This is really good, a middle ground between Simon and Garfunkel and the Paul Simon of Graceland I grew up with.

I like my version of X&Y more, but this is a better album. So much promise of what they could be vs. what they became.

An OK listen, not bad but not a lot grabbed me.
More sophisticated zep, needs another listen.
This is really good, a middle ground between Simon and Garfunkel and the Paul Simon of Graceland I grew up with.
Very seashantish; not bad, but that is what is most memorable.
Not a good sign when, listening to the first track, you think to yourself: this just goes on and on...
What an album! 70s Soul is a gap in my music library and this is a good addition- I wish I could add half stars because this album is almost perfect.
A solid album that falters in the latter half of side 2.
Its age is showing, if I'd heard this in the 90s, I probably would've loved it dearly.
Not a Dead fan, but this was good. Their reputation as a jam band isn't really on display here- for the better. Just a nice set of good tunes.
Probably 3.5 stars, but a solid album.
Really captures the music at the end of the 80s/start of the 90s. May sound dated now, but I can hear the inspiration many artists pulled from this band.
endless harmonies
I just can't with this band- either I like it or immediately tune it out.
It doesn't have the flow of Rubber Soul, but it signals growth in their songwriting and studio experimentation.
Psychedelica and long guitar solos still elude me- some quality songs, but I could not finish this.
Good, but nothing really grabbed me.
The hits good, some are great! But the rest is forgettable.
I like my version of X&Y more, but this is a better album. So much promise of what they could be vs. what they became.
His baritone was not yet there.
The hits are great, the misses...
Not bad, but nothing grabbed me.
The context is important here- the roots of indie and emo are here.
Quite good
Good light jazz, very 80s.
Quite good and soothing
Despite its short length, there are a few songs that just seem to go on too long. The misogyny is also glaring, it is easy to see why they rarely played many of these songs.
This is what a broken heart sounds like.
Should be 4.5! A great album, but Within You Without You is borderline unlistenable.
Missed out on this when it came out, need to relisten to this.
A great take on classic songs.
3.5- just the right amount of excess.
I tried...
A masterpiece that captures the turn of the century post 9/11 discontent.
Good but very long and bloated
A mixed bag of really good to great songs, and some not-so-good material. I know this album has a strong cult following, but I wonder how his early death contributed to his borderline canonization as an iconic artist. Are people reacting to his work, or to what they think he might have become based on a small sample size?
Really good! The rambling in front of By the time I get to Phoenix is the only blemish.
Very good but flawed album.
A good album, but not my thing.
Her high pitched singing relly gets in the way and distracts from the music.
Should be 2.5 - some are really good, while others are instantly forgettable.
I just can't with The Who- either it's some of the best music I have ever heard, or the worst dreck ever to befoul my ears.
Not as "punk" as I was expecting, but you can hear the roots.
Have to listen to Midnight Rambler again, seemed to just go on and on
May have to come back and rerate this a 5- what a great album!
It's very good, at times great, but an editor was needed- a flawed masterpiece.
Should be 3.5- cannot believe they do not allow half stars.
Interesting, but feels crammed- like a few songs could be removed
Could not finish. Maybe have to try again.
4.5- still a wonderful album but 1-2 songs are hit or miss: Red Hill Town and Trip Through Your Wires
DNF- will have to try again, not in the mood for this type today.
The singer's voice really turned me off.
The constant dialogue clips are often distracting from the music- should try this one again.
Hard listen- have to give it a relisten
I can only listen to so much feedback and screaming before I hit skip
Man, side two really shits the bed
Could not finish- just an odd collection that did not seem to flow from one song into another.
Not sure what is going on during the first two songs, but the album takes on a very different tone starting with the third song and gets significantly better.
An absolute masterpiece that marks the beginning of a stellar 4-album run for the Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty. While there is still some misogyny from License to Ill present here, it is not nearly as rampant. The Dust Brothers provide the music, and it is awe-inspiring; this album and De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising set impossibly high standards for sampling that few albums have matched.
I just can't with Wilco
Eclectic mix of songs, not the folksy tunes I was expecting... the last track is quite startling, to the point where I had to Google it to find out about it.
Could not finish
Good, but just too long. I wonder if it would be better if a few songs were cut out.
Tame by today's standards, just look at the Billboard 100 for 1982- this would be shocking for the time for those who are trying to "protect" the youth.
The Kinks have always felt like they are following the popular trends of the time, trying to fit in but never really believing in what they were doing. Their music isn't bad, but it is bland.
Should be 4.5 because, let's face it, The Girl is Mine and Lady in My Life are not good songs.
Quite interesting, the lead singer's voice is unique and not for everyone.
It is very good, but also extremely easy to ignore. I've had this album since it came out and every listen I have to force myself to focus on it; I enjoy it when I do, but it often just becomes musical wallpaper.
It feels like they found one sound and used it on almost every track.
Sounds like someone trying to sound like Steely Dan, and failign badly
Could not finish this, too weird and just noise.
Instant purchase, what a great album! Many songs grabbed me and pulled me away from what I was doing, in a good way.
Should be 3.5 (still ridiculous we can't rate 1/2 stars).
"Is this song not done yet?" is a thought I had many times while listening to this album.
Complete masterpiece.
Every song feels like it goes on too long
