Is thIs REALLY an album I NEED to hear??!

It's pretty, Son Of A Preacher Man is an all time classic, but as a whole it's pretty dated and not in a good way.

This album passed me by very quickly. Amazing voice, we all know the best song, the rest aren't up alongside it but it's certainly a vibe.

Windmills of your minds jest cute? Nie moja muzyka, przeleciało przeze mnie. Słabe 2.

Lady with a pleasant voice sings songs someone else wrote. Not bad by an means, but nothing stood out.

Son of a Preacher Man is a classic, the rest of the album does not measure up in my opinion.

Random thoughts… I had forgotten that Cypress Hill sampled Preacher Man for “Hits from the Bong” - normally think about Pulp Fiction when I hear it. The US album cover (Dusty with her hands on her face) looks like Keith Richards in drag. Don’t care for these mid 60s albums where a singer is backed up with an overwhelming helping of orchestration. Most folks aren’t Frank Sinatra and they can’t pull it off. Preacher Man is so different from the rest of this album. Would have been better to find more songs in that area.

Honestly pretty unremarkable and underwhelming. Every song sounds almost exactly the same, and that gets old on what's already a really short album. A very pleasant listen, but doesn't really do anything for me outside of one really excellent and engaging song. Top tracks: The Windmills of Your Mind

I don't really get the hype around Dusty. She's not a great album artist and I would really rather listen to Aretha.

After Son of a Preacher Man, I just started to look for covers of that song (as I had assumed Dusty’s wasn’t the original, but it is) and I ended up listening to the Aretha version twice. So my review of Dusty in Memphis is that Aretha Franklin is amazing.

Honestly kinda overrated, sorry

Dusty is just that pretty dusty. Her music comes from a past era. It’s tough to get into it for me, but her voice is fantastic and the music is so smooth. She’s good at what she does, but not for me. 5.8/10

I wasn't around in the 60s, so it's possible that I'm completely wrong about this, but this just feels like the 60s equivalent of what someone like Ed Sheeran is today. Super famous and popular, but actually really boring when it comes down to it. It feels like this music was made not out of artistic passion, but out of the want to be rich and famous.

This album is carried heavily by Son of a Preacher Man. While that's an amazing song, the rest of the album is very slow, sounds dated, and doesn't have a lot to offer. Not bad by any means but kind of boring. 4/10 (2/5)

I couldn't get into this. I can think of quite a few singers who have tried to sound like her, which is a neat realization after hearing this album. Aside from that, it was a bit boring for me. 2/5

Son of a Preacher man is the only ringer

I'm not entirely sure why this album is labeled as Soul/Jazz. I can get behind calling it blue-eyed soul. But it's really Pop with some jazz influences. She's got a great voice, and the album does a great job of highlighting it on every song. All of the instrumentation is just there to support her singing. Outside of her voice, though, the album is pretty bland. It's a good pop album, but not a great one, and pop is just pretty boring. If it was any singer other than Dusty, this would probably be 1-star.

This has THE canonical version of Son Of A Preacher Man but other than that I actually found this kind of lacking/boring. Maybe the 'lady pop vocalist' thing has lost some of the shine since the 60's?

Gosh i mean this music genre is just never something I’ll be super into, so listening to an hour + of it was just confirmation that I’ll never look for it. I’m sure it’s great for some but I just don’t see any appeal to it.

It's milquetoast fine. Dusty doesn't emote much emotion with her voice, so the entire album is kind of flat to listen to.

Something was happening in Memphis in 1969. First Elvis, now this. And while this is probably the better of the things that happened there, it's still a toothless, limpid excuse for an album. This was mum and dad music in '69 and it's music for folks that are long gone. I heard it. What's next?

It’s fine. I’ve…had…better

I was really hoping to have my preconceived notions turned on their head, but I was disappointed to find I just can't stand this. I have always hated "Son of a Preacher Man," and that's probably my favorite song on the album. There's no deficiencies here from a musical standpoint, I just don't like Dusty Springfield's voice and I don't like this style of music.

Perfect for carly's birthday. Thank god this is the last dusty trombone album we will have to listen to. At least this one had "son of a preacher man". i think i don't really like this older blue-eyed soul bc it comes off as corny when white people do it. I do kind of see the influence of this kind of stuff on someone like Adele or Amy Winehouse (per the wikipedia page)

Surprised to find out she’s a Brit with the name Dusty Springfield and an album titled Dusty In Memphis. Love the album name, points for that. Just figured she was a Georgia (or TN) girl based on Son Of A Preacher Man (best song) so kudos on the disguised voice. The rest of the album sounds like it’s from a 60s variety show with some gospel stirred into the background, not bad - just kinda dated. No need to listen again or seek out her other albums (2.2*s)

Briefly, before I listen to it, I already knew son of a preacher man and love that song! So I'm excited to listen to this album. Listened to the rest of it, not bad, but a little boring in my opinion. Its an easy, chill, 70s album, but i probably wouldn't listen to much.

Did not like. All the songs blurred together. It wasn't even interesting enough to keep my attention I started doing something else and just had this on in the background. Not my cup of tea. If the songs had other subjects besides just love and relationships this might have gotten a three. But it didn't so its stuck with a two.

I like this, but it didn’t land the way I thought it would. Maybe I was in a bad mood, maybe it’s because while I was listening to it I read about the term “blue-eyed soul” and it left a weird taste in my mouth. That’s life.

It's 60s torch song stuff, which is fine, if a bit dull - but Son of a Preacher Man is outstanding. The Windmills Of Your Mind, however, is an entirely unnecessary cover - the sort of subtle Bossa Nova inflection really doesn't bring anything and makes me want to hear the Noel Harrison version.

I cannot stand Dusty's song "Spooky" so I'm really glad it's not on this album. that pretty much sums up what I liked about this album

While so much of the 1970s music is directed from here, what Dusty’s airy and weak voice created was all accomplished in higher standard by Diana Ross.

Sometimes a single great sing can elevate an otherwise boring album. Preacher Man is a pretty good song, but in this case I think he rest of the album is so boring and corny that it actually makes me like that song less.

Track 1: Just a Little Lovin’. Track 2: So Much Love Two tracks in and I’m utterly confused about the appropriate amount of lovin! Have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed by this album. Hadn't heard too much Dusty Springfield, but liked what I'd heard and had high hopes. I guess it's just not as soulful as I expected it to be. 🤷

I felt like cleaning the dusty ceiling fans when listening to this one. Man that joke sucked. Son of a Preacher Man is a certified banger. Outside of that, this one’s pretty forgettable to me. Run of the mill folk music, which a lot of folks at the time were doing better.

This album has a lottt of filler and I'm surprised it makes the list because her only popular song is a cover. She has a good voice but this feels like "white people soul" and, aside from Son of a Preacher Man, I don't care for it.

This is not the typical kind of music I listen to, but I can see the appeal. Springfield has a beautiful, sultry voice, which I think is best part of this album. However, there wasn't really a standout song for me on this album.

Some beautiful, classic songs but not something I'd listen to intentionally. Great for a movie sound track.

Breathy & mellow

Realized after a while that I was listening to the deluxe version. Was thinking I like the album but just a little too long. The original version would have been the perfect length and I would have enjoyed that more.

With the notable exception of songs that featured in Pulp Fiction, as well as The Windmills of Your Mind, I find the music here errs on the too mild side of things.

I was excited to listen to the whole album, because who doesn't love "Son of a Preacher Man," but honestly the rest of it had a sound that felt strangely empty. It yearns for a blues feel, but doesn't hold up because of the wispy nature of her voice. I wanted so much to love this.

Not my type of music. I used to like "Son of the Preacher Man", but probably I remember this song from covers or different arrangements, because the version on the album was quite slow and raw, in my opinion. And so is the rest of the album, but without that catchy phrase. Altogether, just a below average record for today's standards.

Listened Before? N Mehhhhhhhh. She's a great singer but this is not my style. The one song I recognize here is "Son of a Preacher Man", of course. I'm a genxer, Pulp Fiction brought that song to me and I kinda liked it then it got overplayed in the early 90s. So I'm really not a huge fan of this record in general. Couldn't finish it. Just a little lovin provides an excellently smoky start to this album, giving us a picture of Itchy Summerfield as a singer in the basement of a club singing to the regulars. However, this is a bit of a ruse as the rest of the album slips back into typical upbeat female crooner led late 60s pop. It’s not bad, but it isn’t doing much for me. The track of note here is obviously Son of a Preacher Man, which deserves every ounce of praise and admiration it has received over the years. Just a fantastic song, bringing together a funky rhythm with gospely singing. I can’t help but still think Urethra Franklin provides a more inspired lead on her version, but as the original this version deserves attention. At least on that track, Crusty’s vocal starts soft and gets somewhat excited towards the end but ultimately doesn’t drive us home with the conviction you want. Ultimately a lot of this album is forgettable. There’s a few decent tracks, one good track, and a bunch of filler.

Love Dusty, another one where the whole album disappointed but the famous ones didn't. My mum would have loved it.

As I get older I appreciate female vocals and in particular soulful female vocals more. Stunning voice. Lots of different songwriters on this, all interpreted by Dusty Springfield, although that was the norm I still can’t get my head around that setup. There’s a huge amount of emotion in that voice, from joy to pain. It’s clearly the voice of a British singer but I don’t know how that comes across. It does tend to turn a bit overly dramatic screechy voice and strings though and after a while the voice is sickly-sweet to my ears. 11 songs less than 33 minutes. It doesn’t help me to read that she couldn’t identify with some of the lyrics, that kills it for me, makes it fake, like an actress going through the motions, surely some soul is lost in that process ? I do like the start of each song though, the reflective soulful bits before it all goes ott and gets too much, but the latter is inevitable as I swear each song structure is the same.

Also, Dusty Springfield is English, which makes the whole act/theme seem pretty disingenuous. Probably won't revisit too much. Decent album but I wasn’t into it

I mean, she's got a great voice and all but it's still cheesy AF. Why did everything Dusty Springfield produce feel about 10 years behind the times? This was released in '69, for goodness sakes. It was a monster year of absolutely game-changing releases... but here we have Dusty, singing songs that belong in the previous decade. How this made it on the list, I don't know. It can't compare to "Abbey Road", "Nashville Skyline", "Tommy", "Led Zeppelin II", "The Stooges", or "In A Silent Way". It's just not even in the same weight class. And, for the record, I prefer Aretha's "Son Of A Preacher Man" to this one hands down, any day.

As a child of the late 70s and 80s, this strain of popular music always makes me think of those scenes in TV shows where they show the protagonist walking through an urban landscape in a montage. Or Sesame Street. There was always music like this on Sesame Street - I'm guessing they weren't always getting the latest, greatest acts. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's what you'd expect to hear in a smoky, slightly run-down supper club or on a variety show (Lawrence Welk, anyone?). I am aware that the supper club and variety show acts were copying these more popular, innovative acts, so it's not really a fair evaluation, But I just can't get past it. "Son of a Preacher Man" is impressive - Dusty can belt it out, no doubt - but overall? I don't need to hear this again

Possibly everyone knows “Son of a Preacher Man”. Other than that the album isn’t really memorable imo. A lot of slow songs that neatly blend into each other. Favorite Song(s): “Son of a Preacher Man”, “No Easy Way Down”

Aquí está "Son of a preacher man" y en general hay buenas canciones aunque el sonido no termina de ser muy bueno, se intuye que podría brillar más con una grabación más moderna. Las versiones mono solo cómo curiosidad. Se escucha pero no lo veo como un disco histórico aunque sí con un par de grandísimas canciones.

Starting off an album with a tune about wake up sex is kind of special. There are a few great songs on here along with a fair amount of garbage. She has a very good, but not brilliant, voice in my opinion. No Easy Way Down is so good. But now I don’t need to hear any of this again. Except maybe when Jan sings Son of a Preacher Man at the baby shower on the The Office.

This album has one good song and the rest is completely forgettable and sometimes not even good. but Son of a Preacher Man is really good.

The sound was more Paris than Memphis. Is she singing to her French lover who is beckoning her across the shag carpet to the pedal covered bed? The album cover has her in lace and I can't help but wonder... is this her slip? Are we already in her bedroom? Her voice is seductive and a couple of songs really stood beyond that general sultry (Son of a Preacher Man) nature. But that energy is stuck in the transition from the 60's to the 70's--leaving a modern listener feeling that it is Mrs. Robinson's mother pulling you into the bedroom and no longer the free love of the youth.

I really enjoyed "The Windmills of Your Mind" and nothing else ever came close. Great singer/voice, just didn't care for most of the songs.

1001 songs you have to hear before you die, sure, I'll give you that for "Son Of A Preacher Man". If the albums was "Dusty Springfield and a ton of songwriters and a bunch of studio musicians In Memphis", then I might be more inclined to appreciate the album on the whole. But the album is "Dusty In Memphis", and if all we're talking about is what Dusty brings to these tracks, I don't see it as something that merits being in this top 1001.

I think of Dusty as a "one hit wonder". Before listening to the album, my view was that Son of a Preacher Man was good enough to get a 3 no matter what the rest of the album was like. I changed my mind after listening. The soulful songs So Much Love and Don't Forget About Me are good tunes but I found the rest of them painful. Breakfast in Bed is also OK but only if you hear the voice but don't listen to the words. When you pay attention to the words, you realize how lame these songs are. There is no doubt that her voice is superb but I really can't get into her using her lovely gift to sing soap opera lyrics over insipid orchestration It's just a little too white for this white guy.

It's ok if you really like the 60s ballads

Pretty straightforward "blue-eyed soul". Hard to tell if I liked Son of a Preacher Man because it's especially good, or if it's just familiar.

ive no idea what to expect. OH nice start. second song meh. third song is/was popular apparently, lyrics are fun lol. 'i dont want to hear it anymore' im here for this sad song tbh. most songs end pretty abruptly. okay im done after the mess of different versions at the end anddd theres some okay tracks, ive saved two, i dont think im coming back to this even though it wasnt unpleasnt or anything.

Not a unique enough voice for me to class this album as a standout. The tracks are equally as mundane. 2 Stars!

If nothing else, this is a very good SOUNDING album, well produced. The music sounds good, but is a bit one note. For someone who thought Dusty Springfield was a one hit wonder this is a pleasant surprise. Sounds almost like a female Isaac Hayes (or he like her) the orchestration, the back up singers and horns. The hook on Son of a Preacher man is undeniable. Awesome drum sound throughout, especially the first few songs. Love the guitar noodling on track 5. Track 7 has a great crescendo. I like it when the end of the album goes a bit more boho and experimental, sitars, Spanish guitar, chimes, interesting word play—I kind of like the Jefferson starship leanings here better than the R&B sex ballads. Track 8 almost gets to a 007 intro, epic vibe. Overall, fun to explore the album, sounded nice, but ultimate background more music.

It's not bad, but it's not my kind of music, so i kind of have to give a lower rating to distinguish from the other albums so far.

9th album with group. This is a repeat album, and I’ve decided this just isn’t as good on a second listen. It’s just too pop for me. Good Songs - Son of a Preacher Man, Breakfast in Bed, and In the Land of Make Believe. Bad Songs - Just a Little Lovin’, So Much Love, I Don’t Want to Hear It Anymore, Don’t Forget About Me, Just One Smile, The Windmills of Your Mind, No Easy Way Down, and I Can’t Make It Alone.

Not my favorite album, especially since at least in the recordings I listen to there was high pitched ringing in the background. Certainly an album, but compared to some of the other albums I've heard on this list, not an incredible cut. My favorite track was No Easy Way Down.

I can’t believe there are at least two Dusty Springfield albums on this list. This one does have a lot of good song writers, just no good music.

The great vocals can’t make up for how incredibly boring this album is.

It's wild that this type of music was still being made the same year that Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin, Tommy and The Stooges were released. This album is so whitebread and lame.

Insipid blue-eyed soul from a singer performing songs written by other people and performed better by other artists. The silver lining was that a little research saved me from listening to the entire offering on Spotify, as the original album was only a shade over 30 minutes long, not the closer to an hour endurance test that Spotify offered up to me. There's a peculiar mix, from southern soul to straight up pop music, all of it bland and the musical equivalent of cold and well-used dirty dishwater. Dusty does this thing where she goes all breathy, which I assume is to cover up for the fact that she doesn't have a very powerful voice. The backing singers are more interesting vocally than she is herself. The epitome of a one star album.

I love her debut "A Girl Called Dusty , had it pop up on this list a few days ago, but this album is boring in comparison.

Ohhh okay Son Of A Preacher Man? I know this chorus. Instrumentation is really nice, and the mix is interesting too. Drums hard right, strings, guitars and bass in the left. One ear listening allows for completely different experiences. The pickup in Windmills was the first thing that perked my ears up a bit. Oh, Randy Newman and Burt Bacharach are credited writers on this album. Burt died like two days ago. This album nearly put me to sleep, honestly. She's got a good voice, the instrumentation and orchestration were nice but man was it slow and tiresome. The whole album is the same song. Notable Songs - The Windmills Of Your Mind 2/10
