Only the best

It's an interesting album, but far too long with too many filler tracks. There are some masterpieces on here, some of my favorites being: Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, I'm so Tired, Blackbird, Julia, Sexy Sadie, and Revolution. There are some extremely weird songs on here though: including Piggies and Rocky Racoon. Overall, this album suffers from having too many songs, many of which are skips.

I've heard this one enough times I could sing it myself. Tedious and self-indulgent. Hasn't aged well, like the band's entire output.

Just a classic, chill rock mood.

Here’s an album I’ve listened to many times. While not my favorite Beatles album, it’s definitely in the top five and it contains some of their best, most mature work. As a major Beatles fan, I know these songs like they were old friends.

A sprawling and eclectic catalog of a band falling apart that I love and Geoff Emerick hates.

Ive probably mentioned this before, but I tried listening to a load of The Beatles as a teen and thought they were rubbish. Admittedly, listening to them in the mid-noughties would have certainly felt different to listening in the 60’s. Since listening again more recently, I’m finding myself loving them. I’m looking forward to this album today. Songs I already knew: Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Helter Skelter Favourites: pretty much all of them Usually, a double album would put me off before even listening due to my fairly poor attention span. However, having lost of The Beatles to listen to doesn’t feel so bad. This album felt a lot more rocky than some other albums where they leaned more into psychedelia. They truly do demonstrate remarkable versatility over the few years that they were a working band.

I like the fact that this double album is all over the place. The quality of the tunes is very high, regardless if we're talking "Blackbird" or "Helter Skelter". This is one of my favorite Beatles records.

I’ve never really gotten the Beatles before. They certainly had good catchy songs but there’s hardly a shortage of them…then I listened to this and I can see why the are held up the highest. I’m only about 50 years too late but I can say that this may be one if the greatest albums ever made. I had to stop adding songs to my regular play playlists for fear that it would just be the whole album taking it over for over an hour (not Piggies though). Martha My Dear, Rocky Racoon, Everybody’s Got Something to Hide…, Helter Skelter the stand outs for me if I had to pick.

I think this is an hour of material that would rank among their best, interspersed by half an hour they would have lost under normal circumstances. By this point they were the band equivalent of sleeping in different beds so it was easier to include everyone's stuff rather than have fights about what would make the cut. John and Paul being in competition with each other and George trying to establish himself as a songwriter means they were all absolutely going for it. I'd take Happiness is a Warm Gun, Blackbird, While my Guitar... as my top picks but I love almost all of it. I skip Revolution 9 and Wild Honey Pie every time though.

A lot of quality songs on this album that i really enjoyed, there is a few weird ones in there. The songs "helter skelter" going straight into "long, long, long" has to be the highlight, really reminds me of the white stripes

Some real classics on this album but it's so bloated by so much other random stuff it makes it a difficult listen.

3.5/5 - Good album for the first 1.5/3 discs/sides, but it's not wall to wall bangers. Revolution 9 is awful though and taints the whole experience.

I think this could have been a 5/5 but it's just too bloated with songs that, in comparison to the really good songs, feel like filler, there just isn't enough good content for a double record. I'm not sure revolution 9 should even be included on any album, sounds like a bad Stockhausen cover. As a result a high 3. Highlights include while my guitar gently weeps, blackbird, helter skelter, ob-la-di, ob-la-da and glass onion.

So much on this album. Love love love some of it. I never really cared for the frivolous silly songs but there is so much brilliant stuff with such diverse influences that this has to be rated well.

It was a really long album since it was a double album. I'm generally not a fan of super long albums especially if it meanders through the songs. There were some standouts but most were forgettable and there was really no consistency which made me think that I was still on the same album. It's a fine listen but nothing crazy. Also didn't listen to it that focused so that may be a factor

My 2nd album of this project and it's one that I've spent a good amount of time with already. Some of the greatest songs of all time are on here and are enough to outshine any tracks that underperform.

Like many of you, I grew up with this album. I always love being reminded of the goofiness and creativity they had in their music that you only really get when listening to their albums in full. When My Guitar Gently Weeps will forever be one of my favorites, and Blackbird will always have a special spot in my mind as the first song I ever learned on guitar. Great job Ringo, keep up the good work! 4.5/5

ngl this was pretty alright, def made me think i should listen to the beatles more but a lot of the tracks didn't hit super hard. Martha and I'm So Tired were some of my favs, most of the rest were pretty good but not amazing imo

Really missing Beatles rock band

So nobody can say this one doesn't have some classic bangers. Like come on... Ob-la-di Ob-la-da. Ob-la-so-fun! That being said, I haven't slept in like three days and listening to this album this morning PISSED ME OFF. Why does it have to be so fucking long? Just because you're the Beatles doesn't mean you get to just jam whatever random shit you want to into an album. There doesn't seem to be nearly as much cohesion as some of their other albums... more like a bunch of random songs put together on this 'Hey! Remember us! We're still The Beatles! Annoying and pretentious. Favorites include: I'm so Tired, Blackbird, and Happiness is a Warm Gun :)

Mixed bag of songs, some of their best some of their worst…

Really good album on the whole, but feels like it's a bit bloated. Could've trimmed down a few songs and had a much better overall experience

This album is ok. I've never really listened to a full Beatles album but I'm familiar with their popular songs. I've never understood the worship around them. I read some reviews that this is one of their weaker albums because it was near the end of the band. If that's the case maybe I will like some of their other albums and start to "get it". As of now its an ok album with a few stand out songs. I don't expect to be doing a full listen again anytime soon. 4 out of 5.

Day 2: This album is a fuckin classic so idk if I'm going to write any down. It's hard to judge the Beatles on anything other than their own merits, because obviously this is better than almost anything else, despite the variance in quality on the record. One of the things that struck me as I listened was that, even though I must be well into the hundreds in terms of number of times I've heard this, you still notice new and enjoyable things in songs. The bass in USSR, the backing vocals on any number of Paul's silly songs. It's just great. Got to feel like Decca would have knocked this down to a single album though. Lovely to have my once-a-decade attempt to listen to Revolution 9 all the way through.

Familiarity: 7/10 Lots of classic songs, but not an album I ever really feel drawn to listen to.

Best and worst Beatles songs all in one

Brilliant and eccentric-the divisions between McCartney and Lennon’s musical visions are apparent, as is Yoko’s influence and Harrison’s growth. An album that takes you on a ride for sure! Not my favorite Beatles album, but does have some of my favorite songs on it.

It doesn’t get better than this

I know it’s a revolutionary (haha) album but it’s not the most listenable thing and has a lot silliness that feels like what a band who can do anything would do. The high points are amazing.

Better than I expected given my general lukewarm feelings toward The Beatles. The first track was my favorite, though a few others stood out as good songs also.

I love The Beatles. I grew up on them, and there are many nostalgic, iconic individual tracks on this album. But it’s so all over the place. It is not a cohesive album. Some songs can even be annoying or repetitive. For example, I got genuinely irritated listening to Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? I don’t know, Paul, why don’t we? 3.5/5

Some great songs, and then there's Revolution 9...

Raw Beatles. Way over my head musically. Beautiful and harsh. I give four stars because I had no idea what most of the songs were about. Maybe I am ignorant. No storyline unless I missed it. Fun to hear them just play together in a band 9/10

A classic album for me. Or maybe three solo albums jumbled up. Lennon is on top form and as a Beatles geek I love the mythology. This album I had on double cd at school - really contributed to my musical taste.

I like it but not my favourite Beatles. But too bloated maybe? And maybe less coherent as a result. The standout tracks are fantastic though- While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Glass Onion, Helter Skelter, Happiness is a Warm Gun. Didn't rate (or understand?) the lyrics on a number of them and the faux USA bits are a bit weird.

this album could have (should have) been 8 songs long and it would have been great. Instead you get artists who have reached the point where they thing every single musical fart they come up with is soooo important and has to be heard by the masses.

-FIRST BEATLES ALBUM -i have listened to the beatles before, but i haven’t listened to any of their albums in full -also this is the first beatles album i have gotten from the random album generator list -great funky start to the album -one of my very favorite songs ever and of the beatles (blackbird) is on this album (im very excited) -lots of these songs feel silly fun which i like -ob la di ob la da was so cute -COOL GUITAR on happiness is a warm gun -god i love blackbird. its SO GOOD! -piggies????????? was that an OINK? -why don’t we do it in the road?? Some wonderful moments

Good album, I like Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Blackbird the most. They're all songs I've heard before and loved, they were the highlights of this album. I also enjoyed Martha My Dear which I hadn't heard before.

Certainly among the most legendary albums, full of classic songs that still sound fantastic more than a half century on. One of the things I was thinking about was the length of this album, 93 minutes, and the fact that it's their only double album. On one hand, like almost any album this length, some things could have been cut to possibly make it stronger. But if that had been the case we probably never would have heard Revolution 9. Would they even have made it to Helter Skelter had they not been stretching out in this way? It's amazing that they produced this much great music in a time so tumultuous within the band.

This might be my favorite Beatles album - warts and all. Raw creativity just flooding out of them. A musical rollercoaster ride of the highest order. All over the place in the best way. Like an exquisite buffet. "Oh I'll try some of that, and some of this, and a couple of those, and what's this???" So much fun to hear them really cut loose and just let it all hang out, even if they were falling apart at the seams in the process. This is the sound of exceptionally talented people with complete creative freedom, going in every direction at once. I'd also like to point out one more thing: sometimes people rip on Paul, hell, even John did, saying his tunes are soft, etc... Dude wrote "Helter Skelter." It's called range.

Probably my favorite Beatles album. Has a ton of range and some songs are basically genre-creating. Sure, there are a few somewhat forgettable tracks but it definitely hits more than it misses. I don't think I really have anything else to add the the general dialogue around this album but... what an album for sure.

Any song that mentions a woman's name is a no. Some decent ones. Back in the U.S.S.R. is a bop, and Helter Skelter is really good. ob-la-di is decent. bigger hits aren't too bad. bungalow bill would be much better without the background vocals.

J'adore. Écouté moins régulièrement que d'autres albums des Beatles, peut-être parce qu'il est plus long, mais c'est à tort, tout est bien de bout en bout (sauf la piste expérimentale à la fin mais bon). Je suis en général plutôt John Lennon, mais mention spéciale à certaines chansons non-Lennon et néanmoins fabuleuses sur ce double album : While my guitar gently weeps, Blackbird, Helter Skelter. Un 5/5 sans réfléchir, comme probablement les autres albums des Beatles à suivre.

Cat: it’s the Beatles White Album. I think you start with perfection and talk your way back, which is really hard to do. Beautiful songs. Rock and roll songs. Fun songs. Love songs. There are other albums I say I like more, but this has everything.

Half these tracks are great, some of my favorite Beatles songs (Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, Back in the USSR) and the other half are mediocre at best and obnoxious at worst. I guess that kind of speaks to what was going on with the band at the time. Does it work as an album? Not for me. A 45 minute cut of this would be much better imho. Maybe you had to be there

Ive never been a huge Beatles fan. I recognize their impact on music, I just never got on that train. Some of the tracks are fantastic, and some are just silly nonsense. Wild Honey Pie, Bungalow Bill, Piggies, Ricky Racoon? Hope this classic gets better.

the beatles had such a strong "losing my mind from acid" vibe at this point in their career that really doesn't sit well with me on this album. I like it on Magical Mystery tour but on this one I feel like I'm being held hostage and fed tabs by Charles Manson's cult. But also it's got shit like while my guitar gently weeps and influential asf stuff so liek it's still a good album just weak for the beatles imo

Hard to argue with The Beatles...great album, lots of songs. All of them are a pleasure to listen to. Forgot how much I enjoyed listening to the Beatles.

A Classic.

it's always odd listening to a full Beatles album. There's always some absolute classics that you've known and loved for your entire life ; a few new ones that you've not heard and can be pretty good ; and then a complete load of filler / tosh - which is what you get when you release 2 albums a year I suppose. The White Album is no different - there's an incredible 12-track album in there somewhere, that would be an instant 5/5 if they'd applied some quality control / editing ; but this 30-track double album has just got too many tracks that have me reaching for the skip button

Not my favorite Beatles album, but it still has some absolute gems on it.

I love The Beatles, but this definitely isn't their best work. A ton of bangers, but then a lot of songs that would have been better left on the cutting floor or in some 'extended cuts' album after they broke up.

This is the Beatles' passage to India, popularizing the West's flirtation with the East and all things "exotic". Their spiritual guide in all this? Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who blew their English minds by telling them that “heaven is like electricity—you don’t see it; it is within you”. Such "wisdom" hooked the Fab Four, and they followed the maharishi to northern India, believing that this form of spiritualism offered real answers through meditation, relaxation, and peace after years of fame, fortune, and publicity. Let's just ignore the total irony of this situation--the fact that Lennon was always anti-religious. Could this respite in rural India help the Beatles rise above their worldly concerns and viewpoints? And can this actually be called a respite, since reporters and photographers followed them to the compound? The mere presence of the Beatles in India was enough to popularize Eastern spiritualism in the 1960s West. (Of course, after a few days of nothing happening, the reporters, in boredom, left.) This trip was pretty much inevitable, since it was nothing more than an extension of the drug experience. People were looking for euphoria, looking for god-figures in everything. Harrison actually took it seriously and grew quite devout through meditation. Devoted to what, though? The quiet Beatle wasn't giving away his secrets. Though Lennon, too, tried taking his seclusion seriously, he had trouble concentrating, what with the troubles in his marriage and the fact that Yoko kept sending him letters, with little poems like "I'm a cloud, look for me". Lennon was quickly smitten. McCartney and Starr weren't as keen as their two bandmates on the whole spiritual enlightenment thing, and besides, there was still music to make. Lennon and McCartney learned to fingerpick their acoustic guitars, the former writing "Julia" (a goodbye to his mother and hello to Yoko) and "Dear Prudence", the latter writing "Blackbird". Actually, most of the songs for The White Album and Abbey Road were written during their stay in India. It didn't take long for problems to arise, however. The maharishi started using the Beatles' name to promote himself through spoken-word albums, and he even had the stones to ask the band for 25% of their earnings. Add a bit of sexual predation of the female devotees and the maharishi found himself the subject of an absolute character destruction in the form of "Sexy Sadie". The album itself---hmmm, well the criticism that the double album has too much filler is a valid complaint. Many of the songs are substandard for the band, but I just don't think they cared. They didn't have to prove themselves anymore, and they were working more and more apart all the time. When they were in the studio, Yoko was always there, always interrupting sessions, not happy to just sit in the recording booth, and started giving her opinions as if she was a creative participant in the band. She "helped" Lennon with his songs, and then, as Harrison famously noted, "the rot set in". After India, the Beatles grew ever more insular, wanting to work alone, keeping to themselves, valuing their privacy above any public considerations. Lennon and McCartney continued recording while Harrison & Starr went to America, and Lennon was working on "Revolution 9" alone. McCartney was perfecting "Blackbird" alone. And then Lennon & Harrison completed "Revolution 9" while McCartney was in America. The dynamic of the band was being redefined (falling apart?). "Revolution 9" is the band's most unpopular track ever. McCartney and Starr were straight up pissed off about it, but Lennon's thoughts on it were that this was the music of the future, music without the necessity of instruments. As far as sound experimentation goes, however, this track is definitely the most relevant and enduring. It was influenced by two main sources, the first being social disturbances in England, the second being Yoko herself. Her art show displayed a new type of avant-garde, and Lennon, listening to her spoken word art, wanted to try something new. Naturally, Yoko helped make decisions on which tape loops to use. So what the hell is actually inside "Revolution 9"? About 100 fragments of classical music, opera, Lennon's voice, Yoko's voice, Harrison's voice, applause, gunfire, choir music, football fans, and of course a man saying "number nine". Lennon thought 9 was significant, it being not only in his address but also his birthday. Derp. "Revolution 1" grew out of a jam session of "Revolution 9", wherein all kinds of weird ideas were fielded, like how random sounds can be used to make music, like how fun it would be to sample sound bytes from other previously-recorded sources. "Helter Skelter" was McCartney's response to a criticism saying he was capable of writing only soft ballads, so he tried to create as loud and dirty a sound as he could. I've read critics who maintain this is the first "heavy metal" song. Bollocks! It's an infamous song, though, considering how Charles Manson chose to interpret a song about a carnival ride, a song about the rise and fall of an empire. America's most notorious mass murderer believed "Helter Skelter" contained prophecies about a coming race war between blacks and whites. Other notable tracks (for me) include "Mother Nature’s Son" (inspired by a maharishi lecture), "Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey" (John thought the other Beatles were paranoid about Yoko), "Honey Pie" (an homage to British music-hall style), "Savoy Truffle" (Harrison sniping Clapton for his love of sweets), and "Cry Baby Cry" (where George Martin plays harmonium).

Some gems, some junk. The experimentation is cool but hardly worth replaying.

I was prepared to be more critical. I don't consider myself big on the Beatles, despite enjoying Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's, and Rubber Soul (I've been thinking of taking a deep dive of their discography for a while to fill out the gaps). When I first heard the White Album years ago, it more or less glazed over me. I thought it was intriguing but was ultimately messy, overblown nonsense. This time, I gave it more of a chance, listened more intently, and found I was beginning to get sucked in and really enjoyed all of it. And not because I felt I was supposed to but legitimately found something worthwhile. It IS a weird and broken mess, but it's also oddly appealing and beautiful in a certain way. Even the goofy Yellow Submarine like stuff has a charm to it. A fun thing I noticed, too was how much of this must have been influential on Bowie, Zeppelin, Jeff Tweedy, Kiss, Elliot Easton, and probably Alex Lifeson. Maybe I am a bigger Beatles fan than I thought or I've grown to appreciate this for what it is: A broken, bleeding collection of songs birthed from exhaustion and inner turmoil. I wonder if this album was helped or hindered by the fact that all the band members at this point were going through serious issues. With this in mind, it is really quite tragic. 4.5

Amazing how diverse the songs are stylistically. Helter Skelter is probably the best smelling salt that the Beatles put out.

Didn’t love it all, but loved most of it. The great songs on here are truly great. Blackbird is an all-timer

What an album. After 11 months without a major release and a whopping 18 months since their last full album, the Beatles are showing off that they are producing so much material they can randomly do a double album instead of single. That being said, to flesh out all the way to a double album there is some definite filler in here (not much but it's there). Knowing all the other material they were working on that would find spots on later albums and even their solo careers, I don't know why they decided to put tracks like Wild Honey Pie on here. But of course being the Beatles even the filler kind of serves to highlight the surrounding songs when listened to in proper album context. Despite how much I love this album, it contains the one part of the Beatles discography that I always skip: I always end this album two tracks early. Revolution 9 is just too experimental and garbagey to listen to more than about once a year, and Good Night sucks so I just end the album instead of skipping. The album was recorded with the four Beatles working separately on a lot of it as they went through a period of internal strife. For the most part you can tell the songs where they worked separately as they have a single Beatle's instrument or singing super highlighted with little harmony. At this point in their career John and Paul were producing so much high quality stuff that the music transcends whatever internal conflict they had and comes out as yet another set of fantastic tracks. This is also the first album where George has one of the most famous contributions to the album in While My Guitar Gently Weeps. This is the time where his writing production skyrocketed in both number and quality, which shows over the rest of the Beatles' career and into his solo act. Ringo also contributes a composition in Don't Pass Me By, which is forgettable. What an opening. That jet fade in for Back in the USSR, crossfade to Dear Prudence's flowing guitar arpeggios, to Glass Onion is three great rock tracks to get you in the mood. As you move through the rest of the album you're greeted with the typical Beatles fare: great chord progressions, great melodies, great instrumentation, great album pacing, a variety of styles, and of course sprinkled in are a number of all-time classics. It's not hard to forgive the album of Good Night, Revolution 9, Wild Honey Pie, and Don't Pass Me By when they are counterbalanced by Back in the USSR, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, I Will, Mother Nature's Son, Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter, Revolution 1 and Cry Baby Cry. Random tidbits: -Helter Skelter is considered to be a major influence in the development of early heavy metal. -Yoko Ono's line in Bungalow Bill is the only female lead line in the Beatles catalogue. -Eric Clapton plays lead guitar on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. -Blackbird is played by every person who has ever owned an acoustic guitar but somehow everyone stills likes hearing it anyways. -Everybody's Got Something to Hide is one of the only songs where I have never been able to properly sync up my mental beat counter with the song before the rest of the instruments come in. I have tried so hard. -Revolution 1 is amazing but Revolution is still better. I'm beginning to think these Beatles characters were pretty talented. Fun game: create your personal single disc version of the white album. Limit it to 23 minutes on each side of the LP, and order the tracks so both sides flow well. It's so hard.

The Harrison songs + Helter Skelter are very good, but the rest of the album is bland, vanilla filler. If it was trimmed down to about 7 or 8 songs it would be a decent album, but as it is it's far too bloated.

This is everything that I expected it to be: overlong, bloated, confused, odd, bizarre, experimental, interesting (in places), frustrating and with some absolute classic bangers. You can absolutely hear the egos fighting for control as the band spirals into the death throes. There are some tracks I really enjoyed on here - and starting with Back in the USSR is genius. Then I reckon you could get most of a decent album out of this if you just took the tunes that make a real impact. And most of the rest just isn't very good I'm afraid. As an album it's pretty shite. Take those 30 minutes worth of gold and add a couple of fillers and you've got an album worth listening to time and thime again (and I'll take the Siouxsie version of Dear Prudence as well fwiw).

Classic Beatles

An interesting and incoherent look into what the Beatles would mostly become in their solo work. Most notably, Paul did not go on to continue making Heavy Metal music.

I didn't think I would actually rate this one so high after a road trip listen, but I guess all it took was a second try, a pair of headphones, and a couple glasses of chocolate liqueur. After listening in the car with my parents yesterday (including my dad who is a Beatles superfan) I was pretty unimpressed, save for the standouts of "Blackbird," "Piggies," and "Mother Nature's Son." There were very few songs that I disliked, but it just felt like a lot of filler. My mom had a rather impassioned review, saying "all these years, I've questioned why everyone loved the Beatles except me and have asked myself 'what's wrong with me?' After this, I'm asking 'what's wrong with them!?'" I was ready to give it a 3 after yesterday for the standouts alone but gave it another attempt today. While those are still by far my three favorites, I found myself smiling along to the goofy lyrics and musical diversity, especially on disk 1. Songs that I thought I disliked, like "Ob-La-Di..." and "Rocky Raccoon" were actually really enjoyable. And of course, that doesn't speak for the great songs like "Dear Prudence" and "Back in the USSR." I'm still not fully convinced to be a Beatles fan, and it may not be my favorite album, but there's definitely something special here.

Even as a massive Beatles fan I’ve never been especially attached to the White Album. I still liked it a lot, but in my mind it couldn’t hold a candle to the Beatles’ “true masterpieces” like Revolver or Abbey Road. My thinking was always influenced by the infamously fraught recording process, where a chaotic and disjointed set of sessions resulted in a pretty chaotic and disjointed album. I guess for me this album represented the beginning of the end for my favorite band, so it was hard to have too much affection for it. All that being said, I’ve rarely done full listens of the White Album, and actually doing one for the first time in a long time helped me realize how much this album teems with creativity. The Beatles try any genre, any style, throw em all at the wall and see what sticks, and they all come out a bit of fun at the worst and masterful at the best. They might be tired and annoyed at each other, but they’re also utterly unserious and having fun at flower power culture’s expense, from tearing down their own mythos in Glass Onion to dismissing the hippies' all-bark-no-bite politics in Revolution 1. And of course John, Paul, and George are all pretty close to the top of their game as writers. When the first side alone features Back in the USSR and Dear Prudence and While My Guitar Gently Weeps, they all could have gone home and celebrated a hard day's work (night?) in my book. Could this album still have been improved by cutting the obvious chaff like “Wild Honey Pie” and “Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" Yes. Is it still chaotic, disjointed, and overlong? Yes. None of that takes away from its magic and beauty. It is, warts and all, the Beatles. Best song: Blackbird

So fucking essential. And influential. An argument can be made that it has elements from every single album on this list, even the albums with a 1 rating. One could also argue that it's essentially four solo albums, but better than any of the "official" solo albums each member would release in later years. It's the sound of the Beatles breaking up, while also serving as a breakthrough for George Harrison, who finally decided to put down the sitar and find his guitar. A double album that somehow didn't have room for either "Hey Jude" or the fast version of "Revolution". I'm not sure what it says about me that I like all of John's songs. It probably makes me a candidate for scream therapy. Even the "filler songs" have aged well, although, in the interest of full disclosure, I decided to listen to the 2018 Mix this time (having already listened to the album repeatedly for 50 years), and extra time spent polishing those songs might have helped. I used to insist that cutting this album in half and eliminating the "filler" would make this the Fab's best album. The bulk of my time with this album was back when it was released on compact disc. I'd wear out Disc 1 while rarely spending any time with Disc 2. This was famously the first album The Beatles recorded after the death of their longtime manager Brian Epstein, meaning these fellas no longer had anyone around to tell them "No". The Beatles wanted to make a double album, so they made a double album. So go ahead and keep the filler. Don't skip over Revolution 9 or Piggies. As Paul says, it's the freaking White Album. By The Beatles. And it's possibly their best album.

Undeniably a classic album. To be completely honest, didn't love it. Feels not cohesive, apart from the well known songs, i didn't enjoy it so much i fear. Wouldn't re-listen to all of it for fun. Sorry guys.

This is an easy 5 for me. Often a double album is stuffed with filler. Not here. There are so many great tunes with incredible songwriting. It seems a miracle that it was achieved.

5/5 I'm having a hard time being partial about this album because it was one of the few physical items my biological father left me so, I have a emotional connection to it. Yes, it does that psychedelic, funky, artistic, experimental de-evolution that many albums of this era did (breaking ground for other people). However, before it goes south, it has so many beautiful love songs, and insane songs about having sex in the road and fun to sing ballads about ordinary people and messages about revolution. Were they starting to get full of themselves and a little too Frank-Zappa-Meta? Sure, but the social commentary mixed with the animal themes, the average Joe take and the rock and roll, just does it for me.

The first Beatles album I ever really WANTED to like, and I didn't. Too long, too all over the place and a little juvenile for my tastes. I WILL revisit but maybe just the best stuff that are hand picked for me.

Wow. 30 tracks, and SO much creativity and variety. How could I not give this 5 stars? Too many brilliant moments to list. Turns out The Beatles were pretty good!

Love the Beatles, love this album

I mean, it's the white album!

I'm a young Beatles fan and I've been avoiding this album for years. It's a double album with masterpieces such as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Blackbird" cramped together with goofy songs like "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da" and meme songs such as "Revolution 9" and "Wild Honey Pie". It's a bit intimidating to dive into the world of Beatles at their wildest and most experimental. After listening to Pink Floyd's "Ummagumma", their most experimental album, I reckon listening to such adventures need a bit of energy to do so. Today, however, this album blew my mind, as many Beatles albums usually do. Side-A is an absolute masterpiece. I didn't even care about "Wild Honey Pie", all of them are bangers in their own unique ways. Side-B is a bit more challenging to listen to. It has more aggressive and heavier songs like "Helter Skelter" and the one of the many amazing gems I've just discovered, "Yer Blues". "Revolution 9" is not that bad imo, it's a nice albeit poorly executed sound collage about human history. Overall, I can see why this is many Beatles listeners' favorite. It's a glorious mess of many styles and moods. It's an adventure to listen to. I've always thought that they like it only because it's "experimental" or has "many styles". But it turns out it's an absolute banger of an album.

If Sgt. Pepper was an amazing night out of drinking, drugs, & late night conversations, The White Album is that night's hangover. Cynical, darker, and at times, random, the White Album bends and blends genres. After each song, it turns each corner to a different one. In the span of a few songs, you'll hit a blues song, an acoustic ballad, a cynical rock track and then a happy-go-lucky reggae inspired tune. Most of the orchestra instruments and complicated songscapes have been ditched for more traditional "rock n roll" arrangements. When they do appear, its much more subdued and limited. In order to really appreciate this album, you'll really need to listen to Sgt. Pepper and then get here. All the nonsense make more sense sonically and lyrically.

Here's one we definitely don't need to question if its inclusion on this list is justified. The whole thing is definitely on the long side, but it never gets too old, through the sheer variety between tracks, all of them executed quite well within their style. This also gives the impression that there isn't much chaff or filler here / just different tastes. The only tracks I would cut out of all 30 are the last two. Great album.

The great songs on here on about as great as it gets for pop-ish structured tracks. There are some weird things thrown in there - avant garden one-upmanship I guess. But the good vastly outweighs the bad and it's not hard to give this a 5 star rating. There is some merit to the argument that this is an example of why artists shouldn't do double records. I think the best true double album release I can think of was Mellon Collie (which BTW would def be on my list), but the thing it does really well is kind of stick to the album aesthetic even when the songs are truly incredible The White Album doesn’t have much of an ‘aesthetic’ Personally I dig the ‘avant garde’ additions but they’re pretty annoying for full front-to-back listens when you just want to hear the ‘real’ songs Comparing to a similar double album my listening group just had recently Tusk by Fleetwood Mac (which I realize no one really liked except me haha) I think it’s a similar process leading to a similar result. Both bands were very fragmented socially during the recording and the effects of ego and drugs were apparent. John McVie (the ‘Mac’ from Fleetwood Mac) was quoted something like Tusk “sounds like 3 records recorded by 3 solo artists” and I kind of feel the same way about The White Album

Come on now. I gotta do the white album? It's such an important album for music as a whole. Like damn. It's got history. It's got bops. It's infinitely interesting. What else would anyone want? And it's not cause I'm "supposed" to like it. The Beatles in general have always been a part of my life. It's some of the first music I remember hearing and loving. Thanks family for that one. Even as someone who's not a fan of hour and a half long albums or the Beatles, this was actually like really good, easily the best Beatles record I've heard to date.

Thirty songs for an album. I mean, come on. There are a few good songs on here, and the influence of the Beatles on other musicians is undeniable. But as an album, self-contained thing to listen to - yeah, no. Too many stupid songs (I don't care about a fucking raccoon), and too bloated and self-important. Two stars.

While this is a well-regarded Beatles album, it doesn't rate as highly for me as their other late-period albums (Rubber Soul through Let It Be). There are so many great songs, yet the album's overall feel is a bit of a miss-mash and has some definite skips. I think basically all of the Beatles albums deserve to be on this list (they had such a huge cultural impact that it seems shortsighted to skip any of their records), but I'm much more likely to reach for Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Not the best Beatles album IMO, there are a few good cuts but it jumps around a bit and no real coherence as an album.

Probably a little overrated but still a great pop rock album. They cover a lot of ground here including the experimental Revolution 9 and heavier Helter Skelter. There are also some absolute classics here such as While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The main problem is the sheer number of songs. Because the tracks are shorter there are 30 songs on here so it’s really hard to keep track. There’s also bound to be weaker songs which there certainly is. I get the filler is on purpose but it still doesn’t excuse their quality. Overall this was still a great album and worth seeking out the better songs here.

Tough one to review. I get what the band was going for here. Take the attention off THE BEATLES as an entity, defy expectations and expand creative muscle, and write songs in a bunch of different genres and styles. And there is a lot of great stuff here. But like most double albums, it is overstuffed. Some of it is not all that pleasing to listen to, even though it fits the concept. Some may just call that challenging, and that's valid. I just don't have the patience for an hour-and-a-half challenge that I would for a 40-minute challenge. That being said, when the Beatles do it, it's still better than the average band, which skews the scale.

Shocked it took me this long to get to a Beatles album. I've listened to the White Album a time or two before, but mostly I've repeatedly listened to the standouts. While the highs are undoubtedly high, there are some real lows and songs that drag down this from a stellar rating. Love how varied it is, but it is uneven. 4/5

The common critique that the White Album receives is that it is too bloated and should have been cut down. I disagree. What we see here is a period of unfettered creation that signifies the beginning of the end. This is an album of competing personalities writing wildly different material under the singular name of the Beatles. It works though, partly because we know the story of how tumultuous 1968 was for them. The tumult gets its greatest expression in the penultimate track, Revolution 9, a nine minute amalgamation of unsettlingly arranged studio chatter and snippets of music. It is generally reviled due to its oppressive atmosphere and its perceived lack of justification. However, unpleasant as it is to listen to, I think it's necessary. This is a postmodern album; it eschews convention purposefully and destabilizes the notion of genre and the concept of a unified album. Revolution 9 literally carves up and repackages studio sounds into something unrecognizable before falling into the dreamy 'Good Night' with its classic Hollywood style string arrangement. White Album: I think I agree with Liz now about double albums. Just too much Beatles here and it feels like there is some filler. They should have cut some of this. I could’ve done without the 8 minutes of Revolution 9. I probably could do without Wild Honey Pie, Don’t Pass Me By, Piggies, Why don’t we do it in the road, Helter Skelter, bungalow, bill Weird that they wouldn’t include Hey Jude. Wikipedia said they had demos for Jealous Guy and Junk? It’s a great album but It could’ve been a much tighter/ stronger album. It doesn’t flow the way sgt peppers or Abbey Road do. Still a 5 though- it includes so many great songs: Blackbird, Mother Nature’s Son, Happiness is a warm gun, Dear Prudence, Julia, While my guitar gently weeps, Martha my Dear, I’m so tired.. I really like Lennon’s singing. I appreciate the experimentation and the punkness of the record.

This Beatles album is not iconic like Sgt. Pepper or Abbey Road, but it's pretty damn good. The tracks are not as coherent - a concept album this is not; in fact, the song selection is very eclectic. Still, The Beatles were on the peak of their songwrighting here, and their driving force was undoubtedly Paul McCartney. Some of his songs are very self-indulging, even outright silly (Wild Honey Pie, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, Rocky Raccoon), and for all the creativity, the band might have been wise to self-edit and trim the 1:33 h running time a little bit. But really, in the face of the quality of most of these songs, this is just nitpicking. Back in the U.S.S.R., Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Blackbird and Helter Skelter alone would make for an absolutely classic of an album. And this is only a small selection of the songs penned by McCartney. But even if John Lennon took a bit of a backseat as a member of the Beatles during this time, he was no slouch when it came to songwrighting. He provided a much needed counterpoint to McCartney's style of writing, providing both more experimentation and more moody and edgy songs. Glass Onion, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, I'm So Tired, Julia, Revolution 1 and Revolution 9 are all a case in point. George Harrison, meanwhile, was coming into his hown as a songwrighter. His output was not as high as that of Lennon or McCartney, but he made that up with quality. Piggies is a fascinating track with harpsichord and the backing of a chamber orchestra. But While My Guitar Gently Weeps is an absolute monster of a song with Eric Clapton on lead guitar, which can rightly be called one of the best tracks the Beatles have ever recorded. And then there is Ringo Starr, the Beatles' legendary drummer, who was always a little bit overshadowed by his bandmates when it came to penning songs. Here, he provides the equally strange and charming Don't Pass Me By, and especially the gorgeous Good Night, the album's closing track. Having all these remarkable, classic tracks (among others of varying quality) on a single collection makes for an instant classic album. I'll deduct half a point for the lack of trimming, but this album is one of the (clearly less than 1001) albums that really deserves to be on this list and to be listened to by everyone. 4.5/5

Err mer gurd! What a banger! The track list is something to marvel at, even without listening. It has a bunch of my favourites.

Ok ok. If this was distilled down to 14 tracks, it would be perhaps the greatest album ever. As it stands it's just in the top 10. Plus we get 14 extra pretty kooky Beatles tracks. So good decision to go for the double.

Many complaints over the years have centered on the length of this album, but ignore them -- each of these songs are fantastic in their own way (yes, even "Revolution 9"), each set a template for entire branches of rock music, and each has their time and place. Some albums are summer albums; some are winter albums. The White Album says, how about something for every season? And what's more, it delivers. Unpopular opinion. There are great things on here. There are not great things on here. It's a hodge hodge. Still, it's a technical marvel, and one more example of how we live in a post-Beatles world.

Great but long

An amazing album - after Sgt Pepper they wanted to get back to their real style of music - however the mix of Pepper like sounds, blues, romantic melodies and strange words (Ob-La-Di …. etc.) seems like a reverse retrospect - bottom line: I enjoyed this album when it was released and enjoyed re-listening today! Glass Onion !!!

Good but i little bit long

Yay, more Beatles! I don't think I've actually ever listened to this one all the way through in one sitting, so that was nice. There's a few songs on here I'm not really crazy about, but given that it's so long, I'll give it a pass. I've also never listened to Revolution 9 all the way through before now, so that was something. There's a lot of really good stuff on here. I'm a sucker for the more acoustic stuff. It's a pretty obvious 5 for me. My favourite song was Revolution 9. Just kidding, I'm not insane. My favourite songs were Mother Nature's Son, Honey Pie, and Don't Pass Me By.

It's always a fantastic journey to listen to this album in its entirety. It's a very cohesive album despite it a double one and it being very diverse stylistically (rock, pop, proto-heavy metal, blues, avantgard etc). The White Album has the best songs of Lennon, a lot of great McCartney tunes, Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps, among others, and Ringo's first song he wrote for the band. Even Revolution 9 is an interesting piece of music concréte, an atmospheric college of sounds. The Beatles once again showed what geniuses they were.

The White Album sits below Sgt Pepper and Rubber Soul for me. It's well put together, a bit too twee in places but that's them, and a few really good songs. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is always an incredible track but there's not enough here to get a 4/5, it's a 3.

As I expected, not as good as Nico. There's a really good album somewhere in here, but it's probably around 45 minutes long rather than an hour and a half. I'd can all the tracks that sound like kids songs on it (Bungalow Bill and Rocky Raccoon at the very least), as well as the weird sounding experiments that don't work (Wild Honey Pie and Piggies the worst examples, Revolution 9 has something to it but not enough...). Ob-La-Di is a bit too janky and twee for me (as are many of the Beatles hits). But, when it does hit, it's amazing - Helter Skelter is my favourite Beatles song by quite some way, While My Guitar Gently Weeps is also a stone cold classic. The album also showcases their range: you've got pure ballads, experimental stuff, proper pop, and a couple of songs that if they were a decade later you'd call punk. That merits a 4, not as high a 4 as Nico got, but a 4 nonetheless.

Not a great album in the sense of having consistently great songs, especially in the way some seventies double albums would. However, there is a loveable, freewheeling energy on this record that brilliantly captures the skills of each member and somehow makes it work greatly as a cohesive piece.

On selvää, että Beatles ei ole ihan 100-prosenttisesti Minun Juttuni, mutta jos en anna tälle levylle neljää tähteä, niin mille sitten? Ihan oikeasti, tästä voisi koostaa kokonaisuuden, jonka keskiössä olisivat esim. Back in the U.S.S.R., While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is a Warm Gun, Helter Skelter, Revolution 1... Kun tähän lisää pari vähän vähemmän nerokasta onnistumista, esim. Glass Onion, Dear Prudence, Julia jne., on jo melkein viiden tähden lista kasassa. Ehkä minun ei pitäisi olla näin yllättynyt, mutta olenpahan kuitenkin.

Not the best Beatles, but an easy 5 none the less. The were so far ahead of everyone at the time.

It’s a good album but I didn’t feel like it had a lot of continuity throughout… besides them just singing about nonsense… also Revolution 9 should be deemed cruel and unusual punishment

Ik heb blaren op m'n vingers!! Misschien wel meer dan ooit zijn de Beatles op dit album het muzikale equivalent van Monty Python (dat het volgende jaar van start ging). Veel experimenten, veel muzikale lolbroekerij. 'Back in the USSR' is een parodie op de Beach Boys, Paul mag zich uitleven met cowboyliedjes en vooroorlogs klinkende deuntjes. Andere nummers zijn gewoon gekte, en ja, het klinkt alsof hadden ze toen heel misschien mogelijk gebruik gemaakt van bepaalde middelen. Ik zou er persoonlijk geen diepere betekenis achter zoeken... Meer rechtoe-rechtaan-nummers zijn er ook, zoals de klassiekers 'While my guitar gently weeps' en 'Blackbird'. Veel maffe instrumenten en af en toe een ruw randje ('Helter skelter'), en 'Revolution 9' is een soort conceptkunst die bijvoorbeeld Pink Floyd de weg zou wijzen naar wat er zoal mogelijk was. Een (wit) album dat veel biedt, veel doet en gemaakt is door een stel eigenwijze mafkezen op het toppen van hun kunnen.

Eerlijk is eerlijk. Dit album is veel interessanter dan de eerdere albums van deze heren die we mochten raten. Het is niet meer eentonig en het aantal langgerekte lettergrepen is genormaliseerd. Het is nu sterk gevarieerd, zodat er moeilijk een algemene lijn uit te halen is. Een dubbelalbum wel is echt teveel van het goede. De helft kan weg. Dat gebeurt vaker door bands helaas. Alleen in dit geval is de selectie makkelijker. Album 2 is meer enerverend. Het saaiere album 1 kan weg. Kies daar de twee beste nummers van en vervang daarmee de opvuller van 8,5 minuut (DOE NORMAAL) op album 2. En dan hadden deze mannen zelfs van mij 4 sterren gekregen.

Zelden is er een dubbelalbum verschenen waarop alle nummers geweldig zijn. Dit album is helaas geen uitzondering. Maar ik moet zeggen dat het wel bijzonder veel afwisseling biedt. En het is stukken beter dan de Beatles van de beginjaren. Hoogtepuntjes zijn While my guitar gently weeps van Harrison, Julia van Lennon en Blackbird van McCartney. Eervolle vermelding voor Helter Skelter, waarmee naar men zegt de heavy metal begonnen is. Maar ach, men zegt zoveel

There are some all time bangers on here. There's also a lot of just ok to not good songs. It's a 3.5 but that 8 and a half minute track of noise is making round down.

Even with Revolution 9, this one gets 5/5 (mainly because I always skip past that one).

Heyyyyyyyy, so according to my uncle Manuel who I saw about 15-16 yrs ago, this was one of my dads favorite album. Don't think I've ever listened to it front to back though. Excited for this one! oooooh it's a 2 disc set. I didn't know that

Back in the USSR has a cool guitar solo. Blackbird is a beautiful song!! 💝 Rocky Raccoon is a cute song :) Helter Skelter was a good song I enjoyed sexy Sadie and honey pie too. Overall really well put together album that I could listen to anytime. Had a bit of everything, but wasn't musically boring at all - each song was really interesting and creative. 5/5

Lots of notable songs here, a few curve balls that are a bit jarring and brings the score down a touch but some of my all time favourite Beatles songs on this album but as a whole not one of my favourite Beatles albums.

3. It's a good album, I enjoyed listening to it for this challenge but honestly, I don't think I'll come back to it. Maybe I'll listen to a couple of the songs again but as a whole it's just not quite my cup of tea.

Not huge on Beatles was ok

I was looking forward to this - I love the Beatles. Or so I thought. I think I like some Beatles. In small bursts. This was a bit much.

Several awesome songs, some clunkers, could have used and editor. Extra points for real guitar and drums, and extra points for being the Beatles. Can't give it a 5. Call it 4.5.

Honestly when I think of an “album,” this is usually what comes to my mind. The biggest band in the world, fresh off a stretch of 3 classic, creative, and cohesive albums, find themselves without a manager and a direction. So they go to India, write a bunch of music, record it, and say f*** it and release it. Every good album needs drama, every good album needs filler tracks to keep the pace. There are days where I get tired of hearing Sgt Pepper or Revolver, but listening to the White Album is always interesting. And yes, that means I even like “Wild Honey Pie,” “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road,” and “Revolution 9”

This took me about a week to get through. The only song I would actively support is Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da. Track #10 says it best: I'm So Tired (of the Beatles). Also, Bungalow Bill specifically can get lost.

Always amazing

I thought the first half of this album was phenomenal and had a bunch of solid tracks such as Dear Prudence, ob-la-di ob-la-da, and while my guitar gently weeps. I thought I was jumping into a damn near perfect album till I saw the length of this bad boy. The second half contains some of the worst I’ve heard from the Beatles, however their worst isn’t all that bad in general. Overall I feel like this album was almost too psychedelic at some points, which really lost me. Still a pretty solid album overall though

I had notes from the past day. I forgot to save them and then I couldn't recover them. Oh well, it was a solid album, way too long of an album though. The first disk of the record had the hits, while the second one had mainly deep trippy stuff that I really do not care for.

I feel like I gave a lot enough explanation of why it’s an important album already. For a non Beatles fan this album is probably waaaay too long but I’m obviously a huge fan so it’s like a gold mine of classics as well experimental tracks that makes you feel like you’re in the studio for a day hearing all the a-sides and the b-sides they’re working on. Pretty good

Let me start by saying: I love all things unconventional. I love anything that purposefully subverts expectations. This album, from what I have learned, does just that. The Beatles were the biggest band of all time, and used this album to completely dissolve themselves of the responsibility a band of that stature would have to make consistent music for a specific audience. I love not just what this album does and says about music but about art in general. That the very creation of it is what’s important. I also really enjoyed playing this on vinyl, I took the album in small chunks through the day and it was the perfect vibe. No notes.

After first listen: some really good songs here no doubt but unfortunately the album suffers from being watered down by a lot of what I would consider to be filler. After hearing about the circumstances of this album I understand why it’s like that but it doesn’t change my enjoyment. Double albums always suck. Don’t do them. The highs are very high though, i mean it is the Beatles. Just listened again and yeah the second half of this album kinda blows. Favorites: back in the ussr, while my guitar gently weeps, blackbird MMM: BACK IN THE USSR, YOU DONT KNOW HOW LUCKY YOU ARE BOY💂🏼‍♀️

Not usually a Beatles fan but I did really like this

I grew up in the 70s. Now the Beatles have never really been out of style, but by the time I discovered this album in the mid-80s, no one my age particularly wanted to listen to them. I DID NOT CARE. If you were riding in my car, you were going to listen to "Wild Honey Pie" and "Revolution 9" and you were going to like it, damn it. If I was going on this journey, I was taking everyone I knew with me. My whole 17th year in this world revolved around this album, which I played endlessly. I was a weird pre-alternative kid who loved the Smiths and REM, but this album spoke to me. It still does, more than almost any other album. It opened my mind to all kinds of possibilities in music. This is probably one of the most creative and diverse albums ever made. The songs really don't connect at all and it absolutely should not work to put them together, but somehow it works. That's a testament to the talents of the Beatles that they managed to pull it off, in spite of personal tensions and creative splintering. In fact, I would say that this tension allows these songs to live together in this space. It's that disjointed sensibility that gives this album its fire. It's all at once melodic and whimsical, ethereal and lovely, even abrasive and gleefully weird. You have several of the most well known and beloved Beatles songs ever made, mixed in with all kinds of odd little gems that you don't hear much if you're not a fan. This album remains a stunningly vital work, over 50 years since it came out. It never ceases to be entertaining and it always encourages us to expand our ideas of what music should be. Absolutely crazy album that I had no idea had so many of their biggest hits on it. It's funny to say that this is a huge departure from their normal music, but Sgt Pepper's was the album before this one. However, this is still a big departure, in a much different way from Sgt Pepper's. Not all the artistic decisions land for me, which is going to happen in an album as long as this. You cannot deny a legend though. Favorite tracks: Back in the USSR, Helter Skelter, Yer Blues

I understand why dad loves this band, this album is loooong (which may be to it's detriment) but it's still filled with some absolute belters! Back in the USSR is a great start, Glass Onion, Ob-La-Di, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Blackbird, Yer Blues, Everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey, Helter Skelter(!!!), God this is good. Also I get the 'number 8' Simpsons joke much more now, but wiersly I really liked Revolution 9 still. Huge album with a huge reputation that it definitely deserves

My favourite Beatles Album by a country mile. So much to unpack here. It goes to a lot of places, proto metal, country, early sampling...a peak of creativity over perfection.
