Travis
5/5
Hard to articulate how I feel about an album I've listened to probably over 100 times. When you listen to an album so much, there's a drift in your favourite tracks. Ones you didn't notice so much at first come to the forefront, and what initially peaked your interest in the album can fade back. I think that's a sign of a really great album, one for which you feel all the tracks individually are excellent, and there's some coherence throughout the album. The Man Who fits this criteria for me. This is an album I've enjoyed for over 20 years, and one I expect to put on intermittently for the rest of my life.
Not so much a critical review as a love letter.
Do not sleep on the hidden track.

I realise this is going to lead to people thinking less of me, but I got bored and turned it off.
Stevie Wonder
3/5
One or two great tracks, a few more and this would've been a great album instead of just good.
Manu Chao
3/5
Taylor Swift
2/5
Unremarkable and instantly forgettable. It made so little impact that if I listened to it again, I don't think I'd recognise a single track. It's not that it's offensive, it's just so bland that I'm not even certain I heard it. It was like eating a lettuce for dinner. You don't recoil at every bite but you do wonder why you're not eating something with a bit more flavour, variety or both.
Gotan Project
2/5
a whole album of background music, not really my bag
The War On Drugs
2/5
Like Travis but slower and with none of the soul
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
You do need to be in the right mood for it but it's an excellent album. Every track hits. Great running album.
Sam Cooke
3/5
It hasn't changed my life, but it was an enjoyable listen
The Who
3/5
Grungier Beatles. Quite an enjoyable listen with a few hits.
Roni Size
2/5
I think it's close to a genre I would really enjoy but didn't quite click for me. The vocals that there were were a bit low energy, and I was often left feeling like I'd already heard that track before
The Velvet Underground
3/5
ABBA
2/5
noty
Michael Jackson
4/5
Excellent album, but definitely an abuser. Can we really still enjoy his work knowing he took advantage of so many children?
3/5
A couple of great tunes for sure
The Cure
3/5
It's a high 3 for sure, but just lacked that one or two excellent tracks to bump it to 4
Pink Floyd
2/5
Just another album that washed over me. Sorry
Charles Mingus

Muddy Waters
4/5
A lot of fun
Spiritualized
3/5
Couple of nice tracks on this, but not sure i'll be coming back for any of them. "Shine a Light" stands out above the rest of the album so it's understandable that it has vastly more plays on Spotify than any of the other tracks.
John Lee Hooker
3/5
It was an ok listen, lost my attention at a couple of points for sure but I have no objection to hearing more
Missy Elliott
1/5
Actively annoying. The lyrics are just terrible. I can't imagine what other people see in this. How many times does she tell me it's Missy Elliott on this album, is she trying to break a record set by Craig David?
Silver Jews
2/5
This country stuff is not for me
Brian Eno
4/5
I kept thinking I'd get bored of this eventually but somehow the album kept surprising me with its diverse sounds. I enjoyed the whole thing and it's been added to my Spotify favourites so I will return for sure!
Jerry Lee Lewis
3/5
Delivers what you expect
Traffic
2/5
bit of a preacher vibe

John Coltrane
3/5

Does it count as experimental? It is to me anyway. Couple of really great tracks.
Little Simz
3/5
It was ok, not sure i got into it but feel like it had more to it than a 2*
Gang Starr
2/5
Lyrically I think it might be quite good, but I just found it a bit boring. It's the kind hip hop that's done over a loop, where as I prefer some melodic progression
Stevie Wonder
4/5
This is the one, brilliant
Cocteau Twins
3/5
Wasn't blown away, but definitely got into it
Sly & The Family Stone
2/5
Very 60's, not really my thing

Sounded a bit more samey than some of their other albums
The Stooges
2/5
didn't feel memorable
Mylo
2/5
Mostly forgettable with a few bangers

Janelle Monáe
2/5
Not my bag
Pink Floyd
2/5
I've never understood pink floyd. I understand that a lot of other people love their work but i'm not one of them
Marvin Gaye
3/5
Was it cheesy when it came out, or is it just cheesy now? Impossible for me to say. Great rhythms, great vocals, lyrics weren't the most imaginative.

meh
The Temptations
2/5
It was fine, just didn't really get into it
Kraftwerk
2/5
Found it slo, long and repetitive
The Who
3/5
It was good, but who needs over 2 hours of the who in one sitting?
Van Halen
3/5
Iconic sound but not one i'll come back to a lot
Lupe Fiasco
3/5
I think this is one of those times where the album would be more highly rated if it weren't background music to my working and was a dedicated listen instead
Radiohead
2/5
Better than Hail To the Thief but i still found it really samey
De La Soul
3/5
Upbeat and poppy
Bill Callahan
1/5
I found his voice/ style of sing/ talking over the music really grating
The Flaming Lips
3/5
I think this could be a 4 with further listens. One of those times where i recognised a few tracks that spotify already puts in my mixes, without me knowing who they were by. Has unusual sound and vibe, and album art that makes me wonder if i've micro dosed lsd today
Eels
5/5
Melodically brilliant with engaging lyrics
Meat Loaf
3/5
It's a good album, understandably well loved, even if it's not something I'd put on I can certainly appreciate it

1/5

Count Basie & His Orchestra
3/5
brilliant
Wild Beasts
2/5
Didn't notice it had finished for quite some time so i guess i blocked the whole thing out

Adam & The Ants
2/5
Just too weird and 80s for me
Thelonious Monk
3/5
It was definitely a jazz

A couple more bangers and it could've been a 4. Obviously contains the GOAT christmas song
Miles Davis
3/5
Enjoyable, even if i'm never going to rave about jazz
Soul II Soul
3/5
I was sort of dreading this as not, "my sort of music", but turned out to be pretty enjoyable, even if a little soporific at times.
Frank Sinatra
3/5
It's good, but not a lot of variety to the tracks
Elvis Presley
3/5
It was all very elvis
Willie Nelson
3/5
country not really my thing, but i did enjoy this. Vocals and melodies were strong. It was really chill.
Franz Ferdinand
2/5
Of all the indie stuff coming out around this time, I found Franz Ferdinand to be the most oatmealy. Bloc Party, Kaiser chiefs, and The Killers for example, were all making more exciting and interesting indie at the time.
The Kinks
2/5
Didn't find it very interesting
Deee-Lite
2/5
got bored
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
T. Rex
3/5
The Clash
2/5
Dr. Dre
2/5
Another artist for whom i'm more familiar with their later work. I expected to enjoy this but it felt samey, and the lyrics are pretty uninspiring: how good they are, how big their dicks are etc.
Stereolab
3/5
Really enjoyable but just lacked any killer tracks to make it a 4
The Beach Boys
3/5
Beatles
3/5
I do enjoy The Beatles, but maybe i'm more of a fan of their greatest hits than individual albums
The Allman Brothers Band
3/5
lively but long
Femi Kuti
3/5
Really enjoyable. Felt like beach music
Paul Revere & The Raiders
3/5
Richard Hawley
1/5
Slow and lumbering. Like the worst Christmas album, without any of the jingles, that someone puts on in August
Nick Drake
4/5
A unique voice and enjoyable melodies
Beck
2/5
I don't know that i'm that into ballads
Stan Getz
3/5

3/5
Billy Bragg
3/5
Pretty inoffensive all round
Johnny Cash
3/5
Really into a couple of the tracks on here, ofc 'Hurt' is an outstanding cover
Arcade Fire
3/5
There are some good tracks on here, but it's also long and forgettable
1/5
I quite like a few Bob Dylan tracks in isolation, but his vocals really grate after 1-2 tracks which make a whole album in one sitting like a weird form of torture. He gives an unusual cadence to his lyrics and an unpredictable syllable emphasis that swings from too little to too much, all too rapidly. All things considered, it makes for an uncomfortable listening experience.
The Byrds
2/5
Most of it drifted through me like typical 60's stuff
The Charlatans
2/5
not into it
Elvis Presley
2/5
Got a bit bored of this one, didn't enjoy it as much as elvis is back
The Go-Go's
3/5
fun and upbeat, bit too poppy to get any higher though
The Strokes
5/5

Slint
2/5
Went back for a 2nd listen, but there won't be a 3rd
Steely Dan
2/5
Too much 60/70's american rock in this compendium
2/5
no
Kanye West

Nina Simone
3/5
Short and sweet
The Avalanches
3/5

Curtis Mayfield
2/5

2/5

3/5
Bit disappointed because i thought i would like it more

The Police
4/5
Couple of really great ones on here but it was difficult to decide whether to go to 3 or 4

I thought i liked adele more than this, but it was ok
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
I enjoyed this as much as any other britpop
Rufus Wainwright
3/5
Nice sound
Motörhead
2/5
Bit too intense for me, and didn't need the 2nd disc. Obviously the opening track is a banger but i'm never going to put the whole album on for it.
The Who
3/5
I warmed up to it
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Not what i was expecting, but lively
The Bees
3/5
mellow and enjoyable

Had a good bluesy sound with strong vocals, without being too experimental
Meat Puppets
4/5
Good energy, and a different sound from a lot of this list
Parliament
2/5
funky but i wasn't that into it
The Rolling Stones
3/5
some bangers, but for me a lot of background music too
The Killers
5/5
Nostalgia aside, one of the greatest albums of the noughties for sure
Can
2/5
really dull, but not actively annoying
Living Colour
3/5
It really came alive in the second half of the album for me, the first half was a bit of a snore
Funkadelic
3/5
The best rock funk fusion I've heard so far
Pixies
4/5

2/5
Forgettable
Pink Floyd

A good album, but carried a bit by every breath you take
Simon & Garfunkel

3/5
Fun, rocky, short
King Crimson

Public Enemy
2/5

Bit dreary and samey
Christina Aguilera

Neil Young & Crazy Horse

2/5
Pretty generic Paul
Talking Heads
2/5
drone
Violent Femmes
3/5
Obviously one track on here that gets far more play time than the others, but it doesn't feel like a one hit wonder album. It has a modern sound and I wouldn't have expected it be from the 80s.

Surprisingly good, i thought iron maiden were screamier than that
The Divine Comedy
3/5

Bit screamy for me

Fatboy Slim

3/5
Fun, up tempo, and not too experimental
OutKast
2/5
bored
The Zutons
3/5
Started strongly and tailed off

An iconic bluesy/ rocky sound
Les Rythmes Digitales

The first cd is great. Not sure the extended edition was needed though, the remixed versions don't really add anything and sound more monotonous.

A nice break from the typical 70's and 80's sounds that seem to rule this list. Only shame is that for most tracks, i don't know what they're singing about, but the melodies are enough to carry it.

M.I.A.
4/5
Hard one to judge on a single listen. I have a good feeling that it's going to get more listens from me though. Fairly unique sounds, reminds me of early albums from The Streets
Arctic Monkeys
3/5
It's an ok album. Never really understood the hype around Arctic Monkeys at a time when I felt Bloc Party, The Strokes, The Killers, Deathcab for Cutie, Green Day, and many more were putting out better stuff.

The White Stripes

Unfortunately the opening track makes the others look worse by comparison. Found it less engaging than Get Behind Me Satan
Britney Spears
2/5
Some well written hits, and some dull and generic 90's pop share an album
Travis
Steely Dan
3/5
It was alright
Linkin Park
5/5
if there's a better altrock album, i haven't heard it
Nitin Sawhney

Enjoyed some of it, but not sure if i'll come to any of it. Tides was a high point, i've often thought there isn't enough overlap of drum and bass, and piano
Pearl Jam
4/5
Up and down but i think it does enough for a 4. Some real iconic stuff on here and i don't feel like it's dated at all
Dizzee Rascal
2/5
I thought i liked Dizzee Rascal. Turns out i just like a couple of the popular tracks. The album is a grind. Very repetitive
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
Great first listen, definitely one i need to come back to appreciate more. I think there's a lot of depth here
The Electric Prunes
2/5
Another one of these relatively niche albums. Idk what about it is so special to appear in this list

i wanted to like this more, but it was a pleasant enough listen
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
pleasant

Beck
3/5
Beck's best but didn't get into it
Billy Bragg
2/5
dreary
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Sounded more modern than 70s to me. Might've been a 4 with more listens, but too far behind to be doing that
