Eh, not bad but not good.

Holy crap, I like funk! Who knew? Can hear so much modern music when I listen to it - so many things have sampled from this album or were influenced by it. I wish I'd discovered Parliament earlier and will definitely be exploring the rest of their catalogue.

Good representation of the funk genre. Fun, puts a bounce in your step and a smile on your face. Love he horns mixed with the bass rhythm.

Meh... not my style

How can anyone not like this? Guaranteed to lift your mood. Everything about this record is exactly as it should be and the production is 10/10. Bootsy Collins in particular (of course) is a highlight throughout and I like that the bass seems to be brought out front a little instead of being buried in the mix. But that's also just common for funk I suppose. Absolutely some of the best bass lines of all time come from Bootsy and this album seems to showcase him all over. It's too bad there aren't really mainstream funk bands anymore. I feel like the funk genre spent a relatively short time in the limelight and it's too bad it died out.

Pure energy which is able to warm you up even when it's -10 cold at night and are stoned and far from your bed. Great synths sound.

Likes: Timeless blend of funk and soul never gets old. Safe to say also the samples on this album helped shape hip hop culture on the west coast. Bootsy Collins... George Clinton... nuff said. Textures and use of sound as an instrument is always appreciated. Dislike: Too short.

Some good ol fashion funk

An absolute delight from the very start. I'm a sucker for a concept album, and FUNKY SPACE SHIPS/ALIENS? Hell yes. One of those albums where I *feel* like I've heard a lot of it before, but probably haven't, but I have heard all the music it's influenced, and the artists that have sampled this album. I think the only George Clinton associated album I've actually heard before is "Maggot Brain". But maybe it's time for me to listen to more funk, cause I'm absolutely loving this. nevermind, i definitelty know "Give Up The Funk" lol Overall, quite the fun listen, I can see myself returning to this one, does not blow me away enough to be a full on five bagger but I think it's a very solid 4.

Amazing groove foundations and a masterclass on building over a groove, from the bass line to the horn section. Great melodies that get completely stuck in your head, full of funkiness.

My wife loves it when I play Handcuffs as loud as possible.

I dig it. Almost James Brown meests Earth, Wind and Fire meets Pink Floyd. Upbeat, funky and quirky.

Really cohesive and easy to listen to all the way through without noticing how quickly the time is passing. A lot of familiarity with the beats suggests that it’s heavily sampled, which is not surprising given how catchy it is. Can’t help but make the funk face and bob your head.

Too instrument heavy for me

um SO FUCKING COOL. love the organisation of the tracks, just enjoyed it from bottom to top, and never got bored. will be saving and listening to on repeat. actually brought me out of my bad mood. i feel like i liked each track so much that i cant decide my favourite, will report back on eighth listen or something .

10/10 i really loved this album! i’ve never tapped into funk properly so this was my first proper introduction to the sub-genre. this album was so upbeat and fun, full of soul, jazz and more! i loved the concept of your radio being hijacked by these ET beings who just want to play you some feel good music, it really elevated things for me. also the lyrics revolving around the music instead of vice versa was a nice decision, encouraging you to focus on the beat at hand. it was soooo enjoyable seeing all the carefree lyrics here! i genuinely have no criticisms here, every track was flawless, a very easy 10/10

Funk mag ich nicht

The only song I knew going in was "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)", which is a great funk song, something that got a fair amount of exposure back in the day. I have a digital copy of this one. But I hadn't ever heard the whole album, so I was pretty interested when this came up today. This is a pretty solid album in the realm of funk, most of it is quite good. I was groovin' the whole time. That said, "Give Up The Funk" is the only song that's really memorable, and the "radio announcements" part of the opening song weren't my favorite. I think this will deserve some additional listens before I make a final judgement, but I'll give it a conditional 4/5

Me and Emma vibed to funk in a museum-like home. Glad I saved it for a post-holiday treat with the sweetest girl by my side.

Surely the funkiest album ever recorded. Can't say it's a genre I listen to a lot (or ever) but they've completely met the brief. It was fun but I probably wouldn't say good, quite repetitive, any of the tracks accomplishes everything you need. Except the last one which was mostly synth based farting. Breezed by won't return, 2.5.

Difficult one this. It's obviously funky as balls, and there is an inherent coolness that comes with that.... But would I actually ever listen to it? The names of the tracks are funny and interesting. I can't help but think of the mighty boosh episode with the funk though and it's making this seem silly. I did quite enjoy it though. Джордж Клинтон конечно супер хорош, но у меня ощущение что я послушал рок оперу Тодда Чавиза, это реально душно. тип в 1975 наверное я бы сидел в ахуевозе, но сейчас эти кринжовые космо синты не слишком впечатляют) инструментал тут конечно хороший, это всё музыка ещё из тех времён когда было модно делать сложно и по 7 минут. много интересных фишек, а в ласт треке вообще напердели мне в уши, за это отдельное спасибо. в целом это интересно, тут в звуке всегда что то происходит, на Unfunky UFO я даже плотно так завайбился и добавил трек в плейлист. но в целом прослушал и ладно, потраченного времени не жаль, но вряд ли я к этому вернусь. короче уважаемо оценка - 7/10

The GOAT of funk music in my opinion. Parliament lays their funk on thick, yet smooth. Mousse-like. You know exactly what you’re getting and it’s exactly what you wanted. Give Up The Funk is arguably the most iconic funk song that ever funked. This album is celebratory and proud, it’s fun and funky, and honestly, it’s just a whole ass vibe. It is a revelation to its genre. The only thing I dislike is the bloated track lengths. Which I know is common for the genre, I just appreciate brevity in music more than exploratory, jamming loops.

She's So Unusual

For me great music takes you to a different place, a state of mind. Mothership Connection does that. I got totally into it, just changed my thinking for the better in the middle of a semi-trouble-filled day. The opposite of the seriousness of Radiohead or Gracelend (Paul Simon) but equally excellent. Has a good sense of humor. I loved it.

This shit slaps.

I wanted to say, "incomparable," but even George Clinton would be more flattered by direct comparisons to Sly Stone and James Brown and to Motown. Come for the rhythm - for the syncopated in-betweens and the hard, precise thunk of the whole section when the bar comes back to ONE. Generations of bass players and drummers have studied this work (Bootsy Collins and Cordell Mosson on bass, Tiki Fulwood, Jerome Brailey, Collins and Gary Cooper all rotating through percussion roles). Everything is good. The songs can go on a bit, but the impulse to move with these rhythmic patterns is strong enough that you may not notice. Just as you may not notice in Give Up The Funk when the whole band starts singing 'ga ga goo-ga' over and over to the rhythm. The various parts diverge and reunite around that propulsive hit on the first beat of every bar in a manner (lifted from the godfather, Brown) that is at once mesmerizing, fascinating, engrossing, dense and accessible. Funk is a genre music. It is a thoughtfully constructed tradition built upon Motown and the Blues and bebop jazz but in a way sufficiently coherent as to have its own frames and strictures. It is recognizably borrowed from, having transcended being an offshoot of other things. This is funk in pure, uncut form: the raw, elemental source. Think what you want of the silliness, the psychedelia, the sci-Fi influences but come open-minded to embrace the beat. Like whisky or coffee, you may find you prefer its flavours watered down a little (funk metal? pop-funk? samples of The Gap Band throughout hip-hop? it's all there), but you should try the genuine article at least once if you love music. Funk is an oft-referenced influence by numerous musicians but a somewhat forgotten genre for contemporary fans and writers. Give it a visit: it is an utterly infectious, jubilant, kinetic musical style that deserves the reverence associated with the likes of Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie. This is as important as the Beatles. A masterwork. Parliament is a well from which we continue to draw but do not acknowledge enough.

It’s good! It’s funky!

This is an excellent album, but I think I got it here a bit late on the list. Getting such an influential album after listening to many albums influenced by it is much less impressive. It's an album that deserves attention, but listening to it with some contextualization is mandatory.

Thoughts before listening: I don't know what's on this album but I'm sure it's great. I know this is one of Parliament's most celebrated records so I'm excited to listen. Review: Yep...this is awesome. This is the definition of funk music (as they remind you over and over again) and a lot of it is very recognizable since its been sampled so many times in hip hop songs. Mothership Connection and Give Up the Funk are the best songs, but I enjoyed the whole album. Some of the talking was annoying and there is definitely a lot of repetition to the songs, but this is still a fantastic record.

Weirdly the opening track is both the first that comes to mind when thinking of this album, and yet one of the weaker big songs here for me. I went into this knowing I liked it, somewhat peturbed by the first track not hitting much (perhaps due to the lengthier repetitions and spoken word elements), and then immediately pushed back into my confident enjoyment of the record as songs like Star Child and Give Up the Funk rolled in. The latter in particular is a fantastic song. It's a very easy listen, a very fun listen, and probably the first album i've received so far that really feels like it deserves to be heard before you die.

Awesome funky goodness here with our finally-arrived first album from Parliament. I really love the groove of this. "Give Up the Funk" has always been a favorite, so it was great to hear the rest of the album. How I wish I could see the entrance of the mothership in their shows! (I may have grimaced a few times at the lyrics of "Handcuffs," but it's supposed to be hyperbole, right?") This put a glide in my stride and a dip in my hip! Yes!

This is a funky good time. Handcuffs might not be so fun --- I think it's supposed to be funny maybe? I'm choosing to interpret it so that it's the woman who wants to be handcuffed and the man's not into it at all but he's game to do it if it's what she likes. That works, right? Otherwise, very fun.

Why do they spend 6 minutes demanding the funk?! They are the goddamn funk. Great fun from the most effortless band in show business. Parliament has an amazing combination of exuberant musicianship, total mastery of a genre and complete comitment to goofiness. There's a wide cast of singers chiming in alongside George Clinton for a wild poly-vocal performance, but really this album is all about the deep interstellar bass grooves endlessly adorned with horns riffs, guitar stabs, and an unlimited supply of elecric pianos, organs, and synth licks. The bass tones are so good - clean and precise with a magnificent pop and then suddenly as sythny and bizarrely distorted as a malfunctioning robot melting down at a disco in Spaceballs.

Remember when you could enter a secret code and play as George Clinton on NBA jam? That was cool. The hits keep on coming. I was quite thrilled to have Parliament do it to me in the ears. Easily the most fun album we’ve listened to so far. The world is a better place thanks to the imprint Parliament has left on it. I mean…what would PCU even have been without their cameo appearance? Anyhoo, make my funk the P-Funk.

Damn P-Funk, can't belive I only just now heard of their existence. Each song just makes you want to move to it. You recognize so many elements from newer music, truly a staple for generations of musicians to come after. Funny to see some lingo still being used in rap today!

Pretty fun! And I can see a direct influence on the Mighty Boosh funk stuff.

I sometimes think funk only exists for the funking puns. It is funking great, though. Ahead of its time, more sophisticated and more subtle than I expected. Solid, solid funky times.

Listened Before? Yes Album Art: 5 / 5 - what's not to love? Oh I fuck with some P-Funk. Hard not to immediately think of The Roach hearing the intro, but this song stands alone just fine. All the bass warble; all the drugs. Unfunky UFO is a jam that I never get tired of. Such groove, much wow. Give Up The Funk is a classic. Just an open-ended drum and bass jam with synth sprinkled in. Remember hearing this one on just about every road trip with my parents when they played 100% Funk. Pour one for the Thumpasorous People. Buttery bass propelling the song with flatulence-esq backing synths for the opening section and incoherent chanting throughout the rest. Pretty much quintessential Parliament. While I generally prefer the Funkadelic era (a la Maggot Brain), this is a solid entry into the PFunk catalog. Less jammy and spacious than the early Funkadelic work, this album puts the bass, horns, and synth at the forefront and connects on so many levels. I was in the groove for 38 straight minutes. I appreciate funk as much as the next guy, but nothing about this album really stood out to me. It was a solid album that had me bumping at points, but overall it was pretty homogenous. Good not great.

Started off so funkilicious with P-Funk and Mothership Connection. Slowed down a bit, but then was not expecting to have a song hat I knew with Give Up the Funk that song always plays hard. This album started to lose me in the middle but then funked itself right back up into a 4. I really want to know what a Thumpasorus Peoples are and why they were just brown noting in my ear the whole song.

Didn't realize I was going to funk town this morning but I am not upset by it. Only song I knew was Give Up The Funk but every song was pretty legit even though they started melding into each other (partially blame that on work, fuck work). Also what the hell sound is happening in Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples it sounds like shitting noises. Either way I see myself coming back to some of these jams for sure.

This was very fun. Really just a good time to listen to it. Some of the songs verge on repetitive, but the vibes throughout are very good. I don't think I'll return to this on my own, but whenever I encounter Parliament in the future I'll know that I'm in for a good time.

Funky but a lot of needless talking

A unique and immersive expression of funk! My unpopular opinion is that this one's better than Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain." A perfect album from one of the best and most original bands of the '70s.

This was great fun to listen to and the 41 minutes flew by. I will probably go back to this again, even if it's just to try and pick up more of the samples used by other artists. I picked up a few on my first listen, but there's probably more there. Funk isn't really my thing, or this would be an easy 5-stars. It was great, but not quite perfect enough for a perfect rating.

For some reason it never occurred to me, growing up at least, that entire albums of Funk existed. My only experience was generally one-off bits in TV shows or movies. This album was almost unbelievably funky, especially compared to anything I'd heard of this genre in the past. There was a relatively snoozy track or two, but I can't imagine a person existing that wouldn't have a good time listening to this album. Less my style but I like the approach and definetly some groove on there

The funk, the whole funk, and nothing but the funk. Was a fun listen, but the songs all seemed to be about the subject of funk itself, with no other content. They weren't really about anything other than funk itself, how funky the band perceive itself to be, and how they are delivering funk to the audience. Still, it was enjoyable enough to listen to, and I'd relisten if the mood struck.

It’s a classic funk album. It has some good, but repetitive songs. If I were to listen to this again, I think only 1 or 2 songs would be enough to say I listened to the whole album.

A funky 38 min trip to outer space. Accompanied by some of the founding fathers of funk. Interesting story telling aspect to the album.

Only had 1 or 2 songs that I thought were any good. A lot of the songs felt repetitive as well. It might appeal more to people who really like funk, but I wasn't a big fan

Very good, groovy and funky music, the extended voiceovers are a bit too much, though, and it's also a bit repetitive. Otherwise, 70s funk rocks!

Fuuuunky! Wasn't expecting this genre today, but it is 100% welcome. Give up the funk is iconic. It's a nice feeling to throw on an album not knowing anything, then realizing "We want the funk" was on here. This album's use of backup vocals and echoes made me think of D'Angelo's "Black Messiah" - love that sound. Likely not going to be in my rotation, but love to explore!

Honestly most of this album sounds like generic 70s funk to me. But Mothership connection and give up the funk are truly awesome. Maybe the rest of the album will grow on me, but maybe they're just a greatest hits kind of band rather than an album one. Having said that the musicianship is flawless and there's many interesting sounds throughout. I cant decide if its a a synth on the last track or its a engineer stood outside a toilet stool with mic on the worse day of George Clinton's life. I'd give the album 3 stars as a whole but the two songs i mentioned earn it an extra star.

Wow, where to begin. This album blew my mind. I enjoyed basically every track, and the way they flowed together made it even better. I have always been aware of Parliament, but had pretty much only ever heard "Give Up The Funk." Listening to the full album gave me a huge appreciation for the skill and soul on display. Highlights: P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up) - There's a hilarious deejay bit going on throughout the track. The music is fantastic. Unfunky UFO - Holy Bass, Batman. I had to listen to this again immediately after finishing the first time. Give Up The Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker) - Basically everyone knows this song. Excellent track that 100% deserves its notoriety. Night of the Thumpasorous Peoples - This track bops. Funky caveman stuff going on. Lowlights: Not much, tbh. There's some hilariously offensive lyrics on this album, but anyone that gets mad about that is probably a loser. Final Thoughts: This is a great album packed full of talented performers and killer funky beats. If you don't like this album I assume you hate fun. Bootsy Collins is a god of Bass and makes every track a dance party.

I love funk. Maybe didn't have any major radio hits I'd know decades later. But solid the whole way thru & got the sound

Funkiest ever. Best vibe ever, the funky rhythm section sits so perfectly with the bass singing-narrating, the singing is just an instrument used for a rhythmic melodic function. What they do they do the best.

Nothing really compares to it. This is the peak of funk music and of Parliament. It is decadent and absurd and weird, but the grooves are so great and the albums ability to move (or remove) you is incredible. I absolutely love it. 5/5 Listen to it frequently

Fun album. The songs outside of the biggest hits were ok but still enjoyable. The auto generated spotify playlist after the album was a fun listen too. Rick James, Average White Band, The Jackson 5, etc...

Solid funk album. I don't love it like I love Maggot Brain, but solid none-the-less.

Unfunky UFO is great. Had no idea give up the funk was by this artist. Fun album, some songs were pretty similar though.

Retro funky music... Quality is clear, full spectrum, bass is good for 70s recording. Too much talking.

epic 1001 albums moment

Mothership Connection forces me to examine what it is to be locked in a groove. This is a party record that has guests nervously looking at each other as they dance, each wondering if they're still on the same song, and if that song is ever going to stop. There's a lot of laughter, a tremendous bowl of punch, and gallons of helium going around, but there's this hovering fear that these garrulous hosts have locked the front door, and you can't help but notice that the chairs have been taken away, and new hosts keep entering from hidden entrances, usually with a bizarre keyboard or brass instrument. That it manages to contain seven endless songs in just over 40 minutes is sorcery, or induced hallucination. Colossal rhythms and hypnotic melodic repetition disguise the fact that much, maybe most of each track's tracks are populated by odd voices and instruments music worthy of a residency at your local chin-stroking freak jazz parlour. When the voices sing yeah yeah yeah, they give me the feeling they're telling us they're not listening to whatever we have to say. Yeah yeah yeah, not leaving this groove, mate. This review may have been influenced by my watching our newly toddling do repeated circuits of our home's ground floor for most of the first runtime. Simon, I can send you the video. Another one I'd never get around to listening to if it weren't for this website. Really enjoyable when it was on, managed to get a lot of work done! Not sure I'd choose to listen again, but it's good I can identify some Dr Dre samples from their origins. Creative and fun if not particularly indelible.

Its like if Earth Wind and Fire decided to make a concept album after reading any Ray Bradbury short story Its pretty good, I like it

This totally slapped, I love that old-school funk vibe and this is it at it's best!

Except for Unfunky UFO and kind of Give up the funk, I feel like the grooves are a bit too similar through the album and horns are chaotic the whole way through, clashing in the mix a lot with whatever improv or ad libs the vocals are going for. I get this style calls for a repetitive groove, as old school funk would want it and just come back to the 1 every time and groove along but I feel like I’d rather hear James brown in that case or earth wind and fire or tower of power for more eventful songs. I know the band is legendary though and I am very very inclined to hearing later albums and other projets of George Clinton

It certainly is funky, and a good amount of the time that is a good thing on this record, as I felt myself slowly getting into it with each song, but if I take a step back and truly look at this album as a whole, it's very repetitive and lacks a whole lot of substance, to the point where a good amount of the tracks lack lyrics for a portion of the song. I understand I'm supposed to be getting down with it and not caring, but it's a little hard to when you're just sitting at a desk, doing work. Perhaps that's unfair to the album, but I mean, if I'm still getting into it while doing menial tasks, then it must be pretty good funk.

Good fun. P-funk and Give up the Funk were great. Kind of the same throughout, but groovy and fun. More of a chill-groove album than anything. Gotta love the lollipop man.

Classic p funk baby. They’ve got the fake radio station thing going, and the production is so solid. Lollipop man - the long-haired sucka (genius) I did find myself bored in a lot of spots. Maybe it’s because I listened to it before, or could only have one earbud in since I’m at work.

I recognized some of the songs but didn't know about the group. Like it!

May be an unfair raring but I just wasn't in the mood for this one

I have never actively listened to Parliament (or Funkadelic for that matter), but I'm sure I've heard it passively countless times playing at parties or in the background. I had kind of always written them off as something I wouldn't find that interesting. I was only partially right. It's definitely interesting and good and it grooves so hard. It's still not something that is going to get me jazzed but I guess I can say I fully understand the appeal now.

A bit too much with the radio/aliens bit but enjoyable overall.

I like funk just like the next person but it gets a little tiresome hearing it announced in practically every track on this record. The funk is more important that the announcement of the funk whilst also playing the funk. This record was OK. But at least I now know where Dr. Dre pulled the same for his track "Let Me Ride."
