She has an amazing voice and doesn't get enough credit.
First album I’m listening to for this challenge! Off to a pretty great start with this album. Dusty’s vocals are so incredible, and really enhance each song. The album is quick and even the songs I didn’t care for that much were still tolerable. Would recommend! Highlights: Son of a Preacher Man, The Windmills of Your Mind
Smooth, pleasant. Enjoyed very much.
This is adult contemporary pop music at its best. Beautiful songs and a beautiful voice. Son of a Preacher Man is an all time classic. 4.5 🌟
Solid
Muito bom.
The White Queen Of Soul. Really a 60's "white" Soul Album. (7/10) FT: Just a Little Lovin, Son of a Preacher Man
Great sounds that you can lose yourself in and out of. Songs tend to blur together a bit
04/04/2022 Great voice! Better than "A Girl Called Dusty" and full of power!
Just a Little Lovin'' o 'The Windmills of Your Mind'
Pop-soul. Un megahit. Venga, un 4.
Forgive me music gods, I previously thought Dusty was a man, just from hearing the name here and there. Glad I heard this, these songs hit like a breezy summer Sunday morning.
She got pipes. Son of a preacher will forever rang out very loud in my house.
Yes. It probably is Dusty in Memphis. I blame the pyramids. That said she sings like a warm cuddle.
Late 60's. Blue-eyed soul. Easy listening pop/rock. Really lovely voice. Makes me feel like I should be sipping fancy drinks in a classy lounge somewhere.
Honestly, giving this 4 stars on the strength of "Son of a Preacher Man" alone. This version is so fucking good.
Son of a Preacher Man. Good song!
Really good! Generally not my thing, but Dusty killed it with this one. Lyrics are powerful, melodies are catchy. Loved it.
Preacher man is a top tune. Some good stuff
Unexpectedly, I actually really enjoyed this album. It has good vocals and strong musical melodies. My favourite track is probably, 'Son of a preacher man'. While not a very unique opinion it is a brilliant song that is catchy and enjoyable. This album has led me into listening to more of Dusty's music which I had never properly listened to. So as an album, it has delivered everything it needed to.
3rd listen. Really good album. For me it has improved each time I have heard it. It has gone from 2 to 3 stars and now I'm leaning towards 4/5 stars. At least half of the songs really shine. Standouts: Son of a Preacher Man, Breakfast in Bed, The Windmills of Your Mind, No Easy Way Down. 4/5
Almost every song is a banger.
Epic ftw
Slatt
Come to Brazil pls
Yah
A '60s pop album with orchestra instrumentals and classic soul-ish vocals. Definitely dusty. But not without pleasant surprises. I enjoyed this thirty minute jam, despite the 60 year old dusts. While it isn't the finest wine around, it still aged like one.
faster pace then her other album which is good
i really liked this one
Sultry country blues torch singing
Son of a Preacher Man is a good enough song that this album could get 4 stars based just on that. The fact that the whole album maintains that same vibe and that there are a few other good songs here (like No Easy Way Down) makes it a solid 4 for me.
How to fairly review this? Everything is perfectly listenable, so begin at three stars. Some of the arrangements are really soupy - minus one. Plus one for Dusty's voice - she could sing my car insurance policy to me. And add one for the combined effort of 'Son of a Preacher Man' and 'Windmills of Your Mind'? Four stars seems about right. Not huge on torch songs, but this is about as good as they get.
Love it. "Breakfast in Bed," are you kidding me? Such a good tune. Suck it, Adele.
Son of a preacher man = Klassiker :D mochte ich mehr, als ich gedacht hätte
Can't complain about Dusty's vocals, truely excellent. The music backing it is pretty nice too, suits her voice perfectly. The songs themselves were good, though for some reason I couldn't get into Son of a Preacher Man. Prefered Windmills In Your Mind, Don't Forget About Me and So Much More to one of her biggest hits.
uh this album was really fun. Son of a Preacher Man is just hella catchy. and there were some other fun ones. in the land of make believe was great. i think the heartfelt tone / old timeish feel is good background music for me?
White Memphis soul. Some classics, but a little too heavy on the syrupy strings.
Ist das Country?
This is a set of songs carefully selected to highlight the singing talent. The production is excellent and it delivers. It warrants a complete listen each time rather than picking out individual tracks.
Tres nice. Camsonne vraiment bien j’ai adore. 4.75.
She has a nice voice. Reminds me of Karen Carpenter in some of her style. There is a good variety of songs as well, most of which suit her voice.
Easy listening
she can really sing, some good songs on there, hadn't heard her windmills of your mind before - awesome
Good album, beautiful vocals
Good blue eyed soul. Dusty Springfield gives some classic performances on this record that highlight her incredible voice. I find the influence of black music very interesting especially when one thinks about how it is repackaged for popular consumption.
More wonderful soul. Love to hear it
Nice
nice
Son Of A Preacher 10/10 Ellers fint album med mange rolige sanger, gode tekster. Give me breakfast in bed baby.
Son of a preacher man was my favorite off this album. The album also opens with a song about how everyone should have a little lovin’ in the morning. Nice easy listen
Great album. Note to revisit.
Wow! How have I missed listening to Dusty Springfield properly before. Her voice is amazing. The arrangements and melodies aren't my favourite kind of soul, but it's great to listen to nonetheless.
Son of a Preacher Man is one of the best songs of the sixties, rest of the album is solid, very solid.
This is actually a great album.
Son of a preacher man
Real smooth and soulful pop music.
However, the album's best-known track, "Son of a Preacher Man", was not among these, and was originally written with the idea of submitting it to Aretha Franklin. (Franklin cut her own version of the song in 1969 after Springfield's single reached the #10 position in the Billboard Hot 100.) The recording was a challenge for Wexler. In his book Rhythm and the Blues, Wexler wrote that out of all the songs that were initially submitted to Springfield for consideration, "she approved exactly zero." For her, he continued, "to say yes to one song was seen as a lifetime commitment."[9] Springfield disputed this, saying she did choose two: "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Just a Little Lovin'".[10] He was surprised, given Dusty's talent, by her apparent insecurity. Springfield later attributed her initial unease to a very real anxiety about being compared with the soul greats who had recorded in the same studios. Eventually Dusty's final vocals were recorded in New York.[11] Additionally, Springfield stated that she had never before worked with just a rhythm track, and that it was the first time she had worked with outside producers, having self-produced her previous recordings (something for which she never took credit). During the Memphis sessions in November 1968, Springfield suggested to the heads of Atlantic Records that they should sign the newly formed Led Zeppelin group. She knew the band's bass player John Paul Jones, who had backed her in concerts before. Without having ever seen them and largely on Dusty's advice,[12] the record company signed the group with a $143,000 advance. (Mick Wall (2005). "No Way Out": 83.) Despite modest sales, it was the first of a small wave of "in Memphis"-style albums that were recorded by pop singers at American Recording Studios.
Favourite Tracks: So Much Love, Son of a Preacher Man, Don't Forget About Me, Breakfast in Bed. The backing singers Sweet Inspirations really help to elevate the songs (shout out to Whitney Houston's mum!)
Chill/relaxing vibe. Great vocals and instrument delivery.
This is adult contemporary pop music at its best. Beautiful songs and a beautiful voice 4.5 🌟
Without a doubt the greatest blue-eyed soul album pf the 20th century. This album is nothing like her pop hits of her prior years (except maybe this album's "The Windmills of Your Mind"), and I'd say she mastered the Memphis sound very quickly. There are lines building up that I would fear to be hard to listen to, but Dusty pulls them off in a soothing manner. The voice is the highlight for me, but the strings are beautifully arranged, and I also love the horn interjections. "Son of a Preacher Son" is the classic, and I now appreciate it much more now that I'm able to listen to it closely and it context with the rest of the album. The orchestra of "The Windmills of Your Mind" is unbelievably impressive (but does not fit in well). Favorite Songs: "Just a Little Lovin", "Son of a Preacher Man", "Breakfast in Bed", "No Easy Way Down"
Pretty good
Levyn alku lähti mukavan viipyilevästi unisissa aamutunnelmissa, mutta livahti sitten vähän enemmän sellaiseen iskelmään. Hittinä tietysti Son of a Preacherman. Dustyn ääni oli ehkä miksattu vähän liian hiljaiselle, minun mielestäni sitä olisi kannattanut korostaa vähän enemmän. Hyvää kamaa silti, aika vahvaa laulua valkoiselta naiselta.
Mooi, rustig album.
mmmmmm some good vibes on this!
Folksy and smooth, but I did think to myself that my mom probably jammed out to this album during her first breakup. Haha. Very much sad girl love songs.

MotA: Son of a Preacher Man "Just a little lovin' early in the morning / Beats a cup of coffee for starting off the day"

What a voice
Very nice album with alot of good songs, the singer has a very good voice and the melodies are very calming and bring a jazzy feeling to each song. The most popular song is Son Of A Preacher Man and not without reason, it is a very nice song, but my favorite has to be So Much Love. Overall very nice to listen to. 9/10
Classic crooner.
I'm giving this album solely because it was a pleasant surprise to hear Son of a Preacher Man! I never bothered to find out who sang the song. #PulpFictionFan
Very nice
Soulful and romantic.
Liked the soul tunes, juxtaposition with more jazzy chord changes & melodies. Loved Don't Want to Hear it Anymore, opening track. Preacher Man is timeless.
A gentle easy listening album of country and Americana standby's. In the Deluxe Edition, it is easy to feel as if you are at an old show.
Actually good lol
Masterful crescendos throughout the album. Doesn't even include my favourite Dusty song, but it's a ripper of an album.
Good end-to-end. Son of a preacher man. Listened twice and would listen again.
Dusty's in Motown. Dusty's in Manhattan. I don't know much about Dusty. More familiar with her brother Buffalo. But one thing I know is she's English. With a name like Dusty, it was her destiny to take a trip to America and cut a soul record in the south. This album really knocked it out for me. Some beautiful chord progressions. Tons of expression and range in her voice. I bet the studio musicians are a bunch of hired guns that have a power name like the Wrecking Crew or Muscle Shoals. I love when they go double time in "I Can't Make it Alone". Why wasn't this album huge? Maybe America had moved on from blue-eyed soul at this point and on to the Eagles? A great discovery in 2021. A
Hadn't listened to much Dusty before other than the uniquitous son of a preacher man. The album is much more soulful and R&B than I expected. Some great builds and swells. "Don't forget about me" has some fun little wiggling keys. Love the build-up on "Breakfast in Bed". Sounds like great energy for a great day. "Windmills of your Mind", suddenly bossa nova, where did that come from? Don't mind it though, kind of a nice change up. Ohh picking up some energy now toward the end of the track. Much more well-rounded of an album that I was expecting. Some interesting detours.
A very nice listen. Dusty has a graceful voice that's always appreciated. The album is at it's best when the songs find footing to elevate Dusty's voice, like in Windmills of Your Mind and Son of a Preacher Man. If I didn't know any better, I'd think Windmills was a James Bond song. Overall a treat.
Son of a Preacher Man is great, but most of the other songs weren't my thing. Rated 4/5 because I can tell she's very talented, just not my genre!
Heerlijk wat een mooie nummers. Scherpe songteksten, ik moest regelmatig gniffelen..
Dusty is a very Memphis name for a girl from Camden isn't it? Epic Spector-esque strings. The sort of music Sean Connery's Bond would stick on on a Sunday afternoon if he ever got a day off. Which he obviously doesn't because he's James Bond.
Suppose
soulful easy listening orchestral oldie vibes. Infinite nostalgia and feels
Obviously son of a preacher man is one of the best songs ever created, but also many other dreamy lyrics expertly delivered. No wonder they call her dusty this album is from 1969.
surprisingly good!
Very nice, and it was a joy to listen to Son of a preacher man properly again, superb song.
Loved it
Lovely stuff
A moving, talented singer and series of performances. First three - through Son of a Preacher Man - are all top notch.
the windmills of your mind is a great tune, son of a preacher man is good
Surprisingly a mellow listen. Old school with the great female solo acts.
A surprisingly excellent album. Amazing vocals and accompaniments.
Quizá entre mis preferidas estén "So Much Love", "Son of a Preacher Man" y "The Windmills of Your Mind". Mucha balada, pero la instrumentación on point. 8/10
Very smooth and easy to listen to with many tuneful & eddying flips. Rusted on classics such as Preacher Man & Windmills are great.
Beautiful album, one of those important works that you know are lingering around but never actually get to listen, until you do.
Good record, fantastic artist. Son of a Preacher Man is an all-time favorite song.
The only Chole that could ever teach me..
Not too bad
What a great voice!
Classic rock is classic.
Classic R&B
Some of the songs were lovely, but it felt like a glance back in time. Such warmth!
Somehow so dumb I never realized Dusty Springfield was English. Son of a Preacher Man ha e a special place in my heart for obvious reasons.
Nice album. The first part touched me more than the last tracks. Not a vinyl buy, but a very good album.
Voz suave com alguns clássicos, sempre me agrada.
Pretty good, like her voice, some real classics on here
Good album, peaceful evening music.
That was lovely and excellent. Grew up in High Wycombe. Who knew?!
Not my favorite genre, but she's amazing. Should be 4.5 stars.
Really enjoyed it, would listen again for sure. Very polished, worth the listen.
70'er film musik
liked it
Beautiful voice
Haven’t finished it yet- but wow what a voice.
Really good thanks dolly parton
0002 - Good album for a weekend afternoon chilling at home
false
En klassiker med hittet fra Pulp fiction, Son of a preacherman Fint album med flere lækre numre på.
Good stuff
Found a song that was sampled in a few hip hop songs: Son of a Preacher Man. It was a different sound for me. The sounds were very relaxing.
fun, some iconic songs, amazing vocals from dusty, great bombastic instrumentals
okay
Basically enjoyable, but I can't see myself coming back to it anytime soon. Not really my kind of music. Nothing utterly abysmal, and lots of fun moments, just not for me Windmills in Your Mind though... doesn't quite bump the album up a star on it's own, but the whole thing kinda got more enjoyable after that.
Too slow for me. Maybe later
What a voice!
3,5 - 4. Bell’album, bella voce, bella atmosfera Forse canzone preferita the windmills of your mind, ma ce ne sono varie belle
Molto carino e poi son of a preavher man hit
I don’t have a lot to say about the album because it, as a whole, didn’t make much impression of me. Solid B+. But I will take a moment to discuss the synergistic relationship between film and music. Before 1994, no one I knew had ever heard the song Son of a Preacher Man. Then Pulp Fiction exposes a whole new generation to nuggets like this one perfectly arranged to accompany Tarantino’s undisputed masterpiece. Since then the song has become emblematic of dangerous romance and I give a lot of credit for this to its use in the movie. However listening to it on its own devoid of the visuals I was struck by the fact that the song was already its own masterpiece of forbidden love. Its use in the movie to usher in the sequence where Vincent Vega finds himself attracted to his boss’s wife is sublime foreboding. Another incredibly on point choice by the auteur. Another delicious bit of irony to layer onto a classically ironic hit.
A pretty decent record. Good, well arranged songs. Would probably listen again.
Excellent early 70's music. Very well done and beautiful at times.
pretty nice album, though less the style i enjoy. 6/10
Really lovely album. Nice voice, chilled songs and a banger in Son Of A Preacher Man.
So much love
What an absolutely lovely voice. There’s a depth to her tone that really helped me to connect. Son of a Preacher Man
I do love dusty
Myspys
TIL white soul is a genre. Beautiful vocals. But except for that one song, most songs feel "derived"
Son of a Preacher Man and ten other songs
Has that song from Pulp Fiction!
Not much to say on this one, a solid album and listen. Nothing popped out but nothing was bad
It was relaxing. I liked when it had the violins part in it idk the actual name of the piece tho
🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑 (rounded up because I liked her voice) What am I missing here? I chose to listen to this one because I'd heard "Son of a Preacher Man" before (and, unwittingly, the Mel Tormé cover of "Windmills of your Mind"), but it turns out that was sort of the one "big" song on an otherwise silky, lush record. Neither of those things are bad, though I found them to be a bit played out by the end. This isn't the first time I've really wanted to like this era of Soul, but it just feels a bit too cheesy for me after a while—the luster wears off so fast because, I think, it's one-dimensional, but I'm sure they'd have my head for that. Like I said, Dusty Springfield herself has a great persona, and the strings are too nice overall for me to rate this as anything below 2.5 stars, but it just didn't do a lot for me. Considering how much this album seems to mean for so many people, I wish it did more. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing
This was fine, nothing earth shattering.
Son of A Preacher Man is a jam. Nice voice on this broad.
3.25/5 When I first saw the cover, my expecations were very different that what I heard. Dusty Springfield has a beautiful soulful and emotive voice. I knew nothing about her before, so I did not expect a soul album. Personally, I got a little board in the middle section of the album because the songs felt predictable and nothing I haven't heard from this type of music. I've heard "Son Of A Preacher" man and that song is a highlight on the album. Just a Little Lovin' is a nice first track. The standout track for me was "The Windmills of Your Mind" becuase it felt so different from the rest of the songs and had some intresting instrumentation and is a beatiful song. I learned that this song was a cover but still love this version. "In The Land of Make Believe" was also a song I really liked. The title alone is intruiging and the groove in this song is really nice.
Gonna say I think I like this one more than A Girl Called Dusty. Son of a Preacher Man is of course a classic, but there is some other good stuff too as well as some good guitar work on some of the songs.
A few standouts among mostly decent songs sung by one of the best voices in popular music.
Great voice. She’s a legend
It was fine.
Stunning White RnB of the 60s
Sweet and soft
Really good, second half a bit lacking.
OK this is a memory unlocked album. I saw it pop up this morning and went, "I know the name but that's it." I know this album. It holds up too. Her voice is nice the music fits and doesn't overpower things, the lyrics work. It's a beautiful time capsule of the genre and time.
I wish I had windmills in my mind
album #67 this helped me learn more about dusty Springfield; i didn't know she was english, nor did i know she was gay. gotta love the representation, hell yeah ms. dusty! anyways, you can tell she had fun making this album which i appreciate and i enjoy the cosiness of it! the B-sides let it down more, though. ꩜ average track rating: 2.5/5 ꩜ favourite track(s): son of a preacher man (4★), don't forget about me (4★) ꩜ least favourite track(s): in the land of make believe (1★) ꩜ album rating: ★★⯪☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,022 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 33 (+1 Dusty in Memphis) ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 13 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 54
Good ol Dusty
dusty's back baby. lovely little album, very transportive. Son of a Preacher Man is such an obvious hit, The Windmills of Your Mind might edge out the favorite spot though. strong 3
Rating: 6/10 Fine. Well sung cover album. I like it better than the other Dusty which felt more old timey but I'm still not exactly reaching for it. It would be good mixed in some background easy listening speaker music and that's about it for me
It felt like a collection of greatest hits but what a voice.
"Dusty in Memphis" is a very 60s soul-pop record, complete with backing strings, love songs and dreamy vocals. It is an easy-listening album, with some nice guitar parts as well, but not particularly great.
ok thought i would not like this album because... i thought it was going to be sweet caroline vibes. no! great surprise. read a comment that said she's got great vocal phrasing (i.e., not over singing, pace great, just natural) and i've got to agree. she never sounds strained. i like just a little lovin' and don't want to hear it anymore the most.
In the most positive was I can say this, this album was exactly as I expected. Just a little loving was very flowing, very pretty. So much love had some lovely strings to it. Her voice just carries the music. I liked how tracks like Don’t Forget about me brought up the tempo a bit, but still kept the overall vibe of the album. Breakfast in bed had fantastic horns, and it all came together beautifully. Even though it was one of the longer tracks, I absolutely loved Windmills of the Mind. The way it ebbed and flowed and played with tempo was awesome. No way down almost felt like a lullaby to me and I can’t make it alone was a nice closer. Overall, a very nice little album. Nothing overly special but I enjoyed it. 3.5/5 ⭐️ 144/1089
She can certainly sing! Very much of its time. Good.
warm, tender, sensual blue-eyed soul. it's beautiful but not really for me
The bulk of the album is sultry, 60's pop goodness. By the last track I was Wishin', Hopin', and Prayin' the album was done.
Excellent
2,5/5
Drums isolated to right is odd I'm not used to it. 1- Good, I like the message and the strings add alot to the atmosphere. 2- Vocals soud interesting, far away and echoes 3- Oh I know this song, catchy guitar at the start 4/5- nothing special for me 8 - cool sounds in combination 9 - "in the land of make believe" beautiful lyrics beautiful
It was alright
pretty solid album. not my fav cover of “Son of a Preacher Man”
Solid
Really enjoyable blue eyed soul, with a number of great tracks. Not iconic for me though.
You dont have to say you love me... ma nejaky bangry, nejak me to neoslovilo
Quality 60s soul-pop performed by a quality singer, with a quality band and quality arrangements. Her vocal tone is perfect for the songs and message she’s sending. Enjoyable overall, but something that I’m unlikely to reach for with any regularity. And the Buffalo Sabres lost in OT in Game 7 of the 2nd round of playoffs after a 14 year playoff drought last night, so I refuse to reconsider.
Good but didn’t stay with me
She has a wonderful voice and Son of a Preacher Man is a classic. I’d happily listen again but I doubt I would actively seek to do so, I’d be more inclined to listen to some of the hits which I hear from time to time anyway.
Here we go again, lekker middle of the road, niet bijster goed, niet bijster slecht
Voor het overgrote deel, helaas, oersaaie soul. Het is dat Son Of A Preacher Man een tijdloze megahit is en ik Breakfast in Bed heel mooi vond, waardoor ik toch een krappe voldoende geef.
I guess OK
I liked some of these, old classic tune in son of a preacher man
Solid album.
Finally an album where I actually felt as though I was back in time and among the elite! Vocally absolutely on point. However the hard changes between tracks made the album not flow (I know sign of the times) and at times the album didn’t resonate with me and there was a notable difference between some of the stronger tracks and the rest of the album. Easy quick fire listening however but unfortunately not one I’ll think oh I need to go listen to Dusty. Favourite track- ‘son of a preacher man’ Worst track- ‘no easy way down’ 7/10
Done and dusted
I mean yes, this is a classic record, that deserves to be ranked highly for Son or a Preacher Man alone. This is dusty getting the same Muscle Sholes make over that Areatha got with Atlantic Records sent her down South. But as much as I love the arrangements, it doesn't touch Franklins I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, and or anything that really came out of Memphis on Stax Records from this era.
Typical Dusty. Grew up with her music in the charts regularly. Easy listening but not my go to singer. Not really for me.
Some great tracks but overall not really my sort of thing - she has a great voice but the music lacks something.
Great voice and vibe ~
Beautiful, powerful female vocals. Album was really easy to listen to but why did all these artists in the 70’s add cover songs to their albums? Just stand on your own legs, Dusty
I think Dusty has a great voice and son of a preacher man is a classic and love to listen (also one of the best sample uses by cypress hill). I don’t think however it’s fair to say that this is a classic album when all the songs where written by others, and a few songs don’t really have the staying power as others
Love her voice
***A good easy listening album
Very nice to listen to. Nothing to add really, atmospheric as hell.
It plays like the 60s went on forever. They didn't. They barely happened. Dusty knew.
This started out pretty good but maybe not memorable enough besides a couple of standout tracks.
Dusty Springfield sounds like a quaint town description. Son of a Preacher man was the only recognizable song and I think the best. The other songs were good but not as catchy. 6/10
solidno, ali ništa posebno sve u svemu, lijepa trojčica
Pretty good.
I wanted to like this more than I did. Don't get me wrong, it's well done. I can see why people dig it. But it was a tad too muzaky for my tastes. She's cool, though.
It's ok. Son of a preacher man obviously the stand out. I found the rest quite forgettable but it's not really my thing
Old-school R&B...as old as I am, in fact. "Son of a Preacher Man" is a classic, but the rest of the songs are nothing particularly memorable. "Windmills of Your Mind" is a wonderfully weird song, but I'm partial to the Mel Tormé version. This album is fine, with smooth vocals and a tight backing band, but not something I'll particularly seek out.
This album and Dusty were underrated at the time. Both were very good.
That was fine I guess
Some nice songs and obviously Dusty has a great voice. I could have done without the over-the-top string arrangements on some of the numbers. A sign of the times I guess but for me it makes the songs feel dated and very old fashioned.
Liked but didn’t love. Spotify continued to play some of her other stuff which does more for me. Son of a Preacher Man still an absolute banger. Fav tracks: Son of a Preacher Man Saved a song: N RYM: N
Son of a Preacher Man is a great song. I discovered the song via Pulp Fiction and it was later in a karaoke game I had. What a classic. Even though that's definitely the stand out song the rest of the album was pretty good. I didn't know Dusty had a range and the album did a great job of showcasing what her vocals can do.
Apparently, Dusty Springfield was an icon of the swinging 60s. This is my second album of hers on the list and I think probably the better of the two. Dusty in Menphis is perfectly fine 60s pop album. The orchestrations were a bit cheesy and are often overly emphasized in production. The backing music on the funkier tunes (Son of a Preacher Man, Don’t Forget About Me) was much better and saved the record for me. Instrumentation aside, Springfield is an amazing singer. She has a beautiful, often sexy voice. Her unique phrasing makes her stand out among other soul singers. I just wish I appreciated the production choices because I could listen to this woman sing all day long.
Decent
Dusty´s voice is inobjectable. You can feel that late 60´s in every track, i loved that in this album. anyways i think is not her best album, i preffer the 1968 "dusty... definitely" 3 out of 5 for me.
DNF - I still love Son Of A Preacherman but I couldn’t get into the rest of the album
No doubting the vocal talent here, but all a bit schmaltzy for me. Windmills in Your Mind and Son of a Preacher Man are the standout tracks. The rest, pleasant but forgettable.
Son of a Preacher Man is an ALL TIME single - but the rest of the album is so filled with schmaltz it cant overtake the incredible session musicians. Windmills of your mind is a wonderful cover but its so hard to overcome the rest of the album.
definition of mid
Not terrible
Très bon album. Il s’écoute bien en fond. Le classique Son of a Preacher man, indémodable.
The first two tracks of this are so tiresome and derivative that they made me reconsider whether Son of a Preacher Man was worse than I remembered. But it improves somewhat after that, with a bit of funk & Dusty's lovely voice allowing a few tracks to escape the turgid gravity of the big band backing.
Dusty Memphis was a phenomenal singer, the songwriting leaves something to be desired though. I would put 2 stars, but Son of a Preacher Man is so good it bumps the whole album up a star.
- dusty springfield i was not familiar with your game - 60s soul instrumentation you have bewitched me - favorites: the windmills of your mind
whoa a birthday album whewww that voice highlights: son of a preacher man, i don't want to hear it anymore 3.5/5
Only one banger, the rest is non enthusiastic, but ok
Not really my cup of tea. Some lyrics interesting, obviously Son of a Preacher Man is a banger, but musically not in love.
Me gusto
Breathy and full of life. She's got one of those ethereal voices that lingers
Good stuff on there
Really enjoyed this. For some reason I was expecting it to be full on Country, so I was pleasantly surprised. Accomplished and very enjoyable.
Stunning voice.
She's got a nice voice, but I feel like it doesn't hit the same cause she doesn't write any of her own stuff. Like I don't even think all of these are covers, I think she just had a team of writers. And like it's still good but it kinda rings hollow cause she didn't actually go through that, her team did. It was still a passable listen for my morning though, I didn't mind it. Favorites: Son of a Preacher Man, I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore, The Windmills of Your Mind
Some classic blue-eyed soul sound here. It’s clear much of Amy Winehouse’s inspiration comes from Dusty. Obviously, “Son of a Preacher Man”’is an all-time classic. It’s *almost* a 4, save for some dated production. This would still be great thrown on for a chill dinner party.
I love Son of a Preacher Man with my whole heart but the rest of the songs just aren't it
not my kind of music but enjoyable. Son of a preacher man is obviously a banger
I just know she was an industry plant!!! A British lady tapping into the styling of black artists is a bit fishy!!! With that being said, there are some good songs, i would say two felt like they were genuine to dusty herself, the rest felt like a cosplay of American-Southern-Blackness.
It's all good, but it's just not really my thing
*Great recording and set list, just not my favorite type of music. *I probably have recency bias too but I'd prefer Adele or Amy Winehouse to this.
Another pretty good album by her. She kind of has some Karen Carpenter, pre-disco pop vibes. The second half of the album is a lot of repeat tracks, but otherwise pretty solid.
Liked this one more than I expected. Not my normal style of music but was worth hearing at least once.
Hard to beat this one.
Necessary
Generally sweet but not incredibly memorable. The symphony sounds nice.
This was nice. She has a beautiful voice but it kind of ran together.
Lots of good tracks. Son of a preacher man is still my favorite. Windmills of your mind reminded me of a Rodriguez song.
she has a beautiful voice but I always have trouble staying engaged when listening to her music. i think too much of this old classic style just doesn't work for me, but the songs individually and perhaps in separate instances would resonate with me more because they are great on their own. Fav track: I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore
Good voice Fun tunes Favorite song: just a little lovin, breakfast in bed, just one smile
meh
It was cute and romantic and lowkey I thought dusty Springfield was a dude before this
Wow, her voice is beautiful. I really enjoyed it. It's not really something I'll listen to on a regular basis.
Cruisy listen on a weekend Fave track: Son of a Preacher Man
Doesn’t sound dusty at all. 3.5/5
Was alright, enjoyed the preacher man song
Was okay.
Rv
God her voice is incredible. Something about this album made me feel peaceful, intrigued and just woah. Loved the instrumentation too!!
6.5/10. Good vocal performance, but as an entire album, it starts to blend together into one long song. Lacks a bit of soul and range. Decent.
I quite liked this one added a few
Good
Nice and smooth, great voice. I’ve loved Son Of A Preacher Man since Pulp Fiction, like everybody else, but that’s comfortably the biggest highlight and only real takeaway for me.
3.5
tavidan kai iyo mere mombezrda
This was good. I enjoyed Dusty's smoky vocals, which just added to the mostly sombre instrumentals. Favourite Track(s): Son Of A Preacher Man, I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore, No Easy Way Down Least Favourite Track(s): In The Land Of Make Believe
Some nice songs, great voice but not really my style. Might revisit once but didn't think it was amazing.
Solid live performance from ol Dusty here. 3.7/5.
son of a preacher man perfect nummer. vond haar andere plaat van de week leuker dus deze maar ietsje minder sterren? maar t is om t even
Dusty is so smooth it's... I don't want to say boring, but it can sometimes feel a little uninteresting. That said, Windmills of Your Mind is the best song here and one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I had forgotten about it and now it's front of mind.
Good soul music. Some pretty good songs here and loved the yearning and heartbreak themes as well. I don't think I had ever heard her music, but was a pretty good one overall.
This is prob objectively a good album, just beyond my depth to truly appreciate
Nice listen. Soulful and a bit jazzy. Great voice. Can imagine this would be a good album to spin on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Soild album, love this memphis style! 3/5 Favorites: No Easy Way Down, So Much Love, I Don’t Want to Hear it Anymore
Delightful pop music
Is she Rick's Aunt? Sister? Ex?
good background music album. lots to appreciate here
It's like a warm cup of tea... So cozy.
Not my cup of tea. But I know how to appreciate different types of music 6/10
I did know what this was until Son of a Preacher Man started playing. The vocals on the album were pretty good and the music itself was decent to listen to.
Wasn't familiar with any of Dusty's stuff besides "Son of a Preacher Man". Firstly, Dusty's voice is fantastic, and the orchestral backing here is all very nice. There's a reasonable amount of variety in terms of instrumentation, but I think the overall theme/feel of the album gets a bit stale. Easy listening, probably only as background music for me, high 3.
I didn't mind this and it was short. There were some stereotypical orchestral greatness when it all comes together which I enjoyed. Very Low 3.
Favorite track(s): Son of a Preacher Man, I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore, The Windmills of Your Mind
To be listened to
