Reviews (page 14 of 14)

This was really good.

She has an great voice, some of the tracks are a bit shit though, starts strong and falls off from there

This is a HEAVY ROTATION album in the Spence house. Her voice. Jesus. And the band is so damn good. I remember one time an 80's hair band shredder that I worked with at a guitar shop said something like "Yes, Janis is a great singer. You'd think she would've had a decent band that was at least proficient..." F-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-uck you! This band has it all. Technical chops, feel, groove, psychedelia. I love this record and it really bums me out that Janis was in a better place when this record was made and had plans to be on the up-and-up, given her past addictions. It's a sad story. She was treated horribly as a kid in Texas. Lots of self medicating happening. Which is interesting because her voice and songs are like medicine, in a way.

Great album. My review is tainted slightly by my own ignorance. I always though of Janis Joplin as a singer/songwriter/musician - come to find out she didn't write any of these songs and only played guitar on one (Me and Bobby McGee). Still - I'm tasked with rating the album, not my preconceived notions of a single artist. To that end - the songs are great, but made great by Joplin's vocals. Sung by anyone else, I don't think they'd land as well. The music is just sloppy enough to match her rough vocal style. Get it While You Can is a standout track - even with the more iconic songs on this album.

This sounds like a performer at the top of her craft. Sadly we never got to find out where she would go from here. She was one of a kind and this album is a great testament to her brilliance. 4 stars.

Classic. 5/5

4.5 Great voice, great band. Good songs. Tragic that this was her last album.

Enjoyed more than expected.

Pleasantly surprised. Lotta soul. Lotta funk. 4.5.

*Mercedes-Benz *Cry Baby

Brilliant, first time listening to the album in full. Raw, funky, bluesy. What a voice!

Overrated

Just...not my thing.

By far Janis's most refined album. I think the rawness of Big Brother suites her voice more, but this was a really good album

1971: Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee

Good album. Great to listen to at the end of a busy day

Good album

Love this album, love Janis. I can’t believe I haven’t listened to this album before.

Great voice, decent lyrics

Лучшие песни: Move Over (кайф), Cry Baby (ваще кайф, лучшая песня на альбоме), Half Moon, Mercedes Benz (ну мило) Не очень: Me and Bobby McGee (ну я такое не сильно люблю), Get It While You Can (просто менее всего запомнилась)

Awesome album

This was an amazing album. Loved it

Great. Jazzy but heavy at times. Love it.

Janis Joplin was a troubled person that left us way too early. She bared herself and put it all out when she sang. Very soulful and heartfelt album. 5 all the way on this one.

Classic. What a voice. What passion. No one did it better.

HEEYYY YEEAAAHHH

A solid album that showcases the best of Janis

Certified 5 stars. RIP to the goat

A great voice and nice bluesy-rock tracks. Liked it a lot. Though its quite clearly the covers and songs written by other people are the strongest songs - bobby mcgee, trust me

Hard to deny that this is good, but I just don't like JJ's music much. Part of it is her voice, and part of it is that it's the quintessential, I don't know, music to do cocaine to? Interested in seeing some live performance footage, I feel like I would appreciate her more that way.

So soulful and expressive. Feels deeply heartfelt. Would've been intense to see live.

I can appreciate Janis Joplin but it's not my style. Sounds pretty though.

A bit hit and miss. One or two recognisable classics

Janice has a great blues voice. A Woman Left Lonely is a wild tune, transcending the genre. Half Moon Comes in with this funk rock intro and I'm all for it. Wow what a back half of an album.

Sexy and the voice of a chain smoking angel.

girl power funky bluesy opener slows down a lot half moon picks back up banger instrumental track weird bluesy country song sort of felt out of place mercedes benz sounds like it was recorded after she died trust me is a good near summary of the album and her career and her life as it seems she didn't have time enough to grow appaerently pearl is what she wanted people to call her before her death. The most remarkable things about this album is she was a member of the 27 club so she was young releasing this and white. 3 - decent, could stick on again.

Don’t get the hype.

Way better and more polished than I was expecting. Some brilliant songs on it like half moon, all are decent. Giving 3.5 rounded up to 4.

Tremendo trip

timeless raw and heartbreaking posthumous albums rarely hit so hard.

what a woman

this was my first time listening to this album in its entirety! prior to this i had only heard "me and bobby mcgee" (my personal favorite). i also vaguely remember my confirmation teacher ranting about "mercedes benz" and me subsequently losing my mind at the absurdity of it all. that's how you know janis is an icon. i was initially introduced to her when i heard "piece of my heart" and watched her performance in the woodstock documentary. nothing compares to the sound of this woman's voice!!! she was truly a gem. or should i say, pearl.

Great album. She has a powerful voice, and the songs have really good instrumentals

Good afternoon music to play in the background.

Janis Joplin is famous for dying before her times. She has a unique voice that doesn’t hold back. Some of the songs on this album are great. Bobby McGee is a classic. Overall it’s pretty good. 6.7/10

just great

Loved it.

A good album, after having only ever heard of Janis, but not what her music sounded like, it was almost a surprise in listening to it. A lot Blues-ier than I thought. Can see how her music will have influenced many that came after her. Best: Cry Baby, Mercedes Benz Worst: My Baby, Trust me

Really lovely.

When I bought my first iPod back in 2005, this was the first album I downloaded and basked in the irony of listening to “Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedez Benz” on the then biggest symbol of conspicuous consumption. Anyways, I love this album so much. Janis’s voice is just one of the most powerful forces on earth. Favourite track: “A Woman Left Lonely”

Felt very gospel-y

i loved mercedes benz and the opening track. really good

This is great to listen to driving around in the car with my windows down. Not as great sitting at my computer trying to work lol.

This album is pure GOLD. She’s incredible

Really enjoyed it

Talented musician, there is no doubt there. I can see the appeal she would have, but honestly I have to say that a lot of the songs were a bit hard on the ears. 2/5 stars because there were a couple of songs I liked.

Good album, good guitarist!

Great voice, poor songs. Starts well enough but found it pretty tedious to get through. Won’t revisit.

Was good, might return to it.

Honest, raw and polished in equal measure. A good listen.

muito bom

One song composed by Bobby Womack which is good, the rest gives me zero emotions.

SOUUULLL!

Very enjoyable album, great voice!

It was July '72 and I was 10 years old, me and my kid sister were spending the summer at our aunt's house upstate New York. I just remember trees, fields and long evenings spent on the front porch swing, singing along to Janis Joplin while the smell of huckleberry hot cakes filled the air.

Nothing special. Best track: Buried Alive in the Blues

Pretty solid

Loved this album... to bad she made some bad choices

What a voice!

Great voice but all very samey.

Very good album. Really enjoyable listening

Really enjoyable - only got one listen in background so need to go back

Jantastic. Jop of the Pops

Spensierato e tormentato. Sussurrato e urlato.

What a voice! Blues rock genius released after she died. What a waste...: Best Tracks: Move Over, Half Moon, Me and Bobby McGee

you can hear the unadulterated passion in her voice. very powerful

not bad, avg blues rock, great gravelly voice and solid musicianship

i liked it

Such a distinctive voice...Ms Janis. Liked a few songs but not my favorite music for a whole album

Janis is a favorite. Bluesy, jammy, rock-n-roll with one of America’s best voices. She conveys love and torture and hope all at the same time. Backing band is great but doesn’t overshadow the star of the show. Also have a soft spot for “Me and Bobby McGee” because it won us a round of drinks at Silky O’Sullivan’s bar on Beale Street on my 40th birthday. American classic, and sad member of the 27 club...

great album, makes me wish I was around in the 60s

Blues rock songs sung increadibly soulfully with a great and unique voice. 'Me and Bobby McGee' seemed a bit out of place, having all the usual country music tropes. Seems a shame that this was her biggest hit when everything else was on here is very different and much better. Overall a really good album.

That voice!

Good. Janis added to my collection. I’ll give this some more time.

She’s talented but the laziest recording engineers I have heard so far ruin anything.

‘Pearl” by Janis Joplin (1971) Very familiar with this album and artist. It will be a struggle here to focus on this album as an album, simply because there is so much worth saying about Janis Joplin and her times. But here goes: “Pearl” is stellar, even without context. Joplin’s soul soars in this recording, which is, almost incidentally, very well produced and arranged. The songwriting is first rate (only “Move Over” was written solely by Joplin herself), and the instrumentals of the Full Tilt Boogie Band excel. Top notch lead guitar, with some great solo riffs. Elaborate bass lines, always in concert with steady and dynamic drums. Nice colorings on Hammond organ. All very professional. But the chief topic of interest here is the vocal performance by Joplin. Her inimitable tonal characteristics are on full display. She does things with her voice that literally no one else can do. Tightly disciplined yet delicate trills. Effortless execution of singing two pitches simultaneously (e.g., hear the first word of “Cry Baby”! I actually did). Dynamic variation as an art form in itself. Listen to the constant interplay between the soft and the loud on “Me and Bobby McGee”. Few singers (or listeners) pay attention to that nowadays. There’s only one way to articulate the line “Windshield wipers slappin’ time”, and it’s the way Janis Joplin does it, though others have tried. Here we’re treated to Joplin’s prodigious range and exemplary pitch control, with vibrato that is customized for each phrase. Moreover, none of her vocal stylings are affected or artificial. It’s as if each song has been internalized, and thus it springs from her soul with minimal interference by her considerable physical singing tools. Listen for what’s going on beneath her breathing, vocal cords, oral and nasal cavities, and phonetic mechanisms. It’s passion. And passion rules over the body as the sound comes out. It’s not just ‘singing the blues’. It’s the blues emerging as song. Her frequent exclamations and extra-lyrical flourishes are not contrived. They seem unrehearsed. She is feeling, and we have the privilege of hearing what her feelings sound like. There is a maternal aspect to her singing. Mom can scold, comfort, rage, caress, and lament with abandon. So does Janis Joplin. But also, there’s plenty of eroticism—of a kind that is not bound by constructs like identity or even gender. It’s lust without heavy moral overtones. I’ll resist the urge to be more specific. This album is superb work of art. Recommend on every level. 5/5

Janis has such a powerful voice but her style of music is not something I'm a huge fan of. I could listen to it if I was at a cook out or something but just for fun, I wouldn't chose it. Me and Bobby McGee is a classic and a few others I liked such as Cry Baby.

Fabuloso. I and Bobby McGee es increíblemente buena canción.

She shows great range, and the lyrics are reminiscent of Dylan. I'm likely to listen to once a year.

Pearl Jamis Joplin

Great album.

Classic! Somehow my GF hated it. Led to some fun arguments.

very nice listen, reminds me of simpler times and drugs. lots of drugs.

What an excellent album, and yet a desperately sad one. She was just a kid. Such a tragedy.

Her voice...

Never listened to much Joplin, and was shocked that she really only put out two albums based her huge cultural influence! Better throughout than I expected, and definitely full of bluesy 60's hippie style...even for coming out early 70s

I've been a fan ever since I was little. Both my parents are huge fans so the you have it. When I found that Bobby Mcgee has her greatest hit couldn't believe it! then I found out that Janis had quite more than I believed. this is an awsome and gorgeous record. Cry baby always tears my heart. Thank you Janis for your work

Really good overall - Mercedes Benz was a beautiful song, especially just having acapella

A timeless classic, full of soul, 60's R&B and even funk. I'm not the biggest fan of Joplin, but I'd give this one another go. The playing is superb.

What is this, classics week? Back to back 27 Club legends. I'm familiar with a few Janis Joplin songs, but haven't heard an album. This posthumous release contains my favorite song by far, "Me and Bobby McGee." She had such a unique, gravelly voice that lends itself perfectly to the sort of blues-rock styles explored here. Short and sweet, with very few songs that don't hit for me. This is another one that I can't give a perfect rating today, but it could definitely rise to that level. Fantastic album all the way through. Favorite tracks: Me and Bobby McGee, Trust Me, A Woman Left Lonely, My Baby, Get It While You Can. Album art: Portraits like this aren't usually my thing, but for a posthumous album I think it's great. It's tender without compromising her free-wheeling image. The framing is excellent as well. 4.5/5

klasika, 5/5

I hate her voice.

She has passion and that blues energy. Credit there. And the story/feeling of the songs are fine. But i really find her voice repelling, and i just can't say that i want to listen to any of these songs ever again.

She is a talented singer but this is the exact music your least fave aunt loves

Some great, classic songs here

I am glad I have grown into Janis Joplin. I was putting this album off because I have always found her voice grating, but now I see a deep soul and feeling. The songs are beautiful.

2 perfect songs. The rest is also great. 4.5

Really, really good. That voice. And as always, fuck heroin.

Excelente, Janis inigualável

uma deusa uma louca

her voice is a powerhouse. she joined blues and rock so well, and there are a few classics on this one.

Not sure I am going to make it through this without forwarding . . . "Get It While You Can," the closing track, is my favorite.

Nice album too much soul for me

Ordinary

Not really my kind of music

Today I'm listening to Pearl by Janis Joplin and released in 1971. I remember being introduced to Janis Joplin by my sister when I was starting to devour good music in my late teens. And this was done by sitting and listening to Me and Bobby McGee over and over again. Then Piece of My Heart became a big deal to me. I've never actually listened to any of her albums. Another in a long line of greatest hits artists I've enjoyed. I'm definitely enjoying this album, and that voice is towering and unique and full of feeling as always. And like other albums, hearing Me and Bobby McGee just roll out of the speakers is a lovely experience. It makes me think of road tripping in the 60s with Kris Kristofferson. It's the best feeling I can imagine right now. This is all tinged with sadness of what could have been had Janis not been part of the 27 year-old rock start death club.

Heerlijk album met meerdere bekende nummers. Wil ik eigenlijk nog wel op lp.

twas aight

Forgot how much I loved this one!!

This Lady was special. You really feel it when she sings. Sad how things turned out for her. Would have been a bright career after this album.

What a voice

Classic Janis.

Voz incrivel, musicas boas!

One of the best Posthumous albums

Love the overall tone and style of the album, feels like I’m in Nashville with a band jamming out. The main highlight of the album is the band that backs Janis, they are highly talented shown in the track ‘Buried Alive in The Blues’. They were strong throughout even on slower tracks like ‘A Woman Left Lonely’. This album has a lot of vibes from Jimi Hendrix to The Doors, it makes the album fun. The worst part of the album was Janis Joplin herself her vocal capability was mixed throughout it shows on the worst part of the album ‘Mercedes Benz’. Overall, I believe that Janis Joplin could be replaced and I’m interested to research if they stuck together or worked with other artists.

Amazing.

Pretty alright. Had honestly never heard of Janis Joplin before. Dunno if I'd listen again, but didn't dislike it.

Great album to end a career on honestly.

Holy Shiitttt!!! Legend

Wahnsinn.

Je veux pas ecouter de Janis Joplin

Not everything was 100% for me, but it was all still really good. 4-4.5/5

Appreciated but not enjoyed.

Great album!

Me and my bobbyyyy mcgee!! I'll give it a few more listens, but I'll definitely listen to other albums from her, she's good.

Me and Bobby McGee like this album!! Rock on

There are parts of this album that I like a lot, but I've never been overly fond of Janis Joplin's style, and it grates on me after a while despite some of the other really enjoyable stuff. I would listen again, but it wouldn't be something for which I'd reach.

Très sympa

Really, really good. Makes you want to take a star off everything else to make it look better still.

It was good but really not me

Greatest voice of all time? Almost every song is good, the great ones completely overshadow the not so great. The great ones really take advantage of her range and voice and passion. The hoarsness comes through and it feels so real. Some songs reminded me of Dylan in that they start calm and collected and eventually end in a very different way. The passion is always there in the background and it's just waiting to come out (for Dylan it's the harmonica, for Joplin it's her voice). Trust Me is probs my favorite, but the first two and last one are great as well.

Sings with such soul that you dont see today. Very good, classic rock vibes with soul.

Yeah it’s good but I can’t listen to her song for more than a minute or two.

This shit was fun as hell. Just not enough stand outs. Funky though.

Actually a surprisingly enjoyable listen

Too rocky for me

Never really dug her stuff before but pleasantly surprised to like this album

Joplin's distinct voice really makes this record. It's fun, exuberant, and loaded with some phenomenal instrumentals (see opener "Move Over"). Shame we lost her so young, seems like she'd be a lot of fun to see live. Favorite tracks: "Move Over", "Cry Baby"

7.5/10 F.T.: Me and Bobby McGee

Sorry, I know she is a legend and shit, but man, her voice is pretty grating. Great guitar work though

3.5 - a few I haven't heard and I liked

Fuck Janis Joplin is crusty. You can smell the stains on her fingers just looking at the cover. Singing is pretty impressive (especially considering all the drugs and ciggies), but wears out its welcome kinda quick. Music isn't too bad, just average rock of the time. 2.5/5.

Janis Joplin is, hands down, top 5 coolest artist ever. This, being smoother and more polished than her previous work, is her at the top of her career.
