Reviews (page 6 of 7)
New to me. Pleasant surprise. Wild flavors, reminiscent of Rocky Horror; deliciously somber notes of Eno. 💘
Do all Brian Eno produced albums end badly?
Good intro to the Roxy style and clearly an "important" album, but it didn't really grab me. I kind of agree with Bryan Ferry's displeasure with the arrangements of some of these tunes.
Good but tailed off later in the album
Ferry Good
This one was very interesting. More experimental than other albums from its time. It's not as good as other glam albums, but it marks where the whole genre would shift from there.
Art rock at its artiest. BT: Re-make/Re-model, If There is Something, Would You Believe?
Putting it in the context of 1972 its definitely a cool mix of pop and experimental sounds.

Roxy Music is kind of in a league of it's own, in that it's hard for me to find strong comparisons. That, combined with the strong show of compositions, makes me adore this album's presence. It's pretty weird, but also loud and fun! It also takes time to wind down and get pretty lowkey, which is always welcome for pacing purposes as long as the songs don't suck (they're fine here). Pretty good overall!
Really interesting instrumentation. At once almost like a jazz ensemble, passing solos around while a chord progression repeats underneath...but then one song borders on classic country rock, at least until the vocals come in. And all the oboe? And even an English horn??
Liked it more than I though but that still only warrants a 3 star
My first introduction to Roxy Music was visual. I spent my early teens hanging out at the Northland Mall in Worthington, MN (side note -Joe Exotic once held an animal showing there!) Many mall hours were whiled away flipping g through every available album in the Musicland record store, and the Roxy Music covers got my attention. It wasn’t until college that I paid attention to the tunes. This is a good album. I really like the guitars on the opening track and throughout. “Virginia Plain” was the hit, and the rest is pretty listenable, especially “If There Is Something” and “The Bob”. Album rates a strong 3.5 stars, but I have to round down due to “Sea Breezes” which stumbles into Pere Ubu territory.
I had really high expectations for this album because a lot of music critics I like regard it highly and it's one of Brian Eno's first projects so I was hype to hear his influence. Then "If There Is Something," came on and I'm like is this the Grateful Dead, what is going on? And that "huh, what is this?" vibe continued for me throughout the album. Mind you I don't hate the Grateful Dead but it was just unexpected, which I think was kind of the vibe they were going for on this album. A lot of cool experimentation for pop songs that I can tell influenced future artists, but it definitely could of used some refining.
I originally didn't think I would like this, but there was enough weirdness, and actually really solid drumming that kept me interested. Has a little more going on than a typical 1970s classic rock album. I like it.
From the Wikipedia article, I got that Roxy music has great importance in music history, but their songs are too basic for my taste. Good songs but just it.
I thought the first and third songs were pretty hype but everything else was boring at best. 6
pretty good.
started off really poorly and I was ready to rate low, but it picked up! Again, not really a fan and don't intend to listen again, but its interesting to see early experimentation into artpop and artrock. Glad they did this for future bands, but still not an album for me.
Some great tunes
I reckon I'm at 0 when it comes to Roxy Music, one of those legendary bands I've never got around to pay attention to. At first I thought it was going to be too bombastic, but thankfully it stopped short of "too". Nice eclectic mix, a couple of fillers, but overall a good album, very creative.
Meh
Fun and bouncy. Not overly memorable though.
It was okay, some songs were fun
Psychedelic and weird
Not bad. Like a mix of David Byrne's voice, David Bowie's weirdness, and a little sprinkle of 50's era Rock n Roll
i don't want to give it a full four because there were some songs where i was like ok hmmm this is too weird for me but some of them were just weird enough where i was really enjoying it. the first half of the album was super fun and unique to listen to, they have their own sound and have fun experimenting with it. if i could give 3.5 i would, if the latter half of the album didn't go off the rails it would be 4
I like some of their other stuff better, but still good.

couple decent songs but a lot of just noise
Some good tracks, interesting tunes. Nothing mind blowing.
I enjoyed that far more than I anticipated. Something about Ferry always creeped me out. My sister was a fan when I was a kid, every time I heard his voice or saw him on TV I'd cringe, there seemed something wrong about him. Musically this band are great though, that dampens the cringing down enough to somewhat enjoy the stuff.
Not too bad - definitely had that 70's alternative, art rock sort of feel.
Enjoyed this album overall, though some parts more than others. Good musicianship, lots of interesting ideas, and can clearly see why it was so influential. Not sure how much I would be likely to revisit, although it seems like it could be a grower.
I really liked the first track and a couple others. Other than that, it was alright. Wasn’t a fan of his vocals a few times, but it wasn’t as jarring as *ahem* other artists *ahem*. I can see the early punk influences and how it fits into the larger music canon but wasn’t really my thing.
This was bland to me, just another British rock album. It was kind of weird at times, but it didn't feature any sort of sound to draw me in.
Can’t categorize this but the cover doesn’t match the sound
No, I don't like it very much.
It was ok. Some good parts. Some weird parts.
Nothing spectacular
Mediocre like the last album.
ive har a few roxy music albums now and i still cant warm to Bryan Ferrys voice. Thete are some ok pop tracks here, but its a bit of a dirge.
irgendwie alter kram, alte geschichten mit ferry/eno und definitiv nichts was bleibt.
Ein Erstlingswerk halt. Gibt es viel besseres.
Roxy continues to be rocky for me
I thiiiiink I can see what they're going for here, but when the singer starts yodel singing it really crashes the whole thing. Points for some of the innovative spacy sounds and trying to push the envelope on the instrument side, but far too experimental and a slog
Surprisingly disappointing.Virginia Plain the highlight but the rest a mixed bag .
Favorite Song: If There Is Something
After Country Life, I was vaguely excited to listen to this one. Unfortunately, this one is just plain boring
Listening session: may 17th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: no Thoughts: my second Roxy Music album on this project and I’m always misled by the campy album covers, as the music itself doesn’t really interest me Favourite tracks: Ladytron & Virginia Plain
It's just odd, not for me
Ugh, this was another rough one. Some of the songs on here started well enough, but then something would happen that would completely derail the experience. If There is Something sounded great at the beginning, but at one point the singer started using this wild fake vibrato. My daughter was in the car during this song and commented that the singing sounded like a bird having a seizure. And he uses this voice often! Later in the same song the soprano sax suddenly starts inexplicably squealing. One year I had a sixth grade band in which a few kids would come into rehearsal and just start wailing as loud as they could on their instruments. This sound brought me right back to those classes. I'm left scratching my head at all of the decisions that were made in creating this album, and the folks who willingly paid money to hear this in their homes...
Expectation: -> I don't know this band. After listening: "-> There are definite moments when I think this is good. These moments are not frequent and are scattered among a lot of songs that do not appeal to me. Enjoyed ""If There Is Something"" much more than the rest. Enjoyed the saxophone and other odd instruments/sounds scattered throughout. I applaud the creativity. " Track ranking: Something Bob Bitters Re-Make Ladytron VA Believe 2HB Chance Sea
They have some songs I love, but I didn't care for this.
My boyfriend claims Roxy music has better albums. I won’t be finding out for myself. This album was … not compelling
I wanted to like this, but I just really didn't. Some of the instrumentation was inventive and enjoyable to listen to, but the vocals often ruined the songs. Some of it was just harmonically jarring and unpleasant. Overall not a great experience. Two stars.
What the heck did I just listen to
Instrumentation is good but his voice is pretty grating.
I've tried 3 times to listen to this album and I just can't get through it, sorry. I'm not sure what it is, but I just can't.
Often when I heard about a band I either like them or not. Roxy music is so forgettable I know the name, that Brian Eno got his start here but I can't remember one song by them. The singer is very annoying, at some times he sounds like a goat. like a kid who just found vibrato and can't stop using it.
Goofy singing style that's reminiscent of Bob Dylan. Instrumentals were interesting at times. My favorite track was "Sea Breezes".
Didn't enjoy. Bryan Ferry's heavy vibrato is horrible to listen to. Ahead of it's time? - maybe. A bridge between glam rock and punk? - maybe but yeah whatever.
I think for 1972, this album genuinely might have some of the most inventive and creative sounding instrumentation of this decade but the biggest thing that weighs this album down for me is I don’t like the singing at all. I think the vocals are honestly way too over the top and annoying but the instrumentation and production are so damn good it’s hard to not really enjoy theses songs. I honestly think this had the potential of being a near perfect album but the vocals hurt my enjoyment of this album so much for me personally as well as a couple of slow tracks.
Wanted to like this... did not. 4/10
Interesting and I can see where it’s influenced future work but god I am bored of how many rockish albums this list gives - 2.8?
Interesting album. I can hear elements of the sound RM became known for, but this debut album is a bit edgier with more punk elements.
aged absolutely horribly 😅
I hate the dudes falsetto or whatever it's called where you unnecessarily ring out notes in your voice, it is annoying as fuck. This thing was honestly just bizarre. Half the songs on here sound like they'd belong in the credit roll of a horror film just due to how weird they are. Not the biggest fan of this one, too much variety between songs and I couldn't pick up a commonality between any of them except for oldmate's annoying voice.
Would have been a 3 if not for the second to last track. That was no good.
2 stars because of the drummer and guitarist. They both sounded amazing, only to be bizarrely interrupted and marginalized by an odd sounding meandering nonsensical wind instrument(sax?) and vocalist. Another example on this list of a promising, but unfinished project
Standouts Remake/Remodel
A confusing entry onto the list. And unlike "Country Life," this album does not get a half-star bump for an excellent album cover. I'm a little scared by the model on this one.
How do they have 3 albums on this list? Much like Tim Buckley, one album is too many. As with their other entries on this list, I was mostly indifferent to the instrumental music but the terrible vocals brought the overall experience down a notch.
264/1089 i wasn’t too enamoured by this one, i just didn’t find it particularly exciting or offering a unique perspective really for the most part i guess Sea Breezes was the stand out to me 22/100
Ei iskenyt. 2/5.
Couldn’t dig it. Too weird and not in the good ways. No was a crazy genius but he must have saved that all up for later work.
It’s not that deep, I just didn't like it.
I was expecting better than this. It was fairly bad in places. Bryan on this album sounds too much like David Byrne talking heads
I wish I had better language to describe how I feel about this album, but the best I can come up with is that this is just boring.
This probably would have been a three star album, if not for Brian Ferry’s vocals…just don’t like them at all. Two stars.
ni este ni el anterior que salio de la banda me gustaron, zzzzzzz 5/10
One of these songs is good. The rest are not. Some are okay. 2 stars, I guess
That was a weird mess. Not entirely without its charms though.
It makes sense that this is a debut but at times this feels eclectic for the sake of it. I expected to feel this one more. Likely influential and important for what the band grew into but it didn't grab me much.
I was pretty shocked by how much I disliked this. I got the later album Country Life the other day and almost gave it a 5 because its sound was so appealing to me… I held back because I couldn’t really say what the point of the record was, and I think I need that story to make ir all work for me. But anyway, I said to myself, “Wow, if this is Roxy Music after Eno, I wonder how much I’ll like it when I get an album from when he’s in the band Nope. Did not compute. I can hear Eno’s contributions and get the ideas behind some of the songs. But the sound is then opposite of the well-integrated Country Life for me. It felt like a junk drawer with a lot of elements I didn’t want in there (like the sax). It felt like David Bowie outtakes. I couldn’t process it as prog or glam or whatever, it just felt like a mess. They’ve got one more album coming up on the list and of course we have plenty of Eno in other contexts. Here’s hoping I had a moment of temporary insanity and I’ll come back to this album one day and love it too.
Roxy Music’s radio hits are awesome, but there’s not a single track on either two of the albums I’ve heard here that I can say I enjoyed.
Definitely has some sauce, but boy did this get weird in the bottom half. I cannot say that this was a great listen, but at the very least it was an interesting one. Probably right at a 5/10. Fave tracks: - Re-Make/Re-Model - If There Is Something - 2HB - Would You Believe?
No private session used for Spotify. Never got into Roxy Music and their seemingly required salacious covers. I don't care for the singer's voice, the music seems random and disjoint. I have had to listen to several Roxy Music albums now, none of which I couldn't have died without hearing. Also, the woman on the cover...is she ok? She looks like she might be in pain.
Wanted to enjoy this one more than I did. With some exceptions, including Virginia Plain and Bitter’s End, I found much of the album to be grating and not a pleasant listen.
Simply no reason to have three Roxy Music albums on this list. The author does have it hard for odd music, and I get maybe putting 1 RM album on the list to give the reader/listener a sample of the moment. Is this that album? As good as any, I suppose. They are all an unpleasing experience. Nothing a tab of acid can’t fix! 😀
Not my favorite. I felt like vocals were a bit annoying and they were not great on the instruments.
In this case, the instruments while great were overshadowed by the vocals
I dunno what is going on with his voice but I don't remember Brian Ferry sounding like this on either For Your Pleasure or Country Music. Maybe I'm mistaken. But he does not sound pleasurable on the ears in this one. Actually pretty much nothing sounds very good on this album. It's pretty tinny and bright and sort of squeally. Glad they went up from here.
nope-still don't care for vocals. sounds like all the other Roxy albums on here
Segundo disco do Roxy Music que peguei, e essa banda continua me iludindo. Suas capas todas possuem imagens safadas, então sempre penso que a música vai refletir essa vibe com uma sonoridade sensual… E sempre me engano. 2.5
A handful of good tunes, then a smattering of skippable noise.
Got weird at points. Otherwise wasn’t bad
When you think New Wave, you think 1980s. When you think Classic Rock (if you an Xer; not a millennial, who thinks classic rock is anything before Napster) you think 1960s-70s. It’s easy to forget that there was a bridge there, and Eoxy Music was part of that bridge. Much like Bowie, they were pushing the boundaries of rock, psychedelia (like on 2HB) and pop (like Would You Beleive?) and in doing so created something new. You hear it most in Ladytron. I think the problem Roxy runs into, though, is like Bowie who genre jumped they explore several unlikely genres in the same album and even the same song. Bowie would keep the same genre for an entire album, even it was short. Here, for example, The Bob jumps from classic rock to prog in the same few minutes, and it presents as inconsistent. This is definitely a historical influence album, and I enjoyed listening to it as individual elements but I felt like I missed something as a collective package.
2.4 2x
first half not bad but nothing catched me tho i listened to it in the first full spring sun bitters end was cool
I've never been able to handle this guy's voice. If they had a different singer I might give it four stars but if I can't get past the singer, I can't listen to it.
I've seen them do much better
Not for me! Did not like this man’s voice
What’s the appeal of sophistication? A striving for an unattainable lifestyle of the idle rich? A perfection of the form, enabled by years of study and mastery? I don’t dislike later Roxy Music, Avalon is a legit triumph, but the glam rock era just...it’s like a James Bond film, all glitz and cheeky action in service of what exactly? The vibe and feel, I can see how that all must’ve been exciting for a brief window, but even then, was it all that outside of the UK? Listening to these records, which I am clamouring to find catchy songs or hooky melodies anywhere, it’s again that phenomenon of being told about a really crazy party someone went to that defined their entire personality. That Ferry, a working class-born striver himself would eventually become a lite-Tory really completes the picture of sophistication’s empty promise.
Fine but largely forgettable, less avante garde than their other offering but feels like that's a good thing! 2 - a good album but not my thing
This was just a bit, meh! I really struggled to listen to the whole album. Just not my vibe.
< the Beatles Interesting they had this sound in 72 but it's just not enjoyable to listen to
1972 effort didn’t stack up with all the greats in IMO of the decade
Really had to force myself through
all the Roxy Musics are like 2.5-3.5 territory. listenable, approaching enjoyable. Brian Ferry sings too much on this one though.
My impression was that this album kind of half-asses like six things instead of whole-assing any one style or vision. 2.5
I did not care for this.
Bland
Enh...
Questionable to be on here. Virginia plain is fun
Mildly unsettling.
"2HB" was my favorite track. Feels like a vinyl you have in your collection just to say you have it in your collection
Not very good
so mid don't get at all why is there so much of this british music
Top Songs: Virginia Plain
I hear a lot of praise for Roxy Music, but I'm not sure this is the best example of their work. This particular album feels rather dated these days. At least a few of the tracks were interesting.
Nah, another stinker for me, but hey - I'm checking it out and can't say I have before or would have otherwise 🤷🏻♀️
Pretty boring honestly
Inte min favorit, nice att ha på i bakgrunden men inget som fick mig att vilja lyssna aktivt.
had the potential to blow me away and did not. underwhelming
Don’t really like this. Ig Brian no had a part in making this album and I’ve never really cared for his work. I have rated one of his albums and I tried listening to the one for airports or whatever but made me want to fall asleep. This album is certainly different from that definitely in a better way but still don’t love this that much. Too weird and at times annoying for me.
More generic rock
I think I just hate everything Brian eno has involvement with
0/10 bekannt 5/10 Beste Songs: Remake/remodel, if there is something, would you believe
I really dislike Brian Eno. His art-rock movement leaves so much to be desired. This is just eclectic for eclectic's sake.
1.5
Two Roxy Music albums in two days is too much Roxy Music, please stop it.
I expected significantly more crooning given I had only heard their later post-coital knob-rock works - I much prefer their more cohesive sound once they moved out of their Mums Garage, stopped the experimental phase and fully committed to allowing Mr Ferry be a certified pussy magnet.
Not sure what genre this really fits into. Not my speed and a hard listen for me. I gave it a real try, but just couldn't connect to the songs and the music was all over the place. I am sure this was ahead of their time for 1972, but just not my cup of tea.....no groove at all.
I don’t like this band
Well that was a slog
Unfortunately didn't like this as much as i like the feisty woman on the cover. I often try to like albums because they have cool covers but it just didn't work out. I find his whiny airy british voice very annoying and the music is not interesting or cool enough to make up for it. It's alright and I guess I see why someone could kind of like it but it's not for me at all. The woman on the cover is very for me though and it's my understanding that a lot of their covers are similarly erotic and provocative and woman centric which I really appreciate. Sea Breezes is a little interesting might be the best track but maybe I just like that we're nearing the end. It's got bad sounds in it that maybe I should appreciate for some experimental bullshsit reason but i don't find meaning or groove to it. The drums are arythmic in a way I find more childlike than emotional. These are songs that do not DESERVE to be seven minutes long in the same way that LCD soundsystem or Sonic Youth does. Bitters End is a little funny. The merit here is, i guess, comedic value. It's kind of pleasant with the horns. ?? It's overall unsettling. This is more settling for some creepy marionette to be singing than a human person achieving a degree of success in the music industry. His voice is so hollow and freaky i dont fw. I was like WOW this got really good but it turns out i just had PAvement queued LOL
Always in the category of music my mum liked that I couldn't get into. I know I've listened to bits of theirs before but couldn't remember what, returning with this album I see why. Opinion unchanged, I don't really get the appeal. Not bad just fairly bland.
I don't know what exactly I was expecting after seeing the title and cover art but it was not this! Fun, moody, hard, soft this rock album has a full range. In the end it was just alright. 2 outta 5
Not my favorite album by them.
Not really all that fussed by this
Vocals remind me of David Byrne, good musicians, song composition not to my liking
Ladytron is good and I like the riff between verses in If There Is Something, but that's about it. The playing and tunes are good but his voice is too affected, it'd be better with a harder tone.
Not my type, i cant decide if this is rock or pop or psychodelic NOT my type, but of course not THAT bad
I did enjoy this more than For Your Pleasure although that's not saying much as I gave that album one star. Instrumentally this feels more interesting but I still cannot stand the New Wave / New Romantic vocal style, it just cuts through me. Quite enjoyed Virginia Plain, only to discover it wasn't actually on the album and they added it to the US release after it was a standalone hit.
I cant listen to that type of music anymore. I used to love it, but guess I have calmed down
It was fine
Parts of this were ok, but for the most part this just wasn’t for me.
Initially surprised by the quality of the rock energy and new wave sound that this preceded? To me it sounded a lot like what we heard from The Cars in 1976. Big fan of the end of 2 H.B. and the medley after that. Not much else stood out 🤷♂️, but it seems historically relevant. 2.5 stars
Not my thing, found it a bit annoying to be honest.
Discount talking heads
Some pretty weird stuff.
Bof/20
It's quite amusing that I just listened to another album from such an over represented genre. As such my replacement recommendation is Tism.
Inconsistent
This music feels like it's edging me. It just constantly sounds like it's going to get good, and it just doesn't. The vocals don't particularly help, it's like a bad impression of David Byrne.
I was about to give it one star when hearing the first song as it was very annoying. "Sea Breezes" is similarly annoying. The other songs are less annoying and sometimes even enjoyable. I wouldn't buy this record though
I feel like I should like this more, but I don't.
The adoration heaped upon Roxy Music Never really made sense to me. They're fine...I guess. I think it has something to do with Brian Eno. Just not my thing.
Always feel like I should like Roxy Music more, but I just don’t.
Kunde ha varit bra men är för experimentell, känns nästan opersonligt
Enough interesting ideas in the first half to get a second start (even if I didn't connect with it) but that back half was rough.
Sometimes this music hits for me but most times, I cannot connect with it.
Confusing, big time.
The only thing that surprised me was how old this album is. My time line is skewed, due to Ferry's vocals I also think I mix it up with David Byrne. While I don't really like the music at all, I do appreciate especially the synth and keyboard work of Mr Eno.
So this list has certainly provided a few good new discoveries. But I would have lived a happier life having never learned of the existence of Brian Eno and anything related to him. This album isn't as bad as his solo stuff at least. It's still somewhat experimental, just not as off the rails. There are some good jams--the intro track is decent. Mostly just not very interesting though.
Meh
This was listen-able, but I didn’t enjoy it.
Relatively easy listen slight melancholy to lyrics and melody. Bg music
2 stars
54/100
Bryan Ferry's wrabble is one of the more unique and annoying vocals that I've heard on this list. The album is tolerable new wave, but the problem is that Ziggy Stardust was literally released on the exact same day (June 16). One of those albums is legend, the other forgotten. I didn't hate it, but I can't love it, either.
Not for me…apart from a few tracks, none on this record…they bore me. And not a fan of Bryan Ferry.
I just couldn't connect with this. Sea Breezes was pretty much the only track I enjoyed. The rest wasn't evocative enough to grab me, nor was it emotional enough to soothe me.
I might be a bit cynical, and I know this is about seminal, sound changing albums... But compared to their work just 10 years later this is a hard listen. I'm a basic Bitch but give me Avalon any day.
Interesting to listen to early Brian Eno, knowing what a prolific producer he became. Listenable but not great.
Ei nää vaa oikeen lähde.
Ok
These jabronis are not nearly good enough to be listed on here once, let alone 3 times over the wealth of other albums that exist that are not on this list. Just random instruments and poor singing, yet again. 3/10.
My third and final Roxy Music album is finally here. I’ve really wanted to love the Roxy Music albums that I’ve reviewed, but they just haven’t really clicked with me, and I gave three stars to Country Life and For Your Pleasure. I like Avalon and Flesh and Blood, but alas, neither of those albums are on this list. I’m hoping that this self-titled effort from Roxy Music will finally break through for me! Try as I might have to love this album, this had to be my least favorite Roxy Music entry on the list. I don’t get it. I like Bryan Ferry’s vocals, and I think Brian Eno is a genius, so this should be right up my alley. There were elements here and there that I enjoyed, but there were only a couple of complete songs that I liked on this album. The songs that I didn’t like felt disjointed, lacked catchy hooks and melodies, and tended to drag on too long for my tastes. “Virginia Plain” was one of the few songs I enjoyed. It was one of the few songs that I thought had a catchy melody, and even though there were some weird elements to it, the song worked really well overall. The weird bits made the more melodic parts of the song stand out, which I really enjoyed. “If There Is Something” had a fantastic narrative to the lyrics, and I loved how the electronic elements, piano, and guitar all melded together. The electronic elements evolved and developed in a way that I found really interesting, and I loved the wavering quality to Ferry’s vocals. You could draw a straight line through Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, and David Byrne. I don’t know where I was going with that remark, I think it was just an observation that I had, and I like making connections like that. But other than those two songs, this album just couldn’t put it together for me. Roxy music is incredibly influential, but I’ll take their poppier sound from the eighties over their earlier work.
Avant-garde in the way only art-school Brits with Eno in the control tower can be—glammy, self-conscious, oddly stitched together. The future sophisticates of Avalon start here with something far more jagged and theatrical, often sounding like a band unsure if they want to groove, sneer, or float off into sonic abstraction. Ferry’s quavering croon wobbles somewhere between lounge lizard and mad prophet, and the whole thing teeters on the line between pretentious and inspired. “If There Is Something” rides a surprisingly Stones-y riff before morphing into a pastoral-prog epic complete with operatic warbling. “2HB” sounds like a velvet cocktail soaked in synth gurgles and saxophone bursts. It's an odd album—but odd doesn’t always mean good.
Brian Eno definitely left his mark here. I was expecting something more punk rock for some reason but it turned to be something totally different. The album cover really made me want to listen to it, but I don’t know if it left me satisfied. I like the first part of the album best, but to me this is like a 2,5
#632. It's clear to me by now that Roxy Music was one of the author's favorite bands growing up due to how much of their stuff [and some of their solo stuff] is on this list. But let's be honest though, it's just not very good. The music is boring and the singing is truly awful on some songs. I could definitely go without listening to this group before I die. 2/5: yawn
meh. I liked Sea Breezes though.
We only ever invited Brian Ferry to one Houmous & Chutney Christmas party. The guy is a nightmare. He only consumes things that rhyme with his name. Otherwise he gets so upset and really quite violent! You try to organise the arrival of a crate of cherries at midnight on a Saturday in December in 1979 in Hemel Hempstead?! That God for Lens love of Sherry! 2.3 5/10 2HB
I remember liking Country Life a lot more than I like this record. Music generally is fine on this one. Definitely could be the type to veer into an Iggy Pop/David Bowie post-punk sound that I dislike, but it doesn't. But the singing and production is what's hurting this record for me. I don't remember the singing being this bad/weird on Country Life, with this one having a lot of wailing and odd choices (I figure the singing inflections are intentional). The production to me also sounds kinda flat to me. Overall just not enjoying this one as much as Country Life.
no thank you!!
Being forced to listen to more Roxy Music than just Love Is The Drug has made me realise just how much I hate them. Vocals are awful, the melodies, where there are any, are ponderous and aimless, and the guitar riffs seem to be for the sake of the guitarist rather than the listener
I guess it isn't bad but no part of me wants to listen to it again.
It was acceptable, but honestly, nothing particularly impressed me.
I expected more, got absolutely nothing from this.
Eh, I don't know why this album made it on this list.
Listened twice, but not much stuck out in either listen.
yeah not feeling this one
Love those 70s drums. Didn't mind the psychedelic aspects but the experimental goofy tracks bothered me. Also the vocals are pretty bad throughout. Really enjoyed the few good songs there are though. Tough one to rate.
The drum sound on this album is unreal, the production is fantastic, but the songs are all forgettable. I might need to revisit this album later to see if my feelings change.
Might have scored slightly higher but in one song they mugged off Elvis calling him a racist. I ain’t having that!
Not my favourite Roxy music tbh. I think they have much stronger music than this
No hate but didn’t love it. 2.5
Like some of their later stuff but this didn't do much for me
Som en snubbe på karaokestället Som är lite för duktig och sjunger för många låtar under kvällen
Glad Dr Frankenfurter was able to take time away from his castle to create a record. Space rock is always going to sound goofy and dated to me, but there are some decent moments throughout (in particular the excellent drumming chops), but still fails to do anything besides being outrageous for the sake of it.
Boy, this singer does nothing for me. It's a shame, because I really enjoyed the instrumentation on this album. The vocals were responsible for at least a full star point demerit. Shame.
Pretty forgettable. Not necessarily bad, just missing something. 2/5 Won’t listen again
It's pretty good, the vocalist reminds me of The Talking Heads, Parquet Courts, and I don't know. I like it, the music is pretty good, but there's haven't exactly been any moments that made me think "damn that's good."
Top 3 Songs: 1 - The Bob (Medley) (6) 2 - Re-Make/Re-Model (1) 3 - If There Is Something (3)
Not quite what I thought it would be like
Pants
Not my jam.
There were parts of the music I thoroughly enjoyed. Other parts not at all. I do not like his voice. 2
Its not as terrible as everyone is saying. Definitely grows on you. But its held up for the Eno and Ferry experimental thing more than for the actual songs. A few memorable ones but the majority are weird and forgettable.
pretty enjoyable, i like the old rock and the music is something i can enjoy, especially the guitar but kind of strange instrumental parts
Not very good 2/5
I don't get the point on Roxy Music
My Mac just blew up in the middle of writing this and I lost another incredibly pithy review! :( Mostly, Bryan Ferry sounds like he's struggling. I love Eno and his oddness, and I love Manzanarek bringing some heaviness. Quite the now-familiar "Glam" sound, with the sax and rocking piano. But Ferry is trying to hard and it shows. It's a struggle, I sort of feel bad for him.
Hard to believe Roxy Musoc had multiple entries in this list.
mitään ei huomattu että joo o ihan sontaan kuitenkaan sairss hra objektiian pysty kyseenalaidtava 2 star
Was happy to see this….like their music generally but not this album
I didnt like this.
This was much different than I expected. All that I could think about while listening is that it felt like someone had a good, solid idea for a band/album, and then just let in every intrusive thoughts they had about each song. Most songs were flooding with things that ruined them. There was a song that was really good, though, so maybe there's something there long term? Idk. Overall, not for me, style or singer, but there was one hidden gem in a pile of dirt. Favorite Song(s): 2HB
Meh one or two good tunes
Generic Glam Rock.
Eh.... not the worst thing I have heard but I can't really say I enjoyed it. Mostly just not my thing but probably not actually bad.
generic shit
Still pretty rough and unformed here, without the smooth polish that would characterize the later stuff that they are still primarily known for.
Third Roxy Music album I've had on the list (so far) and I'm yet to hear a track I really want to listen to again. Don't get them at all
Another middle of the road album, I don’t hate it, especially the instrumentals but the vocals aren’t necessarily my favorite. I can’t decide if it is an overuse of vibrato or some kind of effect they have going on, but it gets a little annoying. I wouldn’t leave the room or anything if someone put it on, but not one I’d choose.
This was probably fine for something from 1972, but the further into the album I got the less I liked it. 2.3
I’ve long thought that critics of the arts can often become so familiar with their chosen medium that they become desperate for originality, and that desperation leads them to develop some really bizarre taste. There are few better examples of my idea than the fact that so many music critics seem to love Roxy Music. Best song: The Bob (Medley)
What a strange album. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a fan of Roxy Music’s later albums, records like Avalon and Flesh + Blood are really enjoyable and stuff that I happily listen to. This record doesn’t really fit that category to me. It’s aggressively all over the place stylistically, and I constantly found myself feeling lost and not having fun. There’s some great hooks throughout, some moments that are enjoyable, but as a whole work it feels really disjointed to me. I’d say I enjoyed the first half of the record more than the second, where things really devolved into over-synthed madness. I can understand why one would enjoy this record, but it’s not for me. 2*
Nothing i was too super hyped about on this one.
point8.
Das letzte Lied war okay, der Rest leider nicht
This is pretty boring even by British standards.
I remember Roxy Music from the 80s. I thought the soft pop was okay back then. You could hear it everywhere. I hadn't heard their debut album before. It reminded me a lot of Talking Heads, a lot of whose music I don't like. This album was a bit catchier. But I won't be listening to it again. 2/5
Arranco bien pero al final me dejó muuuuuy poquito. Es un rockito que se queda entre lo melódico y lo psicodélico, la voz es buena onda Talking Heads.
eh
Pretty cool at parts, pretty mind-numbing at others.
Weird, as expected. But not charmingly weird. Annoyingly weird.
Simultaneously too much and too little. The long tracks go on for days and a lot of the shorter ones finished without grabbing my attention. There are some good points to this album. I enjoy how weird and experimental the sound can be - particularly on "Chance Meeting". Would, by the way. For your information. In case you might like to know. For your perusal. As a matter of fact. Truth be told.
some fun drums I guess
More odd British rock. Eh. I'll pass. If There is Something and Sea Breezes had some nice music, and the music in the rest of the album was fairly good, but the singer was boring. Best song: If There Is Something
2.0
I honestly didn’t care for the singing and lyrics but the instrumentals were really good
Enjoyable doo-wop moments
Look I recognise it for it's contribution to a genre (multiple rather) that I enjoy. There were parts of the album that grabbed my attention but mostly I zoned out and was disinterested. At times the fuzz guitar drew me in. There's likely a mood where this album will fit my needs but ultimately I think there's other albums I'd go to first. In saying that it deserves some more listens and I think it's possible that it will grow on me more.
Solid 1.5 stars but I'm rounding up to 2 because 1 is too harsh. It all melded together and I didn't want to listen to anymore. Very forgettable. The biggest thing going for it was the fantastic amount of camp on the cover art. It was very misleading as to what the music was.
Feels like every song is its own new genre. Not bad but also didn’t really captivate me.
Rather boring.
I was pleasantly surprised by both Country Life and For Your Pleasure when they came up earlier in this project (and Avalon, which I can’t recall now if I listened to because of this or just in my own time) Anyway, this is their debut and started strongly with a couple of really fun songs, and the diversity and interesting ideas of their later albums are still there but it’s so much more inconsistent. A few of the tracks are genuinely quite difficult to listen to, and it really seemed to drag despite being only 45 minutes
2,5
I don't know what Roxy Music's self-titled album provided that their follow-up album For Your Pleasure didn't already provide, seeing as both albums are on this list. I'm flummoxed as to why two Roxy Music albums are here, especially when they changed their sound ten years later--meaning it would be at least something different for my ears. This is that artsy, experimental rock popular in the early seventies. Bryan Ferry's leading vocals were too high and grating. Experimental music usually doesn't do a lot for me, but I can recognize how different Roxy Music's sound was even from their contemporaries.
Another Roxy Music album, another confused listening experience where I find their sound to be pretty unique overall but their direction to be unclear. It really makes for an intriguing but overall unsatisfying listening experience. Wish I could say that the weirdness and uniqueness were enough for me.
Das letzte Lied war okay, der Rest leider nicht so
Virginia Plain is a banger but good lord I cannot stand Bryan Ferry’s voice
2.5
Just OK
Not bad, but didn’t stand out really.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this album unfortunately it just was kind of strange and I didn’t love it. I think it was somewhat uninteresting and I just don’t totally see its influence.
This album is at its best when it sticks to relatively straightforward rock n' roll. The only tracks that I can enjoy in full are "Re-Make/Re-Model" and "Virginia Plain." The other songs are weighed down by their eclecticism.
I have heard of Roxy Music many times but never checked them out, so I was a little excited when this popped up. I can’t recall having been this disappointed in a long time. Some wasn’t terrible, but too much sounded like a bad attempt at DEVO before DEVO came along.
The inclusion of two (at least, I’m only 230ish albums in) Roxy Music records has me irritable, when I know how many good post 2000’s records have been left off this list. This album wasn’t as good as the RM album that came after it, not was it unique enough to justify its place on this list
Roxy music had a few songs I liked back in the day. None on this album. I found this bland, and suffered through some.

For fuck sake…
Not necessarily a bad album but it for sure has some duds like "Chance Metting". I generally like the groove of "Roxy Music" but this is our third album and I think this is the one that left the least impression.
Glam rock, it's a bit pretentious. Don't mind it but don't love it. Better albums to come I think, and of course Brian Eno went to on much much greater things.
Too much clarinet
Tries to do a lot of flavours of rock-adjacent, doesn't really do any of them well really. I don't really like his voice, he seems mostly as disinterested as I was. Not my cup of tea, 2/5.
Not my favorite of theirs.
I think of Roxy Music as an 80's band...had no idea they were cranking stuff out in 1972. I guess it took them a while to figure it out...wasn't crazy about the album.
Never heard this album before. I was really looking forward to this, but ended up disappointed.
Favourite songs: Would You Believe? Least favourite songs: If There is Something, The Bob (Medley), Chance Meeting, Sea Breezes 2/5
One good song. The rest was just bleh
Idk about this, just blah, why is this on here, etc. 2* It had some moments, I heard timpani at one point. The closer makes me think of a musical, but the album overall just came and went.
Hyvin keskinkertainen 70-luvun brittipoprock-levy. 2/5
Nothing memorable and at times strange
Sounds like if David Bowie made the wrong choice at every turn
Mad to think that it sounded like this BEFORE the drugs. And… unpleasantness… Still, clearly important if not particularly enlightening in this day and age.
i liked the other 2 RM albums I got from this list more
Idk why but this did nothing for me. I probably need to re listen? I like some of their other songs so idk why this was so meh for me.
Don't think I'd heard this before and realised I only really like Roxy Music when they're shaping their experimentalism into somewhat pop structures, I found much of this dull and self-indulgent. Just made me want to play For Your Pleasure instead
Diden't quite grab me. Nothing super catchy or profound to find here
very 70s. Absolutely inscrutable I'm sure they had a really good time making it tho
Fine enough
I wasnt a big fan 1.5
Very elusive album that I can't quite put my finger on. At times I loose focus, at times it demands full attention. For good and bad its a lot like Bowie - the rockier guitar stuff isn't that interesting, kind of generic blues rock with some powerful sax. The synthier kookier stuff (like Ladytron) is more original and interesting, with cool textures and less predictable structures. The bass is doing a lot of work in both, melodic and leading. I still don't get why they're so hyped and influential - I guess because of what Eno went to do? And you had to be there to get excited by the Ferry glam side of it? But yeah, left feeling like I don't get it and it just passed me by.
despite "music" being mentioned twice in the name and album of this, I'm not sure if this is actually even music
No more for me thanks.
this was better than i expected but still not something i care for… i wanted to love it because of how experimental it all seemed and some real cool sounds but at some point; it just became noise and i couldn’t really move forward after that unfortunately
Roxy Music are always very cool but this isn't one of their best
Roxy Music also has good tracks, unfortunately not on this album.
An ok album
Not my style, but some songs were good 2.5
Albums like these make me feel like I don't understand music because how did people find this great
Lead singers voice was difficult to listen to like a bad version of David Byrne. Same old 70’s British vibe.
