Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Brilliant, first time listening to the album in full. Raw, funky, bluesy. What a voice!

Overrated

1971: Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee

HEEYYY YEEAAAHHH

A great voice and nice bluesy-rock tracks. Liked it a lot. Though its quite clearly the covers and songs written by other people are the strongest songs - bobby mcgee, trust me

Hard to deny that this is good, but I just don't like JJ's music much. Part of it is her voice, and part of it is that it's the quintessential, I don't know, music to do cocaine to? Interested in seeing some live performance footage, I feel like I would appreciate her more that way.

I can appreciate Janis Joplin but it's not my style. Sounds pretty though.

A bit hit and miss. One or two recognisable classics

girl power funky bluesy opener slows down a lot half moon picks back up banger instrumental track weird bluesy country song sort of felt out of place mercedes benz sounds like it was recorded after she died trust me is a good near summary of the album and her career and her life as it seems she didn't have time enough to grow appaerently pearl is what she wanted people to call her before her death. The most remarkable things about this album is she was a member of the 27 club so she was young releasing this and white. 3 - decent, could stick on again.

Janis Joplin is famous for dying before her times. She has a unique voice that doesn’t hold back. Some of the songs on this album are great. Bobby McGee is a classic. Overall it’s pretty good. 6.7/10

A good album, after having only ever heard of Janis, but not what her music sounded like, it was almost a surprise in listening to it. A lot Blues-ier than I thought. Can see how her music will have influenced many that came after her. Best: Cry Baby, Mercedes Benz Worst: My Baby, Trust me

Felt very gospel-y

This is great to listen to driving around in the car with my windows down. Not as great sitting at my computer trying to work lol.

Good album, good guitarist!

It was July '72 and I was 10 years old, me and my kid sister were spending the summer at our aunt's house upstate New York. I just remember trees, fields and long evenings spent on the front porch swing, singing along to Janis Joplin while the smell of huckleberry hot cakes filled the air.

Pretty solid

Loved this album... to bad she made some bad choices

Great voice but all very samey.

Really enjoyable - only got one listen in background so need to go back

not bad, avg blues rock, great gravelly voice and solid musicianship

Janis has such a powerful voice but her style of music is not something I'm a huge fan of. I could listen to it if I was at a cook out or something but just for fun, I wouldn't chose it. Me and Bobby McGee is a classic and a few others I liked such as Cry Baby.

Pearl Jamis Joplin

A timeless classic, full of soul, 60's R&B and even funk. I'm not the biggest fan of Joplin, but I'd give this one another go. The playing is superb.

Nice album too much soul for me

Ordinary

Not really my kind of music

Heerlijk album met meerdere bekende nummers. Wil ik eigenlijk nog wel op lp.

twas aight

Forgot how much I loved this one!!

Love the overall tone and style of the album, feels like I’m in Nashville with a band jamming out. The main highlight of the album is the band that backs Janis, they are highly talented shown in the track ‘Buried Alive in The Blues’. They were strong throughout even on slower tracks like ‘A Woman Left Lonely’. This album has a lot of vibes from Jimi Hendrix to The Doors, it makes the album fun. The worst part of the album was Janis Joplin herself her vocal capability was mixed throughout it shows on the worst part of the album ‘Mercedes Benz’. Overall, I believe that Janis Joplin could be replaced and I’m interested to research if they stuck together or worked with other artists.

Pretty alright. Had honestly never heard of Janis Joplin before. Dunno if I'd listen again, but didn't dislike it.

There are parts of this album that I like a lot, but I've never been overly fond of Janis Joplin's style, and it grates on me after a while despite some of the other really enjoyable stuff. I would listen again, but it wouldn't be something for which I'd reach.

This shit was fun as hell. Just not enough stand outs. Funky though.

Too rocky for me

psychodelic rock mixed with soul and blues- not my personal prefrence of the rock gener

It was fine. Quite enjoyable but I wouldn't rush back to listen again - 2/5.

angry hippy stuff

I love the raw vocals. The southern stompish hee haw rock was tolerable, but I can only love her as a legend, not this album. 2/5

cê grita demais fia

Trailer park Aretha Franklin

Sorry. I find it boring and ever so samey.

I'm sorry but this was just not an enjoyable album for me. It's an album that mainly focuses on the vocals, but to be honest I didn't like her voice. It's a raspy and gritty country voice with a bit of drawl, and I just don't care for that sound. The first half was acceptable but unexciting bluesy rock, but the second half was a lot more country and I just did not vibe with it at all. I know this is a wild take, but I just don't care for Janis Joplin's music I guess.

Fine I guess, another strange one for a list like this...

If I hadn't heard of Janis Joplin before, I would be astounded to hear that she died at 27, at the peak of her musical career and being recognized as a generational talent in singing. Mostly because she sounds like an 80 year old smoker and it's almost unbelievable that people actually like this album.

Not my thing

Nelabai jos balsas man patinka.

That was bad. Every song sounded the same, some decent, but there were so many astronomically bad songs on here. Her voice was really annoying, average instrumentals, and no ear candy makes me give this a 2/5! 😡🤬🤯😱🫡🫠🤮.

she can sing but the music does not do it for me

This isn’t really for me. Joplin is clearly a very talented vocalist but some of this veers into wailing territory for me. Musically this didn’t interest me much either. I’m sure seeing these songs live would have been a very different experience to listening on headphones in 2026.

This prematurely aged heart has been trained to react dramatically to the word "Pearl" when it comes to music. Imagine if there were two Pearl Jam albums on here? I'm sure that bleak vision will turn out to be a clairvoyant premonition after trudging through 433 records amassing an average rating of around 2.5 so far. Yikes. Enough about the worst band ever. Yes that includes your Dad's current garage outfit. Uhh now we have Janis Joplin. Patient zero for groovy shouting soul women. I have never really given her music any airtime, so I suppose that's what this list is for. That and trying to explain that British music peaked in the 1990s. This is right off the riverboat, before the riverboats played this kind of music. This is cool riverboat music, where the captain (Emcee) wears a lei. There are worse offenders on the mighty Mississip' and honestly, she seems to really care about this, so I have to give her that. Not my taste, but a decent record for what it is. 2.5 GENRE: That growl that female American idol contestants used to do.

An album like this is hard to rate because I recognize it’s good, I do think people should listen to it, and Janis Joplin is a fascinating artist. I also really, really don’t like it. There are elements of things I like in here and I do think it belongs on the list but I actively disliked listening to it. It’s not like Venom’s Black Metal where I resent it for existing or something like Steve Albini’s work where I find it so cowardly and lacking substance, this is genuinely good music I don’t enjoy listening to. So should you listen to this before you die? Absolutely. In terms of “does this belong on the list” and “is it good” this is an easy four or a five. I’m glad I listened to it and can form a full, informed opinion but unfortunately it is a personal two.

Janis has an interesting voice. It reminds me of the modern female screamo singers. It's raspy, raw and lyrical at the same time. I liked some of the songs on this album but they all sounded similar and didn't hook me in. Not my cup of tea

Nunja.

this wasn’t what I expected it to sound like at all really and also I didn’t really like it

not my thing

overrated

I love the versatility of the folk, rock, blues, and country however I think the second leg is a lot weaker than the first. Overall I liked about half of the album. It was decent but with the last 4 being meh it’s a work I respect but won’t go back to.

Didn't like it

ahhh her voice is so grating to me

She has a beautiful voice, but the music is not my cup of tea.

I like the energy and drive of this album, but I’ll be in the minority, I can’t stand the sound of Janis Joplin’s voice. It’s grating and irritating after a few minutes, which makes it even more difficult to tolerate for an entire album. Mix that with the fact that it’s psychedelic rock that I already feel lukewarm about and you’ve got a dud in my book.

not a fan of these kinda albums found it boring and annoying but probably influential or whatever

Mercedes Benze

2 stars It was fine. I’ve listened to a bit of her stuff, never a full album before this. This hasn’t made me want to try more.

I didn’t enjoy it but I can tell it’s good

I think she’s overrated

Blues and soul stuff isn’t for me.

Hmmmm idk if i like this. Move over is quite dramatic- oh woah the piano is going crazy right now.... okay this is good- so much energy- quite bluesy but like the guitar is also flames. Okay what the fuck Cry Baby is sooo good. Thats going straight in my basket (liked songs) oooh ik its gonna do the same again, damn that chorus sounds like the heavens are opening up omds. CHILLS. Okay a woman left lonely isn't that relatable but its still good. Me and bobby gee is kinda country but i like it (its the most popular song on the album aswell) Very chill sunday afternoon vibes, i likes it a certain amount.

ik shes like the queen of rock n roll and shes super iconic but i dont like her voice that much. in this album id say my favourite is probably trust me or me and bobby mcgee.

The album was ok 2.5

I get she’s iconic and an influence but did nowt for me this album

Didn't really like it🥲

I just don´t like her vocal style. Couple of nice tracks, overall.

It was ok

0/10 bekannt 4/10 Beste Songs: Mercedes Benz, move over, cry baby

wasn’t really my vibe but i appreciate its impact

Not a huge fan of Janis. Her voice can at times be grating and her song writing has never resonated with me.

Joplin has the kinda voice you either love or hate. Unfortunately I don't love it. The band is also pretty mid - run of the mill bar boogie blues. I have gained a respect for JJ over the years...I bet she would have been great to see live. But I still don't enjoy listening to this record.

Oh lordy

I can appreciate the voice but most of the songs didn't connect with me.

Just don’t get it, never have and I guess I never will. She’s like a one trick pony and I just really don’t like that trick.

Ei tääkään resonoinu, paiskataan kagone

was niet zo mijn stijl

I liked HALF MOON but this record was kindof a slog

Screeching

Hadn't heard much Joplin before. I get why people like her but this was not for me. I didn't enjoy her voice or lyrics much

Litt for raspete, men likte da bedre enn forventa

not my personal style, but i love janis joplin and everything she stood for. she could’ve been the lead singer of led zeppelin sorry

Same as the rest of her stuff. Rubbish.

For all the hype Bobby McGee, and ...

I have tried to get into this album in the last 6 months and purchased an old 2nd hand vinyl copy in the summer, but the overiding feeling I have listening to it this morning is "when is this song going to end" and then get shocked it's only been going for 2 minutes. The kind of rock that Old Grey Whistle Test viewers used to moon over whilst dissing any music that sought to break the mold and move things forward. Her voice just doesn't do it for me (painfully shrill and strained through a meat cutter at times), which is a shame.

It was good but not my thing I think.

Her voice is not my favourite

The only times I liked Joplin's singing were in the tracks Move Over and Mercedes Benz. Her vocals tend to have a raspy, rough edge to them that is unpleasant to listen to, though it works well in Mercedes Benz. The slow ballads are bad. The way Joplin sometimes stretches syllables is annoying. In one of the songs she doesn't even sing.

Meh. Janis J has always struck me as way overrated in the scheme of things. Still feel the same. 2.5/5

A little Janis goes a long way

It just sounds all the same, not a fan but I’ll give it 2 stars because of Bobby McGee.

Sure there is talent here, but I can only take so much of the shouting vocals in my headphones My musical education began with punk and new wave - the antidote to this kind of 60's/70's MOR rock So it was never going to work for me

Never understood the fascination. People hear “raspy” or “sultry” - I hear “WTF?” I mean seriously- another junkie who benefits from sympathy at dying young. It’s just not all that.

i just couldn't get into it tbh

I cannot decide if I love her voice or hate her voice. I think it's that it sounds great during parts and bad during others. I'm having trouble rating this one.

No doubting, she is a great singer. I think the term is "raw".

Not really my taste, singing was good but just too raspy for me, instruments felt kinda basic too, honestly kinda forgettable, I couldn’t even hum you any lyric because it all faded

Never been a big fan of her voice. No apologies.

Listened a couple of times. Enjoyed a couple of songs. Bit screechy? Is that sacrilege?

Et ok album. Vil nok ikke lytte til igen.

Meh at best

Merecedez Benz is a cute, little song. I much prefer the instrumental of Buried Alive in the Blues over the actual Joplin tracks. Her voice just doesn't do it for me.

I didn't love it.

Gave this 4 good listens (thank you short album). Simply didn’t grab me or hold my attention. Heresy for some I’m sure but that’s my impression. 2/5

Oh, Janis you look like you may have been loaded for this photo shoot, too. But you sure could sing.

cry baby is transcendent, but perhaps one of my most contrarian views is that this is the inferior version of me and bobby mcgee. most of what's in between them is ffffine.

Rating: 2.3 So much yelling, overbearing blues guitar, this guy is obsessed with 70s Woodstock culture music isn’t he?

Still don’t really get her, but this wasn’t too bad.

I went through a pretty good classic rock phase in high school, so I’ve heard this before. I was curious to see if I maybe I was more ready to hear it now. Not really. This is not my thing, and I rounded up for the definitive version of Me and Bobby McGee. Cool rock/blues voice but the whole leaves me cold.

Pleasant when they are in a slow groove, but once they speed up she’s overwrought.

Didn’t love ot

It’s easy to recognize how insanely talented and influential Janis Joplin is. Maybe if I were in a different mood, time of life, or circumstance, I would enjoy this album more. But today I didn’t. With the exception of one song, this album didn’t capture my attention and I was looking forward to it being over. Of course, this is subjective, and if someone argued this is a five-star album, I couldn’t disagree. The musicianship is great. Her voice is iconic. I just didn’t enjoy it personally. Added to Library: • Me and Bobby McGee

Fine, nothing noteworthy for me

I honestly think I prefer Bette Midler in The Rose

A couple of classic soulful rock ballads in this album, both of which are enjoyable and feel like a throwback. “Cry Baby” is the highlight for me, with a couple of other strong tracks, but overall the album doesn’t do too much for me.

Powerful, but screechy. Great cover of Me and Bobby Magee

Lyrics were interesting and had a strong messages. Not really my kind of music though.

It's not exactly my style, but it's good nonetheless

Boring

A real mixed bag of songs here. Some I really like, some average, almost all of them ruined by her wailing voice!

Mid album, nije mi se toliko svidio

Overall, it wasn't my favorite. Its entirely a decent album that showcases Janis's vocal abilities, but I didn't find any of the songs too enjoyable for my tastes. I just don't think I would ever hop back into this album, and even the most popular song on it (Me and Bobby McGee) was not as good as I had hoped. 2.5/5.

never been a JJ fan, although I do appreciate. The radio stations ruin it for some tracks in general, Bobby McGee one of them.

There were a few songs in here, like Mercedes Benz that tapped squarely into my image of Joplin. But most of it wasn't very memorable.

I feel like this list is very wrong. Top albums to listen to before I die and a lot of them being not that good this is one of them. Now I didn’t dislike it but it was rly nothing and would feel the exact same if I didn’t listen to Pearl. Her voice was quite amazing but then she starts like crying screaming making it hard to listen too. And god help me Mercedes Benz felt like nails on a chalk board. A lot of the songs weren’t bad and even good I must say so this is a solid 5.1/10 2.5/5

Eh didn't really enjoy it. 2/5

liked the mercedes benz song

I genuinely don't get the appeal. Lots of people here praising her voice, but although it's undeniably powerful, it's also pretty hard for me to listen to. The grating tone in Mercedes Benz is awful. This is musically a bit better than Cheap Thrills though; the band is pretty tight. A higher two.

blues rock, nice gode slagere på albumet her

I get why JJ got famous but this doesn't really appeal to me honestly. Her vocals are impressive but stylistically I find them pretty grating. The songwriting is average at best imo

Janis Joplin’s “Pearl” showcases her talent, but sounds more like collection of songs than album. Makes sense given the posthumous release. The backing band is great, and the name “Full Tilt Boogie Band” is kickass. Despite Janis Joplins talent and influence this is not my style at all. I have no doubt it was more impactful to those hearing it before the decades worth of music made afterwards. It all sounds the same to me, the highlights being “Cry Baby”, “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Mercedes Benz” (which I remember my Mom singing, as I inherited my love of Porsches from my Dad).

I used to love this album , now it's not that interesting anymore.

Good singing, but random assortment of songs.

I know that she’s an icon and she absolutely deserves a spot on this list and all of her flowers. That being said, I did not like this at all. The wailing went on way too long in every song and got really grating. It was not for me at all

Vanity projects seldom work for me. Janis was a force on stage with a good band. This is just slop.

This album has notes of funk, blues, and rock. Her voice is raspy, but her delivery is strong and emotional. Move over Me and Bobby McGee Trust me 2/5

I've never liked her voice. I've tried this album before and bounced off of it. I liked some of the songs with less vocals this time.

It's ok. Good potential but i found it kinda soulless

Musically, this was pretty nice. And vocally, she pulled in some of her shrill shrieks so that was better. 2.5 stars

She's an amazing singer. It's just too bad she only wrote part of one song on the entire album.

En cover-platta. Bästa spår: Bobby Womacks Trust Me.

The power and passion are certainly evident in her vocals but it is pleasant to listen to? Not for me. Her voice is kind of annoying and seems to reflect the hard living that caused her to die while she was still in her 20's. Considered a great by many, she's just not my thing.

Sure, it's a classic but I just can't with the insane wailing. If people could step outside their Haight-Ashbury mind castles and listen to this objectively, I think the ratings would be lower. Or maybe I'm just biased against screamy singers.

Didn't convince me. Not my music style though. 4/10

Got her confused with Joan Jett and was low-key disappointed.

not really my type of blues rock or anything. sounds pleasant, a lot of very retro organs. Kris Kristofferson does a much better Me and Bobby McGee. shame she passed away so young. deserves to be one of the 1001? ehhh probably? maybe. wouldn't be one of my first choices though

This was a big disappointment. It's just utterly boring, like if you took the most uninteresting songs from led zeppelin's career

Music is regular, nothing special blues. Her voice is kind of interesting and enjoyable at the beginning but got pretty annoying toward the end. Wouldn't say I'm a fan.

Didn’t grab me

Just not for me

I really should love Janis Joplin, but I don't. I love her voice, I love her social justice issues and I love her lyrics. But I just don't like her and I don't know why. Sorry, Janice.

i think i can see how good was it in the 70s. I can imagine some of the songs used in movies as iconic songs for some scenes (maybe wild west scenes or something) as an iconic touch to the movie or the game. Oh maybe the show Fallout. well, not for me

Sorry queen Janis. did not love.

Janis Joplin, for me, is a prime example of a supremely talented artist that does literally nothing for me. Clearly an incredible voice, but in a style and wedded to music that I couldn’t wait to stop listening to. Sorry Janis, I wish your life could have been an easier one.

2 sterne

20% banger

I love her, but not that much for a full album that doesn't sound coherent. Sorry Janis!

Very good if a little dated, still a great voice to listen to.

Reminds me of any college/university girl that thinks they can sing but can’t

Enjoyed the start of the album, Janis has a cool voice. Lost interest towards the end. Not for me.

Maybe worth visiting as an artifact as a different time, but it's hard not to see Joplin as someone who lifted a soul / R&B vocal style and did it over more straightforward rock. Maybe it was revolutionary at the time, but I don't think it aged as well as folks wish it did.

Surprisingly this didn't catch my fancy

Not terrible, not good, but at least it’s short

Couple goodies

Fine voice if a tad boisterous at times. Probably good in a bar with the atmosphere. Comes across as lacking depth.

2.5 stars. Singing talent and power is undeniable but the style just isn't for me. I'm sure she was incredible live but other than a few tracks here and there I'm not a Janis Joplin fan. Standout is her version popularizing "Me and Bobby McGee".

Not for me

Added 1 liked song

Meh. Not really into the ramblings of the late 1960's.

I didn't like the actual music much on this one. It just didn't really reach out and grab me like I thought it would. It's fairly average rock of the time and I was hoping for something ever so slightly heavier. Janis Joplin has the voice of an angel, if that angel smoked 50 a day. It's rough but it's powerful and very enjoyable. 'Mercedes Benz' is the best track as it shows off her voice with no instruments to drown it out. Shame really, was hoping for more and could have been better in my opinion.

Not for me. Some good songs but overall not a fan.

Her voice is a little annoying. Kind of sounds like a white lady trying to do black church music that smoked a loooooot of cigarettes

Not groovy [4], but good!

Not my vibe, maybe i could get used to it

Impressive stuff. Especially that voice. The band is quite gritty in its funkiness but can't quite match that power. I have played this record a couple of times today and, weirdly, none of the songs are particularly memorable? I just notice that voice doing powerful things and not much else. Apart from Mercedes Benz, which I never want to hear that again even though it's "a song of great social and political import". On the other hand, how is there an instrumental track on here?

I actually enjoyed Mercedes-Benz most of all. I can't believe Mercedes had the gall to use this in their advertising. Other than that Joplin's scratchy emphatic voice didn't do anything for me.

Homie... Have you been eating that sandwich again?

Awesome voice, but too much hippie for my liking

Great voice of course. But pretty boring music.

She was a great singer, but I’m realizing that I don’t like her voice

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

Never got her appeal. Still don't.

Really cool album, love the band, love the singing, but for me it is a sometimes food and a full album of this sound is a bit much. Still, generally really cool sound.

Never digged it, still i don't

Unique

Nothing really stood out but it was cool finding out where the Mercedes Benz song came from

Not my cup of tea

Classic singer with a great voice but not my cup of tea.

I'm pretty sure my parents had this record. She has a great voice. Pretty funky music. Pretty rockin'. But, not really a fan.

Totally understand why she was so adored. The instrumentals are fairly basic, so the vocals/lyrics carry it almost entirely. Not my jam, although I have very deep respect for Janis.

She is significantly overrated.

excellent album, not for me

Tbh I've never listened to much Janis, didn't realize she was so bluesy. That being said, nothing here has connected with me. It's solid, musically, but her voice is probably one of those love it or hate it things and I'm in the latter category, sorry love.

Ehhhh I don’t really know what to say about this one. I feel like a lot of 70’s music transcends it’s era and time and has a universal message that still really sticks the landing (something like Electric Warrior or Ege Bamyasi) but this one never left 1971. Or even the 60’s for that matter.

(lol goddamn, ai) While Janis Joplin's undeniable charisma and energetic performances are legendary, her posthumous album Pearl falls short musically. At a disappointing 2 out of 5 stars, the songwriting and arrangements feel uneven. Some tracks, like the bluesy rocker "Move Over," showcase Joplin's signature powerful vocals, but others meander without direction. It's important to note that this critique is solely focused on the music itself. Joplin's tragic death shortly after the album's release adds another layer of poignancy, but doesn't elevate the musical merit. Now, for fans of Joplin's voice, this album might hold more weight. However, it's well documented that Joplin's heavy smoking and heroin use significantly damaged her vocal cords. This is especially evident on some of Pearl's rawer tracks where her signature belt seems strained. While it adds a certain rawness to the music, it's a reminder of the potential health risks associated with substance abuse.

I just don’t enjoy the raspy tone of Janis Joplin’s voice, rendering the whole album not pleasant for me.

Pretty average music, don't like her voice Nixon - Lambchop: Very relaxing mellow sound. Sadly, it took a turn for the worse on What Else Could It Be?, I didn't mind the falsetto before it, even slightly liked it, but I guess I reached my limit there. Wait, no, it get's better with Petrified Florist. The last two songs are pretty cool 3/5. Would consider 4/5 but don't feel like going for another round rn

i bet if i smoked 1,000 cigarettes id sound like this

Mercedes benz

Never liked Janis Joplin or more specifically her voice, some may call her voice raw or gritty I however call it grating. Knew some of the tracks (Cry Baby, Mercedes Benz). Neither music nor lyrics are in any way better than mediocre. (So your friends drive Porches, exactly why should I care) Together with the highly annoying voice I really dislike this album.

Great voice, but blues rock really doesn't do anything for me. Kristofferson's Me & Bobby McGee lifted the mood somewhat, and Mercedes Benz benefited from the lack of backing. The rest of it seemed a bit obvious and a little over-blown.

A fine rock album of its era. Joplin has a great voice and powerful personality. Don’t see this being a top 1000 album, personally.

Wasn't all that keen the first time around...

einige wenige „pearls“ in einem 70er-album ..

Mostly incoherent wailing. Music was fun at times though.

Not my cup of tea

Not a fan of her raspy voice.

I think her legacy is greatly over-exaggerated by her death. These all sound like similar blues tunes and I’m not even a big fan of the voice. Bobby McGee is the standout and I might even like Kristofferson’s version better these days

It was alright. I wasnt feeling this genre of music so maybe that was it. The hits were good, but the other songs were mid

loud, angry music - 2/5

She has a distinct voice. I don't think I would pick this to listen to again though. Ultimately this was forgettable to me. Review of Reviews: People like her voice and give this music a lot of recognition. Though she was very young when she died its a shame we didn't get to see her ride out her career. Best Track: Buried Alive in the Blues. I liked this one the best..

I think I'd love JJ if I was into that style of music. Few tracks are ok but quickly gets tiresome, despite the short runtime. 2.5*

Man I remember the Mercedes Benz song from this album.

Not really my style of music or vocals, but boy can Janis belt it out. Very impressive. Fav tracks: Cry Baby, Buried Alive In the Blues

She's got such a unique sound, but this album never really connected for me even though it's objectively quite good.

I know she’s a talent. But I can only take her one song at a time.

Guitar go hard. The blues-ey songs in my opinion give more expression and make those songs standout compared to the rest of the album. A Woman Left Lonely is a great example of this expression. Buried Alive in the Blues is a great instrumental track. The biggest hit, Me and Bobby McGee, is still good with the blues aspects, but it's just a cover and is borderline country music while missing the rock and roll feel of the rest of the album.

I recognize that this is good, it's just not for me

Can’t knock it. Just not my cup of tea

I grew up hearing that Janis Joplin was one of a kind, amazing, the blueist white girl ever, etc... I was excited when I seen this album come up on my list. I did recognize a few of these songs and got to hear a few that I didn't know. Some songs were great and some were not. Some songs, she showed that she was a bluey singer with a good voice but mostly not. I wouldn't forward through her song if it popped up on a playlist (unless it was the Mercedes Benz song) but I won't be seeking anything out, either. I'd do 2.5 stars if it was allowed because it's an average album.

I never cared much for Janis Joplin. Her voice sounds like a semi-musical yelling to me.

This was ok. Nothing special to me, but reasonably enjoyable. 2.5/5

Def like the instrumental in the bg but I think I need to give time for the vocals to grow on me.

Y'all, I just don't fucking get Janis Joplin. I owned this album for like a decade and never actually listened to it. Now that I am in the process of listening to it, I see that I made the correct decision all those years. There are plenty of bands with singers whose voices I don't enjoy, but usually I'm interested in what they're saying. Not the case here. I actually enjoy the music, and her voice works on some of the songs where there are other voices present. However, too much of it relies only on her voice, and her voice just leaves me cold. What's sad is that I think this is at least partially a production issue. I think if her voice was EQed better, there would be some richness in her tone that would be easier to appreciate 2/5

The band is great. Janis is not for me. A few songs here and there is fine, but, holy hell, does her voice grate on me. An album is way too much Janis for me. I'm glad this is anonymous, some family members would disown me for this take.

Her voice is truly iconic. I recognized that, even though I didn't recognize any of the songs.

Not my favorite in general but some of her best work.

The girl could sing - no dispute there. Otherwise and unremarkable album.

Not really my style

A couple of reviews ago, someone down there wrote that Joplin was the 70s version of Amy Winehouse. That had me worried as I got Frank a couple of albums ago and didn’t particularly enjoy listening to Winehouse’s voice. Fortunately Joplin has a less divisive singing voice in my view, although she’s clearly less talented from a composition point of view. Having said that, this was no more than OK for me. Nothing really made me want to keep listening time after time, although I managed two back to back listens. Beyond Mercedes Benz though, there’s little I’d want to listen to again. I’ve heard better versions of Me and Bobby McGee and much of the rest lacked imagination really. Perhaps back in the day it was considered cutting edge new wave stuff, but now, despite the decent playing and production, it’s rather got a dated feel for me. I was flip flopping between 3 and 2 stars - having given Frank 2. It’s more listenable to because of the voice, but less creative and I don’t know how much Joplin simply takes credit without doing that much. Harsh. And then I read a number of descriptions of her as a “sexual predator” with manipulative tendencies. We change our view of male artists based on their creepiness, so why not women? Maybe she was never in the same league as Jackson etc, but there’s a view which seems to have some credibility to it that suggests there are issues. So, that’ll be 2 then.

Amazing voice but not rlly my kinda music

I recognize she’s supposed to be a great who died tragically young. I don’t enjoy her voice in general and definitely not a whole album of it.

I didn't really care about this album. I do think she has talent, but this style of music just doesn't do much for me. I do think the album cover is nice though. My favourite song was Buried Alive in the Blues.

2/5 en kuuntelisi toiste

Haluaisin tykätä uranuurtajasta, mut en vain pidä.

Litt for raspete, men likte da bedre enn forventa

oh man, this might've been really fresh in the 70's, but it really doesn't do it for me. The track Mercedes Benz has some real stinky boomer energy going on, a very shallow hippie-centric view of materialism, and very little going on otherwise. Joplin's musicianship with her voice has some interesting things going on, but it's really not for me. Didn't hate it, tho

I’m probably objectively wrong here but I didn’t care for this. :( This journey has made me realize I hate anything bluesy.

Highlights: It's consistent, so take your pick. There's some interesting piano accents, some earworm guitar riffing on "Move Over" and an engaging band groove on "Half Moon." None of the songs are quite as catchy as her breakout hit "Piece of my Heart." Most importantly though, Joplin never ever lets you forget for one second what her whole scam is. Once a song gets moving, every opportunity the band has to breathe, you know she's going to have to step all over it with craven, bankrupt blackface yammering.

Some good guitar, opener has a nice hook, otherwise difficult to get through (just can't get into her voice) * Move Over

I am never going to get Janis Joplin.

Gritty, passionate and raw. There's no doubt that Joplin was certainly an original but this just isn't for me so I just couldn't get into it.

This album features a mix of original songs and covers, including Joplin's iconic rendition of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee," which became her only number one hit. The song does a good job of capturing the essence of Joplin's musical style, blending rock, blues, and country influences to create a sound that is uniquely her own. Throughout the album, Joplin's voice plays the main character, with her raspy, soulful vocals imbuing each song with a sense of urgency. She sings about love, loss, and longing with a rawness and vulnerability that still resonates with listeners today. The production on "Pearl" is simple, allowing Joplin's voice to take center stage. The band, which includes musicians such as keyboardist Ken Pearson and guitarist John Till, provides backing that complements Joplin's vocals without ever risking to overshadow them. I’m not a big fan of the vocal performance and unfortunately that is the main theme of this album. Janis Joplin is renowned a great singer, but I don’t get behind the overly raspy tones.

The vocal performance is undeniable, but I was expecting the music to be a bit rougher around the edges to match Janis's wild child reputation. Instead it's polished and glitzy; almost cabaret-esque in places, or 'female Rod Stewart' in others. Neither of which really does much for me. 2.5

i generally don’t dig this kind of shaggy blues pastiche

Never been a big fan, but also never actively hated her music.

2 Never been much of a Janis Joplin fan. I think some people have a problem with her voice, though honestly I don’t mind that as much as I just don’t find her music particularly interesting. It very much fits the time and place, but I would rather listen to other Summer of Love artists instead like Jimi Hendrix or Jefferson Airplane - though I’ll take this over Grateful Dead any day of the week. I was also surprised to learn the majority of the album consists of covers. Not that I think any less of the album because of it, but I guess I always thought of Joplin as more of a songwriter in my head. However, considering one of the original songs she did write for the album was Mercedes Benz, maybe it’s for the best. I can definitely see how this could be a vibe to hear live, but it doesn’t do much for me in album form. Favorite songs: Cry Baby, Move Over

Posmiertne gransko

Can’t stand her

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: A few nice tracks with very solid vocals but overall just isn’t my cup of tea Favourite song: Track 9 - Trust Me

American Idol Voice: It's a no for me dawg.

Not for me, I can see the appeal but just not my vibe

This reminded me of the time I was found shagging a watermelon in the bathroom of a Wagamamas.

I am sure her voice is technically excellent but it is far too much for me to listen to for more than a couple of songs.

I actually can't stand Joplin's voice and was not a fan of this album or her music. She sings like an old lady. 5/10.

Yeah. Having this after led Zeppelin makes me keen to hear something more complex than old blues rock. Janis can sing though.
