weeps is perfect. No more negatives - the 20 (!!!!) or so best songs on this are legendary for a reason and the amazing variety is a perfect CV for why the Beatles were...The Beatles. Might seem wrong for me to give a 5 since I'd end up skipping/cutting maybe 20% of this but this would be 9/10 and dammit it's my scale. 9/10 5 stars

Its not perfect, but it tells the story of the Beatles better than any other album. As discussed, you can make an easy 5 star album out of it, but for the presence of a few fillers (and the fact Revolver is better), it gets 4.

Ohhhh yes. Experimental, psychedelia, old school rock n roll, the guys are just having a blast putting this together. I love this album.

С двойными альбомами ситуация интересная. Сделать полноценный двойной LP с единым звучанием и без проходных треков - дело более трудное, чем запилить обычный LP. На самом деле навскидку только "Сто лет одиночества" летовский вспоминается. В The Wall некоторые треки альбом будто аморфным делали. Так вот, стоит ли скидочку делать? Думаю, как минимум стоит глядеть иначе. В данном случае наберётся ли треков на пиздатый стандартный альбом? Думаю, да. Навскидку отметил: 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 11, 13, 17, 19, 20, 23, 26, 30. Helter Skelter вообще, возможно, в сотку моих любимых песен попадает. Или несколько соток, как минимум. Остальные треки раздражают, нагоняют скуки или душат? Да вроде нет. Есть и есть, пусть будут. Не лучший альбом в дискографии The Beatles, но, вероятно, один из 1001 лучших альбомов в истории человечества.

These guys are pretty good. I should listen to them a lot more. Seriously though, I dug into the history of this album and loved both the songs and the history.

It's the Beatles and it's hard to rate any of their work as anything but excellent. That being said, this album is as much of a release of a bunch of material prior to their break-up and could've potentially benefited from a single album's treatment.

This is absolutely an album everyone has to hear, but it isn't the Beatles at their best. The backstory and drama of the album are better than the album itself. It really should have been an album and then an outtakes album. The album has many good songs that were either ahead of their time or stood the test of time. Hey Jude came out of these sessions, but Rocky raccoon, back in the user, ob la di ob la da, helter skelter, bungalow bill, and while my guitar gently weeps are fantastic. Listening to the album, I hear songs that I forgot existed - Long long long, cry baby cry, and don't pass me by come to mind. Not a perfect album, but their most creative and still above average. I'm glad we have it. 3.5 stars

Solid album. Some epic songs. It's fascinating to me the variation in Lennon and McCartney's songwriting style, it feels like your feeling different influences coming through even if both were credited.

Mediocre album, it isn‘t terrible; has like 3 good songs but it is too long for my taste. (beatles are overrated)

Masterpiece. Even if you strip out the seemingly "throw-away" tracks (which actually are an important part of blending it all together) you would still have enough tracks to make a classic double album. Admittedly, this might be a tough listen to a non Beatles fan.

Two bangers amongst a flock of bollocks

a melange of Beatles classics. An interesting amount of unvarnished satirical raw energy. Enough variety that some of the lesser tracks fall through the cracks.

An eclectic collection, but I can't say I didn't enjoy some of the tracks even if some of the lyrics are nonsensical. The fact that my hearing issues make me not able to listen binaurauly probably impacted my enjoyment a good bit since it seems they used those types of soundscapes often.

30 tracks. A handful of absolute jams (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird and Helter Skelter probably top my list), a lot of quirky yet well executed stuff, and another handful of throwaways. I get that there’s more than enough odd stuff to turn some folks off, but to me this still one of the must-listen Beatles albums. Even some of the deeper tracks here are gems

Never been the biggest fan of the Beatles, was hoping listening to an album of theirs in full may help to change that. It didn’t. 3/5

I stand by what i said about the Beatles when we reviewed the Rolling Stones. The amazing highs here (Back in the USSR, While my Guitar, Blackbird, Helter Skelter) are soaring and better than anything the Stones ever did. Most of the album tracks wouldn't have made a stones b-side and are well below average. Some of the album tracks however are majestic (Yer Blues, honey pie, Rocky Raccoon). Did this need to be a double album and 30 songs long? No. There's a perfect 11 or 12 song album in there somewhere- its just a little bloated. Was it a massive step forward for rock n roll music globally? Absolutely. Did I enjoy listening for the first time since my post Oasis beatles phase in the early noughties? Of course I did. The lows are too low for a 5. but lets remember the highs! 4/5

Excellent first 10 or so tracks but the rest of the album left me a little underwhelmed. Bit of bias coming into it I guess as this is often mentioned as one of the best albums of all time. But again, hard to score when it's clearly an album of it's time and was revolutionary.

It's pretty messy and doesn't fit together as an album that well but still so so much good stuff on there. Amazing they were knocking these out twice a year

Scattered gems among a pile of gold.

Well, of course. Unlike other albums in the 1001 Albums project that I’ve commented on thus far, this album is one that I’ve owned and listened to hundreds of times over many decades. So these comments will be of a different nature. They will not reflect an analytical and synthetic appraisal of a new experience. Instead, they will bring (nearly) a lifetime of experience to bear on the declamation of a capstone assessment. I will not, however, charge tuition. Listened to in context from a distance of 53 years, it is plain to see that this album was artistically definitive at the time. Lennon and McCartney turned the musical world in a direction we are still following. It elevated mainstream rock from “culture-caused” to “culture-causing”. The tracks on this album are discrete, in that they each represent distinct musical compositions. This distinguishes it from the previous Sgt. Pepper and Revolver, each of which had unifying elements of composition and style. Despite this, it is revealing that no worldwide distribution singles were ever released from this album. More on this below. What unifies The White Album is not composition and style, but its determination to assert freedom from recording a “product” and forcing the production team to attend to the needs of the music itself. On every track, the musicians are now in charge. The White Album has been described (justifiably) as the first postmodern rock album. While this is true, many of these observers don’t seem to understand what postmodernism is. Without going into a long discussion on the philosophy of history, a brief description will enhance any listener’s appreciation of this particular album. Postmodernism is the philosophical/cultural development of the twentieth century that is characterized by the transcendence of the ‘settled’ verities of the Enlightenment (that is, it goes beyond modernity). Hence, it is “post-“ modern. A highly respected progressive Methodist pastor once asked me how was it possible that something could be “post-“ modern (He mistakenly equated “modern” with “up-to-date”). I explained it like I did in the previous paragraph and he nodded in a sincere attempt to overcome the disconnect I had just created in his entire worldview. Shortly thereafter he began losing his mind, although I’m not sure the two events are related. Anyway, The White Album is postmodern. Listening to it today with the digital tools we have at our disposal (Wikipedia, Genius, etc.), ‘boomers like me learn some things about the music we never knew before. We can correct some erroneous assumptions. For example, I never knew Ringo Starr did not play drums on “Back in the U.S.S.R.” Running out of time here, so I’ll continue this in another venue as time allows.

So we've had Abbey Road, Revolver and White Album. This one I am the most conflicted on - I love while my guitar gently weeps and blackbird then there is a LOT of crap I really dont like. Honeyyyy PIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HONEY PIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Merka at jeg er litt ferdig med beatles, men det er jo et godt album.

A bit lukewarm on this. The minor, downtempo tracks are the strongest whilst the rest feel overdone. 6/10, I preferred Sgt. Pepper's.

Nothing like a great Beatles album to whet the labium.

Re-listening for the generator; catching up to this one late to give it the continuous listen it deserves. So much interesting varied material; some of which, like the achingly beautiful "Blackbird", I saw Paul himself play in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University in 2017. Awesome show, great album. (P.S. - "Good Night" is one of the best closers ever, particularly as the chaser to the legendarily inscrutable "Revolution 9".) 8/10

I've heard this album and most of the songs before. It's not my favorite Beatles album but I like it.

Hay canciones buenas y muy buenas como: Back in the U.S.S.R., Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", The continuing history of Bungalow Bill, Will my guitar gently weeps, Happiness is a warm gun, Blackbird, Piggies o Sexy Sadie. Y por supuesto la canción que quisieron robarles: Helter Skelter.

You can tell that this album is being pulled in all sorts of directions by each of the members. But despite the length and clear fillers, below other Beatles work, to me it’s a masterpiece.
