Classic bluesy rock. Money for Nothing and Walk of Life carry a lot of the album, but the rest of the songs don’t fall short
Classic album. Takes me back to a previous life.
I love this band and have some of their songs in playlist, but the band name wasn't familiar to me hah. So, initialy I thought it was another british crap band or something. But no, it's gold. It's like a head-scratcher massager that's teasing my ears and head inside and outside with music. Their debut album is also in the 1001 list, so I'll be waiting 'cause it's a great album too. 4/5 —————————————— Liked: — So Far Away — Money For Nothing — Your Latest Trick — Why Worry? — Brothers In Arms
Good album. The title track is excellent
Brings back a lot of memories
What a banger. This album I've never given the time of day to but I realized I've heard a lot of it before. 'So Far Away', 'Money for Nothing' and 'Walk of Life' is a stellar start to this album. The lyrics are a bit sad and meandering all wrapped in a easy listening blues rock and country package. What is not to enjoy.
Money for nothing è un pezzo senza senso e invece delle canzoni meno conosciute your latest trick mi è piaciuta molto
Fantastic
This is a four star album with a few five star songs on it. Title track in particular is really great. And Knopfler's guitar playing is impeccable. I think there are Dire Straits albums I like more, but this is still a high four.
Front half of the album is amazing 5/5. Second half of the album stayed solid, a bit worse and not as many hits, but still good overall. Either a 4 or 5 for me.
Great atmosphere, lovely guitar
I'm not really a Dire Straits fan, but this is actually quite good. Knopfler's playing is other worldly. Liked Songs Added: So Far Away Your Latest Trick The Man's Too Strong
All in all, pretty solid album. I'm not going to try and defend the slurs in Money For Nothin, but the song is pretty fun otherwise. I tend to have a soft spot for the softer, jazzier tracks on this album, and sax solos will get me every time.
One of my favourite albums from the mid 80s. Money for Nothing was a fantastic song, and the video was groundbreaking at the time. The track, Brothers in Arms, still gives me chills and brings me back to the cold war times of the mid-80s.
Remember when MTV used to play music videos? Those were great times... 4.5/5 stars. (really 6/7) This one is a bit tough to rate. The first 3 songs "So Far Away From Me", "Money for Nothing", and "Walk of Life" are 5/5 easy. "Money for Nothing" is one of the greatest guitar riffs of all time. Find the best guitarist you know, and watch how fast they would "nope" out of being challenged to play it. The rest of the album after it is great, but doesn't rise to the level of those first three songs. I'd tell anyone to listen to those first three (with caveat to younger people about how much culture has changed since "Money for Nothing" was recorded), but the rest of the album isn't going to excite everyone.
Really cool album, some true classics in here
Favorite tracks: Money for Nothing, Your Latest Trick, Walk of Life This album is tricky. The guitar playing is phenomenal, but the even the singer sounds bored. I was able to look past the vocals on some of the more pop-y songs, but once it got into the slow songs it was a bit of a drag. Lucky for Dire Straits, that guitar playing (and the sexy sax) had me rounding up instead of down.
Knopfler is one of the greatest guitar players in history for sure. I always /liked/ him and Dire Straights but it sort of felt a bit like classic rock radio filler sometimes - it's just played so much it's easy to miss the nuance etc. Justin Hawkins' youtube really challenged me to listen more deeply and I can't get enough of the subtlety of his guitar playing now. There are also some humongous songs on here too. Money for Nothing is an obvious classic, but Brothers In Arms is sneaky-fantastic.
Yeah this was solid. I only knew a few songs but will be back.
Really good dad rock
Really cool guitar on this
Phewwww the guitars
money for nothing goes so hard man. honestly i really enjoy this save the odd jungle themed one Would I listen again: yes Deserves to be on this list: yes 4.2
I really enjoyed the first half of this album. I thought this would be a complete snoozefest, since I wasn’t a huge fan of the other album I listened to by the Dire Straits, so I was pleasantly surprised. The second half was fine but just not as strong as the first half. I really feel like this is the kind of album I’d get bored to listening to, with the longer runtimes and song lengths, but it kept me going all the way through. So Far Away and a lot of the other songs are just too good that I want to keep hearing more.
Great album for the time some hits on it
Buen disco. 4/5
Rv/g
I remember the video for Money For Nothing every time I hear the song I just think of that video of the blocky people walking around. As someone who remembers when MTV did show music videos all the time that song makes sense, to someone now just hearing it I wonder if it does make that much sense. That song alone is making this go from a normal middling 3 start to a 4 star review.
Creí que conocía solo dos canciones de este disco y al final eran cuatro y me las he guardado: Money for nothing, Walk of life, Your latest trick y Brothers in arms. Mucho mejor de lo que esperaba.
Solid album with some great riffs.
Incredible start to this album but goes to slow in the middle. Saved by brother in arms at the end. This was on for a 5 besides that middle
i thought i only knew 2 songs on this album, and then spent the whole time listening going "oh yeah, dad used to play this" for nearly every single song. i think it's fair to assume..... that my dad owned this album haha. thanks dad, there's some filler towards the end but this is a 4 for me.
Really great album but hearing walk of life 50 thousand times in erectile dysfunction ads or whatever instilled in me a blinding hatred of that song so it's losing a star. An album go download and delete that song in particular
Great album, some classic songs. Very strong start to the album trailed off a bit at the end until brothers in arms. Only complaint is some songs were a bit too long but other than that very strong album.
This is always an absolute pleasure to listen to
dire straits will always be heartwarming. did not realize the lyrics of money for nothing! calm down!
I enjoy Chuck Mangione. Not, however, on an album by the dude who played the Sultans of Swing solo. Your Latest Trick is offensive coming from Knopfler. Not a bad song, just a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad arrangement. Get that nights with Delilah shit out of here and turn up the guitar.
Another classic album in the timeline of guitar evolution.
good 4.25/5
Labai gražus albumas, tikrai labai gera muzika.
Some great tracks but a bit plodding
One of the most solid rock albums of the Eighties. Contains the wonderful Walk of Life and the title track, plus the mega-hit Money for Nothing..
....
I already knew Money For Nothing but the rest of the album is almost nothing like it. Bluesy, atmospheric, really vibey.
Mark Knopfler is a genius, Sting is out of this world in Money for Nothing. Why Worry was a great discovery when I first listened to the album! IMO, the second half of the album is not as great as the first one.
I am biased. I remember when it was out when I was in 8th grade (4ème) and it was my first casette non recorded on the radio that I'd put in my first walkman. All the songs are engraved in me. But overall it aged quite well, Mark Knoffler's genius guitar, his raucaus voice... even "this little trick" with the saxo à la Kenny G goes well (with me) thanks to good song and harmonies. Well, there's the faggot verse in Money for nothing. That aged.
With such poetic lyrics, masterful blues-rock guitar, and iconic tracks like 'Sultans of Swing', 'Money for Nothing', and 'Brothers in Arms', it's impossible for me not to give this album a solid 4-star rating.
i grew up listening to mark knopfler but never actually listened to dire straits until the last year or so. i absolutely love the debut album but this one isn’t quite up to that greatness for me, it’s still a great album and i enjoy it. 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Love this record! Even better on vinyl
This is sounds more modern than the mid 80s to me.
"Money For Nothing" is worth the price of admission alone.
This album . . . 30,000,000 units sold, almost seven years in the UK album chart That MTV song, with Sting on guest vocals And the things that gets me most of all - it still sounds good today! While I still prefer the first three albums, this collection is a phenomena
A classic album
Pretty solid. I've truly never listened to Dire Straits aside from the radio hits so I didn't know what to expect. This was a pleasant surprise.
Många bangers som höjer betyget markant 👍: One World, So Far Away, Money For Nothing, Ride Across The River 👎: Walk of life, diggar inte riktigt dansbands-soundet
Some of the most profound guitar ever recorded. Couple of songs run me wrong, but overall, it's a stone cold classic that hasn't dated a day. Incredible.
Overall: 8/10 This album started off so incredibly strong, with some legendary bangers going back to back. Sadly, the album didn't keep up that momentum and became more of an atmospheric piece, which would have been fine if I had been expecting it. Not that the more atmospheric songs were bad or anything, I just wanted another rocker or two. As it stands, this was a bit weaker than the self titled, but it still gave me incentive to listen to more of their stuff. Fav Song: Money for Nothing (duh)
#3 on my random list, Absolute classic. One of the the first albums I remember listening to as a kid. The opening 3 tracks: So Far Away, Money for Nothing & Walk of Life are a great opening, then gets a bit slower and deeper. Ultimately ending with Brothers in Arms. Classic rock album.
A few anthems but let down with what could only be described as songs made to test hifi equipment
Nice one!
I love this record… mostly. Mark Knopfler is one of the most underrated virtuoso guitarists of all time. The guy’s playing is incredible. Money for Nothing (except the guitar riffs which are beyond cool), So Far Away, and Walk of Life (the first 3 tracks) are the low points for me on this record. The back row-thirds of it is awesome. I used to listen to the last 6 tracks of this record to calm myself at night in high school and college. It’s beautiful and the guitar is otherworldly.
GOOD
This was a great album - I didn’t realise how many Dire Straits songs I knew, but I had a really good time listening to this.
I've never listened to this album, but I liked it a lot. Almost gave it 5 stars. I didn't think the "hit" songs on this were as good as their best but a consistently enjoyable album.
Favorite Track: Walk of Life
Hurts me to not be able to give this one a 5. The guitar tone alone is fantastic. The beginning and end of this album is legendary shit. Money For Nothing is on here! But Why Worry and Ride Across The River drag this one down for me.
Not too bad
Solid 4 stars
Ist schon wirklich gut.
Really needed this album today. Hits you instantly in the soul. FOUR!
Lots of memories riding with my dad in his 93 cobra!
Your Latest Trick is a masterpiece on an already great album.
Obviously this is a fans favourite within my family, and I think that it has fantastic songs and mark knopfler is a brilliant guitarist in so many different ways. You know it’s a dire straits song by the sound, it’s just so distinct in a way that nobody else can match. What I would say about this record, is that through the middle it does tail off slightly, turning a little too slow and boring for what they clearly have to offer. My ex girlfriend’s dad called them ‘naff’ once when I played them in the car, and I thought he was crazy for doing so at the time. Now, I still think he’s wrong, but I can see where a percentage of the audience begin to switch off when you listen through. It just seems to tail off energy wise for me, and I think that’s why I’m not going to give it a perfect score this time.
I’ll say it - not my favorite Dire Straits album, not even close. It’s a great recording. There are some good songs, Mark and the boys are playing well. It feels a little thin to me - not as dark as it could be, not as moody as could, not as much longing or yearning as there can be in their earlier work. It’s fun enough, but not an outstanding Dire Straits album.
“Brothers in Arms, is musical virtuosity on full display, and Money For Nothing and the Walk of Life almost make this instantly a 5*, however it seems to loose focus for me personally somewhere in the middle, but those lost moments are music other artists would die to have written. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
Damn good album. Lotta classics on this one. Knopfler slays on guitar. There's some surprisingly top notch sax and some really cool sounding songs. Brothers In Arms is a beefy album, each song containing a lot of substance. No slackers on this album. Standouts are "Money For Nothing" "Walk Of Life" and "Why Worry?" This is a really solid 4 for me. It falls just short of a 5 for a couple songs just missing the mark for me.
3.5 - 4 stars
Yet another classic in my family. This has always been an interesting album to me, seeing as it's filled with some basically perfect songs, and some real duds. But, at the end of the day, I'll always give it the benefit of the doubt. "So Far Away" is poignant and understated; "Money For Nothing" has the greatest song intro basically of all time, followed by 5 minutes of perfect satire; "Walk of Life" may be the most uplifting song ever; "Why Worry" is straight up beautiful. Can't say I would relisten to the other songs here very often, but it's still a damn good album.
Jako slatki album, jako nostalgičan i zabavan. Vraća me u mladost fo sure 😁 4/5, 7/10
good
My husband owns this album and we enjoy it. Great sound.
I was really impressed with the variety of different sounds on this album, I felt like it was a really good listening experience from beginning to end. Your Latest Trick is a BANGER.
Outside Money for Nothing which is an obvious classic, the first half of the album got off to a slow start. And now I'm a known long song enjoyer, but 8.5 minutes for Why Worry was a stretch with the back 4.5 minutes being just a slow jam. But the second half of the album......the second half of the album was ridiculously good. It's like they dropped the training wheels and just started having fun with it. From Ride Across the River to the end, it felt like a different album, and one I felt compelled to listen to. Tepid 4/5, with the back half carrying.
A great album, some absolutely huge hits, guitar work is fantastic.
Really enjoyed this, knew the hits and thought the filler was all pretty nice
Haru hört dom Dirrstass? Me han Marknofflor? Manifnaffing? Haru hört dom?
some songs that are so called evergreens
This band rules.
Great album that brings back memories of listening to it
Smooth mix of songs. I had heard the two big hits and they are solid but the rest of the album holds up on its own
Absolute classic. While the first three tracks certainly got plenty of airplay, I think this album and band are actually under-rated, at least among people my age and under. Mark Knopfler is a musical genius. Having become a big Dylan fan in the decades since this album came out, it's kind of crazy listening to it now and hearing the obvious influence they had on each other during this period, something I had no way of knowing at the time being all of 10 years old.
Attendez... Tellement honte.
Very impressend by the band's sonority and variety of songs
Really good, almost 5.
Solid album. A little sleepy on the back half. Money For Nothing drips with old school MTV nostalgia. So Far Away is just cool. Walk of Life just too much of a Springsteen vibe for my taste. Brothers in Arms the vocals are a bit too Dylan for me. All in all, it's an album I'd happily add to my vinyl collection.
Solid rock and insanely 80s (probably because stalwart in part they defined the 80s sound in the first place?). So ubiquitous it sometimes almost feels cheesy, but that’s not their fault.
I used to love it, and then I hated it. Now I kind of appreciate it again.
7/10
Mark knopfler is brilliant. Every song is a banger but it feels a little like it was made to be hits
The saxophone definitely kinda dates this — in a way that it doesn't really date Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", for example — and yet it's still so smooth and catchy, you can't really fault it. Oh, and the guitar. And vocals. Good stuff.
Good album. Reminds me of my dad because he used to listen to this when we were young. I still like Making Movies better as this one is a little 80s heavy in songs
Fuckin awesome. Lots of bangers on here. Fave song: Walk of Life
this shit went kinda crazy. solid 4 but really close to a 5, might bump it up later
Brothers in Arms is a superb album from one of the greatest bands of the era, Dire Straits. I’ve always loved this record, and it remains a defining moment in their catalogue. Mark Knopfler’s guitar work is, of course, exceptional—subtle yet powerful—and it drives the entire record. The opening three tracks on Side 1 are outstanding, setting a high standard right from the start. Side 1 as a whole is incredibly strong, packed with energy and memorable hooks. Side 2, while not as consistently gripping, still holds one of the band’s true masterpieces: the title track, Brothers in Arms. It’s haunting, emotional, and one of the greatest songs Knopfler has ever written. Favourite tracks: So Far Away, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, and of course Brothers in Arms. Least favourite tracks: Your Latest Trick and Ride Across the River feel weaker compared to the rest. Without them, this would easily be a flawless 5/5 album. Album artwork: Iconic. The instantly recognisable guitar against a soft blue sky is as timeless as the music itself.
Dang.... some classics. I guess I never really listened to Dire Straits deliberately
Damn, what a great album from start to finish. I really enjoyed it, especially because It starts off strong and then eases into a more relaxed vibe toward the end, which I actually love. Not every song has to push to the absolute peak sometimes slowing things down creates a higher impact in the long run. Top Tracks: “Money For Nothing”, “Walk of Life”, “Brothers in Arms”.
again one of my favourite albums, beautiful voice, guitar, specific genre to itself,
thoughts: “money for nothing” just hits a million times better with that sting intro, my god. it’s wild to me how we went from that song to the…smooth jazz?…of “your latest trick” in the span of two songs. (not complaining though; the latter song grew on me quick.) i’ve learned through 59 days of this project that 80s musical acts love dipping their toes into world music-ish things, and the middle of this album is no different. the guitar is great, knopfler’s vocals are very fitting and yeah, this is good stuff. songs: “so far away”, “money for nothing” (album version!), “your latest trick” rating: 7.0/10
Like most Dire Straits albums, pretty good with one absolute cracker of a track.
Good excuse to listen to a classic, maybe my first time listening all the way through.
This one is so familiar from my youth it's impossible to score. Feels like comfort food at this point. Anyway, I'm unhip, so I still love this, but there are a few weaker tracks in there.
An absoulte classic with iconic songs as Money for Nothing and Walk of Life
Brothers in Arms is the definition of smooth. Mark Knopfler’s guitar tone alone could probably calm down a riot, and his vocals have that relaxed, storyteller quality that makes the whole thing feel easy and unforced. The big radio singles are here of course, “Money for Nothing” with its iconic riff and cheeky lyrics, and “Walk of Life” with its pub piano bounce. What really gives the album its weight are the slower, moodier moments. The title track and “Your Latest Trick” in particular show how good Knopfler is at creating atmosphere with just a few notes. It does lean into 80s slickness, with that shiny production and plenty of reverb, but it never feels empty. Instead it comes across as carefully measured, almost cinematic in places. Some tracks stretch on longer than they really need to, but that unhurried pace is also part of its character. It is music that invites you to sit with it, to let the guitars shimmer and the grooves unroll. Brothers in Arms might not be edgy, but it is confident, timeless, and far more affecting than its polished exterior might suggest.
The first half of this album is a 5 star album and the second half is three stars. It starts off really interesting but there's a disconnect and a lot of the final tracks are pretty bland (though the guitar work is still skillful). Favorite tracks: "Money for Nothing," maybe "Ride Across the River"
the last trick money for nothing walk of life
Mark Knopfler is such a beast, I've heard multiple non-musicians ask if what he's doing is hard. It takes a good player to play difficult music. It takes a monster to make it sound like you could play it. I like this album less than their self titled debut, but the highs are higher. Money for Nothin' and Walk of Life are both killer singles. The title track and The Man's Too Strong are also great, but as a whole the album gets a little wanky to me. Knopfler may have supreme taste when it comes to guitar playing, but his arrangements are so... long. I wouldn't call it pretentious, though I think it teases in that direction. It's just that every track uses so much breath that the music becomes kind of airy. You see it even on Money for Nothin'. Sitting down and actually listening to that song is worth it, there is an incredible amount of musicianship in there, but it stays well past it makes its point. I think that's why Walk of Life is my favorite Dire Straits song. The band could have so much oomph behind them if they just got to the point and ended the damn songs.
Rather liked this one. Not all amazing but all solid. Favorites were So Far Away, Why Worry? (added to vibes playlist immediately), The Man’s Too Strong (had heard before but didn’t really know), and Brothers in Arms. Only one I knew going into this was Money for Nothing which was definitely good but didn’t stand out as much in the context of the album. 7/10, 4 stars.
The Man's Too Strong
I forgot how many great songs are on this album. Side one is phenomenal. Side two is good but ends with a banger. I think if you cut 2 songs from the second side, this would be an all time favorite.
Damn…
Favourite songs: So far away Ride across the river
Listened and knew it well
Always a classic
I feel like Dire Straits aren't *cool* in the way other bands of their era are, but I'll always have a special spot in my heart for them. Their vibe feels very meat and potatoes: they're not pop, but they're also really not doing anything particularly innovative by the 1980s. They're just making music and building it really well. Mark Knopfler's guitar skills are big of course. Listening notes: -So Far Away perfectly illustrates this. Is there anything here that couldn't have been done twenty years prior? I don't really think so (maybe someone else in this project will correct me when I post this). But it's good and well done -Money for Nothing--made them a bajillion dollars and got them a one-star rating from Daniel. When the buildup drops out and there's just the guitar. Oh that's what it's all about. Incidentally this song is pretty vapid, but with that intro, I really don't care. -Walk of Life--why am I even responding to individuals songs at this point? Just bangers on bangers. -Your Latest Trick--They even get away with kinda schmalzy kitschy sax stuff. They've got me good. -Why Worry--and they finally slow down. The transition from pop super-hits to this slower meditative second half of the album probably could be smoother. First 4 songs and and last 5 seem to have no cohesion. -The entire back half here is a little odd. Ride Across the River and Man's Too Strong have this "Are we the baddies?" view that I find conceptually interesting (and not too poorly done), but how they fit with the first half is anyone's guess and they don't get enough space to breathe. -I'll always love the title track here, ostensibly about the Falklands War (a bizarre footnote in history if there ever was one). Review: I like basically every track on this album. And I like them at a guts level, where their lyrics feel largely irrelevant. But if I stop to compare the artistry to other 5-star albums, it's difficult to say they hold up well. I think ultimately this is a 4.5 star for me, but I'm rounding down on account of lack of cohesion and not really developing the themes they explore well enough. But that's a very tough round-down for me. I've certainly given 5 stars to albums I loved less.
ganz nett jo
The second Dire Straits album this week and I’m not disappointed. Great rhythms and harmonies from this band and this record is no different. Great vibe throughout and makes for a really easy listen.
Yes
Very easy to listen to. Love the Knopfler guitar style. Not a bad song on there. Im a sucker for trivia, so this being the first cd to sell over 1 million copies adds to the legacy of this record for me. But this lp misses big hits and a change of pace in its laid back sound to make it more interesting.
Mark Knopfler is my hero
Around release time for this album we had a few people from Italy come stay with us for a summer (we had sort of an exchange thing going) and we went to see Dire Straits up at Poplar Creek while they were here. On the drive there, Vic, who was probably in his early twenties, asked us about the lyrics to "Money For Nothing" as he was curious as to why he got his 'cheese for free.' - Forty years later I still hear 'cheese for free.' - I will always hear 'cheese for free' With that said, I always considered this to be a good but not great Dire Straits album. It's now been 40 years since it came out, and it was so overplayed at the time that I am still not ready to listen to most of these songs again. My quota was reached back then and is still remarkably near the maximum. I do like "Your Latest Trick" and "Brothers In Arms" occasionally though. Making Movies is way better!
First half had me hooked. It kind of slowed down after that.
1st side of the album is nothing but classics, 2nd side it drops off- until Brothers in Arms at the end
3,6/5
Brothers in Arms
Oh how 80’s rock has my heart, shoutout to my dad for blasting this genre of music every weekend in the mornings to start his day. Love how this album is such easy listening. The perfect album to pop on while cooking, cleaning, studying or commuting. Love the riffs in Money for Nothing, and was pleased to hear the familiar opening in ‘Walk Of Life’, a song I have definitely heard before. My favourite is ‘Why Worry?’, a more layered song. Didn’t know how iconic this album/band was, but very pleased to familiarise myself with the album in full and have already listened to multiple times.
First great album by these guys. Love Knopflers solo work as well.
Great songs. Sterile 80s production.
Jazzy, bluesy, funky. This album covers a vast array. Money for nothing, so far away, walk of life, all classics. Knopflers guitar work remains some of the greatest in the industry.
Great album, some tracks better than others. Ride across the river has to be my favourite. Love the start up to Your latest trick. 4 stars, very nearly 5, but like others have mentioned, the homophobic slurs are not helping, otherwise automatic 5 star. Unclear if the slurs are self directed.
Front loaded with jams. The rest of the tracks are like 3-4 minutes too long.
I wannt my emteeveeeeeeeee
1. So Far Away - 2 Completely monotonous in it's lyrics, the drums, and especially in the chorus. I want this song to stay so far away from me. It's very very boring. 2. Money For Nothing - 9 The guitar is really what you come here for and you're not disappointed. Brilliant sound. Lyrics contain some pretty heinous stuff which I understand for the era wasn't considered that and I also understand the meaning behind them in the track but it doesn't make listening to them any easier in the modern day. 3. Walk Of Life - 10 Vocals sound very good here and the guitar leads the song brilliantly. Very easy to find yourself singing along to it. 4. Your Latest Trick - 7 Sax sounds amazing on this track. Slower track which highlights the vocals more and they sound good on this piece. There's a few lines that are really rushed on the track where I think the verses suffer but overall, not that big or significant. 5. Why Worry - 5 Song is just way too long. Lyrically it's fine, instrumentally it's fine but it's so slow and so long it feels like I'm being lulled to sleep. Could have been 4 minutes. 6. Ride Across The River - 7 Interesting vibe on the track. Instrumentally it's very enjoyable over the 7 minutes. Lyrically it's a bit too simple. Still, you can't go wrong when the guitar plays out like it does on the end of the track. 7. The Man's Too Strong - 8 Guitars sound immense on this track. It builds and fades in and out of the more intense parts wonderfully. Very enjoyable. 8. One World - 10 Best track on the album. Guitar between the verses is brilliant. Drum line is amazing. Absolutely excellent sound. 9. Brothers in Arms - 9 Brilliant sound. Slower song but it's given the guitar space to really dominate the sound and it does so perfectly. Synthesizer at the end is excellent. Average Rating: 7.44 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 3.72 Rounded Up: 4 Stars
‘I want my MTV!”. This album takes me back to the days when MTV was king. Money for Nothing was on MTV all the time. But there are many other tracks on the album which are good. The first three songs are the best in my opinion.
8/10 solid album
Álbum excelente! QoA Vesper
I want to like this more then I do, banging album at the start, but starts to drag a bit then ends on a high note. Still a great album just feels like it could be legendary.
such a great album. brothers in arms is a fantastic song
A classic, Money for nothing is my second wind song when I'm running so obvs a big fan
It made me learn how some minorities feel.
Favorites: So Far Away, Your Latest Trick, Ride Across the River, One World
3,75
It’s not so bad
Gucci
Feels good man.
Hard to find any flaws in this album. Melodic with a lot of variation between songs. Easy listen.
It was different and not very cohesive but good music!
Sentimentality, Knopfler's singular guitar stylings, some fretless bass, and my West-Wing-influenced love for the title song help this album rise above the slog of some of these songs to a generous four star rating.
Yeah, that’s the good stuff
Love this album
Podoba mi sie -- zgrane
songs are a but too long at times but otherwise its peak dad rock 8/10
I have heard this one before. it's a great album that startes really strong with the first 4 tracks. It gradually lost me after "Why Worry?" but "Brothers in Arms" is a very strong closing track. Knofler is an amazing guitarist and Terry Williams the drummer is fantastic. Top Tracks: "So Far Away", "Money For Nothing", "Walk of Life", "Your Latest Trick" (LOVE this song), "Brothers in Arms" 4.2/5
Incredible start, decent filling, and strong finish.
Very nice moments 3.5
There was one song on "Brothers in Arms" that I seriously loved. Its name is "Why Worry", the fifth track. Everything else was of high quality. The songs after "Why Worry" could've done with improvement. I can't wait until the next album. 4 stars for "Brothers in Arms".
Some absolutely iconic songs/riffs on this album. The sound aesthetic is definitely of its time and largely not to my taste. But there's no arguing with the quality of writing and playing on this record!
(8 to a shy 9/10) This album is versatile; it can be rock, it can give you a little country, and also pop perfection. A great album at its time
Some great songs and even better guitar work.
Já conhecia. Meu pai ouvia quando eu era criança. Muito nostálgico.
Great album, somehow despite most of the songs being more than 6 minutes long it doesn't drag on. Except for that smooth sax one, that kinda does.
Great dad rock. Classic singles here. Great licks on the guitar. Really dug Brothers in Arms.
Finally a good album. One song kept it from a 5 star rating. Everything else on the album was great.
I will always remember Homer driving up in an ice cream truck with the intro to Money for Nothing playing. Good stuff
If you hate this just try again, it actually gets better.
Some absolute classics on here. What an iconic guitar sound.
Love Walk of Life.
it was good
Great album
It was a interesting album with good songs. I especially liked the guitar solo on money for nothing.
Very noice
Only real familiar with their hits, but very easy listening and great album. Will listen to again and familiarise myself more with this in future. Listened to while cleaning my shed.
Difficult first listen hearing the transition from the iconic first three songs to something more like Al Stevens, although it does pick back up in places. Much easier second listen.
Still quite a good album, I must say. Only complaint is some of the music's a bit "adult contemporary" for my taste.
This album is iconic and really has a place on this list but half of the album is filler songs I feel. Otherwise it would have been a solid 5.
not their best, easier than others but a so good album
Rating: 4.5 Notable songs: money for nothing, walk of life, brothers in arms Genuinely an absolute classic of an album full of gems. Just misses out on the 5
It feels wrong to give this wonderful album only 4 stars, but the inclusion of Walk of Life and Money for Nothing weakens it severely. Those are novelty tracks that have no place next to the sublime Why Worry and Brothers in Arms, or even the rest of the tracks.
nodding disapprovingly when they use the slur to let people know that i don't approve of it
Nice and retro
Such a great variety of musical styles and lyrics. Not a weak track on the whole album for me.
Few people make the 80’s sound as good as Dire Straits. 4/5
This was terrific in my teens. And it still is great now, except I did not listen it for many years.
3.6 3x+ listened over multiple days. not perfect too many classics to rate less than 4
Alright, let's talk about Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms. This one's a solid 4 stars, no question. This album is a total time warp back to the 80s. Seriously, it's like a soundtrack to MTV and all that glorious excess. "Money for Nothing" pretty much nails the whole vibe of the decade, from the guitar riff to the lyrics. And yeah, Sting on that track? Still blows my mind how many people don't realize it's him. Classic. Beyond that one hit, the whole album holds up really well. It's just good, solid music. Listening to it now throws me right back to high school, those long summer nights, and feeling like we had the time of our lives. It just fits that era perfectly. Definitely a keeper.
Some real incredible highs. a few boring songs, but overall a great album
3 or a 4?
Interesting. I know the singles. Definitely underrated guitar player.
Honestly, if the album was just the first three songs, this would still be four stars. The balance of the LP is fine. Might grow on me with additional listens.
Oh, yeah. Excellent. 4.5/5
I had actually been in to Dire Straits / Mark Knoffler a bit before this came out, hence the pop sound of this made it a very different album. And also made it very hard for Dire Straits to be Dire Straits later on. I quickly liked it a lot - Walk of Life was my song to blast while I walked home from the bus after school. Latest Trick, Why Worry, Ride Across, Man Too Strong - were all kinda classic Dire Straits. My early fav was the title track which the world discovered later. And of course the video that changed everything.
I liked this actually I’m surprised Folk/Pop/rock I can understand what they are saying and I enjoyed the instruments one very track
Funny misconception I had, the song “Walk of Life” I would’ve bet money l that it was written by a early 2000s band akin to like “send me on my way” by Rusted Roots. I know that doesn’t matter as far as the review goes but it felt weird learning the song I thought was 20 yrs old is actually 50yrs old. But that aside, this album has aged very well. It’s nearly a no skip album. Lots of variety and talent on this album. This is just a personal thing but I don’t love the lead singers voice but the instrumentation totally makes up for that and then some. It’s a definite must if you like classic rock. (In hindsight, the fact that I thought one of the songs was only 20 yrs old shows how well specific songs have aged).
A lovely, mellow album. Dire Stairs always remind me breeze on a summer evening. Favorite song: Walk Of Life Least favorite: Your Latest Trick
Listening to the whole thing for the first time in ages, it feels incredibly dated, mostly, I think, because of the production but also, I think that most of the songs are a bit longer than they need to be.
This is great. I had wrongly written these guys off as shopping mall rock, turns out they're actually unbelievable musicians. Money For Nothing is an outrageous track - most memorable opening and riff I can remember hearing in a long time. And there are similarly sick moments all over the album. Maybe some of it is overlong. But I enjoyed the whole thing. High 4*
Mark Knopfler's incredible guitar playing and tone manage to cut through the oh-so-80's production to keep this album above most of its contemporaries. Award an extra half-star for the use of the title track in the closing scene of the classic episode of "Miami Vice", "Out Where the Busses Don't Run." It features acclaimed character actor Bruce McGill and future Oscar© nominee David Strathairn. The episode is widely considered to be the best and most significant in the the history of television.
Fantastic throwback right away in the first two songs. No, three. After that, it was fine.
The pop in the first half is so good. The soft rock that follows is great too. An 80s classic.
Le Classique
I never expected this to have a lot of depth. I just assumed most of the songs would be like Money for Nothing. I wasn’t expecting the soft rock stuff. Regardless, the guitar playing is excellent. Mark Knopfler really elevates the majority of this album…well really the first side. Honestly, I’m a little relieved a lot of reviews say that the second half kind of lags behind the first. I think the lengthy song times might be responsible for that. As for the whole f-word part, it’s a little jarring, but I don’t think it ruins anything. It’s supposed to come from somebody’s point of view who’s kind of stupid. Could they have avoided the word? Sure. But besides that, that was a pretty solid album. Favorite track: Money for Nothing Other hits: Why Worry, Your Latest Trick, Walk of Life, Brothers in Arms, One World
Just enough great guitar work to merit a fourth star. "Money for Nothing" may not have aged particularly well, but lots of nostalgia on this album.
A mature blend of catchiness and complexity, the production, tones, and general drive of this album makes it a consistently fun listen It's a cool note that this is the first million unit CD ever sold. Also a guest appearance from Sting
7/10 Money for Nothing is epic, 10/10. So Far Away and Walk of Life are great. But it does lag and drift for long stretches - you just want to give it a boot up the butt in the 2nd half.
Knopfler is a wizard
1. So Far away - easy listening - good song but way to long. 3/5 2. Money for nothing - classic song - very Pink Floyd-ish. Iconic guitar riff - 5/5 3. Walk of life - good song but not as good as MFN. 4/5. 4. Your latest trick - soft jazz song - 2/5. 5. Why worry now? - another soft listening song. 2/5 6. Ride across the river - Another easy listening song. 2/5 7. The man's too strong - Country song - 3/5 8. One world - strong rock/slap bass. - 3/5 9. Brothers in Arms - a bit dull - 2/5
Some awesome songwriting here and amazing musical talent. The title track is the highlight to finish. 'So Far Away', 'Money for Nothing' and 'Your Latest Trick' are other awesome tracks. Knopfler is one of the best to ever do it.
Not a bad start.
E Achterbahnfahrt vo Ohrmuschel-schmeichelnde psychadelische rock Kläng zu nervende Oberschenkelchlopfende Cöntry wie "Walk of Life" (wie au immer das Lied ihres zweit beliebtiste isch??) Money For Nothing het hald eis vode beste Song Intros ide Musiggschicht, Walk of Life isch für mich defür eis vode überbewertiste Lieder wo ned so ganz i das Album passt.
A classic 80s banger!
This is good 80s rock, that toes a line of pop rock. Dire Straits brings together so many elements from the 70s era and blends together with 80s production and sounds. The blues guitar and funky, swift bass lines are so groovy. They write goods songs that have catchy vocals with good range and the lyrics are not mind blowing but are more than just cliches and have actual substance. Dire Straits does everything Bruce Springsteen does, but better and with more soul.
Some incredible songs here and the guitar work is some of my favorite, Money for Nothing man wow. I will say the sound on some of the songs is a little dated and there are a few filler songs here that brings it to a 4. Love the album though
My love for fretless bass, idiosyncratic guitar soloing, singers that can't really sing, and mid-80s sentimentality elevates this above the boring parts.
Tuttua ja nättiä nuoruudenmusiikkia
It's difficult for me to rate this album fairly because I grew up listening to it and Dire Straits were an influential band in developing my musical tastes. Although 'Money for Nothing' remains a banger, a lot of the album now sounds a bit schmaltzy and over-sentimental. What can't be denied is Knopfler's signature guitar playing greatness. Still a good album and a classic, with added nostalgia value for me.
7/10 This was a wonderful creation of an album. It felt relaxing to hear the collection of brass and guitar, and I always love concept records such as Money for Nothing. Not all the lyrics landed for me though. Also, this is my first Dire Straits album. Therefore I’m not getting the appeal quite yet. Brothers in arms definitely deserves a relisten once I’m more familiar with the Band and Mark Knopfler.
Great Album! 4.1/5
very good musically, some off-color lyrics that put me off, and I definitely recognize this as smth that's been heavily sampled which is always fun
Fantastic. New age and classic
Strong album in Dire Straits catalogue, probably best known as well.
The ballads are pretty damn cheesy. Otherwise a good album. Hard to believe they’re a British band. They sound American.
This kinda surprised me a little. I like how it drifted in a different direction after the hits that kick off the album. 7/10
i want my mtv
Super strong start but they kind of lost me towards the end of the album. Great band either way.
fantastic - lots of memories when they were always on mtv the radio etc - but I like older DS rather than 80s DS still a great listen
This is a band in full command. I love how they let theses songs breathe and are in no hurry. Why Worry? is lush and dreamy. And Money For Nothing has an all time riff that is unforgettable. One of the greatest openers to a rock song and Sting complements it flawlessly. I will always connect to this band and this album because of how much my dad played it. The Man’s Too Strong was one that he particularly liked. I have vivid memories of him playing those power chords at max volume. It’s a beautiful thing to pass music down to your children.
smooth blues-rock wit ha couple of hits
Listened in August 2021. I'm not a Dad so this isn't really aimed at me, but it's got some great tunes.
öberraschend nice gsi. paar sehr nice sogar. aber alli lieder recht lang was easy esch aber mengisch fasch echli laangzoge style
brabo
“You’re latest trick” and the title track still sound awesome to me. Guitar work is perfect without being too wanky, even if it still makes me think of Miami Vice. Solid 4 * for me
That this was such a hit feels like an accident. This might be their fourth-best record (trailing the debut, Making Movies and Love Over Gold) in one's humble opinion. The more contemplative second side holds up a bit better but the ultimate '80s production touches feel a bit unfortunate on more than a few cuts. The hits are fine, if "Money for Nothing" annoying in its ubiquity and nowhere near "Have a Cigar" say in terms of being anti-music business music. "So Far Away" is better than that one and "Walk of Life." "One World" and "Your Latest Trick" are best cuts. Their videos weren't great, either, but Knopfler seemed to just phone it in on that aspect anyway. A fun listen, but much of this is forgettable compared to their (mostly) earlier peaks and one or two later moments.
7/10 solid rock album, nostalgic af
Three immortal songs to open this album make it an event
epic. iconic guitar riffs, iconic guitar sounds. great songs, even beyond the hits.
It was a decent 80’s album
Money For Nothing carries this album but it's too strong.
Dated but still great. Can't listen to brothers in arms without a tear or two.
A classic, great album overall. But there are a few sleepy spots that do not rival the highlights.
I know about a dozen guitarists who would kill for Mark Knopfler's sound on Money for Nothing, and about 7 dozen radio stations who were kept alive because of every other song on the album. Take the overplayed exhaustion and homophobia out of it, and the album is actually pretty astonishing.
Neeeeeeew new new new neweewwwwwwww do da da dee noowwwww neee
Very good. Some great songs. Some good songs.
3.5
8/10. I'M ON MY MTV!!!!! :)
My final album from the generator. Something so smooth and polished, it almost makes too much sense. There is a sweet sorrow that fills this record after the first three tracks, swimming in atmosphere that captures the beautiful range of human experience. Brothers In Arms dares to zoom out, see the bigger picture, and be a little morose about it all. It's built on the backs of greats: Dylan, Morrison, Waters, Berry. We seek deeper connections between art and artists, following the string that binds all of these albums together. What connects the Beatles to Oasis, or Throbbing Gristle to Nine Inch Nails? Where do we mark innovation, pioneering sound into music that sends reverberations across the landscape of popular music? Why do we care about these things so much? I love music and the ways it's made me reflect on the artform in a broader sense. I love when it challenges me and makes me dissect my own biases or beliefs. We take so much for granted when its on the radio, in the background, filling up our days to avoid the monotony of silence. I hope I managed to avoid this passive approach more often than not with this list and gave each album a fair shake. I have my own thoughts and criticisms of the list, but ultimately believe that my life is better having listened to 1001 (plus 85 more) albums before I died.
Classic snd eminently listenable
I WANT MYYYYY Immediately can see a couple well loved songs on this album The album starts off with a lot of energy, but halfway through all the energy goes away and becomes a dull, somber affair. Love the first half of the album, the second half is pretty dull. Brothers in Arms does send the album off on a strong point, however.
Groovy, interesting and weirdly relaxing. No complaints
Some tracks are really good! Some are too slow and melodramatic.
The cover reminds me of a Calculus textbook
Transported me right back to childhood listening to the radio with mum & dad. Album full of great songs.
Good straight ahead rock. I didn’t think about it much deeper than that.
Ja holy shit. Das sind einfach so geile Rock classics. Teilweise etwas slow. LG
4/5
Awesome album.
Classic album. Really like this, although I prefer their "no keyboard"-oriented sound more
Classic, easy going
Pretty good - loved the rhythm
Not my favorite Dire Straits album, but still a great listen!
Cheesy glorious saxophone, made me feel like I was in romancing the stone.
Real good listening
Really great album

mooi album... iets te zacht ....
Coll British soul rock
Another good one
Always love these guys.
Pretty solid, reminds me of my dad
I know the first three songs are monster hits, but I also appreciate the quieter, more melancholy second half of the album.
The hits on this one bring back great memories, and the album hits hard out of the gate with all the big songs coming in a row. The rest of the album is okay, but the album is let down in a sense because the best songs are just that much better than what comes next. But those hits are SO good that it makes this release a top tier release.
Never listened to a Dire Straits album before and a really regret it. This album mixes a few different genres really well and is super enjoyable all the way through. Could give it 5 stars on repeat listens but I’ll stick to 4 for now
80s kids were either freaked out or mesmerized by the Money for Nothing music video. Great times. There are some gems on here, but the albums loses its momentum near the end. I'll still give 4 stars for nostalgia's sake.
I am a big fan of Dire Straits. Musically this is my least favorite album of theirs. Musicianship and production quality are top-notch. My favorite tracks are, "One World" and "The Man's Too Strong". 4 stars.
The hits are great. Good instrumentals throughout. Vibey/chill. Fave song: money for nothing
Peak (my) dad rock.
Super entspannend
beautiful
Liked it a lot more than I thought I would. And a few familiar songs from my youth.
Enjoyed this a lot. Mark Knopfler is amazing and the band sounds great. First three songs are bangers.
This is an essential 80s rock album. Its got everything you could need. You got the MTV mega hit "Money for Nothing". You got ballads like "Your Latest Trick". "Walk of Life" is a perfect roadtrip song. Then topping it all off with the fantastic title track as the closer. Dad's everywhere triumph! Favorite track: Walk of Life
I consider this album to be the first battle in the war that ended with the death of Vinyl. A fully digital production relased on CDs, this album has some of the best sounding tracks for the time and has a great blend of that pub sound with the influence of the 80s. Brothers in Arms will go down as one of the greatest songs ever produced and that intro to Money For Nothing is enough to make a grown man cry. The only reason that I docked a couple notches for this rating is that I have a feeling that I want to like this album more than I actually do for some reason. I think I prefer their self-titled debut a bit more than this monolith for its simiplicity and energy. That being said, this is a mandatory listen if you want to have any opinion about music at all and will consistently pop up on lists around the world. 8/10
Great band. I've listened their music for a long time now. My favorites uplifting tunes would have to be Money for Nothing and Walk of Live. A great album overall.
3.5 The struggle I have with Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler in general is that I usually only like 4 songs on their albums, but those 4 are so exquisite and well played that it’s hard not to rate by those. Anyway, that’s what is worth talking about. Brothers in Arms is such a great song, so well played, such great chords, guitar tone dynamics and feeling that I can listen to it on nearly repeat. Just never gets old. Knopfler has just such amazing touch, I just sometimes wish he was a little more ambitious than some of the rote bar band songs that he likes to fall back on. It his playing is always top notch. On Why worry his playing is so delicate and “tasteful’
Killer first side, snoozer of a second. Still, overall strong album. 3.8/5
A classic, this album is so well done and produced that your ears feel like they are in heaven while listening to it. There are a couple of well known hits on here, along with some nice ballads. Sonically perfect, the songs flow nicely and the atmosphere is consistent throughout.
