An interesting album that is over the place, but also offers a glimpse of the brilliance that was to come in subsequent albums.
Did not expect this to be as good as it was. That's on me.
First listen. Super strong start and love the instrumentals, horns and sound effects. Once I realized it was Brian Eno made sense. Wish the singer's voice was stronger on some tracks.

Connaissais juste de nom. Pleins de trucs full intéressants! Du hautbois encore 😄 des sons de synth vraiment cool, des structures atypiques, mélodies de bass sur du noise full lyrique, d'autre fois presque atonal sur qqch de plus conssonnant. Souvent le pitch est rough (le piano qui embarque après le solo de sax soprano... ischhhh ça passe raide. Le son est pas malade ça sonne boxy bien souvent , un peu garage mais avec des citations de Ravel😄 Les tounes plus rock n roll sont moins l'fun. Les voix sont pas malades...surtout celui qui vibrate à la Julien Clair Ça mérite d'être sur cette liste amplement !
Ça commence fort, ça s’essouffle. C’est intéressant, je suis content de savoir ce que c’est maintenant. Ce n’est pas ce que je croyais. Le drummer veut trop, le bassiste score à côté souvent. J’ai bien aimé le sax dans la première toune.
J'avais peur au départ. Jusqu'à maintenant, à chaque fois qu'on parlait d'un chanteur en le comparant à Brian Ferry, je n'aimais pas ça. Voici donc enfin le temps d'entendre ce qu'il fait. Et bien c'est pas si mal. Il y a son tremolo qui peut venir agaçant, mais dans l'ensemble, avec cette formation, ça passe bien. Le style théâtral n'est pas trop dérangeant avec la masse de sons qu'on retrouve dans plusieurs pièces et la façon que la voix est mixée. Ensuite, en approchant cet album en terme de face A et B comme à sa sortie, la face A est vraiment super bonne. L'intro du disque m'a fait penser à un mix de l'intro de Tales From the Punchbowl et du Brown Album de Primus. Peut-être des clins d'oeil à cet album. Après on est dans un rock vraiment pas plate. Le mix sax, guitare et synthétiseur de la première chanson est fantastique. Dans son ensemble, j'aime le côté que Brian Eno apporte au groupe. La face B s'essouffle un peu et à partir de Chance Meeting, mon intérêt s'en allait tranquillement, du moins à la première écoute. Par contre à la fin de l'album, j'avais envie de le remettre. Je ne connais pas les autres disques du groupe, mais pour un premier album, ça part vraiment fort. Un album que je vais assurément revisiter. Pièce préférée: Re-Make/Re-Model

This is worse than I expected. Roxy Music look like a competent group of musicians but this is just a bit rubbish. It’s uninspiring and monotonous. Only reason that it’s not a 1 star is because it wasn’t actually painful to listen to. Just unpleasant…
As an album this is... not great. There's one properly stand-out track (Virginia Plain - who'd have thunk that?) but the rest are just not up to snuff. As I write this review, "Sea Breezes" is playing, and it's just a bit shit. I do like some of the tracks, but the album just seems thumbed together, without a journey, a theme or anything really. One track doesn't make an album.

Roxy Music debuts strongly with a series of artsy tracks characterized by its glam rock influence, creative synths by the emerging Eno, and a sound that stands out from anything else from the early 70s, opening the gate for a kind of crisp and clean sound rock is capable of in later alternative music of the decade. The first half is fantastic, among the best in their discography, indicating how far they'll take these ideas into their dark sequel For Your Pleasure. Not only does the band come together, but the synths and sax are incorporated so well despite them not being very common at the time. Not to mention Bryan Ferry's voice, very glam-like and pop-oriented, used for so many purposes in a single track. The second half is severely lacking, with some highlights, but no coherent songs to carry the impressive display of the former.

The first few songs have a bit of a Grateful Dead meets David Bowie feel before the prog/art rock really takes hold. Brian Eno’s contribution is immense and hints at his ambient music aspirations. Frankly this album absolutely blew me away. The suite like nature of the album plays best as a whole and the genre fluidity works very well for them. This album is way ahead of its time and parts of it sound like it could have been released by contemporary independent artists.
Virginia Plain y su aire a Talking-Heads es lo mejor del disco, el resto un sonido a cabaret y honky tonk que me da un poco igual. A ratos también se nota la mano de Brian Eno, o eso me parece a mí.

I'm happy I'm listened twice to this one - the first time it faded into the background a bit when playing on my speaker as I worked. Really interesting sound, I especially liked the use of sax and synth (early for it's time I believe). I found it hard to pick a top choice, but I'm going with 'If There Is Something'. As an aside, I really like the album art too!
Sounds like they sat down to listen to Bowie and their main takeaway was, "We should be weird like him!" Some of it worked and some of it very much did not. Best track: Virginia Plain

I was ready to write that no second side so spectacularly fails to fulfil the promise of its first, but then I, you know, listened to it again. Know what? Those last five songs are nowhere near as disappointing as I remembered. The Bob is silly but tolerable and Chance Meeting can go, but Would You Believe? Sea Breezes and Bitters End can stay. Sure, they're not as fabulously daft or mesmeric as the gay Dylan we get on side one, but they still belong to the cocktail party Ferry & co. construct out of their seventies dream of romantic liberation and industrial quantities of hair gel.
Not sure about this. It’s very chaotic. I can praise it for being very experimental and trying things out but it feels like disjointed noise at times. Really don’t like Bryan Ferrys’ voice.

4.4 - Bryan Ferry’s vibrato, cushy bass lines, jangly extended saxophone solos, songs that descend into colorful chaos…and Brian Eno pulls it all together with his studio wizardry.
I wasn't really feeling much until the second half of the album, which was very strong IMO. It wasn't so bad that I was going to try to stop listening (I haven't gotten to that point with that many albums yet) but I felt so-so until a few songs in. Sometimes, that's all you need.
I'm surprised how much Bryan Ferry sounds like David Byrne here, but perhaps it's more accurate to say that David Byrne sounds like Bryan Ferry. There's something special about the sound of this album. Sometimes it feels like it's very much a product of the early 1970s with echoes of the '60s, but other times it feels lightyears ahead, forging bold new paths and kind of inventing its own genre. Spotify had the American version with "Virginia Plain" among the tracklist and I'm happy with that.

I thought Roxy Music were 90s electro, so this was surprising. Some good, some bad. Didn't set my world alight.

Certainly an ambitious and interesting debut album. Ahead of its time in a lot of ways for 1972. I have a hard time getting past Bryan Ferry's creepy vocal stylings though - just not appealing to me. 3 stars.
A brave debut. Bounces around all sorts of genres and the band don't really give a fuck what you think. And it works.

I'd heard this once before and generally enjoyed listening again- though I think the first half of the album is much stronger. Remake/Remodel is an excellent, chaotic, humourous introduction to the band, with a driving, insistent beat and number-plate backing vocals and pop music allusions galore. This seems to pre-empt the spirit of art-punk five years early and carries through to other tracks like Ladytron, If There is Something and parts of Bob Medley. The doo-wop closer is pleasant but a bit lightweight, and other longer tracks like Sea Breezes and Bob Medley end up feeling a bit disjointed rather than adventurous. I'd still like to hear this again though and think it may grow on me.

Sounds like bits and pieces of lots of things yet as a whole is like nothing I've ever heard. Despite the number of songs I saved I wouldn't say that I especially liked it so much as I spent the full 45 minutes marveling at it. 3.5 rounded down.
Maybe it’s a style over substance thing, but I’ve never understood the appeal of Roxy Music. Compared to their peers: I like Hunky Dory, I like Transformer, I like 10cc but this just sounds like unpleasant noise to me.

This album is really astonishing for the time when it was made. It sounds like a post-punk album but was made before anything but the earliest punk albums had been released. The music can be a bit much at times, but overall it's a really fun listen and sounds way ahead of its time 4/5

Side one is approaching masterpiece status. One great song after another. Unfortunately side 2 slows down appreciably but not to the extent to give this great debut anything but a great score 4.5 stars

Never heard these guys but heard of them. I know it's that early glam rock stuff. Might be ok, might suck. Gets pretty spacey at times but also rocks, I guess Bowie comparisons? Got a bit long towards the end, couldn't honestly remember any of it even an hour or two later, but still 3/5 for not pissing me off at the time haha.
сколько там, полгода прошло с прошлой ревьюхи? за это время пытался прогнать альбом ну раз пять наверное. и, при всей привлекательности на бумаге, так и не мог найти для него место в сердце, ну просто тупо мало хорошего контента, хотя начинается как раз с козырей. первую песню всегда отмечал очень положительно. а потом как-то все сливалось, вроде вокалист своей саркастической харизмой приязнь вызывает, но его в песнях по минимуму, куда больше места занимают унылые проигрыши и дрочьба в пустоту. сонграйтинг тоже не передовой, разных партий в песнях много, но над ними не проведено работы, они не склеены и не перерастают друг в друга, просто есть и довольные торчат как заноза в жопе. потом, буквально с неделю назад, смотрел фильм Бархатная Золотая Жила, и там услышал песню Ladytron. и внезапно понял, несколько она мне нравится. прямо такой: ну все, надо собраться с силами, переслушать и проникнуться окончательно. переслушал - и понял, что все, нахуй надо. ну не идёт никак, не западают остальные песни в голову. Что-то в каждой есть, но не так много, чтобы внимание этому уделять. поэтому ставлю прямо середняру - 5/10, да и бог с ними, хороших песен у них все равно достаточно, неуклюжий дебют вполне можно простить
Наконец что-то похожее на хорошую музыку. Действительно хороший альбом. Довольно странно, что до 1001 я о группе вроде даже ничего и не слышал. Звучит как нечто, что по праву должно иметь признание в культурных кругах. Судя по Вики, оно так и вышло, но до меня как-то эхо признания не добралось. Перед нами первый альбом коллектива. Звучит довольно профессионально и зрело, качество записи весьма на уровне. Альбом комплексный, много всяких жанров завезли, какие-то – по кайфу, как прог- и психоделик-, какие-то ¬– душат, как глэм-рок. Занимательно, что второй же заметкой об альбоме я написал «Virginia Plain заёбывает». Хм-м… интересно, какой же единственный трек вышел синглом альбома? Думаю, когда-нибудь смогу составить список худших треков альбомов, что становятся синглами. Также к душным трекам можно отнести 2HB, Would You Believe? звучит довольно навязчиво. Да и при многократном переслушивании даже неплохие треки душить начинают, вроде The Bob. И подобное отталкивает от глубокого знакомства с творчеством коллектива. Но есть прям неоспоримая годнота вроде Re-Make/Re-Model, If There Is Something, Sea Breezes. Такие треки прям тащат. Особенно в душу запал If There Is Something с его панковским вокалом и прогрессивным, арт- инструменталом. Но всего этого словно мало для благоговения перед альбомом. Ещё занимательно, что обложка показалась весьма проходной и какой-то пустой, мейкап у тян отвратительный, да и одежда безвкусная. А ведь чуть ли не благодаря обложке группе удалось подписать контракт на издание альбома. По итогу имеем просто хороший, крепкий альбом. Хотя бы с оценкой не приходится сомневаться, ровно 4 из 5.

Slaps right from the start. Then the second song sounds like an intro and the rest of the album washes over me. I couldn’t care less for the singing, but it would probably get boring without the vocals.

What if the Spiders from Mars actually sounded like they were from Mars? After the barrage of British new-wave the generator was spitting out, the more experimental (and at times, playful) sounds of Roxy Music were like an oasis. The opener "Re-Make/Re-Model" gives you no real idea as to what the song is about with its title, but it may as well be a mission statement for the entire album, as nearly every song reinvents itself over the course of their runtimes, with Bryan Ferry's erratic, sometimes borderline unhinged singing often the only anchor. Even the shorter songs manage to flip switches on you: Chance Meeting gives you about 30 seconds before the music gives the lyrics a completely different complexion. The second half isn't as captivating as the really strong first side, but at its dullest, it still managed to keep my interest. Key Tracks: Re-Make/Remodel, Ladytron, If There Is Something
I'm pretty familiar with Eno's work but not Roxy Music, and all I knew about it was that they were supposed to be glam rock. I don't know that we get all that much glam here but we do get a near-perfect side A of explorative and wild rock that I'm shocked I've never heard before. Side B fares considerably worse, where the tracks range from "aimless but enjoyable" to "how did this get recorded?" but oh that side A

First time listening: 3/9 songs liked Eh. I don't think glam rock sits with me well. The Theatrics are cool and all, but not something I would listen to on Sunday mornings out of the blue. Very interesting musical ideas from each song though. No song saved

Fun arty and weird vibes. Definitely an album for a specific time and mindset, but excellent if it is what I am craving that day.

Good intro to the Roxy style and clearly an "important" album, but it didn't really grab me. I kind of agree with Bryan Ferry's displeasure with the arrangements of some of these tunes.
Wonderful flow and a dream like quality make this unmissable.

Ferry Good
This one was very interesting. More experimental than other albums from its time. It's not as good as other glam albums, but it marks where the whole genre would shift from there.

Phil Manzanera elevó la guitarra en este disco a otro nivel, wow. Brian Ferry canta como un viejo cochino, me encanta. 5 de 5 y así.
Roxy Music is kind of in a league of it's own, in that it's hard for me to find strong comparisons. That, combined with the strong show of compositions, makes me adore this album's presence. It's pretty weird, but also loud and fun! It also takes time to wind down and get pretty lowkey, which is always welcome for pacing purposes as long as the songs don't suck (they're fine here). Pretty good overall!
Really interesting instrumentation. At once almost like a jazz ensemble, passing solos around while a chord progression repeats underneath...but then one song borders on classic country rock, at least until the vocals come in. And all the oboe? And even an English horn??

My first introduction to Roxy Music was visual. I spent my early teens hanging out at the Northland Mall in Worthington, MN (side note -Joe Exotic once held an animal showing there!) Many mall hours were whiled away flipping g through every available album in the Musicland record store, and the Roxy Music covers got my attention. It wasn’t until college that I paid attention to the tunes. This is a good album. I really like the guitars on the opening track and throughout. “Virginia Plain” was the hit, and the rest is pretty listenable, especially “If There Is Something” and “The Bob”. Album rates a strong 3.5 stars, but I have to round down due to “Sea Breezes” which stumbles into Pere Ubu territory.

I had really high expectations for this album because a lot of music critics I like regard it highly and it's one of Brian Eno's first projects so I was hype to hear his influence. Then "If There Is Something," came on and I'm like is this the Grateful Dead, what is going on? And that "huh, what is this?" vibe continued for me throughout the album. Mind you I don't hate the Grateful Dead but it was just unexpected, which I think was kind of the vibe they were going for on this album. A lot of cool experimentation for pop songs that I can tell influenced future artists, but it definitely could of used some refining.
Loved the experimental and eclectic sound. Also loved the way that this album felt like a story without the use of skits, very cohesive and has musical through lines.
I originally didn't think I would like this, but there was enough weirdness, and actually really solid drumming that kept me interested. Has a little more going on than a typical 1970s classic rock album. I like it.
I did not take a deep dive into this album. It was not what I expected. Had some rocking tunes but nothing stood out. They have an album cover with boobs on it, so that's something.
From the Wikipedia article, I got that Roxy music has great importance in music history, but their songs are too basic for my taste. Good songs but just it.

Igual todo me sonó bastante bien. Disfruté mucho la batería en varias canciones y aunque pienso que no hay skips, sí tengo una canción fav: "If There Is Something", gran gran rolón. 9/10

Great drums, great guitar, unique vocals, and uniqueness everywhere... what's not to like? Solid find for me.
I liked this for the most part. I had no idea what I was going into with this one, but I was pleasantly surprised.
started off really poorly and I was ready to rate low, but it picked up! Again, not really a fan and don't intend to listen again, but its interesting to see early experimentation into artpop and artrock. Glad they did this for future bands, but still not an album for me.

I reckon I'm at 0 when it comes to Roxy Music, one of those legendary bands I've never got around to pay attention to. At first I thought it was going to be too bombastic, but thankfully it stopped short of "too". Nice eclectic mix, a couple of fillers, but overall a good album, very creative.

I get that this is supposed to be progressive rock, but this didn’t connect with me at all. The voices were grating and music was ok at times (horns!), but at others was awful noise. It’s just mostly bad, in an uninteresting way. 1 extra star for effort/ concept. I listened to some of their 80s stuff after the album and liked it a bit better
Psychedelic and weird
Suprisingly "out there", and hard not to compare to Ziggy Stardust, which came out at the same time and is epic experimental rock. This is pretty uneven, some interesting Bryan Ferry warbles, but the music doesn't hold my attention.

I liked this. Felt like so many of these i kinda knew, but not these versions. Maybe they are covers or covered.
Not bad. Like a mix of David Byrne's voice, David Bowie's weirdness, and a little sprinkle of 50's era Rock n Roll

i don't want to give it a full four because there were some songs where i was like ok hmmm this is too weird for me but some of them were just weird enough where i was really enjoying it. the first half of the album was super fun and unique to listen to, they have their own sound and have fun experimenting with it. if i could give 3.5 i would, if the latter half of the album didn't go off the rails it would be 4

Some sort of mix between Bowie and Pink Floyd. First half was very good, second half reminded me of The Wall.

Disappointed in this one - the synth textures on 'Virginia Plain' and the earlier tracks promised an exciting fusion of proto-punk and dance, but afterwards the LP fizzled and hit middle-of-the-road territory for me. Multiple times I got absorbed in other things and then snapped back to the music only to be surprised that a track was /still/ playing, often repeating the same riff I had tuned out on.

Some good tracks, interesting tunes. Nothing mind blowing.
I enjoyed that far more than I anticipated. Something about Ferry always creeped me out. My sister was a fan when I was a kid, every time I heard his voice or saw him on TV I'd cringe, there seemed something wrong about him. Musically this band are great though, that dampens the cringing down enough to somewhat enjoy the stuff.
Not too bad - definitely had that 70's alternative, art rock sort of feel.
Enjoyed this album overall, though some parts more than others. Good musicianship, lots of interesting ideas, and can clearly see why it was so influential. Not sure how much I would be likely to revisit, although it seems like it could be a grower.
I really liked the first track and a couple others. Other than that, it was alright. Wasn’t a fan of his vocals a few times, but it wasn’t as jarring as *ahem* other artists *ahem*. I can see the early punk influences and how it fits into the larger music canon but wasn’t really my thing.
The saying, "Don't just a book by its cover" doesn't usually apply to albums. Generally speaking, you WANT your album covers to give people an indication of what they're getting into. Before I hit play on this one, I had a definite idea of what I was about to be listening to. I was wrong. This was ... good. The Wiki article has this pegged as "glam rock" and "prog rock" but, to me, it felt like proto-punk. In a good way. I don't know. Whatever it is, I dig it. Docked a star because a lot of the second half is too damn Brian Eno for my liking. Also, WTF is up with that last track? It's a rip off of the damn Monster Mash. Why would you do that?

Pleasant, understated, playful. The band fits every instrument but the kitchen sink (I think) into a collection rock songs, without busting open the album form. The outstanding elements are noisy bits which do not grate, distinctly British vocals, and the lack of idle repetition or filler of any other kind. There is a taste of prog composition in the penultimate track, but in a quiet way. Nothing is particularly earworm on first impression.

This album deserves more attention than it gets. A masterpiece.
