OK Computer

What is there to say about this album. It's an absolute masterpiece from beginning to end. It's also the beginning of one of the greatest three album runs in the history of recorded music. What's more, the more I listen to this album, the more I like it. It just works on every level. Even songs that I would find annoying on a lesser album, like Fitter Happier manage to fit into this album. It's dark and beautiful, wounded yet resilient. 5/5

This is undoubtedly one of the best albums of all time. I was going to list my favorite songs, but then I realized I was just typing all the tracks on here in order. Even "Fitter Happier", which is a text to speech program coldly reading words from a list manages to make me emotional. Seriously can't name a single thing I dislike about this album. Not only is this a 5/5, it's also a 10/10. Love these little British music goblins. Looking forward to giving The Bends the same score as well. Maybe Kid A as well.

‘OK Computer’ is that nice mid-point between Radiohead’s earlier, straight forward guitar rock and the more experimental, electronic path they would take with ‘Kid A’ and ‘Amnesiac’. It’s also better than I remember, and has uncannily ended up being as relevant today (probably more so) than when it was released. It captures that quiet sense of desperation, alienation, isolation, loneliness, and paranoia we all feel in modern society. Feelings that were always there lurking in the background, but which have really come to the fore over the last few years, what with a global pandemic and lockdowns, the rise and rise of surveillance by overreaching governments, our reliance on tech in general, our obsession with social media, the outbreak of war in Ukraine, our shitty corporate jobs getting even shittier, the mindless commodification of every aspect of our lives: and this is just the tip of the iceberg. ‘OK Computer’ taps into all of this and more. Its an album that’s direct enough to speak to us in the here and now, but ambiguous enough that it will always sound current in future times.

I didn't like Radiohead much at the time - and I've got to admit that while a few of their songs are really good, I have never really been able to mesh with their vibe. Saying that, the good really is good and both the production value and musicianship are superb.

Wasn't great honestly

This is one of the best top-to-bottom albums I ever heard. Usually, when I'm disappointed in an album it's because I'm hoping I'll feel about it the way I feel about this one on the first listen. This is the peak of Radiohead's work. Everything after this feels like interesting ideas but not a cohesive whole. I also had way more time on my hands when this came out than I do now so who knows.

What's the big deal here? It's alright, reasonably listenable rock music. A singer who is by turns affecting and irritating, and some really crap production choices, are the standouts here. Decent drummer, too

Is there another band that benefitted as much from their 3rd album as Radiohead did with this one? (Okay, just Googled that question and there's a ton: Born to Run, Dookie, Songs for the Deaf, Slippery When Wet, and so forth. Forget I even brought it up.) Anyway, yeah it still seems strange to me listening to this again for the 9,000th time that *this* is the record that scored higher with critics and audiences than The Bends. Especially on the heels of such a giant hit in "Creep," it makes zero sense in hindsight why The Bends was not more warmly received in the US than it was - and yet OK Computer was hyped beyond belief right out of the gate. I remember Matt Pinfield on MTV talking about how good this album was before it was released and then playing the video for "Paranoid Android." And you know, you hear that song the first time and it's real easy to go "What the hell is this?" Somehow people got it. Next thing you know, Radiohead is goddamn everywhere. The fact that they were the same band that hit with "Creep" became part of the narrative. It was like validation that they weren't just a one hit wonder and everybody was happy about it. BUT... The Bends exists! Why didn't that happen at the same level when "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" were on MTV?? Those are easier songs to digest than "Paranoid Android," right? I. Do. Not. Understand. Society. But hey at least they got behind another good album. Listening now, I could lop off "Electioneering" and "Climbing Up the Walls," and probably be happier with the total package. But the guitars on "Let Down"... I will not ever get tired of that. Sad Radiohead makes me happy.

It’s hard to be a Radiohead fan. Their LPs, often their individual songs, are tests of emotional endurance. 'OK Computer' is the sound of desperation, pure and simple. ‘No alarms and no surprises. (Get me out of here,)’ sings Thom Yorke, and his delivery puts him in that rare breed of vocalists who can take an otherwise sunny melody (‘No Surprises’) and sing it into a gathering of dark storm clouds. Likewise, his ultra-personal imaginative take on William Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'-‘Exit Music (For a Film)’- is performed with exquisite passion, but is also crushingly gloomy. He’s none to gentle on others, either. From ‘Paranoid Android’: ‘When I am king you will be first against the wall with your opinion which is of no consequence… at… all.’ ‘The Tourist’ is about the closet thing you’re going to find on 'OK Computer' to an inspiring, positive song, and even then, the most uplifting lyric in it is: ‘Idiot, slow down!’ Meanwhile, the other members of Radiohead do their part in offering musical expression to these anxious lyrics, as do the recording engineers. In fact, the whole thing is purposefully recorded and mixed as if the volume levels were pushing their limits. It has a distorted, ‘crashy’ kind of sound that tends to wear on the listener’s patience. I felt somewhat unsettled throughout the entire LP. On a good note, there’s a lot of musical honoring of classic rock artists sprinkled all over 'OK Computer,' like the Beatles ‘Sexy Sadie’-inspired piano part on ‘Karma Police.’ And if you’re a fan of progressive rock, in particular, Radiohead’ll give you enough time signature changes and dynamics and such to hold your interest. Talented and creative players, they can get too busy, as on ‘Electioneering.’ Ending the LP with the much slower ‘The Tourist’ in contrast to all that had gone on before was a bold, but successful idea. In the end, I appreciated more than enjoyed 'OK Computer.' This LP requires a large measure of emotional wellness before listening. It ain’t ‘OK Pollyanna,’ not by a long shot.

In which the jangly tunings and wool-gathering lyricism of 90s indie are retrofitted to the studio gimcrackery and stadium heroics of U2 and injected with turn-of-the-century received fatalism. Is it commercially calculated? No doubt. Does it also aspire to art rock? Just as little doubt. Are the two compatible? You betcha. Do they pull it off? Commercially: er, duh. But an art rock masterpiece? Hm. ‘Fitter Happier’ might be as high-concept as they get. In which case, answer’s no. The aesthetic's there, but it's all tell-don’t-show and heavy-handed emotional manipulation. That's pretty much my biggest problem with Radiohead. You’re given no other option but to feel down. I suppose I blame Thom Yorke, who has the emotional range of a mood ring. In a lot of ways, he’s the sandbag stopping this hot air balloon from taking off—or from taking off higher than it does. Because there’s no doubting that much of what’s here is dense, layered, and precise, screened by a veneer of uncertainty. There are thrash-outs, bass ‘n’ guitar counterpoints, clattering drums, seismic reverberations, and exceptionally difficult acoustic/electric combos. They rarely miss a cue to move a song to the next act, either. All of which leaves me feeling the same way I have about for the last decade. Amazing musicians, big ideas, lame lyrics, lousy singer. Where's the lift? Why are they ina constant state of deflation? Why do so many people get a kick out of lethargy?

I just don't enjoy this style of singing -- it's just too downer, too much "whine" in his voice, and I don't like when I can't understand most of the words. Ok musically but I don't find this pleasurable to listen to

Back to unenjoyable Radiohead. Nothing really of note on this album other than I didn't care for it.

Super hot or miss album for me. Some of it was good and enjoyable, some sounded like Muse who I do not care for. I liked this album instrumentally but the vocals weren’t always my favorite.

Comme bien des gens de mon âge, j'ai énormément écouté cet album que je considère comme un chef-d'oeuvre. À l'époque où je l'ai découvert, j'étais dans une forme de rejet de la musique en anglais, j'en avais tellement entendu qu'il me semblait qu'il devait y avoir autre chose. J'écoutais de la chanson française, de la musique du monde, du jazz... et cet album, en boucle.

Very enjoyable. No one song really stood out to me though.

Epic, important and progressive rock music. They rejected Britpop and created a masterpiece of textured, sometimes hook-laden rock that definitely was not easy or formulaic. Great.

It’s entirely possible this was the wrong day to listen to this album. Being on a 5-hour flight seemed a great opportunity to listen to the album of the day and pass the time. It did not pass the time. Long, dreary, whiny songs made five minutes seem like five hours and I got restless and claustrophobic in my seat and I had to break up the listening into intervals. I do imagine that on a different day I might have liked it somewhat, but today was not the day.

This is one that I need to spend some more time with. Yesterday was not the best day for a focused listen and today I am simply exhausted. There were some appealing moments and some others that were a real challenge.

Full disclosure: prior to today I'd never listened to a Radiohead album, couldn't name a Radiohead song. I was looking forward to hearing what everyone else has been talking about for the last 25 years. A couple of the songs (Airbag and Subterranean Homesick Alien) grabbed me by the heart and declared themselves mine immediately. I found Exit Music, Electioneering, and Lucky entertaining. And the rest, even through multiple listens today, just OK. Like I felt with Blur's Modern Life is Rubbish, this album feels to me like a reaction to something and I can't quite tell what that something is but it makes the band hard to pin down, to put in a love-it/like-it/don't-care-for-it box. I love Airbag and SHA enough though to give this four stars.

This is likely my all time favorite album from one of my all time favorite groups. What seemed like an apocalyptic glimpse into what might be instead is a disturbingly accurate description of this century. OK COMPUTER is the soundtrack to the disillusionment I have experienced as I witness technology’s total inability to deliver us from our own evils. And yet even as we ignore its dire warning this album is one of a very few that lit my way through some of the darker passages my life has taken. I cannot overstate its importance to me over the last 20 years. The best album to come out of the 90’s still sounds like it is one step ahead of us.

OK Computer by Radiohead (1997) This record came out when I was at the peak of my flight from popular music, and I’m sorry I missed it (although I wouldn’t have swapped it for Wagner, Mahler, and/or Bruckner). OK Computer is really good on this, my first serious listen. The lyrics are full of frustration, alienation, and unsystematic, aimless social/political discontent, including lament and personal anger over the way things are at the end of the second millennium. My kind of themes. But they lack polish, craft, focus, and emotional depth. Lyricist/lead vocalist Thom Yorke struggles to deliver the very creative melodies with confidence (especially on “Exit Music [For a Film]”, but much better on the more conventional “No Surprises”). However, the music itself is phenomenally creative and appealing, experimenting as it does with structure and sound, yet still remaining connected to 20th century sensibilities, chiefly by keeping the rhythm section steady. Bassist Colin Greenwood and drummer Philip Selway provide solid if not flashy foundations, while keyboards, synth, guitars, and well-placed strings fill the ears with polychromatic sounds and just the right amount of discord. “Fitter Happier” is a lovely little mockery of the self help industry, with more than a few chuckle-inducing gems. The song “No Surprises” (somewhat surprisingly) resonates in at least two 66-year-old ears, but let’s not get too personal. The cover art is a superlative example of successfully pairing a visual mood with a sonic mood. The album loses energy toward the end. I’m not sure it was a good choice to finish with the words “Hey man, slow down, slow down; Idiot, slow down, slow down”. Makes me want to take a nap or go grab a beer. But the overall effect of OK Computer is high creativity and musical excellence. Radiohead. Yes. I look forward to hearing more of their stuff. The Bends, In Rainbows, and Kid A remain for me on the 1001 Albums list. Stay tuned. 4/5

Super siistejä yksityiskohtia soundeissa käytännössä koko levyn läpi ja biisit rakentuu tyylikkäämmin kuin ehkä rockissa koskaan. Lyriikat myös natsaa tunnelmaan usein just eikä melkein. Täydellistä melankoliaa. Kai siinä ajatuksessa on perää, että tän levyn jälkeen rockilla ei oo ollut enää merkittävää kehityssuuntaa. Lähinnä pirstaloitunut genrerunkkailuksi yms. Ehkä ainakin viimeinen ilmiselvä mainstream rockin mestariteos.

On myönnettävä, että (kenties häpeäkseni) en oo ikinä jotenkin 100% tajunnu Radioheadia. Musta ne on aina olleet hyviä, mutta tuntuu että jotenkin pitäisi arvostaa mestariteoksina. Kiinnostava se on silti, 4/5. Muistaakseni tykkäsin Kid A:sta enemmän, katotaan mitä mieltä oon kun se tulee (kai sen on pakko olla listalla?).

19th March 2022 Started on the Friday but finished on Monday. Had mum and dad come to stay for the weekend, took sprout to get spayed, national gallery etc. One of the greats. Could have picked one of No Surprises, Karma Police, Exit Music for the playlist but went for Paranoid Android for the baseline. Unbelievable album, rewards consistent listening.

[Cracks knuckles in anticipation of a treatise on Radiohead...] This record rescued my musical tastes. I really believe that. I was riding the Smashing Pumpkins wave that crested in 1995-1997, which had rescued me from my early guitar bands boredom (no offense Nirvana and Bush). While most popular rock music just kept huffing its own fumes until Creed's Human Clay was shat upon the world's ears, Radiohead were getting weirder and better. It was phenomenally important for me to hear a NEW band with this sense of melody, technicality, and sense of adventure. It's the first band that was releasing music where I felt "in on it." Like, I was anticipating in real time what might happen next. Also, it can't be overstated how macho rock became in the late 90s. It felt dirty to me even if I wouldn't have articulated that. Thom Yorke and this band were so unconcerned about looking like ballsy rockers. I loved that. "Subterranean Homesick Alien" is one of the best pop/rock songs I've ever heard. Lyrically, musically. As with all my favorite bands, I can't pick a favorite record. But this one, "In Rainbows" and "Amnesiac" are all vying for the spot at the top of the list, for me. Until I got into Steely Dan, this record was my go-to "test the sound of the stereo/PA." Also, it was the first new music I had listened to since the late 80s that my dad and I really agreed on. He heard "Paranoid Android" and was really into that. It made me feel good to have that approval when we had been arguing about music more often than not for the few years before that. I'm sure he was relieved to hear this coming from my speakers rather than Tool.

Radiohead is cool. Too cool for me I think, but I get it now.

Proof that classic albums were not only made in the sixties and seventies. Still mind-blowing more than twenty years after its release.

Quite simply a masterpiece. Each song is a cinematic journey that delivers in every way possible. I used to think that The Bends is a better album, but that simply isn't true. It might be a more exciting listen, but can't equal the drama and quality of songwriting on OK Computer. 5 🌟

I am curious to hear what Radiohead has recorded, even if I don't always like everything they do. OK Computer is a good example. Most of the tracks are at least okay, but there are a few bits that might keep me from doing a full re-listen. My reluctance to Radiohead is in part related to some of the videos from this album (which were part of my initial introduction to the band). A couple tracks get too noisy for my enjoyment. "Let Down" was the track I liked the most, folowed by "Karma Police" and "Subterranean Homesick Alien".

Surprisingly (I say "surprisingly" because this isn't generally my genre of music), I REALLY enjoyed this album. I wouldn't say I would regularly listen to every single track but MOST of these hold up brilliantly. It's hard to explain but the vibe I got from this personally is that it's like if the Smiths and Coldplay had a baby? But like, in the BEST way. Really good album. Definitely deserves to be on this list. Fave track: Let Down. This whole album was magnificent at making me sad without me knowing why.

A mythical rock classic now, a bold experiment in sound and songwriting then. Really good songs is what makes it really work.

For me, it's one of the greatest albums ever recorded. This record has held a special place in my collection and my heart since I was given a copy on cassette in '97 (by my mate Ben, again!). The fact that people moan about Radiohead being whingers etc, etc, yawn, yawn, just makes me love them more. If my wife whinged like this I'd happily listen to her doing it all day long. Exit Music for Film will probably be played as my coffin trundles through those little red velvet curtains.

For years I didn't get this album, or Radiohead. Then one day I decided to listen to it properly on the train on the way to work. I realised I was utterly and completely wrong; OK Computer is one of the great albums. It's nice to be wrong.

Never been a huge Radiohead fan, but this album kind of slaps. Reminds me of Serial Experiments Lain in some ways.

Initially left no review for this LP, because what else is there to say that hasn't been said? After listening back for the recent run of live shows, all I have to add is how shockingly prescient this album was for its time. The ever-present sense of paranoia, technological skepticism, and (at times) hopelessness that defines the world of OK Computer is a dead-ringer for the 21st century outlook as our lives are fed into the woodchipper of capitalism and half-baked AI consumes entire livelihoods and the planet itself. Kudos to Thom and Co. for not only envisioning the future but turning it into one of the most haunting, beautiful albums of our time.

I mean literally one of the most important albums of my life. There's no functional way to be objective about this. Good album. Would obsess over again. A+

It's not often I give 5 stars to an album that I wasn't already intimately familiar with, but I have to make an exception in this case. I think the only reason I didn't listen to this more when it came out is that my friend Mark, whose taste in music I really respected, told me he didn't like Radiohead. Why did I listen to Mark? I knew in my gut that I liked Radiohead but I was easily influenced back then. Anyway, Radiohead might be a little pretentious (which I think is why Mark didn't like them) but even given that I think this is a brilliant album. The sound is amazing, and the songs are beautiful. Sonic bliss. So, 5 stars it is. Screw you, Mark.

There is nothing new to say about this album. Every track, save for Electioneering is perfect - and on any contemporary band's album, Electioneering would be the best track. It's worth getting the 20th anniversary reissue just for I Promise, which would possibly have made this album even better. I've listened to the entire hacked minidiscs of their demos for this. I'm not usually so obsessive, but this is 'the one'. If I had to rank the albums I've given five stars to, this would be in the top 5, duking it out with the Beatles, Wu Tang Clan, The Fall and David Bowie for number one. Listening back to it, Exit Music is standing out as a really beautiful thing. My favourite track changes every single time. Even Electioneering has made it twice (when I first bought the album when I was 13, and when I learned to play it when I was 35). I see in the reviews that some people have called it too depressing and rated it low. It's actually quite uplifting musically, and there's nowt wrong with a bit of misery from time to time, you wellness obsessed morons.

Aren't there more Bob Dylan albums you could have put here?

Um álbum por dia 2. OK Computer - Radiohead - 21/06/1997 Claustrophobic, paranoid, oblique and dystopian, a big fuck you to Britpop. In 1997 this sounded like the future to my 31 year old mind. I always was a pretentious little git.

Possibly my favorite album. Tied with in rainbows. Favorite band.

Karma police is a classic. I appreciate Radiohead. It’s a go to when I’m feeling in my feelings just a little somber for when I’m in a good mood

I'm not sure I fully "got" this album, I sort of felt like I was waiting for it to be "better," since it's so highly regarded. I weirdly feel like I would have liked it more if it didn't come with the reputation, and if it was like a Stereolab album or something.

Does it get any better than this ... ? What can I say about this album that hasn't already been said...? Well, I met my future wife picking up Ok Computer at Plan 9 records in RVA, that's what. Though I feel like I am not alone in this experience, it is a special album for me. Since meeting her I've been fitter, happier, more productive, not drinking too much. Like a cat tied to a stick, a pig in a cage on antibiotics. Coincidence? I think not. No alarms, and no surprises.

This will always be among my most favorite albums ever. There is so much classical foundation to this entire album. I love all the remakes that have been done of it (like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keDSxbwoiqs and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsDlH1lO2p4). I feel immersed every time I listen to it. There are some I like more than others, but overall it's a seminal album in my view. Let Down is probably my favorite...I love the build-up. Also, it is etched in my memory from their show at the old 9:30 Club where they played for this album's tour (1997?) and the lights and dry ice and the gigantic computers on set with the various equalizers going nuts at the climax of the song. I confess, my love for Radiohead took a decline after this album, for which I know I'm an outlier. Maybe I should renew my commitment to one of my favorite bands ever by revisiting them with a more mature (ha! OLDER, DEAFER) ear.

Six stars. A band evolving. Experimenting. Probing. Pushing the envelope. But still accessible. Emotional. Raw. Powerful. Nonsense, and also thought-provoking depth. At least when you can understand Thom Yorke. A voice that shouldn't work, but just does. And Jonny Greenwood's guitar work is amazing and stands out for not just it's skill but also how well it fits in with the experimentation around it.

OK Computer is only slightly, ever so slightly, below The Bends for me as it skews more experimental and electronic than it's predecessor. But it still contains a lot of the guitar that I love about the Bends with a more dystopian feel. I was reading old reviews of OK Computer and someone called it “body music that circumvents the head to reach the spirit.” That's a pretty apt description of what both The Bends and OK Computer mean to me. Radiohead is one of a handful of bands for which the lyrics are only very distantly important. For me, OK Computer is almost entirely about the feeling evoked rather than the poetry expressed.

Now this is a Radiohead album I can get behind. The subdued opening of Exit Music (For a Film) is a great passage that sucks the listener in with an overall benefit of psychologically amplifying the more intricate portions of the album. The computer voice on Fitter Happier is a well placed statement on mid-1990s technology. Computers are here…can do cool stuff… but primitive sounding. The overall sound is experimental and ambitious. It’s rock. It’s acoustic. It’s electronica. It’s intimate. It’s loud and distorted. It’s even got a guest appearance by Stephen Hawking. In summary it’s wonderfully eclectic. The last third of the album does feel like a downward trajectory musically for me, excepting No Surprises. I feel like giving bonus points for Subterranean Homesick Aliens referencing my boy Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues. I’m also tempted to give an extra star because “The album initiated a stylistic shift in British rock away from Britpop . . .” (Wikipedia), which is a benefit to all. However, no bonus stars given.

I've never quite gotten the hype of Radiohead. I feel like I need better speakers than the crappy laptop ones to really appreciate this, but here we are.

Radiohead is really great at (for example) saying, "We want to do a song that evokes Bitches Brew, but we want to make it our own," and then they execute it perfectly and it's super impressive, with thoughtful lyrics and everything. Occasionally, though, they forget to make the music enjoyable to listen to. That only happens a few times on this album, which is what makes it their best one. Also, they perfectly captured the 21st century zeitgeist in 1997. How? Best track: Paranoid Android

Here it is, the number one album of all time on RYM. I'm sorry, but it does not live up to the hype for me. I really enjoyed our previous Radiohead albums, The Bends and In Rainbows, but this one didn't really do it for me. It's certainly not bad, the music is good, it just didn't grab me in a way their other stuff has. I could sense a tad more genre exploration, and while I'll always commend that sort of thing, for me it just lacked the core that the other projects had. Of course, it's still enjoyable, but given the high praise for this (and my enjoyment of the other two we've had already), my expectations weren't met. Maybe it'll grow on me with time, but I'd honestly rather listen to the other two at this point. Favorite tracks: Airbag, Karma Police, Climbing Up the Walls, Electioneering. Album art: An inverted color picture of some highway and some other stuff. I looked it up and actually like this more with the actual colors, not inverted. Nitpicky, but yeah. I've seen this a billion times of course, but I don't think it's as iconic or impactful as The Bends or Kid A. 3.5/5

Hooray to my second favourite Radiohead album! I recall a time, during the later nineties, when this album was what you’d play in order to impress others by your sheer coolness.

In my review of "In Rainbows", I wrote that IR was my introduction to Radiohead. This album actually shook something loose in my brain, and reminded me I was familiar with (of all things) "Karma Police" prior to that record. I haven't listened to this album front-to-back in a minute, but it's still just as good. It's a grand shift from what Radiohead was (a decent alternative rock band) into what they would become. This album shows the beginning flirtations of their electronic side (which they'd get more into on their next record), while still being accessible enough for their older audience. It's impressive, in its scale. One of those records I feel like I could discuss with the right people for quite a while. Favorite tracks: "Karma Police", "Paranoid Android", "No Surprises", "Climbing Up the Walls"

Already know this one, but haven't listened to it in quite a while. It's not my #1 album from them but still great.

Vissa är riktigt ointressanta (Electioneering, Airbag). Andra har element i låtarna som inte funkar!!!! som drar dig ut ur känslan och vibben som solot i paranoid android eller refrängerna på subterranean homesick alien. De låtar som är bra är ändå superba.

Lol bro I don't care about this album. Like I feel guilty, like everyone has always swore how good and important this album is. And like I appreciate it for what it is, but I do not care about it at all. It's kind of boring and I hated a lot of the background noises.

This is THE Radiohead album for me. I remember buying it and bringing home to listen on CD. It was a very important album to my musical knowledge. Paranoid Android is one of my favorite songs ever, and I remember the music video vividly. However, Let Down is by far the best track on the album. I am not a major Radiohead fan, but this album is a wild exception. Just beautiful, inspiring, and fully realized. There's a little bloat/dead weight around the middle, but minor qualms with an otherwise, excellent record.

"Ok computer" is so much different than any other Radiohead album that I know. This kind of difference makes sense to how extent this album is famous and recognizes as a great one. It really is a great album besides any comparison with the rest of Radiohead discography.

There are times when I feel really sad and down, not for any particular reason, but simply because of how difficult the human experience is. This album fully encapsulates those feelings.

An exceptional album, pretty flawless. Artful arrangements + one of the most compelling vocalists ever to be recorded = Magic. Whatever else was happening musically in 1997 was pretty much reduced to rubble by this one. Quizá se oiga muy trillado pero en realidad creo que, cuando se ve como la experiencia completa de un album OK Computer es basicamente la vez que Radiohead realmente creó algo perfecto. No solamente hacia la banda, lo que representó sacar un disco de este tono cuando antes de él realmente su música era más catalogada al lado de cosas como Blur y Oasis, dando un giro tan dramático y creando algo que realmente iba más allá, también es un logro impresionante para todo el rock de los noventas. Cuando la mayoría del rock popular tenía que ser de sonido hacia el grunge, punk, sonidos crudos... sale un disco prístino, limpio, vívido, casi como una visión futurista del rock. Sin este disco muy probablemente no hay no hay cosas como Muse, los Killers o Coldplay (sí, incluso Coldplay, es un precio razonable a cambio de un disco tan bueno). Ese sonido prístino casi inmaculado y medio esteril es en mi opinión lo que lo hace perdurar y poder escucharlo hoy en día sonando relevante y nada viejo, no tiene nada que lo ancle a cierta moda x... sin saberlo de antemano es dificil decir de qué año es, simplemente no pasa de moda (en un sentido que me hace pensar incluso en cosas como The Wall... al tener una base tan sólida no necesita tantos adornos). La producción es brillante, rica en sonido, detallada, balanceada. El rango impresionante de emociones, sonidos, conceptos líricos cambiantes y siniestros, se toma su tiempo y cuando realmente golpea pega como camión (como el final de Exit Music por dar un ejemplo). Dramático, grande y con un concepto impecablemente realizado.

En general, no me gusta Radiohead. Una vez dicho esto, no hay forma de negar que éste es un gran disco. Atmosférico, a ratos pesado y con letras complicadas, no cabe duda que es su mejor disco. En esta ocasión pude soportar de mejor manera No Surprises, lo cual es sorprendente porque odio el video y hace que no me guste la canción. Let Down y Karma Police son las mejores. 4.5 que voy a bajar a 4 por ese maldito video y porque tampoco lo escucho seguido. Una vez cada 5-6 años es más que suficiente.

Es que no puedo con el cantadito chillón y tembloroso de este wey. El disco tiene para mí dos o tres grandes momentos (No Surprises y Electroengineering), pero 1) Son los momentos menos Radioheadezcos del disco 2) Suceden poco y de todas maneras hace su voz. De no ser por ello, estaría tentado a ir por las 5 estrellas.

What is all the fuss about? Very little on here stands out, even half of the singles are forgettable to me. Abrasive lullaby’s for the depressed. Too soporific to be exciting, too shrill to be relaxing. I had to go listen to The Bends to remind myself that Radiohead can write great songs. Fuck it, 2 stars.

This is the 14th album generated for me, and it's the first album where I've previously listened to the whole thing. I wouldn't consider myself to be a particular Radiohead fan, but I'm rating this 5 stars for quality and impact on modern music. It sounds surprisingly current (I felt super old when I realized that this album was released nearly 25 years ago!) and really captures the mood of our current dystopia.

Great album but not as good as The Bends

The greatest album of the 90s. This album not only represented a huge leap forward for Radiohead, but a huge leap forward for popular music in general. OK Computer saw Radiohead incorporating electronic sounds and effects while talking about themes of alienation and the rise of technology. The songs are incredibly well crafted and show such intentionality that it's hard to believe that Radiohead would continue to evolve beyond this album. It's as close to a perfect album as you can get.

For some reason I can't fully grasp, I have avoided listening to OK Computer ever since it came out 24 years ago. I suppose I could attribute it to hype aversion, that an album acclaimed so immediately must reflect journalists seeking unanimity for than anything. Therefore, in 1997 I bought The Prodigy's The Fat of the Land, mainly because everyone in school had also bought it. And yes, I did dismiss the critics as sheeplike whilst aping the behavior of everyone at the comp. So, has OK Computer aged well? (As to whether Fat of the Land has aged well, what do you expect from an album that quotes Goering's guns not butter speech?) One can detect the odd wrinkle and stretchmark. Firstly, the student politics of the album incite cringes rather than riots. I like to think that I am now of an age where I have a more considered view of the political landscape, and if you wish to criticise the IMF, I'd prefer your criticisms to be substantive and constructive. Still, one part of growing up is that you don't derive your politics from albums, so I can't slam Radiohead too much on that front. So what about the rest? Well, the music is fine, great in places, but I still rankle slightly at the constant need to allude to other music. I can't be the only one who doesn't want their albums reduced to a Where's Wally checklist, "Oh, just spotted Magazine, and that's Can, and that's Bitches Brew, and I think there's Edgard Varèse..." Sure, Radiohead are by no means the worst offenders from this era (Spiritualized and Primal Scream, obviously), but however much they wish to tip the titfer to their influences, it can detract as it can distract. This seems harsher than I intend it to be. OK Computer is a fine album, cohesive and biting. But the iciness can leave one cold, especially on the tips of one's ears. In short, OK Computer is... OK. I feel really pleased with myself for that last bit.

I'm convinced that 90% of Thom Yorke's music is in a 3/2 time signature. Rating: 4.2/5

Still holds up. This was on repeat in my life (like everyone else's) for quite a while, but I haven't heard it in probably 10 years now. It's not my favorite album of theirs, but not a bad way to spend a morning.

I always think of OK Computer as the Pulp Fiction of rock albums. It changed my idea of what a rock band could do. To be so creative, so immersive, so beautiful but still kick ass - definitely in my top 10 all time.

Still not really there for me. This is a band I've long wanted to really get into. On paper, as it were, they seem like the kind of artists I'd love. Hasn't happened yet. This album clicked with me a little better than the other one that came up on my rotation in this album generator, but I honestly can't remember much, if anything, about that other one. There are some really interesting moments on this album. I actually might come back to it -- might come back to their other works, too -- and give some more concentrated listening time to them.

And the start of some world domination *Oh ffs you’ve really blown the facade now dickhead. Arctic Monkeys? Christ Spotify’s all powerful algorithm moved on to In Rainbows, which (it turns out entirely predictably) was more my jam. Would listen again. Onto In Rainbows first though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A prophetic, innovative record that has stood the test of time 24 years later. The lyrics captures modern America's addiction to technology, consumerism, media consumption, and political scandals to a T. Between the bands variety of tones in their instruments, shocking reverb to barebones, the influx of strings, and the poignantly placed electro-techno samples, there is a ton of sounds to absorb from this record. This is bold, true Radiohead. You could listen to it 100 times and still discover something new, it never goes stale. It may be a little passé to hold this record in such high esteem on the internet, but it truly is one of the greatest to ever be made. I think it will only age better with time. Favorite Song: Paranoid Android Least Favorite: Climbing Up the Wall

It is impressive how Thom Yorke managed to out-depress the entirety of grunge. Honestly, I didn't even like this album much the first time I listened to it. Strange, despite it being a perfect mix of things I like: alternative rock veneer over progressive/artsy songwriting, disaffected lyrics, and dripping with pretentiousness. I came back to it after a few months and it completely clicked for me, and now I think it is an essential album to its core.

A bombastic wall of sound that needs to be consumed from an auditory squint, this album requires the right amount of abstraction and pull back to dive in deeply, but it does Play with some really fun things and manages to come across with a coherent theme.

If it weren't for Fitter Happier, this would probably be as close to a perfect album as there is. Climbing Up the Walls is so powerful, with amazing track after track.

Definitely conjures a time and place. I remember listening to this one on repeat. Holds up but maybe that's nostalgia speaking. There is a great mix by Roman GianArthur that I recommend wholeheartedly.

I was 10 when this album came out. I have very vivid memories of seeing clips of the Karma Police music video on MTV, but OK Computer was not coming anywhere near my 6-CD changer boombox. This particular prompt gave me a bit of anxiety because I feel like I'm supposed to like Radiohead but I was nervous that I would not have my mind blown by this album. And truth is, I didn't. I really wanted to enjoy OK Computer, but it had an alt rock moodiness that's just really not for Kelseys. It was reminiscent of Tool or Muse - bands that I acknowledge are musically talented but aren't doing anything that I personally enjoy. I will confess that I have a very low attention span for lyrics and need to be grabbed sonically before I can get into any deeper meaning behind the music - especially when lyrics are caged in metaphor and/or not clearly enunciated. For that reason (in addition to the knowledge that this album means a lot to many people who's opinion I respect), I'd be willing to give it another shot and spend more time trying to understand what makes it truly great. But as of now, it's not going on repeat for me.

I was pretty sure we would see Ok Computer on this list and I am so glad it came up this early. This record came out when I was 14, I loved it then and it remains as great as I remember. The album is one of the first I remember sitting down and poring over the liner notes trying to decipher every one of the lyrics. It was profound to me and extremely rewarding. This album spoke to a young me. -Self loathing and contempt for everyone else! -Aliens, robots and Blade Runner. -The power of nihilism. - Distrust and contempt for government. -An understanding that our collective goal is just to find a quiet hole to die in. Did I find an album that suited me perfectly or was I reborn as a manifestation of this record? Hard to say. What I can say for certain is it holds up and rocks as hard as anything this mopey possibly can.

I've always liked this album. It takes me back to high school; back when you'd still listen to an entire CD because you paid good money for it. Even now, I could have it on in the background and listen to it all without selecting just one track and moving on to something else. I remember that at the time it came out, it sounded different than a lot of other stuff on the radio, but now I notice that a lot of bands have since tried to emulate it. Twenty-plus years later, I think the album still stands up

Perfect one, amazing harmony, unforgettable music (just because it’s forgettable )) every melody is not like usual pop melodies, it’s always changing, it’s never the same, and it’s my favourite kind of music. But at the same time it’s not my “sense-of-the-world” album. But I believe him and I understand him and I love it

I don’t especially think of myself as a Radiohead fan, and I wouldn’t think to list them as one of my favourite bands, but several of their albums unquestionably deserve a 5 star rating, including this one. Exit Music stops me in my tracks every time.

Great album, really trippy. I particularly like Subterranean Homesick Alien, Karma Police, No Surprises, Lucky, although the quality is maintained throughout. Would I love this as much as I do, had I not heard it before? Not sure, but I do love it, so this is officially the first 5* album on this list for me (after 38 albums listened).

Cool and atmospheric. I felt it got a bit tiring towards the end but it's overall a nice experience. I listened to it while doing other stuff though, I think that for a more active listen you'd have to be already in the mood.

this was my first time hearing this entire album - in fact, it may've been my first time hearing any of the tracks from it at all. i do enjoy just how different they are from everything else going on around them.

I was pretty bored of the easy listening grunge this album presented, but it kicked into a more enjoyable tempo with Electioneering. oh no I spoke too soon easy listening grunge is back. The 2nd half of the album was more enjoyable than the first, maybe you just need to be in the right frame of mind for some of the softer spoken songs, but I think I prefer my anger to be a bit more upfront.

Airbag offers a good bridge from The Bends to OK Computer, but is often over looked during album listens for me because it is just a hurdle before Paranoid Android. About half way with Karma Police Radio head start taking a bit of a left turn and start heading in their future direction, once they got over the musical hissy fit that was Kid A. Still one of my all time favourite albums, and always will be.

Classic after classic on this album, and enough b-sides and bonus tracks to make another great album. The albums themes are still incredibly relevant today, which is a shame, but works in its favour.

great album that I own

I had listened to The Bends twice beforehand to really understand the transition, and damn there is such a huge gap. I listened to OK Computer three times yesterday. First was blind run, and immediately I noticed the differences, but I wasn't able to pick out the songs apart from some really cool parts. I also couldn't understand most of the lyrics. Second listen I followed the lyrics and music videos, reading what people thought of each song. Third was taking all this into account, now that I could anticipate each song. And yeah it was worth it, because this song has to be one of the most interesting albums I had ever listened to. I could relisten to it again and again and not get tired of it, which I definitely couldn't say about The Bends. After all this careful consideration, I completely agree with the critics, this is by far one of the best albums I had ever listened to and probably will ever listen to in my life. The more I listen, the more I appreciate each song. Each song is carefully crafted and relies on heavy ingenuity and inspiration from what legends such as the Brian Wilson, REM, and the Pixies had done in prior decades to take rock 10 steps further. The imagery was necessary for me to understand the themes and subject of these songs, due to their abstract lyrics and atmospheric sound. There is something to be said about every song. "Airbag" was a perfect start to set the expectations for the album, and the distortion of the drums and bass at the end made me realize this was an album of carefully crafted experimentation. "Paranoid Android" is an absolute masterpiece, and balls of Radiohead to make the 6.5 minute song their lead single. "Subterranean Homesick Alien" was the song that struck out to me the most my first listen due to the aquatic noises and easy-to-follow story about envisioning a flight with aliens. Certainly one of the most atmospheric songs. I could go on, but that won't be necessary. "Karma Police" and "No Surprises" are my other two favorites. This album comes at a time when they outcompeted a crowd of spectators, inspiring many of those spectators to stand up and model their work after Radiohead.

Had heard it before. It took a while to grow on me but now this is one of my favorite albums ever. Highly recommend anyone who hasn't heard it to try it out because if it ends up being for you, it will change your life and the way you see music.

It was not easy following up the guitar-centered, abstract, emotional, and cryptic masterpiece "The Bends", which was in its own right a level above the more repetitive grunge sound on what is widely considered to be Radiohead's worst record, "Pablo Honey". In my opinion, OK Computer is the album that has aged the best from any piece of music published in the 90's. The lyrics are extremely relevant, Thom Yorke's tenor is iconic, and it touches upon themes of media-obsession, paranoia and dystopian technology in a beautifully coherent way. I believe that when it was released it set a new gold standard for progressive/art rock that has only been met by a very select few projects these 2 decades. Overall score a perfect 5/5.

Solid background rock

Not their best but really good album with my favorite Radiohead song on it, "Let Down."

Overall seems calm with guitars every now and then disrupting the calmness. Genuinely liked and enjoyed it.

The album has a depressed/empty. I enjoyed it however I would have prefered it not to be so depressed/empty. I thought No Surprises created that feeling quite well. Fitter Happier was odd. So it isn't entirely unique in that regard but they are quite interesting and rather enjoyable.

First 2 songs are super cool. I love the distorted drums and bass in Airbag. Rest of the album was very interesting and even in the slower, more depressing songs I could always enjoy something about it. Quite a neat spacey style.

OK Computer - Radiohead 1. Airbag - Good opening, I enjoyed it! Although if I were to add this into a playlist this might be a filler rather than a song I would seek out and listen. 3.25/5 2. Paranoid Android - Was hesitant at first, but it gets good. The guitar is so fucking good and such a winner for me. I think I would seek out this song. 3.5/5 3. Subterranean Homesick Alien - Nice, real smooth. I would fall asleep to this or do some major relaxation here. I mean this song is about escaping the “uptight, uptight, uptight” human world on a UFO. 3.5/5 4. Exit Music (For A Film) - I would cry to this song. Oh yup, look at those lyrics. I would definitely cry to this. Ohh scratchy bass alert, that’s so hot. This song is hot. 4/5 5. Let Down - More cheerful. This is definitely a freedom type relaxation song and if you look at the lyrics it most definitely is. 2.5/5 6. Karma Police - Excited to hear this because it’s their second most popular song. I might be crazy but I thought it was alright. 3/5 7. Fitter Happier - A fitting intermission 2.5/5 8. Electioneering - OHH SICK ! Maybe I’m biased because this is more hype than the rest of the album and I’m just having a shock moment but I’m definitely enjoying this. It is one of Radiohead’s straightforward political songs so it’s no wonder it makes a statement. 4/5 9. Climbing Up These Walls - Gives me Deathconciousness by Have a Nice Life vibes. This is one of Radiohead’s scarier sounding songs, and that’s probably where I was so offset at the beginning. I think the vocals really sell me with this song. It’s reminding me soo much of Bloodhail by Have a Nice Life. 3.5/5 10. No Surprises - Aw man. I fw this song heavy. Very sweet sounding, the lyrics have great double meaning. Glad this is one of their most popular songs and it’s no surprise it is. 4.5/5 11. Lucky - A good song, nothing spectacular but I like the guitar again. 2.5/5 12. The Tourist - Another favourite. It’s being a tourist, duh. Lots of freedom, the rush of curiosity and excitement is felt. 4/5 Overall: 3.4/5 or 68% Fave Song: No Surprises Usually not my cup of tea but it was good. Although I think Radiohead is cool I’ve never actually sat down and listened to any of their music... besides Creep. This was a good way into it though.

I wish i could give this a 4.5 bc that would be the perfect score. I liked that the songs didn't sound all the same and they had distinctive different moods. I think Exit Music is a masterpiece

Not my cup of tea

A happy revisit to the legendary OK Computer, to think that this album is from 1997 is insane to me.

Heavy emotional bagage connected to this, too much for an unbiased listen. It's been at least 20 years. No question it's a great album but also the point after which I lost interest in the band. Still know I will enjoy this, reluctantly. Although, Paranoid Android does slap. Oh, and Lucky.

Заслуги rh в музыкальной индустрии лично для меня крайне значительны, поэтому такой важный альбом в их творческом пути для меня всегда стоит особняком. I actually rated Rainbows by Radiohead a 2 previously - but thought OK Computer was fantastic. I really enjoyed it and thought to myself I should listen to more Radiohead - until I remembered I might have already listened to one of their albums from this list and saw that I didn't like that one at all. Still, this was good enough to make it work giving some others of their older albums a try, even if I don't seem to be a fan of their 'newer' albums. My favorite tracks were Karma Police, Subterranean Homesick Alien and The Tourist. The only one I disliked was Paranoid Android.

controversially as a radiohead fan this is one of my least favourite albums of theirs. there are some huge tracks on it and it is their first steps into producing truly unique music, but i would much rather listen to any of the albums that came after it.

OK Computer is one of those rare albums that actually deserves the praise lavished on it. Where to even start? How about the astonishingly layered arrangement of Airbag, the opening tune? Yes, it's guitar based, but there's snatches of electronica, electronic percussion alongside live drums, a cello, and I could go on and on. You could listen to this track a dozen times and hear something new every time. Compositionally, these songs are as strong as they get, which explains why they've been covered by the likes of Brad Melhdau. Take Paranoid Android, a multipart suite with odd meter changes, but which nonetheless rocks like a mother. And unlike many other bands, Radiohead doesn't get any less interesting when they slow down and do a ballad like the gorgeous No Surprises. On OK Computer, Radiohead makes most bands sound like hacks or toddlers, and that goes for most of the bands that have followed in their footsteps. If I had been in a rock band at the time, it probably would have made me throw up my hands in despair. An easy 5 out of 5.

Best so far...although it’s not the Bends, it was the “best album ever” in its time. Good old Oxford (Abingdon) band.

I was watching a BBC4 documentary about duck rustling in the 13th century at the weekend and it blew my mind. This album has a similar effect. The unreachable ambition shown by both Radiohead is reminiscent of the infamous duck rustlers and really comes to the fore on 'Fitter Happier'. A loveable, adventurous romp, with charming pond dwelling creatures. I was on the edge of my seat throughout.

You're very brave to be recommending this album to me, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die; Did you know that? I suppose you have to list the obvious albums, but little did I know we'd be here. For the uninitiated, almost everything we owe alternative rock in the 21st century can be traced back to this album along with a good chunk of Radiohead's discography as a whole. They are simply too important not to have on this list. It's so glaringly unlike anything else before it, with it's songwriting and production and little flairs that make it memorable. The pacing is perfect, making for an effortless listen. It is Radiohead's magnum opus, and they've still got a few albums in the pipe that come really close. I find it hard to talk about individual songs because it's all so great, but I'll attempt: Paranoid Android is this fantastic piece of art rock with multiple movements to tell a larger story and give us a truly wired experience for the rest of the album. Karma Police is the climatic down-beat song right before the interlude that gets us a little moody. See what I meant about pacing earlier? This is followed by a back half that goes through a different set of experiences and it ends on such a wonderful strong note. Yeah, this album is good :)

We're supposed to all agree that this is perfect, aren't we? It was the first of the 'groundbreaking' Radiohead albums after their early indie efforts. Exit Music is my favourite Radiohead song. Still think The Bends is better though.

Claustrophobic, paranoid, oblique and dystopian, a big fuck you to Britpop. In 1997 this sounded like the future to my tiny little 13 year old mind. I always was a pretentious little git.
