Love the funk music. There are aspects of the music that are very 70s, but overall it's pretty good. I wish there were more prominent bass lines though. This is a light 4/5
Hadn't heard of these guys, and I do like a bit of funk.... but sadly these guys were only able to put the funk into the titles of their tracks. Most of the tracks had the same drum and bass, and had a decent build up to that funk sound, but never really completed the deal, which was disappointing.
Ok listening, happy enough to play it in the background. Can see where some of the older West Coast rappers took their samples from.
This just oozes cool. 40 minutes of pure party funk.

I liked this record a little less than done of the others kind of felt like this one had less direction. Less of a hook.
Listening to this album was interesting because it's amazing how many classic or iconic songs pulled and sampled the ideas of these here. The tracks themselves were smooth and funky. I do wish a lot of the tracks didn't have what amounts to spoken interludes and skits *within* the tracks themselves. Before or after sure, but when an interlude is throughout or just in the middle of the track, it kind of kills the replayability for me. Regardless, a fun listen, though not much I'd put on repeat.

This sounds great, but I was also left feeling that if you've heard one Parliament album, you have heard them all, to a degree. It's a formula, but a good one. I recognised bits here and there that had been sampled, but this was more a background to other things than something that grabbed me and made me listen from start to finish.
I love how this album goes from quiet to loud as the tracks build up. Parliament were funk trailblazer for Pixies. I couldn't stay still listening to this. The funk slowed down and stretched out. I felt a little peculiar after the album had finished and needed to sit down.

I think the thumpasorus has a bad case of gas. Pretty fun funk, a higher end 3/5 for me.

Fun to listen to, because it's funky, and I can appreciate it. But my patience wore down as it went on. None of the songs stuck in my head.

This is just about as funky as it gets. Unfortunately I wasn't feeling too funkadelic myself, maybe this would be a 4 on a party night.

I love this album. The hits, the non-hits, the attitude, the playing... this is Parliament at its intergalactic funky best. The handcuff song might have crossed a line, but I'm not taking any stars off the rating 'cause this just grooved the whole way through.
It's hard not to like this. It's also hard to get too excited by it. I can see popping this on in the background for a party, but I think even there it would get old after the third song.

If there is a better Parliament album out there I'd be very interested to hear it, because this album is outstanding. Knew it was a solid 5 after about 2 minutes. Every song is fantastic. Put of the albums I've listened to so far this is the one I'm most likely to come back to again and again. The playing on the album is perfect nit the bass lines are just on another level. What a fun album
It was good to hear the source of SO many hip hop samples. The music was fun but not quite as engaging as I had expected. Still definitely worth a re-listen.

Two of the best in the funk genre in short succession - George Clinton fans rejoice! You know exactly what you're getting here - cosmic grooves and fresh hooks that stay in your brain for days after hearing them. Not close to Maggot Brain in terms of accomplishment, but still a lot of fun. Three and a half. Fave track: Give Up The Funk

A little too funky/disco like for me, but I can understand it’s a concept album. Probably not something I’d choose to listen to again, but got all the vibes when Give Up The Funk came on! I’m looking forward to this album today. Funk is a genre that I feel should be universally loved. Obviously, it isn’t, because it would be strange if everybody agreed on something, but how could anybody dislike music designed to make you dance?! Songs I already knew: Give Up The Funk Favourites: Give Up The Funk, Unfunky UFO This album is like an antidepressant in audio form. I woke up groggy and tired this morning, but was bouncing by the end of this album. It’s just so happy and fun, and the band sound like they’re having a great time during the recording. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I even enjoyed the final track when the bass sounds like an autotuned fart. This is a fantastic album. Listen to it.
Funk and Motown music, feels like the kind of thing that would be on Soul Train. It’s definitely fun to listen to, but there’s a lot of interlude and talking. It does grow on you over time, though 3/5

Some of the best funk of all time. Music that sounds like it was made by a party rather than a band. Time melts away on a lot of these songs and all that matters is the groove. I also like how unpretentious it is. Always great to hear music that’s this excellent also be goofy and silly and fun.
I really love the humor that tends to be inherent in a lot of funk. I guess it's just natural to be loose, funny, goofy, innuendo-laden, and generally focused on having a good time. I love this record. One of my longer tenured heavy metal bands had an idea once about coming out on stage to a track from this album (I can't remember exactly which one). We found it funny to come out to funk and then go right into some gross death metal but we ended up doing the theme song to Terminator instead. Regardless, many listening sessions happened for this record and hearing it now still brings me back to that time, some ~15 years ago. All of these tracks are pretty solid and I don't really hear any weak ones. Playing this loud really enhances the experience too. I just remembered, we were going to use the track "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)" (what a name) as our entrance song. Man what a terrible hard-left panned synth in this track hahaha. Overall I feel like this is a pretty monumental album for funk and I think it's a solid 4.

Didn't love this one
When I was 6 years old my parents got me toe jam and earl for the genesis for my birthday. I fell in love with the soundtrack and often found myself playing the game just to jam to the soundtrack. This album unlocked that memory. 5/5

Yooo leuk
The first of the truly great Parliament albums where everything came together musically and conceptually. The P-Funk mythology takes off here and would be expanded and built upon across subsequent albums, while the musicianship on show is also out of this world featuring a who’s who of the P-Funk world: Bernie Worrell, Bootsy, Gary Shider, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Glen Goins, the Brecker Brothers, and too many more to mention. Of course, multiple rappers would later go on (and continue to) mine this record (and all of P-Funk) for samples - Dre, I’m looking at you. A record with an immense legacy, and a great starting point for exploring George Clinton and the P-Funk universe, but most of all, funky and fun.

I'd put this somewhere near hawkwind, the sci-fi was cool or at least interesting and the music was nice, but nothing that stood out.
I can really appreciate this album and I love the songs (mostly) but it really felt repetitive to me after a while of repeating the same riffs and lyrics for 5-7 minutes. That said this album had so many hits and was really influential so I’m giving it a 4 instead of 3.

It's Parliament. You know you're going to want to shake your groove thang. And I did! Fantastic album. But it's not Maggot Brain. That's a 5 star, and this is close. But the Parliament-Funkadelic collective had already hit their highest highs at this point.

What is the overall style and genre of the album? Disco/ funk/ concept Are there any standout tracks or moments that resonated with you? The album was great but it was very one note to me. I was smiling wide during the intro on the first track. Whole thing had me moving in my seat. But there wasn’t a single money that was standout for me. How did the album make you feel? Did it evoke specific emotions? Happy:giddy, I love a concept/character. Funk aliens is a fucking awesome concept and it lowered my guard to enjoy music that I normally wouldn’t. Did you enjoy listening to the album overall? Yes i did. It was a good time. Would you recommend this album to others? Who might particularly enjoy it? I would next time I’m having a party I might toss this on in the background. It was a good time. Not something for active thoughtful listening but just vibe-ing to.

This is peak George Clinton to me. While One Nation is Under a Groove is great, it isn’t quite the sound I associate with Clinton. Aqua Boogie is my other fave and the far out sound I associate with Parliament. This album is more of a direct lineage from James Brown’s funk but is reaching for that spaced out sound. What really struck me today is how clean the production is… I’ve always thought of Clinton’s sound as cacophonous but this album has presence of stage depth and the instruments are distinct and separate. There is a cacophony but if you listen clearly you can hear everything. And it grooves!
Funky. In some places, nothing seems to be happening at all. The noises during the Supergroove song are pretty bad. It's not really my thing, wouldn't listen again. 2 / 5 stars.

Was a cool album, I enjoyed hearing a bunch of things that I've heard sampled in other songs before. Also never knew where "Give Up The Funk" was from I enjoyed hearing it in the context of an entire album. "Night Of The Thumpasorus Peoples" had a very fart-like sound which made me think my headphones were shitting the bed, it sounded pretty bad to be honest, but the other elements of the song were good.

Magnum opus with afrofuturist overtones from funk legends who had such an impact that their music was pillaged 15 years later by Dr Dre when he patented the sound he needed for gangster rap. *Mothership Connection* is often silly, but its sleazy grooves are infectious, its instrumentation unpredictable, and its fun factor undeniable. I have neither the time nor the heart to write a very serious review about this record. During the nineties, there was a joke that can sum up my feelings about it: "Who's your favorite sex-crazed leader playing sax? Bill Clinton or *George* Clinton?" I'm team George Clinton all the way, baby! 5/5. May the funk be with you. The lyrics are far from deep and meaningful, but they are upbeat and catchy. This is FUNK as the lyrics and song titles state repeatedly. Apart from one track, all the rest have over 1M plays on Spotify. Track 1 "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" has almost 15M plays, and track 6 "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)" has over 63M plays. Track 6 is the best known and commercially most successful. It’s a very easy album to listen to and you will find your hand (or foot) tapping along. My Rating: ***

Okay this was not what I expected. I WAS expecting something Zappa like so when the first funky riff started I was relieved to say the least. I even knew a few of the songs. Not my bag but not bad!
It's a cool album. Some of the songs were a bit too long or repetitive, but it was still an enjoyable experience. Very close to a 4, but just not there. I respect it though. My favourite songs were Unfunky UFO and Handcuffs.

Never head of the band, never really listened to much in the genre and it's certainly not what I'd ever have picked out to listen to. Absolutely loved it. From the opening bars this was just great to listen to. It's opened up a whole back catalogue to me - perfect. Obvious 5 stars. First one yet.

Spacious funk episodes with bonkers lyrics. Hard to dislike but difficult to know when to play. Pleasingly no instrument dominates. Guitar, keyboards, brass all good on solo meanderings.

It's George Clinton introducing Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, and it oozes cool. On this album you'll learn that we want the funk, it's gotta be that p funk and if you give the people what they want when they want they'll want it all the time. Clinton is such a cornerstone of this music scene this has got 5 stars for that alone.

So fun! P-Funk is the obvious bridge from early R&B and Rock n roll, soul, James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, etc to early hip-hop— & especially Snoop Dogg. I always forget I know all these songs, in the original, & in all the samples.

I dont think I have listened to a full funk album but I have heard Give Up The Funk before. I really enjoyed it even though my missus walked past and asked what in the hell I was listening too. It took me a while to explain the whole Funkadelic/Parliament setup, then she rolled her eyes at me and walked away mumbling curse words. 4/5.

I really dislike funk but parliament are undeniably good at making it. It’s repetitive and there’s all this chat in the songs. It’s a great example of a classic from my second least favourite genre. I danced a bit during the first track, despite myself.
I think this album was very funky and fun I quite enjoyed them! It was very very nice and funky and fun and I loved.
Dial into radio station: WEFUNK Results: Funktastic Bombs. There's nothing not *fun* about this - a great sounding record, and the musicianship is top-notch (special head-nod for/to that bass in "Give Up the Funk"). If there's a negative for me - and I think it's a fair point that applies to a lot of Parliament's work - it's that the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts; a negative to me meaning that not many of these tracks are actually great *songs* in the traditional sense. The band will lock into a theme and not deviate that much from it, which might be why it weirdly works as an overall piece of work but each song by itself is merely ok. I'd rather listen to the entire album then have a song on a mixtape/playlist. You can clearly hear the massive influence these guys have had on popular music even (especially?) in the past decade; so many of these grooves and sounds are copied or even sampled on a lot of music today. TL;DR: As with all P-Funk, listen to the entire album at once. 7/10 4 stars.
Super fun, genre-funk record. Last two tracks are mega-bangers - and the whole record is full of energy and good humour - kind of like the best of Chili Peppers try to be, but much better.
This sounds like some great musicians had too much time on their hands so just noodled around in a studio for a while. It doesn't really do much or go anywhere, there isn't much variety. I know this band is full of awesome, but none of it is on show here.
If someone you know isn't into Funk, or hasn't been exposed to Funk - this is the album! Put this album on and watch as your friend transforms into eight-legged Funktopus. Lame party? Drop "Give up the Funk" and tear the goddamn roof off. Tired of the same lame sex? "Handcuffs" is a scientifically proven aphrodisiac. George Clinton was in is bag on this one.
Funk. SO much funk. Dripping with the funk. Too much funk? Maybe. I like funk in small doses. The 38 minute runtime helped.
These guys were having a fucking blast. I enjoy the blues and this is a disco version. It's enjoyable but in small doses.

This is a great album. Not stellar, so still only a 4 but def great. Plenty to like, esp the instrumental-ish sections - excellent musicianship and well produced.

This album is ok. The music is very repetitive, which is the style of funk, so I would start off enjoying a song, but would get bored of a song by the end of it. Plus some of the songs are quite long, exasperating the issue. 2.5/5 Favorite song: Give Up the Funk Worst song: P-Funk

Happy to be here, but how can I be so late to this party? I am new to P-Funk, Parliament-Funkadelic, etc. This is better than any imitations that have come since. pure enjoyment. stylish, ultra cool, joyful concept and the instrumentation even works. warm vocals, hilarious, and they know it.

George is just off his face, whacked out, seriously strange, and don't we love him for it. This is beyond definition or appraisal, joyous, wonderful music, you are surfing a rainbow of love listening to this. Fred! Maceo! Bootsy! Man, what a sound, what a groove. Just play it!
I want the bomb, I want the P-funk! Totally joyous, awesomely funky, amazing musicianship, what's not to like? OK, maybe some of the tracks go on a bit longer than they should. But that's a small quibble when talking about funky jams. Contains one of my favourite lines of all time "That's the law around here. You got to put your sunglasses on...so you can FEEL COOL." Never gets old! 4.5 stars.
Maceo Parker was the favourite musician of an old mate of mine, who passed away in 2021. And Fred Wesley probably ran a close second. So it was great to hear how their horns were so strong on this album, right from the get-go on the opening track & still there, ripping it up on the final cut. Every track is a winner, especially Give Up The Funk, which was really the only track I was familiar with. A perfect track. Clinton can be so funny - the humour highlight for me was his reference to blue-eyed soul: Then I was down South and I heard some funk With some main ingredients like Doobie Brothers, Blue Magic, David Bowie It was cool, but can you imagine Doobie-in' your funk? [From P-Funk(Wants to Get Funked Up)] I loved every moment of this record.
I love this album. It is the ultimate P-Funk album. It is surprisingly laidback, with heaps of space to let the music breathe. Everyone is stretching out a bit, and it is the band at the height of their powers; Bernie Worrell on keys, Bootsy on bass and recent escapees from the JBs Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker on horns. Everyone's singing, and they give each other enough room. It's fun and funny, and profound and aware, and funky and playful and laid-back. The soloing is surprisingly challenging, which means there is always something new to listen to. I love this record and have played it hundreds of times in my life, and probably will hundreds of times more. I find the songs are almost more chants or rhymes or monologues than songs-proper, but I love the way this holds together as an album. Rolling Stone reviewed it at the time as a "parody of funk", but I think that shows much Rolling Stone didn't get it then, although they have since acknowledged it on their list of Top 500 albums ever. I wish I had seen this band playing at this point in time, with their Mothership stage prop descending to the stage. The Mothership now resides on permanent display at the Smithsonian. As it should. And the album is the funkiest slab of wax in the Library of Congress. As it should. It is almost too much fun to be a classic.
I got this album immediately after Maggot Brain by Funkedelic, interesting! I prefer this one overall, it has a more polished sound and is a more cohesive album. It also feels more like a funky party, rather than the scary acid trip of Maggot Brain. Some of the songs do run a bit too long for my taste, but that's just the nature of the genre really, jams galore. Definitely deserves its place on the list. The influence on other artists is clear, even from the hip hop samples alone. I'll even forgive the weird farty synths and key-tar on the last track.

Wow, I thought I knew what Parliament Funkadelic was about, but this was FUNKY, man! I love the futuristic sound, and I love how it's like nothing you've heard before. Big fan, and now I'm going through the whole discography!
There was a middle-aged white lady in a lab where I once worked who told me her favourite all-time album was Mothership Connection. I confess I never listened to the whole album until now - only Tear the Roof Off. Shame on my funk.

We want the funk! I'm only vaguely familiar with the music of Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton, but I really loved this album. Lyrically, it definitely lived up to the name Mothership Connection. Instrumentally, this is definitely the type of music that I gravitate towards. I love synths and keyboards, and it's hard to imagine the synth pop of the eighties and 2010's existing without these folks paving the way. When George Clinton was The Masked Singer last year (and I correctly guessed it was him before the panel said anything), I was delighted, and wanted to listen to some of his music, but I completely forgot. Glad this was in my rotation today to remind me!

This is Parliament in top-form, fantastic. Interesting that it was one of TWO albums they released in 1975 (this one is far superior).
Though I may prefer Funkadelic by a smidge, this is undoubtedly top shelf funk.

This was a funky album, and I was grooving at moments but compared to many of the greats I’ve heard, this doesn’t make it high on the list. Though I think I heard a sample that was used in Awaken, My Love which was pretty cool.
Man, I could've swore we had an album from Parliament already. Am I insane? I thought that, and I thought it was this album in particular. But I guess not. This one's pretty good! Very quirky funk, the talky nature of some of these tracks was funny. It's cool how they refer to The Funk as a proper noun or a being. Nothing too mindblowing sonically, but a good listen regardless. The last track sounded like a bunch of farting. Favorite tracks: Give Up the Funk, Mothership Connection, Supergroovalistic. Album art: Again, I swear I thought we got this already. We've had a couple other albums with spaceship covers, of that I'm certain. But I'm probably confusing this album with stuff from Funkadelic that we've had. After all, they're the two spiritual halves of the P-Funk movement. 3.5/5

Someone's gonna have to explain to me the difference between Parliament, Funkadelic and Parliament-Funkadelic. I'm genuinely interested in knowing the story. My word, this is good music. I picked up Maggot Brain a decade or so ago and love it. Cosmic Slop also killls it. This is my first time hearing Mothership Connection. Although there's a lot familiar on here because of the Snoop and Dre's samples (and probably others I don't know about). Absolute classic that I'll be coming back to.

Along with James Brown P-Funk is responsible for funk as we know it so for that alone we must be thankful. This is certainly funky and weird
How did we even get here from James Brown in the course of just a decade? In just 7 tracks, George Clinton takes us on a magical ride through space powered by funk. I was a huge fan of the whole album from the start to finish. The transitions are sharp, and as soon as I'm satisfied with one, I'm excited to move onto the next. They take a lot of funk elements and exaggerate them to the max to create a lush landscape that does not come off as overwhelming. Has plenty of accessible tracks to pull people into the genre. Spoken word lyrics are hilarious, clear, and engaging, while the back vocals are catchy and fill up the space accompanying the other instrumentals. Songs are long, but patient in that they take as much as time as they need. It should be repetitive centering around the same melody with only minimal variations within a track, but the high amount of instrumental interjections keep things interesting. I also think the jazz structure has a lot to do with it. My favorite component though is the laser-sounding space synths and other weird instrumentation (see Supergroovalistic for best example) that adds to the extraterrestial imagery.
