Decent album not my favorite but it’s good
A producer who wasn't scared to say "no" would've cut like 10 tracks off of this. Still great though.
Going 3. I feel like it’s wrong to go lower. But for me this album has some of the greatest songs of all time (Dear Prudence) and some of the most grating on my nerves (the oh bla di thing)
Even The Beatles suffer from "your double album didn't need to be a double album" syndrome. My father is going to disown me.
Sure, there are obviously some iconic great songs on this album. But there’s a lot of fat that could have been cut - it did not need to be this long.
I was eight when this was released. I remember a few of the songs. Mostly, the Beatles passed me by. By the time I reached early teens and my music genes were awake, the beatles were long gone and the likes of Bowie and Bolan were figures of my fixations. Some of the tracks are not so bad, but some are, so I'm going to give it a 3 star. Over long though, and I found myself listening to half a track and skipping.
Decent
Ayyy, another Beatles album. I guess I'm five albums deep into their included discography now. A little scary to think that I will soon be Beatle-less for the remainder of this long, arduous list, though I guess I have other artists to fall back on. I'm hoping that Sgt. Pepper will be the album to cap off their discography. Anyways, the White Album. I didn't like this thing when I first heard it and have held some degree of animosity towards it in the year or so that I've been a Beatles fan (I, famously, have mental breakdowns about album length and double albums). Within the last few weeks, however, I've started to become a bit of a Whitehead, so it's fortuitous that the site has presented this album to me now. I'm looking forward to re-lending a critical ear to this. Yeah, this is pretty good. While the varied genres are impressive on their own, the vocals are what really steal the show for me. I've heard the common criticism that this would be the perfect Beatles album if [insert whatever songs you dislike here] were removed, and I'm inclined to agree. I can definitely see why this album marked the beginning of the end for the band - it's pretty scatterbrained at times. That being said, I do enjoy the ride this album takes me on. "Back in the U.S.S.R." is a great opener, and is easily my favourite opening track from the band ("Drive My Car" and "Lonely Hearts Club Band" are tough competitors, however). McCartney's faux-American vocals come as a bit of a surprise, though they work quite well with the subject matter of the song. The sampling of aeroplane noises gives the track an excellent ambience, and I'm a big fan of the thudding percussion and piano in the background. The variety of the track is what really wins me over, however. I like the break in the middle of the track, and that guitar solo shortly afterwards which drives the track to a solid finish. Great song through-and-through. "Dear Prudence" is an excellent follow-up. The lead guitar riff has a very interesting sound. It's earnest and reserved at the time and I'm a big fan of how the song builds on itself. Lennon's vocals are fantastic - likely my favourite of his. The lyrics are pretty great, too. The innocence lends itself nicely to the aforementioned instrumental. Everyone calls "Back to the Shack" by Weezer gay and cringe for referencing the band's history in a tongue-and-cheek fashion while at the same time praising "Glass Onion" as some work of lyrical genius. Society. Guess I need to know the work rules. This track is one of the slowburns. I've always appreciated the novelty value of this tune, though I've only recently come to value it as a good piece of music on its own. As I've just mentioned, the novelty lyrics are a fun time. I enjoy the drama in Lennon's delivery. The instrumental is surprisingly dynamic. The strings pair quite well with the jittery percussion, and I enjoy how the song comes apart near the end. Above all else, I appreciate the Magical Mystery Tour references. I'm glad that album has made it onto the list in some form - it's absolute bullshit that these nimrod curators couldn't extend an olive branch to the US issue of Mystery Tour. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". It's a classic. Classterpiece right here. This was the only Beatles song I knew for ten sordid years of my life, and it fills that one-song niche pretty well. Very accessible while also showcasing their musical craft pretty effectively. McCartney's vocals are fantastic - a strong contender for my favourite showing of his. The instrumental is equal in quality. The piano and bassy guitar work surprisingly well with one another, and I enjoy how the other instruments work around this pairing - especially that sweet sax during the chorus. Another great tune from start to finish. Truth be told, the album goes out to lunch for a little after this. I'm not sure what the consensus on "Wild Honey Pie" or Bungalow Bill are, but they lose me. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" are well-respected classics, though they don't quite do it for me. Maybe I'll come around to them in time. "Martha My Dear" is a good opener for side two. The instrumental is great - I'm always a sucker for some good strings, and I like the trumpets in the middle of the song. McCartney's vocals are, again, very good. I'm not sure about the specifics of this album, though I feel like they were really giving it their all and experimenting with the vocals and songwriting. It's a regular highlight of the album. "I'm So Tired" is a good follow-up. Always a fan of a little McCartney/Lennon duet, and I like how the song intensifies midway through. "Blackbird" was an early favourite of mine. Can't fault an acoustic interlude, and McCartney's vocals are pretty good. Yeah, I talked about vocals again. We're not even halfway through this album and I'm already a broken record. Bleak. "Don't Pass Me By" is a favourite from Ringo. The chorus is strong, and that violin is pretty great. "Julia" was another early favourite of mine. Very pleasing lyrics, and I like how the song repurposes the general sound of Dear Prudence into a more restful, easygoing song. The pivot towards a more mysterious, pensive sound midway through is the highlight of the song. I'm a big fan of how seamless that transition is. "Me and My Monkey" is a good time. I've always loved that song title, and Lennon's frenzied vocals are paired nicely with the rough, jittery electric guitar. "Revolution" is a good tune. Lennon's vocals are, again, very good, and I like how the acoustic sound is paired with the electric guitar. Truth be told, I prefer the single version, though this rendition isn't half bad. "Cry Baby Cry" is a good late-album track. Some pretty good lyrics, and I especially enjoy that chorus. "Good Night" is an excellent closer. Strings are a slam dunk on any song, though they're especially good at giving me a sense of closure. I quite enjoy how the song deepens overtime, as well as those great backing vocalists. It's a Beatles album. I shant think of consulting the book for why this is in here. This album has a solid critic backing and was an obvious smash hit, though I'd trade this slot for Magical Mystery Tour any day of the week. White is interesting for how individual it feels when compared to the collaboration seen on the band's previous outings, though that comes as somewhat of a detriment with how smashed-together many of these songs feel. Still. For what it is, there's some damn good tunes in here. It got me to write a ludicrous amount of words about this thing, after all.
Liked this when I was younger but I think I just enjoyed The Beatles because I was supposed to. Some tracks I enjoyed on the revisit: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Rocky Raccoon, Helter Skelter. Not an album I would want to listen to every track on but has a mix of styles throughout to make things interesting.
Well, this is it; this is the best Beatles album. I know I'm not saying anything terribly controversial, but as someone who has hated the Beatles for most of my life, finding an album of theirs that I would put on by choice is an astounding turn of events. Most of the tendencies that annoy me about the Beatles are suspiciously missing, or downplayed to the point of forgivability. Event tracks I have disdain for, like "Blackbird," are made listenable in the context of the record. I don't even mind that it's a double album. Being an almost random assortment of songs also benefits The White Album, as concepts often weigh down an album, and this allows them to experimenting a bit more freely (an opportunity they wholly take advantage of), so there really is a little something for everyone here. That said, I am not converted and this doen't mean The White Album is in any 'best of' conversations. Simply put, I find it listenable and more interesting than the rest of their discography. Also kinda neat that 30 tracks pass so quickly.
It's way too long and bar a few good pop songs I'm really underwhelmed.
This was a strange ride. It has some undeniable classics, but it also stuffed with a lot of filler that feels like a collection of experiments. The low points drag on and make the whole album feel disappointing compared to the band's other masterpieces.
It was very long. Some hits, but the length really made it drag on and it made it worse.
It's got some all-time songs, but it's also got a lot of duds. On both sides, there was one song each that really took me out of it. "Wild Honey Pie" and "Honey Pie". Coincidence? I'm not sure. Either way, it felt like they were just trying to throw everything at the wall here to see what stuck. Some of it is still sticking. "While my guitar gently weeps" is such a phenomenal rock song, and it really displays the growth and change that they went through in such a short amount of time. And hot take - ob-la-di, ob-la-da is a good song. There was just too much filler in between all of the hits. They have much better albums in my opinion (sgt peppers is maybe the greatest album of all time)
already listened to it, big beatles fan but not one of my favourite beatles albums. not sure what it is about the mixing but i find it a bit annoying in comparison with their other stuff around this time

3/5, a pretty good album but I do think the number of songs eventually tired me out and I started to struggle not to find it repetitive by the end. But each song individually is amazing, just collectively due to the album length the songs eventually became just a bit overwhelming. But still, a good album.

At first I was like oh boy, a classic album I've never heard and genuinely curious about. I became so weary of the album, imagine my surprise when I discovered I still had 14 tracks to go. There were some good songs on here, but honestly as an outside observer who is pretty neutral about the Beatles, I feel like they were way too high on their own supply at this point. If you cut out the nonsense It could have been an EP.
This album is like a trifecta of some really good, some OK and some pretty rough tracks, and it always leaves you second guessing as to which sweet you're about to pick out from the jar. An ambitious, career defining statement or overindulgent and lacking in quality control? The answer probably lies somewhere in the middle, as does my rating. I'd be quite content for this to have at least half an hour shaved off from it, and I'm unlikely to ever take in the full experience again, but it is an album you should hear before you die, as, well, it's The Beatles.
Has some classic bangers, but the ending just wrecks it, why would you waste everything on 8 minutes of garbage ambient?
The album was long, bloated, and disorganized. There was no real theme or reason for those songs to be together. But I do need to acknowledge, that's why the album exists. I never was a big fan of the Beatles before, but I do want to say some of the songs here were bangin. Loved blackbird and good night. Rest is kind of take it or leave it. 3/5

Boring
Mostly an easy listen but I still can't get all the way into the Beatles. I have been enjoying just how simple some of the songs are and can see how they could just pump out songs/albums since there wasn't THAT much production going on and it was really just the four members.
A real mish mash of ideas. Hit and miss but Dear Prudence, While My Guitar, Blackbird, Julia and Helter Skelter are great. The other version of Revolution is better than the one here though. Rocky Raccoon should be awful, one of Paul's ditties but this time set in the wild west, somehow I love it. Bizarre at it is I like Ringo's closer Good Night too. It has to be said, there's a lot of rubbish here though, and I'd never listen to it end to end.
Disc 1 + Helter Skelter is all I need! If this wasn’t a double album, it’d be an easy 4. Despite some AMAZING tracks (Dear Prudence, Obladi, While My Guitar, I’m So Tired, Blackbird), Side 1 still has some Star-removal-worthy moments (Piggies, Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?). Side 2 is just pretty messy; enough said really. Constant sparks of experimentation and creativity here, but it would be wrong to assume that they aren’t calling upon lot’s of other influences, and at time downright mimicking them.
A mixed bag of a Beatles album but still some seminal tracks from Fab Four. Helter Skelter is about as heavy and it gets, Back In The USSR is a fun Beach Boys send up, some lively ballads like Dear Prudence and Julia and we even get some Harrison songs with My Guitar Gently weeps. No real theme to this record but they could do what they like by their 9th release. 3.5/5
There are some bops to be sure but the best tracks are essentially americana, blues & rock n’ roll studies. Bit long innit.
I mean come on it's the Beatles. Everyone likes the Beatles, you have to. That in mind I don't LOVE them, so a whole album is definitely a bit much.
If you throw enough shit at the wall, some of it sticks. Unfortunately, now your wall is covered in shit. That's this album. I'm offended that we've allowed this to have the cultural cut through that it has. Move "...Gently Weeps" to disk 2, throw disk 1 away. Maybe include Blackbird as a b-side or an album closer. Then you've got a 3.5. There's so much average filler on this, it's obvious the bravado the band had at the time resulted in them just releasing anything they wanted whether it was good or not. As it stands, this is a 2.5 I'm generously rounding up to a 3. Don't @ me

Siouxsie & the Banshees version of Dear Prudence is so good that the Beatles sounds like a cover. I feel like I'm saying this a lot on here, but this album is too long, and it's so clear which stuff is good and which stuff is filler. Overall though it's still good. I preferred Rubber Soul though.

Oof, a double Beatles album just two days after getting the double George Harrison album. I'm kind of Beatled out. But lets push through. This one was kind of all over the place, with a bunch of good songs, and a bunch of bad. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da was a lot of fun. While My Guitar Gently Weeps was a pleasure to hear. Don't Pass Me By was nice. Overall it was still a pretty solid album, and could hit a 4 star rating if it were slimmed down. Best song: While My Guitar Gently Weeps

I'm not a fan of the Beatles, ya they were influential blah blah I know. The music just doesn't do much for me. This album i liked more than most others I've heard, although there are a few real clunkers in there too. Revolution 9 was cool and not what I expect from them, almost made me go 4 stars.
some choice songs (blackbird, USSR) but a lot of abstract filler that didn't engage me
honestly more misses than expected. it's clear why the hits were the hits, though. 'i'm so tired' is a surprise! like it a lot. maybe because i am so tired. blackbird is a masterpiece. i tend to like their slower songs, surprisingly. some of them are darker or weirder than i remember.
Enough material for one really good album. Not enough for a double album.

Lorsqu'on aborde le double album éponyme des Beatles, universellement connu sous le nom d'« Album Blanc », on ne critique pas simplement un disque. On se plonge dans une chronique, un journal intime sonore de la plus grande formation musicale du XXe siècle au moment précis où les premières fissures commençaient à transformer un édifice monolithique en quatre projets solos cohabitant sous le même toit. C'est pour cette raison que l'album, à la fois génial et profondément frustrant, est l'incarnation même du paradoxe : un chef-d'œuvre inégal, un festin gargantuesque où les mets les plus fins sont servis à côté de plats bien moins inspirés. Le meilleur de l'Album Blanc est tout simplement sublime et compte parmi les plus grandes réussites des Fab Four. Comment ne pas être ému par la beauté acoustique et la mélancolie poétique de "Blackbird" de McCartney, une pièce de guitare-voix d'une pureté cristalline ? Comment ne pas être subjugué par "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", la complainte déchirante de George Harrison, magnifiée par le solo de guitare non crédité mais légendaire d'Eric Clapton ? C'est sans doute l'une des plus belles chansons jamais écrites, point culminant de la carrière de son auteur. John Lennon, de son côté, nous livre des fragments de son âme avec une honnêteté brutale. Ces chansons, à elles seules, justifieraient l'existence de l'album. Elles montrent des musiciens au sommet de leur art créatif, explorant des territoires sonores avec une liberté inégalée. On y trouve aussi des pépites rock efficaces comme "Back in the U.S.S.R." ou la douceur intemporelle de "I Will". Cependant, l'album souffre d'un manque criant de filtre. Le producteur George Martin lui-même avait suggéré de condenser le meilleur du matériel pour en faire un seul album exceptionnel. Les Beatles, alors au sommet de leur puissance et désireux d'affirmer leurs individualités, ont refusé. Le résultat est que pour chaque joyau, on trouve une ou deux pistes qui relèvent davantage de l'ébauche, de la plaisanterie de studio ou de l'expérimentation auto-indulgente. "Wild Honey Pie" et "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" sont des esquisses, des fragments qui auraient eu leur place sur une compilation de démos, mais qui cassent le rythme ici. Les tensions internes, la lassitude post-voyage en Inde et l'influence grandissante des partenaires personnels sont palpables. En conclusion, l'Album Blanc est un monument fascinant mais bancal. Il est trop long, trop dispersé et manque de la cohésion magique qui caractérisait "Revolver" ou "Abbey Road". Lui attribuer une note parfaite serait ignorer ses défauts évidents. Cependant, le rejeter serait passer à côté de moments de génie absolu. Car "tout le monde y trouve son compte"... Le fan de rock brut se délectera de "Helter Skelter", l'amateur de ballades acoustiques chérira "Blackbird", l'explorateur sonore analysera "Revolution 9", le mélomane trouvera son bonheur dans la complexité de "Happiness Is a Warm Gun". C'est un album à la carte, un immense buffet où l'on doit soi-même composer son assiette. C'est peut-être cela, sa plus grande force et sa définition la plus juste : un chaos génial, un trésor désordonné qui, près de soixante ans plus tard, continue de fasciner, de diviser et de révéler de nouveaux secrets à chaque écoute. Au final, ce sera un 3/5 pour l'œuvre globale, mais un 5/5 pour les sommets qu'elle contient.

Revolution 9 ist wirklich der schlechteste Beatlessong. Hätte man die besten Songs zu einer Einzelplatte zusammengefasst, wären es mindestens 4 Sterne geworden, so sind es dann doch nur drei, auch wenn es sich illegal anfühlt. 3 1/2.

This album is way too uneven. There are some absolutely brilliant songs on here, but there's a lot of trash as well, with some just-OK stuff peppered throughout. Take the best of these songs and you get a densely packed, 5-star, single album. Taken as it is, though, it's just a mess that averages out to 3 stars.
This remains one of my least-favorite Beatles albums. It feels disjointed, unfinished, almost rushed to release. A lot of good ideas not fleshed out. Throughout listening I am constantly reminded of the rift between Lennon and McCartney during this time, and all the signals towards pointing to the band's breakup, and it bums me out. It's still The Beatles, so the song-writing is phenomenal, but overall the double album is bloated and unrefined. It is iconic and important in the history of music, so I cannot dock it too much. The low rating is due to my enjoyment of the album, not necessarily the general quality. I can understand folks loving this album, but I've never been a big fan in comparison to so many other Beatles masterpieces.

Definitely a lot to like on this one. I'll start with saying that Disc 1 was the far superior album. It was nice to hear an Offspring song as well. Did Revolution 9 bring this from :star::star::star::star: to :star::star::star:? Yes it did.
The story behind this album is fascinating. "The beginning of the end" for the Beatles. This is also a very long album, but with the songs being so diverse, it never really felt boring. But it did drag on a bit. Why was Revolution 9 included as a song in this album? It's just 8 minutes of hearing random noises and "Number 9, Number 9, Number 9, Number 9". After reading a Wiki article on the song, "The composition was influenced by the avant-garde style of Ono..." and that explains that.
Disliked the second part of the album.

Well I've been meaning to get into this for a while now. Faves: While my Guitar gently weeps, Happiness is a warm gun, martha my dear, rocky raccoon, I will, Savoy truffle, Bungalow Bill. Actual score: 3.5 stars. Would I revisit: way too many songs, but yes.
6/10 - It is quite a long album with some bangers (usually the popular songs). It is interesting to me how with the beatles usually the popular songs are actually the best ones I feel like with other artists there is always one banger that is undervalued. Revolution 9 was actually unlistenable
This is a standard The Beatles album; lacks variation but does have a consistent sound. The music doesn't exactly interest me, but each the tracks are well produced, composed and versed. 3/5

Disappointing album from the beatles
This album is so long. Some bangers, a lot of filler. Hot take - Siouxsie & the Banshees' cover of "Dear Prudence" is better. Favorites: Back in the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps Would I listen to it again: Probably not
Interesting mix of styles. E.g. Dear Prudence is half traditional 60s ballad, half psychedelic, drone(sitar) inspired prog rock And self referential too (Glass Onions)! Something unsettling/unhinged abouy this album. Like a subversive parody of pop Rocky Raccoon is a funny parody of country Helter Skelter pretty heavy I like Mother Nature's Son Best track - Blackbird or Mother Natures Son
A bit too much Beatles in one go, for me. I've said it before, I'm not too keen on their songs about quirky characters, or their twee and/or fun numbers. But let me record here my love for While My Guitar Gently Weeps - my favourite Beatles chord progression ever - and my appreciation of Back in the USSR and Blackbird; both excellent. I'm not fussed about the rest, although I'm sure it was all very influential, etc etc.
My dad owned it and then I stole it from him when I was a teenager and then someone stole it from me a long time ago. I’ve still got the lyric sheet from inside. Anyway, Piggies has always terrified me because of the link with Charles Manson. I used to be able to play Michelle on the piano and now I’m wondering if I still can. Some amazing tracks: While my guitar gently weeps and Back in the USSR and some are just unlistenable to: Ob La Di 😳 So…it’s complicated. Hence, three stars.

The record is messy, but in an acceptable way. This album just doesn't feel coherent, because it isn't. There no group effort from the Beatles, which in my eyes makes the record lose its magic. It's not bad, it just not what the Beatles really mean to me, this is just a collection of songs. Favorite song: While my guitar gently weeps. Overall score: 5.0/10

This is probably my least favorite Beatles album (disclaimer: anything before A Hard Day's Night I'm not into so for me it's where they started getting good) and similarly to Sandinista! by The Clash this one is a love-it-or-hate-it album for me. No song has an in-between area for me. Maybe in a few years something will change.

This album is brought to you by drugs. Lots of stand alone hits on this, but taken altogether, it’s disjointed and random. Listen, it’s the Beatles so there’s no duds in their catalog, but I think I’ll stick to listening to isolated songs from this rather than the album as a whole.

Immediately, as soon as I opened 1001albumsgenerator.com and saw this album appear, I thought to myself: "okay easy five stars, right? I mean, it's the Beatles? Abbey Road is, like, a top five album of all time? This has to be good." Am I disappointed? Sure. Did I like it? Yeah. It's not the greatest thing I've ever laid my ears upon, not God's gift to man, and not good enough to make me openly it up at Christmas and not go "shit!" But it's still a Beatles album. The worst Beatles album imo is Let It Be, which is a solid 5/10. This is an 8, probably. I have no complaints about the length. It's interesting to be honest. The thing that moved it down just a tad bit were the songs Don't Pass Me By - Mother Nature's Son. Easily the most boring songs on the album. Revolution 9 is overhated and I kind of love it. Love the Beatles, please don't hurt me <3 I’m gonna go listen to Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge now.
This is fine. "Blackbird" is very good. Better than the other Beatles album this has forced me to listen to. Okay but will not revist this.

The first half is good but there are some songs on the second half which could easily have been left out. Way too long and too much inconsistency between discs (1 is great, 4 is just average at best). overrated
I remember borrowing this CD from my brother and listening to it as a child--that negative association colors most of my interpretation of the Beatles, but I'll give this a real chance. It's fun, and easy to listen to. Much better than the later work, and has some interesting technical tricks (particularly the stereo field guitars!) and thoughtful basslines. In the context of 1968, I can see how this would be massively influential upon many different later genres. AA/BB rhymes fit well, but in many cases I just don't "get" the lyricism, and it's both irritating and intrusive. Whether it is meant to be satirical or serious, I think the record suffers from including both. That being said, some of the compositional flourishes are innovative and impressive, if for or especially for that they're interpolated in a four-chord pop rock skeleton. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" is practically a Skatalites or Specials song, and I like it. I might actually put parts of this on again, but the entire thing is punishingly long at over an hour and a half and definitely loses its charm by the second disc.

It's generally good, but felt very disjointed - it's clearly a case of them being allowed to do... whatever they wanted with little oversight. This definitely has some of my favourite Beatles songs (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Dear Prudence), but there's way too much that's just deeply strange stuff that's not even good as a novelty. I could've sworn Revolution was faster than this? Am I remembering wrong? Also Rev 9 is not nearly as bad as people complain about, after everything else it almost felt like a welcome change! Not my fave Beatles album, not gonna lie, but just okay.

I'm going to start this off by saying I'm not a Beatles fan. That's largely because the fan base is annoying and I don't think a lot of the Beatles fanboys have their own opinions and they just parrot what they think other people want to hear about the Beatles so it puts me off of the band as a whole. I also think John Lennon is irredeemable and listening to him sing about any form of "peace and love" is revolting giving how violent of a person he was in his personal life. That being said, I tried to go into this whole album with an open mind. I do love some Beatles songs, but overall I find their performances of the songs... empty? And there was definitely some of that here. What bothers me about the songs on this album is a lot of them have tempo/rhythm changes within the song which is jarring and unpleasant to listen to. There seems to be little cohesion within the song itself. And I feel that way about the album itself too. Why is the Birthday Song on the same album as Helter Skelter and Dear Prudence? It just feels nonsensical. And it's not done in an interesting way, it just felt like they had lots of different songs left over and threw it on this one. Also, Revolution 9 is one of the worst songs I’ve ever listened to. That being said, the highs are really high. Dear Prudence, Helter Skelter, Blackbird, and Revolution 1 are masterpieces and that can't be overlooked. I’d give this a 3.5 if I could but I’m going with 3. The lack of cohesion and how bad Revolution 9 is pushed a potential 4 down to a 3.
Good album but so much long with 30 songs.
Yeah it’s the fucking Beatles and I love some of these songs but I won’t lie at some point it got so boring that I opened my linkedin and still had the full disc 2 to hear

I had to put down everything and double check it was the Beatles when that heavy rock song came on, for example. 3* for overall experience (4* for innovation and creativeness, the drugs must have been great)
The Beatles are the ultimate "guess you had to be there" band. I'm repeatedly told they're revolutionary, but it just sounds old and weird and boring. This album specifically is supposed to be a masterpiece but it's kind of not. and it's too goddamned long. 3 stars. it doesn't suck, I guess, but it's also not very good. I suspect it's going to have a crazy high score because everyone who was born after 1960 has been gaslighted and bullied into thinking The Beatles are the pinnacle of music.

It was a fun listen but I inly like a handful of songs from both discs, it was another meaty gritty album. 3.5 is what I'd give it coz I'd listen to it if I was doing housework but it's not something I'd sit down and enjoy in it's entirety. I give it props for being the more interesting one since Speakerboxx. Happiness Is A Warm Gun sounds like Matthew mcconaughey idk why. And I dislike both Beyonce blackbird and Beatles. Birthday was super explosive and for it to be followed by Yer Blues is just 🤓🧚♂️🧚♂️

this contains so many of the beatles songs i’ve clowned on before. i really did enjoy sgt pepper’s, but this one just sounds like the result of what it was: a bunch of adult men arguing. some good songs, for sure. while my guitar gently weeps is a certified timeless banger, and i understand why it wowed people. the entirety of the album is not for me and it’s too long. sorry!
I was going to give this four stars, because duh, it’s The Beatles, but damn, the second disc especially is just unnecessary. So it’s gonna be one of those three-star must-listens (I still think it’s a must-listen, #75).

Started to blend together towards the end.
First off, who gave these people a second audio channel? Seriously, they use stereo way too aggressively. Sound stage? Nah, drums left ear, guitar right ear! It adds nothing to the music and is just annoying and distracting. Okay, now to serious stuff. This is my first The Beatles album. Furthermore, I've actually been avoiding listening to them. But why? They're The Beatles. Aren't they one of the biggest bands of all time? Of course, I'm aware of all the praise they get. But whenever I hear someone talk about The Beatles, it is almost always about how "influential" or "monumental" they are and rarely anything about the quality of their music. I'm not trying to downplay the band's impact on the music industry, but this is not what I'm looking for when choosing what music to listen to. Call me a philistine, but I don't care how important a specific song or album was to the history of music or how technically impressive it is—I just want it to sound good. Of course, I've seen praise for their music too, but none of what I had heard or read made me excited to listen to it. That's why I avoided The Beatles—I was afraid that I was not going to like them. I realized that there was a pretty good chance that if I heard their music, I was going to become one of the very few people that don't care for them. And it's not like it's a simple unpopular opinion. Liking The Beatles is like some sort of a default opinion everyone who dares consider themselves a music nerd is simply expected to share. Not praising them is almost seen as flat-out wrong and an attribute of annoying contrarians and attention seekers. And I'm neither... well, at least I hope I am. Look, I hate not sharing probably one of the most popular opinions in music as it will now forever sit at the back of my mind whenever I see people discuss the band and certainly don't want to be the person to go, "The Beatles? Yeah, they're mid," but unfortunately, this is what I got out of my first experience with their stuff. So, does The White Album sound good? Well, yes... but I'm not impressed. Sure, It has a couple of bangers (Back In the U.S.S.R., While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter), but there are 30 songs here and most of the other ones are just decent to good. There's nothing wrong with the music here; I certainly didn't have any trouble getting through the album, but "decent to good" is not something you're supposed to expect from one of the most popular albums from arguably the most revered bands in history. The White Album is good, but it didn't grab my attention and felt like road trip music—pleasant but not exiting. Maybe it was revolutionary at the time of recording, but it's not really an argument. The problem is not that it's old, the problem is that its outdated. There are amazing bands like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Led Zeppelin, and many more that came immediately after The Beatles yet for me their music still feels gripping and fresh many decades later. And yes, it's likely that The Beatles actually influenced the creation of at least some of these bands, but it doesn't make their music any batter. The White Album, on the other hand, by today's standards, feels like simple pop rock with folk elements. Yeah, I'm sorry, I don't get the appeal. My opinion may change when I listen to some of their other albums, but for now that's that. Your mileage may vary. 7/10

Songs I like: Back in the U.S.S.R (interesting lyrics, great guitar and energy) Martha My Dear Rocky Raccoon I Will (it's fine) Songs I don't like: Dear Prudence (boring) Glass Onion (boring) Blackbird (feels patronizing, and is subtle enough that they could say it isn't about race, so what's the point) Piggies (leave the pig-political commentary to Orwell and Pink Floyd) Don't Pass Me By (sounds like a parody of The Beatles) Julia (worse version of Hermione by David Bowie) Birthday (uhhhhh) Songs I love: While My Guitar Gently Weeps (peak) Happiness is A Warm Gun (love the melodies, nonsense lyrics that sound great, satisfying song) I'm So Tired (simple, great) Songs I hate: Obla-do, Obla-da (or however it's spelled) The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill (good to know Paul and John both had the ability to suck a lot) Why Don't We Do It in the Road (you already know) Only half of the songs have all 4 Beatles on it, and you can tell. It sometimes feel like 2 and a half solo albums stuffed into one giant piece. I'm not sure why they gave up on incorporating multiple genres in one song, I generally find that side of them more interesting. I guess the egos and the stories behind the songs all add to the mystique, but they don't exactly add to the music.

Honestly, I never thought super highly of The Beatles prior to doing this project but it really opened my eyes to how good they are especially with The Beatles (The White Album as fans call it). This album had quite a lot more variety with the kind of music being played, more so than any of the other Beatles albums that i have listened to. And for the most part, it paid off with a lot of these songs actually being really solid listens and generally being very memorable. I do feel like this album is pretty long however and i personally think that it would be great if the album was trimmed down a bit. That being said, this is still a really solid album and definitely my favorite Beatles album by far. Best Song: Helter Skelter Worst Song: Revolution 9
It’s got some of my favorite classic hits but is very bloated with mediocre filler. One point should be deducted just for that cheesy Goodnight song at the end. Probably could have been a five star single album with proper editing.

There were a bunch of songs on this album ranging from annoying to good. Most were fine. I will refrain from saying overrated this time but I dunnoooooooooo it's not looking good

Well, this was interesting at least. I'm not a Beatles fan, but at least half of these songs don't sound like The Beatles. It was certainly longer than I wanted it to be, but it's a double-album so I can't really ding it for that. It was all over the place, but I think that was also intentional. So what I'm left with is this: I liked a few songs. I don't think I loved any of them, but it wasn't a slog to get through (other than the overall length and "Revolution 9"). The variety helped me get through it, but also detracted from it as an album. 2.9
Classic album from a classic band that a lot of people have at least heard about. I've listened to it before andit has some really good songs but a lot of them are in a style that I dont really like personally. A lot of the songs feel "samey" and straight up old. The Beatles contribution to music history is great but as something to listen to in 2024 when you haven't grown up with it around you it falls flat.

I got it because I liked 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun', 'Blackbird' and 'Helter Skelter'... and 4 good tracks is enough to get me to buy anything. I also knew 'Ob-La-Di' but didn't want to hold that against them. It's a lot to go through, and I don't really have much time for things like 'Piggies', 'Wild Honey Pie'... even though that latter is less than a minute long. Just leave that off mate. Really enjoyed 'Martha My Dear' and 'Goodnight' on top of the ones I already knew well. Not sure I'd ever really listen to this end to end again.

Familiar with a lot of these tracks already like happiness and ussr. Revolution 9 was an interesting track. I like how the Beatles sound like they’re just having fun, goofin around in the stu. An iconic album for sure glad to have listened all the way through.

Probably the most over rated album of all time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad album, just that it doesn't deserve the hype and praise that it receives. It has some good songs, some mediocre songs, and some crap songs. As an album it's bloated and directionless.
Great listen
Context: I generally like the Beatles, but have never really listened to many albums. Don’t know why, guess I just thought I knew their many hits so was happy with that. So this list I’m sure will rectify the situation. 100 albums in and this is the first one up, and supposedly a classic, which somehow I’ve never listens to before.. Review: Well, to cut a very long double album short, it’s not a classic. Yeah there’s a smattering of great/good songs on here. But it just veers across styles at a great rate with a lot of average tunes. I just found myself listening and wishing the next tune was gonna be a banger, which invariably it wasn’t, so in the end I was just wishing it to end, by which point Revolution no.9 just kicks you in the bollox painfully before rubbing your nose in it by ending on an absolute dud. Seriously, whoever classes this as a great album needs to really needs to listen to it properly without the rose tinted spectacles (I’m Very confident I will prefer other albums). It’s pretty boring, and when George Harrison writes probably the best song on the album I think you have the evidence. I rest my case.
The album is in two discs on Spotify so I'm going to listen to them separately. A-side: fairly good soft rock. I think my expectations were a bit high, given The Beatles reputation. 3.5/5 B-side: Didn't like it as much, Revolution 9 was really cool though, whatever it was. 3/5 Total: 3/5

A few hits but mostly weirdness.
I can see how influential this album was to the genre and time. I might have to listen a few more times to get into it, but it has some good tunes. Long albums take long to digest so I'll need a few more days, maybe weeks. General personal and subjective rating is like a 3 for now, not a lot REALLY CATCHES me but maybe I just need to train my ear to 60ies music..

From Disc 1 I'd say only 'While my Guitar Gently Weeps' is really 4+ stars song, 'Blackbird' is okayish and the rest is mediocre at best. 'Ob-la-Di Ob-la-Da' is exactly what I have in mind when I think of The Beatles: silly songs that make me question the sanity of people around me. 'Helter Skelter' is nice as well, and overall I'd say Disc 2 is more interesting, even though it has some shitty songs in there. The album deserves 2 stars, but I will give it another one because having one song that I like a lot is already quite a feat.
The first half of the album is actually very good and arguably sets the foundation for the next half century's worth of pop and rock music. The second half of the album is very experimental and the quality of the music experiences a steep drop off. Because of that. This album is average at best despite being foundational to many genres of music within modern western civilization
Never been a fan of the beatles sound but this one was ok I guess. Lots of variety in the style of the songs but a bit too polished/poppy for my taste.
What a behemoth of an album with 30 or so songs. There are some Beatles classics here like ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Ada’, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, and ‘Blackbird’ for example, but also some real low points like ‘Piggies’ that felt like some Victorian court jester’s theme. ‘Rocky Racoon’ is a quirky little tale which was quite fun, and ‘Revolution 1’ was a song that I’ve never heard before but I really liked! Other than that it was… pretty bland honestly. And how are you supposed to knock out 30 bangers in an album? I find this pretty hard to rate. Should you credit the album for its highs, or give it a score for the complete experience? I think I’ll have to go with the latter, and since there are so many subpar songs I can’t really stretch any further than 3. It just ain’t that good in my opinion, no matter how well renowned The Beatles are.
to me the weakest beatles album
In amongst the flotsam produced by a band beginning to crash onto the rocks and break apart, a truly stellar album could be found, if the crap was removed and the gems truly allowed to shine for what they are, a shame that it's not as good as it could or should be.
Beatles at their most bloated with their stonermost songs and most deserty mix, yet also incredible lulls and most questionable creative decisions, let's not kid ourselves. Could have been trimmed a bunch and released as two separate albums, as the double-album of it all was wholly unnecessary.
Honestly, it’s the Beatles. I expected to like this more but I found so many of the songs boring or tedious. Maybe it’s just really hard to like entire albums of anyone’s work.

Three songs into this album and I am honestly pretty bored. I do like the peppiness of ob-la-di. I also have loved While My Guitar Gently Weeps for a long time. Much of the instrumentation on this album is irritating to me. Very boppy, but in a grating way. I like more songs on this album than I did on Sgt. Pepper. Revolution 9 is maybe the most horrifying song in existence.
It's much more weird and experimental(almost prog rock) than the vision I had in my head of what the Beatles are (mostly based on the greatest hits). I would agree with Frankie that there isn't alot of genuine emotion in most these songs; but to me some are pleasant or fun to listen to. An exception for me is 'while my guitar gently weeps' which I think is a beautiful song. Happiness is a warm gun also has a satisfying arch/cresendo when it gets to the title stanza for me. It could have been 8 songs IMO. but i like this one more than Sargent pepper.
Some great songs on here but too many filler tracks. In terms of their discography this lands in the middle.

Some great stuff on here, but some guff (Bungalow Bill for one) and it's too long.
There's too much going on here. You can feel the lack of cohesion in the band. There are some incredible songs here but the influence of everyone creeps in one by one resulting in some great, some okay, and some pretty bland songs.
This is like a potluck. George brought a casserole, Paul brought mash potatoes with gravy, John brought a watermelon and Ringo brought nacho cheese doritos. Sure you will probably feel satiated, but these things didn't compliment each other. A couple of the best 5 star songs don't make this a 5 star album.

Number 8 [Belch] Number 8 [Belch] Number 8 [Belch] There are some truly brilliant Beatles tracks here. And some utterly abysmal. Overlong and incohesive as an album - if they hadn't immediately preceded this with Sgt Pepper's, it wouldn't have had the same punch.
This album was like spaghetti at the wall. Some sticks, some not so much. It’s probably my least favorite album of theirs from the second half of their career.

Yes, the Beatles are good, but come on they could have cut some of these songs.
So for me to love an album it has to be somewhat cohesive. Ignoring the fact that this is a Beatles record there are a few songs I like. But there's more messy songs than good songs.
Too Beatles-y
In a nutshell: It’s not their best, and it’s not their worst. This was recorded when the band was fracturing so there’s a lot of material that is “let’s mess around and see what sticks”. That’s the vibe I got anyway. John goes bluesy and avant garde, Paul indulges more in self penned ragtime/vaudville-esque tunes. George truly shines with While My Guitar Gently Weeps* (which is easily one of my top ten favourite Beatles songs of all time) and Ringo does a solid job of closing the album with Good Night. Should it have been a double album? No. I think it could have been a great single LP**. Yet again, we would not have known that The Beatles could still record downright weird and batshit crazy music without LSD. Overall: 6/10 *If you haven’t seen the 2004 R&RHOF live performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, find it immediately. It’s a loving tribute to George on his induction as a solo artist and you get to see Prince shred at the end. **This is my contribution to the “what if The White Album was released as a single record?” argument. With this cut, we get two George songs, Paul’s strongest tracks are there, a “John with Yoko” track is included and we finish with a Ringo song: SIDE A: Back In The USSR, Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, Mother Nature’s Son, I’m So Tired, Blackbird, Julia, I Will. (Side A length: 20:44) SIDE B: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter, Long Long Long, Goodnight. Classic Beatles, but....listening to this again it feels like a bunch a stuff they each were thinking about and working on and then just stuck it all together. No sense of theme or forethought, or even much feeling of collaboration. A time they were starting to head in different directions and were working on stuff separately more, and it feels present in the music.

The seemingly random track order (especially compared to their previous proggy albums) grew on me. Still, a lot of filler. Obla Di Obla Da makes me feel ill, but Revolution 9 is a favourite. Hot take: Yoko Ono is a better artist than John Lennon ever was.

I haven't listened to this album fully in many years. I'm sad to say, for me, it doesn't hold up as well as I remember. There's so much filler nonsense that is a waste of time. The track listing needs significant editing down to maybe 20 tracks which I've heard is a popular exercise with this one. There are some amazing experimental and iconic tracks, but it's self indulgent and just simply too much.
I like the Beatles but I’m not sure I love this album. There are a few iconic songs on it. I love blackbird. I can also see how this album influenced others subsequently.
Some iconic songs that I enjoyed. The Continuing Story Of Buffalo Bill my dad sings to my kids all the time. Not sure I realized it was Beatles song. A lot of songs I could/would just skip. There’s got to be better Beatles albums.
Is ob-la-di subversive? (And who knew it was called that and not Life Goes On?). - Blackbird, gorgeous. - Piggies…anti-capitalist satirical screed? - Revolution 9 feels experimental/trippy - Good Night is beautiful, orchestral lullaby. Kind of boring album though…a lot of songs are dull. Could have been edited down to a regular-length album.

I've deliberated over what rating I should give this album for far longer than I should. I listened to it 3 or 4 times. The most I've listened to it since 2003 when I tried to give The Beatles a chance buying every album post Rubber Soul but just couldn't get with them. I still can't. I love Good Night as a track but it also makes me want to listen to Ekkehard Ehlers - Plays John Cassavetes instead of listening to this album in its entirety. Again.
I guess I expected to enjoy this more seeing as it is The Beatles. Most of it I just didn't seem to connect with, although giving more than one listen is improving my opinion of some songs (in some cases considerably). I could see this album as one I may rate higher in the future once I've listened to it more. Didn't know most of the songs prior to this. My favourite was by far and away While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I don't know what to make of Revolution 9. Savoy Truffle sounded kind of weird in my headphones.
Okay. Enjoyed some parts more than others. Generally mixed feelings.
One of their better albums but I feel there a lot of filler on here to make it a double album. It is not one that I listen to all the way through but there's plenty of songs I listen to frequently.

It’s actually better than I remember, a lot of good songs, a few great songs, some you can’t listen to, Side 4 only got played once, and a bit too long. Always liked Rocky Racoon and Birthday the most. Rev 9 is more noise than song, pure filler. White Album at (3.5*s)

Inconsistent is a good word. For every hit there are probably two pieces of filler that could have been cut; therefore this double LP feels more akin to multiple EPs from individual artists. Mixing is also somewhat primitive. Fat needs trimmed; doesn't even feel like a conventional Beatles album. Low point: "Don't Pass Me By."
There’s lots of good stuff on this but it’s just way too much. And the quirky, odd, silly bits don’t really work for me.
Completely understand the significance, but probably one of my least favourite Beatles albums. This may actually be the first ever 'Data Dump' album, I'd probably cut most of the Lennon songs to be honest. Helter Skelter, Sexy Sadie, Blackbird and Guitar Gently Weeps are all Beatles classics however.

I think this suffers from the weight of over-hype. It’s fine but it’s way longer than it needs to be. You can’t tell me these boys really thought they had 30 unskippable bangers that everyone needed to hear. Cut it to a nice clean dozen and I could see it being four stars.
Not one of my favorite Beatles albums, there are many good songs but too many shippable or just annoying ones.
So long, just impossible to stay engaged without a narrative structure running throughout an album of this length. But, still a classic of course and worth visiting from time to time
Haven't listened to it in its entirety for probably 20 years and I suspect I fall into the 'this is overrated' camp. Some of my favourite Beatles songs are here (Julia, Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter) and I'm a sucker for all the self-referential stuff, but Revolution 9 has to be one of the most pointless and self-indulgent things ever committed to tape. Their sound collage stuff works well as an enhancement to what they are good at (songs!) but doesn't stand up on its own merit - it feels like an overreach. I look forward to listening to this again in 2044.

Listening to this entire album all the way through is a journey for sure. There's a lot of good songs but there's also a lot of bullshit. Altogether its eclectic and lacking quality control (do we really need 30 tracks here, guys?) Some of them are borderline circus piano and I really disliked Bungalow Bill (probably because I feel like I know this person). What did you kill? My ears, ghat. Did I enjoy this? Not really. Does it below on this list? Absolutely, yes.
This album is very schizophrenic. Some absolute classics surrounded by tracks that hardly qualify as songs. 30 songs and 90 minutes was excessive. While it is still essential album for music history, it works have been better served had they trimmed a lot of the fat. I can only imagine how it rocked the world and influenced so much at the time. 60 years later it's still an important album but i don't expect myself to spend extended time with The White Album moving forward. 2.75 stars but gets the bump for to how iconic everything about The Beatles and this specific album are.
I enjoyed many of the individual songs, but found the whole album experience to be very disjointed. I feel like this could have been two cohesive albums, or one cohesive album and a few well-matched EPs.

This album really opened my eyes to the broad range of what are “Beatles songs.” I had heard Back in the USSR and While my Guitar Gently Weeps before listening to this, and I assumed that Back in the USSR was as hard rock-ish as the Beatles could get. I couldn’t be more wrong and this album showed just how broad the band could be. In that sense, this was a fascinating album to listen to. As an album, though, it just doesn’t make sense. There is no cohesion between the 31 songs, and so many of them are downright awful. If this were any other band, the album would be criticized and dismissed; as it is the Beatles - who I believe are good, but very overrated - it gets a pass and is lauded for being all over the place. As someone who is not a huge Beatles fan, I don’t give them a pass for this. The album is decent, but certainly not great, although there are enough good songs on here that they could have had an excellent album if they were capable of getting along when this was released.

As someone not particularly well versed in The Beatles and who really doesn’t have anything particularly smart to add, I’ll just regurgitate the points that the good songs are great, nobodies gonna agree on what the good songs actually are, and that it’d could have done with a good number of the tracks cutting. Honestly, I’m looking forward to other Beatles albums more, so that I can get a better grip on them. I feel like The White Album is not the place yo start. Bit weird in places.
Disjointed, jarring, chaotic, bloated, overrated and influential. There are good songs. Dear Prudence is beautiful. While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Helter Skelter are bangers. The playing is good. However, Obla Di Obla Da is flat out terrible. There's no denying the impact the Beatles had. But just because they were the first doesn't mean they were the best.
Decent album. The good songs are good, but the bad ones are real bad. On a side note: I didn’t know that the Beatles sang the original “dear prudence” I was only familiar with Siouxsie and the Banshees version.

I put on the album thinking it would be an easy 4. It’s the Beatles, I know the album, it’ll be fun, and I would be listening to it while on a road trip with my teenager. And … we’re both underwhelmed. There are a few great songs, like While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Helter Skelter, but as a whole the album is incoherent and tediously long. Sorry everyone who thinks the Beatles are the bees’ knees, but I’ll pass.
Obviously a few great songs. But a lot of it is meh. Editing exists for a reason, this album did not need to be this long.
