Jane Weaver
4/5
First time I was introduced to Jane Weaver, started so-so but “Did you see butterflies?” was meh but picked it up with “Modern Kosmology”
The Beach Boys
2/5
Never was a big fan of The Beach Boys, and it doesn’t help that this isn’t one of their better albums
The Style Council
2/5
Weird vibes of funk-jazz-soul music? Just not for me

The xx
4/5
Atmospheric indie pop with a nice vibe to it
Arrested Development
3/5
Would rate it 2.5 if I could. Not bad, just average
The Temptations
2/5
Groovy, “light” music, but would like it to be more upbeat, would rate 2.5 if I could
Dion
3/5
Very chill pop rock, might work well as background music
Beth Orton
2/5
Very “meh” album for me, nothing memorable about it
Dusty Springfield
2/5
Not my cup of tea

1/5
Never heard of this band/album before and nothing about it feels memorable or distinctive
Daft Punk
4/5
Not their best work, but still good by Daft Punk standards.
Venom
2/5
I am very picky when it comes to metal, and this doesn’t do it for me
The Rolling Stones
4/5
They have better stuff, which is why it only seems right to rate this a 4 and keep the 5 for their best work
The Sabres Of Paradise
2/5
I like electronic music but this wasn’t it
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Very atmospheric music, great voice, bumped it up to a 4 because of “You Want It Darker”
Erykah Badu
3/5
Some pretty average R&B imo, 2.5 would be more accurate
KISS
3/5
Pretty good album, but I feel like KISS gets overrated a lot
Kacey Musgraves
1/5
Feels generic, cheesy lyrics, nothing memorable about this album
Incubus
3/5
They have better stuff but this album isn’t too bad either
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2/5
Kind of repetitive, but also kind of different, unfortunately it stands out in a not so good way
Ice T
3/5
Decent music and lyrics even now, but back then it was something else, nostalgia bumps it up one point
Roxy Music
3/5
Pretty good, decent music that I didn’t mind listening too, will I come back to it? Hard to say
Fatboy Slim
5/5
So many classics on this album it’s ridiculous
Aerosmith
4/5
Good, enjoyable album with lots of replayability potential
Gary Numan
3/5
I only really knew “Cars” before this, the album is kind of more of the same, which is not necessarily a bad thing
Soul II Soul
3/5
Pretty decent nostalgic dance music
James Brown
2/5
Good singer, nice use of the instruments but the fact that it’s live detracts a bit from the score for me
Leonard Cohen
2/5
There’s no “You Want It Darker” to bump it up this time, still would rate 2.5 if I could
Tom Waits
1/5
I spent half the album waiting for it to actually start, it never does, so I just gave up
Lou Reed
2/5
This is a really hit or miss album, unfortunately it’s a miss for me
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
The Boatman's Call is a solid album that showcases Cave's songwriting and vocal skills. While it may not be as accessible or upbeat as some of his other work, it is a powerful and poignant exploration of love and loss that fans of his music will appreciate.
The Who
2/5
This is a 2 because it’s live, I am sorry but imho there shouldn’t be any live albums on here
Sonic Youth
2/5
This album just doesn’t seem to have the same energy or creativity as it leads you on to think at times with some of it’s songs, which are rather the exception to on otherwise just “loud” album
Alice Cooper
3/5
Alice Copper did not age very well truth being told, and yet I still found some enjoyment in this album.
Bon Jovi
3/5
Objectively speaking, this period of the 80s wasn’t the best time for hard rock, and bon jovi proves that. That being said, I do get a bit of enjoyment out of listening to him, so the 3/5 is just personal preference
Herbie Hancock
2/5
Gets repetitive too quickly
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
Feel about conflicted about the rating, another one of those where I wish for a 2.5, but since I did get some enjoyment out of it, I’ll bump it up to a 3
Pink Floyd
5/5
One of the best albums out there
Morrissey
3/5
The album features a mix of upbeat and introspective tracks, and while some may not hit as hard as others, there are still a couple of standout moments.
Various Artists
3/5
Great renditions of classic songs
Barry Adamson
2/5
Feels too much like background music
The Jam
3/5
Fun stuff, did not expect it to be this enjoyable
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
This is what “swamp” rock is all about
Iggy Pop
4/5
The Passenger is such a ridiculously good song
Weather Report
2/5
Not really a fan of these jazzy albums, and they seem quite popular
AC/DC
4/5
This still holds up all this time later. Not as good as Back in Black though
Orbital
2/5
Did not age well
808 State
2/5
Too much mediocre “electronica” here :(
Air
3/5
Whoever said Air is a better version of Daft Punk has been of their meds. They’re not terrible, but in no way should they be compared to Daft Punk just because they have “electronica” vibes
Pantera
2/5
Thrash metal is too metal for me
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
I feel like I should like this album more, but I guess it’s just not my thing
Animal Collective
2/5
There certainly is creativity here, it just fails to reach me
Radiohead
3/5
This always felt experimental by them
David Bowie
3/5
Not his best work, still some very good tracks on here, would give it a 3.5/5 if I could
Paul McCartney and Wings
2/5
Would this album have been as popular if it weren’t written by a member of The Beatles?
The Kinks
3/5
Hard to hate this classic, very representative of it’s time
4/5
I have a similar relationship with Muse that I have with Red Hot Chili Peppers, I like them, but I haven’t listened to them often, although that might be the reason for me liking them, the lack of oversaturation that a lot of people seem to be using as a reason for why these bands suck
Air
2/5
Very weird to see this on here as it’s not even a soundtrack, it’s a movie score with a lot of awkward, silent pauses
Elliott Smith
3/5
Pretty average album, bumped it up to 3 for nostalgic reasons truth be told
Cat Stevens
4/5
Did not expect to rate it this high coming into it, but it really is a beautiful album that I enjoyed listening to
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
1/5
This album tricks you into thinking it might be decent with the first song, don’t be fooled.
The Clash
3/5
I am not a fan of punk rock, but The Clash hits different
The Stranglers
2/5
Just your average new wave-punk-rock album really
The Pretty Things
2/5
Very meh and slow
Nightmares On Wax
3/5
Nice, chill background music, perfect for a smokers lounge
Merle Haggard
1/5
As many albums and artists I try, country still remains a “no” for me
Lorde
2/5
Having never listened to this album, this was exactly what I was expecting when I read “pop album with Kate Bush influence”
The Young Gods
1/5
Never thought I’d rate something other than country music a 1
Black Sabbath
5/5
I am not a big Black Sabbath fan but they have some really great albums that I keep going back to, this being one of them
The Who
5/5
Would objectively give it a 4, but the timeless classics “Baba O’Riley” and “Behind Blue Eyes” made me realize that I have to bump this up to a 5
The Mamas & The Papas
2/5
Sounds like your usual 60s folk/pop music, nothing memorable about it for me
Muddy Waters
3/5
Some good blues right here, removing 1 point because of the “lives” which shouldn’t be on an album imo
The Avalanches
4/5
This is what electronic music is all about. I got a lot of enjoyment out of this album, standout track - Frontier Psychiatrist
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
Great album from a legendary band, always a joy to listen to their music
Stevie Wonder
2/5
I know a lot of people enjoy his music, but it’s just not for me
Bobby Womack
3/5
I don’t normally enjoy this kind of music, but Bobby just hits different for some reason
Bob Dylan
2/5
Not going to lie, the album is really boring at times, then again, great album for listening in a bar somewhere while enjoying a glass of whiskey
Slayer
2/5
Slayer metal is too metal for me
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
This album is not what I expected, which was some chill cafe music, instead this feels like something you would listen when the world ends
TLC
2/5
Did not age well unfortunately, feels bland by today’s standards
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
1/5
Old and not gold. Sounds like your typical 50-60s american music that you will not care about unless you were born in the US
Parliament
2/5
Funky soul music, quite the combination now that I think about it. Did I like it? Not really
Beatles
4/5
Without a doubt a great and memorable album.
I am not much of a Beatles fan though, which is why I give it 4/5
Ray Charles
2/5
Not much of a jazz fan so I guess I can’t appreciate the genius of Ray Charles
Beastie Boys
4/5
I don’t know if they’re the first ones that blended rap with rock, I’m assuming they’re not, but they’re the ones that stand out for me
Motörhead
3/5
Honestly the Ace of Spades was the only Motorhead song I knew before this album, can’t exactly say I missed much. It’s not bad, just average for me, and with all average albums I have to decide between 2 or 3.
Joan Armatrading
3/5
“Groovy” I guess, really wish for a 2.5 score
Gene Clark
2/5
I feel like this album tries to do too much and therefore has no identity. You have country music at the beginning, then some rock, and then a mix between the two with some pop on top?
Bad Brains
2/5
Even for punk rock this feels like a mess
Mudhoney
3/5
Your typical loud, 80s grunge
Steely Dan
3/5
Some pretty decent chill rock, enjoyable to listen to on a road trip
Ryan Adams
1/5
Ugh
The Dictators
3/5
High energy and has a good vibe to it, also feels like it has more “order” to it than your typical punk rock album
Kate Bush
2/5
Always felt like Kate Bush was too overrated, still think that. That being said, this isn’t a bad album, just nog as great imo as others make it out to be
Gang Starr
3/5
Smooth rhymes, smooth rhythm, this has aged rather well
The Youngbloods
3/5
A bit too much of everything, unfortunately succeeded only at being rather average. I liked “Darkness Darkness”, but it being at the beginning makes you expect something that you don’t get from the rest of the album
Anthrax
2/5
Vibes of a poor mans’s Metallica
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2/5
So you’ve got “Heads will roll” here that I feel like everyone knows, and is pretty decent. As for the rest of the album, just your usual loud punk rock that I’m not really a fan of
Pink Floyd
4/5
Art rock, opera rock, not sure what correctly to call it, but it’s definitely a great album
TV On The Radio
4/5
Had 0 expectations, thought it’s yet another band I’ve never heard of with yet another average album. Completely wrong of course. Great album. 4/5
The The
3/5
Fun, synthy, 80’s new wave music
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
This is a band I enjoy and occasionally listen to, so it’s an easy 4/5 for me
Van Morrison
2/5
Is this another artist that people get nostalgic about hence he’s rated highly?
Tim Buckley
2/5
Meh
Roni Size
2/5
Was not expecting to come across DnB here. Anyway, not really a fan
Muddy Waters
1/5
I am not a fan of blues apparently, at least not of Muddy Waters
SAULT
1/5
Bland, repetitive, uninteresting, unappealing, I could go on
3/5
Not a big U2 fan, but I did enjoy listening to this album
Blondie
3/5
Blondie's "Parallel Lines" is a classic rock/pop album that shares similarities with other music of the era. While influential, some tracks lack energy, and the sound hasn't aged well.
Mike Oldfield
2/5
I don’t get why it’s labeled as “rock”, maybe seeing that made me have different expectations of it, instead just left me feeling slightly confused
Blur
3/5
Yup, this is the album that has that one Blur song that everyone knows. It’s also got a bunch of other good songs though. Would rate it 3.5 if I could, because it’s definitely better than other albums I rated a 3/5 (not reaching a 4 though)
Lucinda Williams
1/5
A bit confused as to why it’s on this list tbh
Tim Buckley
2/5
Expected it to be more rock than folk, it’s not
Joni Mitchell
2/5
I mean… it’s alright…
Finley Quaye
2/5
Was going to rate it a 1 initially, but it actually, surprisingly, gets a bit better as you keep listening to it
Harry Nilsson
2/5
I am actually surprised this album has such high ratings… everyone has a different ear for music I guess
The Monkees
2/5
There’s nothing special here, just another typical album that you’d hear in the 60s
Dinosaur Jr.
2/5
Yet another noisy album with nothing else to show for itself other than being loud
The National
3/5
It’s very “backgroundish”, wouldn’t mind listening to it again, but I doubt I’ll seek it out
Randy Newman
1/5
Nah
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
Upbeat, dancey, shades of Depeche Mode? Overall pretty enjoyable, just nothing to blow you away
Bill Callahan
2/5
Better than other country albums I’ve come across here so this one gets bumped up to a 2, not the usual 1
The Lemonheads
2/5
Feels like some generic punk rock band from the lower end of the spectrum
Tricky
3/5
Some pretty decent dark and dreamy trip hop
Shuggie Otis
2/5
Felt kind of slow and boring, just not for me I guess
Hole
3/5
Never heard of Hole before, and I don’t particularly like grunge but this album was actually pretty decent
Country Joe & The Fish
2/5
It’s kinda hard to judge, on the one hand, kinda meh, on the other, it’s a raw, blue-ish rock album from 67. I bet it sounded sick when it came out then
Jefferson Airplane
4/5
The late 60s, early 70s have such a unique sound to them you can pick them out very easily, and Jefferson Airplane is one of the reasons for that
Beach House
3/5
Well this is an odd one, very dreamy to say the least
Lauryn Hill
3/5
The hype when it came out was ridiculous, listening to it now… it’s good… just feels kinda repetitive a bit
Simon & Garfunkel
2/5
Another one of those “you had to be there” albums
Jimi Hendrix
2/5
A few tracks here and there are fine for me, but a whole album is too much
The Who
3/5
A better version of the beatles? And I don’t even rate the beatles that high
Prince
3/5
This album showcases his immense talent and innovation. While it contains some standout tracks and unforgettable moments, the overall experience falls short in certain areas.
Van Halen
4/5
This is everything that rock and roll was about in the 70s
Deep Purple
2/5
Feels underwhelming when compared to their other stuff
Beastie Boys
2/5
Too much shouting
Megadeth
3/5
Surprisingly fun, and you can tell that they’re all actually very skilled
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Not exactly “Let it Bleed” levels of greatness but still very good. Gets bumped up to a 4 thanks to a certain song
Stan Getz
2/5
Background music to enjoy a drink more than anything really
Prince
3/5
Has a very soul-ish feel to it, whether that makes it good or bad you decide
John Martyn
2/5
Too folk-ish for my liking
The Band
3/5
Has a few good jams worth listening too, all
in all not too bad
Talvin Singh
1/5
I really tried, but I just couldn’t get into it
Bill Evans Trio
2/5
Firstly, jazz is not exactly my cup of tea, and even then, this is a live session which I am also not a fan of
Kate Bush
1/5
Kate Bush has to be one of the most overrated artists ever, she has maybe 2 good songs?
Jamiroquai
3/5
An interesting mix of styles but falls flat in the middle, yet I bump it up to a 3 instead of going down to a 2
Led Zeppelin
5/5
It doesn’t get any better than this
David Bowie
4/5
This album grew on me the further it went
Jeru The Damaja
2/5
I’ll be honest, never heard of Jeru before this, maybe if I did I’d rate the album higher, but judging it by today’s standards it sounds very “regular”
MC Solaar
2/5
Honestly sounds very generic, just in french
Pink Floyd
3/5
For a debut album it’s not that bad, but of course you can’t help but compare it to their best album, and in that regard it comes up lacking
The Byrds
2/5
Meh
Aerosmith
4/5
I actually bumped it up to a 4, subjectively, because of the two iconic songs on this album that are actually very good
Wild Beasts
3/5
Very neutral, enjoyable background music. Works great while you’re doing something else
Cheap Trick
2/5
It might actually be better than my 2, but it’s a live session, and that always muddies my listening experience
Iron Maiden
4/5
This is probably their weakest (if not the weakest) album. That being said, a weak album for Iron Maiden is still out of reach for a lot of bands trying to copy them
Massive Attack
5/5
Can’t believe this album has more than 30 years now. Just as good as the day it came out.
The Roots
3/5
Feels generic, but has some standout tracks, making it an above average album for me
The Byrds
2/5
Yet another example of an album that has not aged well
Echo And The Bunnymen
2/5
Just a worse version of The Cure
The Prodigy
5/5
Electronic music pioneers delivering mind-blowing beats and fearless experimentation. An easy 5/5
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Food for thought, is this the inspiration behind pop punk?
Björk
2/5
The problem with Bjork’s music for me is that it gets old very fast, you listen to a few songs and then it feels like it’s the same with minor differences
Janelle Monáe
3/5
Not exactly something I would listen to normally, but it did catch me by surprise in a good way. Pretty upbeat and groovy, although a bit too much on the pop side. Missing a bit for a 4/5, but it’s a solid 3.5/5 (that I wish I could rate)
Afrika Bambaataa
2/5
It’s pretty bad unfortunately, this is a really hard one to recommend
Khaled
1/5
I’m all for getting out of your comfort zone and listening to something you normally wouldn’t but… not this
Os Mutantes
2/5
Too weird even for me
2/5
I get why it’s on the list and objectively it has to be, but subjectively… has there ever been a band as overhyped as the beatles?
The Beach Boys
2/5
Too many weird random noises
Booker T. & The MG's
3/5
One or two instrumental songs is ok for me, but a whole album is way too much. That being said, I can’t believe how many recognizable tracks are on here.
Primal Scream
2/5
Psychedelic background music… although it’s got some stand out moments that makes it passable
Led Zeppelin
3/5
If only Immigrant Song was last, would be a great way to end the album, rather than raise your expectations from the start and fall short the rest of the way
Supergrass
2/5
“We Are Young” is alright… but apart from that… meh
Elliott Smith
3/5
Very laid-back indie rock (?), although the sameness of the vocals and guitar can get a bit repetitive, I don’t particularly mind it though
Love
2/5
Nothing stands out here, nothing is memorable, listened to it once and I doubt I’ll come back to it again
Gotan Project
2/5
Ok-ish background music
T. Rex
2/5
Listening to this as a teenager back in the 70s you probably thought it was the shit, but by today’s standards, nothing particularly great about this album
Nitin Sawhney
2/5
You’ve got “Broken Skin” and “Nostalgia” which are pretty decent, and there’s also “Pilgrim” which is actually good.
Everything else though? Really, really bad, the difference is so big it’s impressive really
The Flaming Lips
3/5
Mostly good songs even if a bit on the melodic and slow side, but I guess that was the intention all along
Antony and the Johnsons
1/5
I honestly tried
Cocteau Twins
3/5
Everyone knows (you might not know the name, but you’ve heard it for sure) Cherry-coloured Funk for a reason, it’s that good. As for the rest of the album, after setting the bar that high right from the start… it’s alright I guess
Pink Floyd
3/5
It’s a good album that goes well even today, my only gripe with it is that it gets too slow at times
Depeche Mode
4/5
You either like it or you don’t. With Depeche Mode there’s no in-between
Paul Simon
3/5
Very average sounding late 70s / early 80s music, but gets bumped up to a 3 because it’s Paul Simon
Aphex Twin
2/5
If you didn’t like this one, don’t give up on Aphex Twin, he actually has better stuff.
I don’t like this album particularly much myself
Dire Straits
5/5
Really good start, then it might lose you a bit, but ends on a high note
Money For Nothing and Brothers In Arms are usually the songs I listen to once in a while
Fiona Apple
2/5
Your basic 90’s pop music
Amy Winehouse
2/5
I was never a fan of Amy simply because I’m not a fan of this type of music
The Beach Boys
3/5
This is a weird one from them, not necessarily bad, just… unexpected
Prince
3/5
Some ups and downs, but overall pretty good, which is expected from Prince
Songhoy Blues
2/5
Never expected an unknown language to influence how much I enjoy an album
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
People here complaining that it’s too repetitive… and they’re right
Jack White
2/5
Starts like rock (3/5), sure enough, but quickly transitions to folk rock which is not something I particularly enjoy
Ian Dury
1/5
Could not, for the life of me, figure out a reason as to why this album should be on the list
Dr. Dre
2/5
Even back then I wasn’t a fan of Dre, although I can see his work as being important and an influence on later artists
The Sugarcubes
2/5
“Mom, can you buy me a B52 record?”
“But we have B52 at home”
B52 at home:
David Bowie
2/5
Good start but falls off quickly for me. And I do like Bowie and he has been influential, 100%, but this album just isn’t it
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Controversial opinion warning - overrated album from an overrated artist
R.E.M.
3/5
The pioneers of indie rock. Am not necessarily a fan of theirs but their influence on the genre cannot be ignored
Brian Wilson
2/5
I know people love Brian Wilson but I just don’t get it, and I did try
AC/DC
5/5
Such a great album, good tracks from start to finish, it’s hard for me to find something to criticize, might even be my favorite album from AC/DC
Lambchop
2/5
Very monotonous and “slow”. I guess it can make for some decent background music
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
This was like taking a trip back to memory lane, the good kind of trip
Green Day
4/5
I am not a big fan of punk rock but Green Day are the exception + boulevard of broken dreams is so iconic that I feel like everyone knows it (for good reason)
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Some simple yet enjoyable country rock
Earth, Wind & Fire
3/5
Funky, jazzy, if only the whole album would have this vibe…
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Such a good album, especially considering it’s their debut album.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
1/5
I’m reading through the reviews, the praise but I just don’t get it, and I tried, didn’t give up on it at once even if I wanted to do. I just don’t get any of it
Eminem
3/5
This album is not actually that good, an average 2.5 feels fair to me but I’ll bump it up to a 3 because… well, nostalgia
Donovan
1/5
This is just not my kind of music. Feels very monotonous and boring, nothing to hold me one for the ride
Paul McCartney
2/5
This does not actually feel like a full fledged album, more like something you’d put together quickly so you could work on it later
Fela Kuti
2/5
Just not my type of music
Common
3/5
Didn’t have a lot of expectations coming in, but this album is actually pretty good, some good lyrics and doesn’t have that monotonous feel to it that a lot of similar albums suffer from
Rod Stewart
2/5
This feels like such a mediocre album
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
2/5
Music, like any other form of art, is subjective, so it’s perfectly fine for you to be in the same boat as me and not like this album
Beck
2/5
Not a bad album just not a lot going on to keep you there
Miriam Makeba
1/5
Yeah sure, it’s different, but I don’t like this kind of different and don’t plan on revisiting it
Beatles
2/5
Not saying they’re bad, but imo The Beatles has to be one of the most overrated bands out there and this album just showcases that, it has maybe 2 good songs and the rest is just filler content
Crosby, Stills & Nash
2/5
Is it a bad album? No, of course not. Does listening to 2 songs feel like you’ve heard everything the album has to offer? It kinda does.
Paul Simon
2/5
Doesn’t really feel any different than any other rock/folk singer-songwriter artists
Cyndi Lauper
3/5
You’ve certainly got some bangers here, like “Time After Time” and “She Bop” but my problem with her is that after 2-3 songs I start finding her voice irritating
Beatles
2/5
I guess at this point I should expect all of their albums to show up on this list
Sigur Rós
2/5
I don’t particularly know where to put this one, sometimes boring, other times quite interesting, I guess straight down the middle would be fair, but I can’t go 2.5 unfortunately
Robert Wyatt
1/5
To say this is weird is not saying a lot… quite the experience, I’ll put it that way
Saint Etienne
2/5
Decent album, heavy on the pop side. Do I think everyone needs to listen to this before they die? Not really
Nick Drake
1/5
Folk music just isn’t my jam apparently
Calexico
2/5
Apparently mariachi-rock is a thing, guess you do learn something new every day
Django Django
4/5
I was wondering if they’ll show up here, while not particularly influential or inventive, it’s just good energy and vibes all around. Stand out songs for me are Hail Bop and Wor
Van Halen
3/5
Solid album from a solid band, I still don’t agree that it’s considered “metal” though
The xx
3/5
Somehow slow and one dimensional, but at the same time it’s not actually bad and is somewhat enjoyable at times
Beyoncé
1/5
This album being on this list has to be some elaborate joke that I can’t get
Frank Black
1/5
A divisive album with inconsistent song quality and an experimental sound. It may appeal to die-hard fans but falls flat for me
Arctic Monkeys
3/5
A slightly above average album which made it to this list because… yeah, that part baffles me
Baaba Maal
1/5
Other than being “different” I cannot understand why this album is here
Big Black
2/5
For some reason this album isn’t available for me on spotify so I had to listen to it on youtube, was the extra hassle worth it? No, it was not
Gorillaz
5/5
This is an album from a band that I enjoy and come back to at times, so going into it I knew I was going to decide between a 4 or 5. While it certainly has quite a few bangers, and a couple of really good songs, it also has, unfortunately, some filler songs. It’s also a bit weird to see Gorillaz labeled as “rock”
LL Cool J
2/5
It was ok back then, but it did not age well. It also feels longer than it has to be
Pavement
2/5
Just an ok album all around, no reason for it to stick around in my head
Tears For Fears
3/5
So many classic songs on this one, it’s also one of those rare instances where it’s aged gracefully
Le Tigre
2/5
Fun punk rock that exceeded my low expectations. It’s a 2.5 for me as I’m not a punk rock fan
The Verve
2/5
I actually like the Verve, but this isn’t particularly good work, sure you have some decent songs, but the majority of them just kind of blend together and feel a bit dull
Jane's Addiction
2/5
It has one of those voices that you either like or it annoys you, unfortunately it’s the latter for me
Neil Young
2/5
Didn’t hate it, didn’t like it either though
Nas
2/5
I understand that it’s a significant piece in hip hop history but it just doesn’t resonate with me
Eminem
3/5
Stan still hitting as hard as the day it came out
The Everly Brothers
2/5
Exactly what you’d expect from 60s rock and roll
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
3/5
Bumped it up to a 3 thanks to Breakdown and American Girl. Otherwise it feels very meh
New Order
4/5
Did not expect to enjoy this one so much, worth a listen if you’re a fan of synth-pop
Kanye West
2/5
Kanye always felt overrated for me, sure he’s got a few good songs, even has a good album, but this isn’t it. That being said, it’s not horrible, plenty of worse stuff on this list
Q-Tip
3/5
Pleasantly surprised by it, a nice touch of electronic sprinkled into it
Johnny Cash
2/5
This rating is not indicative of how much I enjoy Johnny, I just don’t think live performances have a place on this list
Public Enemy
2/5
Must have been a game-changer back in the day, but now it just blends in and feels pretty meh.
Soundgarden
5/5
A real gem from the grunge era that hits you with deep emotion and raw energy.
The Smiths
2/5
I really wanted to like this more because I consider The Smiths to be pretty decent, but it just didn't click for me. The tunes felt a bit repetitive and lacked the unique spark I usually find in their music. It's not bad, just not as exciting as I hoped.
Def Leppard
3/5
If someone doesn’t understand what pop hair-metal is, this is the album to listen to, still fun though
The Monks
2/5
Not going to lie, this album left me confused
Sister Sledge
3/5
My biggest gripe with it is that it feels too repetitive. It gets bumped up to a 3 thanks to “Thinking Of You” and “We Are Family”
2/5
If you ever wondered what the punk/post-punk era sounds like in the 80s, this is the answer
Charles Mingus
1/5
I’m not a fan of jazz in general but for some reason this album felt even worse than usual
Coldcut
3/5
Funky, upbeat house music. Made me want to explore more of Coldcut
Big Star
2/5
Starts strong but quickly starts spiraling downwards, a shame really
The Doors
3/5
Good tunes on one side, pretty meh on the other, not an easy album to rate. That being said, I have to bump it up to a 3 because it is actually a pretty good album
Bob Dylan
2/5
While I can appreciate that he does good music, I never was much of a Bob Dylan fan, that being said, I still feel a bit guilty rating this album (which might actually be his last best album) this low
The Clash
3/5
A good example of actually enjoyable punk rock, coming from a person that does not enjoy this type of music typically
Tracy Chapman
2/5
Yes, this is the album that has that one song about a fast automobile
Johnny Cash
2/5
I do not like country music at all, it’s an easy 1/5 for me, but Johnny is an exception. What isn’t an exception are live sets, I honestly don’t think they have a place here.
Elvis Costello
2/5
My definition of a perfectly average singer making average music, I don’t get why he shows up so often on this list
Alice Cooper
3/5
Enjoyable rock album mixed in with some jazzy vibes
Hookworms
3/5
Shades of LCD Soundsystem, that being said, I’m hoping there will be some of their stuff on this list
Pixies
2/5
“Where is my mind?” is a banger as anyone who has seen Fight Club would say, and I guess it’s kinda true. Other than that, just disjointed noise really
Simon & Garfunkel
2/5
There is way too much Simon & Garfunkel on this list
Small Faces
2/5
Starts off ok, the gets progressively worse track by track
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
2/5
There’s too much Costello on this list
Boston
3/5
A very solid album all around
Spiritualized
2/5
It starts out pretty decent but quickly becomes so boring and annoying. It picks up again with Electricity but just falls again after
ZZ Top
3/5
Blues rock that bikers enjoy, then again, I also find it enjoyable, maybe I should buy a bike 🤔
Nina Simone
2/5
I don’t doubt that Nina is great and all, but she just doesn’t do it for me
Dr. John
1/5
Three songs in, still waiting for it to pick up, so far it just feels like an intro
JAY Z
2/5
Not a fan of his really, that being said, there are a couple of decent songs on this album
Taylor Swift
1/5
There is no world where you can convince me this album needs to be on this list
G. Love & Special Sauce
1/5
Very dull
Funkadelic
3/5
It is, indeed, funky
The Killers
4/5
Loud, fun, just overall a good fucking album
The Adverts
2/5
Your typical 70s english punk band
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Fun album, just feels drawn out
Underworld
2/5
Decent electronic music, but not something I’ll go back to
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
1/5
What the hell is that intro
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
Nah bro
Heaven 17
3/5
Did not expect this synthpop/new wave album to be as enjoyable as it is. Give it a chance if you’re a fan of the genre
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Deerhunter
2/5
So this is what hipsters like to listen to
Jacques Brel
2/5
I’ll say it again, I don’t think lives should be on here, they slightly ruin the experience for me
Lenny Kravitz
1/5
Lenny’s got one good song and it’s not on this album
Willie Nelson
2/5
He has a good voice but this just isn’t my type of music
Johnny Cash
3/5
I am not a fan of country music but Johnny is an exception, such a great voice
The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
2/5
Political rap that did not age well
Elton John
4/5
Might actually be his best album
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
2/5
Did not expect to see funky hip-hop on this list
Mudhoney
2/5
Not the good kind of grunge
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
I usually find Reggae boring and this isn’t really an exception, I bumped it up to a 3 thanks to So Much Things to Say and The Heathen, some standout songs
Marvin Gaye
3/5
Not a fan of Soul music, so me enjoying this album genuinely took me by surprise
Amy Winehouse
3/5
This album's pretty cool – it's got some good vocals and a couple of songs that stand out. It's not mind-blowing or anything, but definitely better than some stuff on this list
The Notorious B.I.G.
3/5
Biggie was, without a doubt, incredibly skillful as an artist, that being said, this is the type of album where you take out the standout songs and put them in your own playlist and ignore the rest
Metallica
4/5
While not in the conversation for “best metallica album”, this is still a very good album with quite a few iconic songs.
The Replacements
2/5
Loud just for the sake of being loud
Sepultura
2/5
Can’t handle the bloody roots :(
The War On Drugs
3/5
This album delivers engaging, lengthy tracks in a laid-back style, avoiding monotony. It's an immersive, pleasant listen, that I would come back to in the future.
Marianne Faithfull
1/5
The singing is pretty annoying and all the songs just blend into one boring sound. It's really hard to tell them apart or get into it.
Astor Piazzolla
1/5
Something you’d hear while being on hold
Steely Dan
2/5
Did I just listen to a hotel’s lobby music?
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
Although I am a fan of the dust brothers, I have to say this album did not age particularly good and it relies heavily on songs like Block Rockin’ Beats and Setting Sun to make it an above average listen
Simple Minds
2/5
Some decent songs here and there but nothing worth coming back to unfortunately
Nirvana
4/5
This album is really cool if you’re into their raw, grunge vibe. It's all stripped back, letting you really feel the music. I usually prefer studio stuff, so it loses a point for being live, but I completely understand why it has to be this way.
Talk Talk
2/5
Unsure why it’s on this list, just another mediocre album really
The Afghan Whigs
2/5
Decent music, but the lyrics are plain awful
Count Basie & His Orchestra
2/5
Was not sure what to expect going in, and still not sure what I got coming out of it
Miles Davis
2/5
I know everyone likes Miles Davis but man I just couldn’t go through with it, I’m giving it a 2 as opposed to 1 because there is something there, it just fails to reach me
Ice Cube
2/5
Doesn’t feel that interesting tbh, just some meh hip-hop that was considered revolutionary when it came out because of the message it was trying to get across
Frank Zappa
2/5
More psychedelic than rock
The Undertones
2/5
We really need to be able to go .5 on the ratings, because this is a perfect 2.5, just bang on average
Blue Cheer
2/5
Put this album on in the background, turn the volume down a bit, and chill with your favorite drink and some friends. It's perfect for hanging out and chatting.
Kid Rock
1/5
Wow this is kinda bad
De La Soul
2/5
This one completely misses me, it’s not bad, but why is it considered a top hip-hop album?
Garbage
3/5
Unfortunately, Garbage, for me, equals that one rain song. They do have solid stuff besides that, which is why I’m bumping it up to a 3, it’s just not really for me
Duran Duran
3/5
I’m happy Duran is on this list, some very enjoyable 80s new wave music.
David Bowie
3/5
I rate Bowie very highly but this album being labeled as a perfect 5/5 just doesn’t make sense, you’re diminishing his other, better albums this way in my opinion. That being said, Lazarus is a really, really good song.
Radiohead
3/5
I throw on Radiohead every once in a while because it’s a band I enjoy, but, to be completely honest, this is not an album that I usually put on
Yes
2/5
Very boring and slow
Genesis
2/5
There’s something here, don’t know exactly what, but definitely something, maybe I need to come back to it later?
Joan Baez
1/5
5 seconds was enough for me to make up my mind about it, but I decided to give it another 20 seconds, that being said, can I have my 20 seconds back now?
Simon & Garfunkel
2/5
I guess my problem with Simon & Garfunkel in general is that I find their music very passive and soft, just straight up boring I guess. All of this is very subjective of course.
The Young Rascals
2/5
Yet another forgettable album that I will not be coming back to
Beatles
2/5
Can’t help but think that if this album were from any other album then it wouldn’t be on this list
2/5
Never thought I’d find an album too “progressive”, but hey, if you are a fan of the genre, you’re going to love this album.
CHIC
3/5
Nothing speaks more 80s than this upbeat, funky album. It’s actually fair to say that this is typical 80s funky soul, luckily, I enjoy typical 80s funky music
The Beta Band
2/5
Forgettable, bland music, like a lot of the albums on this list now that I think about it
Pixies
3/5
Very indicative of who the Pixies are - fun, upbeat, indie rock
Eagles
3/5
It’s honestly just boring country rock, although, title song is so good it drags it up to a 3
Metallica
4/5
Coming into this I was sure it was getting a perfect score but listening to it again, I realize just how good the title song is, makes the whole album feel slightly better than it actually is. Still a banging album though.
Beck
3/5
Shades of early Gorillaz, not that it’s a bad thing
Marty Robbins
4/5
Great album to enjoy while roaming around the Mojave Wasteland
Steely Dan
2/5
Not great but not too horrible either, had a few tunes I enjoyed, the rest is pretty forgettable
Cocteau Twins
2/5
Too “shoegaze” for my liking
Arcade Fire
3/5
Very indicative of what kind of music was popular back then, which is not a bad thing.
Jeff Beck
2/5
Torn between a 2 and a 3 as there is something there, just can’t put my finger on it
A Tribe Called Quest
3/5
Really fun old-school album
Queen
3/5
Probably one of their more forgettable albums, but it’s Queen so you still get an above average listening experience
CHVRCHES
3/5
Flashbacks of fifa 14
Siouxsie And The Banshees
2/5
Couldn’t get into it
The Police
2/5
Decent album but The Police just feels so overrated that you go into it with higher expectations.
PJ Harvey
1/5
For someone who enjoys indie rock, this album completely misses me, I was hoping to at least get one good track but no such luck
Röyksopp
4/5
I’ve always had a soft spot for Röyksopp, probably because I listened to a lot of electronic music back in high-school. This album brings a wave of nostalgia, but even setting that aside, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable dance record that’s definitely worth your time.
The Saints
2/5
Punk indeed
Pixies
3/5
Not a big fan of Pixies but the influence they had on later bands (Radiohead, Nirvana) that I’m a fan of cannot be ignored
Eric Clapton
2/5
Starts pretty decent but quickly falls short of what you thought it would deliver
3/5
Some decent, early 90s poprock? britrock? Not exactly sure where it falls tbh
Serge Gainsbourg
2/5
Musically not that bad of an album, but it just doesn’t interest me
Alice In Chains
4/5
This album perfectly captures the tense and suffocating vibe that matches the band’s experiences. The music, with its odd time signatures, heavy reverb guitar, and layered vocals, creates a relentless and intense atmosphere. Stand out song is obviously Rooster but don’t sleep on Would and Angry Chair
Les Rythmes Digitales
2/5
Even for electronic music this feels too repetitive
Missy Elliott
2/5
First time I hear about Missy, can’t say I missed too much
The Divine Comedy
1/5
Incredibly generic, boring pop. Easily skippable
The Teardrop Explodes
2/5
80s brit pop that sounds the same as any other 80s brit pop
Sleater-Kinney
2/5
The vocals are too “shrieky” for my taste
Otis Redding
3/5
It’s a solid album, just feels too drawn out at times
Def Leppard
4/5
Music, like art in general, is of course subjective, and people will have different opinions when it comes to it. That being said, people trashing this album know fuck all about music
Franz Ferdinand
3/5
It did not start well and was considering dropping it, but it actually grows on you the more you listen to it. Stand out songs are obviously Take Me Out and This Fire
Throwing Muses
2/5
Might be good but man that voice is annoying
3/5
Very representative of indie rock in the 2000, some decent tracks here and there bump it up to a 3
Beatles
2/5
At this point I shouldn’t be surprised that there are so many of their albums on this list. The first track on this album really gives an indication of what’s waiting for you, that being said, can’t believe how some people try to argue that it’s some genius lyrics that others fail to understand, I guess I can’t just comprehend the complexity of “beep beep”
Frank Sinatra
2/5
Bland music
Ride
2/5
Typical 90s noise-rock music
Meat Loaf
3/5
Did I just listen to rock-piano?
Radiohead
3/5
I don’t particularly like their experimental album, still some a good album though
Gil Scott-Heron
2/5
Decent music and vocals just not my vibe
Slade
3/5
I really thought walking into this that it would be some AC/DC wannabe band but they’re actually pretty good even if somewhat similar. There’s also a pinch of glam-rock here that I did not expect to enjoy
Screaming Trees
3/5
Never heard of them so didn’t expect too much, maybe that’s why I thought it was actually a pretty good album?
The Strokes
4/5
I mean, it’s the Strokes, what else can I say? If you’re a fan of indie rock then it’s hard to make a case for why this album shouldn’t be at least a 4/5
Aimee Mann
2/5
Most generic 90s pop-rock ever
Dagmar Krause
1/5
Feel free to skip this, you’re not missing out on much
Bee Gees
2/5
Come back to the Bee Gees later, they’re still finding their groove in 71
Flamin' Groovies
2/5
Underwhelming
Gang Of Four
3/5
Never heard of them before this, not exactly sure how I feel about this album to be completely honest, but one thing’s for sure, it definitely packs a punch
Pearl Jam
5/5
From start to finish, it’s amazing, with a heavy, gritty sound that no one else can copy. The guitar riffs are killer, the drums are pounding, and Eddie’s vocals are incredible. Even after all these years, this album still rocks just as hard. Easy 5/5
Hole
2/5
**Review:**
This album starts strong but quickly becomes underwhelming and generic. Despite a few highlights, it lacks originality and feels forgettable. Not as good as some of their other stuff.
Spacemen 3
1/5
What a big pile of … nothing
Billy Joel
3/5
This album mixes punk energy with modern twists, but it didn’t quite click for me. Tracks like “Neon Nights” have a spark, yet the experimental pieces felt off. This type of music just isn’t up my alley
Santana
4/5
This album kicks ass on paper, but it just didn't click for me this time. Carlos shreds, the latin grooves are tight, but I wasn't feeling it. Maybe I needed a few drinks beforehand? It's a classic for a reason, I guess. I'll give it another shot when I'm in the right headspace.
The Byrds
2/5
Generic country/folk music from the 60s-70s that blends in with other albums of its era
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
2/5
I swear all country/folk music from this time period sounds the same
Buzzcocks
2/5
Is this the same song on repeat 10 times? Not 11 because the last song actually sounds different than the rest
Laibach
2/5
I wish I liked this more, I really do, but there’s just no variety here. As good as the first song is, you can’t just have more of the same for the rest of the album.
Boards of Canada
2/5
They’re not bad per se, just incredibly dull
Raekwon
2/5
This sounds like your generic hip hop album from the 90s, I was hoping for at least one stand-out song from this 18 track album but there were none
Faith No More
3/5
My only problem with this album is that it feels as though it’s all over the place, mostly because it’s trying too much. That being said, it does deserve a place on this list and it’s influence cannot on later, more “iconic” bands cannot be disputed
The Libertines
2/5
Feels like yet another indie album from the 2000s
Sonic Youth
2/5
Just loud noises for the sake of being loud
Suede
2/5
Generic britpop from the 90s
Frank Sinatra
4/5
The music might seem repetitive, almost blending together, but I actually found that to be part of its charm. Sinatra’s smooth vocals and the laid-back melodies create a surprisingly relaxing vibe, perfect for unwinding.
Love
2/5
This album is pretty obnoxious, and I don’t mean it in a good way, only reason it’s not a 1 is because there’s something there right at the beginning, something resembling actual decent music, but it just falls off so quickly you’re left disappointed
System Of A Down
3/5
I was never much of a metal fun, and by much I mean I never enjoy listening to this genre, but soad manage to somehow stand out and are one of the bands I’m willing to make an exception for
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
While not necessarily bad, it does feel very repetitive, like one long song repetitive. I didn’t hate it, found it enjoyable actually, I just doubt that it’s something I’ll be returning to on purpose
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
Some raw, post punk music here reminiscent of Joy Division, all in all not too shabby
Kings of Leon
2/5
I feel like this is a band I should like more but unfortunately it’s yet another band that has a few good songs and that’s about it
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2/5
Overrated album from an overrated artist
N.W.A.
3/5
“Oh noes, this album is filled of misogyny and violence, how can anyone like this”
If this is your criteria for rating music, I’m afraid of what kind of music we’d have if it were up to you.
That being said, lyrics are doing the heavy lifting here, everything else is kind of meh by todays standards, a 3.5/5 is probably more accurate
Aerosmith
4/5
Fuck all the haters
PJ Harvey
1/5
Damn this was rough. Tried to vibe with the raw energy, but it just hurt my ears. Harvey's voice? More screechy than edgy. The bare-bones sound felt half-baked. Hard pass for me
Grateful Dead
2/5
I actually like the Grateful Dead but this isn’t what I would recommend to someone listening for the first time
Kings of Leon
2/5
I rated their previous album (youth and young manhood) a 2 and called it mediocre and this is actually slightly better so it should be a 2.5, but we don’t have .5 here so I need to decide if it gets bumped up to a 3 🤔
Aretha Franklin
2/5
Feel free to tell me how I know nothing about music, but I thought this album was incredibly boring. The backing tracks feel uninspiring, and the songwriting is nothing special. Only good thing about this album are her very good vocals.
Neil Young
3/5
This is not my type of music, I find it too stale, that being said, Neil still finds a way to elevate this stale music, not a lot as to make me want to come back to it, but just enough to make it an above average listening experience
1/5
Hard pass
Drive Like Jehu
2/5
Fine, I’ll say it, this is too raw and “punk” for me
Stephen Stills
2/5
This album is basically two parts, and it starts out pretty good, with a solid 3, focusing more on psychedelic rock if you will, and in the second part it descends to mediocre country music which is a 1 for me. With all of that said, the final score makes perfect sense if you ask me.
D'Angelo
3/5
This is quintessential 90s R&B, sure to delight fans of the genre. The smooth vocals and soulful melodies are undeniably skillful. That being said, it's not something you’d usually find in my playlist.
Bob Dylan
3/5
This album caught me by surprise as I’m not much of a Bob Dylan fan, so I was expecting to listen to yet another overrated album, but no, this was actually an enjoyable 50 mins that is definitely worthy of this list
Patti Smith
2/5
I’m sorry but I just don’t get what all the hype is about
The Cure
4/5
The Cure really delivered with this album, one might even make the argument that it’s their best one. It’s a slow burn, but in a good way, it’s also got this vibe to it that is difficult to put into words, but it makes the album stand out. Wasn’t expecting to like it this much, solid 4/5
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
2/5
Yet another forgettable album
The Go-Betweens
2/5
Just a worse version of The Smiths
Funkadelic
3/5
Funky
The Kinks
3/5
Another britrock band with a good album but no standout tracks. You might even think you’re listening to the beatles if you’re not paying attention
Wilco
3/5
Maybe I should give Wilco more of a chance? I expected mediocrity but actually got a “good but not great” album
Green Day
3/5
I mean it’s Green Day, for good or bad, they’re so iconic that you immediately know what to expect, the rest is up to you to decide how much you enjoy them
The Thrills
2/5
I was promised thrills and there were none, not cool
Hawkwind
1/5
Hard pass
Orange Juice
2/5
Bland and repetitive, I see no reason to come back to them
Bauhaus
3/5
First time I hear about these guys, and this is supposedly goth music? I always thought goth music is supposed to be some depressing stuff but this is actually pretty fun
Miles Davis
1/5
Mind you even if the genre says it’s jazz, it’s actually different from your traditional jazz that you’d expect, it’s some kind of weird experimental jazz that I did not vibe with at all
Fleet Foxes
2/5
Ok-ish, dull music that sounds very similar to other bands
Malcolm McLaren
2/5
The concept of hip hop mixed with world is very interesting, too bad the execution is lacking
Bob Dylan
3/5
I just realized that I only listen to Bob Dylan when I’m interested in a certain song, it’s never “I just feel like listening to some Bob Dylan so I’ll put something of his on shuffle”
It’s basically a quick in-and-out
The Smiths
4/5
I’m not that big of a Smiths fan but you can’t in all honesty say that this is shit. This might be my favorite album from them and I’ll probably come back to it in the future, which is more than I can say about some other albums on this list
Michael Kiwanuka
4/5
So happy to see this album on the list and for Michael to get the props he deserves
George Michael
3/5
Starts strong but falls off quickly, it’s still good though
Dwight Yoakam
2/5
Not as bad as I expected it to be, then again, I was expecting it to be absolutely abysmal
Radiohead
5/5
Not my favorite Radiohead album but it’s still up there, I’d probably give it a 4.5 if I could, but deciding between a 4 and 5, it has to be a 5
Madonna
3/5
I am not a fan of Madonna but I certainly get why this albums is on the list, it’s iconic, good production, her voice “fits” the overall tone of the album. If I were to complain about something it’s probably the length, 1h6m feels too much
James Taylor
1/5
Easily forgettable
OutKast
4/5
This is the type of album I stick around on this website for
Miles Davis
3/5
This is objectively good music, it’s just not something I particularly care about
Pere Ubu
1/5
This is too noisy and weird even for me
Culture Club
2/5
You have maybe 2 good songs doing all the heavy lifting and hoping it’s enough to call this a good album, it’s not
Sam Cooke
1/5
Live albums never work for me and I have yet to find the exception to the rule
Arcade Fire
2/5
Experimental indie pop that left me unsure if I actually enjoyed it or not, 2.5/5
Cypress Hill
3/5
Not something that will blow you away, might even call it boring at times, but a solid album all around
Buena Vista Social Club
3/5
Did not expect to enjoy this one, pleasantly surprised
Everything But The Girl
1/5
No business being on this list
U2
3/5
A bit repetitive but pretty decent overall
Portishead
4/5
Did not expect to enjoy it this much
4/5
I see a lot of people hating on this, which is fine, not everyone can limp with the bizkit
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Easily forgettable
fIREHOSE
2/5
Never heard of them before this, and I probably won’t hear of them in the future again
Thin Lizzy
3/5
I don’t think live albums have a place on such a list
Badly Drawn Boy
2/5
I see nothing memorable or special about this album to warrant it’s place on this list
Buffalo Springfield
2/5
Interesting bits and pieces here and there but in general not a fan
