cry baby is transcendent, but perhaps one of my most contrarian views is that this is the inferior version of me and bobby mcgee. most of what's in between them is ffffine.

Still don’t really get her, but this wasn’t too bad.

I went through a pretty good classic rock phase in high school, so I’ve heard this before. I was curious to see if I maybe I was more ready to hear it now. Not really. This is not my thing, and I rounded up for the definitive version of Me and Bobby McGee. Cool rock/blues voice but the whole leaves me cold.

Pleasant when they are in a slow groove, but once they speed up she’s overwrought.

Didn’t love ot

It’s easy to recognize how insanely talented and influential Janis Joplin is. Maybe if I were in a different mood, time of life, or circumstance, I would enjoy this album more. But today I didn’t. With the exception of one song, this album didn’t capture my attention and I was looking forward to it being over. Of course, this is subjective, and if someone argued this is a five-star album, I couldn’t disagree. The musicianship is great. Her voice is iconic. I just didn’t enjoy it personally. Fine, nothing noteworthy for me

I honestly think I prefer Bette Midler in The Rose

A couple of classic soulful rock ballads in this album, both of which are enjoyable and feel like a throwback. “Cry Baby” is the highlight for me, with a couple of other strong tracks, but overall the album doesn’t do too much for me.

Overall, it wasn't my favorite. Its entirely a decent album that showcases Janis's vocal abilities, but I didn't find any of the songs too enjoyable for my tastes. I just don't think I would ever hop back into this album, and even the most popular song on it (Me and Bobby McGee) was not as good as I had hoped. 2.5/5.

never been a JJ fan, although I do appreciate. The radio stations ruin it for some tracks in general, Bobby McGee one of them.

There were a few songs in here, like Mercedes Benz that tapped squarely into my image of Joplin. But most of it wasn't very memorable.

I feel like this list is very wrong. Top albums to listen to before I die and a lot of them being not that good this is one of them. Now I didn’t dislike it but it was rly nothing and would feel the exact same if I didn’t listen to Pearl. Her voice was quite amazing but then she starts like crying screaming making it hard to listen too. And god help me Mercedes Benz felt like nails on a chalk board. A lot of the songs weren’t bad and even good I must say so this is a solid 5.1/10 2.5/5

I genuinely don't get the appeal. Lots of people here praising her voice, but although it's undeniably powerful, it's also pretty hard for me to listen to. The grating tone in Mercedes Benz is awful. This is musically a bit better than Cheap Thrills though; the band is pretty tight. A higher two.

I get why JJ got famous but this doesn't really appeal to me honestly. Her vocals are impressive but stylistically I find them pretty grating. The songwriting is average at best imo

Janis Joplin’s “Pearl” showcases her talent, but sounds more like collection of songs than album. Makes sense given the posthumous release. The backing band is great, and the name “Full Tilt Boogie Band” is kickass. Despite Janis Joplins talent and influence this is not my style at all. I have no doubt it was more impactful to those hearing it before the decades worth of music made afterwards. It all sounds the same to me, the highlights being “Cry Baby”, “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Mercedes Benz” (which I remember my Mom singing, as I inherited my love of Porsches from my Dad).

This album has notes of funk, blues, and rock. Her voice is raspy, but her delivery is strong and emotional. Move over Me and Bobby McGee Trust me 2/5

I've never liked her voice. I've tried this album before and bounced off of it. I liked some of the songs with less vocals this time.

The power and passion are certainly evident in her vocals but it is pleasant to listen to? Not for me. Her voice is kind of annoying and seems to reflect the hard living that caused her to die while she was still in her 20's. Considered a great by many, she's just not my thing.

Sure, it's a classic but I just can't with the insane wailing. If people could step outside their Haight-Ashbury mind castles and listen to this objectively, I think the ratings would be lower. Or maybe I'm just biased against screamy singers.

Music is regular, nothing special blues. Her voice is kind of interesting and enjoyable at the beginning but got pretty annoying toward the end. Wouldn't say I'm a fan.

i think i can see how good was it in the 70s. I can imagine some of the songs used in movies as iconic songs for some scenes (maybe wild west scenes or something) as an iconic touch to the movie or the game. Oh maybe the show Fallout. well, not for me

Janis Joplin, for me, is a prime example of a supremely talented artist that does literally nothing for me. Clearly an incredible voice, but in a style and wedded to music that I couldn’t wait to stop listening to. Sorry Janis, I wish your life could have been an easier one.

Enjoyed the start of the album, Janis has a cool voice. Lost interest towards the end. Not for me.

Maybe worth visiting as an artifact as a different time, but it's hard not to see Joplin as someone who lifted a soul / R&B vocal style and did it over more straightforward rock. Maybe it was revolutionary at the time, but I don't think it aged as well as folks wish it did.

Хотите блюграсс? Вот вам. Хотите соул? Пожалуйста. Желаете кантри? Держите! А давайте сверху ещё обильно польём это рок-н-роллом и добавим по кусочку харда, эйсида и психодела. На бумаге это, наверное, звучало как гениальная идея, но на деле… Знаете, это как если бы вы взяли сразу все специи из кухни и добавили их в одно блюдо. По отдельности — прекрасно, но вместе? Ну, скажем так, не всем такое придётся по вкусу. Дженис будто мечется между жанрами, как ребёнок в кондитерской, который хочет всё и сразу. При этом звучит словно пытается одновременно быть Джули Эндрюс и Вандой Джексон. В итоге ни один из жанров не раскрывается полностью. Чего действительно не отнять у «Pearl» так это его контрастов. Возьмём «Mercedes Benz». Эта акапельная песня — настоящий бриллиант. Никаких инструментов, никакой музыки, только голос Дженис, который звучит просто, честно и почти молитвенно. Настоящий гимн капиталистическим мечтам, исполненный с такой иронией, что хочется одновременно смеяться и аплодировать. И ту же «Buried Alive in the Blues» — инструментальная композиция, которая осталась без вокала, потому что Дженис не успела её записать до своей смерти. И знаете что? Она звучит… прекрасно. Без голоса Дженис музыка вдруг перестаёт казаться перегруженной, она дышит, она живёт. Это немного печально, но, возможно, лучшее, что случилось с этим треком, — это его незавершённость. Как итог могу сказать одно: мне не понравился ни альбом, ни исполнительница. Совершенно ничего не потерял от того, что никогда в жизни её не слушал.

Fine voice if a tad boisterous at times. Probably good in a bar with the atmosphere. Comes across as lacking depth.

2.5 stars. Singing talent and power is undeniable but the style just isn't for me. I'm sure she was incredible live but other than a few tracks here and there I'm not a Janis Joplin fan. Standout is her version popularizing "Me and Bobby McGee".

Meh. Not really into the ramblings of the late 1960's.

I didn't like the actual music much on this one. It just didn't really reach out and grab me like I thought it would. It's fairly average rock of the time and I was hoping for something ever so slightly heavier. Janis Joplin has the voice of an angel, if that angel smoked 50 a day. It's rough but it's powerful and very enjoyable. 'Mercedes Benz' is the best track as it shows off her voice with no instruments to drown it out. Shame really, was hoping for more and could have been better in my opinion.

I have played this record a couple of times today and, weirdly, none of the songs are particularly memorable? I just notice that voice doing powerful things and not much else. Apart from Mercedes Benz, which I never want to hear that again even though it's "a song of great social and political import". On the other hand, how is there an instrumental track on here?

I actually enjoyed Mercedes-Benz most of all. I can't believe Mercedes had the gall to use this in their advertising. Other than that Joplin's scratchy emphatic voice didn't do anything for me.

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

Totally understand why she was so adored. The instrumentals are fairly basic, so the vocals/lyrics carry it almost entirely. Not my jam, although I have very deep respect for Janis.

Tbh I've never listened to much Janis, didn't realize she was so bluesy. That being said, nothing here has connected with me. It's solid, musically, but her voice is probably one of those love it or hate it things and I'm in the latter category, sorry love.

Ehhhh I don’t really know what to say about this one. I feel like a lot of 70’s music transcends it’s era and time and has a universal message that still really sticks the landing (something like Electric Warrior or Ege Bamyasi) but this one never left 1971. Or even the 60’s for that matter.

Pretty average music, don't like her voice Nixon - Lambchop: Very relaxing mellow sound. Sadly, it took a turn for the worse on What Else Could It Be?, I didn't mind the falsetto before it, even slightly liked it, but I guess I reached my limit there. Wait, no, it get's better with Petrified Florist. The last two songs are pretty cool 3/5. Would consider 4/5 but don't feel like going for another round rn

Never liked Janis Joplin or more specifically her voice, some may call her voice raw or gritty I however call it grating. Knew some of the tracks (Cry Baby, Mercedes Benz). Neither music nor lyrics are in any way better than mediocre. (So your friends drive Porches, exactly why should I care) Together with the highly annoying voice I really dislike this album.

Great voice, but blues rock really doesn't do anything for me. Kristofferson's Me & Bobby McGee lifted the mood somewhat, and Mercedes Benz benefited from the lack of backing. The rest of it seemed a bit obvious and a little over-blown.

A fine rock album of its era. Joplin has a great voice and powerful personality. Don’t see this being a top 1000 album, personally.

She's got such a unique sound, but this album never really connected for me even though it's objectively quite good.

I know she’s a talent. But I can only take her one song at a time.

Guitar go hard. The blues-ey songs in my opinion give more expression and make those songs standout compared to the rest of the album. A Woman Left Lonely is a great example of this expression. Buried Alive in the Blues is a great instrumental track. The biggest hit, Me and Bobby McGee, is still good with the blues aspects, but it's just a cover and is borderline country music while missing the rock and roll feel of the rest of the album.

I grew up hearing that Janis Joplin was one of a kind, amazing, the blueist white girl ever, etc... I was excited when I seen this album come up on my list. I did recognize a few of these songs and got to hear a few that I didn't know. Some songs were great and some were not. Some songs, she showed that she was a bluey singer with a good voice but mostly not. I wouldn't forward through her song if it popped up on a playlist (unless it was the Mercedes Benz song) but I won't be seeking anything out, either. I'd do 2.5 stars if it was allowed because it's an average album.

Y'all, I just don't fucking get Janis Joplin. I owned this album for like a decade and never actually listened to it. Now that I am in the process of listening to it, I see that I made the correct decision all those years. There are plenty of bands with singers whose voices I don't enjoy, but usually I'm interested in what they're saying. Not the case here. I actually enjoy the music, and her voice works on some of the songs where there are other voices present. However, too much of it relies only on her voice, and her voice just leaves me cold. What's sad is that I think this is at least partially a production issue. I think if her voice was EQed better, there would be some richness in her tone that would be easier to appreciate 2/5

The band is great. Janis is not for me. A few songs here and there is fine, but, holy hell, does her voice grate on me. An album is way too much Janis for me. I'm glad this is anonymous, some family members would disown me for this take.

Not really my style

A couple of reviews ago, someone down there wrote that Joplin was the 70s version of Amy Winehouse. That had me worried as I got Frank a couple of albums ago and didn’t particularly enjoy listening to Winehouse’s voice. Fortunately Joplin has a less divisive singing voice in my view, although she’s clearly less talented from a composition point of view. Having said that, this was no more than OK for me. Nothing really made me want to keep listening time after time, although I managed two back to back listens. Beyond Mercedes Benz though, there’s little I’d want to listen to again. I’ve heard better versions of Me and Bobby McGee and much of the rest lacked imagination really. Perhaps back in the day it was considered cutting edge new wave stuff, but now, despite the decent playing and production, it’s rather got a dated feel for me. I was flip flopping between 3 and 2 stars - having given Frank 2. It’s more listenable to because of the voice, but less creative and I don’t know how much Joplin simply takes credit without doing that much. Harsh. And then I read a number of descriptions of her as a “sexual predator” with manipulative tendencies. We change our view of male artists based on their creepiness, so why not women? Maybe she was never in the same league as Jackson etc, but there’s a view which seems to have some credibility to it that suggests there are issues. So, that’ll be 2 then.

oh man, this might've been really fresh in the 70's, but it really doesn't do it for me. The track Mercedes Benz has some real stinky boomer energy going on, a very shallow hippie-centric view of materialism, and very little going on otherwise. Joplin's musicianship with her voice has some interesting things going on, but it's really not for me. Didn't hate it, tho

I’m probably objectively wrong here but I didn’t care for this. :( This journey has made me realize I hate anything bluesy.

Highlights: It's consistent, so take your pick. There's some interesting piano accents, some earworm guitar riffing on "Move Over" and an engaging band groove on "Half Moon." None of the songs are quite as catchy as her breakout hit "Piece of my Heart." Most importantly though, Joplin never ever lets you forget for one second what her whole scam is. Once a song gets moving, every opportunity the band has to breathe, you know she's going to have to step all over it with craven, bankrupt blackface yammering.

Gritty, passionate and raw. There's no doubt that Joplin was certainly an original but this just isn't for me so I just couldn't get into it.

I’m not a big fan of the vocal performance and unfortunately that is the main theme of this album. Janis Joplin is renowned a great singer, but I don’t get behind the overly raspy tones.

The vocal performance is undeniable, but I was expecting the music to be a bit rougher around the edges to match Janis's wild child reputation. Instead it's polished and glitzy; almost cabaret-esque in places, or 'female Rod Stewart' in others. Neither of which really does much for me. 2.5

2 Never been much of a Janis Joplin fan. I think some people have a problem with her voice, though honestly I don’t mind that as much as I just don’t find her music particularly interesting. It very much fits the time and place, but I would rather listen to other Summer of Love artists instead like Jimi Hendrix or Jefferson Airplane - though I’ll take this over Grateful Dead any day of the week. I was also surprised to learn the majority of the album consists of covers. Not that I think any less of the album because of it, but I guess I always thought of Joplin as more of a songwriter in my head. However, considering one of the original songs she did write for the album was Mercedes Benz, maybe it’s for the best. I can definitely see how this could be a vibe to hear live, but it doesn’t do much for me in album form. Favorite songs: Cry Baby, Move Over

Currently trying to clear my backlog of unrated albums, which meant forcing myself to listen to this rubbish. I already knew I disliked Janis Joplin's voice from being forced to listen to "Cheap Thrills" album. I think JPEG Mafia said it just right about Janis: sings like an old-time slave, and looks twice her age. I wouldn't mind if she sang well and looked twice her age though. But God yes, the singing is unbearably bad. "Buried alive in the blues" is the key track from this album for me because there is ZERO vocals on it. Some nice fuzzy, psychedelic guitar combined with funky organs. It's alright. I also learned that "Cry baby" is a Janis Joplin song, I'm used to hearing that one from adverts. It was familiar but not especially enjoyable. Overall, just glad I'm done with this. Bye forever Janis.

Grating doesn't begin to describe it, this voice could shred rocks. I admire the vibe and feeling, but still feels a little like Amy Winehouse or another soul music recycler, a bit hallow like why are you so upset again?

Listen to like half of it, not bad but very much not my thing.

The songs were all very similar, there was some nice guitar, but the album was forgettable. The one song that was just her singing was stupid and another one of her songs she sounded like she just finished smoking. Not a fan.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I don't like this. She's okay, but not much more than that and this has the twangy 70s sound I dislike more the more often I hear it.

Det är en väldigt trevlig röst att ha i öronen. Trots att den är rispig och inte mjuk som den traditionella(?) rösten kanske ofta är. Gällande albumets kvalite är det genomgående helt okej. Men det är inget som triggas igång inom mig när jag hör det. Utan bara en känsla av det är håller och att jag inte har något emot att lyssna på det. Jag upplever att några av de alternativa versionerna är intressantare. Det händer lite mer, det är lite mer utsvingningar och lite mer vågat. Det är väl ofta fallet med album dock, att man vill nå ut till massan och genom det så tar man inte så mycket risk med de vanliga studioversionerna. Jag tror med andra ord att det skulle trigga igång mer saker i mig om det var live.

Don’t get the hype.

Talented musician, there is no doubt there. I can see the appeal she would have, but honestly I have to say that a lot of the songs were a bit hard on the ears. 2/5 stars because there were a couple of songs I liked.

Great voice, poor songs. Starts well enough but found it pretty tedious to get through. Won’t revisit.

One song composed by Bobby Womack which is good, the rest gives me zero emotions.

She’s talented but the laziest recording engineers I have heard so far ruin anything.

She shows great range, and the lyrics are reminiscent of Dylan. I'm likely to listen to once a year.

She has passion and that blues energy. Credit there. And the story/feeling of the songs are fine. But i really find her voice repelling, and i just can't say that i want to listen to any of these songs ever again.

Not sure I am going to make it through this without forwarding . . . "Get It While You Can," the closing track, is my favorite.

I'm not really into JJ, save Bobby McGee. So, when I saw this was my mission today I wasn't thrilled. (I have had a LOT of clunkers recently). The, I heard that first song and it piqued my intrest. "Oh this is interesting and better than other Joplin so gs I am aware of." But then I heard the next 3 songs and I forgot all about that first one and the rest of the album continued to disappoint me. One star for Move Over

She had a great voice, and I get this album was of a time, but it's not for me.

It’s clear from this record that even Janis Joplin’s voice didn’t bathe either.

Listening to this album was painful for me. Now more than ever, I don't find her voice bluesy or soulful. This album was a 34 minute abyss of shrieking. Influential music doesn't mean "music for everyone."

28 - Janis Joplin - Pearl - Rating = 1 Look - this was put out the year I was born so it’s going to sound dated and it does. I don’t really like her voice, the big song on this album, “Me and Bobby McGee” is one I’ve heard and don’t really like. I don’t like the sound, there’s very little I like about the music. This is a strong no for me.

Appreciate the artistry but this album is not my cup of tea, it has too much of that country twang for me, and i wanted the album to end the entire time while listening through. You could imagine your older aunt waltzing around her living room with a glass of wine while blasting this on her radio. Found Joplin’s voice to be grating at times, and most of the songs started blending in with each other with little to no standouts. Highlights: None. Would not revisit this album at all, but i do understand why some people may like this record as it does have a few redeeming qualities. I give this a 1,5/5

A pale mimicry of established blues and soul forms, this regressive and backwards-looking record has little new to offer, especially in the context of the revolutionary transformations that were happening to soul and R&B at the start of the 1970's.

Not completely unlistenable but borderline

Nothing here is memorable to me among these jammy jams…got to the point where I was straight up annoyed by the noodling/posturing and didn’t want to finish, hence the 1. Sorry, Janis 🤷🏼‍♀️

God I cannot stand her voice. For reference Billy Corgan is a favorite of mine. This is just atrocious.

Janis has the talent and raw vocal power to be in awe of, but the music itself isn't really in my wheelhouse.

As per my Cheap Thrills review " hope I never have to listen to another band fronted by Janis Joplin The highest praise I can give it is that I could easily forget that it was on" Unfortunately none of these came true for this album

It was a good album for what it was. I don’t really like that genre and I can imagine people loving it.

I couldn’t get past her voice. Didn’t enjoy her style very much.

Pearl was okay, Janis has the vocals and the melody, but the upbead nature of the songs wasn't to my taste today.

I can see why it is highly regarded, but I don’t like it. Not a ton of variety across the album. I just don’t like screamy vocals.

Heard before: some I catch a fair amount of crap for this in my house, but Janis kind of sucks. She's got one trick - the raspy blues shout. Beyond that, her mumbly stylings sound physically painful and bum me out. I get the appeal and influence I guess, but there are so many other soul singers I'd rather listen to. My one joy on this record: Mercedes Benz is supposed to be satire (I think), but the gusto with which it is sung and re-sung lays bare the secret heart of the hippies that I can't stand. Top tracks: Me and Bobby McGee, Cry Baby, Move Over

OMG I hate it so much. Everything about her. I know people love her, but just no. She had no regard for her own life, so why should anyone care about her music.

I'm sure that from a technical standpoint Janis was a talented singer. I simply cannot endure her voice much beyond the 30 second mark. It is absolutely grating to me. Mercedes Benz is one of the worst songs ever recorded. It's a song that makes me envy the deaf. I will never understand the appeal.
