Pretty good, some bangers
Weitere prägende Tracks sind „Just a Little Lovin’“, „I Don’t Want to Hear It Anymore“, „The Windmills of Your Mind“ und „I Can’t Make It Alone“.
So soft, so wispy, so edgeless - girl can really sing, if you like that musical style. I don't.
Decent listen. Preacher's son is such a great song! However, the rest for me were just okay.
What a strange choice for the second/later of Dusty Springfield's albums in this collection, especially given how much this bombed when it was released. To me, there's nothing really wrong with the album, but the songs just don't really do much either, and I can see how it might have fallen flat in 1969 as musical tastes and trends went elsewhere. On the other hand, her version of "Son of a preacher man" is a timeless and nearly perfect classic, even if it sounds totally different (and much much better) from the rest of the album. I feel badly rating this album only three stars given that one track, but the rest is so...average...it makes it hard to boost the score (and I'm mystified why I gave her other album five stars, other than because it was one of the first albums I listened to in this collection).
Breakfast in Bed and Preacher Man are standouts; wish the rest of the album was as good or as interesting.
I was really only familiar with Son of a Preacher Man. She kind of sounds like the female counterpart of Tom Jones. This album starts pretty strong with the first track. Windmills of Your Mind is great too. Has a very OG James Bond theme song type sound to it.
Nice collection of songs
Okay I guess, not really my style. Her voice is nice...?
My intro to Dusty, knew Son of a Preacher Man, but there were some other really good tracks as well. I really appreciated the more positive love vibes reflective of the era, other than the mopey depressing ones. Love her voice, album sounded great, few fillers to me
Is a female crooner a thing? If so that’s Dusty on this album. Part Frank Sinatra, part Van Morrison with a Aretha Franklin sprinkled in. All that to say this album is VERY mellow.
Pretty meh. Son of a preacher man is a stand out but the rest doesn’t showcase her talents like it should. Closer to a 3 than a 3.5.
I first heard of Dusty Springfield when the Pulp Fiction soundtrack came out and it had "Son of A Preacherman." I had never heard the song but knew it from it being sampled on "Hits from the Bong" by Cypress Hill. This album does not reach the highs of "Black Sunday" for me but it is still pretty good. Springfield has a beautiful voice and the musicianship on the album especially the strings and Spanish guitar is impressive. I would rate this a 4 if there were more variety of songs. The vast majority of the tracks are very similar and can blend together. 3.25/5
I can see the influence that she had on subsequent artists like Adele, Amy Winehouse, and similar. And frankly, I think they improved on what Dusty started. I liked a few of the songs, but after a few they all are very similar. The lyrics also aren't super inspiring (though a lot were borderline raunchy). Her voice is amazing though!
3/6
Pretty good! Best songs are Windmills of your Mind and Son of a Preacher Man. Classic country with a jazzy 60s influence.
It's not really what I like, but it's not something a would turn off either. Her voice is great, though. Son of a Preacher Man is a keeper.
Lovely voice, a little overwrought on the arrangements. Too much of a good thing, as these 60s pop albums often are. Son of a preacher man is great, but everything else is just fine.
Great songs, great voice but not much more than background music for me. Do love "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Windmills of My Mind" though.
Nice enough. No strong feelings either way. Just a pleasant little listen.
Quiet and a tad country. Some songs were a bit boring. 6/10
I love Dusty's voice. My mom used to play some of her songs back in the day. Great background music album, but not the most engaging/interesting album. Kinda curious as to how she has two albums on this list... I think this is a decent 3. Son of a Preacher Man takes me back
Enjoyed her smoky vocals. Best song Son of a Preacher Man
Tre. Bra når det er bra, noe filler. Gudinne på singler.
Opp og ned.
Some fun songs and good vibes. Love Windmill of your Mind.
I get why this is on the list, and why people like it. Not really my cup of tea, but it doesn't make me want to "change the station" The first song sounds a lot like a TV commercial.
Beautiful, pleasant - Not my thing, but good listening. 3/5
Couple bangers in this one. Opening track was by far the weakest of the bunch. Not something I would listen regularly, certainly a mood type of a listen.
Great
A moody vibe!
It’s hard to believe this album wasn’t a big critical success when it was first released because it definitely sounds like it could’ve been. Now, it’s been rightfully looked back on as one of the best albums ever. This was my first time listening to it, and I thought it was a really solid album. The orchestration stood out to me a lot, and while Dusty Springfield’s voice is fantastic, I found myself appreciating the musical elements even more.
Don’t totally love this, but of course son of a preacher man is great. Nice frank treatment of a girl’s sexuality without being lascivious. And windmills of your mind is surprisingly interesting.
Didn't know this was a girl or that she was british, really good - thought it would be country but it's more orchestral
Dusty sounds more in her element on this one. Soulful, bluesy - put it on at your murder/mystery party or something.
Nice album. Kinda Motown vibes. Want to check out more. Haven’t really listened before
My wife is in a wind band in the village and this is very much their style. Think an old lady get dewy eyed, one cold, veiny hand giving a little squeeze as the other taps slightly out of rhythm. The scent of flowers, piss and cleaning products. A simpler time when the milkman got a Christmas bonus. Shall we have another sherry? No, I think one is enough.
Aggressively 60s and pretty fun to listen to
Beautiful voice. Don't Forget About Me stood out, besides obv Preacher Man. 3/5
Pretty good, not as good as abbey road. A few classics as well. Songs added to playlist: Just a Little Lovin’ Son Of A Preacher Man Breakfast In Bed The Windmills Of Your Mind No Easy Way Down I Can’t Make it Alone
honestly pretty alright. not much else to say.
2 great songs. No garbage.
Dusty this is aberage 3 puntos album par excellence

This bish needs to change her name to Sultry. Sultry Springfield is not only more alliterative, but ON BRAND with her music. Now that I'm thinking about it, Sultry would be a pretty terrible name to go through life with. "Sultry, will you pass me the salt?" Oof- Nevermind what I said before. Great album though.
Very well produced. Instrumentation near flawless.
5/10
Very good.
Son of a Preacher Man is iconic of course, and The Windmills of the Mind is a good song too, but the rest of the songs don't really come close to that level. Nice in general... Nice but forgettable.
1969 Beautiful Soul sound from Dusty. I hadn't really heard any of her music until this album but hearing her voice is instantly recognizable. I think this is regarded as a great album but I don't think it truly stand up in my listening rating.
it was ok and fun. i def prefer some others like nick drake or joni mitchel. i might come back to it
Nicely produced, well arranged, smooth and calm blue-eyed soul/r'n'b-pop by Dusty Springfield. It's a short album that went by quickly and only Son of a Preacher Man was familiar to me. Sometimes I like to listen to such music, sometimes it's too inoffensive and calm. I'll just stick to 3 (it's closer to 4).
Just a Little Lovin' - 5/5 So Much Love - 3/5 Son of a Preacher Man - 5/5 I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore - 4/5 Don't Forget About Me - 3/5 Breakfast in Bed - 4/5 Just One Smile - 3/5 The Windmills of Your Mind - 4/5 In the Land of Make Believe - 3/5 No Easy Way Down - 3/5 I Can't Make It Alone - 3/5 Average score: 3.6/5 (rounding down) it's a nice album but aside from Son of a Preacher Man and maybe a couple other tracks i kinda lost interest
I initially wondered why this reminded me of Carole King until I looked at the credits and everything made sense. Son Of A Preacher Man is a classic and this record as a whole has some great moments. Favorites were So Much Love, Son Of A Preacher Man, Breakfast In Bed, and The Windmills Of Your Mind.
Son of a Preacher Man is so iconic and really enjoyed the other sons. It's wild that this fell flat on release and needed years to grow in estimation. It's good!
She has a great voice and catchy music. I had heard one song before but the whole album was a blast listening through.
Dang. Dusty was after it.
Nothing really stood out to me. Maybe Windmills Of The Mind. But inoffensive
pretty sweet
Good album. Not my favorite album from the 60’s
3/5
This one felt like Breakfast In Bed.
Have on vinyl: No Rating: 7.5 Fav Song: Son of a Preacher Man Notes: Harder to like an album when the singer wrote none of the songs.
Ok, so, the sound of the 70's that I've grown up despising, seems to have started with this album. That being said, in bits I can actually appreciate it, and there are moments in here that are pretty fantastic. It actually gets more tolerable as I listen to it more, so maybe I just need to embrace the decade of my introduction to life a little more... This whole album could be the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's genre, no surprise that Son of a Preacher Man is on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, and even after a gazillion listens I still love that one.
Son of a Preacher Man is the standout. I enjoyed it more than I expected.
Love this. Son of a Preacherman - OVERplayed
It was nice - I could definitely see the influence on Adele.
Love it.
Easy listening hard to knock it
Had a good one, didn’t save. Blue eyed soul with a sad backstory.
The intro of the son of a preacher man sounds familiar. The windmills are good as well. Generally, songs with higher views completely merit them.
Lepe pesmicice al ne bas po mom ukusu Radio sam sklekove dok sam slusao ovo i nije me bas nahajpovalo iskreno
II did not use a private spotify session for this one. I like it, it's in the genre of white-folks-appropriating-music-from-others-but-doing-it-more-commercially-successfully-because-they-are-white, but that is not why I like it.
Was surprised by it - that had some interesting elements in the instruments. Only knew "Son of a Preacher Man" but quite like a couple of songs. Though some parts very overly dramatic/kitschy, especially with the strings. But I see myself coming back to some songs.
Hits from the bong
Doesn't quite connect with me. It's kind of a 'if I'm not paying attention and it's playing I wouldn't turn it off' but it's not something I can see ever actively putting on beyond a track or two. Horns and strings are nice backing on some of the songs. I'm probably a 2.5 on this. 3 feels generous, but 2 feels harsh.
For my money, I will always take Joan Osborne’s version of “Son of a Preacher Man.” I think it has something to do with authenticity. Dusty has a lovely voice, but sometimes it seems like she’s just singing the words on the paper in front of her.
I think I'm happy the my mind is seemingly windmill-less. She's got a great voice. Son of a Preacher Man is a great song. Really highlights the sexiness aspect of her singing. The music on the rest of the songs is competent and mostly forgettable. 3.5, rounded down. Tempted to round up just based on SoaPM, but I'm just not likely to come back to the album as a whole.
It was an ok album. One great song the others were alright. Low 3 high 2
I've never heard this album other than the obvious hit. I had no idea she was English. I'm giving this the same 3/5 I gave the Keith Jarrett album yesterday (not my cup of tea but I won't penalize it just because I'm not into the genre.)
Oh, this is the Son of a Preacher Man singer? Whoa. I'm not familiar with any other of her songs, but I like that one. Let's listen... Interesting mix of soul, lounge, and 60's easy listening. It's a pleasant enough album, but I wouldn't vibe this on a regular basis. Maybe kick back on a Sunday, drinking s scotch and watching the sunset. I liked The Windmills of Your Mind and No Easy Way Down. I'll give this a 3.5
Meh
I didn’t enjoy this Dusty album as much as the other one. But it was still okay.
I liked it a lot better than the previous Dusty album that was on the list. I’d give it 3.5 if it was an option, but not a full 4.
Better than her other album on this list! Was a son of a preacher man!
4/11, 36%
Hits from the Bong!
Interesting light album.
This is an easy listen, nothing crazy though
another one where I know the songs but didn't really know who recorded it. great album. a lot of very similar songs but all very good
Keep getting her and Buffalo Springfield mixed up. This was fine.
Music for divas
Didn't know a white woman from england was singing that
Listened once. Didn’t think any of the songs were anything to note, but overall it was nice album.
I liked this more than I thought I would. I also learned she was the one who sang "Son of a Preacher Man".
Nice little album. If I had this on vinyl I could see myself listening to it while I made breakfast on a Sunday or something. Son of a Preacher man is obviously the tentpole here. The rest of the album, while pleasant, did not really stand out to me. I did not even notice until the album had looped until Preacher Man came on a second time. Solid 3 but not quite memorable enough for a 4 from me.
in my opinion, this is a standard country album. kudos to Dusty for being a woman in the industry during that time, but this album didn't really blow me away. wouldn't seek it out again, but glad I was able to give it a listen.
This is a two or a three based on my ratings thus far. I thought it was pleasant to listen to throughout and I didn’t get bored, despite the fact that this isn’t my typical kind of music. Typically my 3s have been decent albums with a couple of really good hits. I felt like this album was a 3 as a whole, but didn’t have the highs or lows as other 3s. Reluctant 3.
Saved this one for a lazy Sunday afternoon and I’m glad I did. Made for some excellent music while enjoying the sunshine on the porch. I think I’m a little ignorant when it comes to Dusty Springfield, though. It’s a solid album, but other than Son of a Preacher Man, I don’t see why this one might have made the list. Either way, a solid three.
Oh boy. Here we are again on Monday morning trying to remember the album from Friday. I do remember liking her voice, and "Son of a Preacher Man" is an all time classic. A pleasant listen with a big hit puts it around a 3.5 for me.
A mostly forgettable album for me but I can't deny the masterful songwriting techniques, plus the production feels so massive its like a blockbuster movie of an album. I zoned out for the most part but I would sometimes get pulled back in by some really cool string sections or chord progressions. The obvious highlight is Son of a Preacher Man, but I couldn't help but feel that Dusty just isn't the right person to sing it. (I later learned that it was originally written for Aretha Franklin whose version you can listen to but the arrangement is unfortunately lacking in comparison)
Contains some absolute classic songs. However a significant selection are pretty forgettable.
Enjoyable voice and listening experience
me gusto
This was fine to listen to although I don't foresee ever needing to hear it again. Funny how sometimes an artist just hits on a song. "Son of a Preacher Man" is on such another level than the other songs it's easy to see why it has about 650million or more listens than any other song. The other highlight was "The Windmills of your Mind."
When I saw this cover, I was pretty sure that I was going to find this album boring. But to be honest, I didn't. Don't judge it by its cover and title; this is not bland Americana/Folk. This is instead a UK "soft" soul singer with a bunch of great songs, including the successful single Son of a Preacher Man. I'm glad I don't understand English lyrics if I'm not actively paying attention because I looked at a couple of them, and they seem a bit lame. "You stopped and smiled at me And asked if I'd care to dance I fell into your open arms And I didn't stand a chance"
2.5/5
OK-ish!!!
OK, chill-out album to play in the background while you're doing whatever. The only song that stands out is Son Of A Preacher Man. I liked the music, the arrangements are great, whole symphonies are playing behind her voice. But overall this is just an average album, nothing special.
Interesting, soft and calm.
Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis Album Review Dusty in Memphis is one of those albums that’s nice while it’s on but doesn’t leave a huge impression once it’s over. Dusty Springfield’s voice is undeniably smooth and soulful, and the production has that warm, polished late-60s feel, but for all its reputation as a classic, it never quite hits the way you expect it to. Tracks like Son of a Preacher Man and Just a Little Lovin’ stand out as clear highlights, but much of the album settles into a pleasant, if unremarkable, groove. It’s all very well-crafted, but there’s something a little too restrained about it—like Dusty is holding back rather than fully letting loose. The arrangements are tasteful, the instrumentation is lush, and the whole thing sounds effortlessly classy, but it lacks that extra spark to push it into great territory. It’s the kind of album that works well as background music, a mellow and easy listen, but nothing about it really demands your attention. That said, Dusty in Memphis is a fine album, just not an exciting one. It’s smooth, polished, and nice enough, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that it should be more than just nice.
Like dusty
Love Dusty, amazing voice. But in terms of album it’s kinda weak…mainly coz the songs are repeated 3 times?
Was good and I learned something but marked down for the extra songs that are the same
I didn't realize how heavily orchestrated this album was. And of course Preacher Man is a classic song.
Filmisk lyd. Stor 3er.
too slow for my taste but I still appreciate it
Great voice, good songs, good performances
A few songs written by Randy Newman. A Side highlight is Son of a Preacher Man. That song is 5/5, rest of this side is 3.5/5 B Side was just ok, 3/5
Good album but would not sing these songs to a new born baby.
I love the hard-pans of the instruments. Really a thing of the time. Beatles obv did it. Straddles that weird era of chamber pop and 60’s am radio friendly stringy. Great closing track
Great songs, superb voice, a music that can only come from this special era in the US
She’s good I didn’t love the songs tho. 3.3 for sounding nice and being ok
She sounds nice but this doesn’t knock you off your feet. Some songs sound like they could be in a Kill Bill movie (a flashback part)
lovely voice! Hits and misses but the covers are dead on!
I’ve never listened to anything like this before, but it was enjoyable! Definitely a really cool album. I don’t think I’d listen to it regularly, but it’s really great
Definitely white people soul, some cool arrangements and some cool songs, but not blue enough for me
Was reasonably enjoyable overall. A couple songs were quite good. But a few were pretty weak.
She is talented but this album is boring
Preacher Man.
Rocking blue eyed soul. Good stuff. I enjoyed this album.
Yeah not bad, but background music for me.
Epic?
Meh
I expected this to be more poppy like Carly Simon but this is more soul than anything. I’m not sure I really picked up a theme of this album but perhaps there isn’t one. All in all it’s not a forgettable album. I can see why Dusty was a middle of the road household name. She pushes the songs along, not really leaving you with a weird look on your face as if to say “what the hell is this trash”. I don’t highly recommend this album and I don’t stand behind it being a well liked one by all. I do give it an “ok” stamp of approval. Choice cut: Son of a Preacher Man
very enjoyable album. good listen. I respect this album. Liked this album. However didn't like it like tooo much. Maybe if there were more bangeroonies like son of a preacher man it would make it to a 4. Just barely misses out on a 4 for me icl no cap fr on god en jar.
Very enjoyable album 🙂 Not a huge amount to say, have a feeling this album would grow on me after a few more listens. Would give it a 3.5 if possible, some songs were very good, most were good. Fav song: Son of a Preacher Man
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this one as much as I did. Pop-soul? A singer who I only knew the name of? Turns out this was a marvelous listen, like a proto-popstar record, with all the extra charm of the 60's. Key tracks: Son of a Preacher Man I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore Just One Smile The Windmills of Your Mind
Lots of great songs. A very smooth, low-key sexy sound. Sensual and easy.
Asides from Son of a preacher man and windmills of your mind it's fairly standard blue eyed soul, little boring in parts but she does have a great voice. 3*
it was okay
Not really my type of music but definitely some of the best of its kind
Good old music
Really good old pop.
Some unexpected songs. I couldn't tell you who had made Son of a Preacher Man before so it was fun to hear some of those "I know these songs but I have never really listened to the original".
can't say i expected her to be english!
Nice easy listening album with the obvious standout being “Son of a preacher man”. Not much else to say here..
Growing up I really didn’t know much about Dusty other than her duet with the Pet Shop Boys in ‘87. And then later as part of the crowd that got reintroduced to her when “Son of a Preacher Man” was included on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. That track alone helps strengthen this listen. An overall really enjoyable album.
Some fine slow dancin’ music here.
She sings good.
This is a solid listen but doesn’t reach greatness level for me. Not much else to say. 3.5/5
a nice album. Had no idea she was behind "Son of a Preacher Man." I also enjoyed "Breakfast in Bed" and "The Windmills of Your Mind"
Good 60s pop. Nothing super grabbed me throughout it though
Good album, Son of a Preacher man is a goat.
Solid 3.5
Fly me to Memphis! I want Dusty! This album started off strong for me with some very catchy tunes. But faded for me in the second half of the album. Son of a Preacher Man's opening sounds like the opening to Hits From the Bong by Cyprus Hill.
One of those artists that so strongly define the decade. Dusty really shaped the sound of pop/soul in the 60s. I enjoyed this a decent amount.
She’s got a very unique and pretty voice. I usually listen to these albums in private- or maybe on headphones so it doesn’t disturb anyone- but this time I listened to it with my wife, and she described the voice as sensual. I can get down with that description. I had a lovely listening time with this album and have nary a negative thing to say, but the only song I knew walking in was Son of a Preacher Man, and that was also the only song I can recall walking out. So I don’t think I can give it higher than three stars.
Begins with a pleasant, upbeat excitement - like the first days of summer - outside, live music playing, a cold beer, friends around. It's optimistic, you're not even hoping at this point - you know things are going to be grand. "Son of a Preacher Man" is the crescendo of this inspired feeling. Then, things shift into a sultry, almost-but-not-quite heartbroken place. There's confusion, but it's tender. There's sadness, but it's accepted as par for the romantic course. There's a breathy anticipation here that feels like swooning and falling. It's intoxicating - when you're in the throes of passion, you'll gloss over things that are upsetting in service of the overall experience. We have to keep going - do we even have a choice? "Windmills in Your Mind" shows up then, and shifts gears. Slightly psychedelic, my favorite track on the album. It's mesmerizing. When heartache gives way to introspection which gives way to enlightenment. How many spirals will it take to resolve this hurt? Back to wistful again, tender, a touch of mourning. But that gives way to empowerment. We're back on top, but we've gained a secure kind of resilience that was distinctly lacking in the delicate, naive beginnings. We're back on top, but we've gained strength, wisdom, and humility.
I liked this. Its probably not something I'll revisit often, but I like this take on pop. Its kind of folky and bluesy with a hint of r&b. Its definitely pop music and I can see why people love her. I like that she kind of had some fun instrumentals. Like in "In the Land of Make Believe" there is a cittar. "Son of a Preacher" is no doubt the high point of the album and is a song that everyone should revisit from time to time.
Typical of the Pop / R&B / Soul albums being made by white female singers in the late 1960s - it may have been historically relevant at the time, but I'm not sure if it deserves inclusion in this list. Largely unforgettable, apart from the hit "Son of a Preacher Man".
Very sixties smokey bar with a cocktail vibe. Super smooth, beautiful voice.
Great singer, great voice
She’s got an amazing voice but there’s a coolness factor that is missing.
Didn’t know who wrote son of a preacher man before this. Quite enjoyed this.
I like this stuff. Great voice. Love the bass drums but really wish all the strings sections would be replaced with horns. Those strings really didn't age well and borderline ruin some of these for me.
beautiful voice and very easy to listen to. other than “son of a preacher man”, nothing too special but “the windmills of your mind” was really good.
This was a tweener for me...3-4. A very memorable fun song ..and the rest of the album was a good listen, but probably will not go back and listen again.
This is fine, I guess. No strong feelings either way. It has its moments.
Fine
Bella son of a preacher
Highlights: 3: "Son of a preacher man" 5: "Don't forget about me" 7. "Just one smile" Overall the production is great. Lush strings with tasteful late 60's band sounds, including brass. Her voice is strong. Not an album I'll likely revisit in full, but was an enjoyable listen. Brill Building songs.
Nice classic country
I can tell she was good but id probs never listen again
Son of a Preachermen - another Pulp Fiction top hit.
Neat little album. Nothing besides Son of a Preacher Man really stands out, but that's ok. Some review called this "white people soul", and I think that's fair. Would also add "old" to that nowadays. 3.5/5
This is #day123 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... this is actually some beautiful vocal music with delicate arrangements. But I'd never seek this out as a record to play... That's just not my kind of music. The cover of The Windmills Of Your Mind stole my heart, though. I'm giving this a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day124.
Some good songs here Son of a Preacher Man of course, and a few others - but this feels more like a disparate set of songs than an album. Not bad but not excellent.
Not bad, pretty easy to listen to
Great voice and few songs were really good but the overall album sounds like background music in a boring restaurant rather than part of the music history.
Ta druga to nawet ulubiona piosenkarka mojego 70-letniego ojczyma. 3-/3
Some good songs towards the end but overall I didn’t really like the style/genre and the audio quality was weird and kind of hurt my ears at times.
Dusty is a bit dated, but can still pack a punch.
This didn't really do anything for me. Maybe in a different time or a different place...
Loved her voice. 3.5
decent
Son of a Preacher Man, great voice. Good album was a really good lesson. Couple of these songs will probably get put into the rotation
Good album.
Pretty decent album, nothing really blew me away, but also nothing bad. Son of a Preacher Man and The Windmills of Your Mind are the best songs here, everything else is OK. High 3.
Not my cup of tea, but she’s got a great voice. Always fun hearing Brits over accent the hard a sounds in words like man, can, etc.
No denying there's a wonderful distinctive voice here - you know it as soon as you here it. "Windmills" is, to me anyway, one of the most distinctive songs of the 60s, "Preacher Man" one of the most overplayed and overrated. Wanted to give it 4 stars, but such is my loathing for Preacher Man, I had to knock off another star. Sorry.
She's very calming.
Pretty good sound
It's nice but not super memorabele compared to some other stuff from the genre
I like preacher man, but the rest was bit too sugary for me.
Iconic songs on here, but over all it's a little whitebread vanilla.
3.5
As far as soul singer albums go this is pretty average. She's a good enough singer but I don't really see what makes her stand out among the crowd of other soul singers of the time, and maybe before and after as well. "Son of a Preacher Man" of course is a big hit, but that's the songwriting doing the work. Her performance is certainly fine, good even, but it's not like someone else couldn't do the job on that song. I liked "The Windmills of Your Mind" the best. It was also the only song not in a basic major key, I think. Easy listening. Short, not bad, not really memorable.
Beautiful soft voice.
I don't know, this felt too familiar to me. *Favorite track: Son of a Preacher Man
Nice voice and great orchestrations made for a really clean and nostalgic vibe. I think the songs got a little less engaging after the first half. If they'd all been as catchy as Son of a Preacher Man, it would have been at least a 4.
Prior to listening to this I had only heard Dusty's Son of a Preacher Man. It also has a cover of Windmills of Your Mind who The Colourfield also covered. Pretty enjoyable album. I enjoy Dusty's voice.
Very standard soul music - didn't find it too catchy (apart from "son of a preacher man"), but a nice vibe that would fit a specific time lik driving in summer. "Don't forget about me" was another favourite from the album, high energy and catchy. A lot of forgettable songs overall
Two tracks of absolute gold in 'Son of a Preacher Man' and 'Windmills of your mind'. The rest is a great showcase of Dusty's lovely voice ... just without much impact.
Not a bad album, they knew that "Son Of A Preacher Man" would be such a good hit that they even put it twice in here. Pretty enjoyable, especially for a background listen, but slightly meh nowadays, as this is over 50 years old now. Overall, I did enjoy the vibes though, and I am sure people absolutely bopped to it back in the day.
I like Dusty. Her voice is only okay - but it's got a sultriness that I appreciate. Love the songs with horns, don't care for the ones with strings.
I didn’t get a chance to listen to the whole album but I was enjoying it
#52 Son of A Preacher Man is a classic, and her voice is gorgeous. Unfortunately a bit boring otherwise, will only listen to it as background music to a dinner party or something.
To preface, I listened to the original album sequence without bonus tracks. Overall this record is 11 songs full of soul and emotion. Springfield has a strong set of pipes and delivers this material well. Having listened to “A Girl Called Dusty” last week, this sounds like significant steps forward from that record that a few years earlier. The instrumentation is top notch. “Just a Little Lovin’,” “So Much Love,” and “I Can’t Make It Alone” are standouts.
A great album to stick on in the background and a great voice. Not a whole bunch of replay-ability but I liked it!
Dusty in Memphis can be a bit misleading at first glance—it sounds like it could be a live recording, but it’s actually a studio album. There’s no doubt that Dusty Springfield can sing, and her vocal talent is undeniable. However, aside from a few exceptions, I don’t feel like the songs live up to the standard her voice sets. This is surprising, considering songwriters like Burt Bacharach, Carole King, and Randy Newman are credited. The songs are still good, but it feels like Dusty deserves more than just “good.” Standout track: Son of a Preacher Man. Score: 3/5.
This is another one I would have never likely listened to an entire album, having heard a few isolated tracks. Its good overall, nothing amazing to me.
So I liked this but did I love it? Not really? So like 3.5… which is getting old tbh.
not bad but not my tea
1 incredibly good song in an unremarkable album
Ok background music but not very memorable, except the windmills from a remix and son of a preacher man
Musically satisfying front-to-back, and Dusty's vocals are really great. The lyrics get a bit repetitive, and you can tell that they were following some formula to try to get a hit, and in this case succeeded.
I like her! This entire album is me going omg, so this is who sings x
timeless yet somehow extremely memorable?? Windmills of Your Mind & son of a preacher man are fabulous. Her voice is striking and it's a shame she didn't write more of her own material... will revisit singles but not as an album
I really liked windmills of your man (kinda reminded me of girl from Panama) and also son of a preacher man.
Very soulful and some excellent songs
Fairly middle of the road stuff. A couple that raised themselves above average.
Dusty Springfield is one of the greatest vocalists ever, but for me, despite her technical excellence, she never really "sold" most of her songs to me... Perhaps, because she didn't write them. The two most famous tracks on this album I already know from my love of films; Windmills of Your Mind, from the original Thomas Crown Affair, and the best track on the album, Son of a Preacher Man from Pulp Fiction.n Dusty in Memphis (although the vocals were recorded in New York) is considered one of the greatest flops of all time... And I can see why, there isn't anything on it that would have me rushing of to the record store to buy it.
Son of a Preacher Man 👌🏻
Pleasant listening that comes across as little more than background music to my ears.
decent album but certainly not The Boss’ best. 63/100 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Sterk soul album! FAVO: Son of a preacher man, Dont forget about me, Just One Smile, I can't make it alone
Great voice, good songs, not that interesting as a whole. Might need a re-listen.
I expected the album "Dusty in Memphis" by Dusty Springfield to be a live album by a country music man. I haven't knowingly listened to her before, but this album is really good. "Son of a Preacher Man" is amazing. I've heard it many times before and always enjoy it. "Don't Forget About Me" has me moving. Besides those two songs, the rest all felt a little boring. I'm not a big fan of slow paced crooning songs. The instrumentation wasn't very interesting, and the focus was largely on Dusty's singing and her lyrics. I can see the appeal for someone who loves that, but it doesn't quite do it for me. 6/10
Good
This was rather good. I completely forgot about Dusty Springfield. In fact, hearing some of these songs, I thought were performed and written by other artists. Very poetic. Very beautiful. Unsure of who her contemporaries would be... Without looking it up. Janis Joplin? Joni Mitchell? I don't know.. Anyways, I enjoy her over them I think. I dislike the Son Of A Preacher Man song though. This might be one of her Bette for more well known songs but I can't get past picturing the same people doing What's Up? By 4 non blondes in karaoke, doing this song. And that's irritating. But I also just don't care for the song.
Actually quite enjoyable!
Heard a few songs from this album. It was a nice bluesy album. Would listen to it again
3/5
It's an alright late 60s rock album, could be more experimental or progressive for my taste, but that's being nit-picky
Eh
Very nice voice. Enjoyable listen without being mind-blowing. 2.5
Not bad for a white English woman, pretty classy. Soon of a Preacher Man is a classic. Lots of Memphis Horns. I like it, but I only 3 star like it.
Didn’t love it, but it does have Son Of A Preacher man.
Fun fact I learned during this listen: Dusty Springfield is British. With a name like that, I assumed she was American. The music definitely leans into that Southern soul vibe, which makes it even more surprising. Son of a Preacher Man is the standout here, no question. It’s iconic for a reason. But the rest of the album kind of fades into the background. Nice voice, solid production, but it didn’t leave a big impression on me beyond that one track. Good, not great.
Cough cough
Þessi var nú hreint ekki svo slæm. Ég mun samt örugglega ekki setja hana aftur á nema ég reyni að muna eftir henni. Ekki að hún sé slæm. Bara auðvelt að gleyma henni
Amongst the filler, Dusty's intimate voice entices you and draws you in to a warm and moody soundscape. A little more consistency would do this album wonders but nevertheless, it was still a good listen.
Pretty good. Slow at first but then you start enjoying it. Really old too. Half of the album is a live version of it.
First of all, "Son of a Preacher Man" is one of the greatest recordings of all time. Sadly, the rest of the album isn't near that standard. There are nice points and the band is great, but Dusty's voice is sometimes mildly unpleasant and the material veers sharply into schlock.
1st time listening 6/10
I do like me some Dusty. About what I expected from a full album of hers.
3 stars. For some reason I thought Dusty Springfield was a guy.
Really nice smooth experience that shows some additional range, having only been familiar with her much earlier work. She got a great voice brimming with authenticity and soul, with just enough twang to really bring those country-soul musicians backing her to life. Nice mix of country, gospel, soul vibes packaged in a pop-ready production. There's some 60's era cheese are here to be sure, but it's overall landing in a space one can embrace. This is well written music, sang with heart, and good music for the soul.
Son of a preacher man is 15/10 wow Other than that I was pretty bored but she’s an icon ofc
New listen for me. Clean vocals and instrumentals. Soulful and easy to listen to. Surprisingly good.
Decent album, I liked the instrumentals a lot and the vocals too. Not too much change between tracks and they kind of melt together on first listen. Standouts: The Windmills of Your Mind, No Easy Way Down, I Can't Make It Alone. strong 6
Sweet music
Son of a preacher man
An AM staple with several radio hits from my youth. I imagine this one is dated around many participants in this group.
I liked this one, I of course knew "Son of a Preacher Man" which is a great song, but most of the rest was new to me.
Good example of an album I appreciate but likely won't listen to again. Beautiful voice, great songwriting, just not my usual cup of tea.
Dusty Springfield was definitely a singer for a certain age. Her song Son of a Preacher Man is a classic that should be preserved for all times. This album is intriguing because some of it has that classic Memphis sound well others of it feels like it’ll be best left for Broadway and vocal jazz. Aside from the obvious favorite, Don’t Forget About Me has a great horn section and Just One Smile has almost Gospel feel. Overall those, the A-Side of this album is repeat play. The B-Side, for me, has aged out and should be left there…
Son of a Preacher Man is an all-time classic. The rest of this is good stuff and her voice sounds great but it sounds like something I would have loved if I had been alive in 1969. The first song sounded like Burt Bacharach. The rest was more generic blues/pop and was fine but I haven't been missing a hidden legend here. Whenever I hear the beginning of "Son of a Preacher Man", I still hear Cypress Hill's "Hits Form the Bong". I guess that was deeply imprinted on my 16 year-old brain. lol
Okay calling this music generic or uninspiring would be rather crass. Its music for for thee, perhaps not for me. Dusty seems to have a phenomenal voice and song writing style, but landed somewhere amongst the one hit wonders. I don't think many would be mad I said that. Good music, but relatively mundane.
son of a preacher man is elite
This seemed like something I’d like - jazzy, soulful - but for whatever reason, it just didn’t click. I couldn’t get into it today.
Ein paar Lieder waren bekannt, bestes: "Son of a preacher man".
An easy listen, great songs.
3. Very listenable. But a 5 for Son of a Preacher Man
I’m mostly here to see what direction Layde goes with his impending (hopefully) hot blue-eyed soul takes. As far as my take - I think Dusty has an amazing, sultry voice, and while …in Memphis has a great set of songs with lush arrangements it’s still just a good album. All those pieces, while great on their own, just don’t completely come together often enough. The blend of pop and soul is too balanced, never creating its own identity. Her rendition of Windmills of Your Mind is probably the song that puts those three aforementioend elements together the best, but it’s also the furthest away from the style of the rest of the album. Breakfast in Bed is similar, but to a lesser degree. That all said, tracks like Son of a Preacher Man, Just One Smile, No Easy Way Down and Don’t Forget About Me are such great fuckin songs that this album is worth repeated spins. But I’d feel that way regardless of who’s singing. 3.5
Preacher Man is legendary- but the rest? Meh.
She's got chops obviously but the production feels a little overwrought. "Breakfast in Bed" is a nice cut.
First listen. Decent.
Enjoyed the freshness and gospel-like sound of her voice. Loved Son of a Preacher Man!
I had heard a couple of these before. She has a great voice. I liked it more than I thought I was going to.
Son of a preacher man fuckin slaps.
Fave track, predictably: "Son of a Preacher man"
60s sensibilities
7/10 Highlights: Just a Little Lovin' Son of a Preacher Man Breakfast in Bed
Wel mooi, en Son of a Preacher Man is goud. 7/10 Highlights Son of a Preacher Man
It matched with the Sunday mood.
Really good singer, but a bit boring and monotonous after several songs.
Better than I expected, a high 3.
Despite the all-star Bryll Building writing lineups that created this album, this is a miss for Jerry Wexler. The fault lying in all this talent backed a mediocre at times performance by Dusty Springfield. This one hit wonder produced one hit too many. Shame but with the right talent at the microphone or in the booth this album could be something different. 3/5
Much better than the other Dusty album, not totally for me but was good for a listen. Can't unhear hits from the bong though. Will I listen to again: 10%
Good, chill music. I read about her and thought i would enjoy it more. It was good, but i wouldn't call it stellar.
She has a nice voice and son of a preacher man is hands down her best song. Overall it was a decent album.
white blues
The sound quality on this album leaves a bit to be desired, but she has a beautiful voice, and it's showcased well here. Son of a Preacher Man doesn't sound like the other sounds on this album, since most of the songs have more of an orchestra sadness to them 3/5
Love Dusty, incredible voice. The ballads are a bit too syrupy and boring, but I enjoyed it. 3.5/4.
Liked it. There’s some real ingenuity in some of these songs. 7+
how lovely
Son of a Preacher is a great song. Not my favourite album but nice to put on.
