Classic from start to finish!

So Far Away From Me Why Worry? This Man's Too Strong Brother in Arms Love this album.

I like the music!

Such a great album.

This is a phenomenal album full of all-time classics. Mark Knopfler is possibly my second favorite guitarist of all-time, and he shines again on this album. The trumpet and sax playing on the intro to Your Latest Trick are also out of this world. An album that everyone should listen to at least once in their lives. Favorite tracks: ALL OF THEM.

80’s Nostalgic vibes!

Totally ‘80’s — Money For Nothing, reminds me of airshows & being abruptly awoken at papa’s house lol

One of my favs!

omg, yes, absolutely g.o.a.t. Mark Knopfler is a giant!!

I remember it from my youth. I used to hate this record. But I know it so well... Now I like it: or I like me remembering that period of my life.

I've been listening to this album for a while, first on a cassette tape in the car, then on CD in the car, then on an iPod in the car, and now steaming in the car, and it never disappoints. Excellent throughout.

This album made me really happy and grateful. I danced through my chores.

definitely an album for "my island"

10/5 .one of my all time favorites ,been in my collection since day one. Knopflers guitar plying unparalleled.

Amazing.

One of my favorite albums.

So Far Away - Catchy bass line, catchy guitar riff and lyrics. Feels like I should be in a coming of age film Money for Nothing - Questionable lyric but the other lyrics very fun. Classic really Walk of Life - Insane song. Bouncy, up-beat rock and roll. Your Latest Tricks - Gentle, slow, nice relaxing song. Feels sexy, especially with Knopfler's Ooohs Why Worry - Slow, relaxing, dreamy song. Liking this a lot. Nice instrumental to end the song. Ride Across the River - Cool, different tune. Feels like I'm in the jungle The Man's Too Strong - Great lyrics, great guitar. Nick Cave sequel in a weird sort of happier way One World - Cool bass very catchy. Different song I'm liking it, feels like a powerful listen Brothers in Arms - Another classic this. Very smooth, catchy guitar. Lyrics felt like they were being whispered and I liked that a lot.

Fabelhaft

I found this to be much better than I remembered it.

Long time no hear but still Great

Dire Straits meets MTV. Not the best Dire Straits album in my view, but I get why it’s on this list.

Fantastic album. My first 5 star rating. Loved it for years haven't listened in a long time

Really loved this album, even thought I have listened to it before. I don't think there is a bad track on it.

I like the ZZ Top song (Money for Nothing) and the Springsteen song (Walk of Life). Go get paid, boys! But I LOVE the 2nd half of any Dire Straits album. It's like slipping into a warm bath.

That’s a classic masterpiece. 5 stars

Banger. Mark Knopfler is a genius on the ole guitar

Love this album, reminds me of dad and family vacation

Wonderful album. Brilliant songs. Hold out still after all these years.

love Dire Straits

love these guys

Classic

Awesome guitar!

O que falar dessa pedrada? 5/5 fodaaaa

Favorite Tracks: Money For Nothing Walk of Life Brothers in Arms

This album means a lot to me. It's the band with which my father introduced me to rock. This album was also given to me in a vinyl shop on a long trip to Spain. Dire Straits are so manic in the way they produce music, I love that kind of creation so much.

I don't have to listen to this album. I know it by heart. Might be the best of Dire Straits on display here. A guitarist buddy of mine hates Knopfler's voice, so he isn't willing to even listen to Knopfler – one of the guitar greats of all time. Even the filler is great, BUT... Sultans of Swing and Romeo and Juliet appear on other albums. Album is still significant. The digital recording techniques and mastering that were bleeding edge at the time, the seamless cut between the drum solo and the main song on Money For Nothing, so much amazing stuff happening on this video, completely invisible.

It got range, money for nothing is such a jam

Really good album. Amazing mixing, stellar guitar performance and great lyrics and vocals

Buen disco. Bastantes canciones lentas.

Why worry y otros grandes éxitos.

Classic album

This was straight vibes

1. Lyrics: The lyrics of "Brothers In Arms" are marked by introspective guitar work and melancholic themes, providing a vivid portrayal of the emotional landscape, particularly during the Falklands War. The profound storytelling captivates listeners, inviting them to connect with the deep human experiences conveyed in the album 2. Music: The musical aspect of the album is a testament to Dire Straits' prowess. The main instrumental theme of the title track, "Brothers In Arms," is skillfully spread between speakers, showcasing a meticulous arrangement that enhances the overall listening experience. The remastered version is noted for its pleasing sound quality, elevating the impact of the original compositions 3. Production: The production of "Brothers In Arms" has been a subject of discussion. Some critics perceive a certain brittleness and hardness in the album's sound, attributes that were apparent even before knowledge of its digital production. However, others find a breath of fresh air in the album's digital nature, acknowledging the innovative techniques employed during its creation, such as bouncing and layering 4. Themes: The album delves into various themes, with tracks like "The Man's Too Strong" explicitly exploring military themes. Beyond this, "Brothers In Arms" touches on the broader horrors of war, the camaraderie formed among soldiers, and the deep human connections forged in challenging circumstances 5. Influence: "Brothers In Arms" not only stands as a musical masterpiece but also serves as a commentary on the music business. The album's statements on the industry have resonated with listeners and influenced subsequent generations of musicians, contributing to its enduring impact

I like the guitar, nuff said.

Overlooking Knopfler’s transcendent guitar and the sterling 80s production value (in my mind, 2nd only to Donald Fagen’s The Nightfly for acoustic quality), the jaded, fatigued ascerbia of this album makes it an essential classic. Money for Nothing gets (as it should) a bumper crop of love for accurately skewering 80s excess, but the rest of this pristine disc isn’t too far behind. It’s a desert island album for me.

I knew that album before, so it was a pleasure listening to this album again. I listened twice to it this weekend. And why? Because this album is a perfect example, why i am listening to music in general. Besides Mark Knöpfler there are the other members of the band which i indeed must respect, knowing Mark is the Roger of the group. After listening to this album a second time, i realised how f***ing cool this album can get when listening more often and carefully. So as i already knew really well money for nothing, walk of life and brothers in arms, which are for sure one of the greatest rock songs of all time, this time i discovered new songs for me as well, which i will f***cking listen to the rest of the year, or at least the rest of the month almost every day :). Which are: The Man's Too Strong!! So Far Away I think in December, my favorites in a particular order will be: 1) Money For Nothing (still my favorite. Because you must listen to the Knebworth, 1990 version) 2) Brothers In Arms 3) The Man's Too strong (probably displacing Walk Of Life to 4th) In this respect: I shoulda learned to play the guitar :( 5.0

Rating: ** 5 ** Notes: Really nice album, nice music, enjoyed it. Songs which stood out in no particular order (credits to Uncle Gue for the idea): "Why Worry" "Money For Nothing" "So Far Away" "Brothers in Arms" ------------------------------------------------------------- Rating Scale: 1- very bad 2- bad 3- neutral 4-good 5-very good additonaly -/+ sign if necessary

I WANT MY MTV I dearly love the band. One of the greatest of all time. I love rock, jazz and blues. And guess what, that’s what the album is about. The combination of those genres with the awesome lyrics is just wonderful! Very emotional album. Helped me through bad days and boosted my good days. I cannot give a top3! Every song is equally good in my opinion.

Brothers in Arms the song pushed it from 4 to 5 stars. Easy to forget how good this is, understand why it was so big when it came out.

Nice one

Of course this album’s here. Great from start to finish. Easy five stars.

Dire Straits always.

sickest guitar rift for a song thats about selling microwaves!

Haven’t listened in years

The best

Smoooooth.

Only classics. Sublime album, simple. Also reminds me of my childhood because my father loves this. Which is nice.

J'ai même pas encore écouté que je sais que ça va être une dinguerie Dire Straits c'est incroyable, j'adore la cover de l'album aussi J'ai écouté ça dans le bus en dormant dinguerie

Nice, fun mix of rock and blues. More electronica in background. A long time favorite. More soulful and folk influenced than I remembered

One really stand out single in an album of a lot of meaningful yet non-replayable songs. 4.5/5

I love Dire Straits

This is now one of my new fav albums— it really is a journey to listen to from beginning to end. Must listen!

Wonderful, wonderful record.

good, laid back

Excellent debut with some of the finest guitar licks ever put on vinyl.

I have really fond memories of blasting this album while burning through the mtn roads of the adirondacks on my way to a cliff to climb. I can’t make an unbiased review. 5/5

Tres bien. Still sounds good nearly 40 years on.

The thing that always stands out to me with Dire Straits is how casual they make greatness sound. And also how Mark Knopfler sounds like the coolest dude in the world every time he performs. Incredibly fun album with superior guitar work as per. (The self-titled album is better though) Favorite track: Money for Nothing

Really good start, then it might lose you a bit, but ends on a high note Money For Nothing and Brothers In Arms are usually the songs I listen to once in a while

Masterpiece.

Mid 80's genius.

Masterpiece. Only Walk Of Life I usually skip. IDK. I've heard it just too many times. Radio stations, MTV ... all over. And even now. If they (radio) play a song from Dire Straits, they play Walk Of Life. And there are so many other (better) songs from them ... But still ... 5 ... no doubt.

I am a big Dire Straits fan and I am torn on this album being in this book. Not because I don't think it deserves it, but because "Making Movies" is the Dire Straits best album and I don't know how it got left out. So I would trade "Making Movies" for this one in a heartbeat. I get this album sold more, but "Making Movies" was a brilliant work that encompasses a lot of what the Dire Straits could do. Regardless, this is a really good album, if not front-filled with the best songs. "Brothers in Arms" is one of the best songs Knopfler has ever written and even the non-hits are good songs. Considering how many albums this one sold, it has to be on the list, but there is nothing on here that gets elevated to a masterpiece song, of which "Making Movies" has two. One last thing...Knopfler should obviously not use the word "f-g" in a song, but (a) it was 1985 and (b) the song is not sung from the perspective of him, but the perspective of two working class guys who are bemoaning how easy being a rockstar is. So yes, they probably would have referred to an artist like Boy George in that way. Not excusing the use of the word, but there is more context needed.

There are only a handful of albums in my life that have listened to straight through again and again and again. This is one of them. One of the best ever.

Classic - one of my favorites ever

Amazing.

This is fucking good. Money For Nothing, wow. what an entrance with that guitar. Solid solid amazing guitar work. But like, this album has the GOODS. "Your Latest Trick" alone, if that was the only good track on an album, I'd be trying to find ways to justify giving this a 4. That's an epic, epic sound. And so smooth. It really is an album that makes me feel good. There's something about this that keeps me grounded. Even just the instrumental tracks, those are so tasty and pleasant. Somehow these instrumentals introduce a tad of cheese with the 80s-ness, but it gets flipped around, turned upside down by the grooves and the rhythm section, which is really what pulls it into one thing. I will keep listening to this album. They just have a way with dynamics, where they keep you invested with so much surprise. 5/5

Not to score things based on Nostalgia, but this is truly one of those Albums that are all killer and no Filler. Dire Straits are just one of those classic bands that I know inside and out and this album is no exception every song on here is great. The Album Starts really strong with So Far Away and Money for nothing and ends on arguably the two greatest songs on the Album One World and Brother in Arms. Perfectly paced I could listen to this over and over again it's just one of those absolute classics the diversity on display is great, the instrumentation particularly is good throughout and most importantly it doesn't overstay it's welcome like a lot of albums on here. Doing yourself a disservice by missing out on this one.

Top Album

if i could give thios 6 starts i would. one of the best albums of all time in my opinion

Your latest trick is amazing Finished it: Liked almost everything minus some tracks, would listen to some again.

Zalig album

The very definition of "guilty pleasure". At least for me. Sonically, esthetically, *Brothers In Arms* is schmaltzy as fuck, with eighties production values so slick that it feels like the chrome of a vintage car as seen through the pages of a brand new glossy magazine. You can even whiff those production values through the artwork. You just need to replace "vintage car" with Mark Knopfler's 1937 14-fret National Style "O" Resonator guitar, and you literally get the picture. To be clear, old-school twist "Walk Of Life" and MOR cheesefest "Your Latest Trick" (complete with a long sax solo that make the track a perfect companion for extended rides on the highway) are only "dated" in the sense that they were always intended to be so. Such is the genius of Mark Knowfler, who knew enough music history to understand his most commercial impulses at the time would actually age well on an artistic viewpoint if he kept everything as clear and on point as he could. And the not-so-latest trick to accomplish such a feat was to balance catchiness and subtlety in ways that only someone like Knowfler could do. The best example of this is his iconic guitar riff on the timeless "Money For Nothing", but there's also the laidback opener "So Far Away From Me" to prove it. And since the songwriting and other guitar soloing is consistently good or interesting from start to finish, the whole album is a home run. The deeper cuts about the tragedy of war on the second side ("Ride Across The River", "The Man's Too Strong" and the melancholic title track closing the prodeedings) are especially poignant, and they add a cohesive thematic throughline that also brings a lot of resonance to the second part of this record. In comparison, "Why Worry" and "One World" are more like meat-and-potatoes numbers, each in their own genre, but they can't hurt the whole thing. Terms like "meat-and-potatoes", "derivative" and "commercial" can't really apply to this album anyway. If only because significant parts of it give enough winks to the audience about its own "plastic", pastiche aspects. In "Money For Nothing", Knowfler, along with Sting (!), does not merely aim jabs at consumerism, including the music business; the players also seem to make fun of themselves here, just as they make fun of MTV. MTV heard them alright, by the way: they went along with the joke, and turned the track into an instant hit through its heavy rotation on the music channel. All of this might be a little cynical for some, but it does add a cutural impact to this record that, very clearly, make it a 5/5 essential listen. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: a little more than 500, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one). Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter. Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter

Life long Dire Straits fan so I already love this album. So many great songs on this. I just love Mark Knopfler's playing style and I've been lucky to see him live a few times.

Outstanding...one of the best

One of my favourite albums

I strait up love Dire Straits (pun intended). And this album is full of bangers.

Straight bangers

Bellissima 'Money for nothing' come anche 'Walf of life'

Much better than I remembered. Money for Nothing has not aged as well as the rest of the album but still a great riff and guitar part. Many subtle songs on this release. So Far Away is an understated groove. Ride Across the River is a moody masterpiece. Going with 5-stars for this one.

Шедеврально!

Dit is echt een klassieker! Geweldig album, geweldige melodie, geweldige zang. Zowel up-tempo als gevoelige nummers. Allemaal gewoonweg geweldig!!

Perfection. Four all time classics to open and close the album, and the songs in between are pretty darn good too. I love Mark Knopfler, and will always remind the world that he is (technically) Scottish!

This is my second Dire Straits review, and this is my favourite Dire Straits album. I have listened to it many times before, and am looking forward to listening again. This is the 29th best selling album of all time. The album was so long, that in order to make it fit on an LP, the band had to trim some of the songs down a bit. The CD version of this record has the full versions of all the songs, as it was intended to be. Some of the songs can tend to wander a bit, but Mark Knopfler's crisp, flawless guitar playing makes it tolerable. Apparently Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) was consulted about how to get the guitar sounds featured in Money for Nothing. This album was recorded on an island in the Caribbean, called Montserrat. While the band were there, they heard that Sting was also there on a wind surfing vacation. Mark Knopfler extends an invitation to Sting to join them for supper one night. After supper, Mark shows Sting what they had been working on, which was Money for Nothing. Sting loved the song, so Mark asks him if he thinks he could add anything to it. That night, they go into the studio, and Sting lays down the intro lyrics: "I Want My MTV", and the rest is history. Overall, a phenomenal album today, and an easy 5. Favourite songs: Money For Nothing, Walk of Life, So Far Away, Brothers in Arms, One World, Your Latest Trick, The Man's Too Strong, Ride Across the River, Why Worry? Least favourite songs: None. The whole album is gold! 5/5

Mästerverk. så bra!

Why worry y otros grandes éxitos.

What can I say? The title track is perfection.

Classic album, bought it at electric fetus in Minneapolis and left it at the airport in Chicago.

This is a strong 4 or a weak 5 for me. The guitar work is insane and Mark Knopfler is godly on this album. The only thing bringing it down is the B-side. It's really good but after listening to the A-side which is perfect it brings the album down a notch. This is the one I'm having the hardest time rating. I've actually given lesser albums 5-star ratings but that's because I tried to rate them within their genres. This one is harder to give 5-stars as it's a rock album. There's so many good ones. I'm going for 5 stars just for the iconic riffs and the great first half of the album.

Best Album ever!!

Ah ouaissssss! Sa J'AIME! J'adore l'instrumentation. Super album

"Money for Nothing" is undeniably a 5 star song - that shiz is built into the bedrock of my musical appreciation psyche! On first listen, the non-famous tracks felt quite filler-like so I was leaning towards a 4 score for the whole album, but a second pass through and most of them caught my attention in places - reckon I'd grow to love them with more listens, so reckon an overall 5 is justified! Fave track - "Money for Nothing", problematic lyrics aside, is just so good - when the guitar comes in at around 90 seconds! Damn!

Perfect mix between rock and blues. Amazing sax on Your Latest Trick, really like the guitar work on One World. One of the greatest riffs of all time on Money for Nothing. Brothers in Arms and Why Worry are beautiful.

5/5 Absolute Classic Standouts: Money For Nothing, Your Latest Trick, Why Worry, Brothers in Arms, So Far Away, Walk of Life, The Man's Too Strong, One World.... Every song basically....

Automatic 5 stars just for the raunchy guitar tone of Money for Nothing.

If you're of a certain age this album was huge. It was everywhere. It basically powered MTV and epitomised stadium rock, and wow it blew is away. And oh boy it's still amazing to this very day all the way through. And no, it's not homophobic, it's showing up homophobes, just in very early 80's language so yeh, the language is more dated than the music. Crazy to even think that Brothers In Arms is a huge US military record too. Just feels pretty unique, instantly recognisable and pretty special. What an album.

Hard to dock stars here. So many classics

Album starts off with 3 certified bangers. Money for Nothing and Walk of Life specifically are legendary songs. The next couple songs definitely tone down the explosiveness and tempo, but are very nice songs to listen to regardless. A lot of good variety with the introduction of some brass. The riffs Ride Across the River could be a song in Final Fantasy 9 or Crash Bandicoot. I've heard the hits on this album hundreds of times, but the other songs on it are exceptional in their own right. I could argue the middle of the album feels a bit disjointed, but I think I really appreciate the variety of instruments, styles, and tempos Dire Straits employ here. Definitely not an album where "every song sounds the same". This album makes me appreciate how available music is to us today. It'll be interesting to see if this album has songs that my kids and grandkids will listen in their day because there is no way that Money For Nothing ever dies.

So many hits on this one.

Listened to this album again and need to go back and edited this to a 5 star 2 and a half years after originally listening to it.

S L A P S

One of the best albums ever made: top 10 album (together with Madonna's Like A Virgin, David Bowie's Let's Dance, Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA, Blondie's Parallel Lines, Prince's Purple Rain, Human League's Dare, Tina Turner's Private Dancer and MBV), and that despite a couple of lesser songs.. The Brothers in Arms scene in the 44th episode of West Wing is one of the greatest moments in American television history and this is for a great part due to this song.

This got me into (album) music. Must have played it hundreds of times. Now it feels somewhat too slow and elongated in places but it is still easily 5 stars.

Absolute fucking banger, one facet of 80s music perfected

Sounds great production-wise. The guitar playing is excellent. I loved how subtle they were with embracing quietness at certain parts and not over-playing.

Outstanding!

This album really scratches my 80s rock itch. It conjures up memories of family road trips and Dad discovering CDs in about 1985. Some classic tracks that stir up the emotions.

Awesome stuff

grew up with this album

I love this album

Before listening to this album I had never heard a Dire Straits song that I didn’t like, I’m proud to announce I still haven’t. This album is absolutely fantastic

Fantastic pioneering rock album.

Great album, love the vibe, bought this on vinyl recently!! Saved songs: Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life, Ride Across The River, One World, Brothers In Arms

5/5. 9/10

classic

This album is apparently one that sound techs use to figure out their balance. There’s heaps to it and the nostalgia for me is massive. I remember my Dad pulling out the vinyl gently and enjoying dancing around with hun when I was a little girl

Love this album. I already knew it. Money for nothing is badass

Dos maiores da história

Inte det bästta skivat jag hörat

Good!!!

Incredible album... Was not expecting but the first few songs are a BANG! Then continues into instrumental vibe and is very easy to listen to.... I don't know exactly how to rate that but I will give 5/5 because I want to remember it

I could listen to this anywhere. My favorites were Your Latest Trick and The Man’s Too Strong.

Love Mark Knopfler’s guitar playing. Great sound. So many good songs on this album.

Solid album start to finish. I'd forgotten how strong side A was - just about all of it it got decent airplay when this was released. Side B slows down some but finishes with the gem of a title track.

Þessi plata er og verður alltaf besta pabbarokk í heimi. Hér er í boði stuð, ást, angurværð og margt fleira. Mæli með. Toppplata!

Why worry y otros grandes éxitos.

An all-timer. Even though Money for Nothing and Walk of Life were the big singles off this album, the best tracks are So Far Away and Your Latest Trick. Every song on this record comes from a different genre, which is something you don't really get anymore. I miss albums like this...a full album that plays like a compilation. Rate: 5/5 Favorite Track: Your Latest Trick

So so good

10/10 I’ve heard this before but it’s still amazing probably one of my favorite albums of the year

Such an amazing album.

Totally classic album.

It was 1985, and Mark Knopfler was in the mood for super-stardom. The result of that (successful) endeavour is this album, one of the best released in the 80s and at the time a showcase for CD sound quality. The songs are a bit more commercial than on previous Dire Straits albums, with Knopflers guitar work rightly being the centerpiece of every track. Every song sounds different here, and there is great variantion among the tracks, so it's hard to get tired listening to this. So Far Away is a moody opener, while Money for Nothing is the obvious mega hit with one of the most memorable guitar riffs ever. Walk Of Life contains some feel-good Rock'n'Roll, while Your Latest Trick ventures into Late Night Blues. Why Worry is a nice (albeit a bit long) guitar ballad, and Ride Across the River is a synth-heavy partisan tale with a reggae vibe. In The Man's Too Strong, we find a folk/country story about the war (most probably the Falkland war; a subject that features greatly in the album's second half). One World is blues rock with slap bass; it's the only track on the weaker side, but thankfully it is also the shortest. Brothers in Arms (the title track) is a brooding, yet beautiful anti-war ballad and a great closing track to a magnificient masterpiece of an album. This is Dire Straits at their peak. They never sounded better. 5/5

Shoulda learned to play the guitar

This is a great album. Back in the day, I could imagine taking a tumbler of my favorite adult beverage, turning the lights out, lean back in a char and listen to this with headphones. The production value is great. Musicians know how to get the sound they are looking for out of their instruments. Lyrics tell a story of a moment in time. How many artist can have a song about an appliance delivery person lamenting about rockstars. At the same time complaining that they have it too easy and regretting not putting more practice in to have the opportunity to be a rockstar. This album is deserving to be on this list.

Paar geweldige nummers, verder prima.

Producers don’t get enough credit. The production on this album is as good as it gets.

Not a bad one in the bunch. Great album. Will always remember the season 2 finale of West Wing when I hear the title track.

Packed to the brim with classic Jams So Far Away is a vibe Money for nothing's first riff is unforgettable Walk of Life is one of those songs that are like a warm hug Your latest Trick is great for driving around Why Worry is a little slow for my taste but good Ride Across the River is interesting The Man's too Strong is a cool song, also that buildup is great One World gets me Schmoovin' Brothers in arms, a classic, a hymn for peace

Amazing chill vibe on this album.

Brilliant album. Folky, rocky, mellow, charged up, it's got it all.

Classic album. I'll listen to this many times

My third favorite of their albums, which is still 5+ stars

Best Album of all time. It’s my #1 Album. I have it on my wall. No bad songs. Least good song is a 9/10 minimum. Enough said. Definitely listen to this one before you die.

I didn't think this was one of their better albums until I played it and realised it has half a dozen outstanding tracks on it. Still not my favourite (Making movies) but brilliant all the same.

Well...........it's an icon. .......but is it any good? Very 80's The title track is an echo from the 'Love over Gold' vibe and the rest on this album is poppier and more accessible perhaps. I prefer the earlier albums but this is still epic. I have to give it 5 stars not because I like it the best but because I recognise how good it is.

great album, a lot great classics and a lot of verity in it. vocals of very good and instrumental is also very good

Love this album! Every song is great, so many different influences, such great, smooth 80s guitar. Knopfler is king for a reason! Really wish he didn't have to say f****t on Money For Nothing. Because that song has probably my favorite beginning of any song ever. Epitome of 80s music in my opinion - even has a guest appearance from Sting.

Superb

Incredible.

I haven’t heard this in a long time. What a great album! Lyrics, music, arrangements, performance: all top quality. A true classic!

Classic rock album. Great vocal M.Knopfler. ideal album just to sit back and relax... Perfect album to come back to again and again.

Perfect album cover to cover. Great crisp guitar from Knopfler and gang, learned Sting did the background vocals on Money for Nothing, Walk of Life can apparently end any movie, grooving in the mid album and finishing strong with the title track.

Amazing album. Awesome guitar.

Listening to this album brings back such fond memories of when I was young. When going on holiday, this was always one of my selections when choosing tapes to listen to in the car. However, the 5 star rating is not based on nostalgia or anything similar. This is truly a great album where 5 stars is perhaps not enough. Every track on the album is so strong - not one weak link. Great sounds overwritten with brilliant lyrics. This is up there as one of the greatest albums of all time

Wow, what an album. I wasn't very familiar with Dire Straits before listening to this album. I honestly didn't expect a lot of their songs to be this jazzy and melancholic. It is an album so full of feeling. Great one.

A classic! Thanks for making me listening to it, again!

This one's complicated. "Brothers In Arms" has always been my mother's favorite song, and I can't fault her for it. It's atmospheric and melancholic, reaching emotional heights that most of the other tracks in the second half fall short of. Anyway, I listened to a LOT of Dire Straits all throughout my childhood. A lot of the 'best of' tracks came from this album. And those are great. Incredibly catchy melodies, and I finally understand that these are probably the reason why I ever considered playing the guitar (I was bad at it). I think So Far Away kinda sucks, I've always thought Walk of Life was just a bad Sultans of Swing, some other tracks bored me so much I didn't even remember what they were called. There's a homophobic slur on Money for Nothing... but that song is still Money for Nothing. And above all, the title track is actually stunning, and I've been humming it for days now. Yeah, it's hard denying that.

OK, the first thing to talk about is the use of homophobic slurs. This is from the early 80s, and there sure was a different attitude back then. If the use of the slur is what puts you off this music, I'd say you've kinda missed the point of the song. That said, we can review the album. Which is excellent. Genuinely brilliant. Local lads done good.

My second Dire Straits album in three days, and I'm left to wonder how in the world I haven't listened to this group before. The guitar work is top notch, the songs are catchy, the vocals are superb, it just all comes together to make a noteworthy and memorable album. Mostly rocking, sometimes jazzy, sometimes soft, the album dips into different genres and tempos with the instrumentals and has a nice variety. The only negative I can come up with is that I hadn't listened to this album sooner!

I’ve been a DS fan since I was a child (“I want my MTV…” guitar riff…. Video. I mean, Money for Nothing is probably an actual neural pathway.) Lovely album. Hits, a little mellow here and there, and tat beautiful voice and super clean/mellow guitar sound (not a fuzz pedal in sight!) Love Making Movies more, but this is easily a 4.5 album. Rounding up ‘cause I can!

Ooh I liked the other dire straits album… The album opens with the song so far away a rip roaring bass line that suddenly gets overshadowed by the poppy guitars and singing. While I wouldn’t call this band a “ proper pop” group this is much poppier than I’ve had before. It’s good though decent lyrics and well produced. Following this is the song money for nothing it starts slowly with the repetition of “ I want my mtv” for just over a minute, it slowly feeds into an electronic rock sound by what I think it seems to be a song about tv consumerism it’s good though just the intro was a little unnecessary. Walk of life ( like sultans of swing on the self titled) is a song that I only recognised by the synth bit, it’s a good enough song though pretty much an old style rock and roll song with a synth line layered over it. Good song! The first minute of Your latest trick (like the spotify image) is slow and gloomy then after that minute it forms into a slower “ jazzier” track with the saxophone throughout. It’s a good song but the saxophone isn’t one of my favourite instruments but it’s the key instrument to the song and without it the song would feel empty. Why worry, kinda sounds hopeful in a way like all of the gloominess of your latest trick is gone. It would seen like an afterthought of that song but it’s 8 minutes long, a time stamp when executed well is awesome and while it’s good it just feels like a 5 minuter, it’s still beautiful and a brilliant sonic though. Side two starts with ride across the river and it’s tribal drumming and flute work. The lyrics aren’t my favourite but this is still a great song just primarily for the fact that it shows verity of the sounds portrayed in this album and how different it is to the previous 5. The man’s too strong follows on well from the last track it’s much folkier than the others, Until it explodes in the chorus this would have easily been my least favourite but as it progresses the song shows a true epic-ness that the other songs don’t portray as strongly! One world almost feels like disco blues quite cool to be fair, it’s the most similar to the poppieness of the first three songs but still has a cool enough groove to make it special. Also the spotify artwork is really awesome and fitting to these songs. The album closes off with the title track it’s sorta a blend of the thunderous sounds of the man’s too strong and the gloominess of your latest trick. It turns into this slow emotional closer apparently an anti war song sung by a solider it’s a really good song! I recommend going through spotify on the initial listen for this as for the most part it shows the story each song tells and for every song it has a short clip for it. Wow two 5’s in two days ( the other one was Screamidelica) that’s cool!

Fantastic

1985, what a year! And Mark Knopfler is still rocking!

Amazing

A really easy-listening classic. Knoplfler- with his barnstormer yet calming guitar licks really make it. They don’t try to overdo it or complicate things

Várias músicas que eu já conhecia e não sabia o nome Todas sensacionais. 5/5

"Brothers in Arms" is a very definitive pop rock album from the eights, with a collection of hit compositions, molded by Mark Knopfler's guitar. You can't talk about the mid eighties without citing "So Far Away", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life" and "Your Latest Trick", the first four tracks on this records - quite an opener. Lirically, songs tackle themes like the perception of the working class and the stupidity of militarism, but there are also love songs - written in a very iconic Dire Straits way, full of metaphors. It's a very complex album, almost minimalistic in the amount of details that you can find while listening to it, and it never gets old (except when the lyrics cite MTV as a music television or uses the world 'faggot', two things that got very and poorly old).

An old favorite. Good to listen to it again.

It is a perfect album from start to finish. 5/5.

5 étoiles en skippant walk of life

allez ca rechiale

03/08/2022 Great album. So many childhood memories flashed back of driving around with my dad with the windows down and the warm summer sun. Nice to remember the good times.

Fantastic

The Album's Too Strong

sensacional

I'm slightly biased on this one because most of the album features in one of my favourite live recordings of all time (Live in Sydney 1986) and I do think a few of the slower songs work better in a live context. That said I do still love this album and it has at least 4 of my fave Dire Straits tracks on it. The artwork is iconic too.

Time to get back in this horse ... Dire Straits are a phenomenal band that I definitely didn't appreciate enough when younger. Everyone appreciates they are a bunch of incredible musicians, but Mark Knopfler's deep voice really elevates the entire thing. Without the vocals and story telling, I suspect the album might not hold my attention like it does. Brother in Arms is my favourite

👍👍👍

Despite the album dropping off in the second half, there isn't anything wrong with this. All except The Man's Two Strong and One World are fantastic and even the mentioned lesser tracks are decent. Money for Nothing was the one I knew before but really came away liking So Far Away and Your Latest Trick. A classic album

Of its time but one of the best of its time. Pop rock with a mastery over both parts of the genre

I love this album and spent some happy teenage hours working out the sax part of Latest Trick and playing along. My least favorite song is Money for Nothing, mostly I think from overexposure and a terrible video; otherwise this album is perfect. In fact, I'm going to listen again right now.

Cool! A sound its I hearded when I was young...

Great album!

loveddddd it

This album feels like an instant classic - thoroughly enjoyed it.

One of my most favourite albums of all time, and it still sounds brilliant all these years later.

A perfect album. Mixed perfectly, too. The synth has even aged well. Impressive. Truly a work of art.

Excellent

Absolutely awesome! One or two songs sound so 80s they border on pastiche, but still enjoyable. Title track, walk of life, latest trick, so far away, and of course, money for nothing are all-timers. What an album.

I wore this album out on my turntable freshman year of college. Such a great album. The thing I think is most interesting about this album is that every track is completely unique, and yet the whole album is cohesive. Money for Nothing and Walk of Life were the big hits, and they're great songs, but for me it's the closing title track that is the all-time classic. The silky smooth guitar and the heartbreaking lyrics get me every time. 4.5 stars, rounding up to 5.

Traumalbum

Knopfler is a king.

This album is soooooo good. I enjoyed every single song on here except one, which is Money For Nothing, but I've never liked that song that much. But it's a classic, and it won't take my score down from less than a five. Highlights: So Far Away, Walk Of Life, Your Latest Trick, Why Worry?

Would have been a 10, but its missing Sultans and Romeo and Juliet

Classic in ever sense. No filler in this album. Mark Knopfler does his thing on guitar. The only weakness would be his singing.

Lots of hits. Even the ones I didn't know were pretty good.

5 stars - thats all!!!

Great album, not new to me, love every song there

Absolutely great album!

80s delight

This is my 'first' album. Does that factor into the score , probably, do I care, not really.

Easily in my Top 10 bands of all time and has a shit load of huge classics at the top but does lose a bit of its momentum at the back end. Five stars anyway for THE greatest intro of all time on Money For Nothing. Who comes up with that shit. Also never knew that it was Sting singing it.

I loved this album when I first hear it in the 80’s and still love it now. The clarity of the guitar in so far away, the sax in your latest trick and Knopflers gravelly vocals throughout. Ride the river, man’s too strong and one world don’t seem to really fit in the album, they’re good tracks but seem to be a bit of an afterthought. Definitely one of my all time top 30 albums

5/5 quoi dire de plus. A écouter peut importe vos goûts en musique. Un cclassique

This took me back to my college days, as it was one of the very first albums I had on DVD, and I would listen to it over and over again,

A favorite from back in the day

So excited this was one of my favorite albums in high school. Probably haven’t listened to the album from beginning to end in over 20 years. The opening to “Money For Nothing” still gives me chills. “Walk of Life” makes everything seem better. But it is the rest of the album that I’m glad to hear again. “You’re Latest Trick.“ “The Man’s Too Strong” should be heard in the context of the album. And how the hell have I made it through the last 5 years without listening to “Why Worry?” “Brothers In Arms” - a perfect closing. Just sat in silence for a while after it ended. This reminds me why I have to get back to listening to albums again.

This is a classic beyond classics. All killer mo filler! Love it.

Always outstanding!

Absolute BANDGER always was going to be a 5* from me. Love Dire Straits but possibly never an album start to finish, but this did not disappoint

Classic album that I loved. Favourite track: Money for nothing

Really good album. I love the saxaphone song

Dá uma leve caída entre Why Worry e Ride Across the River, mas de resto é só música muito boa

Brilliant!!

Easy 5.

Fabulous

De los primeros vinilos que me compré. Lo escuché infinitas veces.

A delicious 80s pop record. Every song is a delight. One of best pop records in the 80s.

"Your latest trick" i "Brothers in arms" són les meves preferides, immortals. Encara avui, casi 40 anys després, segueix sonant actual i empatic, aclaparador.

Buen disco. Bastantes canciones lentas.

Some great DS hits on this one like Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, and So Far Away. Knofler just killing it everywhere. A few more mellow/clean tunes too.

Great album

Discazo

Mi fav: "Money for Nothing". Un final un tanto melancólico con la canción titular, pero igual, creo que me queda. 9.5/10

A beautiful album that brings back a lot of great memories.

Classic

6 Må være i enhver plate/ strømmeliste.

Your latest trick - cool saxophone, remember from somewhere possibly

Det finnes ikke nok stjerner å gi.

Mark Knopfler bae

07/13 Classic album. For as many times as I've heard the song "Walk of Life" either at work and on the radio, I never knew it's title or who it was from until now

Bangier za bengierem, kwintesencja dopracowanego 80's brzemienia

This takes me back to the summer before I started high school. The singles were on the radio constantly and my mum had bought the record. To honour this I played that very vinyl copy that I first heard in 1985. Much maligned for some reason, I do rather like it and whilst it's not a bona fide classic album as such and did nothing to further the course of popular music it's still a perfectly enjoyable listen. And there's also a lot, lot, worse included in the 1001 than this.

Me encanta Dire Straits.

Some hits, some misses. But the hits definitely make up for the misses

Arguably a terrible album cover, but got some half-decent guitar playing so I’ll let them off

It’s a good one. Nostalgic. Neutral.

Was ready to automatically give 5 stars based on the singles alone. Never listened to the deep cuts before, and unfortunately they do sound kind of dated. Not having Money for nothing as the opening track with that extended intro baffles me. Money/Walk/Brothers are some of my favorite songs though, dad as I am.

really caught me off guard. way better sonically than i was expecting and the musicality was crazy. great opener and then it goes into money for nothing ???? and then walk of life ?????? obviously great tracks but the rest of the album was way better than expected. solid 8.5/10

A good record with a couple great songs.

Some worthwhile guitar solos- some songs I know and love from growing up, total classic. Added some to my library

dreamy, floaty, moody, introspective, upbeat, pop-rockin, blues-rockin honky-tonk songs.

Que cosa tan buena que pedazo de TEMON es money for nothingy que buen guitarrista es knopfler!!!! 9/10

Good, very creative. I had the album in high school and listened to it a lot. That seems to make it sound a bit dated, but I don't think that it is dated. I didn't realize at the time how much influence Bob Dylan had on Mark Knopfler. You can definitely hear it.

I do like how Dire Straits don't follow any genre type and do a great job, some great tracks on this album

Some very familiar tracks, and some that were new to me. Really enjoyed this listen, and to put a band name to a few songs that have just existed in the background of so many moments.

I only knew Money for Nothing before listening to this album, but I enjoyed it much more than I expected. Mark Knopfler’s guitar tone was easily the highlight for me, especially on the beautiful title track Brothers in Arms. I had always assumed Dire Straits were an American band because of their bluesy sound.

So Far Away and Money For Nothing were an instant hit for me. Walk of Life is also memorable, though more so for the music video rather than the song itself. The album got a bit drawn out in the middle but picked up again once it got to Man's Too Strong. Brothers in Arms is a beautiful conclusion to the album and has some wonderful guitar work. The only Dire Straits song I had heard previously was Sultans of Swing, but listening to this album has enticed me to explore their other works.

Quite okay

Really good w some solid bangers.

Honestly, I liked this album more as it went on. Some solid, easy listening. I'd give this a 3.5, but I'm okay with a 4.

Very silky very strange

Hot me with that guitar Markie

Ok… maybe I do like 80s sounds and there are more exceptions than I thought. Money for nothing rips. Walk of life? Banger. Some tunes didn’t bring the same energy… but going 3.8

Solid album - great musicianship. Brings me back to the old MTV days. A solid 4 - would definitely listen to this more!

Strong start, I liked the first few songs more than the latter ones but overall good

6/10 alright album

Listened on: Spotify Listening experience: Over two sessions, driving home Such a strong start with 4 hits in a row. I enjoyed the next 5 too, but had not heard them before this. Just a joyful listening experience. Your Latest Trick has the smoothest saxophone I’ve ever heard. Velvet to the ear. Will listen again for sure.

Great opening few tracks and like brothers in arms but not so great in the middle

Classic

Memories

Money for nothing and walk of life were peak

Yes! Finally.

Loved it

Classic. Front loaded with bangers, but the entire album is an amazing listen.

Album redeemed

Certainly their most commercial album. They got to play their guitars on the MTV. Not their best album but still pretty solid.

This takes me back. Everyone seemed to have a copy of this in the 80's. It's a classic. It seemed to coincide with CD's becoming available. I remember my mate (Ian Clark, he had a fucking huge nose) got a CD copy of this album from his nan for his birthday but didn't have a CD player, so he had to beg his parents to buy him one. We listened to this album and then turned the CD player upside-down and listened to it again. We were more amazed by the CD playing ok when the player was upside down than the contents of the actual album itself. Good times. I also banged his sister listening to this album a few weeks later, needless to say Ian wasn't present that time!

Good album - high four

The sound of my youth! Love this record, upon relistening it kind of falls back on side B, a bit too instrumental, but it still holds up.

Buenas melodías, álbum relajante.

Starts with the three bangers, and then promptly falls into a deep sleep. Do not listen to Why Worry while driving! These guys were a nice little pop-rock band. Very, very '80's, and very, very nondescript. But those hits were certified smash hits.

Good, consistently solid rock that breezes by. Fun times all round.

I am SHOCKED by the popularity of this album. It's great easy listening.

Very cool, the album is great overall, but individually the songs are not what I would listen to everyday
