Reviews (page 13 of 14)
It's really groundbreaking but I seem to be on a minority in that I really only like one out of five Beatles songs?
Overrated
a couple of decent tracks amongst a load of toss, a VERY generous 3rd star
It's alright. I like a few songs. Some are just ok. Not my favorite album. High 3s.
This album is pretty amazing but I have listened to it too many times and it is too long.
Half great, half shit
Some good, some bland
While My Guitar - Blackbird run på disk 1 er uforlignelig 🤌🤌
Twas alright. "Number 9" was annoying as fuck.
Solid album.
FAVS: Back In The USSR, Dear Prudence, While My Guitar…, Julia LEAST FAVS: Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Yer Blues 6/10 too long
Good but simple songs
Some really really good songs but with a double album a lot of (to me) filler
Well, this was interesting at least. I'm not a Beatles fan, but at least half of these songs don't sound like The Beatles. It was certainly longer than I wanted it to be, but it's a double-album so I can't really ding it for that. It was all over the place, but I think that was also intentional. So what I'm left with is this: I liked a few songs. I don't think I loved any of them, but it wasn't a slog to get through (other than the overall length and "Revolution 9"). The variety helped me get through it, but also detracted from it as an album. 2.9
Classic album from a classic band that a lot of people have at least heard about. I've listened to it before andit has some really good songs but a lot of them are in a style that I dont really like personally. A lot of the songs feel "samey" and straight up old. The Beatles contribution to music history is great but as something to listen to in 2024 when you haven't grown up with it around you it falls flat.
Usual Beatles frustrations. Hits so much better than the filler songs. Enough decent songs to have made one album and without the nonsense.
First Beatles album I ever bought. I got it because I liked 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun', 'Blackbird' and 'Helter Skelter'... and 4 good tracks is enough to get me to buy anything. I also knew 'Ob-La-Di' but didn't want to hold that against them. It's a lot to go through, and I don't really have much time for things like 'Piggies', 'Wild Honey Pie'... even though that latter is less than a minute long. Just leave that off mate. Really enjoyed 'Martha My Dear' and 'Goodnight' on top of the ones I already knew well. Not sure I'd ever really listen to this end to end again.
Solid album, but I'm not a big Beatles fan... Enjoyed side 2 of the album better, as it is more psychedelic. Helter Skelter is by far my favorite Beatles song.
The beatles have never done it for me. It's not that i dislike them, but i also don't get specially moved by the music. This album has a few songs that i found good, the most bluesy ones, but still not enough for an album with 30 songs. Solid 3.
Some gems here and there, but I just really wish this album had more cohesion in it.
First 15 songs I knew all of the words and loved them and the second 15 songs I only really knew a few songs really well.
First of all, albums shouldn't be this long! There are some fun tracks here but also a lot of weird filler. It's still the Beatles though, how bad can it be?
This album was too long. While there were a couple bops, there weren’t enough to really elevate this album for me.
Familiar with a lot of these tracks already like happiness and ussr. Revolution 9 was an interesting track. I like how the Beatles sound like they’re just having fun, goofin around in the stu. An iconic album for sure glad to have listened all the way through.
I’ve never gotten into the Beatles, but I quite enjoyed this album, 3.5.
Honestly probably doesn't break my top 3 favorite Beatles albums.
Some good songs, some meh songs. I do not get the hype for the Beatles, I feel like I'm missing something. They're a good band and even a revolutionary band for the 60's, but the best rock n roll band of all time?
First listen. Enjoyed the first part more than the second. Ok.
Better than I thought
It is influential for sure, but seems overrated. My first time actually listening to the Helter Skelter song, and it turned out to be quite good, probably my favourite from this album
This album consists of a large variety of soft songs and energetic rock songs. I was able to enjoy the album although I do find it to be too long at 1 hour and 33 minutes in length. I did not like the song Revolution 9 at all. Standout tracks: Back In The U.S.S.R, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Julia, Birthday, Helter Skelter, Good Night
Meh. Ok but tired of listening to old sounds
Some great, classic tracks but like most double albums too long...
Erm, loads of good stuff in here but it’s so long. I didn’t like it as much as other beatles albums so far tho.
it turns out the beatles made pretty good music? is anyone talking about this? though I don't know if it's gotta be 90 minutes long
Probably the most over rated album of all time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad album, just that it doesn't deserve the hype and praise that it receives. It has some good songs, some mediocre songs, and some crap songs. As an album it's bloated and directionless.
Great listen
Context: I generally like the Beatles, but have never really listened to many albums. Don’t know why, guess I just thought I knew their many hits so was happy with that. So this list I’m sure will rectify the situation. 100 albums in and this is the first one up, and supposedly a classic, which somehow I’ve never listens to before.. Review: Well, to cut a very long double album short, it’s not a classic. Yeah there’s a smattering of great/good songs on here. But it just veers across styles at a great rate with a lot of average tunes. I just found myself listening and wishing the next tune was gonna be a banger, which invariably it wasn’t, so in the end I was just wishing it to end, by which point Revolution no.9 just kicks you in the bollox painfully before rubbing your nose in it by ending on an absolute dud. Seriously, whoever classes this as a great album needs to really needs to listen to it properly without the rose tinted spectacles (I’m Very confident I will prefer other albums). It’s pretty boring, and when George Harrison writes probably the best song on the album I think you have the evidence. I rest my case.
The album is in two discs on Spotify so I'm going to listen to them separately. A-side: fairly good soft rock. I think my expectations were a bit high, given The Beatles reputation. 3.5/5 B-side: Didn't like it as much, Revolution 9 was really cool though, whatever it was. 3/5 Total: 3/5
Relajante supongo?
A few hits but mostly weirdness.
I can see how influential this album was to the genre and time. I might have to listen a few more times to get into it, but it has some good tunes. Long albums take long to digest so I'll need a few more days, maybe weeks. General personal and subjective rating is like a 3 for now, not a lot REALLY CATCHES me but maybe I just need to train my ear to 60ies music..
3.5
3.5
Ok
Already listened.
From Disc 1 I'd say only 'While my Guitar Gently Weeps' is really 4+ stars song, 'Blackbird' is okayish and the rest is mediocre at best. 'Ob-la-Di Ob-la-Da' is exactly what I have in mind when I think of The Beatles: silly songs that make me question the sanity of people around me. 'Helter Skelter' is nice as well, and overall I'd say Disc 2 is more interesting, even though it has some shitty songs in there. The album deserves 2 stars, but I will give it another one because having one song that I like a lot is already quite a feat.
The first half of the album is actually very good and arguably sets the foundation for the next half century's worth of pop and rock music. The second half of the album is very experimental and the quality of the music experiences a steep drop off. Because of that. This album is average at best despite being foundational to many genres of music within modern western civilization
Never been a fan of the beatles sound but this one was ok I guess. Lots of variety in the style of the songs but a bit too polished/poppy for my taste.
What a behemoth of an album with 30 or so songs. There are some Beatles classics here like ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Ada’, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, and ‘Blackbird’ for example, but also some real low points like ‘Piggies’ that felt like some Victorian court jester’s theme. ‘Rocky Racoon’ is a quirky little tale which was quite fun, and ‘Revolution 1’ was a song that I’ve never heard before but I really liked! Other than that it was… pretty bland honestly. And how are you supposed to knock out 30 bangers in an album? I find this pretty hard to rate. Should you credit the album for its highs, or give it a score for the complete experience? I think I’ll have to go with the latter, and since there are so many subpar songs I can’t really stretch any further than 3. It just ain’t that good in my opinion, no matter how well renowned The Beatles are.
to me the weakest beatles album
In amongst the flotsam produced by a band beginning to crash onto the rocks and break apart, a truly stellar album could be found, if the crap was removed and the gems truly allowed to shine for what they are, a shame that it's not as good as it could or should be.
Beatles at their most bloated with their stonermost songs and most deserty mix, yet also incredible lulls and most questionable creative decisions, let's not kid ourselves. Could have been trimmed a bunch and released as two separate albums, as the double-album of it all was wholly unnecessary.
Honestly, it’s the Beatles. I expected to like this more but I found so many of the songs boring or tedious. Maybe it’s just really hard to like entire albums of anyone’s work.
I respect what the Beatles did for music but i don't like the Beatles.
Three songs into this album and I am honestly pretty bored. I do like the peppiness of ob-la-di. I also have loved While My Guitar Gently Weeps for a long time. Much of the instrumentation on this album is irritating to me. Very boppy, but in a grating way. I like more songs on this album than I did on Sgt. Pepper. Revolution 9 is maybe the most horrifying song in existence.
It's much more weird and experimental(almost prog rock) than the vision I had in my head of what the Beatles are (mostly based on the greatest hits). I would agree with Frankie that there isn't alot of genuine emotion in most these songs; but to me some are pleasant or fun to listen to. An exception for me is 'while my guitar gently weeps' which I think is a beautiful song. Happiness is a warm gun also has a satisfying arch/cresendo when it gets to the title stanza for me. It could have been 8 songs IMO. but i like this one more than Sargent pepper.
Some great songs on here but too many filler tracks. In terms of their discography this lands in the middle.
Incredible songs with a bunch of bloated filler that makes it drag on for too long.
I enjoy some songs, but Sgt pepper is far more enjoyable
Beetles, whatever
Not bad
Not my fave. Too much satar.
There is a reason why you have not heard the majority of songs on this album - They just are not good enough. Much as though I love The Beatles, this could and should have been an extraordinary single album. Why did they add the weak numbers? Because they thought they were invincible. For these reasons its a 3
I’m not as moved by this collection of Beatles tracks as I am after hearing other albums of theirs. The White Album is ok but I don’t find it astounding.
Some great stuff on here, but some guff (Bungalow Bill for one) and it's too long.
There's too much going on here. You can feel the lack of cohesion in the band. There are some incredible songs here but the influence of everyone creeps in one by one resulting in some great, some okay, and some pretty bland songs.
This is like a potluck. George brought a casserole, Paul brought mash potatoes with gravy, John brought a watermelon and Ringo brought nacho cheese doritos. Sure you will probably feel satiated, but these things didn't compliment each other. A couple of the best 5 star songs don't make this a 5 star album.
A lot of nonsense but also some gems (Glass Onion my beloved!). Favourite track: Honey Pie.
In Teilen wunderschöne Musik, andere, experimentelle Songs eher mäßig.
I like the Beatles but I'm not as fond of the white album. It always feels scattered to me. A collection of good songs but no cohesion
Number 8 [Belch] Number 8 [Belch] Number 8 [Belch] There are some truly brilliant Beatles tracks here. And some utterly abysmal. Overlong and incohesive as an album - if they hadn't immediately preceded this with Sgt Pepper's, it wouldn't have had the same punch.
This album was like spaghetti at the wall. Some sticks, some not so much. It’s probably my least favorite album of theirs from the second half of their career.
The highs are high. I do not like how long it is.
this is variable, which is what happens when 4 writers/singers are in a band - some excellent songs, some quirky, some mediocre
Some great songs up front. The b sides aren't as strong.
Some good, some trash. A classic example of "if you'd reduced it to a single album and got rid of the shite, it would be a hella lot better lads"
I can't in good conscience give an album that has 10 songs you could easily dump in the trash anything higher than a 3
way too much filler
Some absolutely lovely songs here but no album needs to be 30 songs and 90 mins
Yes, the Beatles are good, but come on they could have cut some of these songs.
So for me to love an album it has to be somewhat cohesive. Ignoring the fact that this is a Beatles record there are a few songs I like. But there's more messy songs than good songs.
Too Beatles-y
In a nutshell: It’s not their best, and it’s not their worst. This was recorded when the band was fracturing so there’s a lot of material that is “let’s mess around and see what sticks”. That’s the vibe I got anyway. John goes bluesy and avant garde, Paul indulges more in self penned ragtime/vaudville-esque tunes. George truly shines with While My Guitar Gently Weeps* (which is easily one of my top ten favourite Beatles songs of all time) and Ringo does a solid job of closing the album with Good Night. Should it have been a double album? No. I think it could have been a great single LP**. Yet again, we would not have known that The Beatles could still record downright weird and batshit crazy music without LSD. Overall: 6/10 *If you haven’t seen the 2004 R&RHOF live performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, find it immediately. It’s a loving tribute to George on his induction as a solo artist and you get to see Prince shred at the end. **This is my contribution to the “what if The White Album was released as a single record?” argument. With this cut, we get two George songs, Paul’s strongest tracks are there, a “John with Yoko” track is included and we finish with a Ringo song: SIDE A: Back In The USSR, Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, Mother Nature’s Son, I’m So Tired, Blackbird, Julia, I Will. (Side A length: 20:44) SIDE B: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter, Long Long Long, Goodnight. (Side B length: 21:39) Tracks relegated to singles and B-sides: Birthday, Cry Baby Cry, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, Don’t Pass Me By.
Classic Beatles, but....listening to this again it feels like a bunch a stuff they each were thinking about and working on and then just stuck it all together. No sense of theme or forethought, or even much feeling of collaboration. A time they were starting to head in different directions and were working on stuff separately more, and it feels present in the music.
All time classic
The seemingly random track order (especially compared to their previous proggy albums) grew on me. Still, a lot of filler. Obla Di Obla Da makes me feel ill, but Revolution 9 is a favourite. Hot take: Yoko Ono is a better artist than John Lennon ever was.
A bunch of diverse songs - stating the end of the Beatles.
The hits are good, but overall the sound of this album is really all over the map.
I haven't listened to this album fully in many years. I'm sad to say, for me, it doesn't hold up as well as I remember. There's so much filler nonsense that is a waste of time. The track listing needs significant editing down to maybe 20 tracks which I've heard is a popular exercise with this one. There are some amazing experimental and iconic tracks, but it's self indulgent and just simply too much.
I like the Beatles but I’m not sure I love this album. There are a few iconic songs on it. I love blackbird. I can also see how this album influenced others subsequently.
Some iconic songs that I enjoyed. The Continuing Story Of Buffalo Bill my dad sings to my kids all the time. Not sure I realized it was Beatles song. A lot of songs I could/would just skip. There’s got to be better Beatles albums.
Is ob-la-di subversive? (And who knew it was called that and not Life Goes On?). - Blackbird, gorgeous. - Piggies…anti-capitalist satirical screed? - Revolution 9 feels experimental/trippy - Good Night is beautiful, orchestral lullaby. Kind of boring album though…a lot of songs are dull. Could have been edited down to a regular-length album.
There are so many good songs on this album offset by garbage.
always sounds average for me
I've deliberated over what rating I should give this album for far longer than I should. I listened to it 3 or 4 times. The most I've listened to it since 2003 when I tried to give The Beatles a chance buying every album post Rubber Soul but just couldn't get with them. I still can't. I love Good Night as a track but it also makes me want to listen to Ekkehard Ehlers - Plays John Cassavetes instead of listening to this album in its entirety. Again.
I guess I expected to enjoy this more seeing as it is The Beatles. Most of it I just didn't seem to connect with, although giving more than one listen is improving my opinion of some songs (in some cases considerably). I could see this album as one I may rate higher in the future once I've listened to it more. Didn't know most of the songs prior to this. My favourite was by far and away While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I don't know what to make of Revolution 9. Savoy Truffle sounded kind of weird in my headphones.
Okay. Enjoyed some parts more than others. Generally mixed feelings.
One of their better albums but I feel there a lot of filler on here to make it a double album. It is not one that I listen to all the way through but there's plenty of songs I listen to frequently.
This is crazy. 1073rd album Actually very underwhelming 3
I remember this album, Uncle Randy had it shortly after it came out. It’s actually better than I remember, a lot of good songs, a few great songs, some you can’t listen to, Side 4 only got played once, and a bit too long. Always liked Rocky Racoon and Birthday the most. Rev 9 is more noise than song, pure filler. White Album at (3.5*s)
Några låtar är repetitiva och glättiga.
So many nothing songs on this album interspersed with hits
It was enjoyable I liked Happiness is a warm gun and Blackbird a lot
i dont really care enough about the beatles to finish this very long album but it sounds ok
Encore eux ?
Inconsistent is a good word. For every hit there are probably two pieces of filler that could have been cut; therefore this double LP feels more akin to multiple EPs from individual artists. Mixing is also somewhat primitive. Fat needs trimmed; doesn't even feel like a conventional Beatles album. Low point: "Don't Pass Me By."
There’s lots of good stuff on this but it’s just way too much. And the quirky, odd, silly bits don’t really work for me.
Completely understand the significance, but probably one of my least favourite Beatles albums. This may actually be the first ever 'Data Dump' album, I'd probably cut most of the Lennon songs to be honest. Helter Skelter, Sexy Sadie, Blackbird and Guitar Gently Weeps are all Beatles classics however.
Another one that exceeded expectations.
I think this suffers from the weight of over-hype. It’s fine but it’s way longer than it needs to be. You can’t tell me these boys really thought they had 30 unskippable bangers that everyone needed to hear. Cut it to a nice clean dozen and I could see it being four stars.
Not one of my favorite Beatles albums, there are many good songs but too many shippable or just annoying ones.
So long, just impossible to stay engaged without a narrative structure running throughout an album of this length. But, still a classic of course and worth visiting from time to time
Haven't listened to it in its entirety for probably 20 years and I suspect I fall into the 'this is overrated' camp. Some of my favourite Beatles songs are here (Julia, Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter) and I'm a sucker for all the self-referential stuff, but Revolution 9 has to be one of the most pointless and self-indulgent things ever committed to tape. Their sound collage stuff works well as an enhancement to what they are good at (songs!) but doesn't stand up on its own merit - it feels like an overreach. I look forward to listening to this again in 2044.
Eurocentristas
Didn’t know most songs. Interesting, didn’t stick
Couple really good songs, quite a few that shouldve been cut if it were up to me. 1h30m is too much when half the songs are just ok.
joyful, beatles like, story told in songs, bit weird vibe sometmes,
Listening to this entire album all the way through is a journey for sure. There's a lot of good songs but there's also a lot of bullshit. Altogether its eclectic and lacking quality control (do we really need 30 tracks here, guys?) Some of them are borderline circus piano and I really disliked Bungalow Bill (probably because I feel like I know this person). What did you kill? My ears, ghat. Did I enjoy this? Not really. Does it below on this list? Absolutely, yes.
This album is very schizophrenic. Some absolute classics surrounded by tracks that hardly qualify as songs. 30 songs and 90 minutes was excessive. While it is still essential album for music history, it works have been better served had they trimmed a lot of the fat. I can only imagine how it rocked the world and influenced so much at the time. 60 years later it's still an important album but i don't expect myself to spend extended time with The White Album moving forward. 2.75 stars but gets the bump for to how iconic everything about The Beatles and this specific album are.
I enjoyed many of the individual songs, but found the whole album experience to be very disjointed. I feel like this could have been two cohesive albums, or one cohesive album and a few well-matched EPs.
it’s ok
Canciones favoritas: - While my Guitar Gently Weeps. - Happinnes is a Warm Gun. - Revolution 1.
This album really opened my eyes to the broad range of what are “Beatles songs.” I had heard Back in the USSR and While my Guitar Gently Weeps before listening to this, and I assumed that Back in the USSR was as hard rock-ish as the Beatles could get. I couldn’t be more wrong and this album showed just how broad the band could be. In that sense, this was a fascinating album to listen to. As an album, though, it just doesn’t make sense. There is no cohesion between the 31 songs, and so many of them are downright awful. If this were any other band, the album would be criticized and dismissed; as it is the Beatles - who I believe are good, but very overrated - it gets a pass and is lauded for being all over the place. As someone who is not a huge Beatles fan, I don’t give them a pass for this. The album is decent, but certainly not great, although there are enough good songs on here that they could have had an excellent album if they were capable of getting along when this was released.
Some hits, some misses, too long.
First time listening in full, but have listened to every song at least once. Revolution 9 is garbage but everything else is great. Julia is a new song that I have not paid attention to before but like a lot.
As someone not particularly well versed in The Beatles and who really doesn’t have anything particularly smart to add, I’ll just regurgitate the points that the good songs are great, nobodies gonna agree on what the good songs actually are, and that it’d could have done with a good number of the tracks cutting. Honestly, I’m looking forward to other Beatles albums more, so that I can get a better grip on them. I feel like The White Album is not the place yo start. Watch me get Sgt Peppers immediately after this
Solid
idk how to feel, definitely some stinkers in there, but also some really really good ones, the album could be half the length
Bit weird in places.
Disjointed, jarring, chaotic, bloated, overrated and influential. There are good songs. Dear Prudence is beautiful. While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Helter Skelter are bangers. The playing is good. However, Obla Di Obla Da is flat out terrible. There's no denying the impact the Beatles had. But just because they were the first doesn't mean they were the best.
Decent album. The good songs are good, but the bad ones are real bad. On a side note: I didn’t know that the Beatles sang the original “dear prudence” I was only familiar with Siouxsie and the Banshees version.
Some I recognized. Lots and lots of songs many started to blend together.
I put on the album thinking it would be an easy 4. It’s the Beatles, I know the album, it’ll be fun, and I would be listening to it while on a road trip with my teenager. And … we’re both underwhelmed. There are a few great songs, like While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Helter Skelter, but as a whole the album is incoherent and tediously long. Sorry everyone who thinks the Beatles are the bees’ knees, but I’ll pass.
Obviously a few great songs. But a lot of it is meh. Editing exists for a reason, this album did not need to be this long.
Good album, nice variety of sound. Beatles rarely disappoint
mid range, back half is weird
Back In The U.S.S.R. - 7/10 Dear Prudence - 6/10 Glass Onion - 10/10 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - 10/10 Wild Honey Pie - 7/10 The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill - 6/10 While My Guitar Gently Weeps - 10/10 Happiness Is A Warm Gun - 10/10 Martha My Dear - 6/10 I'm So Tired - 6/10 Blackbird - 10/10 Piggies - 6/10 Rocky Raccoon - 7/10 Don't Pass Me By - 6/10 Why Don't We Do It In The Road? - 7/10 I Will - 6/10 Julia - 7/10 Birthday - 7/10 Yer Blues - 7/10 Mother Nature's Son - 7/10 Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey - 6/10 Sexy Sadie - 10/10 Helter Skelter - 10/10 Long, Long, Long - 7/10 Revolution 1 - 7/10 Honey Pie - 7/10 Savoy Truffle - 6 /10 Cry Baby Cry - 7/10 Revolution 9 - 6/10 Good Night - 6/10 TOTAL - 190/300
Just a classic, chill rock mood.
Some real classics on this album but it's so bloated by so much other random stuff it makes it a difficult listen.
3.5/5 - Good album for the first 1.5/3 discs/sides, but it's not wall to wall bangers. Revolution 9 is awful though and taints the whole experience.
I think this could have been a 5/5 but it's just too bloated with songs that, in comparison to the really good songs, feel like filler, there just isn't enough good content for a double record. I'm not sure revolution 9 should even be included on any album, sounds like a bad Stockhausen cover. As a result a high 3. Highlights include while my guitar gently weeps, blackbird, helter skelter, ob-la-di, ob-la-da and glass onion.
It was a really long album since it was a double album. I'm generally not a fan of super long albums especially if it meanders through the songs. There were some standouts but most were forgettable and there was really no consistency which made me think that I was still on the same album. It's a fine listen but nothing crazy. Also didn't listen to it that focused so that may be a factor
How fuckin long is this thing. Jesus. It's good, but Christ they keep going
Some hits and some weird duds.
Mixed bag of songs, some of their best some of their worst…
3.36 per track. Some weird tracks on this.
I know it’s a revolutionary (haha) album but it’s not the most listenable thing and has a lot silliness that feels like what a band who can do anything would do. The high points are amazing.
Better than I expected given my general lukewarm feelings toward The Beatles. The first track was my favorite, though a few others stood out as good songs also.
No
My scale is: 5 - Pretty much perfect. 4 - In my Spotify list. 3 - Perfectly fine and listenable. 2 - I didn't enjoy listening to or got annoyed by the album. 1 - Couldn't finish the album.
Some nice songs but not too many standouts for me.
Good album, Beatles not really a band I like.
Eclectic.
Too long. Not as good as other Beatles albums
this album could have (should have) been 8 songs long and it would have been great. Instead you get artists who have reached the point where they thing every single musical fart they come up with is soooo important and has to be heard by the masses.
Any song that mentions a woman's name is a no. Some decent ones. Back in the U.S.S.R. is a bop, and Helter Skelter is really good. ob-la-di is decent. bigger hits aren't too bad. bungalow bill would be much better without the background vocals.

Half these tracks are great, some of my favorite Beatles songs (Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, Back in the USSR) and the other half are mediocre at best and obnoxious at worst. I guess that kind of speaks to what was going on with the band at the time. Does it work as an album? Not for me. A 45 minute cut of this would be much better imho. Maybe you had to be there
Ive never been a huge Beatles fan. I recognize their impact on music, I just never got on that train. Some of the tracks are fantastic, and some are just silly nonsense. Wild Honey Pie, Bungalow Bill, Piggies, Ricky Racoon? Hope this classic gets better.
Way too many "fuck around" songs and the classics are too few
Some gems, some junk. The experimentation is cool but hardly worth replaying.
Fine, couple of good songs
This is everything that I expected it to be: overlong, bloated, confused, odd, bizarre, experimental, interesting (in places), frustrating and with some absolute classic bangers. You can absolutely hear the egos fighting for control as the band spirals into the death throes. There are some tracks I really enjoyed on here - and starting with Back in the USSR is genius. Then I reckon you could get most of a decent album out of this if you just took the tunes that make a real impact. And most of the rest just isn't very good I'm afraid. As an album it's pretty shite. Take those 30 minutes worth of gold and add a couple of fillers and you've got an album worth listening to time and thime again (and I'll take the Siouxsie version of Dear Prudence as well fwiw).
Undeniably a classic album. To be completely honest, didn't love it. Feels not cohesive, apart from the well known songs, i didn't enjoy it so much i fear. Wouldn't re-listen to all of it for fun. Sorry guys.
The first Beatles album I ever really WANTED to like, and I didn't. Too long, too all over the place and a little juvenile for my tastes. I WILL revisit but maybe just the best stuff that are hand picked for me.
Overrated. I like the other ones more. I think I’m burnt out from all the British rock lol.
pretty classic, I'm not bothered by it as background music. I'll probably never reach for it but won't be upset if it's on. Don't pass me by makes me grumpy (I don't like the sounds)
Not the best Beatles album IMO, there are a few good cuts but it jumps around a bit and no real coherence as an album.
3/5 Best: While My Guitar Gently Weeps Worst: Good Night
I’m so tired was my favorite. Feel like lots of these songs could have been left on the cutting room floors. I’m sure I’ll enjoy one of these some day.
The highlights are immense. But also, there are parts of it... Wtf. There is filler and it doesn't feel cohesive or coherent, more like a bunch of sketches
The Beatles Album of all time.
The White Album sits below Sgt Pepper and Rubber Soul for me. It's well put together, a bit too twee in places but that's them, and a few really good songs. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is always an incredible track but there's not enough here to get a 4/5, it's a 3.
Eerlijk is eerlijk.
There are some all time bangers on here. There's also a lot of just ok to not good songs. It's a 3.5 but that 8 and a half minute track of noise is making round down.
Some lovely songs in there, but some of the more 'avant-garde' stuff was a bit shit
3. It's a good album, I enjoyed listening to it for this challenge but honestly, I don't think I'll come back to it. Maybe I'll listen to a couple of the songs again but as a whole it's just not quite my cup of tea.
Not huge on Beatles was ok
I was looking forward to this - I love the Beatles. Or so I thought. I think I like some Beatles. In small bursts. This was a bit much.
I thought the first half of this album was phenomenal and had a bunch of solid tracks such as Dear Prudence, ob-la-di ob-la-da, and while my guitar gently weeps. I thought I was jumping into a damn near perfect album till I saw the length of this bad boy. The second half contains some of the worst I’ve heard from the Beatles, however their worst isn’t all that bad in general. Overall I feel like this album was almost too psychedelic at some points, which really lost me. Still a pretty solid album overall though
I had notes from the past day. I forgot to save them and then I couldn't recover them. Oh well, it was a solid album, way too long of an album though. The first disk of the record had the hits, while the second one had mainly deep trippy stuff that I really do not care for.
Pretty good
eh
i had some hateful review with no rating when i hadnt even heard the album. weird. anyway, ive never been much for this style of album, i usually prefer something tight and clean. theres some great tunes (sexy sadie, helter skelter, while my guitar gently weeps) but im just gonna go back to those rather than this whole bloated mess.
Some of my favorite Beatles songs are on this album, but there’s also a good chunk of this album that I don’t like.
I feel like I'm obligated to give this a 5 for some reason but "Wild Honey Pie" dropped it to a 2 all by it's little lonesome. "While my guitar gently weeps" brought it back up to a 4. That song is gold. 'Happiness is a warm gun,' whoops, back down to 3. Long story short, this album has moments of greatness.
Ein Klassiker...ganz schwierig. Was zählt meine Meinung da schon gegen millionen Anderer.
So many all-time, forever known songs. Huge album. Some songs I would deem throwaway due to being too jumpy and energetic in the Beatles fashion that I am not as partial to (beach boys sound). Those that hit do hit though.
Ok, so I thought this album started out as a 5. There were songs in the middle which made me think maybe this album is a 4. By the end, which overstayed it’s welcome, I was wanting to turn it off. By the time revolution 9 came on I was just over it. So even though my favorite beetles song is on this album, it’s a 3. T3B 1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 2. I’m So Tired 3.
Want to listen to beatles chronologically so I listened to please please me instead the rating will be for the debut not the white album
Not bad.
The Beatles are good Album a bit long at 1 hour and 33 minutes
Kind of couldn't be arsed listening to it properly. Heard plenty of the beatles.
I'm not sure how to feel about this album. The good is really good, but there's a chunk of weird and experimental stuff that doesn't always work. Not that I'm against pushing the envelope so to speak, I really like some music I would consider very weird and experimental. I just don't know if most of it worked or even sounded good. I don't think the Beatles are any better by Wild Honey Pie or Why Don't We Do It In The Road existing. Savoy Truffle is pretty good from a musical standpoint, I don't think I understand the lyrics, or maybe they're meant to be just plain odd. Revolution 9 feels like I'm undergoing an experiment and drifiting in and out of sleep while the words "number nine" are being played through speakers constantly to see how it affects my brain waves and my dreams. It definitely is different and I would consider it a good different, but also feels like it might give me nightmares. This album opened my eyes to some good Beatles songs I didn't know existed, but it also left me asking "why?" and "what the fuck am I listening to?" more than I would have hoped. I definitely will come back to listen to some of these songs again, but the album as a whole I will probably not. Favorite Tracks: Back In The U.S.S.R., Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Birthday, Helter Skelter
3.8 + I’ve rarely listened to this album without the skip button close at hand. Plumbing its depths once again, I can see why that’s the case. Realistically I’d cut about half the songs on here. But intermingled are some of my favorite Beatles tracks as well as some wildly zany ditties, which makes it a rewarding if confounding listen. At best I’d say it adds a very interesting curveball to a catalog that would otherwise feel too polished.
Still just not a huge Beatles guy. I can recognize the impact they had on rock but I can't fully get into any of their albums. Songs here and there that I like and enjoy but overall I don't find myself seeking out Beatles music.
This is a confusing album to rate. This album showcases The Beatles at their absolute best, serving more than a dozen undeniable all-time classics. The drawback is, that's not even half of the album. This thing has 30 songs spanning over 90 minutes, and mixed in among the aforementioned classics are some songs that are banal and forgettable, but also some songs that contend for the absolute worst in The Beatles' discography (see Wild Honey Pie, Sabor Truffle, and the perplexing 8-minute long Revolution 9). There's a universe where this album is half as long and contends for one of the all-time greats, but the severe bloat and lack of consistency within sadly knocks a couple points off of it.
Honestly this one should get a two because it has so many shitters on it but it has some of my favorite Beatles songs on it. Mix between revolver and hard days night
A mixed bag, and much too long.
Pretty good, not their best
Too folksy. Too bloated. If I never hear blackbird again it'll be too soon.
The least good of the really good Beatles albums and the one I would probably leave out of my personal list if I was ever inclined to make one. Some of their best songs among some really forgettable tunes, unfortunately. There's an amazing single album in here somewhere, but the thing just drags a bit too much as a double album.
I do like the Beatles.
Beatles are overrated
Thought I was going to like it more. Too long and weird towards the end. Love Blackbird
A bit hit and miss really. Prefer the Beatles when they do the music not when they do the weird shit.
An album I loved as a teenager so I was looking forward to listening to it. Some tracks were great but overall it wasn’t as great as I remembered. Also my tastes have changed and developed over time. I was going to give 4* but that would just be for the nostalgia so a fairer reflection of the music would be a high 3*
Setting the mold for extended double-and-beyond albums, this record goes for it. Bangers? Quasi-solo songs? Experiments, failed or otherwise? Yes, yes, and yes. It's a showcase of a band that has hit its peak and begin to come apart at the seams.
Urgh - the Beatles Although to be fair I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
A noted Beatles hater, I enjoyed quite a bit of this album. Love Dear Prudence. Liked Back in the USSR, Everybody's got something to give and Helter Skelter. My high school used to play Today is your birthday, over the intercom, then announce the names of everyone had a birthday that day. Ended that around junior year. Ob la di, oh la da may be most annoying song ever.... I enjoyed a good portion. 3
Good, but mostly the popular songs
A couple of good tracks, but for the most part I was a bit bored. Perhaps I just have to be in a Beatles mood. USSR is always good. Gently Weeps had some David Gilmour-esque guitar work which I liked. Happiness is a Warm Gun was also a standout.
Incoherent and all over the place, but it makes for a fun listen. The playfulness is felt through the songs, which are mostly individually strong. The runtime is long, but the wide palette of sounds prevents the album from being a drag to listen to. Favs: Dear Prudence, Martha My Dear, I Will, Helter Skelter, Revolution 9
Got some great songs on.... While my guitar gently weeps and blackbird. Helter skelter too.... But also a lot of shite
Las canciones más cañeras estaban muy bien. Del resto, muchas indiferentes y algunas insoportables.
Exceptional for its time and influential as they come, but not 100% my favourite album, not even my favourite Beatles album. Thanks!
The White Album was a trip to listen to with it being an 1 hour and 30 minutes long. This record is unbalanced and far from polished. I do love the experimentation throughout the album, even if sometimes it didn't sound great. The album had it's peaks and it's filler. You can always expect filler on a double album. Overall, I did enjoy the album even if it was very long and bloated at times. Favorite Tracks: Back in the U.S.S.R., Dear Prudence, Helter Skelter Least Favorite Tracks: Wild Honey Pie, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Revolution 9
Released while the group was going through some rough times, and it shows. First time listening to the complete album is years, I forgot how many animal mentions there are (goofy Paul). Speaking of Paul, his choice to keep songs like Ob-la-di, Why Don't We Do It In The Road and I Will on an already bloated album. Also his order of tracks on side 1 and 2 and equally bizarre (I Will into Julia specifically). His contributions to this album are mostly goofy and do nothing for me, the one exception being Blackbird, a lovely song. This is really some of John's best work; Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, Happiness is a Warm Gun, and Yer Blues. His ability to help everyone else shine is never more clear. George and Eric Clapton on While My Guitar Gently Weeps is another stand out track, and my favorite Harrison Beatle song. Overall a disjointed and overloaded album, that includes some beautiful moments. The highs are high and the lows and low.
Even though ive heard many of the these songs hundreds? of times, I dont remember ever actually listening *the album*, in order. Here we go. Starts off rocking, with the Beatles doing their best impression of the Beach Boys. I dont think ive ever heard Glass Onion.... wow, drugs. OblaDa - fun and silly. classic. Wild Honey Pie. WHAT. THE. FUCK. While my Guitar Gently Weeps - I absolutely love this song. So far, it does not belong in the album at all....ever? hmm. Blackbird is lovely of course. It is strange to hear these great songs just mixed in with these other songs. Yer Blues was enjoyed by me. HelterSkelter - nice and heavy. I didnt know they did different versions of Revolution. Savoy Truffle. Sounds delicious. Number 9. Number 9. Number 9. I do like the ending on a soft lullaby, good night song. IMO and disappointingly, this album is not great and should not be included in this list of greatest albums. There are some serious tone/vibe management issues. And just because there are GREAT songs mixed in, there are also plenty of songs that are straight up bad.
A LOT of filler, and a few gems. Earlier Beatles albums are much stronger and more worthy of the praise this one gets. Also LOL at drugged out hippies killing people because of this album.
some extremely good songs mixed in with filler wacky songs. there's not a cohesive sound for the album. dear prudence is really good, if it was more songs like this id listen to the album again.
Some classic songs on the White Album, but I feel it is overly long with too many of the weird concept songs to listen all the way through on a regular basis.
white, massive influence on younger generations and wayyy too long. remind you of anything???😘 i don’t mind a long album, but this didn’t need to be so long, got fairly repetitive and a few album fillers. lots of strong songs i liked revolution 9, good to see musically good, shame they’re scouse downloaded the first half best beatles album 6.8/10
Chock full of classics with some weird ones in there. Back in the USSR, While my guitar and helter skelter are orgasmic. Obviously massively influential but too long and too many shitters. Bungalow Bill carried. 3.9/5
Mixed bag of classic and totally forgettable. Highlights: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon.
i fucking hate this album. except for the songs i like. this is tough because i do really like the beatles but this is where it starts to go downhill for me.
This is not the classic I expected. Random throwaways paired with well-recognized tunes extended for a very long time.
Probably my least listened to Fabs L.P. An extraordinary record by any standard, there is a problem with Beatles fatigue and parts of it (Revolution 9) are unlistenable.
Good
It undeniably has some beautiful songs on it, but it also has some jangly irritating tracks. The 90 minute runtime just isn't justified, this could be cut down to an excellent 40 minute album just by taking out the actually good songs
Some of the greatest songs ever written but this album has too much “stuff” on it. I think it’s a little overrated and needed to be trimmed down. Still love it.
A very patchy album with the second disk marginally better than the first. Some great tracks and some absolute dross. A strong argument against double albums in principle.
swansongs
1968. Back In The U.S.S.R, Blackbird, While My Guitar Gently Weeps
I like The Beatles... but I think this album is a little too long. The singles are good though and I appreciate how many different things they tried. Favorite: Blackbird
My favourite Beatles album is "The Best of the Beatles" (from the ages of 7-11 it actually was because it was the only one we had on tape). I was excited for "The White Album," and the crescendo of "Back in the USSR" followed by the melancholy crush of "Dear Prudence" (my favourite Beatles song) is a hell of a way to open an album and set its tone. But there are some duff tracks here too: "Ob-La-Di" and "Piggies" have dated awfully, and I'm sad to say I found the whole thing more irritating than enjoyable.
Funnily enough, this was the first Beatles record I listened to end-to-end. Doing so again now, it clearly has some amazing tracks like Dear Prudence, Back in the USSR, Revolution 1. But it can also feel pretty indulgent and off the rails despite the amazing production.
Loses a star for being far too long and loses a star for the absolutely horrific ob-la-di, ob-la-da. It was clearly ahead of its time but if I never listen to it again I won't be disappointed.
Eh
Too long!
Signs of the real Beatles in amongst some strange childish noise, not great.
Tried multiple times to like this but don't think the album hangs together
An absolute masterpiece, only a fool would argue otherwise
I like this album more than I used to, I've always been more of a Revolver fan. I still think it's a bit sprawling, but I guess that's the idea, and there are some moments of utter genius in there too
This was a chore for me to get through, to be honest, There are definitely a few good songs to enjoy, but way too many silly or boring ones. For me, Blackbird is by far the best song.
Saved Prior: Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, Blackbird, Birthday Off Rip: Back in the USSR, Dear Prudence, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Martha My Dear, Rocky Raccoon, Helter Skelter Cutting Edge: I'm So Tired, Piggies Overall Notes: There is a 5 star album in here. There's just soooooo much that doesn't need to be here, particularly in the second half of the album, that the album suffers as a whole. To be fair, if any band had ever earned the right to make this album it's the Beatles, and I'm glad that people really like this. But this feels so much more like a collection of outtakes than a cohesive album. That's not a comment on the quality of the songs, as some of these songs are some of my favorite Beatles songs (notably Martha My Dear), but rather that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this album. 3.5 that I'm going to round down because good lord is the second disc tedious to get through.
Eh
Awesome I got this on a Friday. I enjoyed the album
El disco 2 no me vuelve loca la verdad, mi muy favorita while my guitar gently weeps
Solid album, however did not like the "artistic" tracks.
Pretty good album, but it was way too long.

This is absolutely an album everyone has to hear, but it isn't the Beatles at their best. The backstory and drama of the album are better than the album itself. It really should have been an album and then an outtakes album. The album has many good songs that were either ahead of their time or stood the test of time. Hey Jude came out of these sessions, but Rocky raccoon, back in the user, ob la di ob la da, helter skelter, bungalow bill, and while my guitar gently weeps are fantastic. Listening to the album, I hear songs that I forgot existed - Long long long, cry baby cry, and don't pass me by come to mind. Not a perfect album, but their most creative and still above average. I'm glad we have it. 3.5 stars
Some of my fave Beatles songs on this album, some ok, but it's too long, long, long.
Some really good songs but a really unfocused album. If it had half the songs it would have been twice as good
Some killer, lots of filler. There’s a handful of very good tracks on this and a couple of classics but it’s bloated too
fine. fun. not what id listen to normally.
30 songs. Long. Good.
.
Ok, blackbird e skön
Never been the biggest fan of the Beatles, was hoping listening to an album of theirs in full may help to change that. It didn’t. 3/5
"I told you about the walrus and me, man You know we're as close as can be, man Well here's another clue for you all The walrus was Paul." (Glass Onion) "The children asked him if to kill was not a sin Not when he looked so fierce, his mother butted in If looks could kill it would have been us instead of him All the children sing" (Bungalow Bill) Me pasa una cosa con los Beatles que es que no me disgustan, pero escuchar una hora y media de ellos me da TANTÍSIMA PEREZA.
Excellent first 10 or so tracks but the rest of the album left me a little underwhelmed. Bit of bias coming into it I guess as this is often mentioned as one of the best albums of all time. But again, hard to score when it's clearly an album of it's time and was revolutionary.
So we've had Abbey Road, Revolver and White Album. This one I am the most conflicted on - I love while my guitar gently weeps and blackbird then there is a LOT of crap I really dont like. Honeyyyy PIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HONEY PIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
A bit lukewarm on this. The minor, downtempo tracks are the strongest whilst the rest feel overdone. 6/10, I preferred Sgt. Pepper's.
Y me apegaré a ello.
the shorter more rock songs were acc cool. first side was better. so many unnecessary songs?
Easily better than the other Beatles we had
Not my favorite Beatles album
I don't like the Beatles. This did not help my case. I get why Blackbird is the most famous
day 1 — The White Album — The Beatles (1968) genre: rock? 😭 some pop and folky sounding songs too runtime: 93 min rating: 2.5/5 not for me personally but wasn’t a total waste of time fav track: while my guitar gently weeps thoughts: some of these songs do not gotta be here lmfao this is a double album and the first disc was promising but by the second disc i was soo over it man it does have some gems tho overall it ain’t awful i just think it’s one of the weaker albums from this band maybe im being too critical ill give it another listen someday oh shit and blackbird is in this album loll i couldn’t stop thinking abt boss baby
Never been a Beatles fan. This album is a big reason why. 3-4 good songs, lots of garbage and nothing unique. I get that they were innovative, but there were much more creative and innovative music from the same time period.
Too long. Self indulgent. Meh.
Overrated.
Helter Skelter was fun, and Revolution 9 was interesting, but the rest of the album was really boring. It's exactly what I thought Beatles would be. Eh. 2/5 stars.
It’s not my favourite genre, but I appreciate some songs where the guitar is given a lot of time to solo and express its emotions through the notes.
A Beatles fan listening to the White Album beginning to end gives the same energy as a Christian becoming an atheist by reading the Bible front-to-back. A few good tracks but it's mostly white noise or absolute dog water.
I think it says something that I’d only ever heard two songs off this album….
This alone should take The Beatles out of the greatest band discussion. I think the worst part of the age of digital music is we can’t play Revolution 9 backwards on Spotify
Not a big fan of this album. 1. Its long. 2. it has no structure 3. looks like a compilation with no clear message. A couple of nice songs diluted in the bulk. 2.5
