Fabulous. If you don’t like this, you don’t like music
It’s a wonderful album. She has a great unique voice and style. I like the more upbeat songs on here the most
Good soul/R&B, great voice and instrumentation. Som of a Preacher Man
Surprisingly good soul album from this white lady in Memphis...I actually don't know if she's from Memphis. "Son Of A Preacher Man" feels like one of those songs you'd know if you weren't trying to - but the rest of this album is actually great too. Sexy, soulful, and lovely.
Feels like pre-Adele, strong Bond song vibes.
Yeah! I like it well enought. Not enough to want it in my collection, but there's no denying the artist's talent for vocal excellence.
"Son of A Preacher Man" was the only great song on here but I really enjoyed everything else. I think she would have benefited from more upbeat stuff like that but her voice is insane and it was a fun listen anyway.
Just what I needed today.
Buttery smooth. That classic soul/blues sound. A fun album.
White woman does soul music, and to be fair, she does it well. My problem is I can’t stop thinking about so many Black artists that do it even better. I was reading how this is considered one of the greatest albums of all time, but would she get that acclaim if not for being a white English woman able to sing the style? Again the album is really good and Dusty deserves flowers, but I think it is a bit overhyped because of what she looks like and not because of her talent.
Much more dynamic than I expected
Liked this a lot. Great film found track 8/10
I've heard a few of these songs covered before but have never heard of Dusty Springfield until now. I was very pleasantly surprised with this album, I really didn't think I would like it at first, but I was vibing hard from the second listen onward. Also, this is just making me want to watch Severance again, as "The Windmills of Your Mind" is prominently featured, even if it isn't the Dusty Springfield version. Overall, this isn't something I would always want to listen to, but god damn is it good when I just want some chill tunes. I will for sure be returning to more Dusty Springfield in the future. My favorite songs on this album are the previously aforementioned "The Windmills of Your Mind", as well as "Son of a Preacher Man".
Quite lovely
Though songs have similar sounds, they’re like different genres. Country, gospel, soul, etc.
I was actually pleasantly surprised by this album, I think I've heard one or two of the songs before but on the whole it was really easy listening and quite nice to listen to. No complaints about it really, probably not in a rush to go back and listen to the whole thing again but would take one or two songs and put them into my rotation of music.
Just love the sound of this record. Has that warm, yet melancholic production that feels so tied to the 60s and towering above it is a wonderful vocal performance.
I need to listen to this on vinyl. I love this. Holy crap. Solid. Adore I can’t make it alone.

No bad tracks but no standouts either, other than of course Son of a Preacher Man which was fantastic. Easy listening but didn't grip me.
Starting out strong with a song about fucking to get your day started. I enjoy her smoky deeper voice. The tone reminds me of Carole King. Surprised to learn she's English but the timing makes sense for blue eyed soul to break in the UK. The song structure reminds me of the temptations which again makes sense.
Nice love dusty
no easy way down is a banger
One of the greatest blue eyed soul voices around. A simply wonderful, sensual voice.
Classic and beautiful. Dusty's voice is the main draw here and remarkably still holds up today in my opinion.
A nice voice and more of the same as son of a preacher man. The songs are neatly composed and have a good vibe to them. What keeps it from 5 is a little extra oompf.
I'm groovin.
I enjoyed the album and Dusty Springfield's voice very much but I feel like the songs dragged on for a little bit.

Can white people make soul? No. But there is whatever this is and it's very good. 7/10 Pleasant
Liked the soul music, nice dive into the 60's
excellent album - love her voice - good to listen to #albumsky #musicsky 3.7/5 stars
If I did drag I’d sing Son of a Preacherman.
Album gets 4 just on the strength of Son of a Preacher Man, and not blowing it with the rest of the album. But I also didn’t hear anything that would elevate it to a 5 star
Happy St Patrick’s Day to the most surprisingly Irish artist in the book!!
I love Dusty Springfield, and her soulful voice is made for this Memphis sound.
What a great voice Dusty.had. This album is really cool. I like the string arrangements. Solid musicianship all around. Now go and check out Dusty singing with the Pet Shop Boys on What Have I Done to Deserve This.
Dang this white lady can sing!
Blue eyed soul. Songs don't have the typical verse and chorus structure. More of a lyrical journey. She's got a breathy, sensual voice. Favorite songs were Son of a Preacher Man, Just One Smile, and Windmills of your Mind. 4⭐️
its ok
Dusty's voice was wonderful as she sang through these classic blue-eyed soulful numbers. I listened to many of the bonus tracks for this album and I like many of the more blues-influenced numbers that I found there. She has certainly had a major influence on many of the female British artists that have followed.
Beautiful
Enjoyable album. Great songs and overall great vibe.
Not my typical stuff but it was great!
Loved it!
So nostalgic 8.5/10 not 100% my style of music but so good when I’m in the right mood best song windmills of your mind.
A very good album. Nice vocal performance. Smoothing and beautiful arrangement. The recording is a bit off, and doesn’t really make her voice shine. But it is still a very nice piece of work, considering it was released in 1969.
Pleasing to listen to. “Son of a Preacher Man” is obviously a banger. I originally thought the rest was a bit boring, but started really liking the album by the end, and ended up listening twice.
Added. Sultry voice. Fireside.
Dusty, I think I thought you were Buffalo Springfield. I was way off base. I loved this album. When Amy Winehouse released Back to Black it reminded me I needed to checkout the Jazz and Soul singers that were important to music before I was born. This album’s recording quality surprised me. But it does a great job capturing a mood that apparently is referred to as Memphis style. I will certainly be revisiting this album. Kinda wish I could even find the vinyl. You could be a 5, with time and repeated listens, but right now it’s a solid 4. Plus, I feel I need to explore other soul and jazz singers to fully know what I think is great.
Guess it only took 4 days to get something completely new for me. Or so I thought until I heard Son of a Preacher Man - thanks Tarantino. That is definitely not to say that the rest was any slouch. Springfield’s voice is incredible. It’s so good that the incredible, lush strings/horns and dusty (ha) drum breaks were constantly took an undeserved a backseat as I listened. I found the ease with which she could slide between jazz vocals, traditional soul vocals and even a country twang, while still delivering a sonically cohesive experience to be fascinating. On paper I wouldn’t have thought it’d work, but it definitely does. Another thing that this album has really made me consider is how much I appreciate the limitations of the single LP format. I didn’t find a dull moment on this 40 minute album and I wish artists these days had some physical limitations to really only include the best of the best from their recording sessions. It is much more conducive to creating an album you can’t help but finish, despite its biggest hit coming in the first third of the track listing.
Good singing andnmusic
Nice voice, soulful. Didn't realize she was British! Likes: Son of a Preacher Man, I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore, The Windmills of Your Mind
Cool album and a new artist in my playlist
This is a Mags album right here, pretty high chance that Son of a Preacher Man is her favourite song - and who can blame her? That riff is an all timer. Even Cypress hill sampled it! Just a nice warm connection to home here, a lovely listen on the bus out to visit friends from home.
Fab
It was good, not as good as I was hoping, but still pretty good. I'd never heard the whole album before, which is a bit surprising as I have a lot of southern soul music in my collection.
Never heard this before but as good as I would expect. Son of a Preacher Man is the obvious highlight but the whole thing's great start to finish
Beautiful!
Another album I had never heard form an artist I never have any thought to except for her hit. I was pleasantly surprised but his. Isaac Hayesish arrangements and really liked where the bass was in the mix. It’s a 3.5 for me but here’s a 4 for you Dusty.
Lush and mysterious, Dusty Springfield's opus has aged like wine. The orchestration is excellent too. This is solid A-tier vocal reading, though it doesn't quite reach the legendary S-tier status of a Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, or Aretha Franklin. Four enthusiastic stars.
Actually enjoyed it a lot. She has a really nice voice and I enjoy R&B.
Marry me, Dusty
Bit timeless our dusty
She had such a magnificent voice. A suave, soulful album. There’s a whole lot of musicianship in this record. Enjoyable and relaxing. Incredible.
Peaceful, with different influence like Bossa Nova or middle- eastern. Always pleasant to hear her voice and other material than Son of a Preacher Man
Really easy listening, enjoyed
another classical
This album was pretty good. Soulful
Tasty Bowl of Soul
Hyvää menneen maailman RnB:tä. 3.5/5
Awesome classic album!
Such a smooth, sultry voice - a pleasure to listen to.
Quite good!
хорошенький альбом, приятаня женщина, один трек улетел в лайки. поставлю четверку
18/1089 - I wish there weren't any strings. The parts would sound much better on electric guitar or piano (maybe electric piano too.) Once there are too many classical musicians in the room, it gets hard to do "feel" based music like soul or rock and the rhythm of the song suffers. Other than that, the harmonies are really cool combined with Springfield's smooth voice.
88/100.
Okay yeah that was really good. Really didn’t expect it to be this good, but every song is sung incredibly and is accompanied by a put-together, pleasant melody. 8/10.
Dusty's greatest album. Warm, rich and delicious, like honey spread on bread.
This is a good album. Her voice is so iconic and she sings so well. It might not be my go to kind of music, but I can recognise good music when I hear it.
Favorite Track: Son of a Preacher Man
Seducing vocals, simple lyrics and excellent arrangements. All about love.
Yep, very nice one :) actually would go and listen to this in my own time. Son of a preacher man is of course an absolute banger, thanks dusty.
no denying she has the voice of an angel, the lyrics aswell have a soulful feel calming you into a joyful and mellow state.
Didn’t realize that song was her
Good, classic sound. She reminds me of Bobbie Gentry.
Very nice blend of jazz, country, and folk music. Makes me think of a white Ella Fitzgerald. It is very much of its time, but a great listen.
Such a beautiful voice.
A timeless classic.
Windmills of Your Mind is goated
I like the vibes of the album. Her voice is very good. The songs are nice. All in all a very good album.
82% Best: Son of a Preacher Man; Don’t Forget About Me; The Windmills of Your Mind; In the Land of Make Believe Must-Hear? Sure
Very good, and Dusty is classic!
Some good ol' Dusty blue eyed soul with a pop twist. I urge everyone to take a look at the writers and personnel involved with this album. Plenty of music industry royalty there. It all shows too, with wonderfully arranged orchestrations that pair nicely with Dusty's lusciously sweet voice. It's all pleasant and a little intimate too. Favorite tracks: Son of a Preacher Man, I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore, Breakfast in Bed
Really wonderful sounding album I like the slight bit of roughness in her voice.
I'm a sucker for this 1960s production. Nothing is over compressed and the panning choices are always fun. Noone puts the drum in one ear anymore! Dusty strikes me a bit as an older Taylor Swift. Awful lot of song about boys behaving poorly. It's great though. Breakfast in Bed is a favorite. where shes nailing a guy with a troublesome girl he wants to return to. Tragic but makes for a great song. The whole album is like that. Great arrangements and I love the purposeful bass playing. Just right.

A really beautiful record
This was a surprise. Way better than I expected. My initial reaction is a 3/5 but I could very easily be prepared to give this 4/5 after a few listens.
4-
Pretty nice and vibey
I enjoyed this album,
son of a preacher man - stays goated
If you asked me who Dusty Springfield was before this album came up on my list I would have said " I dunno, who is he?" Not sure how I've never heard of them. "Son of a Preacher Man" is a song I've heard before and feel it's pretty popular as well, but the name Dusty just doesn't ring a bell. Also surprised to hear she is from London when the album is called Dusty in Memphis. Fully expected a country album alongside Dolly and Reba, but this was a nice surprise all around. It makes sense that the Preacher Man song was originally planned for Aretha, as it just stands out amongst the other tracks. Apparently this album and the connection to Atlantic Records lead to Led Zeppelin getting signed. Such an interesting story hidden in this album and learning this tidbits is such a neat bonus on top of hearing great music id never hear otherwise. Favorite track "Son of a Preacher Man" 4/5
4*
Sultry and beautiful. A perfect blend of pop, rock, and soul.
Silky smooooth
Dusty has a very beautiful voice and I love the backing orchestra. This album sounds so warm and inviting and kind of nostalgic. The Windmills of Your Mind was excellent and bonus points for the sitar sounding instrument on In The Land Of Make Believe.
Frábær söngkona. Góður stemmari og falleg lög.
Frábær söngkona en líka með meistaradeildarlið með sér í lagasmíð. Mjög góð plata.
Even if some of the songs are a bit thin, Dusty’s voice carries them. She can give anything such warmth and soul.
Bangers on bangers. Great for certain moods.
Love her voice and groove.
A singular voice of her generation singing a fine selection of great songs from the 1960s. "Son of a Preacher Man" still bangs almost six decades later.
Love 'Don't Forget About Me'
So glad we got to do this album! Looking back, I actually listened to this immediately after we finished the last Dusty album. Most of the album is “good”, but there are 2/3 HITS. Son Of A Preacher Man is Dustys most popular, In The Land Of Make Believe shows off her vocals and sounds like a Brazilian song and I also loved Breakfast In Bed. Probably a 4.25 for me. Maybe on my third time through, ill bump this up, but 4 for now
Beautiful voice. I don’t love the tempo of Dusty In Memphis but her vocals are dreamy and otherworldly.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. 4
Smooth, sultry, sexy
Classy performer
Not all to my taste, but some great stuff, and a couple all-timers.
son of a preacher man 5/5 rest of the album 3/5
Beautiful
It’s soulful without trying too hard. The sound is full but not overdone, leaving space to take it all in. It’s soft but has weight in the right places. Includes an absolute banger and a few great songs I've never heard.
Yebba coded. Especially liked So Much Love and Just a Little Lovin.
Man oh man, Dusty is just beautiful! She’s defo been one of the finds of this experience for me. Whole album is beautiful. Her voice is just *chefs kiss* exquisite!
I dig this. A lot.
Lovely
Solo work by members of the Pet Shop Boys is under appreciated.
I thought this was terrific -- awesome combination of her voice with the strings.
Very smooth
Favorite track: son of a preacher man other picks: just a little loving, don't forget about me, the windmills of your mind.
Just a lovely, lovely record from top to bottom. Sometimes auteurship is not all it's cracked up to be.
An unfortunate truth is that Dusty Springfield debut, which I heard a little over a month ago, wasn’t the least bit impressive to me. It being composed entirely of covers really didn’t do much for her. But thankfully, the aspect of that debut which stood out best was Dusty herself. As far as I was concerned, what she had going on there needed no real improvement. Her voice was beautiful, and it gave me hope that I’d hear an improvement on her sound in the future. I couldn’t have imagined how much of an improvement it would be. This takes every issue I had with the actual music backing Dusty and throws it out of the window. She not only sounds just as amazing as she did before, but somehow improves in many ways. And the instrumentals and orchestral arrangements are so good. Like I can’t stress enough how much depth they add. They are this nice blend of soul and jazz. I think the best example I can give is towards the end, with The Windmills of Your Mind. It starts out as this really serene, almost Bossa-nova like, introduction. But within the last minute, the tempo changes, everything ramps up, and it gets super dramatic. Dusty also just has an incredibly powerful and earnest way of describing love, longing, sadness, and desire with her voice. Of course most people have heard Son of a Preacher Man before. And I think it’s an absolute classic. This quickly worked its way to the top of my list for soul albums, and I think it is a considerably more worthwhile listen than anything else I’ve heard from her. Rating: 8/10
Solid record. She has a beautiful voice.
Very solid album with some great tunes. "Son Of A Preacher Man" is an American classic that is so memorable that I can't say the title without singing it in it's great melody. She's got a wonderful voice and each time she's appeared on this list I've been excited to get to listen. The only downside is that it felt short at a little over 30 minutes. Impressive 4/5.
I used to put Dusty Springfield in a wrong corner, namely that of the stupid American pop song. I'm glad to have been proven wrong here. I've liked the song Son Of a Pracher Man at least since Pulp Fiction. And here, too, I realized while listening that I already knew and liked other songs by Dusty Springfield. The music is soft and the voice is great. 4/5
About half these songs were amazing, and the other half were just good. That's not quite enough to get a 5 from me, but it was close. Great album!
some of the material is kind of boring but her voice & the production is just exquisite, what a vibe
It turns out Dusty is a woman.
I had forgotten which songs Dusty Springfield sang and was very pleasantly surprised by the album.

Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis This is a very good album that has it's themes of heartbreak and love-pursuing. Even does there's the popular song "Son of a Preacher Man" on there, there are better songs than even that one itself, specially "The Windmills of Your Mind". Almost every song here has some of the best song-writing to offer in that decade, it sounds orchestral in a way. Very organized, nice and gentle, with a punch of harmonies going on every song. You can tell this album was made with huge respect towards music. 1.- Just A Little Lovin' = 8/10 2.- So Much Love = 8/10 3.- Son of a Preacher Man = 7/10 4.- I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore = 8/10 5.- Don't Forget About Me = 7/10 6.- Breakfast in Bed = 8/10 7.- Just One Smile = 8/10 8.- The Windmills of Your Mind = 9/10 9.- In the Land of Make Believe = 7/10 10.- No Easy Way Down = 8/10 11.- I Can't Make It Alone = 8/10 FINAL SCORE = 7.8/10
This album is very polished and well produced. Her vocals are soulful and sexy. She has such a lovely voice. It is a very easy listen.
Enjoyed this album. Just short of 5* because it's slightly boring at times
I really enjoyed this; it will go in the rotation. Favourites: Son of a Preacher Man (by far), Just a Little Lovin', Windmills of Your Mind.
Great voice, great songs, great album.
还行,一边听美女唱歌一边学()
Really nice. There's a nice blend of country and soul here that is fun to listen to and sweet to the ears. I had "So much love" and "son of a preacher man" in my head all weekend. Taylor and I went on a walking ghost tour downtown and we listened to this and she fell asleep on the ride home.
Knew the singles, but didn't realize she was white + English until this. Some of these lyrics are hilarious with that context. A blue eyed soul trailblazer for fellow lasses Amy Winehouse and Adele.
Hard to believe this flopped when originally released.
I enjoyed this one. Her voice is divineeeee. And her style reminds me of maybe a blend of Amy Winehouse (especially in "The Windmills of Your Mind") and Carole King.
Actually, quite good!
Close your eyes. You're on a riverboat, gently drifting down a crystal still river, a mottled amber in the deepening sunset. In The Land of Make Believe is drifting upon the air. Upon the shore are quixotic monoliths, and that's when you realise you're navigating the Windmills of Your Mind. Honourable Mentions - The Windmills of Your Mind, Son of a Preacher Man.
It was good and pleasant. Some good songs
- Made me nostalgic - Liked Just One Smile - Very nice album
A beautiful “airy” album. I really like the musical palate. Best song: The Windmills of Your Mind Worst song: Just One Smile
Yeah this was good. I only knew Dusty Springfield from "Son of a Preacher" and "Spooky" so I wasn't sure what to expect. I don't think it was anything earth-shattering but there wasn't a song I didn't like, and I definitely enjoyed her unique voice. Even though this wouldn't be a go-to genre of music for me, I can see myself returning to this at some point.
A beautiful album throughout. Some standout tracks for me, but the rest did not disappoint.
(October 31st, 2024) Not sp00ky enough, unless one is afraid of British women. See you in November, Dusty Sunday, November 3, 2024 Groovy HL: "Son of a Preacher Man", "Just One Smile", "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore", "Breakfast in Bed",
Good
мило, традиционно, качественно, успокаивающе. подойдет на ост для евангелиона
Lives up to the hype
Big n nice sound. Elegant, like bond tunes
I actually really like the soundscape of this album, it's very sprawling and conjures, for me, images of mountains and nature. Has a lot of depth to it, I dug it overall!
Now this is easy to listen to! Loved it
A name i had always heard but not someone who's music i had ever listened to! really beautiful stuff - I love covers!! the two randy newman covers kicked ass imo... really gorgeous and uplifting album
Not entirely my tea but quite open to it :) enjoyed!
Nice vibe, chill and fun, I like it
I heard of Dusty Springfield as a blue-eyed soul singer with her distinct mezzo-soprano singing voice. Earlier this year, I listened to her cover of Classics IV's "Spooky" which was pretty well done. This album of hers Dusty in Memphis was about as good as that cover was. Her voice carries throughout this album, elevating the songs with the lustrous instrumentation from the session musicians while Jerry Wexler cleaned up the sound nicely. Some of my favorite tracks were the ones that took more style deviations, particularly the anthemic Southern country tune "Son of a Preacher Man", and her cover of Michel Legrand's "The Windmills of Your Mind" which kicks up the tempo towards the end, and the sitar cadence of "In the Land of Make Believe". I understand that not everyone is into this style of music, with the performance relying solely on the singer with the instruments serving as a backdrop for her not helped by the number of covers present on this album. But Dusty in Memphis was a good outing, and in some respects, I can see how this album and by extension, Dusty herself inspired later female singers such as Adele and Amy Winehouse. Give it a spin.
Great album. Feels like you could listen to it in front of your fireplace on a rainy day.
I surprisingly enjoyed this one, Springfield has a lovely voice and the instrumentation is good. Definitely an album I will revisit in the future. Favorite tracks: "Son of a Preacher Man" and "The Windmills of Your Mind."
Some great songs.
“Dusty in Memphis” showcases Dusty Springfield’s sultry vocals against lush, soulful production. Her emotional depth shines on tracks like “Son of a Preacher Man,” and “Windmills..” blending pop and Southern soul with timeless finesse. Though not every song hits the same peak, it’s a classic, essential listen for any fan of 60s soul.
Dusty, hazy, summer of love. Sultry and confident.
dusty springfield has one of my favorite voices of all time. and here, it is employed at its best. gone are her days of banal pop music and given a more sophisticated avenue. this album is soulful, jazzy, catchy. of course, 'son of a preacher man' is the big tune off of this one, but to me there are several other highlights, including 'just a little lovin,' and her version of the french song 'the windmills of your mind.' just a really great album with a classic sound that i really enjoy.
Too slow for my taste but she had an awesome voice!
Really liked this. She has a beautiful voice and the album is just really pretty. 8 / 10
Very enjoyable album. With genuine variety between songs and a form of music that holds up in the 21st century this deserves an easy 4/5.
first listen just freakin timeless
Beautifully sung, well-produced, and surprisingly sexy. Highlights: Son of a Preacher Man, I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore, Breakfast in Bed
Dusty's voice is great. The songs were okay. Not bad
Son of a preacher man is a banger, the rest is pretty good 3.8
This album is amazing! She has some smooth grooves. Is it country? RnB? She also displays some mystical lyricism with “The Windmills of your mind”, which I love. Unfortunately there are some mundane tracks sprinkled in which stop me from giving it a 5.
Verrassend lekker
Spoko
Mega fajne. Son of a preacher man wiadomo, że najlepsze, ale znalazło się też kilka sampli do innych piosenek.4/5
There's so many musical references I get now. And did Annie Lennox just straight up steal her voice for much of the 90's? This needs to be on the list, I just personally like the people referencing her better.
Such a fabulous voice, like raw honey. A beautiful album from a fabulous singer.
Love the voice, overall solid album. Favorite songs were: 1. Just A Little Lovin' 8. The Windmills Of Your Mind 7/10
Muy delicioso
Cool individual tracks but listening to them one after another makes the ones in the second part feel samey, pretty sure that once they come on shuffle in my playlist they will bang
Beautiful record and a soulful sound!
Nice background music but not my usual taste
I’ve never really got this one. It’s fine with a terrific band. But Aretha did son of a preacher man better. Being honest, I like the other divas better. Give me Linda ronstadt, sick of your male shit. Give me Cher, recounting the hypocritical racism she faces in Gypsies tramps and thieves. Give me Aretha, Mavis Staples, Whitney, Etc. People love this album. And that’s perfectly fine. I don’t. I do like windmills of your mind and land of make believe. I like the album but don’t love it. It is very popular so I’m averaging my three and everyone’s else’s 5 to a 4. And I feel that’s a little high.
Music to get Soulful in Sorrento? Bouncy in Bombay? or Caliente in Cadiz? (Its so playful and evocative, and it probably didnt sound a bit cheesy at the time) Or just plain lugubrious, pleading, sensual and enthralling tones of the ever soulful Dusty in Springfield. I'm a fan. definitely a voice people should know. Will delve (not an AI) into this album again maybe (but her hits for sure). She was very popular, but so was Petula Clarke. One things this list could make for room for is all the amazing female post war vocalists (and remove some rappers or experimental proto punk perhaps).
very moody and jazzy..I like it even if I slower songs are not my usual type
8/10 perfect for Sunday in autumn cleaning the kitchen
Very nice
I really enjoyed this - I don't have much to say other than I could listen again and probably will. Reviewed 06/09/2024

I liked it. That white girl got soul
Blue-eyed soul at one of its peaks. Both Dusty's vocal and the backing accompaniment are really really good. Gained a new appreciation for her for sure.
Immortal songs of a time I'll never forget, etched into my memories, how could a strange woman with a mysterious voice impact a 10 year old boy so strongly. 4 stars
Smooth voice and lovely songs
I can imagine me as a little girl, wearing my prettiest dress, playing this on my mom’s huge stereo console with the attached tv and 8-track player, singing along to Son of a Preacher Man. Very evocative of that time.
Soulful, amazing, and right where it needs to be.
son of a preacher man is wonderful and that song is 5 stars. it's one of my wife's favorite songs of all time. song's I really enjoyed: "don't forget about me" "so much love" "I don't want to hear it anymore" I love her voice and the motown sound of this album and it's a strong 4 for this overall I'd say.
Beautiful voice paired with The Memphis Boys in the rhythm section. What's not to love? Even when the string arrangements get a bit drippy and syrupy, The Memphis Boys keep it grounded.
Sehr schöne Stimme - irgendwie fehlt mir da aber was zum 5er ... Son of a Preacherman höre ich mittlerweile lieber von Joss Stone. The Windmills Of Your Mind ist für mich ein uralter Ohrwurm
they just dont make em like they used to……. highlights: just a little lovin’, the windmills of your mind, in the land of make believe (aug 28 2024)
lovely, chill album
I was on the fence about the first Dusty Springfield album I listened to during this project, but this record was a major improvement in my eyes. This album was an excellent display of folk-pop prowess with some terrific other elements thrown in like some country and even big band sounds. Springfield especially stayed true to the themes of the time - this album was mostly about fuckin'! Even so, this was a very pleasant listen and I would gladly run it back with this record any time. Notable Tracks: - Just a Little Lovin' - So Much Love - Son of a Preacher Man - her most popular hit for good reason - it's catchy as hell - Don't Forget About Me - Breakfast in Bed - cool horn parts - I Can't Make It Alone 8/10
I liked it.
Dusty!
Liked this a lot. I've always loved Dusty's voice, and the production on her big hits is very cool, but I'd never heard a whole album of her stuff and this was great.
Fun album, Son of a Preacher Man is a classic of course.
Classic and comfortable. I like the singer's voice a lot.
It’s so pretty, I love the sound. Soft and gentle.
It's a lovely album, an all time classic.
Some songs are almost perfect, some are just good. Favorite song: the windmills of your mind
This was quality. Even though these kinds of lovey-dovey songs are really not my style, she does it too well to criticize and I still enjoyed listening to this album. Fave Track: Son Of A Preacher Man Rating: 4
Good. White Aretha Franklin
Timeless classics, sultry lyrics, absolutely effortless.
Classic
Lovely stuff. Windmills Of Your Mind is one of the most impressive songs ever written I think. A well deserved 4 stars.
I was blown away at how timeless this album felt. Dusty is who Taylor Swift aspires to be.
When the USA wasn't bombing other countries or orchestrating fascist military coups in the Americas, it produced pretty good music...
A nice change. Lovely voice and catchy provocative songs
A classic. Glad I was able to listen to it even if it’s not quite my cup of tea.
Loving windmills of your mind, such a fantastic song with great lyrics
This is a beautiful album. A real delight to be served up this week. Listening in bed with a book on a grey Sunday afternoon and it is lifting me
4.5 or maybe a 4.75
Great album. Best tracks are The Windmills Of Your Mind and Son Of A Preacher Man, but the rest of the album is great too 4/5
Dusty Springfield has a wonderful voice and this album is the first I have heard from her. The songs are all very consistently good and i really enjoyed the album. If it was longer, i probably would have gotten a bit bored. I'd give it a solid 7/10, so rounded up to 4 stars.
I really enjoyed this album. Super diverse, great production, excellent stuff. Favourite tracks: Pony St., Kinder Murder, You Tripped at Every Step, 20% Amnesia, My Science Fiction Twin.
I really enjoyed this, suprisingly so. Wasn't that taken with her other album on this list, but the nuances of her vocals here are incredible. The topics of some of her music are not really nice, they seem to be related to gaslighting relationship abuse. When you read her bio, it kinda makes sense. A very 60's story. But her vocals, the mix of some of these songs. So impressed.
Underbar röst och extremt behagliga låtar. Om alla låtar var i son of a preacher -klass hade det varit en solklar femma. Men ändå en stabil fyra.
Gillade denna snäppet mer än A girl called Dusty. Börjar riktigt bra och Son of a preacher man är ju fantastisk. Lite svagare mot slutet men är ju svag för hennes sound så får bli en fyra.
Quite a fantastic showcase of our Dusty's talents. Happy 1001.
I loved this
9/10 Wonderful. Amazing voice, great songs, great tunes, great production It’s all so classy. She slides in, delivers the songs beautifully with a lot of feeling. Never needs to scream or over-emote to get across what she needs to Production too is restrained and holds off going too big, in favour of matching with her delivery But this restraint is what kept it off being a perfect 5 star for me, it somehow feels like everyone knows it is great but chose not to push the turbo button and take it up to perfect Best: Son of a Preacher Man
One of my all-time favorite songs is on this record and I had no idea!
I usually like more variety in the themes of the songs, but her voice is extremely soothing. Super great vocals and great instruments to back it. I’m surprised at how many songs I actually knew without knowing the singer herself.
Very enjoyable and a great voice. Glad I've finally heard it.
Gorgeous, silky voice. Not as country as expected. Would listen again and more.
Preacher Man!!! Time capsule and so much fun.
Great album
I enjoyed this slightly more than A Girl Named Dusty and could certainly see myself returning to this. The obvious favorite was “Son Of A Preacher Man”
I liked this a lot. This is better than the other Dusty album that is on this list. In fact I’m not sure we needed 2.
This is a bit better..... Engineered for Dusty's voice and boy what a voice! Well orchestrated and the songs again chosen to suit her.
It was really good
legal
Awesome sauce
One of my ex girlfriends loved this album and would play it all the damn time!!!! Dusty’s voice is incredible!
I really enjoy Dusty’s music. The only downside to this album is that is just a collection of songs. While that is not bad, concept albums really raised the bar. 4/5
This is very much comfort food for my ears. Like probably many, was surprised to find out she was a white English woman given her soulful voice. Son of a Preacher Man is still my favorite, but I Don't Want to Hear it Anymore is also a standout. And The Windmills of Your Mind was a nice kind of psychadelic tune.
This is a nice album. Loved the instrumentals so much!
Thought i wouldnt like it but did I. What a voice
The only song I recognized from this album was 'Son of a preacher man'. Great post-heartbreak album, no matter from which side you're experiencing it from. Those last couple of songs are great, while I likely won't listen to the whole piece again, 'No Easy Way Down' and 'I can't make it Alone' will stick with me.
Comfy
I love “Son of a preacher man”. I’m excited to hear this whole album. This is a great album. I don’t see what it was a double? “I’ll be faithful” starts with great gospel piano.
ngl i never heard of dusty springfield before this but i fw this stage name heavy. anyway this was a classic 60s soul album and what a lovely listen it was. i love dusty’s voice, she has a sultry and mature tone in her singing. it was honestly my favourite part of this album, i think she knows how to use her voice well. i also think her pen game was really good, my favourite writing was on “son of a preacher’s man”, very poetic in my opinion! great listen :)
Memphis shit. And NY shit I guess. Greasy ass drums show how funky one can make a soft slow beat. Restrained singing. More poppier than I would have expected. First few tracks go the hardest.
Dusty has a great voice and this is some good, classic R&B. So Much Love really shows her off. This album fearures good vibes, a soulful band, and a really clean sound.
Tolles Album mit viel Tiefe.
I own the 45 of this album and it is great. Not in my top albums of all time but very excellent.
I liked this. Classic album.
Hadn't given much thought (or listen) to Dusty Springfield before taking the album challenge and I've come to realize I have heard her plenty of times without connecting the dots it's been Dusty. Her outstanding voice and the material she sings, plays to her strong points and makes for a very solid listen. I've been to believe a lot of the late 60's orchestrated, female pop singers were kind of cheesy and throw-away, but I've become quite of fan of the era and appreciated their soulful and brilliantly produced styling.
Groovy, baby! Funny that during the 2nd song ("So Much Love") I was thinking this sounded like it could be a slightly earlier Carole King record - she wrote that song. Never knew any of this outside the classic "...Preacher Man" - good listen, excellent singer without overdoing anything, classic backing band. Maybe a little over-produced in some parts but overall a great late 60s keeper. 7/10 4 stars.
Some songs I didn’t even know were dusty!
I enjoy this type of soulful music, it just falls into the category of songs that sound a lot alike when you’re not really paying attention to the lyrics. But I actually enjoyed more songs on this album than I expected on first listen since I only knew a couple to start.
Smooth, love the chords in The Windmills Of Your Mind.
Several good songs, not necessarily hers.
Dusty has been on here twice! Does she need a biopic? Why don't we know more about Dusty Springfield?
Everything is better in Memphis it would appear. Great songs and classic sound, very hard to fault. I don't want to sound like an old man but all the current chipmunk sounding ladies nowadays should listen to this and be embarrassed. Close to a 5.
Think I may have heard some of these songs from past delves into 60s music, but certainly my first time through the album. Having “Elvis in Memphis” yesterday there are some comparables, but I have to say I enjoyed this more. Dusty’s voice is so warm and welcoming, and orchestration and songwriting is perfect for the easy listening this is. Works well when feeling up or down. ‘Son of a Preacher man’ certainly her most popular song here but there are plenty of other greats here. 4/5
I was surprised to see that this record is more highly regarded that A Girl Called Dusty, which had more instantly recognizable tracks. Happy to have heard Just A Little Lovin', So Much Love, and Don't Forget About Me.
Qué gusto de disco
I'm a fan
I can hear the influence of French cabaret singers here. Lovely voice, lovely instrumental bits
Echt lekker genre dit
What a lovely voice she has. As someone who only knew her from the Pet Shop Boys song she did, it was very interesting to hear her at this point of time.
It’s a 3.5 that I’m gonna pretty easily bump up to a 4. It’s all in her voice; it’s what carries this album through and through. Even though there’s some super good lyrics in here and some really catchy instrumentals, her voice just glides over everything and cuts through like butter. I think this album shines brightest when the instrumentation is either a bit more minimal, to let her voice stick out the most, or when the instrumentation builds into this bombastic piece to let her voice just glide up with it and still really stick out. Whenever it’s sort of in the middle, where the instrumentation is too much and too sudden, those songs just never fully kept me engaged for one reason or another. Either way, it’s a fabulous listen, and there are some real classics in here, I think. Pretty pleased with a 4. Shoutout to I Don’t Want to Hear It Anymore.
The songs that clicked were so perfect (obviously Son of a Preacher Man), but some of the songs gave away a disconnect between her vocals and the instrumentation (probably due to the dubbing). A mix of 5 and 3 star songs.
Good! Didn’t realize son of a preacher man was from this. Nothing bad on here
Enjoyed this a lot actually. i wanna come back to it
Solid album. Great vocals and instruments. Preacher Man is an ear worm. Not my regular listen, but very enjoyable.
Very solid record from a time when the execution of the craft mattered; not perfect but really close. 4.5
Son of a preacher man. One of the best songs
Qué buena voz tiene.
