Brothers In Arms

The main singer seems to 'talk' more than sing in my opinion. I already knew 'walk of life' and 'money for nothing'. 'Why Worry' is soft and I like the guitar. The album has grown on me whilst listening to it - especially the guitar parts. Just not a fan of the lead singers voice. Probably 4/10. I like a couple of songs but probably won't listen to the album again.

Their 1st albums were nice. This one is terrible. Some over the top songs with Stadiumrock. Overdone. Beatles would have told them : act naturally. Some good songs but overall 2 stars for showing up in the studio.

My dad was a big Dire Straits fan. I think that killed a little bit of the coolness for me. I get that Knopfler is regarded as a master of the guitar, and I can appreciate that, but not to the level of following "Daily Updates on Mark Knopfler's Health Condition" on Facebook. I just have a hard time getting into this. The giant f-slur in "Money for Nothing" doesn't help either. (Full Disclosure: as much as I love Jewel, I avoid "Pieces of You" for the same reason.)

I've seen this LP around and I know it has sold a lot, but I've never listened to it. The first track I found lame and MOR radio-targeted. The following 2 tracks I've never liked much, but that could be because they were so over-played. I find it interesting that in 2011, Money For Nothing was banned in Canada because it uses the word "faggot", even though it's poking fun at people who refer to others (like Knopfler) as faggots. I guess the CBSC are the same guys who banned Barenaked Ladies because of their lascivious band name. The next 2 songs are made for Loblaws, condiments aisle. You get where I'm going with this... I'm adding a point because there appears to be some nice guitar work.

Boring, droany, far too long, awful vocals, horrendous lyrics. A few good songs, acoustics good, has a distinct sound but tainted by Knopfler’s tone deaf voice. 2/5.

Brothers in Yawns. I won't give this the long review and multiple listens it (probably) deserves. But this elevator-rock really does nothing for me. 'Brothers in Arms' and 'Money For Nothing' are great tracks in their own right. So there's 2 stars for this album. But 'Walk Of Life' is just annoying, songs like 'Why Worry' and 'Ride Across The River' are nothing more than snoozefests without any depth. 'The Man's Too Strong' and 'One World' are unnecessary tracks.

Listening through this whole thing was a slog... I used to love Dire Straits.

This depressingly, kinda blows, money for nothing is fine and the title track is a banger but everything else felt like filler

I was much more of a Golden Grahams kind of kid. But my little brother, Steve loved Chex, Wheat Chex, Rice Chex, Raisin and Wheat Chex. Steve ate Chex cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My parents must've spent a fortune on Chex cereal in those days. One time I was invited to go roller skating at the local roller rink and but my parents didn't have enough money for me to go ... because mom spent it all on groceries ... including 12 boxes of Chex cereal!! Then I heard this Money for Nothing song and decided I'd play my guitar on MTV, because if I did that, I'd get money for nothing and get my Chex for free. The rest of the album sucked.

The first three songs are justified classics, but it sure does fall off after that, getting trapped in some kind of lounge jazz (or yacht jazz?) slumber until "The Man's Too Strong" attempts to save things. Side notes: -Dire Straits is a terrific band name, though not sure the band is quite worthy of it -Didn't recall that the original "Money for Nothing" included... those... lyrics. -Lead Mark Knopfler apparently did the score for "The Princess Bride" -Those middle tracks were really awful. That's not a side note, that's the main point here, and they are more responsible for this album's score than the good stuff.

Their Spoitfy profile says "self-consciously mature rock 'n' rollers," which may be the most singularly uninviting musical proposition I've ever read. Luckily, that's not all they are. Hooks, tunes, SFX--all catchy crassness they're not above. But there's no ignoring their midtempo sobriety, which is almost truculent in its insistence on poise. There's also no ignoring that this gets a hell of a lot less catchy on the second half, which is the bigger problem.

Listenable but dull. Never really grabbed me. And I've always disliked the song, "Money for Nothing", so there's that. Sorry, Mark. Didn't add.

Not really vibing with it. Forgot to listen to it until today on the way to work. Money for Nothing has a great riff but I forgot about the F bomb in it. Some classic songs but two that I've definitely heard way too often

Money for Nothin’ riff still slaps for being a kinda dumb song. Guitars overall are pretty damn clean and tasty. The synths and extra instruments often feel out of place initially, but end up working out really well in the end. The closer was a snore. Overall not bad bad, but the singles are the highlights. This band does not sound like they’re from England, whatsoever, figured these dudes were from Florida. It’s aight.

never really liked Dire Straits

Wow. This did not age well. I remember when this first came out and everyone had fancy new cd players and this was the go to album. Money for Nothing still sounds great and Brothers in Arms closes out the album well, but the rest - just sounds flat and boring. They have far better albums.

love money for nothing, but was surprised how much I didn't like the rest of the album. the songs were fine. slower than i was expecting. Money For Nothing isn't necessarily a fast song, but there's something about it's.... swagger, that the rest of the album just didn't really have.

The Dire Straits should’ve said “you’re so far away from me” one more time — I don’t think we got it the first 50 times in the opening track. I like the message behind Money for Nothing, but don’t like the offensive slang — also these songs are really slow and repetitive. The sax in Your Latest Trick is really nice. These songs are SO long. I admit the instrumentals are good, but I don’t have the patience lol. Why Worry would be a good song if you cut out 4-5 minutes of it 😂 The Brothers in Arms title track has great lyrics, but again why is it so long?? Overall: the album was ok. The songs, particularly the instrumentals, were WAY too long for my taste. Some lyrics were beautiful, some not so much.

Some relaxing/smooth listening jam songs/riffs. Still don’t love their hits. Maybe money for nothing.

first song: not awful, but boring. ofc i recognize the second song. always fun to listen to slurs in hit songs. third song is another popular one. fourth song: ive heard this one too, and its the first one i like. saxophone is so good. fifth song is okay too, almost like a lullaby. sixth song is pretty nice, wasnt expecting this reggae feel lol. this album must be super popular because i feel like ive heard most of these songs on the radio. dont care about the seventh track. eight song is okay. lets see if the title track is good or nah. i wasnt feeling the buildup but it turned out okay kinda. well im done. it was okay i guess, didnt feel strongly about anything here, didnt love or hate anything.

Listened a few days late. Album is extremely cheesy rock, but the riff on Money for Nothing still slaps, first bench press vibes.

I think my problem with Dire Straits has always been the lack of dynamic or structural variation in their tracks. 'Money For Nothing' takes a good riff and then repeats it on end for 8 minutes with few changes, and that just doesn't make for an interesting or engaging song. Also the whole back half of this album sounds like the soundtrack to a chintzy 80s Tom Cruise romance flick verging on porno territory.

boomer rock. dire straits is not for me, and while i am proud of myself for sitting through this, i found it so very very boring i was nearly sent into a rage. love this synths, hate the everything else. 3/10. all points awarded for synth. points deducted for being the soundtrack of a generation that decimated the economy.

Another band that I know of through the radio only, their music is a Radio Two mainstay. ------ Soft rock is not a genre that inspires me. Impressions of this album can be summed up in a few bullet points: - Guitar noodling with an overwrought reputation. - Basic rhythm section. - Spoken vocals a la Dylan mumble over breathy backing vocals. - Basic synths. - Whitewashed American blues (What Englishman says Gee-tar for fucks sake), badly. Apparently this was made for the mainstream - it shows. Hopefully their earlier album(s) that may pop up in here are more honest. This album asks very little of the listener. It's like it begs not to be noticed; to be left in the corner. I'll gladly provide that service.

I really tried to be open minded but I could not enjoy it. Some of it just felt uninteresting, much of it actively annoyed me. The vocal delivery feels so much like a Dylan impression, but without all the poetry. The guitar work feels a bit smart and tidy to me. I guess my overfamiliarity with the singles doesn't help. I'm sure it's excellent, it's just not for me right now

I don't understand why these guys are on this list -- twice! "So Far Away" is okay, as is "Money for Nothing," though I hadn't caught the casual homophobia before (yay!), but mostly I was skipping tracks impatiently. So much of their sound feels like they're fighting against falling asleep and barely winning.

80s music just doesn’t do it for me. The sound is too echoey and synthetic, which I understand was part of the technological innovation of the time, but it’s not for me. I mostly just wanted to stop listening, but I gave the album a chance and finished it.

So Far Away is kinda like the song I imagine every single divorced dad listening to in his town car on the way to pick up his kids for his weekend from the woman he's still in love with. Money For Nothing is like the rant he goes on to his kids as he drives them to his house. And he wonders why they don't even want to spend the weekends there. Overall the rest of the album could be made fun of in the exact same way

Bloated album for fat dad rockers So, I had this on some kind of rip off cassette when I was 16. I must have listened to it two or three times I suppose, and it obviously has a couple of tunes which made their mark after the band exploited the commercial opportunities that Live Aid produced (not the only ones who did so fwiw). But even those couple of tracks aren't that good when you listen to them now. And the rest? Pretty much filler I'm afraid. Bloated. You can imagine the conversation in the pub: Yeah, that Mark Knopfler, he's a fabulous guitarist you know Oh yes, he's as good as Clapton you know Well, perhaps not the same style, but... Boring fucking shite that fat dads with their pints and their mildly racist views no doubt love Honestly, it's not even close to being Dire Straits best album

I've somehow managed to never hear any of these songs before, and man, I miss the me that I used to be. This album is boring as hell. Each song is at least 3 minutes too long. There's unnecessary homophobic language in Money for Nothing (and no, I don't care if they're writing from the POV of a character; in this time and place it fed into society-wide homophobic tropes, particularly considering the AIDS epidemic, so it was unnecessary). That's not to say it's all bad: I do like the saxophone in Your Latest Trick. But the rest is pretty dreadful - very trite, cloying, wannabe-meaningful trash. If you like the easy listening genre; overly long, meandering songs; or defending regressive attitudes, then this might be your cup of tea. If not, then you actually have good taste.

Music for people who don’t like music. Very tedious.

My friend used run a hi-fi shop in the 80’s and used to dread Saturdays. All the dull hi-fi buffs would come in to hear the new Kef or Mission speakers and bring this on CD, I laughed. Today I had to listen to it, fantastic musicianship totally wasted on the dullest pile of shite created! 54 minutes of meaningless twaddle, 5 plus minute tracks that went absolutely fcuking nowhere. I will happily die before I put myself through this guff again. 0 stars is too high.

this one felt just so incredibly blah to me. definitely not something i would reach for. even the singles (So Far Away) are boring and - dare i say - cheesy in a way that's not nostalgic to me. The only track I kinda like is The Man's Too Strong, fun lil country lane with bold guitar and the vocals sound more Bob Dylan-y on this one.

I remember reading a (possibly apocryphal) story that this sold more copies on CD than there were actual CD players when it initially came out. That was meant to illustrate how much of a phenomenon the album was, but I choose to believe it’s more indicative of the impacts of lead poisoning on boomers and gen x.

I was going to give this collection of tepid, boring, over-long soft rock snoozers 2 stars for, at the very least, not being unlistenable. But hearing the uncensored, slur-filled version of Money For Nothing, a song I already disliked, has earned this a spiteful 1 star.

I can see the band's smug faces as they play this to their adoring hoards of muso male fans. The lyrics suck. Just because you can play guitar doesn't mean you should. Turgid.

My first thought about ¨Brothers in Arms¨ is that I’m going to hate it. It sounds so 80s, and all I know of Dire Straights is ¨Sultans of Swing,¨ which is lame at the best of times. ¨So Far Away¨ sounds like a bad mix of Tom Petty and late-career Bob Dylan, with all the horrible production the 80s has to offer. After almost five minutes of the opener, the end seems ¨so far away from me.¨ See what I did there? The music isn’t unpleasant, as such, just unbelievably dull and disgustingly 80s. ¨Money for Nothing¨ is even worse, adding synths and talking about refrigerators in what I imagine was written as a screed against consumerism but sounds like something playing at a Target. Upon looking up Dire Straits I discovered they’re from England, which explains a lot. Sometimes things get lost in translation, and sounding superficially American is a strike against, not for. By the time I’ve arrived to ¨Your Latest Trick,¨ with it’s cloying jazz saxophone and it’s made-for-a-lounge or adult contemporary radio, I want to throw myself out of the 12th floor office I work at. There is no excuse to make music this bland, this bad, this soulless. The songs blend together into a cauldron of awfulness. As a coworker said, it’s the kind of music you’d hear playing at Chilli’s or Applebee’s. Best song: ¨So Far Away¨

I am unfortunately just not a fan of this. Could not wait for it to be over.

Exceptionally run of the mill with incredibly dull lyrics. I accidentally restarted the song Why Worry with like 15 seconds left and I almost had a nervous breakdown before realizing I could just skip it. No one knew how to make boring music like the 80s artists. The only reason I considered making this is a 2 is because I see the promise in "brothers in arms", but it's still hamstrung by the limitations of band's writing ability. I mean, the best verse of the song rhymes "worlds" with "world". 1/5

I'd forgotten about this album for decades. I'm sure I last heard this on a road trip growing up. It was forgettable then. It's still forgettable garbage now. I'm not even sure I need to use my "f-slur rule" to justify giving this a 1, it's just that bland.

I don't like this album. In some ways I hate this album despite the fact that everyone in the band is talented some insanely so and the music on this album is entirely listenable. So, what gives? I don't know TBH everything about 'Brothers in Arms' works well on paper but when I listen to it - it's just really boring to me sometimes obscenely so. So, what gives? I don't know really outside of 'Money for Nothing' the entire album just blends together and while it would be misleading to call it bad in any way I honestly enjoy 'Brothers in Arms' the best when it's not playing & I can just look at the photo of the pretty silver guitar that serves as the albums cover. P.S. We have all met people that seem to be indifferent to music. All music. People that when asked who their favorite bands are resort to saying things like, "I just listen to whatever is on the radio." I never understood those people because to me music is a huge chunk of my life hell to me music is life and frankly, I always looked down on them a little but what if to them all music sounds like 'Brother in Arms' does to me? How does it sound to me? Well-constructed background noise at best something to hear when conversations come to a standstill. That would be awful to say the least, but I wouldn't know what I was missing out on as music would have all the appeal of watching a game of chess on TV- so maybe I was wrong to look down on such people - I mean I would never date them but 'Brothers in Arms' made me understand them yo-yos after all these years and come to the conclusion that they ain't dumb - that's just the way they do it. You know?

I'll never forget the first time I was ever made aware of Dire Straits' existence. It was back in school when my friends and I decided to do one of those "What is your mental age" BuzzFeed quizes (because you know, gotta prove how mature we all truly are). The particular quiz that we chose had a question that simply said "What do you think of Dire Straits?" And at the time, I had never heard of them and just assumed they were some boring rock band from way back when that I will never care about. But I never forgot the name of the band, and I often contemplated checking them out just for a laugh. But here we are, having to listen to them for the sake of this challenge. And yeah they are boring as fuck.

So far away has SpongeBob-y music which is cool. Money for nothing - hate it. Hate the bit about MTV, hate how soupy and slow the intro is. And why is it 10 years long?? Walk of life - fun farm/game music. Wish the vocals were louder though. Why worry has like 2-3 minutes of NOTHING at the end? Huh? Is my phone broken or is this ridiculous? (Okay update my phone was being weird HA so can’t blame Dire Straits for that one) Overall, not really for me. A little boring, long songs, they sing SO quietly…

I got 2 dire straits back to back. The former being their debut album. In comparison, this album is a doozy. In isolation its still a lullaby. There were only two songs that I found interesting Money for Nothing and Your Latest Trick. The sound is good but its very unexciting.

I thought this would show up sooner or later. I remember listening to it ‘passively’ when it came out. Just couldn’t avoid it at the time. Having just sat through it today, I have no connection to any of the music or the lyrics or anything. The only half decent track comes right at the end, the title track is decent enough, very atomospheric, but it’s not enough to lift this piece of trash from a 1 star.

Once we get the big hits out of the way this quickly becomes very very boring and infested with 80's saxophone. Dire indeed.

Based on emotional response analysis, listeners experienced a 74% increase in boredom. If you want to hear Knopfler whine about the same 3 topics for an hour, this is your holy grail.

I never liked Dire Straits and by never liked I mean something that approaches hate. Almost everything about them was annoying. I didn't like the 80's sound - the guitar sound, the organ/synthesizer sound, Knopfler's voice, the band's looks and moves in their videos, Knopfler's stupid headband. I HATED Money For Nothing and hated the video even more. I didn't like any of their hits which only got worse the more they were played. Hard pass, change the station, I don't want to hear them.

A concept album about dental waiting rooms, lovingly crafted, allowing nothing human in or out, and beechwood aged for maximum inoffensively, which I find incredibly offensive. Makes Gaucho Steely Dan sound like the the Butthole Surfers. I'm told stereophiles love it. If you love this because it sounds awesome on your stereo, you're kinda fucked up, man. This shit is as sexy as taupe.

I remember liking this album back in the day. What was I thinking? So middling throughout.

I lived through the 'Brothers in Arms' era in Australia, where it was even more inexplicably popular than the rest of the world. It went 17 times platinum here, was number one on the ARIA charts for 34 weeks, and they played a run of 20 nights at the Sydney Entertainment Centre to finish off their year-long world tour. I estimate that about 5% of the total Australian population bought a copy of this album, and nearly as many (900,000) tickets were sold to see this tour. 'Brothers in Arms' was played so much that I know the album by heart, even though I have never owned a copy. And I never need to hear that album again in my life, thank you very much. But, for the purposes of this project, I did play it though today. I didn't like it then, and still I don't like it now, possibly even more so. Let's discuss why. While Mark Knopfler's mumbly vocals and tasteful guitar playing provide a modicum of character to this album, it is otherwise airbrushed, buffed and polished with everything that a high budget 1980s production entailed; click tracks, digital recording, synthesizers, and session musicians (including scrubbing the rhythm section tracks and replacing them with 'more professional' players). Steve Albini passed away yesterday, and I am reminded of a thing he said to the effect of 'anyone with enough time and money can make a record that sounds OK to a commercial standard. But it won't sound like a proper rock band," and that is so true here. This is a Frankenstein monster of parts bolted together to sound great on a CD player. And man, didn't everyone who bought a CD player in the mid 80s immediately buy a copy of Brother in Arms, and then evangelize to everyone within earshot about "how great it sounds". But it is an album with no fucking soul. And it has not aged well. In a scathing review for NME, Mat Snow criticised Knopfler's "mawkish self-pity, his lugubriously mannered appropriation of rockin' Americana, his thumpingly crass attempts at wit". He also accused the album of the "tritest would-be melodies in history, the last word in tranquilising chord changes, the most cloying lonesome playing and ultimate in transparently fake troubador sentiment ever to ooze out of a million-dollar recording studio". Well, I heartily concur, Mr Snow. The song that particularly gets my goat is the supposed 'satire' of rock musicians, Money for Nothing, that is the worst kind of hypocritical self-aggrandizing humble-brag commercial cash-in, sell-out, ubiquitous, stodgy faux-rock ever, which actually reveals Knopfler's contempt for his own audience. With fucking Sting on it. There's a reason that MTV loved it (beyond the pandering name drop); it is fake rebellion, designed to sell advertising. The more I listen to this album and read about it and stew on it, the more I realise how much I hate this album and all the MOR, commercialized, anodyne, 80s pseudo-rock it stands for. Now, I'm going to loudly play something engineered by Steve Albini to clear my ears out...

Is it better than Hotel California? Yes. Is it as good as Green Onions? No. Will I ever listen to it again? Not deliberately.

I just have never liked Dire Straits. Don’t like the vocals, don’t like the jangly ass guitar, don’t like the lyrics. I actually didn’t hate Money for Nothing as much as I did when they showed the video ad nauseum on MTV.

Impressive how awful you can make guitars sound

I feel like this is Dire Straits trying to be experimental, but they appear to have no idea what to do outside of soft guitar rock. The pan pipes, the funk bass, the organ, there isnt anything they can turn their particular flavour of bland to. The vocals are just about okay in soft rock but they sound completely out of place on most of this. Money for nothing is the most soft rock and so the best song, but even then the long intro is uncalled for. Really didn't like this, a proper stinker.

11/12/2023 Nunca creí que pudiera pasarla tan mal escuchando un álbum, principalmente cuando viene de una lista con el objetivo de compilar los 1001 albums que debes de escuchar antes de morir. Puedes morir sin escuchar esto, no hay pedo. Probablemente este álbum es el mejor ejemplo de los peores clichés por los que pasarían varias bandas en la década de los 80s cuando yo creo que este tipo de "rock" o rock an roll o lo que sea llegó a su fecha de caducidad. Esta bueno para tomar vino en un yate después de un largo dia de golf.... se que este señor es un guitarrista interesante y está banda tiene buena música y mejores albumes. El plan es elegir una canción de cada álbum que recomienden en una playlist y siendo honesto está es la primera prueba. Dios le da sus batallas más difíciles a sus mejores guerreros.

One star for the "Money for Nothing" intro. The rest is insipid, cringeworthy music for 80s dads to listen to in their Ford Cortinas. Not sure why a band from Newcastle are trying to sound like they're from Nevada too.

Money for Nothing is great, but it's eight minutes long for some reason, and nothing else is particularly memorable aside from "Walk of Life", which I never super liked.
