Masterpiece

Awesome again.

I remember buying this tape as an 11-year-old and being disappointed that every song didn’t rock as hard as Money for Nothing. But that disappointment faded with maturity. Mark Knopfler is a master of his craft.

Amazing album. Ballads, smooth music, hard rock, and jumpy tunes all in one.

What a second half! Truly captures that vaguely spiritual mid-80s action movie introspective scene in all its tender ambivalent glory.

clean, slick and cinematic, dire straits' fifth album had high ambitions from the start, not only featuring a digital sheen throughout, but releasing as a cd-first album. it's an audiophile's wet dream. listeners will really love the amount of depth when it comes to the songwriting and production. it's definitely 1980s in terms of sound, but it's not overtly cheesy or tired. it's a must have for people testing out their stereos in their house or car.

One of the best sounding and produced albums of all time it's the non singles that really shine on this album. Great album to listen to in the dark when relaxing; love it

Alleen maar goede nummers.

Such a great record

- Elsker dire straits, dette albumet spesifikt - Tror dette var albumet sim introduserte meg til rock - your latest trick er ekte schmell - litt kjedelig album cover, men slik er alle dire straits coverene - beste gitarspillern noen sinne

Almost perfect, classic upon classic, one of the best songs of all time finishing the album

WHAT AN ALBUM Big fan of the blues / rock / jazz influences. Let's go Mark Knopfler on guitar. Excellent story telling too. Only 5*

Просто отличный альбом, не могу назвать его жанр - что-то на стыке рока, кантри и 80х с уникальным стилем Марка

I have been a Dire Straits fan for a long time and this album was my gateway back in the 80s. Although I haven’t listened to this album in its entirety in years, it was refreshing to hear it again. As with all Dire Straits albums, there are some great rockers and then some very jazzy and folk like tracks. You have to be a dedicated fan to appreciate all of the styles Mark and company present. I love the changes from hard rockers like “Money For Nothing” to jazzy numbers like “Why Worry”. It’s a great album from start to finish and it contains one of my favorite songs of all time “Walk of Life”. Other favorites are “Your Latest Trick”, “One Man’s Too Strong”, “So Far Away”, and of course “Money For Nothing”

Vendió una barbaridad y con todo merecimiento. Money for nohting ha quedado como clásico absoluto. Walk of life, Brothers in arms, So far away o Your latest trick también. Disco de los grandes de los 80.

Has been in my rotation and one of my favorite albums

So close to 5 stars, but the songs Ride Across the River, The Man's too strong and One World let it down for me. Probably the most significant drop in quality I've experienced in an album. Remove those three and it's a damn masterpiece. Luckily the album ends on a high with Brothers in Arms track. Incredible album though. Gorgeous guitar, and there's something about Mark Knopfler's vocals (especially on Money For Nothing, so cocky) that are so satisfying to listen to. The high points on this album are considerably good. I should add I've heard this album many times and already consider it a favourite. It sounds best in the summer. Beautiful stuff. Actually, fuck it, take my 5 stars. This is too good.

Beautiful album, even after first listen! Lots of inspiration from Sting throughout this album as well as David Bowie's Hunky Dory in Money For Nothing. My favourite album from Dire Straits for some time now! From the story telling in Your Latest Trick to the uplifting melody of So Far Away, this album is simply beautifully crafted and represents perfectly the passage of time between friends and family

An all time classic and a quintessential 80's album. The production and sound are immaculate and I prefer the second half, especially the anti-war sentiments of "One World" and the haunting, gorgeous title track.

I mean, cmon. Gotta be one of the best classic rock records ever, almost on the strength of the first three tracks alone. "Money For Nothing" is a certified banger and the keys in "Walk of Life" give it a shiny nostaglic feel. Mark Knopfler is a terrific songwriter and even better guitarist, just such a fun listen every time. "Why Worry?" is an underrated song. The title track makes me want to rewatch The Americans

This takes me back to being grade school aged in the 90s’s riding in the back of my aunt’s 80-something Mustang listening to rock music from her collection of cassette tapes. Money for Nothing was a pretty instant favorite, and remains one of my favorites today. Instant 5/5 for nostalgia’s sake if nothing else, but really this is a great album.

Masterpiece!!!

Great one.

Rock, 1985 -> 5

Classic album, super accessible and extremely fun. Mark Knopfler provides some of the catchiest and most infectios guoat performances of all time. The album is filled with satire and commentary while also having some heartfelt moments throughout. I'm very familiar with this, but I don't mind another listen. So Far Away Deep and layered sound, the guitars take some interesting twists and turns. Expressive vocal performance while remaining solemn and calm. Great chorus. Sounds very warm and inviting, makes for a lovely atmosphere. Great. 4.5/5 Money For Nothing Timeless track, even as it contains plenty of references that are pretty of the time. This still gets played at house parties to this day. One of the very few 8 minute plus tracks that doesn't get your AUX privilages permanentely revoked. I don't think anyone can deny that the intro to this track with that fantastic crunchy distorted guitar is absolutely iconic. Probably one of the most recognizable riffs of all time. There's some dated language there, but comes across as satire. Extremely catchy chorus. Great jam section towards the final quarter of the track. Classic. 5/5 Walk Of Life Another straight banger. Iconic intro, with some of the most recognizable keyboard riffs of all. The rhythm to this track is extremely light hearted and danceable. Has one of the top 5 "woohoo"s of all time. Instant mood lifter. Fun to sing along to. Classic. 5/5 Your Latest Trick Very pleasant intro, very nice interplay between the brass and electric guitar. Great sax sound. Tranquil and floaty atmosphere. Very evocative lyrics, they create their very own world which is really easy to get lost in. Great. 4.5/5 Why Worry Beautiful calming guitar riff. Has a very reassuring energy to it. Love those pretty keys and the subtle bass. Interesting composition, especially in the extended instrumental bits. The vocals have a sort of lullaby quality to them. Takes its time while introducing new elements, keeping it fresh despite its long runtime. Great. 4.5/5 Ride Across The River Love this instrumental, the bass, the keys the haunting guitar in the background and the distant trumpet all add together for a fantastic atmospheric piece which just feels so resinant. There's a great combination of sound which keeps building upon itself as the track goes. The crisp guitar in contrast with the deep and moody bass just feels like it has so much depth and emotion behind it. The vocal melody is very effective, working with the instrumentation to make it feel so alive. Love the tropical insect sounds in the background. The themes of war go well with the moodier and sadder feeling of the track, really fits the "Brothers in Arms" theme. Fantastic. 5/5 The Man's Too Strong Love the more acoustic stripped back production. Reflective political storytelling. Great drama with the loud guitars. Feels mournful and contemplative. Good. 4/5 One World Immediately love the bass, the guitar is also extremely good of course. I enjoy the groovier more tempo focused track at this point in the album. Has a very fun vocal structure in the chorus. The lyrics work well in contrast with the bounciness of the track, they almost feel deliberatly hidden avoiding cliches. Great. 4.5/5 Brothers In Arms About as effective an anti-war song as you'll ever get. Implies the horror, while never distracting from the bonds that are built in extreme survivorship situations. Contrasts the human connections we make with the meaninglesness of war. Timeless guitar solo. A beautiful track which encapsulates the themes of the album perfectly. One of the greatest. 5/5 This one is quite special for all the right reasons. Throughout my life I've heard songs from it on long trips in the car, in the background at family events, and at parties with friends. It's been there all my life and each time I hear it in full I discover something new about it. Sure nostalgia drives my love for this quite substantially, but the moments in which the music is played are often as important as the music itself. A masterclass in creating resonant music that capture a specific feeling so perfectly. And I don't think it's controversial to say that the musicianship and the songwriting on here is fantastic either. I feel the reason why it has stuck around for so long is because it's really good. It's beautifully paced, has a good balance between fun accessible tracks, artistic undertakings and emotionally grounded tracks which keeps it applicable for many different moods, while also keeping it interesting during a full listen. No matter the style the instrumentals stay of the highest quality, composed cleverly and performed with emotion and style. This leads to a very consistent project containing not only the often praised guitars that have become almost synonymous with Dire Straits, but also moments featuring trumpet, bass, keyboard, drums and more. All which provide fantastic moments of their own or in tandem with each other, creating a varied sonic pallatte which can surprise at any turn. Even the vocals, while never grandiose or spectacular provide a lot of relatability as well as providing passionate and emotive performances that enhance the often political or commentary laden lyrics. This album works in all the ways it should, and it's to me at least very obvious why it deserves to be on this list. 5/5 Fave track. Ride Across The River

This is very clean classic rock.

Jättemycket klassiker.

Dire straits cha Nome öppis ned and zwar schlächti Lieder z mache. Brother in Arms esch debi eis vo ehrene beschte Albe. Es werd nie Langwiilig ond voller ironische Melodie.

fun joyful 9.5 out of 10

Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands of all time. Confession: I have not really had them on my radar for a number of years. Just so much to hear and discover that they kind of fell by the wayside. Listening to this album made me realize that they are among an elite of the elite: those few bands that make an "ordinary" album feel like a greatest hits album; every time! On my very short list of bands who pull this off, they are the one with the least likely fit -- dad voice lead singer, quite rock oriented, although it has huge blues roots and you can feel that throughout. There is just something special, even sublime in the Dire Straits "package" that is timeless and wonderful!

I grew up listening to this album. In my heart, it is one of the best ever.

sehr gut

Partially listened before Favourite tracks: Money for Nothing, Your Latest Trick, Why Worry?, Brothers in Arms

perhaps biased but this is fantastic. The range between first and second songs should be all you need to hear

Great album. I believe it was one of the first Cds available commercially! The distinctive sounds goes throughout love it!

The masters of understated greatness.

Beautiful, timeless, masterclass in song writing and guitar.

A true classic from much simpler times in my life as a 14-year-old kid without a care in the world.

I've been introduced to this album by my dad, but only to a few songs. This was my first time listening to all of the songs, and I liked all of them. Such a good album, driven by a certain mood, and the sounds are amazing!

Contrary to youthful believe This country music brings relief Such wild licks A riff that freaking sticks Enjoyed this immensely over the weekend

Holy crap that was a shred rock fest

Love me some brothers in arms

Loved this album when I was in high school. Still love it today. One of my comfort album during awkward teenage times. And "Walk of Life" remains my go-to karaoke song (since I can't hit the notes on "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" anymore). And for you folks in the back, Money for Nothing is a satire. Still jarring to hear that slur thrown out there -- but a word's mere existence is not reflective of what that word actually means in context. (And I can't wait for the pearl clutching when y'all hit Randy Newman's "Good Ol' Boys" on here...) Dire Straits, like Steely Dan, is one of those bands that I fully expect the Kids Today to start rediscovering -- because it's a peaceful break amidst our current madness.

How can I rate this 6 stars? 10 stars? Phenomenal. Dire Straits is always so good. Mark Knopfler is amazing (and not just because he has a pf in his name). The guitar is always so clean.

Something interesting I just read about this album is that it was one of the first to be digitally recorded and helped kick off CD culture with its high sales. Back in the early ’90s, when I first started collecting tapes, the Money for Nothing album was in my top 10. That song was actually one of the tracks that helped shape my early taste in music. I also just learned that Money for Nothing was actually a greatest hits compilation, and this was the album that song originally came from. Either way, Brothers in Arms is a solid album from beginning to end. Most of the songs feel familiar, and the album has such a smooth, consistent flow that makes it very cohesive

Fantastic album start to finish.

All-time classic. Still one of the best albums ever made.

Very nice

I've loved this album since my cousin bought it back in 85-86 and I put it in my grandpa's record player. Great all around guitar work and exquisite bass lines.

Awesome album, with bangers all the way through. Knopfler’s guitars are never too over the top present but also never boring.

Garbage.

I'm pretty sure if this was new to me today, I'd think: 1. Ugh 80s soft rock. 2. Too much sax and too cheesy. 3. They all go on too long. 4. OK fine, the guitar work is great. But there are very few albums I've heard more in my lifetime than Brothers In Arms. Countless long car journeys and dozens of Sunday roast dinners spent as a child with this as the soundtrack. So of course there's some nostalgia involved but while I probably can't be truly objective about this, I've actually not listened to it much as an adult and I had forgotten just how good a guitarist Mark Knopfler is. There's also something to be said about letting a song breathe. While a lot of rock music in the 90s and 00s seemed to be based around a 3 or 4-minute template, the tendency here to go for seven or eight minutes might have annoyed me on something less familiar but if you have the time, it's great to sit back and let an epic like Why Worry or the title track gently unfold on your ears. I also have to give a nod to the fact that as a 6 or 7 year old, I dedicated hours and hours of my life to perfecting my air guitar rendition of Money For Nothing and it was definitely an inspiration to me taking up the real actual guitar soon after. So nostalgia wins today, the rating goes with the heart but the head is not exactly arguing.

Makes me wanna play guitar

The Good: We are warned that the straits are dire… The Bad: Finding out there is nothing Dire about the Straits… The Ugly: having to sell off the outfit I purchased to travel the straits that were supposed to be dire… I know, I know, the above is not up to my usual standard of joviality, but I have a great reason for this, and that is that I’ve procrastinated writing this review for over a month… Why, you might ask? Well, reading the overall bashing that people are giving this album, I had to wait till I calmed down before lambasting all those fools I stumble over the use of the term “faggot” in the song Money For Nothing… This is a quintessential ‘80s album, it also just happens to be one of the greatest albums ever, easily Top-20. The Dire Straits were massive due to this album, even if there are fans of the band who believe that this is not their best album. For me, this album was my introduction to more guitar oriented music, and what a great teacher Mark K is… Yeah buddy, it’s his own hair… The title song is what it is, a 10. Walk of Life made everyone want to tune into MTV just to see the video, another 10. Sting jumpin’ in to lend a hand, another 10. The opening track a perfect intro, you guess it, another 10. And then there are the fillers, who, IMHO, all deserve a 9 or 10… You guessed it, 5* and to all those cry babies who can’t stand 1 word being used… pay attention to the lyrics, you ignorant fools, and maybe you will learn something.

LOVE Dire Straits

Damn!!! These guys are good!!!

Easily the most embarrassing five star rating I'm going to give. This milk-white, MOR slice of dad rock isn't cool, that's for sure. It does, however, transport me back to being about 12 years old, playing snooker with my dad on a five foot long table with paint on it and a significant camber towards one pocket. I don't know that I was ready for just what a nostalgic trip this would be to be honest. Leaving aside the nostalgia, there are still objectively tremendous moments on this, from Latest Trick, through the beautifully corny Why Worry all the way to the atmospheric closer of the title track. It's a huge shame about the homophobic slurs that ruin Money For Nothing, which is also the weakest song regardless. Still, it's 1995, I'm drinking tea and playing air guitar to Walk of Life with a child's snooker cue. Happy days.

Six blade knive is opzich al 5 sterren waard.

One of the greatest albums of all time

Immediate 5 Star rating. One of my all time favorite albums, not a bad song on it. People know the hits but it's the glue tracks that hold this together and really make it shine. This album was MASSIVE when it was released. It rode the Mtv wave with huge videos that propelled them to stardom and made Dire Straits a household name at the time. Out of the gates with hits like "So Far Away", "Money For Nothing" & "Walk Of Life" then into beautiful songs like "Your Latest Trick" (amazing saxophone!), "Why Worry" & "Brothers In Arms". It's a really good album. I don't dole out many 5's but this is one for sure, it's got no weak spots. It has hits galore, staying power, radio play, cross-generational impact and amazing guitar work. *****

EIn großartiges Album mit vielen bekannten Songs. Definitiv eines der Top-Alben aller Zeiten. 5/5

I know that album cohesion is not a fair metric, but these songs all sound like they could be different bands. They're all great though.

As I make it further and further into this list of albums, I keep checking off some of my favorites that are featured on the list, and today brings me another one of my favorites, and one of my last remaining favorites from my favorite decade, Brothers in Arms. I’m very familiar with this album, and one of my crowning achievements as a father has been getting my three-year-old to sing along to “Walk of Life.” I’m really excited to listen to this today, and if I weren’t taking care of my kids by myself today, I’d fire up the vinyl of it, but I’ll have to settle for Spotify and some headphones while the kids nap. Listening to this album today reaffirmed my love for it, but I was shocked that I came out the other side of this album thinking that Dire Straits’ self-titled album might be a better album. Regardless, I love listening to Mark Knopfler sing and play guitar, and Brothers in Arms does a great job of showcasing the breadth of Knopfler’s talent as a musician. The album isn’t terribly cohesive, and features quite a few different styles, but I think it still works because it all sounds really incredible. I read that this was one of the first albums to use a digital tape machine, and I was impressed that it doesn’t sound over-produced or too busy. Musically, I enjoy the first side of the album a bit more, but I think the second side of the album is stronger from a songwriting perspective. “Walk of Life” is hands down my favorite song on the album, and one of my favorite songs from the eighties. The keyboard riff from “Walk of Life” will always lift my spirits, and it meshes so well with the guitar playing and lyrics of the song. “Money for Nothing” is great too; songs that get a lot of air time on classic rock radio tend to not hold up with me, but this song still does. I really love Sting’s vocals on “Money for Nothing,” and I think his voice contrasts with Knopfler’s in a really great way. The guitar playing is fantastic too, and the opening minutes of this song are incredibly fun. Other tracks from this album that I really enjoy are “So Far Away,” “Your Latest Trick,” “The Man’s Too Strong,” and “Brothers in Arms.” This is a fantastic album from start to finish, and I’m delighted that I got to listen to it today.

This album was a real bright spot in the changing landscape of early 80s music. Still a family favorite for long road trips - the best of Dire Straits!

I love a solid 1-2 punch to start an album and this has it with So Far Away and then Money For Nothing, its iconic riff worming its way into your brain. The guitar tone is still incredible. Walk of Life is next, one of the most feel good songs they've done and a firm favourite. Then we slow the pace down with Your Latest Trick, a sultry sax driven piece. The second half stays mostly in this slower and more melancholy place. The meandering Ride Across The River is particularly interesting, and One World with its funky bass licks. The poignant title track is a perfect closer and never fails to make me misty eyed. I already knew I loved this album but it's worth noting how many difference genres they pull from and how dynamic the sound is. The band sadly never really built on this, but it's an all timer.

Peak dadrock. Knopfler and co really bring it home here and find their solid pop rock sound after darting between genres and feels on previous albums. I think that the first side is definitely stronger, not to say that the second half is bad but the strength of the title track can make it feel like you're sitting through the opening act before your favourite band when you listen to the second side. The album slows down as it goes on and it works perfectly for me. But there are no skips on this album, the production flirts with being corny 80s English music but manages to walk the line well. What is there to say about the instrumentation other than Mark Knopfler is probably one of the greatest guitarists to ever live? This album probably also has the single hardest single and music video in the form of MONEY FOR NOTHING. I cannot in good conscience give this album less than a 5. Highlights: So Far Away, Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life, Your Latest Trick, Why Worry, One World, Brothers In Arms

I like this album a lot. Pretty solid the whole way through. Money for Nothing is a landmark in music.

One of the greats! Very excited to listen start to finish and see which ones I'd not heard before. So Far Away - cute. Love 'tired of makin' out on the telephone'; very wholesome wording/self-censorship haha. Money For Nothing - I mean what a classique. Excellent. Walk of Life - one of my favourite songs ever. Your Latest Trick - what a find - really cool. Why Worry? - very sweet. Ride Across The River - weakest so far. The Man's Too Strong - not great; too country for me too. One World - fairly forgettable. Brothers In Arms - SO excellent.

Banger after banger. Besser gaht es album mMn nur no konzeptuell als Ganzes, nöd aber nöd vo de summe a gueter musig

A few duds but overall great

An all-time favorite of mine. A few songs that seem out of place on the album, but the others more than make up for it.

Super good one.

This is for sure an all timer. So underrated as a band.

Love it!

Really enjoyed the chill vibes of this one, great instrumentals. I think it will be a great album to work to and I enjoyed lots of tracks. It doesn’t seem very exciting or groundbreaking but is very pleasant and I’ll definitely relisten

5 estrellas.

Played through the whole thing multiple times, enjoyable

Classic of its time and still…

10/10 great album

A classic masterclass

5 sterne

Oh my. I have always enjoyed this album. Sure, some of it sounds like it's designed to be hits, but so well written and timely. And I love the story that Knopfler picked up the lyrics from a dude in an NYC appliance store.

Every single song is great.

Classic...Knopfler's guitar working its magic in so many different ways.

Songs i knew: all of em Songs i liked: all of em Koffi dropping bombs here. Remember going through my dad's CD collection when I was like 11 and picking this out based purely on the cool guitar on the front, listened to it and my tiny mind was blown. Every tune is a banger here, weakest is rife across the river and still a great track. Last track is my favourite here by a mile, something about them face melting little stardrops after each line get the feels going. High 5.

Mark Knopfler is a beast all over this project, one of the best rock albums ever made. Effortlessly cool and technically brilliant. 5⭐️

Classic 80's dad rock and I'm in the back of the car being driven to Saturday football and I'm admiring the electric windows and wishing that we had electric windows. For years I hated Dire Straits and all they stood for. I must be old now as I really enjoyed it and going to give it a 5!

Grow up with this in the '80s. Never realised all the songs were on 1 album

It has to be one of the strongest groups of songs to start an album that there is. The musician ship is top notch. Great songwriting. Well recorded. What more can you want?

01) So Far Away - 10,0 02) Money for Nothing - 10,0 03) Walk of Life - 10,0 04) Your Latest Trick - 10,0 05) Why Worry - 10,0 06) Ride Across the River - 9,0 07) The Man's Too Strong - 9,5 08) One World - 8,0 09) Brothers In Arms - 10,0 TOTAL: 9,61 (96/100) Current ranking: 14/394 Oh, I'm going to enjoy this one. My brother really loved Dire Straits when we were kids and thanks to him I learned to like them too. On this album, just reading the track listing, I know that 6 out of 9 songs will get the highest rating. The remaining three probably won't be too far behind, so with the first bars of Sting's falsetto "I want my MTV" I already know that this will be another five stars album for me. Interesting fact: It was the first album in history to sell over one million copies in CD format. Here's another one: it's one of the world's best-selling albums, having sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Nice.

Probably should be on a Mount Rushmore for classic Dad Rock albums. It’s in equal turns truly magnificent and monumentally dull. Money For Nothing has hooks for days (and outros for years) and is one of the tracks of the century. Gets gradually naffer as the disc wears on. Why Worry? is the silkiest and softest of snooze savannahs, stretching ridiculously for almost 9 minutes. Ride Across The River has a litany of cheesy dated keyboard sounds that make it sound like a blend of Indian Restaurant background music and an episode of CITV Jungle Run. There are a couple of relative wasteland songs near the end but Brothers In Arms brings it right up to classic status. Strong 4.5. Look at em yo-yos, that’s the way to do it… money for nothing and yer 5s for free.

MY FAV BAND

Great casual smooth rock. Safe for family car ride. 5 Stars for smoothness . Almost has a reggae drumbeat in Ride Across the River

So good! Especially the bluesy stuff.

I've always been a big fan of Dire Straits. But this was the first album which didn't convice me. Too much pop, too little of sophisticated music making like on "Love Over Gold", etc. Listened of course quite a few times in the 80s but stopped quite quickly and went back to the earlier albums. Sometime, maybe 20 years later, for some reason I put the album on again and this time it convinced me more. Probably my taste changed and my expectations changed. Anyway, now I really love the album and think, that - like all other original Dire Straits album out there are certainly 5 stars albums!

Dire Straits pop huippu tämä albumi huhhuh...

A good album, not their best but good

Fantastic album, dated but still great There are no bad tracks, it all works together beautifully

Al time favorit

Heerlijk!

Favorite Dire Straits

Money for nothing is chef's kiss

I can imagine younger people dismissing this album as just more dad rock, but the four hits off this album, "So Far Away", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life", "and "Brothers in Arms" were very influential and appeared everywhere in American and British culture. "Money for Nothing" was super influential to me personally. I heard Sting's falsetto "I Want My MTV" in MTV commercials on television long before I heard the entire song proper. It is not an exaggeration to say that this song almost singlehandedly popularized MTV, particularly among the working class in the rural and suburb areas who only recently were given access to this new fangled thing called cable that was necessary in order to receive MTV. (In my age group there were only three channels that anybody cared about. MTV, HBO and CINEMAX (SKIN-A-MAX to those in the know)). I am always surprised by how many people misunderstand why Mark Knoplfer used the gay slur. If you listen carefully to the lyrics, it was a pro gay rights stance that mocked those that used the common slur at the time in a clever wordplay. While "Brothers in Arms" was about the futility of war after the short Falklands war had concluded between Argentina and Great Britain, it resonated with many in the United States, whose relatives had served in Vietnam and then witnessed the harsh cancel culture treatment those vets received when they returned home to the United States. It was also used to epic effect in the Season 2 finale of The West Wing, in the episode "Two Cathedrals" which I also found very moving. An album that is another example why much of the most well crafted music was made in the 1980s.

Damn well done rock record, holy cow there are no misses on this album at all. No filler. Knopfler is a genius on the guitar, and the rest of the band is great (I love the drumming). What a great record

A musical journey, the best of that decade.

wow. I am familiar with many songs on this album. I'm pretty sure I have the CD somewhere! But what a great listen ... Why Worry! So freakin' good! I don't know what I was expecting, but I am so glad this was on the list!

Amazing

Definitely the best Dire Straits album there is. “Money For Nothing,” while containing some problematic lyrics out of context, is honestly such an amazing song and the best on the album. Top to bottom this album really can’t be beat. It starts strong with “So Far Away” and ends on an even stronger note with “Brothers In Arms.” Not a weak song to be found. Just absolutely fantastic.

Its so good! Side A delivers to the maximum Side B get much slower and melancholic but still not out of touch! Side A 5* Side B 4* 4.5/5.0

10/10 absolute banger

strongly prefer making movies and love over gold, but hey, they're not on this list

That title track…. Wow…

That title track alone makes this album for me, although almost every single one on here has a lot to offer. Iconic for a very good reason.

Great album

Brothers in Arms earned a unique place in music history as the first album to sell a million copies on CD, marking the dawn of the digital music era. Fortunately, this milestone went to an album of real substance. Packed with tracks that feel deeply ingrained in my subconscious, Brothers in Arms reflects Dire Straits' commitment to songcraft, with every note polished and purposeful. Mark Knopfler, the band’s unassuming leader, brought an extraordinary touch to every track. Known for his unique fingerpicking style, Knopfler's playing is both technical and expressive, allowing each track to breathe and resonate. From the punchy riff of the satirical “Money for Nothing” to the haunting, almost cinematic elegance of the title track, the jazzy interplay of “Your Latest Trick,” and the reflective melancholy of “So Far Away,” his guitar work inevitably elevates each song. The meticulous production, achieved through countless hours of work in the studio, gives the album its enduring sound quality and feel. This dedication to the craft likely ensured the album’s longevity, challenging any notion I had of '80s music as disposable or gimmicky. Brothers in Arms remains a high-water mark in rock history—timeless, powerful, and a true testament to Knopfler's songwriting. Did/Do I own this release? My mother owned it on CD. Does this release belong on the list? Yes. Would this release make my personal list? Yes. Will I be listening to it again? Yes.

Frábær plata. Mjög merkilegt hvað hún varð risavaxin því hún hljómar mjög miðaldra, en reyndar miðaldra á besta mögulega hátt. Gaman að heyra hvað Knopfler sækir í svipaðan hljóðheim og Bryan Ferry á sama tíma. Dalar örlítið í miðjunni, en lokalagið skýtur henni aftur upp í fimmu.

Although the album fizzles out a bit by the B side (not lyrically but musically), it includes enough great tracks to be a solid output. Side A is filled with classics: “So far away…”, “Money for nothing”, “Walk of life” and “Your latest trick”. I find “Why worry” criminally underrated. Yes, lyrics are somewhat simple and harmony is there somewhat predictable. However with a new arrangement you can make it look as exciting as it should. Overall, 9/10.

Great album. The very first CD that I owned.

this album literally has money for nothing on it, so that plus my deep lifelong love for dire straits puts this at an immediate 5 idc

The guitar melodies feel smooth and effortless. Each track rolls into the next like waves on a calm sea. It has that laid-back vibe, a lot like Clapton in his quieter moments. There’s a sense of simplicity, but it’s deep. The whole album just feels easy to sink into.

This is pretty chill.

Had an album review made but it got deleted :sad face:

Enjoyed - brought back memories.

What a proper album. Normally I don't like singing that is borderline talking, but Knopfler gets away with it. The instrumentals throughout were captivating and I especially liked the lead guitar parts. A good mix of soft rock and a bit harder rock. Some absolute tunes on here and will definitely listen again.

A Milestone - brillant music

This is one of the albums that heavily influenced my taste in music. I don't remember when I first listened to it but I know all the tracks by heart and even start humming the next one before it starts. It's Dire Straits at its best for me. Mark Knopfler and co did a stellar job on this one. Listening to the full record today I rediscovered some of the more intricate sounds that you notice when you listen attentively but you can as well just listen to it in the car on a road trip. Love this one. 5*

It’s a strange situation when a bands best album is also their last good album. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, but his song writing chops really shine through on this record. It’s a fun rock and roll album with almost a pop flair to it, incredibly easy to listen to. At the same time, the lyrics cover some heavy topics, specifically the Falklands war, which was going on at the time Mr. Knopfler wrote the title track. “Money For Nothing” is a classic radio rock staple, for good reason. Incredibly catchy guitar hooks, memorable melodies, and who doesn’t love a guest appearance from Sting? My favourite song on the album has to be “Walk of Life”. This track has the ability to make me feel happy almost entirely regardless of my current emotions. It’s equal parts cheerful, nostalgic, and just a generally beautiful song about a boy busking in the subway. This is an album that I will continue listening to in its entirety, and I’m thankful it exists. 10/10

Money for nothing, 5/5 for free

My favorite Dire Straits album. 4 great songs in a row to open and strong follow ups.

Brothers In Arms is well deserving of the coveted 5 stars, a rarity for me to grant across this project. It's a gripping and engaging record full of incredible musicianship and meaningful messages. The hits like Money For Nothing and Walk Of Life and the title track all pack an impressively nostalgic punch, and on this listen my curiosity was particularly piqued by album tracks Why Worry and The Man’s Too Strong. It's rare to find a collection as strong as this.

Excellent

Absolute banger album. First 4 songs are great. We’ve got to move these refrigerators. Kinda gets boring near the end

Dire Straits will always have a special place in my heart. They remind me of my father - it’s his favourite band - and the thought of my favourite person in the world as my music mentor is comforting, and warms my heart.

Boh sto album è follia pura. Dal riff di Money for nothing alla dolcezza di Why Worry alla poesia di Walk of Life. 5/5 facile. Grande Mark.

Ok, io amo questo album, ciao. Ero indecisa tra un 4/5 e un 5/5, ma la vita è troppo breve per essere tirchi!

Classic

Heavenly, heavenly sounds. My first Dire Straits project, and omg it was amazing

Walk of Life and especially Money for Nothing are all-timers. Your Latest Trick is a pretty cool song carried by the Sax. Why Worry is a solid ballad. Ride Across the River is cool and smooth as hell. The Man's Too Strong has a southwest US vibe, like something from the frontier. Overall I love the variety and the guitar work is consistently excellent. I also appreciate the understated singing and think it's very effective when combined with the guitar. The only weaker song is the opener but it's not weak enough to bring this down to 4 stars.

This brought me back. No skips. I was ten when this came out. The beginning and end were like a crescendo.

I don't think there's an album in the world that throws banger after banger like this one in the first half and then drops of so bad like this one. However, this still deserves a perfect score.

So good

Great album.

Day259 - the first three are iconic but the song brothers in arms is as poetic as any bob dylan song and probably my favorite dire straits song ever

Wow. 5 stars. I heard the singles on the radio back in the '80s, and while I liked the songs, I also thought of them as "just more hits" and lumped them in with the likes of Janet Jackson and The Human League. Listening to this more closely 40 years later: Wow! This is an excellent album.

Great album

Quintessential 80s

Absolute classic. Brilliant 👍

sellout pasksiaiset... myivät itteään kaduilla... hollywoodin kaduilla.. ei mitään muuta kuin pop bändi tän jälkeeen... impossible to overlook the homophobic slurs... ei tajuu että brittilandiassa faggot = tarkottaa tupakkaa heh... noh tuo vähän takasin loppupuolella.. ambience sound... big spaces... perkele knopffleri latkuttaa lörppöä kulliani kunnes on vittu pakostakin kovana... ei vaan koskaan päästä irti... i wish all songs were like moneu for nothing...most awesomest riff ever... some guys in 1985: rangg dang gbabba ba dammm bababadaa baa bab... babaa ba daa ba... invents the best guitar of all times maybe.... why worry

An example of a record where you've heard the songs too often to give it a neutral rating. That being said, this is so eclectic and diverse that you almost wouldn't believe how many massive radio hits are on here. At the same time it's hard to categorise any of the songs. It's jazz, it's country, it's soulful, it rocks. It feels very American, while Knopfler is obviously British. All babling aside, this is a really solid album.

this feels like a greates hits album :D

Absolutely incredible

ha denkt jo voll i ienn so far away nöd. syke s introriff isch soo iconic. es isch seeehr 80er das ganze aber au mega warm und nostalgisch. oh yes money for nothing isch worschinlich s geilste song intro ever. sooo geil sting so guet s riff s fill vorher d synths. de song selber isch au legendär, install microwave ovens uf somne hit ich liebs. git automatisch en stern meh. d synth hits woni nöd cha zueordne so geil. Hall of Fame

Love each song

fire album, money for nothing is one of the best guitar riffs ever

Unreal. Loved this

Viejo conocido. No tiene desperdicio. En su oportunidad me pareció super original. Luego no seguí la carrera del grupo, así que no estoy en condiciones de afirmar si confirmaron. Pero el disco este es genial

Some favorites and other great songs

You have 3-4 of Dire Straits best on one album.

Undeniable classic. I adore the title track, but every song is a little masterpiece. Thanks to my parents, I knew 'Walk Of Life' best before I listened the first time years ago. One of my favorite albums of all time.

Happy Birthday, Mark Knopfler. This is a terrific album, far more complex than it sounds. Great music.

Good album, peaceful and calm, country-ish but more folkish and rock. Would recommend and listen again, 8.3/10.

Great album

9/10. Great mix of classics and good melody songs.

One of my favourites ever. It’s got some iconic ones: Brothers in arms, walk of life and money for nothing. But also some more blues/ swinging music in Your latest trick which I really like.

Love this album, I remember the CD being naturally really quiet and having yo dangerously pur my speakers on max just to hear it. I've never really focused on the guitar work before but Mark Knopfler's guitar playing is sublime

Amazing album. One of if not the best Dire Straits album

Absolutely excellent album. Found myself lost in songs without even realising. Really hard to pick a favourite track as there were four contenders that I liked a lot for different reasons. Fave Track: Got it down to Brothers In Arms or Money For Nothing but couldn’t choose between them. Rating: 5

Unless you accept it's tongue in cheek parody, Money for Nothing can be described as an apolitical, MTV-fueled, sell out but the rest of the album is so, so, good. Mark Knopfler's vocals and guitar stylings are exquisite and I dare anyone to listen to the title track without getting a tear in their eye.

Experiencing Mark Knopfler playing ‘Brothers In Arms' live stands out as one of my favourite concert experiences. And the keys on this record!

Brothers In Arms was obviously an attempt at writing bigger and more radio friendly songs suited for stadiums - but if writing “So Far Away”, “Money For Nothing” and “Walk Of Life” is you selling out, I don’t care. Knopfler’s songwriting is on point all the way through and especially “Your Latest Trick” and the closing title track are chillingly beautiful.

One of the very best albums ever

Very nice

Great album... but about third best dire straits album

Love Money For Nothing, good to hear the rest of the album. There were so many songs I liked on it!

Favourite tracks: brother in arms; walk of life; money for nothing; so far away; why worry; your latest trick

Great Album

Loved it, could listen to it all day

Classic album of the 80s and still sounds so clean. First half is perfect and second half is still enjoyable. Rating: 4.6

Beautiful album with many soul-touching songs

favorites - Why Worry, Your Latest Trick, The Man’s Too Strong WOW! That is really all I have to say about this album. Listening to this for the first time felt like a spiritual journey… just, and I must say again, WOW!

Incredible – absolutely love this album

Solid fucking album

This starts off with some serious hits! A bangin’ beginning. It’s practically a 5 with just those three songs. It gets deeper and more reflective after the first few tracks, but I really enjoyed the lesser known songs too. Each one takes you on a magical little musical journey. Love!

Classic album. 5/5

The first three tracks were a steamroller! It mellowed out after that but never really let up. I haven’t given Dire Straits much attention before, but I’m realizing that I really should

Cool to listen to

Great guitarplay, lovely album. Not more to be said.

5 just for the sound and the guitar playing. Songwriting tempted me to downgrade.

Great album. Every song.

One of the first CDs I ever purchased in 1985, along with Dark Side of the Moon and either Joe Jackson’s Night and Day or The Police’s Synchronicity #hazyguessesonthoselasttwo. A very fine album from start to finish, side 1 stronger than side 2 with three legit hits to start the album, but wonderful throughout. Great production and guitar playing. Thought it would be in surround sound on Apple Music, but alas it is not. But I still own the 5.1 surround SACD, so listening to that again was great.

Side A is met 2 grote hits dik in orde.

Classic and amazing

Classic!

Sounds like Bruce Springsteen to my uneducated ear. That's a good thing.

Einige alte Ohrwürmer (Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms). Aber immer noch gut.

A really cool, sometimes mysterious, joyous, vibrant, and reserved album. This was what I had wanted out of hearing their first album back near the beginning of when I had started this. Sometimes the guitar just sounds like crying, it’s so beautiful. I had heard Money For Nothing before and I had always made fun of it. Like, “Why are they bragging about microwaves?” But giving the song some context and some breathing room to show a wider picture with the rest of the album makes it such a fun time. This album made me a fan of these guys. Standouts: Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life, Your Latest Trick, Why Worry?, The Man’s Too Strong, and Brothers In Arms.

Had. No. Idea. What a masterpiece with glimpses of so many styles and genres of music throughout. Incredible rapping prowess AND multifaceted singing voices with range and soul. So glad to learn of The Score. Brothers in Arms: Listened to songs I hadn’t heard before because some were overplayed in the 80s. Of these, enjoyed Why Worry and The Man’s Too Strong. Title track is also solid and wasn’t overplayed for me in the day. Songs are great instrumentally and Mark drops an awesome lyric here and there, to be sure. Still can’t beat Romeo and Juliette in my book, though.

I was alright with it when I saw these guys pop up again. It still baffles me how it was decided which songs make the radio...

Just an amazing album, perfection

very nice

Love it!

Great album

This was the first CD I ever bought. Really made digital media shine.

Een van de beste albums

Dit album kan ik letterlijk elke dag luisteren, wat een bangers

Love dire straits and this album is amazing

James invited me to this group last weekend, but I didn’t start until today. But what a start it was. This album is a true masterpiece and I don’t hesitate to give it a full five out of five. Knopfler is a genius - a hugely underrated musician. His skills and style on the guitar are unique and his vocals fit the sound perfectly. I’ll admit that tracks six, seven, and eight are not all that, but the first five - wow - what a start. And then to finish with the poignancy of ‘Brothers in Arms’. One of my favourite ever albums. It can only go downhill from here…

A truly great album. Great songs, great musicianship.

Great and intense

What a great album! Classic 80s

Have always like Dire Straits music. They had a different sound than other bands of the era with Knopfler's voice leading the way. The band offered a pleasant alternative to the screamers of punk and metal where you could just relax to comfortable beats and enjoyable lyrics. 5/5

A staple in everyone's music collection.

Sound of my youth and relaxing after Carneval. The latest trick

I WANT MY MTTVVVVVVV

Great album!!

Love this album.

I've listened to this album so many times. I'm not even a huge Dire Straits fan but this album is such a pleasure to listen to all round.

Second Straits album to pop up on this list. No complaints here. Still a great album.

10/10 one of my favorite albums no doubt

The best 👌

Awesome!

A classic. Beginning to end.

i love it!!!!

Man, this one got me. I thought it was gonna be another dated, 80s-produced blah. But the depth in sound and production by Knopfer knocked me off my feet. This is a headphone album for sure. Surface hits and aural songs to dive deeply into.

Great, great album. I love the guitar riffs from Mark knopfler (sp). Such good memories we had when we moved to So. California...I remember the songs they played in 1985.

What an absolute masterpiece 10/10

I love this band. I was in such a shit mood when I started the album, by the time Money for Nothing was playing I was on top of the world. It’s literally impossible to listen to that song and feel down.

I enjoyed it from start to finish. I was familiar with 'Money for Nothing' and 'Sultans of Swing'. I'd heard 'Walk of Life' before but didn't fully recall it. This is my favorite rock record we've heard so far. I enjoyed every song. The guitar often took center stage and it was shredding, although it was often an understated slower shred, rather than the ripper guitar solos I am more used to. It reminds me a lot of certain parts of Dark Side of the Moon. The songs changed mood a lot, going from groovy big tracks like Walk of Life to slower captivating jams like 'Why Worry'. The band has a ton of range and the production captured the diversity of their sound well throughout. 10/10, really dope stuff.

Bangers. Mark Knofler is the GOAT.

Love this album. Although not their best album, it was my entry point to dire straits. It was the second cd I ever purchased! I love mark Knopfler’s unique style of playing and I have tried to master the ‘brothers in arms’ solo many times! A couple of average filler songs, must mostly awesome! 5 stars from me and most of those are for brothers in arms (the track)

This reminds me of hanging out with my dad on long drives - the ultimate nostalgia album. Nearly every track is excellent and I love Mark Knopfler's voice. I wonder how I'd rate it if I didn't have such strong positive memories - it makes me wonder what music tastes I've passed on to my children if any? This album probably has the most misheard lyrics of any music I've listen to - maybe come from hearing it as a kid? 'Now here I am again in this amino town' "you might get a piston on your lil finger' "we've got some movies, refrigerators, we got some movies, colour tveeees' 'he do the song about the single of the moon, he do a song about the night, he to the walk, do the walk on by, yeah he do the walk on by' Fave Track: Brothers in arms (probably the only one I didn't really listen to as a child, but came to love on my own as an adult! Great song)

Why worry y otros grandes éxitos.

Uppvuxen med och lyssnat på denna hundratals gånger. Älskar den rakt igenom.

A diverse and tasteful pop rock album from Dire Straights that builds on their previous work, but still feels solidly true to the band. Their tone evolved pretty drastically from the blues-rock of their debut to the synthy, echoing 80's production displayed here, but a myriad of instruments like jazz trumpet, synth pan flute, Latin percussion, and resonator guitar provide a really cool timelessness to the record. Pretty much every song is unique, and there are a couple really beautiful slow moments to contrast from the harder rock moments. As always, Knopfler is in peak form with his lyrics and effortless guitar work, trading phrases with himself and ripping iconic solos. Stand out tracks include "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Your Latest Trick", "Why Worry?", "Ride Across The River", "The Man's Too Strong", and "Brothers In Arms".

Definitely a very solid classic album. Some moments were a bit too slow for me, but there are so many bangers on here. I should definitely get this on second hand vinyl. 9/10.

ouve-se aqui boa música

Fantastic. Money for nothing is a absolute classic and walk of life following it up makes this album a classic

Great album, unique sound and can understand lyrics

One of those albums that everyone bought for their parents. Only now I'm a parent and I'm old and this is good and the songs are good and the production is that lovely 80s open sheen of sound. This is what a great album sounds like.

Gotta hand it to Dire Straits for truly creating their own sound here. This sounds like new wave/yact/70’s classic rock all melted into one.

One of my favorites from the 80’s. Loved this!!’

A perfect blend of dylan, soundtrack music and sophisti pop.

Starts strong. Ends strong. Forgettable in the middle, but four hits out of ten songs is pretty elite.

Oooh I really like this one! Vibey reverb guitars, nice jazz trumpet and FAT IKEA MAN SONG!!!

One of the best albums I've ever heard.

Back in the '80s a lot of things were happening in music. MTV played music videos, CDs were coming on strong. Hip-hop was in its infancy and it seemed like everybody was putting out an album. A lot of it was crap, but producing an album was cheap. The break even point was low enough that a label could gamble on what would have previously been passed over. "Money for nothing" captured the time perfectly. Unfortunately, Dire Straits acted the part of Rock's older (and in hindsight, wiser) brother. Too cool to hang with the youngsters and seemingly out of touch. Some music is good without context. Some music provides context for its time. This album is a bit of both.

I've been looking for this vinyl.

Discazo. Clásico atemporal.

Phone's ringing

A favorite.

I love the first 5 songs on this album…and while I enjoy the rest, this is one of my favorite sides of an album. It’s hard to have a consistently great album for 8 to 12 songs…there are only a few of them. But I could sit down and listen to this album any day of the week.

Every cut is interesting listening. I love Knopfler's understated guitar.

Absolutely phenomenal album. Knopfler can really make a guitar wail in such a moving and distinct way.

I mean it's dire straits AND it's has money for nothing. 5 stars

A great album... not their best, but the standard is high! Brothers in Arms (song) is my all time top 10.

Excellent but kind of dated now. Also not the best DS album.

Back in the day I loved this album! Great songs! MTV (with it's problematic lyrics that were so true to the way people talked at the time), Walk of life, So far away, Why Worry. It feels so good to listen to this one again! I forgot how gorgeously moody it is, how complex, how satisfying, not to mention Mark Knofler's perfect laid back guitar playing. Thanks for this one!

My all-time favourite album. Just.Perfect.

It is one of my favorite albums. Masterpiece!

Good album

This is one of the soundtracks of my childhood although at the time, I didn't realize you weren't supposed to say f4gg0t, even if he was getting his money for nothing and his chicks for free and you were jealous. All I knew as a kid was that yes, I did want my MTV.

This was an absolute bop. Big big fan, even though they did say some wordy dirds.

4 hits and lots of other good tunes too. Always enjoyed their music.

This was the first CD I ever bought. It had the new markings of DDD on the liner notes indicating it was produced completely Digital, no analog processes. I love this album. Much like the previous days offering (The Police - Synchronicity), each song tells a story and draws you in as it unfolds. Great mixing as well. You can almost pick out every different instrument that is playing. 5 stars.

If new music was half this good I'd actually pay for Spotify.

Of the Best

Great album, a classic favourite of my father's

Great Album!!

A classic album if ever there was one. Brothers in Arms still gets to me when I hear it.

Knew it would be a 5 and still is a 5

As a Desire Straits fan, I love this album.
